Geostatistics has been widely used for more than four decades as a powerful tool in ore resource/reserve estimates and grade control. This method has gradually replaced the conventional method such as polygon and cross-section for grade estimation by more mathematical techniques such as kriging. The advances in geostatistical understanding and the availability of appropriate software packages have given much more contribution in speed and high accuracy during production. However, in many cases, these techniques are sometime applied without support with a good thorough understanding of the geological controls on metal distribution. To produce the result close to actual, the geological control in interpretation and appropriate geostatistical task is a must. Geological logging was described in the core must be consistent with the level plan produced by commercial modelling software used as a guide for grade control during production. Experience gained through evaluation of the Central I deposit resulted that the most effective systems continue to be based on geostatistical methods of resource estimation. Computer applications modelling software packages are necessarily as the core of an efficient in undertaking these assignments. They contribute to make a valued to data management and are becoming increasingly effective during processing. The latter role is particularly important to check the actual versus estimated values where will significantly to improve personnel to have a confident with their knowledge combined with experience and complete their jobs satisfy.

Aitik, a Boliden owned and operated open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand production from 18 Mt per year today to 36 Mt per year copper ore during 2010. The challenge for the mine operation is to double production with a planned increase of the shovel and truck fleet of only 50 per cent. This will be achieved through improved shovel and truck utilisation and productivity. In early 2005 Aitik started projects to enhance the utilisation of truck engine hours and to reduce fuel consumption. Both projects were successful, within a year efficient2 utilisation of engine hours increased from 60 per cent to 75 per cent and fuel consumption was reduced by six to eight per cent. The truck utilisation project focused on minimising idle truck hours by for example four operators on three trucks thus reducing idle engine hours to minimise lost time for breaks and shift changes. Other measures included focusing on improved dispatch usage, parking trucks when overtrucked, etc. Eco-driving was a project together with Swedish Road Administration with the objective to combine economical and environmental savings. To keep the focus on eco-driving a reward was set up for the shift team with the lowest fuel rate over rolling 15 weeks periods. Both activities included a comprehensive training program for mine foremen, dispatchers and truck operators focusing on efficient use of trucks from economic driving to optimised truck dispatching and minimising idle engine hours. Online monitoring of trucks activities and fuel consumption combined with continuous reporting gave shift foremen and management a tool to discuss and follow trends and individual shift team performance. The combination of close monitoring of mainly organisational practices and operator training resulted in significant productivity increase and lower operating costs without any capital investments.

Glencore Coal Assets Australia (GCAA) operates five coalmines in Queensland and has rehabilitated thousands of hectares of mined land across these sites. Accordingly, GCAA seeks to continually improve rehabilitation outcomes over time and work towards progressive rehabilitation sign-off. The ultimate test of rehabilitation success is the attainment of an agreed land-use target, whether for biodiversity conservation or some type of agricultural production, and the ability of the rehabilitated landscape to resist degradation and retain desired functions (eg biodiversity protection or grazing productivity). However, success must be based on documented evidence that can demonstrate adequate progress towards rehabilitation targets and is assessed at appropriate intervals. To assist this task, a stepwise decision guide for the GCAA monitoring program was developed to ensure consistent monitoring data is collected across the range of sites. This presentation will discuss some of the processes that were followed to allow GCAA to identify appropriate metrics to assess rehabilitation success efficiently over thousands of hectares.CITATION:Erskine, P, Fletcher, A and Swart, P, 2016. "The Caijiaying lead zinc mine is located in China, north-west of Beijing, in Hebei Province. The region experiences severe winters, below -35°C, and warm summers, up to 30°C. The mine and concentrator commenced operations in the second half of 2005 with a conventional tailings disposal system consisting of a tailings dam with peripheral ring main discharge and central water recovery. A second similar dam sharing one common wall was added later. In view of the extreme winter conditions tailings lines and ring mains plus spigots, together with return water lines, require insulation and electrical trace heating. The volume of process water trapped as ice in the tailings dam ponds each winter is significant. This seasonal variation presents a major difficulty in