In considering the organization of research, it is necessary to know just what research is, what objects are in mind when setting out to conduct research, and what are the functional units which are required to enable a coordinated effort in research to proceed.The dictionary defines research in the following terms: Laborious and patient search, as for truth, diligent inquiry or examination in seeking facts or principles; inquiry, scrutiny; to search or examine with continued care; to seek diligently; to search again; to examine anew.This is, of course, simply a formal definition, but the reference to "labour", "patience" and "diligence" should be noted.The following quotation from an answer to the question "What is Research?", published recently in a technical journal, puts some life into the formal definition:- Essentially, it (Research) is nothing but a state of mind a friendly, welcoming attitude toward change. Going out to look for a change instead of waiting for it to come. Research, for practical men, is an effort to do things better... The research state of mind can apply to anything: personal affairs or any kind of business, big or little. It is the problem-solving mind as contrasted with the let-well-enough-alone mind . . . It is the "to-morrow" mind instead of the "yesterday" mind. Note the statements that: Essentially, it (Research) is nothing but a state of mind, and the research state of mind can apply to anything.

Resources added to the global metal inventory through exploration over the past 15 years have been generally of poor quality (declining grades, recoveries and lack of acceptable financial return). Similarly, companies opting for an acquisitions-based strategy have had to pick from a group of poorer quality resources left from previous exploration booms, and will struggle to deliver this metal to market economically. Increasing difficulty in obtaining sufficient social and community acceptance of mining projects and potentially an energy-constrained future may exacerbate this problem, redefining what is considered ‘ore’. There will need to be more focus on deposit quality, defined as sustainable margin in the future business environment.Traditionally there has been a lack of translation of ‘mineralisation quality’ back to mineral project design and mineral exploration. This disconnect is due to two main factors: the first is technical – inherent deposit variability; and the second is organisational and socio-psychological –the mindset of explorers and project managers themselves.There are four elements to value realisation for a mineral deposit: (1) social licence to operate; (2) geological factors (depth, geometry, water and geotechnical, and geometallurgy – influenced by texture, mineralogy, chemistry and grades); (3) financial engineering (capex, opex, future commodity prices, future energy prices), and (4) operating factors (production rate, recovery, energy consumption). These elements are strongly interdependent, and geology underpins and drives linkages between them. A quality deposit addresses all of these elements and thus can be developed in a time frame that allows acceptable returns to the owners of the invested capital.Geological drivers of the above elements can be measured and mapped throughout a deposit. Moreover, when viewed in the context of mineral systems, a predictive understanding of the common causative processes of quality (despite deposit-scale variability) is emerging, and with it the ability to target quality of mineralisation, not just quantity of mineralisation.The second factor is a ‘heuristic software problem’. Current lines of education (and consequently organisational and professional structures) are discipline-based, producing ‘silos’ that do not speak each other’s language and work with different ‘mental models’. People who effectively recognise systemic links between these silos are called ‘boundary spanners’, of which we propose two distinct types: outside-insiders and inside-outsiders. Outside-insiders are people who are within a community, but recognise advances in outside fields and effectively integrate them into the community. Inside-outsiders start outside of a community, and successfully bring new ideas into it. Common traits in boundary spanners are: they seek exposure to (and embrace) key ideas that are outside of the framework of their own specialisation; they have high mental processing ability (MPA) – the ability to connect systems that are currently not perceived to be connected; and they introduce ideas from outside a field into a new context in a way that re-frames the field.The challenge is to identify and nurture potential boundary spanners that can build critical links, in particular between the (largely geoscientific) mineral exploration mindset and the (largely non-geoscientific) project development mindset. The Northern Beaches Storage Project (NBSP) is part of Sydney Water’s SewerFix™ Program to improve the wastewater system and protect public health and the environment. It was built by the SewerFix Wet Weather Alliance (the Alliance), a partnership between Sydney Water, RPS, MWH, Parsons Brinckerhoff and United Group Infrastructure.The project temporarily stores excess wastewater diverted from the Narrabeen Submain during wet weather. The project considered a below-ground