Production of crude petroleum in Mexico during 1935 totaled approximately 40,082,000 bbl., an increase of 1,925,000 bbl. over the previous year. Successful development continued in the Poza Rica field during the year, increasing production in that area from 3,708,000 bbl. in 1934 to 9,542,000 in 1935. The output of the South fields (Golden Lane) area decreased by 3,000,000 bbl. during the year, and the heavy-oil district of the Northern fields by 1,500,000 bbl. Production in the Tehuantepec fields showed a slight gain. Production of natural gasoline increased from 430,000 to 600,000 bbl. in 1935. Crude run to stills in local refineries is estimated at 30,000,000 bbl., some 4,000,000 bbl. more than in the previous year. Exports of crude and refined products were approximately 22,000,000 bbl., or 2,000,000 bbl. less than in 1934. Exclusive of ships bunkers, domestic consumption increased about 900,000 bbl. during the year, reaching an estimated total of 14,500,000 barrels. Only 74 wells were completed, as compared to 148 in 1934 and 91 in 1933. In proven areas 58 completions resulted in 33 producers and 25 failures. In northeastern Mexico, near the United States border, six wildcat wells were completed, all of which gave little or no encouraging results, except Rancheria No. 3, near Camargo, which is a fair-sized gas well. Four wildcats were drilled just northeast of the Northern fields (heavy-oil district), all of which were failures. A deep test was completed a short distance southeast of the Golden Lane (South fields) in Palo Blanco, which encountered small production not sufficient to exploit. On the Isthmus of Tehuantepec a wildcat well was completed for an estimated initial production of 2000 bbl. daily, a short distance south of the old Jalapa field, which was perhaps the most important new development of the year. Four other wildcats drilled in the Isthmus district resulted in failures. NICKEL is used as an alloying element in several complex commercial aluminum alloys, among which are found some very interesting proper-ties, such as relatively high strength at elevated temperatures, relatively low coefficient of expansion, the absence of permanent growth, ability to take a good polish, and a bright, pleasing as-cast surface. For that reason the aluminum-nickel system was included in the list of binary aluminum systems that are being studied as a preparation for the investigation of more complex commercial alloys. This paper is the fifteenth of a series from the Research Laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America reporting the results of investiga-tions of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys of high purity. The aluminum-nickel equilibrium diagram from 0 to 18 per cent nickel was determined, using the purest material available.

ONE phase of the treatment in sulphide flotation, covered generally in a review of pulp pretreat-ment by S. A. Falconer,' is the matter of grinding mills as conditioners, a subject on which further study could be advantageous. Flotation with few exceptions is preceded by grinding, and the grinding and flotation capacity required for the treatment of an ore is based generally on laboratory or pilot mill tests. The results of such tests, it then is assumed, will be duplicated in practice, and a flowsheet is prepared on that basis. This assumption may be too broad, because in several instances laboratory flotation tests made on massive sulphide copper ores could not be duplicated in plant operation without the introduction of an aeration step, either in closed circuit with the grind-inging mills, or between grinding and flotation.~' " The differences between laboratory and plant grinding practice are considerable, and may be summarized as follows: 1—In the laboratory a relatively fine charge is ground in a batch mill. In the plant, the feed, usually considerably coarser than the ore tested in the laboratory, enters the grinding mill continuously and more often than not, oversize material in the mill discharge is retained in the grinding circuit by a classifier until the required degree of reduction has been effected. 2—The rate of grinding in the laboratory is slower than in plant practice. 3—The percentage of volume occupied by the pulp in a laboratory mill rarely approaches that of a continuous overflow type mill. This does not apply if the comparison is made with grate type mills, but in that case an even wider discrepancy between the relative rates of laboratory and mill grinding almost invariably exists. The present trend in grinding is toward larger mills to reduce the number of operating units. This accentuates the foregoing differences. It is believed that the trend toward larger mills is sound, but that when large mills are used, metallurgists should check their flotation circuits carefully to determine whether laboratory tests are being reproduced in

The calculation of metallurgical balances for precious metals is very dependent on a precise mineralogical understanding of the distribution of each element. Determination whether the precious metals occur as dilute solid solutions in major minerals is not always easy because of the relatively high levels of detection (9200-500 ppm) of the precious metals by the most common methods of in-situ analysis (e.g. electron microprobe). Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis of sulfides from Izok Lake, N.W.T., Canada and from the Hilton mine, Mount Isa, Australia with a proton beam (proton microprobe) confirms solid solution of Ag in chalcopyrite from both deposits. In addition, chalcopyrite and sphalerite from Izok Lake both contain indium.

