ThE materials used in this investigation were furnished by the Aluminum Co. of America and consisted of high-purity alurhinum (99.995 pct) and two aluminum-magnesium alloys containing approximately 2 and 5 pct Mg. The compositions of these alloys are listed in Table I. The materials were received as hot rolled 3/8-in. diam rods and were made from the same heats as the materials which were previously used in this laboratory.'j3 The rods were cold swaged to 1/4-in. diam by 1 in. long, and then had two parallel flats machined over the gage length 0.085 in. apart. The test bars were annealed for 10 min at 700° F, and strained 1 pct in tension at room temperature. They were electropolished (80 pct acetic acid; 20 pct perchloric acid, 70 pct concentration) at a temperature of 60°F at approximately 20 v. A grid, transverse or square, spaced 0.2 mm apart, was impressed by rolling a fine threaded screw (128 threads per in.) across the flat surfaces. The depth of the grooves was less than 5 p. For final annealing and grain size control the specimens were enclosed in aluminum foil and sealed in Vycor tubes. Annealing conditions varied from 1 hr at 700° F to 5 days at 1050° F, depending on the alloy content, to give for most of the specimens a final grain size of about 1 mm. This treatment was followed by electropol-ishing as described above. For the test series presented in Figs. 4 and 5 round specimens were used instead of flat ones, and fine machining marks served as marker lines instead of the impressed grid lines. Electropolishing was omitted. The major advantage is that the spacing of the machining marks is only about 1 u as compared to the 200 u of the impressed grid lines, permitting higher precision in strain measurements. Unfortunately the strain annealing necessary for grain size control also resulted in some preferred orientation of the grains. The preferred orientation of three arbitrary specimens was measured by X-ray diffraction methods and the averaged results are shown in Fig. 1. The possible effects of the preferred orientation on the test results will be discussed later. The testing temperatures were 410°, 515", 725", and 940° F, with one exception in the case of the 5.1 pct Mg alloy. Since the solubility limit of this alloy is 520°F, a test temperature of 545°F was cho-se sen instead of 515°F. The selection of the test temperature was based on two considerations: 1) at 900°F and above, extensive grain boundary migration made it more difficult to measure grain boundary sliding; 2) at 400°F and below, there was so little grain boundary sliding that it was again difficult to make precise measurements. The stress was chosen to give a creep rate of approximately 2.7 pct per hr in connection with Figs. 2

The reported decreases in water mobility do not seem unusual in view of non-Newtonian fluid properties. Shear stress vs shear rate diagrams have been reported for other solutions of water-soluble polymers. Some of these polymers are similar to the type mentioned by the author. Generally, the shear stress-shear rate is a non-linear function for these solutions. Data for plotting apparent viscosity vs shear rate can be obtained from this function. Apparent viscosity is defined as the ratio of shear stress to shear rate at a given shear rate. When plotted, the apparent viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate. This behavior is typical of a pseudoplastic fluid. For some water-soluble polymer solutions, the apparent viscosity decreases more than 50 times while the shear rate increases 1,000 times. Thus, viscosity of a pseudoplastic fluid only has meaning at a specified shear rate. Results of Fig. 1 could be explained in these terms. Viscosities measured in the Ostwald viscometer represent values at a given shear rate. Some average shear rate is affecting the polymer solutions while flowing through the core. This average value fixes the apparent viscosity as long as the flow rate remains constant. Viscosities measured by the two methods will be equal if shear rates are the same. The results indicate that shear rate in the core is lower (higher apparent viscosity) than in the viscometer. In the paper by Johnson, Bossler and Naumann, the relative permeability is independent of viscosity ratio. Thus, the relative permeability with respect to water flow at residual oil should be independent of the flowing phase viscosity. Polymer solutions will appear as Newtonian fluids The discussion emphasizes the nature of the "resistance factor effect" as discussed in the paper. Repeated anomalies arising in hundreds of experiments led us to the conclusion that non-Newtonian flow is not the only factor. Several of the key anomalies are as follows: 1. Measured viscosities over a range of shear rates from <1 sec-&apos; to 1,000 sec-&apos; do not account for but a minor fraction of the R observed in cores when compared in similar shear-rate ranges. 2. The slope of R vs flow rates in cores is always different from that expected from viscometer shear-rate measurements as shown in Fig. 2. in a core, the level of viscosity being fixed at a given flow rate. With these conditions, the definition of resistance factor R by Eq. 2 is simplified to Since , is constant with rate, R becomes a measure of the apparent viscosity in a core at a given flow rate. Variation in flow rate could easily account for the changes of R shown in Fig. 5. Also, this points to the fallacy of assuming R to be a unique parameter. The constant resistance factors at different flooding velocities appear to be in disagreement with the above discussion. The author furnishes Fig. 2 to support his arguments. As shown, the resistance factors remained substantially constant in the two cores over a considerable range of flooding velocities. However, in the 73-md core, the factor increases at lower rates. This behavior agrees with known characteristics of some pseudoplastic material. These materials act both as Newtonian and as non-Newtonian fluids in different regions of shear rate. Some exhibit first Newtonian, then non-Newtonian, finally, Newtonian character. Others are first non-Newtonian and then Newtonian. This latter type would explain the results with the 73-md core. The Fann-instrument results are not significant since shear rates in the core may be much different than with the viscometer. The higher resistance factor at high rates in the 150-md core is more difficult to explain. The greater resistance at increased flow rates could be attributed to what might be termed temporary bridging. As envisioned, changes in polymer configuration occur at the higher energy associated with the increased flow rate. These changes could cause less effective passage of polymer through the core. Correspondingly, increases in pressure drop will occur. These will be interpreted as higher resistance factors. 3. Most polymer solutions are non-Newtonian and many are more shear-rate sensitive than the polymers in question, yet only a very few polymers demonstrate useful R values. Gogarty&apos;s assumption that viscosities in cores and vis-cometers will be the same if measured at the same shear rate is only valid if non-Newtonian rheology is the only parameter. The experimental evidence does not validate this assumption. The anomalies observed in the equilibrium displacement experiment shown in Fig. 5 are not explained on the basis of varying flow rates since the rates were held constant. M

A STRIKING testimonial to the value of safety was contained in an ad- dress given in May, 1936, by A. R. Young, vice-president of the United States Steel Corp.: In the period from 1906 to 1935 we have spent $24,860,540 on safety work. By comparing the cost of "prevented" accidents by the cost of settling similar accidents, we found that we had made a saving of $117,224,238. Even if those figures are 50 per cent wrong, at least we got back every dollar we paid for safety and another with it. I don&apos;t think anyone has to blush before his board of directors for an investment of that kind.

