ENGIE, the current owner and operator of the Hazelwood Open Cut coalmine, are in the process of rehabilitating the mine site in preparation for mine closure. Bucket wheel excavators (dredgers) used during coal mining operations are in the process of being demolished, which involves the controlled felling of dredger components using explosives. With the mine located in close proximity to the Morwell township and other critical public infrastructure, it is crucial that the use of explosives and the possible implications for mine stability is well understood. The felling of Large Mining Equipment (LME) will apply an impact load immediately to the underlying coal benches with the adjacent coal batters potentially at risk also of adverse slope stability impacts. This paper presents the 3D stability modelling methods employed to successfully assess the potentially adverse stability implications associated with LME collapse.

For the sampling of particulate materials in mineral exploration and mining, the fundamental sampling error (FSE) introduced by Gy is a measure of the constitutional heterogeneity of the sample lot and is expressed as the relative standard deviation of subsample grades of a particular mass. The FSE is presently regarded as an important indicator of quality for samples used in resource estimation. Constitutional heterogeneity describes an ideal state of heterogeneity with respect to all constituents of the lot such that the fundamental error among subsamples of a particular mass is minimised.In this paper, the term ‘sampling precision’ used in relation to mineral resource sampling usually refers to a statistic based on the assay results drawn from pairs of separate subsample splits of multiple sample lots. The pairs of splits are extracted after the lots have been prepared by crushing and pulverising to meet specified criteria of grain size and subsample mass. There is presently no generally accepted method of calculating the ‘sampling precision’ from such paired data but some form of the relative standard deviation that is consistent with definition of the FSE is preferred here. The work of Thompson and Howarth in the 1970s on geochemical analytical precision, which has been subjected to extensive examination and criticism by Stanley and Lawie (2007), and that of Francois-Bongarçon since the 1990s forms the background to the discussion in the paper.A significant aspect of the application of Gy’s sampling theory to sampling in gold deposits is the requirement that the fundamental error be maintained at less than ±20 per cent. The most important reason for this is to ensure that the effects of other sampling errors such as the grouping and segregation, and increment delimitation which can cause local and global biases in sampling are kept as small as possible. This paper is focused mainly on the quality of sampling in gold deposits and looks at an alternative to the use of a constant sampling precision applied to a collection of lots with varying average grade. A theoretical model for the FSE based on duplicate sampling is presented and the simulated results of the model are compared to practical outcomes of real duplicate pairs drawn from multiple sample lots. The goal of the work is to present a more informative analysis of duplicate sample data from multiple lots which may allow a more informed view of the potential for bias generating errors during sample preparation and processing.

A major tool in the search for petroleum is reflection seismic mapping. The period which has seen most of the exploration in Victoria is also one which has seen major advances in this technology, from 1963 try present day. Seismic mapping can be divided into three interlinked areas - acquisition, processing, and interpretation. In acquisition the major changes have been from an explosive energy source in 1963 to gas exploders in 1968 and airguns in 1970. The number of recording channels has increased from 24 to 192, with digital recording introduced in 1966, and floating point recording in 1976.