storage facility, which involved constructing a deep tunnel from Brookvale to Fairlight, connecting into the Northside Storage Tunnel and a storage tank, which was subsequently adopted and constructed.The storage tank scheme included a pumping station and inlet and outlet pipes installed by microtunnelling. The storage tank site is in the Brookvale industrial area situated in an area of deep marine sediments overlying Hawkesbury Sandstone at about 30?m below ground. Microtunnelling for the inlet pipe was conducted from a 12?m deep jacking shaft. The jacking shaft and 14?m deep pumping station excavations were carried out from within secant pile earth retaining structures adjacent to existing buildings.Construction activities had the potential to cause settlement of the adjacent buildings. During excavation and microtunnelling the water ingress, adjacent groundwater level and settlement of the adjacent buildings were monitored. The monitoring data was assessed against an action plan, which modified construction activities as required to minimise the risk of damage to buildings from settlements caused by lowering of the groundwater table outside the excavations. The secant pile construction, excavation, microtunnelling and pumping station construction proceeded without incident or damage to adjacent buildings.This paper highlights that tunnel/underground options should be considered during options development, describes the original storage tunnel scheme and presents details of the successful microtunnelling and deep shaft construction adopted on the NBSP.CITATION:Taylor, N and Hewitt, P, 2014. The mining industry has focused a great deal of attention recently on the impact of blast movement on grade control. Although the problem of blast movement and its contribution to dilution and ore loss is well known, solutions to the problem are less than satisfactory. Perhaps the most recent innovation is the application of blast movement monitoring (BMM) devices to quantify blast movement. These devices emit an electronic signal and are planted at surveyed locations within the preblast material. Following the blast, their new locations are found using an electronic scanner. The magnitude and direction of the blast movement is given by the vectors between the pre- and post-blast BMM locations. However, it’s not clear how the BMM vector data can be best used to minimise dilution and ore loss. One common solution is to displace preblast dig line polygons by distances indicated by the BMM vectors. However, studies of BMM vectors show that blast movement not only displaces material laterally but also mixes material internally within the bench (Thornton, 2009a).This paper presents a method for modelling the post-blast muck pile that accounts for displacement and internal dilution using simulated annealing. The preblast ore control block model is re-blocked to 1?×?1?×?1?m sub-blocks. Each sub-block is displaced by simulated BMM vectors conditional to post-blast surface topography and blast initiation sequence data in addition to BMM vector data. The displaced sub-blocks are aggregated into new ore control model blocks whose grades are calculated from the contained sub-blocks. New dig lines are then designed on the post-blast muck pile model using the new ore control block model grades. Underground mining for gold began in Beaconsfield in 1877 and development of the Tasmania Mine saw the sinking of multiple shafts, including the Hart Shaft over the ensuing 35 years. The mine closed in 1914 at a depth of 455 m due to prevailing economics, eventually reopening in 1999. The modern mine closed in 2012 after extending the mine from a historical depth of 455 m to the exhaustion of the modern Ore Reserve at a depth of 1210 m. West Tamar Council took over the lease for the immediate area around the Hart Shaft as an extension of the adjacent museum. The Hart Shaft and above ground structures became a significant drawcard for visitors. Tasmania was affected by sustained wet weather during May, June and July of 2016 which caused severe flooding and significant Statewide damage. This uncharacteristically intense wet weather caused saturation of the ground surrounding the Hart Shaft. Eventual shaft failure was first identified in August 2016. The failure of the shaft occurred at approximately 50 m below surface and resulted in a plug of material completely blocking the shaft. Significant surface subsidence affecting the surface infrastructure ensued. Due to the unstable nature of the surrounding material, it was determined that addressing the failure above the blockage would not provide a permanent solution to prevent the continued flow of material into the shaft. Many options to stabilise the shaft were considered, however it was assessed that a concrete plug in the shaft in competent ground at a depth of 100 m below surface and well below the blockage, would provide the only long-term solution. Man-entry was considered unsafe. The solution to access ultimately entailed filling the entire shaft with granular fill up to 100 m depth to act as formwork for a concrete plug. The rising mains at 400 mm and 250 mm diameter, which remained in place in the shaft, provided the avenue for placing the fill and ultimately, the concrete plug. Once the plug was in place the remainder of the shaft up