A method is presented for estimating the effective directional permeability ratio and the direction of maximum and minimum permeabilities in anisotropic oil reservoirs. The method is based on the principle that production from a well in an anisotropic reservoir results in elliptical isopo-tentials about the well, rather than circular. Bottom-hole pressure data from three observation wells surrounding a producing well are required to apply the method. The method involves fitting field pressure data to a set of general charts of isopotentials and making a few simple calculations until a solution is found. The method is based on a steady-state equation for homogeneorrs fluid pow. In addition to the method, a brief discussion of the theory underlying it is presented. INTRODUCTION The existence of a different permeability in one direction than another in oil reservoirs has been mentioned in several papers. Hutchinson&apos; reported laboratory tests on 10 limestone cores and pointed out that one-half of them showed significant, preferential, directional permeability ratios, the average being about 16:1. Johnson and Hughesz reported a permeability trend in the Bradford field in the northeast-southwest direction with flow being 25 to 30 per cent greater in that direction. Barfield, Jordan and Moore -eported an effective permeability ratio of 144:1 in the Spraberry. Crawford and Landrum4 showed that sweep efficiencies could often vary by a factor of two to four, and sometimes considerably more, due to variations in flooding direction and patterns in anisotropic media. These findings indicate that the poss&apos;bility of anisotropy may be worthy of consideration in the development of an oil field. In considering this, it should first be determined if anisotropy exists. If it does, the direction of the maximum and minimum permeabilities and the ratio of their magnitudes are quantities which can be of value in planning the most efficient well-spacing patterns. Past methods of determining these quantities have included analysis of oriented cores and analysis of flooding performance of pilot injection patterns. In recent work, Elkins and Skov5 resented an analysis of the pressure behavior in the Spraberry which accounted for anisotropic permeability. This work was based on the transient pres- sure distribution in a porous and permeable medium, with the solution expressed as an exponential integral function involving rock and fluid properties. The purpose of this study is to provide a method, based on steady-state equations, of estimating the direction and relative magnitude of permeabilities in an oil reservoir from field pressure data and well locations only. The method presented is based on work by Muskat6 which shows that Laplace&apos;s equation represents the steady-state pressure distribution for homogeneous fluid flow in homogeneous, anisotropic media if the co-ordinates of the system are shrunk or expanded by replacing x with it is desirable that data be obtained early in the history of a field because knowledge of an anisotropic condition would allow new wells to be spaced in such a manner that reservoir development and subsequent secondary recovery programs could be planned more efficiently. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS A brief discussion of the theoretical basis on which the graphical solution was developed is presented in this section. Muskat&apos;s two-dimensional6 olution for the pressure distribution in an homogeneous, anisotropic medium with an homogeneous fluid flowing can be algebraically manipulated to show that the isobaric lines are perfect ellipses. The ratio of the major axis to the minor axis, a/b, is related to the permeability ratio, k,/k,, as follows. alb = dk,/k,--...........(1) It can also be shown that the pressure varies linearly with the logarithm of the radial distance from the producing well. However, the gradient along any ray is a function of the orientation of that ray, and a ..xiable is present when anisotropy exists which cancels out for a radial (isotropic) system. For a system such as that described, a dimensionless pressure-drop ratio was developed which is completely independent of the actual magnitude of the pressures. This was done by arranging Muskat&apos;s solution in such a way that aIl variables cancelled out except k,/k, and well positions. However, this solution depends on having a co-ordinate system with axes coinciding with the major and minor axes of the elliptical isobars. Thus, it was necessary to introduce a co-ordinate system rotation factor. The two unknown variables are then k,/k. and 0, and the two measured dimensionless pressure-drop ratios are related to the unknown variables as follows.

INTRODUCTION Shafts have been sunk in a number of ways. By and large, however, most have been sunk by drill, blast, muck, and slip form methods. Most methods have provided satisfactory means of completion. The major drawbacks to the conventional methods have been: (1) un- reliable cost estimates for completion; (2) unreliable rates of progress; and (3) unreliable integrity of the shaft lining. Recently , engineering design studies have been done that strongly indicate, that, by the use of existing proven technology, shafts can be completed faster, more cheaply, safer, and with a better lining that has been possible using conventional methods. THE METHOD The alternate method utilizes the techniques of big hole drilling, shield excavator tunnelling, and pre-cast concrete lining. Big Hole Drilling - Drilled shafts have been completed for several years and I don&apos;t intend to address the technology, only to point out the use of drilled shafts is an alternate method of shaft sinking. Ideally, in a multi-shaft mine, the first shaft would be blind bored and cased to a size, whereby it can handle the muck from the excavation of subsequent shafts. It should be an 8&apos; to 10&apos; completed diameter. The cost of such a shaft in sedimentary formations compares favorably with a conventional shaft. However, it is much faster. For additional shafts, the role of the drill is to complete small holes (3&apos; to 4&apos;) to the desired horizon. This is merely a hole to allow slashing to a larger size with easier muck removal from an underground drift connected to the previously drilled shaft. The smaller holes, just as the larger one, should be cased and grouted into place so as to assure a smooth open hole. SHIELD EXCAVATOR Theory and History - Tunnelling Shields have been in common use for several decades, and steam powered shields were used in England over 100 years ago. The purpose of the shield is to provide temporary ground support, protect personnel during operation, and to house the excavating equipment. The excavating equipment approach has varied from attempts at a continuous or semi-continuous boring machine, the tunnel mole, to a mechanical or hydraulic digging arm. The shield may or may not be an active digging element. If not active, the boring tool or cutter is advanced ahead of the shield to full diameter and then the shield is moved up to the cutter, or the shield advances along with the cutter. If active, the cutter opens a conical free face, and the shield is either jacked forward so that the leading edge spalls rock to the free face or poling plates are thrust forward to spall to the free face. In either approach, various methods of muck removal are incorporated into the shield. These may be gathering arms, conveyors, or with moles, hydraulic transport, where the cuttings are sufficiently fine. The efficiency of the muck removal system is critical as excavation is rapid and the system could easily become muck-bound. Application to Shaft Sinking- Technically, the use of a shield to sink vertical shafts is no different than a tunnelling operation. It is, in fact, less complex in most respects. Muck and water removal are difficult in a blind-driven shaft. However, where an underground opening is available for handling muck and water, rapid shield sinking is possible, using a pilot hole for muck and water to fall through and be removed from below. The Tabor Mining Shield is basically a caisson approach, whereby, the ground is only seen at the face or bottom. It does have hydraulic jacks to force it downward and has segmented cutting edges which allows forepoling ahead of the shield. The hydraulic excavator allows mining in the center of the face around the previously drilled hole with the forepoling segments slabbing to this free face. First, the drilled hole is cased and grouted. The machine is a tube with an excavator. The work cycle is as follows: (1) The casing and grout are cut at predetermined intervals by shaped charges. (2) The casing is crushed by the excavator, removed from the hole and hoisted to the surface. (3) The excavator then rips out a face around the hole by digging the formation in tension and breaking the pieces

FOR nearly a century, the Corocoro deposit has been renowned among geologists from the fact that it shares with the Lake Superior deposits of the United States the distinction of being the only important copper districts where native copper is worked commercially. The Corocoro district, named after the city of Corocoro, the capital of the Province of Pacajes (Department of La Paz, Bolivia) is situated towards the western edge of the Bolivian high plateau, at an altitude of a little over 13,000 ft. The most interesting part of the district is that immediately surrounding the city of Corocoro, at a distance, by railway, of 65 miles from La Paz and 210 miles to the Chilean port of Arica on the Pacific Coast. The climate of the region is that of the semi-desert, dry and relatively cold, with big differences of temperature between day and night. The rainy season begins in December and ends in March. The cupriferous lodes of Corocoro have not attracted as much interest as the silver mines of Potosi but they have been known for a long time. In the precolonial period the Indians were using the charquis, or natural native copper sheets, to make small brass objects, and the beautiful pale green brochantite of the outcrops as a source of green pigments. During the colonial period, the oxidized ores of the outcrops were worked for copper, which was used by the mint at Potosi for making currency. The native copper ores were neglected because the Spanish miners were at a loss how to concentrate and smelt them. About 1830, work by rudimentary processes, which were improved little by little, was begun on the native copper ores. The total production of native copper in the following hundred years amounted to 100,000 tons. This native copper, which was remarkably pure, was much appreciated on the European markets before the introduction of electrolytic copper. It was useful for making special ornamental brass or bronze and the granular concentrates of native copper, called barrilla, containing 80 to 85 per cent copper were suitable for making copper sulfate by direct oxidation and subsequent leaching with sulfuric acid.