The material presented in this paper is an abstract of a thesis submitted by the writer to the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as part requirement for the degree of Master of Science. The investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. H. 0. Hofman, and it was conducted, under his direction, in the laboratories of the Mining Department of the Institute. The purpose of the work was, first, to study some of the reactions that have been considered as a part of the mechanism of the chloridiz-ing roast, and second, to study the conditions under which nickel oxide and copper oxide may be chloridized. While the production of chlorine gas by various reactions during the chloridizing roast may not be primarily useful in the chloridation of metal oxides and compounds, it nevertheless serves a useful purpose in preventing the dissociation and decomposition of chlorides once they have been formed; for example, the dissociation of cupric chloride into cuprous chloride and chlorine. Therefore it was thought that a study of some chlorine-producing reactions would prove of interest, and the first series of experiments dealt with this phase of the subject. he object of the latter part of the work was to show the possibility of treating heavy sulphide ores, such as those of Sudbury, Ontario, containing much iron and small amounts of copper and nickel, by chloridizing and removing the copper, leaving an iron-nickel oxide product suitable for smelting in the blast furnace for nickel-bearing pig iron. The chloridizing of the copper would, of course, be preceded by a roast for the removal of sulphur, the sulphur oxides being available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, if under the local conditions this product would be of commercial value. A numerical study of the vulnerability of unlined tunnels in jointed rock has been performed with the STEALTH computer program, using the CAVS model for jointed rock. CAVS, for Cracking And Void Strain, is a constitutive model that can simulate the initiation/propagation of fractures and the slip along fracture planes in a jointed rock mass. The CAVS model is unique because it represents a spatially oriented approach to rock failure, rather than the traditional invariant formulation, and because the CAVS submodels for slip friction and slip-induced dilatancy are used to represent the weakening influence of joints, rather than applying ad hoc modifications to the elastic moduli of the host rock. The CAVS model, as embedded in the STEALTH computer program, has performed numerical simulations of tunnel collapse at high overstress levels. These calculations show that the ultimate strength of the tunnel depends strongly on the joint properties, and that the results of the calculations are in qualitative agreement with the observed data for collapse of a tunnel in tuff.

Transition in the underground coal industry, begun with the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, should be completed midway in the 1972-80 period. Surprisingly, many of the far reaching effects of this act have been, for the most part, beneficial to the industry from the standpoint of health, safety and basic operating standards. Production has dwindled, but the next few years will see production declines level out. Average declines of approximately 27% have been recorded since passage of the 1969 act, with costs increasing an average of $1.50 per ton throughout the industry. Nationwide averages presently are in the range of 14 tons per man-shift, and by 1980 this may be further reduced to a 10-ton per man-shift average for the industry. But in spite of the many temporary set-backs affecting the industry, the marketing opportunities are clearly visible. Due primarily to the energy squeeze facing the U.S. over the near term, the 'underground coal operator is and will be enjoying unusual leverage in selling his product.

THE tendency of the oxides of such metals as aluminum, zinc, chromium, and calcium to form compounds at high temperatures with iron oxide is well established by past investigation. Data of this reaction, as developed in laboratory research, have been contributed by Burleigh, Hofman, and Wells, in America, and by many others abroad. A partial bibliography of the subject is appended. From these authorities we learn that the ferric oxide here has the function of an acid, giving in the case of ZnO a zinc ferrite, with a normal composition of ZnOFe2O3. This formation of zinc ferrite particularly affects the success of such processes as leaching or magnetic separation, and thus becomes practically important to the metallurgist. But the meager existing data do not entirely agree; and quantitative results from muffle-practice are conspicuously absent. Furthermore, it being of some general importance to the zinc smelter in both roasting and reduction, the following few notes of operations on a commercial scale are contributed

Pneumatic stowing is commonly employed in European coal mines, but is not used in the United States. This paper reports a study conducted to analyze the conditions under which pneumatic stowing might be advantageously used and the techniques and costs involved in order to effect this. Although stowing may reduce the subsidence in a mining area, this does not entirely eliminate the surface damage. Besides, the cost of stowing will run about $1.50 to $3 per ton of coal mined not including the cost of fill material, if it has to be bought and transported to the mine. Stowing my, however, be economically viable under special circumstances such as in thick, steep, or contiguous seams.