to the underside of the blockage and over the top of the blockage to the surface was successfully filled with a combination of more granular fill and flowable cement stabilised sand. Crushing Plant Process Optimisation Design of processes in order to find the most efficient solution to a specific task is a difficult problem. Often the number of solutions are large and the optimal solution is therefore difficult to identify. Crushing plant process design is no exception from this statement. In order to find the best solution issues like equipment selection and process configuration must be mastered. The solution must both be technically feasible and preferably have a low operating cost. Since crushing plant design is a complex task with a large solution space it is basically impossible to master without a specialised tool. For a long time simulation softwares have been used to assist in the design process. These tools only give answers for how a user defined plant will operate. There are no tools with capabilities to consider different design options in order to determine what the most efficient solution looks like. In this paper a method for crushing plant design optimisation is presented. The novel method utilises a combined optimisation routine and expert system in order to find the most cost efficient solution to a given process task. The user will only need to define the feed material properties, the process capacity, and the end product requirements. The developed system will find the solution lowest production cost per ton.

Classification of mineral resource estimates is one of the most important responsibilities of the Competent Person. In recent years, classification decisions have been driven more by the detailed block-by-block attributes generated by the now widely applied geostatistical estimation methods, and less by a general geological overview. This is increasingly resulting in æspotted dogÆ outputs, in which blocks of Inferred Resources or unclassified material separate blocks of Measured and/or Indicated Resources, or individual drill holes are surrounded by annuli of Measured and Indicated Resource blocks. Not only are such outputs potentially misleading, since they ignore fundamentals such as continuity of geology and mineralisation between drill holes and the imprecise nature of resource estimation, they can also cause substantial problems for engineers undertaking mine designs and estimating ore reserves, particularly for underground mines. Competent Persons for mineral resources must keep in mind the purpose of their work, and should use their experience and judgement to avoid or smooth out æspotted dogÆ classifications, providing a result commensurate with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence. For their part, ore reserve Competent Persons must understand the resource estimation and classification process, and should question resource classifications that are not consistent with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence.

In this paper a project to develop a joint optimisation/simulation model for production planning in a mine-mill complex is presented. The system involves a mill receiving ore from a number of different locations, each with a unique mineral composition. The mill consists of several crushing and grinding circuits that function in series and parallel. Scheduling the flow of materials through the mill is complex due to constraints on throughput imposed by the millÆs design, the length of time material can be stockpiled on the surface, varying input mineral composition, and throughput targets for a range of output products.An optimisation model is used to create a set of campaigns (ore feed rates) over a given planning horizon under the assumption of deterministic mill throughput. A simulation model is used to evaluate the production plan under assumptions of stochastic machine failure and operational losses created by the need to cycle between input feeds. Campaign scheduling has two important implications for the simulation. First, during any campaign, multiple ore types may need to flow through the mill. However, the mill must be controlled to ensure that only one type of ore can be in a crusher, a grinder or a storage bin at any point in time. Second, as the mill switches from one campaign to another, the set of ores being processed may differ. Thus, the flow of ore through the equipment during a campaign changeover must be controlled to ensure that one or more of the ores from the current campaign can be completely eliminated before the ores from the new campaign are introduced.The simulation architecture employed for this project is Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) combined with MS-Excel as a user interface. A fixed step discrete event orientation is assumed as the simulation framework. A set of model constructs was built for the project with a specific Canadian milling operation in mind, but was designed to be representative of a broad class of milling operations. The constructs are implemented as class objects within the VBA structure, each with a number of properties and methods. The collection of VBA objects forms a composable modelling toolkit. These objects can be linked together by users, via MS-Excel, to represent a broad range of milling operations.

