THE use of oxygen as a bath reagent in hearth furnaces during the refining period is a familiar story. Investigations and tests in which oxygen was substituted for iron ore to reduce carbon date back 25 years and include the work of Bigge,1 Browne,2 and Chelius.3 During this past year the majority of the experimental work in the use of oxygen was carried on mainly in open-hearth shops, since it was felt that the greater field for application lay in this type of furnace. Much constructive work was done in evaluating the carbon-oxygen relationships, as reported by Slottman and Lounsberry4 and by Hughes.5 Steelmakers using the electric furnace have been actively engaged meanwhile in an experimental program of their own, with such success that the oxygen injection pipe has become a tool in the day to day production of low-carbon and stainless steels.

The concept of "unitization" comes from the petroleum industry. Of this, Campbell says: "Unitization is the process whereby the owners of adjoining properties pool their reserves and form a single unit for the operation of the properties. The revenue from operation of this unit is then divided in accordance with the basis established in the unit agreement. "The purpose of such an agreement is to produce the reserves more efficiently and thus to increase the profit to every participant."'

THE year 1923 has seen new developments in the only French wells, i.e., those of Pechelbronn, Alsace. The output of the two pits now in operation totaled more than 75,000 tons, although there was a two months' strike. It is expected that 1924 will see an output of 85,000 tons; and 1925, 100,000 tons. A new pit has just been put in operation (fourth pit; the third not being in operation). The oil and the oil sands are extracted at a depth of 350 meters. Special attention has been given to the development of the distillation and refinery plants, particularly the manufacturing of lubricating oils. The present output of the lubricating-oil factories is approximately 20,000 tons neutral oils; 20,000 tons spindle oils, together with 2000 tons of paraffin. Engineers are introducing the most modern American processes of refinery and distillation. The company has 3000 employees. The capital of the company has just been increased from 45,000,000 francs to 81,000,000 francs. Some other drilling has been done in the Auvergne and Landes districts, and some oil has been found, but in too small quantities for commercial operation. Great hopes, however, are entertained of finding large quantities of oil, and the French Chambers have voted a special fund of 20,000,000 francs for investigating oil in France. Much work has also been done in the Colonies but without much success; oil is found in different districts of Tunis, but in relatively small quantities. In Morocco, drillings have not been successful. A prospecting mission recently returned from Madagascar gave an optimistic report concerning the oil conditions on the Island. Prospectings are being made also in French Indo-China. The present domestic yearly consumption is about: Gasoline 750,000 metric tons, kerosene 70,000 metric tons, automobile lubricating oil 75,000 metric tons.

The world's petroleum production in 1928 is estimated at 1,322,896,-000 bbl., an increase of about 62,000,000 bbl. over 1927, as compared with an increase of over 133,000,000 bbl. in the previous year. The daily average was close to 3,600,000 bbl., of which the fields on the American continent produced about 84 per cent. The most important development during the year has been the partial success of the attempts to temporarily control production without appealing to legislation and, as a consequence, the increasing realization that, in order to reach a permanent cure for this situation, some form of legislation is necessary to' make possible the conservation of the oil supply and the stabilization of the industry. The importance of such a control over American production is not merely local but worldwide, as the American oil supply is now and for years to come will be the controlling factor of the industry. United States.—Production in the United States, which in 1927 increased about 15 per cent. over the previous year, remained practically stationary in 1928, the total being estimated at 902,000,000 bbl., or 68.2 per cent. of the world's output. This uniformity in production during the last two years was due primarily to the curtailment of output from wells already drilled, it being estimated that the available or shut-in production at the end of the year was close to 500,000 bbl. per day, or equivalent to the combined production of Venezuela and Russia, the countries ranking second and third. Venezuela.—With a production estimated at 106,000,000 bbl., Venezuela has trebled its output in the last three years. The increase in 1928 was 43,000,000 which placed this country as second in rank, a position which it should easily maintain for years to come. The output could have been considerably larger had not the oversupply in the United States made it advisable for Venezuelan operators to enter into tentative conservation agreements. Russia.—In Russia, production has doubled in the last five years, and reached a new peak in 1928 with an output estimated at 87,800,000 bbl., or an increase of 10,000,000 bbl. over the previous year. Measurement has been made of the organic sulfur concentration in coal macerals using microanalytical techniques in the transmission electron microscope. This technique utilizes measurements of x-rays emitted by the sulfur atoms embedded in the hydrocarbon constituents and the bremsstrahlung x-rays generated in the matrix. It is a simple technique for thin specimens and yields reliable results. Although it can be used to measure the average organic sulfur content of coal, it is most useful in determining organic sulfur in extremely small volumes of material. Variations in organic sulfur content can be measured at a scale unimagined earlier. This TEM technique also has application for determination of organic chlorine, phosphorous, potassium and other elements often found distributed through the hydrocarbon constituent of fuels.