A model of a porous body is presented in which the pore space consists of a system of voids and interconnecting tubes. Relationships between porosity and resistivity formation factor are determined partly by calculation, partly by experiment. Con triction effects characteristic of the model are shown to be sufficient to account for high formation factors. It is shown that constriction may be combined with moderate amounts of tortuosity to give model pore systems exhibiting to a first approximation porosity and resistivity properties similiar to those of natural porous bodies. INTRODUCTION The relationship between the electric resistivity of a fluid-filled porous body and the geometry of its pore space is so complex that the calculation of the resistivity of a natural porous rock is a practical impossibility. Both the resistivity of a body and its porosity are measurable quantities, however, and previous successes at relating them have been reached by an empirical approach. Efforts at obtaining theoretically derived formulae relating them have generally been unsatisfactory. One of the reasons for this may lie in the pore geometry that has been assumed. THE TORTUOSITY CONCEPT A Parameter called the formation factor is useful in dis-cussing the resistivity of a fluid-filled porous body. This parameter is the ratio of the resistivity of a fluid saturated porous body to the resistivity of the saturating fluid. Formation factors are often available from measurements on cores or from electric logs, and many attempts have been made to correlate formation factors and porosities of geological formations. Whenever a successful correlation is found, the engineer working with electrical logs has a useful tool for the determination of porsities of pay section?. One of the more successful formulae applicable to these correlations is the familiar equation empirically obtained by Archie.&apos; which F is the formation factor. $ is the porosity, and rn is an exponent called the cementation factor. When the for- mula applies, the cementation factor usually is found to be between 1.3 and 2.2. The values for formation factors experimentally obtained are often higher than simple pore geometry would lead one to expect. In an effort to account for such high values certain formulae have been derived based on a so-called "tortuosity concept." In deriving these formulae a synthetic porous body is usually assumed in which the solid material is an electrical non-conductor. and in which the pore system consists of three sets of fluid-filled tubes of uniform diameter connecting opposite faces of the body which, for convenience, is considered to be cubical in shape. The three sets of tubes account for the whole of the effective porosity of the body, and usually, it is specified that they do not interconnect. By considering that the pore tubes are not straight but tortuous, their resistance to the flow of electric currents can be made as high as needed to explain high formation factors. Such an explanation has some basis in fact, but it appears that the tortuosity concept is often incorrectly applied when other factors are largely responsible for observed high resistivities. Recently, Wyllie and Spangler have recognized that tortuosity as calculated by conventional formulae has little if any physical significance.&apos; RESISTIVITY AND THE CONSTRICTION CONCEPT Any explanation of high formation factors which depends solely on tortuosity of uniform pore paths necessarily ignores the effect that variations in the cross-sectional area of the conducting paths have on the resistivity of a body. Although, as previously pointed out, the calculation of such paths for an actual body is impossible, it will he shown that a synthetic pore network can be devised which will yield to analysis, and lead to results in agreement with the experimental data represented by Equation (1). The porous body to be considered is assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic or, for present purposes, identical in its characteristics in the three directions parallel to its coordinate axes. It will he assumed to be built of identical unit cubes, each of which contains a single pore network connecting all faces of the unit cube. A unit of such a pore network is shown

H. R. HANLEY*—I have been asked to discuss briefly the development of rotating cathodes for the electrolytic deposition of cadmium. The earliest recorded use of rotating cathodes was by Hoepfner at Frufurt, Germany about sixty years ago. He elec-trolized zinc chloride solution using diaphragms to separate electrodes. In the early experimental work of the Bully Hill Copper Mining and Smelting Co., Shasta County, Calif., rotating aluminum cathodes 4 ft in diam were used in the electrolysis of an acid zinc sulphate solution. Finished cathodes weighing up to 400 lb were produced. Because of mechanical difficulties, this type of cathode was abandoned for zinc, but was later used for cadmium because of the relative smoothness of deposit in comparison with stationary plates with comparable current densities. Cadmium sponge which forms on the cathode at moderate current densities (without special treatment) is entirely eliminated by a slow rotation. The rate of rotation of the cathode has an effect on the mechanical nature of the deposit. A high rate of rotation concentrates the adhering electrolyte on the shaft; a moderate rate appears to concentrate on the cathode a short distance out from the shaft tending to corrode the deposit in the form of a ring. At a very slow rotation (2 to 3 rpm) the adhering electrolyte gravitates nearly vertically, thus avoiding the cutting ring referred to above. The true explanation for the smoother deposits obtained on rotating cathodes may not be given definitely as the numerous factors involved are not thoroughly understood. Smooth deposits are obtained when the orderly growth of the metal crystals in the cathode lattice are disorganized. Thus the crystals form and grow for a very short interval when they are arrested and a new crystal forms. The continued growth of the original crystals provides large crystals and a rough deposit. Also if the acidity of the electrolyte is low, hydrogen gas bubbles adhere to the deposit. As the cathode is rotated the gas surface is brought into the atmosphere where they burst; thus the deposit is made on a surface relatively gas-free. An aluminum hub distance piece was riveted to each aluminum disk 4 ft in diam, slipped on a 4 1/2 in. steel shaft and pressed tight to prevent acid electrolyte seeping through to the shaft. The 9-cathode assembly was supported on insulated bearings. Electrical contact to the shaft was made through what was equivalent to a copper pulley. Sufficiently high conductivity brushes were placed on the face of the pulley to lead the current to the cathode bus bar. The assembly was driven by a link belt contacting a sprocket insulated from the shaft. The lead anodes were semicircular and supported on porcelain insulators placed on the bottom of the cell. Two anodes were provided for each cathode to permit an 8-in. space between them without increasing the ohmic resistance. This ample spacing permitted easy stripping of deposit with the assembly in place. Cathode cadmium was melted under 650 W cylinder oil. After casting, the primary slabs were remelted under molten caustic soda and cast into pencils 1 1/32 in. in diam. Rotating cathodes for deposition of cadmium are used at Risdon, Tasmania, and at Magdeburg, Germany. W. G. WOOLF*—This paper is very-interesting to me because in our work at the Electrolytic Zinc Plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. we had an exactly similar problem—that is, a method of producing cadmium from our purification residue, the recovery of the contained copper as a copper precipitate which could be sent to a copper smelter and the production of merchantable cadmium. It is interesting to me, not knowing of the work of the Risdon people, how closely we approximate them in their main metallurgy, diverging at several interesting steps which I would like to discuss for just a moment. For example, at Risdon they oxidize their purification residue. In our practice we take the current residue as it is produced in the purification department of the zinc plant and process it in the cadmium plant. The only oxidation that it obtains is the oxidation in the presses, the dumping of the presses and the collection and transportation of the residue to the cadmium plant. We find that the leaching of that residue does not necessarily require the oxidation step that the Risdon people evidently find necessary. The discussion of oxidation comes in again in the matter of the treatment of the precipitated cadmium sponge with zinc dust which again at Risdon is oxidized but which we do not attempt to oxidize except as it oxidizes itself in the storage. There is a partial oxidation which cannot be avoided, as Mr. David-sou pointed out, but we make no attempt to attain a complete oxidation and we dissolve the cadmium sponge in the sul-