Recently Mount Isa Mines undertook a study to review the lead-zinc orebodies to extent of resource and reserves and determine the new life-of-mine schedule, as the Mount Isa and Hilton orebodies had not be reviewed for many years. Also, the recovered value of the Mount Isa, Hilton and George Fisher orebodies had been increased by major performance improvements in the lead-zinc concentrator. The Mount Isa Lead-Zinc concentrator processes fine-grained lead-zinc ore from the Mount Isa, Hilton and George Fisher orebodies. These orebodies have varying levels of pyrite and large variation in the grain size and texture of the galena, sphalerite and pyrite. This variation has a large effect on the recovery of the lead and zinc in the concentrator. Some ores achieve 90 per cent recovery at target grades, yet other ores are unable to achieve æsaleableÆ concentrate grade, with no metal being recovered to concentrate and therefore effectively losing the contained metal to the final tailings. Models were created to predict the metallurgical performance of these orebodies, to better reflect the variation that occurs. These improved metallurgical models and economic data allowed the determination of the Net Smelter Return (NSR) for each block in the geological block model. This NSR is the return to MIM of the metals contained in concentrate. The NSR was used as the cut-off grade criteria when determining the value of the ore. This formed the basis of the lead-zinc life-of-mine schedule and the optimisation of the lead-zinc business.

Today, it can be said that the majority of mines utilise communications equipment in one form or another. Either for communications between staff making their day-to-day operations more efficient, or for emergency communications, as well as linking computer based mine management systems, and providing remote control over complex mobile and fixed machinery. With the advances in technology now available, we are moving into the next generation of mine communications equipment, using digital communications in the underground mine environment. It is a proven fact that an efficient underground mine communications system can help maximise production, by providing major gains in areas such as equipment and manpower utilisation, staff and vehicle tracking, reaction times to break downs and emergencies. In this paper we will describe some of the facilities that are currently available, as well as what will soon be available to mining and tunnelling companies around the world.

The Sons of Gwalia Mine in Western Australia is situated about 140 miles north from Kalgoorlie in arid country, where supplies of fresh water are difficult to obtain.Mine salt water is used throughout the treatment plant, whilst fresh water for domestic, boiler, and power purposes is pumped from a number of shallow outlying wells. The waters from all wells are constant in character, although they vary in the quantities of salts contained.An average sample of mixed waters gave the following analysis (Gr. per gal.):Sodium chloride 70.82Magnesium chloride 33.03Calcium chloride 26.98Calcium carbonate .. 11.57Calcium sulphate 22.71Iron oxide and alumina 2.10Silica and insoluble 4.58When this water is used in the boilers in its natural state it is scale-forming and intensely corrosive.

Optimisation projects are regularly undertaken without knowing the root cause of an issue. It is all well and good to trial a multitude of flotation reagents, change the operating characteristics of your flotation cells, or add more media into your ball mills, but time and again, root cause analysis traces issues back to the performance of hydrocyclones. In JKTech's experience, hydrocyclones are poorly operated and maintained (in both primary grinding and regrind circuits), exacerbating issues that many operations commonly experience.Recent case studies are presented where JKTech has been engaged to improve the process only to discover that the hydrocyclones were the main issue. At one operation it was found that the hydrocyclone feed density gauge was reading significantly lower to the actual density. Following re-calibration of the gauge, and with further improvement of cyclone operational and design parameters using JKSimMet, a significantly sharper efficiency curve was achieved. This resulted in improvements to downstream recoveries while alleviating pumping capacities that were previously constrained by fines and water caught up in recirculating loads.Several other case studies are presented which may seem to be relatively basic, but many basics seem to be getting lost in the day-to-day responsibilities of the modern plant metallurgist. The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014. Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is the primary global source of titaniumdioxide which is commonly used as a whitening agent in papermanufacture and a pigment in paint manufacture. In WesternAustralia ilmenite is processed by the Becher process (Becher,1963, Becher et al, 1965) where ilmenite particles are feddirectly into the furnace with coal and heated to form acomposite of elemental iron and TiO2. The mechanism of thecarbothermic reduction of ilmenite has been extensively studied(Grey, Jones and Reid, 1973; Jones, 1973; Grey and Reid, 1974;El-Tawil, Morse and Francis, 1993) and is reasonably wellaccepted.