THE mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. 110 W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20). Pure trona contains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. ANALYSES Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells[t] and found to be exceptionally pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nightengale[$] for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO3.2CaCO3), which he named shortite,2 after Maxwell N. Short.* He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. [ ] In addition to the 10 ft. I in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating reserves. In the part of the core between 1590 ft. 3 in. and I600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. For the first time in the history of the Venezuelan petroleum industry production exceeded 200 million barrels. The total production for all fields amounted to 205,430,869 bbl., which is more than 9 per cent of the world's 1939 total. This is an increase of over 15 million barrels or 8.0 per cent above the 1938 figure, which, compared with the slightly less than 2 per cent increase of the 1938 figure over 1937, shows the marked activity in Venezuela during the past year. The Maracaibo Lake fields are still the predominating factor in Venezuelan production, showing an increase of approximately 9½ million barrels over last year's figure and accounting for 71.8 per cent of Venezuela's total. Lagunillas continues to hold precedence as a single field, having yielded 47.1 per cent of the accumulative total and 39.4 per cent of 1939's total. This field showed an increase of slightly more than 3½ million barrels over 1938. Tia Juana, the second largest field, attained a record production, increasing its percentage of the Venezuelan total from 23.4 in 1938 to 23.7 in 1939. The La Rosa field, which includes Punta Benitez and Ambrosio, declined from 13.7 to 12.0 per cent; Bachaquero, the southernmost Lake field, which came into regular production at the end of 1938, contributed over 31/3 million barrels. Quiriquire, in eastern Venezuela, ousted La Rosa as the third largest producing field, and, although production increased by 11/3 milliorl barrels, percentage of the total declined from 13.2 to 12.9. Mene Grande, the oldest field, declined from 6.6 per cent in 1938 to 5.9 in 1939. Tem-blador produced for a whole year for the first time and yielded 3,647,867 bbl. The Colon district, in the Maracaibo Lake area, comprising the Tarra-Los Manueles fields, showed slight increases, as also did Cumarebo and Pedernales. Construction of the 16-in. pipe line from Oficina to Puerto La Cruz (Guanta), the longest line of this size in the world, was completed toward the end of the year and this new field in eastern Venezuela started shipping oil in December. In a previous article1 preliminary experiments were described, indicating the possibilities of a quantitative spectroscopic method for the determination of small amounts of lead in copper, which would be accurate and rapid, and could be carried out in the refining plant by one not skilled in chemical analysis. The present paper deals with the development of the method in the factory, giving the details of apparatus and its standardization, and presenting a comparison of the accuracy of the method with that of the standard electrolytic determination. On the banks of Huzzah Creek there is a roadhouse where a group of Ozark folks were whiling away a Sunday afternoon last spring. "How about some of that 'Who Broke the Lock Off the Hen House Door,' " suggested Spinny. The old man obligingly picked up the fiddle and began the sprightly tune. His long, seamed face had ruddy cheeks and a grey stubble jaw. A thick fedora was pushed back off his scraggly hair and he wore a heavy jacket. It was 73 degrees fetchin up for 75 on that May afternoon, so naturally he sweated. The Ozark is fiddling country. The natives, to whom a half dollar looks as big as a manhole cover, put great store by fiddling, along with the other fine things of life such as fishing and horse raising. On the wooded hills, 1200 to 1700 ft above sea level, there are numerous tumbling streams with plump fish, and in clearings along the roller coaster roads are long-legged, frisky looking horses. People in the Ozarks have a reputation for self-reliance. However, they are cheery and friendly to strangers. Trespassers are very seldom shot at-except if they do something wrong or by accident.