BLISTER formation on wrought aluminum products has been a matter of concern to aluminum fabricators for many years. The fact that blisters make their appearance during the final stages of fabrication means that much time and effort have been expended before it is evident that the material must be scrapped. This and the loss of production are ample reasons for embarking on a research program to find out more about blistering and possible methods of control. Many excellent papers on this subject have appeared in the technical literature in the last few years. In one of the more recent papers, Kostronl gives a fairly complete review of the problem of gas in aluminum and blistering in general. From the work of the various investigators, a general mechanism for the formation of blisters has evolved and may be summarized briefly as follows: Hydrogen gas is usually present in the cast ingot, in the atomic or ionic state, in excess of the solid solubility. At room temperature the gas atoms are relatively immobile, but at elevated temperatures they become mobile and diffuse to free surfaces where they associate to form molecules. If these free surfaces are discontinuities within the ingot then the associated gas molecules collect and build up considerable pressure until equilibrium is reached with the dissolved gas around the discontinuity. Since the solubility of the gas is proportional to the square root of the partial pressure it is evident that large pressures may be built up at the discontinuities. When the metal is rolled to sheet the pressure of the gas in these, discontinuities is sufficient to deform the surface of the sheet and form a blister, particularly when the strength of the material is reduced during the annealing. Although the mechanism of the formation of blisters was fairly well known, the actual impor- tance of the individual roles played by the gas and the discontinuities was not so well established that positive methods for control of blistering were at hand. It was the object of the investigation to learn more about the nature of the discontinuities giving rise to blistering and to develop methods of control. The investigation was carried out in three stages as follows: a) A study of the more commonly used methods of removing hydrogen from aluminum, such as fluxing and holding, and their effects on blistering. b) Location of the discontinuities giving rise to blistering. c) A study, by indirect methods, of the movement of gas in the metal and its effect on blistering, and the development of methods of blister control during fabrication. Removing Gas and Reducing Blistering by Fluxing or Holding-—The work of removing gas and reducing blistering by fluxing or holding was carried out on metal of Alcan 2s (1100) composition with an artificially high gas content. The high gas content was obtained by introducing water into the melt prior to casting; the water reacted with the aluminum forming A12O3 and hydrogen. The procedure was to raise the gas content by introducing water into an aluminum melt and using half the melt to cast one ingot immediately. The remaining metal was treated again with water to make up for the reduction in gas content during holding, while the first ingot was being cast, and then given a fluxing or holding treatment and cast into an ingot. Samples for gas determination were cast from the molten metal before and after the gassing operation; before, after, and during fluxing, and while casting. Samples were also cut from sections of the ingots. Gas determinations were made on these samples using the well known vacuum fusion technique. All ingots were hot rolled at 500°C to 0.250-in. slab which, in turn, was cold rolled to 0.040 in. sheet. THE past year has witnessed no radical changes in methods for the reduction and refining of copper. The Carson litigation was finally brought to a close ant1 the copper smelter is again free to introduce charge into his reverberatory furnaces in whatever manner suits him best. This litigation naturally led to much experimentation with various methods of charging and with various types of bath. In some cases the charge was introduced more or less centrally on a relatively dry hearth and in other cases into a bath of greater or less depth. The results of these furnaces were meticulously compared with the results obtained in side-charger furnaces, and it was apparent that it made little, if any difference how a given furnace \\.as charged so long as care was taken that there was always something in the furnace for the flames to work on. So long as this requirement was complied with, consumption of fuel per ton of charge smelted and tonnage smelted per furnace day remained substantially the same regardless of the method of charging or the depth of bath employed. In some instances the center-charged deep-bath furnaces gave slightly better results than the side-charged particularly with respect to copper losses. THE extension of metallurgical control of steelmaking processes has always made it desirable to have some quick method for determining the oxygen content of molten steel. To meet the practical demands of the steel industry, this method must also be simple enough so that the