The sampling time, the costs and its quality are the three factors that determine the best method of drilling in mineral exploration. The two principal methods of reverse circulation (RC) and diamond core drilling are often used in combination by mine operators. RC is used for drilling shallow holes and in-pit grade control, and core drilling for deeper holes to identify future resources. The RC method is faster and more flexible than coring and provides virtually uncontaminated cuttings (ranges from dust to 25 mm chips) to the surface cyclone suitable for geochemical anomalies. The diamond coring produces core samples to increase the level of geological knowledge and the 3D extension and distribution of the orebody. However, both of these methods are subjected to certain limitations and inefficiencies in reaching deeper depths and drilling complex hole geometries. Examples of such shortcomings include the inability to provide enough air pressure for RC drilling and high friction between drill pipe and the hole wall in diamond core drilling.Considering that delivering large volume of reliable samples from deep zones to the surface in shortest possible time is of paramount importance in mineral exploration, and assuming that obtaining core samples over whole overburden is not always essential, then drilling small size holes as fast as possible and delivering the small chip samples to the surface would be a good alternative with several advantages over conventional drilling methods for deep hard rocks mineral exploration. As a result, the use of coiled tube (CT) drilling technology has been proposed recently for such applications. CT is a continuous length of ductile steel or composite tube stored and transported on a large reel; and allows fast drilling by eliminating the connection time and providing continuous circulation during drilling. This enables quick access to the zone of interest to collect the cuttings or obtain core samples. CT is advantageous particularly in drilling directional boreholes and multi-laterals. In this paper, feasibility of using CT delivering reliable samples is discussed for deep mineral exploration. The last 20 years have seen a dramatic rise in the use of 3D visualisation and modelling for geological data, but there has been relatively little effort to do the same for the variogram models that underpin the standard estimation algorithms used by the mining industry.For kriging, one of the most used geostatistical estimation methods, specifying a variogram model is a critical part of the modelling process. Experimental variography is the primary method for approximating the theoretical variogram function from the available sample data, and then determining an appropriate variogram model from the approximations.The traditional tools used for experimental variography are limited to looking at subsets of the data and are often presented without reference to geographic space and geology. It can be difficult to know what input data is being used for a particular experimental variogram, and whether there is enough support in the experimental variograms to propose an appropriate model.To overcome these limitations, an innovative approach called situational variography has been proposed that visualises variograms in 3D alongside contextual geological and geometric data. Presenting variograms in this manner aids understanding of how the spatial variance relates to the underlying data.A 3D extension of the 2D radial variogram maps will be investigated which allows for dynamic exploration of the full experimental variogram cloud. Bauxite was discovered in the Kimberley in 1965 by an Amax field crew. Reserves of 230 million tons, of bauxite. averaging 47% total alumina on Mitchell Plateau and 980 million tons averaging 36% total alumina on Cape Bougainville have been indicated by the results of drilling and bulk sampling. Laterite which contains the bauxite deposits caps basalt and interbedded sandstone and siltstone of the Carson Volcanics formation. Bauxite on Mitchell Plateau is 3.2 metres thick on average and is underlain successively by nodular ironstone, clay and basalt. The major components of the bauxite are gibbsite,boehmite, hematite and goethite containing some alumina, anatase and clay minerals. Quartz and vanadium oxide are minor constituents. Boehmite and hematite are concentrated near the surface, whereas gibbsite and goethite predominate at depth. The bauxite profile consists of ferru- ginous, pisolitic and gibbsitic zones with increasing depth. Cape Bougainville bauxite is 8.6 metres thick on average and of tubular structure; its mineralogy is relatively uniform..