During 1938, Colombia witnessed greater activity in oil prospecting and development than in any previous year in its history; more wells were drilled, more potential production established, more geological and geophysical work was accomplished, and more leases and concessions were acquired. Many companies, including the Texas, Socony Vacuum, Richmond (subsidiary of the Standard Oil of California), the Shell, and Tropical, contributed to this activity. Probably the most noteworthy development was in connection with the Barco Concession, which forms part of the Maracaibo Basin in eastern Colombia, adjacent to the Venezuelan frontier. There a great deal of preparatory work was accomplished in addition to camp and other construction, 20 producing wells were drilled and work was begun on the construction of a 12-in. pipe line to transport the oil to the port of Covenas, a distance of 260 miles. It is reported {hat 58,000 bbl. daily initial production was established during the year and is awaiting an outlet through this pipe line. Leasing and exploratory operations in Colombia continued active throughout the year; applications were made for concessions covering more than 1,100,000 acres of national lands and, in addition, leases were taken up on large areas of privately owned lands. IN providing 65,000 tons of broken muck per day for shovel operation in a large open pit copper mine, drilling equipment and efficient use of that equipment is of prime importance. To improve existing drilling efficiencies, a large electric rotary drill capable of drilling 12-in. holes was purchased in May 1955. At Chino 96 pct of the blasting is done with 12-in. holes because: 1) the large holes break the optimum amount of material to reduce trackshifting to a minimum, 2) better fragmentation is obtained from a relatively short column of powder, and 3) longer spacing results in greater tonnage broken per foot drilled. From 1955, when it was purchased, through October 1956, the rotary drill has drilled 95,701 ft at a rate of 167.4 per shift in various locations and types of ground encountered in the mine. (This includes moving time and all other delays while a crew is on the machine.) The machine has been worked two shifts per day, seven days per week, and has been available 68 pct of this time.

Coal mining in the State of Washington offers many interesting problems for the mining engineer, due to the varied physical conditions occurring in different fields, and often in the same mine. The different coal seams worked in the same mine commonly require different mining and transportation methods for economical operation. The coal measures have inclinations ranging from 5' to vertical, and in the same mine the dip of the coal may vary from 30' to 50 . In all fields, the seams are extensively faulted, folded, and sheared. The quality of the coal produced ranges from brown lignite to bituminous coking coal, the following being typical analyses: Very little of the coal contains as much as 0.75 per cent. sulfur. The brown lignites occur mostly in Lewis and Thurston Counties, and as a rule are very cheaply mined. This coal has been successfully used in locomotives of the Oregon & Washington Railroad, after equipping them with specially designed fireboxes. The sub-bituminous coals occur in all the coal-mining counties. Their cost of production varies widely, according to the character of the formations, the pitch, and the wall conditions. This makes a fairly good steam coal, but the lump is used mostly for domestic trade, after grading into lump, nut, and pea. The coking coal is used for making coke, and for locomotive and other boiler fuel. It yields a strong metallurgical coke, quite high in ash, though seldom exceeding 18 per cent. ash. WHEN plants decay in a peat bog the woody parts form a brown pasty mass, or peat muck, largely soluble in. alkalis. This brown matter has been termed "ulmin." The same material, but commonly black in color, is found in coal, and there is evidence of the similarity between the material forming the main bulk of the coal and the bulk of the more recently decayed material in peat bogs. The. more recent or low-rank coals, such as lignite, little removed from the peat stage, contain notable percentages of alkali-soluble ulmins, but the percentage decreases with increased, degree of coalification and is negligible in bituminous or higher rank coals. The determination of the alkali-soluble ulmins in any coal gives, therefore, an indication, of its degree of coalification or rank. Coals which contain few or no ulmins soluble in alkalis do contain ulmins which can be rendered soluble by oxidation. The higher the rank of the coal, the more difficult it is to oxidize the insoluble ulmins and make them soluble. High-rank coals can be differentiated by oxidation tests on the, insoluble ulmins; but low-rank coals can be characterized by both their soluble and insoluble ulmins. This paper deals with the determination and significance of the alkali-soluble ulmins, present, as such in- the coal. The chemical nature and composition of ulmins are not discussed.