sampling can be done by the regular furnace crew. This requirement was kept in mind continually in the work to be described. An oxygen value is required for proper control, whether it be of a rimming steel or of a fully killed steel. However, two factors have discouraged the development of such direct methods: I. The reaction C + FeO -+ Fe + CO is rapid enough to make the correct sampling of the bath a difficult problem. The most generally accepted means of circumventing this difficulty have been the aluminum-killed bomb test of McCutcheon and Rautio1 and the aluminum-killed spoon test of Herty.2 The theory of these tests is that all of the oxygen in the iron is converted to A1203, which can then be determined by chemical methods. Even when simplified so that the analysis is made by a measurement of turbidity, this method is too slow to be used in routine control. Furthermore, the results obtained have never been entirely satisfactory, and some of the reasons for this will be discussed later in this paper. 2. The ordinary chemical methods of analysis for oxygen in steel are not reliable. The only analysis that seems to possess sufficient dependability to be of value is vacuum fusion,3 and the apparatus and technique developed for this have been too complex and slow for routine work. INDIRECT METHODS Indirect methods of estimating the oxygen have been resorted to in mill practice. Generally these depend upon the chemical equilibria involved. The oxygen in the bath is related to other components in the slag or metal that can be analyzed more readily. These methods have many difficulties in common. Steelmaking processes involve a complicated set of interrelated reactions, all of which tend to approach equilibrium at varying rates. The degree to which any particular equilibrium is approached, is not , well established. Moreover, a proper use of theoretical equilibrium constants requires a more extensive knowledge of the activities of the reactants than we now have. This is well illustrated by the irregularities observed when trying to determine the oxygen in the metal by its ratio to the iron oxide in the slag. Equilibrium relations may be used more readily if they are evaluated by plant experience, but the extent of approach to equilibrium remains an undetermined variable and lack of an entirely satisfactory means of determining oxygen for the calibration is felt keenly. For example, the statistical analysis of the relation between carbon and oxygen4 5 illustrates that even in a single plant wide variations exist under normal conditions of operation. The great activity with which the oil resources of the northern Cantons of the State of Veracruz have been developed has largely resulted from the great success obtained by the important explorations carried out since 1902 in the Ebano district in the North, and several years later near Tuxpam, in the South. It must not be thought that these successes were quickly obtained, since the preliminary studies by good experts, the acquisition of what were thought to be the most promising coast lands, the extensive clearing thereof, and finally the number of unsuccessful drillings at great depth, signified an original outlay of some tens of millions of dollars before finding commercial oil. The discovery of oil in industrial quantities at Cerro de la Pez, Ebano district, and the famous Dos Bocas gusher some years later, which was burned, once and for all made famous the Veracruz coast, where today is concentrated the Mexican output of mineral oil. In 1917, this production was nearly 61,000,000 bbl. It is well known that this output represents only a fraction of what the wells in actual production can furnish, because with adequate means of transportation and storage, the present extraction could be somewhat over 300,000,000 bbl. a year. These enormous potential oil resources of the Veracruz coast proceed from a relatively small number of wells, scattered over a few oil fields, separated from each other by large unexplored areas, wherein may be found other favorable fields which, in time, will undoubtedly become just as great centers of oil production. Experts who know our Gulf Coast believe that lands with commercial oil resources lie not only between the Pgnuco and Tuxpan Rivers, but that indications are that the oil zone of Mexico, with more or less interruption, takes in the coast zone from Northern Tamaulipas to the foot of the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, and the banks of the Usumacinta River. This generalization is not merely the outcome of optimism, but is the result of the persistency with which one finds, throughout this Gulf Coast, the most usual characteristics upon which we depend for recognizing oil-bearing lands.

A WIDE variety of metalliferous deposits in Peru shows a close and consistent relationship to intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. This relation- ship furnishes a clue to the composition of ore-bearing fluids and to the timing in separation of these fluids from differentiation magma. Conclusions presented here are based on ten years' study of a large number of metalliferous deposits in Peru. The most important of these areas are shown in Fig. 1.