"One of the contributing factors to the extreme cost escalation in the first decade of the 21st century was the increase in the amount and cost of engineering work that went into studies and projects. Various reasons for this were identified, including unsatisfactory productivity due to a shortage of experienced/qualified engineers, the increased complexity and infrastructure requirements of many projects due to location, metallurgy that is more challenging and increasing environmental and social requirements. These conditions often led to unsatisfactory project results in terms of cost and schedule blowouts and created a loss of confidence – both internally and externally – in the industry’s ability to complete projects on time and on budget.Technical fundamentals aside, the experience and effectiveness of project teams has had, and continues to have, a major impact on project cost, schedule and ramp-up to nameplate capacity and operating parameters. There are unfortunately too many examples of where project teams have not been as effective as they could or should have been, all to the ultimate detriment of the project.Using the authors’ extensive experience on both owner’s and engineer’s teams, this paper discusses some of the main reasons for suboptimal team, and hence project, performance and offers thoughts on how best to build and maintain project teams. The analysis and conclusions drawn are built around the Tuckman model of group development known as ‘forming-storming-norming-performing’, which was first proposed some 50 years ago. Assessing the uncertainty and risk in mineral resource estimation is required for best practice and is implied by the public reporting codes in the categorisation of mineral resources and reserves. One industry best practice is quantifying the risk on future production for a given period, which can be done using two geostatistical approaches: conditional simulation and drill hole spacing studies based on estimation variances. Conditional simulation can provide a more complete and flexible answer to the problem, but it takes a fair amount of time to complete. Drill hole spacing studies are simpler, faster and can provide reasonable assessments of mineral resource uncertainty.This paper is a presentation of the principles, theory and practice of drill hole spacing studies. Various types of risk assessment are considered. Difficulties encountered in practice are discussed, and solutions are proposed. The important parameters impacting the results are reviewed. This paper discusses pore pressures in the embankments of tailings dams by comparing real world data with common design assumptions. Assessment of pore pressures has implications on material behaviour interpretation from CPT investigations and, therefore, on the design. For example, the assumption of hydrostatic pressure is conservative for limit equilibrium stability analyses but may be un-conservative in assessing the potential for contractive behaviour and strength loss during shearing. This paper presents some real world data, the investigation methods to determine the pore pressures, and subsequent interpretation of CPT data and material parameters such as the state parameter. It also examines the design implications of assuming a hydrostatic pressure distribution, by comparing results from that assumption with those obtained using the real pore pressures.CITATION:Johns, D and Murray, L, 2018. Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you, on behalf of the Council and Administration, to this University and extend to you our very best wishes for a most successful and stimulating symposium. We as a College of the University of N.S.W. were always proud of the excellent support we received from your Institute members and the close association that existed between our organisations. Now we have matured into the University of Wollongong and have to stand on our own feet, we will need all the support we can get from such bodies as yours to ensure that we are not only producing graduates but are also playing a vital role in the community. Although there is no planning for a school of Mining Engineering in the near future, we do look forward to this being a viable proposition eventually and we will then be able to offer to your Institute wider facilities for your activities and ones which will embrace both the Mining and Metallurgy phases. The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

By 2045, carbon-neutral mines will be economically producing products that are vital for the world’s transition to renewable energy. After overcoming significant technical challenges (and the investment of significant capital), leaders have successfully eliminated the use of diesel and other fossil fuels by introducing a wide range of new decarbonisation technologies. These leaders will be reaping the benefits of lower production costs (resulting from elimination of diesel), stable and predictable operations, and easier access to capital for their future projects. This paper describes a future scenario of how a net zero carbon and zero-entry mine could operate by taking maximum advantage of technologies in development or already proven in other industries. Some miners have been unsuccessful in their efforts to reach decarbonisation targets. Instead, they have been forced to close or offload their assets to be acquired by operators with better sustainability credentials, or, in some cases, to indigenous or community-based enterprises with vested interest in making operations viable and sustainable. Regardless of ownership structure, all successful mining operations will have fostered strong and positive community relations that bring education, health, security and economic development opportunities to the communities while respecting their traditions, land-uses and culture. As shallow, easy to mine deposits have become scarce, the majority of new mines are underground. Advancements in electric underground technology and the feasibility of ‘zero entry mining’ (with no personnel in active mining zones) has made it increasingly possible to economically operate underground mines, even at shallow depths. The newest mines have a near zero footprint on the surface, produce no harmful by-products, and are employing in-place or in situ methods of extraction that are efficient and low impact. Surface land-uses, such as agriculture and renewable energy generation, continue in the immediate vicinity of the mine, with no significant ground disturbance, community impact or environmental footprint.

The purpose of filtration in a gold reco- very plant is to separate the gold bearing liquid from the solids in the slurry. Some of the gold is inevitably lost due to incomplete separation. An investigation recently completed by the authors has brought to light a method of reducing such losses. In this investigation, the filtration pro- cess was represented by a steady-state mathema- tical model which took account of 14 indepen- dent variables and three parameters. One of the filters in the plant at West Driefontein Gold Mine in South Africa was isolated from the rest and fully instrumented. A computerized data acquisition system was installed close to the filter, and the data obtained from it served to test the model. Using the model together with an optimizing program, the optimum operating point for the filter as a function of throughput was found, and a control strategy developed to minimize the total gold losses in the filter plant.