Metals are essential for the sustainability transition and decarbonisation of society. Yet, it will be paramount to produce them sustainably and minimise the affiliated resource and energy use and the associated emissions. In the circular economy, the metallurgical industry should recycle existing material stocks, and improve its utilisation of wastes, residues and side streams. This increases the complexity of processes, as they become both (often multi-fraction) waste treatment as well as material production processes and brings complexity to the assessment of environmental benefits. Assessing the environmental impact of technological developments frequently is supported by life cycle assessment (LCA). While the method is well documented, its implementation involves several methodological choices that deserve reasoning and analysis, such as how to define the product when former wastes are turned into new products, the selection of impact methodology when converting emissions to environmental indicators, the definition of system boundaries and co-product allocation and the interpretation of sensitivity and uncertainty in final outcomes. In this exploratory study, we investigate how the variation of LCA set-up affects the environmental burden of the system. We consider a metallurgical process where a mix of hard-to-recycle aluminium-containing streams is used to produce aluminium cast alloys in a rotary furnace. Remelting with salt-fluxes allows recovering metals from partly oxidised/contaminated streams, such as dross, bottom ash and industrial shavings, but at the expense of generating significant amounts of salt-slag/salt-cake hazardous waste. The study considers different system alternatives such as landfilling the salt-slag residues versus valourising them into salts, aluminium concentrates, ammonium sulfate and non-metallic-compounds to be used by the metallurgical, construction or chemical industries. Practical recommendations are outlined to facilitate the implementation of LCA in assessing the potential benefits of the circular economy in the metallurgical sector.

"This paper reports on the long-term operation of a particle density meter (PDM) at the Bloomfield coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). This unit has been operating continuously for over three years, providing real-time data to the operators to allow the monitoring of flotation circuit performance. PDM outputs include slurry density, solids concentration on both mass and volumetric basis, and particle density. Knowing the average particle density of a stream allows for the optimisation of the process in real-time.The calibration of the solids concentration measurement device proved very difficult as the factory calibration techniques and existing laboratory analysis did not give accurate or reliable results. The solids concentration device had to be re-engineered and a new calibration method developed that gave accurate and repeatable results. Independent verification of samples taken from the PDM was undertaken as part of the trial process.The operational reliability of the PDM was a major point of investigation. The initial installation of the unit revealed issues with large, misplaced material of up to 20 mm periodically entering the unit, leading to feed blockages. The presence of these misplaced, oversized particles in the flotation circuit was resolved by installing innovative automatic back flush systems on the PDM.From a plant perspective the PDM has been an invaluable instrument that has enabled irregularities in the flotation circuit performance to be identified, which sampling had not and could not readily identify. This was achieved by close monitoring of real-time tailings composition on a minute by minute basis over short and extended periods. Variations in the tailings stream with respect to particle density and solids concentration were traced back to other issues in the plant. In addition, the PDM has allowed cell optimisation with respect to reagent dose rate to be improved. Benchmarking, comparing an operation or process with the industry standard, is known to be a useful method for identifying plant optimisation opportunities, and in many cases providing the pathway to realise the benefits. The difficulty is generating the database of plant data necessary for a benchmarking exercise. Larger companies can benchmark internally; this option is not available to smaller companies, and the full value can only be realised with a comprehensive “industry wide” approach.The Gold Technology Group at Curtin University through the AMIRA P420 series of projects has undertaken several comprehensive metallurgical industry surveys in the gold industry over the last two decades. Analysis of these surveys has demonstrated areas where many operations can benefit from re-assessment of their operating practices.This paper will review the work undertaken by the Group in this area, in particular the 1999 surveys of gold companies in the Australasian region, and the 2012 international survey of the industry. The challenges of, and opportunities arising from these surveys will be discussed.