The elite group of companies below represent the mining sector of Fortune magazine's June Directory listing the 500 U.S. industries that chalked up the largest dollar sales volume in 1966. The companies are listed according to their 1966 sales rank, which is given along with their 1965 rank for comparative purposes. All of the firms except two-Freeport Sulphur and Texas Gulf Sulphur-were in the Fortune Directory last year, and both these exceptions have been counted among the top 500 in former years. The one mining name that is missing from last year's list-Consolidation Coal-has actually jumped from number 217 to 4 by virtue of its merger with Continental Oil. As can be seen from the Industry Medians, the mining industry as a whole boosted its sales 17.8%, in 1966, making it the seventh largest gainer among the 22 industrial classifications covered in the Directory. By comparison, 1965 mining sales increased 10.2%, a gain which was surpassed by 13 other industries. In two other comparative tables, mining leads the field, topping the entire list in return on sales and in assets per employee.

The production of petroleum in Germany during 1932 totaled about 1,608,558 bbl., a slight increase over the 1, 602,517 bbl. produced in 1931. A decline, as shown in Table 1, occurred chiefly in the Volkenroda (Thuringia) field. The total production of the other fields (salt domes), however. reached a new record, about 21 per cent above 1931. The transient flow of gases in long pipe lines is a problem of industrial interest. The present discussion deals with the application of the conservation of momentum and material to the transient flow of gas in conduits which are long with respect to their diameter. Solutions of the resulting equations include consideration of variations in friction and specific volume of the fluid as functions of time and position along the conduit. The changes in state along the pipe line are established as a function of time. The methods proposed may be extended to other situations. The flow of compressible fluids under steady conditions' has been considered in detail. Primary emphasis was placed on the development of simple means of taking into account the non-uniform flow' realized in long conduits under such conditions. Binder2 discussed the essential differences between the flow of compressible and uoncompressible fluids. Bonilla" proposed direct methods of solution for equations describing isothermal flow in long pipes. Similar considerations limited to steady flow have been discussed by Ruth.' Palsgrove 5 sugrested a graphical means of solving specific problems relating to the flow of gases in conduits of uniform section. Some of the basic concepts of the flow of a compressible viscous fluid in straight tubes have been described by Kuo.6 Problems of this type require knowledge of the equation of state of the fluid. In many cases it liar been convenient to assume that the fluid follows the relationship ascribed to a perfect gas. The treatment of unsteady flow of compressible fluids is less complete. This state of affairs result* from the fact that the differential equations relating pressure and flow rate with time and position for unsteady flow are nonlinear in character.' Muskat and Wyckoff presented an excellent treatment of the situation in laminar Bow where inertia forces were not of controlling importance. Somewhat earlier Hurst9 discussed the uncteady flow of fluids in petroleum reservoirs. Helhering-ton. MarRoberts. and Huntington'" established experimentally the pressure distribution and accumulative flow rate of natural gas through an unconsolidated sand. Recently Joffe11,12 conhitlcretl the specific problem of the flow of natural gas in relatively long.,. pipe lines for unsteady conditions with emphasis upon the economic feusibility of the storage of gas in such a reservoir. These discussions were based upon approximations of the partial differential equations applying to the condititons of flow. The results were descriptive of the physical situation and indirated the effertiveness of large pipe lines as cyclic storage facilities for natural gas. The advent of analog computers" has increased materially the practicality of solving nonlinear partial differential expressions. Several iterative numerical and graphical methods14,15,16 have been developed to solve nonlinear equations. However, it appears that the pair of simultaneous nonlinear partial differential equations involved in problems of this nature are not directly susceptible to solution by presently available analog computer or formal iterative numerical techniques. Nevertheless. graphical analyses afford a means of obtaining data of engineering value without special equipment. MATHEMATICAL CONSIDERATIONS Since the length of the conduit is large in comparison to the cross section in the cases to be considered, it is possible to treat the characteristics of the flow as independent of position in the cross section of the conduit. This possibility follows since the energy- connected with the velocity profile is small compared to that required to overcome the friction associated with its movement throughout the length of the line. Average values of the pressure. velocity. kinetic energy. momentum, and specific volume may he assigned to the fluid at any particular cross section. From a mathematical viewpoint this may be expressed in the following way for velocity: µ = µ(?X)..........(1) The uncertainties introduced by such assumptions usually are negligible when the ratio of length to diameter is greater than the order of 1.000. On this basis a volume element ma!. be considered to occupy the entire cross section of the conduit. Such an element is presented in Fig. 1.