Improving the safety culture and performance of any operation is a fundamental goal of every mine operator. Methods of implementing, or changing a culture have developed from the early methods of operant conditioning, for example rewarding crews for achieving nominated safety milestones i.e. 3 months Lost Time Injury (LTI) free through to the current model of engaging a workforce through education and empowerment. As a large scale and mature operation with multiple contractors, Telfer has been exposed to numerous programs throughout its history. This has provided the opportunity to build on and complement these systems by integrating key elements from each. SAFE 360° is a new approach developed to engage the workforce in a holistic approach to encourage positive behaviours across all facets of an individual’s life which results in a focus on situational awareness at all times, rather than being workplace specific. It is based on three key modules: • Emotional Intelligence • Mindfulness • Situational Awareness Each module has a series of modules that help enhance the individual’s sense of self, leading to an ability to self-reflect and self-manage whilst empowering them with the moral courage to challenge their peers to raise standards. Since commencing this SAFE 360° behavioural safety risk management journey in November 2017, we have witnessed a change in the way our workforce engages with each other, their workplace and with management. There has been an increase in hazard perception, identification and ownership of issues, and we have seen a significant decrease in site TRIFR rate from 13.7 to 5.7 (as of April 2019). This paper will provide an overview of the program, how it has been implemented, case studies to demonstrate outcomes and KPIs used to measure effectiveness.

The treatment of mixed lead carbonate and lead sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa presents a problem which is unique ,in the lead smelting world; a problem whose solution is far from simple, and is not yet complete. Two years of study under plant conditions have definitely proved, however, that a most satisfactory sinter can be made in a single-pass roast.The object of this paper is to present a brief record of the development of the single-pass roast and a resume of current practice in the smelting plant. The sintering operation is discussed in greater detail, as it is upon this phase of the work that every item in the smelter operating programme depends.The smelter, to-day, presents a very much simplified layout, equipped for economical, straightforward operation, requiring, however, very careful and constant supervision, due to the extreme delicacy of the sintering operation and to the rapid and wide variati9n in the nature of the concentrates which are to be handled.

From time to time failures occur in structures made of lead, and the failure may be due to corrosion involving a definite thinning of the lead sheet, or it may be of such a nature that cracks develop and the lead appears to disintegrate. The idea of lead cracking will at once suggest something abnormal, for common experience shows that this metal is very ductile and will withstand considerable bending without showing any sign of fracture. Cracking, on the other hand, is usually associated with brittleness.Fig. 1 is a natural-size photograph of a cracked sheet of lead. Prior to photographing, the sheet was etched byimmersion in a solution of ammonium molybdate. Several characteristics of this crack will be evident. First of all it is distinctly a zigzag crack, and secondly it passes between, rather than through, certain well-defined areas which appear bright in the photograph. This is particularly noticeable at the lower end where the crack appears to terminate.

The development of present methods of pillar extraction has evolved from the very earliest of hand mining operations which were limited in scope by venti- lation and transport considerations. Conservation and safety considerations also have led to the current shortwall operations with conventional equipment and powered supports. The shortwall methods have had significant effects on safety, costs, con- servation, flexibility, and other aspects of pillar extraction. The present stage falls short of the ideal but is some guide to prediction in what direction may lie the ideal methods for the future.