Discussion of the paper of JAMES H. HANCE, presented at the New York meeting, .February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 299 to 326. FREDERIC P. DEWEY, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*).-I wish to congratulate Professor Hance and to thank him for his extremely valuable addition to the fund of data upon this subject. It presents clearly conclusive and incontrovertible proof of the unreliability of drill samples of this class of metal for determining the value of such bullion. I am afraid, however, that his hope that some one in the mint service might continue such an investigation upon a more elaborate and exhaustive scale is, for the present at least, doomed to disappointment. As a practical matter, the mint service is not now particularly interested in segregation in crude bullion. So much trouble and friction arose, -both in the original purchase and in the transfer from one institution to another, in handling segregated bullion, that it became necessary to adopt drastic measures and now it is seldom attempted to determine the value of such bullion in the service. When bullion known or even suspected of being segregated is presented for purchase, it is at once strongly refined in the pot and the disturbing elements so far removed that concordant assays may certainly be obtained from the dip samples and a reasonably fair agreement obtained from drill samples. The mint service prefers that the owner should refine his bullion himself, but if he does not we will do it at his expense and return the slag to him when desired. Much work has been done in the mint service trying to arrive at the value of deposits of segregated bullion without strong refining. It was no unusual thing for such deposits to be melted three times at the purchasing office and to have 30 to 40 assays on the metal made before buying it. Yet when shipped to a mint it was found necessary to melt two or three times more and to make 15 to 25 assays before the mint would accept the bar, and there were considerable differences between the valuations of the two offices. In what was undoubtedly the worst case ever investigated, the purchasing office melted the deposit, 953 oz., three times, with a loss of 105.5 oz., and made 46 assays; the mint melted three times, with a loss of 6.6 oz., and made 28 assays. The mint allowed the purchasing office 1.178 oz. of fine gold more than the purchasing office claimed, while an extensive investigation of the mint samples by the Bureau, in which over 100 independent assays were made in various service laboratories, indicated that the metal carried 0.7 to 0.9 oz. more of fine gold than the mint allowed. Activities of aluminum in solid Ni-A1 alloys have been determined between 20 and 60 at. pet Al and 1200" and 1400°K by an isopiestic method in which nickel specimens, heated in a temperature gradient, are equilibrated with aluminum vabor in a closed all-alumina system. The activity of aluminum shows a strong negative deviation from Raoult&apos;s law at low concentrations but increases by three orders of magnitude within the ß(NiAl) phase. The partial molar enthalpy and entropy of mixing are negative. Using Wagner and Schottky&apos;s theory of ordered compounds, a degree of disorder of 4 x 10 -4 for NiAl and 1.25 X 10-2 for FeAl has been calculated THE Ni-A1 system has been studied by a great number of investigators, and the results, as far as the phase diagram is concerned, have been compiled by Hansen.1 The phase boundaries from 0 to 50 at. pet Ni are well-established. At higher nickel contents the boundaries are still in dispute and an additional phase, A12Ni3, has been reported.&apos; The phase diagram is dominated by a very stable high-melting compound, NiA1, with a relatively wide range of homogeneity. Heats of formation of solid alloys have been determined calorimetrically by Oelsen and Middel3 from 20 to 95 at. pet Ni and by Kubaschewski4 from 25 to 80 at. pet Ni. According to the most recent compilation5 no other thermodynamic investigations have been reported for the Ni-A1 system. Due to the corrosive nature and the low vapor pressure of aluminum, a method has been employed for determining activities of aluminum which was previously developed for the Fe-A1 system.= Nickel specimens, heated in a closed evacuated alumina system in a temperature gradient, were equilibrated with aluminum vapor from a source within the system kept at constant temperature. After complete equilibration the specimens were analyzed and activities calculated from the known vapor pressure of aluminum. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The nickel specimens were made from wafers of electrolytic nickel (International Nickel Corp.) of 99.99 pet purity which were rolled to a 0.001-in.-thick foil by Driver-Harris Co. and to a 0.005-in.-thick sheet in our laboratory. The aluminum (Aluminum Corp. of America) had a purity of 99.99+ pct. The alumina tubes and crucibles were made of impervious recrystallized alumina with an alumina content of 99.7 pet (Triangle RR, Mor-ganite Inc.). Experimental Procedure. Annular specimens were punched from the sheet, the punching burrs removed, and the specimens degreased in carbon tetrachloride and acetone and weighed on a micro-balance to within an accuracy of ±0.01 mg. The specimens were positioned with alumina spacers along an alumina tube, and the positions measured. Aluminum metal was machined into cylindrical shape, and placed into an alumina crucible. The tube with the specimens was then inserted into a hole drilled into the aluminum metal. An alumina tube with its closed end at the top was slipped over the specimens so that its lower end fitted snugly into the alumina crucible. The assembled reaction tube was inserted into a mullite tube with a water-cooled brass head which had an opening for a quartz thermocouple protection tube and a metal-to-glass connection to a conventional vacuum system. A Pt-Pt 10 pet Rh thermocouple could be raised and lowered in the quartz tube which was placed along the outside of the alumina reaction tube. The mullite tube was heated by two separately controlled resistance-tube furnaces so that in the experimental temperature range an over-all temperature gradient of approximately 150o to 250°C could be imposed on the reaction tube. The position of the mullite tube was adjusted so that the surface of the aluminum metal was always at the temperature minimum. The reaction tube was thoroughly evacuated before and during slowly heating the assembly up to the melting point of aluminum. A pressure of less than 2 µ (Hg) was maintained during an experiment. Once the aluminum had melted, it isolated the contents of the alumina tube from the surroundings. Several times during an experiment the temperature gradient was carefully measured. An experiment lasted from 3 to 6 weeks and it was terminated by air cooling the evacuated mullite tube. For further details of the experimental procedure the paper on the Fe-A1 system6 should be consulted.