THE carbon-oxygen reaction without doubt is the basic reaction in steelmaking. It is important on several counts: In the first place, carbon is the element that distinguishes steel from iron. It is the principal element controlling properties, and its control is of prime concern. Although the principal objective of the carbon-oxygen reaction is to oxidize excess carbon, the accompanying boil should not be underrated. The mechanical agitation, stirring, and mixing resulting from the boil are so useful in the distribution of heat and in promoting uniformity of composition in the bath that, were it not a natural accompaniment of the carbon-oxygen reaction, it is probable that something would have to be invented to replace it. The open-hearth operation, for example,, with the bath heated from above by radiation, would be impracticable without the carbon boil. The electric-arc furnace is somewhat less dependent on it, but every melter knows how much easier it is to gain temperature with minimum damage to refractories during the boil than with a dead bath. The motor action of the induced current of the induction furnace makes the carbon boil unnecessary but even there a severe oxidation has been found useful in giving greater freedom from porosity in certain steels. The quantitative aspects of the carbon-oxygen reaction have been given considerable attention by a large number of investigators, and the principles of physical chemistry have played an important part in these studies. Physical chemistry is the science of the mechanics and mathematics of chemical reactions. It is possible to study the mechanisms of reactions in a qualitative manner without reference to mathematics and thus obtain valuable concepts as to the manner in which the wheels go around. When it is desired to express quantitative relations in these reactions, however, resort to mathematics is not only convenient but necessary. Mathematics may also be regarded as the shorthand language of physical chemistry. A basic relation whose description requires numerous words may be expressed very simply by a mathematical formula or equation. A good example of this is the equilibrium constant for a chemical reaction. Expressed verbally, it is: When a chemical reaction has reached a condition of equilibrium, the product of the concentration of the reacting substances on one side of the equation, divided by the product of the concentration of the reacting substances on the other side, gives a quotient that is a constant at constant temperature. For the carbon-oxygen reaction C + 0 [=] CO this is expressed simply as [ ] where K (from the German Konstant) is the equilibrium constant for the reaction. Although mathematics is such a necessary and useful tool, it is also a potential pitfall. Mathematics in itself is an abstract science, which is not inhibited by consideration of mechanisms or materials.

The abnormal conductivity found in shaly reservoir rocks containing an electrolyte is shown to be a consequence of the electrical double layer in the solution adjacent to charged clay surfaces. This increased conductivity results from a higher concentration of ions in the double layer than in the solution in equilibrium with the double layer. It is shown that the magnitude of the increased conductivity of a shaly reservoir material is influenced by the concentration and type of ions in the equilibrium solution as well as by the colloidal nature of the rock. INTRODUCTION An important factor in the quantitative interpretation of the electric log is the resistivity factor of reservoir rock. The resistivity factor is defined as the resistivity of the rock when completely saturated with an electrolyte divided by the resistivity of the electrolyte itself.' In the normal case, the resistivity factor for a particular rock sample is independent of the resistivity of the electrolyte and reflects the pore geometry of the rock.' In 1949. Patnode and Wyllie' showed that in some cases the resistivity factor is not constant, but instead varies with the resistivity of the electrolytic solution. It was shown that clean sands behave normally—i.e., that the resistivity factor does not vary with resistivity of the electrolyte — but that sands con- taining shale and clay may exhibit abnormally low resistivity factors when the solution used to saturate them is of fairly high resistivity. At low resistivities of the electrolyte, the resistivity factor for a shaly sand appeared to approach a normal behavior. It is evident that the resistivity factor of a shaly sand is dependent upon factors other than pore geometry when the solution used to saturate it is of high resistivity. Patnode and Wyllie, and later de Witte,' assumed that the conductivity of a shaly sand saturated with an electrolyte could be represented as the sum of two quantities. One of these was assumed, in effect, to be the conductivity which would be expected if the sample were a clean sand. and the other was assumed to be a conductivity inherent in the sample itself. The latter was supposed to be constant for a given rock sample regardless of the solution used to saturate it. The source of this added conductivity was ascribed to "conductive solids." In actual practice: the effect of the abnormal behavior of shaly sands is of minor importance except when the resistivity of a formation such as a sand is high. Thus the effect is more important when the sand is saturated with a dilute brine than when it contains a more concentrated electrolyte. The effect is also more important when the sample contains oil or gas than when it contains only