In many cases it liar been convenient to assume that the fluid follows the relationship ascribed to a perfect gas. The treatment of unsteady flow of compressible fluids is less complete. This state of affairs result* from the fact that the differential equations relating pressure and flow rate with time and position for unsteady flow are nonlinear in character.' Muskat and Wyckoff presented an excellent treatment of the situation in laminar Bow where inertia forces were not of controlling importance. Somewhat earlier Hurst9 discussed the uncteady flow of fluids in petroleum reservoirs. Helhering-ton. MarRoberts. and Huntington'" established experimentally the pressure distribution and accumulative flow rate of natural gas through an unconsolidated sand. Recently Joffe11,12 conhitlcretl the specific problem of the flow of natural gas in relatively long.,. pipe lines for unsteady conditions with emphasis upon the economic feusibility of the storage of gas in such a reservoir. These discussions were based upon approximations of the partial differential equations applying to the condititons of flow. The results were descriptive of the physical situation and indirated the effertiveness of large pipe lines as cyclic storage facilities for natural gas. The advent of analog computers" has increased materially the practicality of solving nonlinear partial differential expressions. Several iterative numerical and graphical methods14,15,16 have been developed to solve nonlinear equations. However, it appears that the pair of simultaneous nonlinear partial differential equations involved in problems of this nature are not directly susceptible to solution by presently available analog computer or formal iterative numerical techniques. Nevertheless. graphical analyses afford a means of obtaining data of engineering value without special equipment. MATHEMATICAL CONSIDERATIONS Since the length of the conduit is large in comparison to the cross section in the cases to be considered, it is possible to treat the characteristics of the flow as independent of position in the cross section of the conduit. This possibility follows since the energy- connected with the velocity profile is small compared to that required to overcome the friction associated with its movement throughout the length of the line. Average values of the pressure. velocity. kinetic energy. momentum, and specific volume may he assigned to the fluid at any particular cross section. From a mathematical viewpoint this may be expressed in the following way for velocity: µ = µ(?X)..........(1) The uncertainties introduced by such assumptions usually are negligible when the ratio of length to diameter is greater than the order of 1.000. On this basis a volume element ma!. be considered to occupy the entire cross section of the conduit. Such an element is presented in Fig. 1.

During 1937 the Russian oil industry made very satisfactory progress in its exploration branch and added considerably to its proven reserves in the older producing districts, while several entirely new potential areas were opened for development by discovery wildcats. The exploitation of known fields, however, suffered greatly from internal political difficulties, referred to as "sabotage," and was also seriously handicapped by the requirements for national defense under the duress of a grave international situation. More particularly, the necessity for preparing for a major war resulted during 1937 in short-rationing of the oil industry in its iron, steel and rubber requirements, affecting quantitatively drill pipe, casing, tubing and the rubber equipment of automobiles, and qualitatively much of the oil-field machinery for which it was either impossible or difficult to obtain iron or steel of required specifications, which necessitated manufacture of heavier and unwieldy equipment and caused directly and indirectly an unavoidable major curtailment of drilling operations below the planned footage. War-preparation measures during 1937 also required accumulation of a large gasoline reserve in the Vladivostok area and inasmuch as shipments from California can be made much more cheaply than from Caucasian refineries, either by tank cars across Siberia or by tankers via Suez Canal and Indian Ocean, some 2,000,000 bbl. of gasoline was imported from the United States in the past year, resulting in a decline of 46.98 per cent in net exports of all petroleum products from Russia below the 1936 net export volume, which is the lowest level since 1925. Production of crude oil during 1937 is estimated at 212,742,000 bbl. as compared with 202,543,700 bbl. produced in 1936, an increase of 5.04 per cent, but 11 per cent below the planned output. There were no major readjustments as to the source of crude-oil production, Baku district still accounting for the largest share; that, is, 77.21 per cent of the total. Exploration operations were outstandingly successful during the past year, major discoveries having been made on the Apsheron Peninsula, in Grozny and Maikop-Kuban districts, in Ural-Permian Basin, in Middle Volga-Samara district and other areas.