In a recent communication14 we have reported on the kinetics of the reactions of zirconium with O2, N2 and H2 as a function of the time, temperature and pressure variables. A systematic study was made and the results correlated with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions. This paper will present a similar study for titanium. Titanium and zirconium are members of the IV group of the periodic table and possess many similar physical and chemical properties as a result of their similar electronic configuration for the outer electrons. The two metals are relatively inert to both gas and liquid phase corrosion at room temperature. However, at moderate temperatures the metals become active and react readily with the common gases including O2, N2 and H2 which are of interest in this study. A study of the kinetics of these gas-metal reactions is of interest for three reasons: (1) to understand the rate of reaction of titanium and its role in the behavior of high temperature alloys; (2) to understand the practical difficulties of the reduction, refining and working of titanium; and (3) to correlate the data with fundamental theories of gas-metal reactions and crystal structure predictions. Literature Survey Several review papers8 and books4243 exist on the preparation and properties of titanium and its alloys. THE METAL Titanium has, at room temperature, a hexagonal lattice of the zinc type. Hagg19 gives a value of 2.953A for the (a) axis, a value of 4.729 for the (c) axis and a density of 4.427 at 20°C. Burgers and Jacobs6 have observed the transformation of the hexagonal to the body-centered cubic structure at 880°C and have established a value of 3.31 for the cube edge and a density of 4.31. TITANIUM-OXYGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 using a pressure change method have studied the reaction at temperatures of 742° and 1000°C and for a pressure of one-fifth of an atmosphere. The probabilities for reaction are calculated from kinetic theory and they report a value of 10-5 for O2 at 1000°C and 10-6 at 740°C. The titanium-oxygen system has been investigated by Ehrlich.10,11 Five phases are observed. Between (TiO2 and TiO1.90) an alpha-phase, consisting ofarutile lattice, is found. A beta-phase is observed between (TiO1.80 and TiO1.70). A gamma-phase is homogeneous between (TiO1.56 and TiO1.46) and has a structure of the corundum type. The delta-phase exists between TiO1.25 and TiO0.6 and has a sodium chloride structure. From TiO0.42 to Ti the metal structure is observed. The surface oxide films have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen.20 The rutile structure is observed in the temperature range studied, 300 to 700°C. Three crystalline modifications of TiO2 exist: rutile and anatase which are tetragonal and brookite which has an orthorhombic structure. Anatase is reported36 to exist in two forms: I and II. Anatase II changes to anatase I at 642°C. Anatase I is stable up to 915°C where rutile becomes the stable modification. At 1300°C rutile transforms to brookite which melts at 1900°C. The monoxide, TiO, may be prepared from the dioxide by high temperature reduction with carbon or magnesium. Its melting point is 1750°C. TITANIUM-NITROGEN Carpenter and Reavell6 report that at 1000°C a linear rate law is observed. The probability of reaction is given as 10-8 at 1000°C. Fast12 has studied the solubility of nitrogen and its effect on the mechanical properties of the metal. The crystal structure of TiN has been shown by several workers2&apos;21&apos;44 to follow the sodium chloride structure. However, the calculated density is found to differ from the pycnometric value. This is studied by Brager3,4 in detail. He has suggested that the titanium sites in the lattice are only partially filled at low temperatures. As the temperature of preparation is raised the vacant sites become occupied which expands the lattice and increases the hardness and density. An (a) value of 4.22Å is given for room temperature. TITANIUM-HYDROGEN The solubility and the crystal structures observed in this system have been reviewed in a recent book by Smith.40

In a series of papers the author and associates have discussed the influence of temperature on the tensile properties of metals.11-18 These papers present much information about the influence of temperature and the stress system on the conventional indices of mechanical properties, with special attention to the fracture stress. A recent study of the data, however, has revealed much additional information about the influence of temperature on the fundamental factors involved in the flow of metals. The present paper presents results of this study. Attention will be confined almost entirely to results derived from tension tests of unnotched cylindrical specimens at strain rates a little slower than those used in ordinary tension tests. According to a concept first presented by Ludwik and elaborated in recent papers by others,8,9,22,23 the mechanical state of a metal depends on the total plastic strain, but not on the temperature during straining, provided that the only structural changes are those essential to plastic deformation. In the summer of 1948, however, the author made the previously mentioned study of results of a general investigation by the author and associates and reached the conclusion that the mechanical state depends not only on the total strain, but also on the temperature during the straining. A number of diagrams were then prepared. These conclusions were presented without diagrams in a discussion last October of a paper by Dorn, Goldberg and Tietz.2 The metals used in the investigation on which this paper is based were Monel and oxygen-free copper. The Monel was supplied by the International Nickel Co. through the courtesy of Dr. W. A. Mudge. The copper was supplied by the Scomet Engineering Co. through the courtesy of Dr. Sidney Rolle. The data to be presented are based on results of tests at temperatures ranging between 165 and — 188°C. Description of the apparatus and methods of test are given in previous papers.1011&apos;1"2 The present paper is the first part of the general discussion of the influence to temperature on the stress-strain-energy relationship for metals. The next paper will deal with metals that are subject to structural changes other than those induced solely by plastic deformation. Influence of Temperature and Plastic Strain on the Flow Stress of Monel and Copper For a study of the influence of temperature on the stress-strain relationship, flow-stress curves obtained with annealed metals at various temperatures will be compared with curves obtained with the same metals after cold drawing or cold rolling at room temperature. Diagrams thus obtained with Monel and copper are shown in Fig 1 to 8. Fig 1 to 7 show the variation of the flow stress with temperature and plastic strain; Fig 8 is a diagram of a different type, derived from Fig 4 to 7. In Fig 1 to 7 strain is expressed in terms of A0/A, in which A0, and A represent the initial and current areas of cross-section. Since values of Ao/A are represented on a logarithmic scale, abscissas are proportional to true strains; moreover, the true strains representing prior plastic deformation and those representing subsequent strain during a tension test are directly additive. Fig 1 shows flow-stress curves obtained with annealed Monel. Five of the curves are based on results of tension tests. Between yield and the maximum load, the flow was under longitudinal tensile stress; between the maximum load and fracture, the local contraction induced transverse radial tensile stress. The portions of curves designated F, therefore, represent flow with increasing radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse stress S3 to the longitudinal stress Si. Curve Fo is based on the ultimate stresses of specimens taken from bars that had been cold drawn various amounts.17 Since the tensile stress at the maximum load is unidirectional, curve Fo represents the course that a flow-stress curve would take if the stress during an entire tension test could be kept unidirectional. The flow-stress curve F obtained at room temperature (Fig 1) has been established accurately by numerous measurements of the diameter of the specimen during the extension from yield to fracture.17 At the time of the experiments, however, no apparatus was available for measuring the diameter during tension tests at low temperatures. Nevertheless, curves have been established to represent with sufficient accuracy the flow at low temperatures. Each flow-stress curve must be tangent to a curve U, which starts at a point representing the ultimate stress of annealed metal. Since the ultimate stress is based on the area of