saline water. Recently it has been suggested that the porosity of a stratum may be estimated from the electric log by use of the resistivity of the invaded zone." This is the zone flushed with the filtrate from mud used in drilling the well. which is ordinarily very dilute brine. When the method is applied to shaly sands, the effect of abnormal conductivity becomes of importance. Of this amount, the Tropical Oil Co. produced 21;426,492 bbl., including 268,586 bbl. of petroleum condensate, and the Cololmbian Petroleum Co. produced 4,181,484 bbl. from its Barco property. The wildcatting program of different companies in the Magdalena Valley that was initiated during the previous year was continued but with results that were decidedly disappointing. Ten wells were drilled in the Magdalena Valley between the approximate latitudes of Puerto Wilches and Puerto Berrio and nine of these were dry; the tenth was a small producer of no commercial importance. The prospects of finding new fields in the Magdalena Valley thus received a serious setback, since some of the tests drilled were on well developed surface structures. The prospects of the Valley, however, have by no means been exhausted and drilling operations are being continued on other prospects. One additional wildcat was drilled outside the Magdalena Valley on the Colombian Petroleum Company's Barco Concession, which brought to 11 the total number of wildcats drilled in Colom-bia during the year. THE loading of bituminous coal mechan¬ically was recognized about the year 1900, but during the following 28 years less than 5 per cent of the bituminous pro¬duction in the United States was loaded by mechanical means. During the past i6 years, however, the usage of some form of mechanical loader has had a very rapid and accelerated growth, until at present production of bituminous coal by mechanical means has reached an all¬time high of approximately 46 per cent, and is still increasing. This rapid growth in the use of the mechanical loader has been supplemented by an increase in mechanical cleaning. The importance of mechanical cleaning of coal was recognized many years before the mechanical loader was introduced, because of the impossibility of cleaning manually the sizes below 2 in., and the increasing competition from other fuels. Utilization of mechanical loaders without mechanical cleaning on the surface for at least one or more sizes is the exception, rather than the rule. One exception is a mine that employs caterpillar-mounted mobile loaders exclusively, and mines the entire seam without any selectivity, and yet loads and ships six grades of coal of the very highest quality without mechanical cleaning. Such a fortunate situation can exist only where mining conditions are ideal, where top and bottom are exceptional and there are no impurity partings, and where there is loader height. The conversion from hand loading to mechanical loading has definitely intro¬duced many problems in the preparation plant of yesterday and in the modern streamline plant as well. Many of these problems have been solved by good, sound, conscientious initiative on the part of the plant personnel, with minor expendi¬tures; the solution taking the pattern of rearranging and improving the equipment at hand. Other problems have caused, and are causing, considerable concern and difficulty. LARGE IMPURITIES The removal of large quantities of large impurities from the lump coal, and their handling and disposal, is definitely a troublesome and costly problem. The cost of manually removing the impurities from the picking table alone, based on the actual recovered lump coal, can reach a cost of 42 cents per ton or more. In the design of future plants it would be wise to give this phase of preparation considerably more time and thought, particularly if the seam of coal contains one or more heavy partings and the mining procedure is all seam. This same caution applies to seams that may not contain heavy partings but have poor and heavy draw-slate top, which falls with the coal during the mining cycle. One of the more recent of the modern preparation plants has answered this problem by installing a rock crusher under the picking table in such a manner that the impurities can be diverted by gravity directly to the crusher. VARIATIONS in the composition of the liquid phase of natural reservoirs which are continuous through significant ranges in elevation have been noted by petroleum technologists. In general, there is a greater gas-oil ratio and the gravity of the oil is higher in production from the upper parts of the formation. In the present paper the possible changes in composition with elevation which would result from the attainment of thermodynamic equilibrium in a uniform gravitational field have been evaluated for a naturally occurring hydrocarbon liquid, a binary hydro-carbon liquid phase and a binary hydrocarbon gas. The results indicate a progressive decrease in the mole fraction of the components from methane through the butanes with increasing depth, accompanied by a corresponding increase in the amount of the heavier components making up the system. The magnitude of these variations is perhaps insufficient to explain completely the variations in the properties of the liquid phase that are encountered at various elevations within a particular producing horizon. However, the changes are significant and the treatment presents an example of the application of thermodynamic data to the evaluation of the properties of hydrocarbon fluids under the conditions approaching those encountered in natural reservoirs.