The philosophical context of many activities in mine geology can be an important lever in adding value to operations. For mine geologists (including resource and grade control geologists) we argue that the tasks of problem formulation, observation and data collection, interpretation and modelling invoke various philosophical considerations whether the practitioner is aware of them or not.Constructing testable models to explain reality is the definitive aspect of any activity claiming to be ‘scientific’. A primary goal of mining geology is to build models that accurately predict reality to an acceptable degree and these include litho-structural, stratigraphic, grade control, resource or reconciliation models. What’s more, in mine geology we are often able collect additional drill samples or access new underground openings, for example, that can provide relatively rapid feedback on how predictive, and therefore useful, our models are. In this paper, we describe the key philosophical frameworks proposed for conducting scientific investigations, including falsification, the method of multiple working hypotheses and structural concepts of scientific theory. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are discussed and an attempt is made to relate them to activities undertaken by mine geologists. Common perceptions of what constitutes the scientific method have been dominated by how scientists do experimental physics and chemistry in particular. There are very important differences in the types of problem confronted in these experimental sciences compared to the ‘historical sciences’, such as geology, where the processes studied are unique and only evidential traces of past events are available. The philosophical implications of attempting to validate numerical geological models, such as resource estimates are also briefly considered.Some practical conclusions are drawn about how mine geology activities can be better implemented if practitioners are cognisant of the importance of philosophical considerations when attempting to gain new knowledge through a scientific investigation. We believe that the implications for creating additional value to a project or operation can be very significant when geology is applied by a practitioner with an understanding of the philosophical basis of the activities we think of as constituting a scientific investigation.Remember that all models are wrong; the practical question is how wrong do they have to be to not be useful? (Box and Draper, 1987, 74 p).The demand that theories be highly falsifiable has the attractive consequence that theories should be clearly stated and precise. If a theory is so vaguely stated that it is not exactly clear what it is claiming, then when tested by observation or experiment it can always be interpreted so as to be consistent with the results of the test. (Chalmers, 1999, 67 p).

The introduction of Progressive Closure and Rehabilitation Plans (PCRPs) in Queensland from 2019 places greater importance on planning and implementation of mine rehabilitation activities. The progress and outcomes of progressive rehabilitation activities is monitored and reported upon to demonstrate success in achieving progress towards the approved post-mining landform, and to inform corrective action where required. The requirements of PCRPs place additional emphasis on mine sites to quantify the risks of successfully achieving planned outcomes. This is particularly challenging given mined-land rehabilitation is a complex process involving decisions on multiple inter-acting management interventions, climatic conditions and spatially variable site characteristics.

In reviewing recent developments in the process mineralogy of gold it is convenient to distinguish between visible (>0.1 pm) and invisible gold (1 - 2 pm in size in polished section; these can scan the surface of a polished section, identifying the gold minerals, recording co-ordinates of the grains for subsequent examination, and making measurements of areas and sizes of the grains. However, problems of sample reliresentivity in polished section mean that such data may not give good quantification of gold mineral proportions and liberation/locking characteristics and other methods are required for this (amalgamation, cyanidation, ultra-fine milling and cyanidation). Characterisation of invisible gold in bulk material (eg a sulphide concentrate) can be done by mineral separation, ultra-fine milling and cyanidation or by quantitative point analyses of a large number of mineral grains. Analytical methods include electron microprobe analysis (detection limit normally -200 ppm but -10 ppm by using special techniques), ion microprobe analysis (secondary ion mass spectrometry - SIMS; detection limit -0.2 ppm) or proton microprobe analysis (PIXE; detection limit

Conditional simulation (CS) has been extensively used in metal industry to assess uncertainty of geo metallurgical variables to build robust distributions around grade tonnages across different time horizons. Coal’s entry to nonlinear stochastic modelling is relatively new and this paper summarises the work done at BHP to enable its practical usage from production time frames to Life of Asset planning. CS in coal using Sequential Gaussian Simulation (SGS) is used to understand resource confidence around specific variables within pre-defined boundaries of spatially continuous domains for each coal seam. The variation between simulations for a given parameter reflects uncertainty. This paper demonstrates the use of CS to profile resource based upon agreed seam/parameter uncertainty thresholds which affect planning, forecasting, extraction and inform identification of key production risks and defining mitigation strategies. The end goal is to de-risk long-term plans by optimising infill data collection and improve stability in short-term planning through increased understanding of confidences locally rather than at global resource definition stages. The paper also briefly discusses the use of automated workflows and systems to minimise the time spent on the process to enable use in decision-making.