HE task of measuring the specific gravity of the -*- operating medium in a heavy-media separation system has never presented a particularly difficult problem because the medium is fairly stable and the overflow of the separatory vessel, as well as its underflow, can be sampled easily and accurately and the specific gravity of the suspension determined easily by weighing a known volume. However, while this method is simple and accurate it does require the operator to take the sample by hand and to weigh it and there is considerable temptation to avoid the periodic sampling if everything seems to be going well, or if something is occupying the attention of the operator. Furthermore all operators do not sample in exactly the same manner and considerable practice is required for two operators to be able to "check" each other to the last few hundredths, particularly if the sample is cut underneath the drainage screen where location of the point of sampling and load on the screens tends to influence the determination. While none of the above presents much of a problem, we have all recognized that some mechanical method of continuous measurement and recording would be advantageous since the operator would merely have to glance at the meter to check the gravity and to have an indication of the trend of any changes. Also if the instrument were of the recording type, a permanent record would be available for the guidance of the superintendent. The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. was the first heavy-media user to actually install such a recording meter. In 1946 they installed in their Central Mill at Cardin, Okla., a specific gravity recorder manufactured by the Bristol Co. of Water-bury, Conn. R. A. Barnes, of the Bristol Co., working with E. H. Crabtree, Jr. and Elmer Isern, of Eagle-Picher, made the application and worked out the problems of sampling and measuring. Their attempts to measure the specific gravity of the medium in the cone itself were not entirely successful and they resorted to an outside sample tube for actually making the determination. Because of the particular flowsheet used, it was possible to tap off from the medium return pipeline a stream of medium and divert it into the sampling tube, which was provided with a constant level overflow and a spigot underflow, and into which the bubbler tubes dipped. The Eagle-Picher installation was successful and its possibilities were recognized by the Mineral Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Co. It was decided to install a similar unit in the heavy-media pilot plant to investigate further its possibilities. Chief among these was the continuous record which it was felt would be proof of the steadiness of the gravity in a heavy-media cone, something which is not always appreciated by POtential users. Because the heavy-media pilot plant is required to operate at a wide range of specific gravities, it was realized that the unit would have to record all gravities from 1.25 to 3.50, and do it to the nearest 0.01. It would not be necessary to record all of this wide range on a single chart and the method selected was to have 4 bands, each band range overlapping the other a small amount and calibrated so that with standard charts one division would represent 0.01 sp gr. A shift from one band to another could be arranged without alteration of the instrument itself, being accomplished by a simple change in the bubble-tube lengths, as described later. Accordingly, a recording type instrument was purchased and installed. Because there were some advantages in doing so, the first installation attempted to measure the gravity of the cone proper by placing the bubble tubes in the cone. This was not at all satisfactory and the second scheme utilized a fixed vertical screen at the surface of the cone, and an external sample-tube arrangement. We were particularly anxious to make this work as we felt it would be advantageous to measure the top level of medium where the separation was actually being made, but we were doomed to disappointment because it was impossible to keep the screen clean of float. Since the top gravity of the cone is the most convenient place to sample for control, a launder about 2 in. wide was installed longitudinally beneath the

It has been shown1 that in poly-crystalline strips of high purity aluminum with a fairly random orientation distribution, grain growth progresses gradually until the average grain diameter reaches a value approximately equal to the strip thickness. Recent work at this laboratory led to the realization that grain growth might be impeded to a considerable extent in the presence of a sharply defined texture, where orientation differences between neighboring grains are small. In order to investigate this effect the following experiment was carried out with the same lot of high purity aluminum previously used for grain growth studies in randomly oriented material.&apos; Very large grain size was developed by grain growth at 650°C in specimens of 0.200 in. thickness. These specimens were then rolled to a thickness of 0.050 in. or 1.25 mm—a reduction of 75 pct. In the rolled strip each large grain corresponded to an elongated area easily identified by etching. After annealing for 1 to 25 min at 600°C and re-etching, these elongated areas were again recognizable. Within each area, corresponding to a single large grain before annealing, there formed by recrystallization a multitude of new grains with a fairly well developed preferred orientation. The orientation and the size of the new grains formed in areas corresponding to different large grains, varied widely depending on the orientation of the parent grains with respect to the rolling direction and the plane of rolling. Many areas were found where the average grain size was considerably smaller than the specimen thickness. Such an area occurred in a specimen cut in half before annealing. One half, containing a portion of the area in question, was annealed 1 min at 600°C, the other half, with the remaining portion of this area, for 25 min at the same tempera-Aluminum killed low carbon steel, § which is now used extensively for severe deep drawing or other difficult forming operations, is unusual in that its grain structure, after cold reduction and box annealing in accordance with conventional continuous sheet or strip mill practice, often is elongated, although at times it is equiaxed. Since this unusual structure has been found superior for many, but not all, severe forming operations, recrystallization of the steel, both at constant temperature and on continuous heating, was investigated and compared with that of rimmed steel in the hope that something might be learned about the mechanism of, and the factors controlling, the formation of such elongated grains. In this structure, the grains are elongated both in the lengthwise direction of the strip and transverse to this direction, even though nearly all of the extension in both hot and cold rolling is in the lengthwise direction. The grains are thus roughly pancake-shaped, being longer and wider than they are thick, as observed also by Burns and McCabe,1 and as illustrated by the typical structures shown in Fig 1. Fig la, representing a conventional longitudinal section, shows the length and thickness of the grains, whereas Fig Ib shows their length and width as seen by examining a section parallel to the sheet surface. Both illustrate the very irregular grain boundaries usually associated with the elongated grain shape. A finer equiaxed grain structure in this same grade is shown in Fig Ic. Either the elongated or the equiaxed structure may be present in the annealed product, and in rare instances the two types may coexist in a single specimen, as shown in Fig 1 d. Isothermal Recrystalliza-tion of Rimmed and Alamimum Killed Steel An aluminum killed steel known to have an elongated grain structure after conventional processing (Steel B, Table l), was selected for the initial recrystallization studies; for comparison, a rimmed steel, A in Table 1, was used. Samples of each in the form of hot rolled strip 0.075 and 0.095 in. thick, respectively, were cold rolled on a small laboratory mill in steps of about 0.010 in. per pass to obtain total reductions of 40 and 60 pct. Small pieces of the cold reduced strip were heated in lead at selected constant temperatures for one of several periods of time, then cooled in air. Rate of heating in the lead was, of course, very fast. Hardness of the cooled specimen was measured and a longitudinal section examined metallographically. Isothermal recrystallization curves for these two steels at 1050°F, based on hardness of the air cooled specimens, are shown in Fig 2 in which the amount of recrystallization corresponding to each plotted point is indicated. The marked difference in the behavior of these two types of steel is evident. After a corresponding amount of cold reduction, the rimmed steel recrys-tallizes in a much shorter time than the killed steel and the shape of its recrystallization curve, (plotted on a logarithmic time scale), is very different. The curve for rimmed steel indicates that recrystallization is analogous to isothermal transformation of aus-i.enite in that it proceeds at a progressively faster rate up to some 50 pct recrystallization, then at an increasingly slower rate. THERE is a disagreement among the various authors about the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2. Rostokerl and others2 stated that ZrCr2 had a C-14 (MgZn2) type of structure below 1000°C and a C-15 (MgCu2) type of structure at temperatures above 1000°C. Alisova3 and others4 reached the opposite conclusion and stated that the transformation temperature is close to the melting point of ZrCr2. A literature survey shows that various investigators3&apos;= who homogenized the specimens at a temperature higher than 1000°C have concluded that ZrCr2 had the C-15 structure at room temperature. Meanwhile, Jordan et al.4 reached similar conclusions without annealing the specimen. Other investigators1,2,6,7 who X-rayed the specimens in the as-cast condition without annealing reached different conclusions. The investigation reported herein was conducted with the aim of exploring the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2 by various heat treatment tests. The alloys for this examination were prepared from iodide-reduced zirconium crystal bars, 99.9 pct purity, and electrolytic chromium, 99.9 pct purity. They were melted in a nonconsumable electrode arc furnace with water-cooled copper crucible in a helium atmosphere. The melting loss of each alloy was less than 1.5 pct by weight. Chemical analysis of a randomly selected specimen indicated that there was a very close agreement between calculated and analyzed compositions. Before being heat-treated each specimen was encapsulated in a vycor or quartz tube inside which an argon atmosphere was maintained at a pressure of lower than 1 atm. In determining the crystal structure of each specimen with a Debye-Scherrer camera, the standard procedure8 for X-ray quality analysis (Hanawalt method) was followed. The different series of heat treatment tests in this investigation are tabulated in Tables I and 11. The tests in Series I, specimens from 1-1 to 1-9, which were similar to Rostoker&apos;s experiment1 indicated that the transformation temperature seemed to fall between 870° and 900°C and that the crystal structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperature seemed to be of the C-14 type. However, once the compound is transformed to C-15 type, it is impossible to reverse the transformation back to the C-14 type by first heating the specimen above 900°C and then annealing it slowly below 900°C as shown in Experiments II-1 to II-3. Thus, it appears that the specimen of ZrCr2 will transform from C-14 to C-15 structure when heated above 900°C but will not transform from C-15 to C-14 when annealed slowly passing 900° C even after the extremely slow cooling process such as indicated in the experiment of Specimen II-3. As a valid transformation temperature is a temperature at which the transformation is reversible, therefore the temperature 900°C (or other temperature close to 900°C) is not the transformation temperature for ZrCr2 and the C-14 structure is not the stable structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperatures. The C-14 structure is retained at room temperature because the transformation to C-15 structure is very sluggish and the fast cooling after melting does not allow enough time for the transformation to take place. Additional energy is required to alter the metastable condition of the C-14 structure. The sluggishness of this transformation was again demonstrated through another series of experiments. Four specimens with C-14 structure were taken. Then they were annealed at 900°C but each specimen was soaked for a different period of time, Table 11. X-ray diffraction patterns of this group indicated that the C-14 structure gradually disappeared as the soaking period was lengthened. The figures listed under the column "C-14 Structure, pct" were estimated from the intensity of the d = 2.330 line of the diffraction pattern corresponding to the structure. Notice that the intensity of this line became weaker for longer soaking periods. To determine the transformation temperature of ZrCr2, specimens with C-14 structure (as-cast condition) were annealed at 1300°, 1400°, 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C, respectively. A final specimen was first heat-treated to 1500°C in order to transform it to C-15 structure, then heat-treated at 1600°C again. From the X-ray analyses of this series of tests, Specimen Nos. III-1 to III-6, it is evident that a transition from C-15 structure at lower temperatures to the C-14 structure occurs at some temperature between 1550° and 1600°C.

It is perhaps not widely realized that extraction and saturation processes carried out on oil well core samples alter the properties of these samples to varying degrees. On the other hand it is felt by some that quick-freezing of core samples increases their permeability and porosity significantly. Accordingly, laboratory tests were carried out on 49 pairs of horizontally adjacent samples in order to differentiate between the effect of quick-freezing per se on permeability and porosity of the samples, as distinguished from the effect of the identical saturation treatment on permeability and porosity of the companion samples. Also, additional field data were obtained on comparison of frozen vs unfrozen companion samples. LABORATORY INVESTIGATION OF FREEZING us SATURATION EFFECTS Procedure The samples used in these tests were two-cm cubes cut in horizontally adjacent pairs from cores from eight Gulf Coast and Mid-Continent wells, which cores had not previously been frozen. These samples were extracted with carbon tetrachloride, dried, and air permeabilities run in the conventional manner. They were then evacuated and saturated with brine of 25,000 ppm sodium chloride content, and porosities determined by gain in weight. The samples were partially desaturated by evaporation down to an average brine saturation of 68 per cent. One sample from each pair was quick-frozen by covering with dry ice after wrapping in a single layer of paper, and allowed to remain frozen for about two hours; the companion sample from each pair was not frozen. After thawing the frozen sample, all samples were immersed in tap water overnight in order to leach out most of the brine. Air permeabilities were re-run, and the samples were again saturated with brine to determine a second porosity value. For purposes of averaging of data, the samples were grouped according to four permeability ranges, from 0 to 10, 10 to 100, 100 to 1,000, and 1,000 to 3,840 md. Average permeability and porosity changes for the frozen vs the unfrozen adjacent samples are shown in Table 1. Discussion As may be seen from Table 1, the averages of the per cent permeability increases for the quick-frozen samples ranged from 3.8 to 12.9 per cent among the four permeability groups. The average changes among the four groups of unfrozen companion samples ranged from a decrease of 0.2 per cent to an increase of 9.3 per cent. There was no particular correlation of these changes with magnitude of permeability; however, the increase for each group of frozen samples paralleled the increase for the corresponding unfrozen samples. The differences between the two sets of values are believed to be a valid indication of the effect of the quick-freezing in itself, since the treatment of the two samples in each pair was identical except for freezing. The permeability changes which are strictly the result of the quick-freezing are shown in the sixth column of Table 1. These range from a decrease of 0.9 per cent to an increase of 4.0 per cent; the overall weighted average is 1.2 per cent, as compared to an average increase of 6.8 per cent caused by the saturation treatment of the samples not frozen. The average porosity changes are in general smaller than the changes in permeability, and range from a decrease of 2.3 per cent to an increase of 3.3 per cent. The overall weighted average change ascribed to the quick-freezing is 1.0 per cent of porosity. Many factors can contribute to the changes in permeability and porosity observed when subjecting cores to the simple processes used in these tests. Such are: hydration and swelling of clay, adsorption of ions, changes in surface structure and wettability, expansion and compression effects due to ice formation, shrinking and cracking, leaching of salts and colloids, displacement of particles resulting in either blocking or enlarging of pore openings. Whatever particular mechanisms are involved. however, it is apparent not only from this study but also from other investigations in the literature&apos; not directly concerned with quick-freezing, that the effects produced by commonly used extraction, saturation and drying techniques may be of considerable magnitude The results of this study indicate that for the particular samples and techniques used, such effects are of the order of five to six times the effect of quick-freezing. insofar as changes in permeability are concerned. It may be argued that these samples might not include extremely shaly material where the effect of freezing upon permeability may be much greater. However, had such material been available for these tests, it would undoubtedly have been very susceptible also to alteration by the extraction and saturation treatment used. To investigate this point further, the individual sample data were re-grouped according to the magnitude of the average per cent permeability increases for the pairs of samples, irrespective of permeability. The many factors that control bumping must be carefully studied for each coal seam where bumps occur, and specifications known to exclude bumping should be incorporated in the mining plans. This calls for complete knowledge of the seam&apos;s characteristics and its adjacent strata, and in many instances these characteristics are not revealed until the seam is actually mined. Pressure and shock bumps, the two general types, occur jointly and separately. In this discussion no differentiation will be made. Whether pressure or shock, they are treated as bumps, and both must be eliminated. Bumps in mines have occurred in several places throughout the coal fields of the world. A study of many of these occurrences indicates that geologic characteristics, development planning, and mining procedure have contributed. But more specifically, there are conditions usually associated with bumps: thickness of cover, strong strata directly on or above the seam, a tough floor or bottom not subject to heaving, mountainous terrain, stressed and steeply pitching beds, and the proximity of faults and other geologic structures. Mine planning should incorporate these known factors (not necessarily in order of importance): 1) Main panel entries should be limited to those absolutely necessary to ventilate and serve the mine. This reduces the span over which stresses may be set up that will later throw excessive pressures on barrier and chain pillars when they are being removed. 2) Barrier pillars should be as wide as practicable so that they will be strong enough to carry the loads thrown on them when final mining is being carried out. 3) Pillars should never be fully recovered on both sides of a main entry development if the barrier and chain pillars are to be removed later. The excessive pressures placed on the main chain and pillar barriers by arching of the gob areas can result in bumping when these barriers are being removed. 4) Full seam extraction is better accomplished by driving to the mine boundary and then retreat-drawing all pillars. If there are natural boundaries in the mine—such as faults, want areas, and valleys —retreat should be started there. 5) Pillars should be uniform in size and shape. The entire development of the mine should call for uniform blocks with entries driven parallel and perpendicular. Only angle break-throughs should be driven when necessary for haulage, etc. 6) For better distribution of rock stresses and reduction of carrying loads per unit area, both chain and barrier pillars should be developed with the maximum dimensions. 7) Pillars should be open-ended when recovered. If they are oblong, the short side should be mined first. Both sides of a block should not be mined simultaneously, but under no circumstance should the lifts be cut together. 8) Pillar sprags should not be left in mining. If they are not recoverable, they should be rendered incapable of carrying loads. 9) Pillar lines should be as short as practicable. (Three or four blocks are adequate). Experience has shown that rooms should be driven up and retreated immediately. The longer a room stands, the more unfavorable the mining conditions. This contributes to bumping. 10) Pillars should not be split in abutment zones (high stress areas lying close to mined out areas) and if slabbing is necessary, it should be open-ended. 11) Pillars should be recovered in a straight line. Irregular pillar lines will allow excessive pressures thrown on the jutting points. Experience has shown that the lead end of the pillar line can be slightly in advance. 12) Pillar lines should be extracted as rapidly as possible. This appears to lessen pressures on the line and render abutment zones less hazardous. 13) Extraction planning should call for large, continuous robbed out areas. Robbing out an area too narrow to get a major fall of the strata above the seam tends to throw excessive pressures on a pillar line. 14) Timbering in pillar areas should be adequate but not excessive. Too heavy timbering or cribbing is likely to retard roof falls and throw excessive weight on the pillar line. 15) Experience has shown that when pillar lines have retreated 800 to 1000 ft from the solid, bumps can occur. Because this distance may vary in different seams, impact stresses should be studied for each individual condition. In any event, extra precautions should be taken against bumps in this area. This list of controlling factors may or may not be complete. It probably is not, but it covers most of the problem&apos;s significant aspects. The question is whether or not bumping can be eliminated. The answer is that bumping can be minimized and possibly eliminated if these and other established factors are thoughtfully considered and incorporated in the mining and extraction plans. If a mine has already been developed or the pattern set so that little change can be made, then it will be necessary to adjust to the most nearly practicable system that can incorporate the known factors.

First evidence of bauxite in Jamaica resulted from an analysis of a soil sample collected at Bull Savannah in 1938 during a systematic local investigation of the island&apos;s soil types. Results of subsequent work indicated the possibility of the occurrence of deposits of commercial grade and dimensions, and in 1942, with a view to emergency development of the deposits as a war measure, the Jamaican Government declared all bauxite in the colony to be Crown property.

ONE of the more pressing problems faced by the coal industry today is the development of adequate means for meeting conservation laws, particularly those involving stream pollution, in various parts of the country. Discharge of dirty coal washery water into streams and rivers is almost universally frowned upon. Many states have enacted laws carrying heavy fines to curb the practice. The Prins stream-cleaner is one of the latest machines to enter the market. It is closely related to the cyclone thickener in principle. Eleven stream-cleaners are currently operating, ranging in size from 4 to 16 in. diam. In more recent installations the water enters directly in line and on a tangent with the impeller. The impeller consists of a vertical shaft up through a packing gland and bearings, and a V-belt pulley. The lower part is a tubing fastened to the shaft above, extending through the water intake compartment and provided with six vertical flat bars welded to the tubing. Portholes are situated in the upper end of the tubing, immediately below the point where shaft and tubing join together. The portholes are placed so that they are in open communication with the upper compartment of the stream-cleaner from which the processed water is discharged. The impeller is motor driven with a wide range vari-pitch drive employed between motor and impeller. The motor is mounted vertically, and the mounting provided with a vertical hinge allowing for needed adjustment of the wide range vari-pitch drive. The dirty coal washery water entering the machine under 20 lb psi pressure, flows from the compartment above the impeller, between the impeller blades, and is whirled around in the vertical section of the impeller enclosure. The speed of the impeller supplies centrifugal force and velocity required for separating suspended solids from water. The lower part of the machine consists of a cone, whose action is similar to other machines of the same type. The underflow discharge orifice is a cold rolled steel block machined to correspond with the cone angle and allows insertion of steel tubes of different diam. On 16 in. machines a 1 ¾ in. ID vertical discharge pipe is used. Provision is made for attaching a curved section of the same diam to the vertical pipe, to which, in turn, different lengths of horizontal pipe can be connected. Curved Pipe Advantageous It has been found that a curved pipe offers resistance to discharged material flow. In addition, the rotary motion of the underflow can be easily arrested in a curved pipe. Impeller speed of the 16 in. diam machine is provided from 400 to 800 rpm. A speed of about 474 rpm is suitable for maintenance of a constant underflow in coal slurry. In one installation 5x ¼ in. coal is cleaned in a Jeffrey Baum type washer at a 225 tons per hr rate. Washer installation is of the conventional type and a drag type sludge tank is used for water clarification purposes. Capacity of the water system, including the Baum washer, is about 40,000 gal. Before placing the stream-cleaner in operation, it was necessary to flush out the entire system every five days of two shift operations. The only time the system is drained now is for repair work on the sludge conveyor or the rig. The suction line of the stream-cleaner pump terminates in a number of small branch lines located at a depth of about 4 ft above the sludge conveyor. Each branch line extends the full width of the tank and is provided with four intake ports, each one with a funnel shaped inlet projecting downward. The arrangement provides an extensive pick-up area, for dirty water, and the inlets are arranged for a low rim velocity, preventing the taking in of coarse particles. The funnels are also arranged to extend up or down in the tank. They are set to pick up -60 mesh material exclusively.&apos; The material is a high ash and high sulphur product and thus has to be disposed in the refuse conveyor. The underflow of the stream-cleaner is discharged on top of the washery refuse which is carried in a drag type horizontal conveyor, discharging into another refuse conveyor inclined at 30º with a short horizontal loading section. Some Disadvantages The impeller inherits certain disadvantages because of the nature of its construction. Additional moving parts make it subject to wear and maintenance costs. The advantage of being able to maintain a constant speed, however, to produce desired water velocity in the machine outweighs the drawbacks. Better separation between water and solids can be obtained by regulating time of residence of water through adjustment of valves in the intake and discharge lines. The amount of fines encountered during plant operation will vary because of higher or lower moisture in coal passing over fine coal vibrating screens. Even the amount of fines picked up by underground loading machines will be inconstant. Consequently, the percentage of solids will vary in water to be processed. The velocity in the feedlines to the slurry thickeners will fluctuate, with the required water velocity lacking. Another advantage advanced for the machine is its ability to operate on 15 to 25 lb line pressures at the water intake, reducing pump power required and pump maintenance.