the management of process water availability. Although Caijiaying is an underground mine there was no backfill plant at the start of operations. As plant throughput increased more quickly than originally anticipated, tailings storage capacity became a prime concern. The construction of a backfill plant in 2007 reduced the pressure on surface tailings storage area requirements, but as suitable land on which to construct further tailings storage was both expensive and difficult to acquire, a more efficient use of the available area was required. Dry tailings storage, where flotation tailings are filtered to provide an immediate return of process water plus ‘dry’ tailings filter cake for stacking, provided an answer to both the land area required, and the water management difficulties. The paper details the reasoning behind the change and the benefits obtained at Caijiaying by moving from ‘wet’ tailings storage to ‘dry’ tailings storage.Citation:Waldram, J T and Jia, R, 2016. Full-stream mechanised sampling apparatus, that collect a full cross-sectional increment from the complete screen discharge, will always be the preferred option for sampling screen overflows. However, the reality is that provisions for automated sampling are rarely, if ever, provided at the discharges of individual screens within beneficiation plants.Sampling from the discharge of high capacity vibrating screens, especially multi-slope screens, is subject to sampling bias, due to the stratification of the ore that occurs on the vibrating screen deck. The stratification in the vibrating bed translates to a stratified falling stream at the discharge end of the screen, typically with smaller particles at the back of the falling stream and large particles at the front of the falling stream (Figure 1).The chemical and physical characteristics of heterogeneous ore (mineral or coal) particles vary significantly with particle size. If samples do not correctly reflect the source material size distribution, they will be biased and the resulting analytical/assay data will not reflect the actual physical nor chemical characteristics of the source material.Prior published data for coal preparation research (Australian Coal Association Research Program) has demonstrated that a bias appears to exist for samples collected from high capacity multi-slope screens.A new form of sampling scoop has been developed with the aim of overcoming this issue.Bias was evaluated at a coal preparation plant by comparing the desliming screen overflow size distribution to that for æreferenceÆ coal preparation plant feed samples collected using the recognised stopped-belt technique. The study procured 20 sets of comparison samples in order to ensure statistical relevance.Two forms of sampling device were employed for the multislope screen discharge.A conventional square aperture scoop was demonstrated to exhibit a significant coarse bias, in that the resulting samples exhibited a significantly coarser size distribution compared to the reference samples. In other words it was evident that the conventional scoop æfavouredÆ material from the front of the falling stream.A new æcollapsibleÆ sample scoop was evaluated in parallel, and its samples were found to exhibit no relevant bias.CITATION:Atkinson, B W and Swanson, A R, 2012. When times are tough in the mineral industry û as they have been for some time û typical responses by mining companies are to cut costs and/ or increase production. The latter is seen to spread fixed costs, thereby also reducing unit costs per tonne mined. However, most mineral deposits respond to increased production rates by lowering ore grades, so the reduction in cost per tonne of ore does not necessarily result in a reduced cost per unit of metal produced. The authorsÆ experience is that this process often leads to a mine plan that is a long way from optimal. Producing to the point where marginal cost equals marginal revenue may work well in a manufacturing operation, but it is not necessarily the best strategy for a mining company with a depleting resource. Variations in tonnage and grade with depth, ore reserve optimism and a variety of other factors conspire to produce variations in production rates and grade that often result in suboptimal outcomes and potential mine failure. Added to this is the focus of industry analysts and senior corporate management on such measures as unit costs and ounces in reserves. This is perceived to have the perverse effect of driving the share price down when strategies are adopted that actually improve the value of the mining operation, and vice versa! Many mine failures can be prevented by a close examination of the tonnage grade curve and an understanding of how margins, net cash flows and resulting business risk change with cut-off grades and rates of production. A few relatively simple analyses early in the evaluation of a project can demonstrate the tradeoffs between the main decision parameters, leading to right-sizing of the operation. Once major commitments to major capital items have been made, and reserves have been publicly reported, optimisation of the operation becomes much more difficult than if it had been done earlier. Such investigations can also identify the upside potential and downside risks associated with factors outside the companyÆs control. Many strategies that may enhance value in the good times significantly increase the downside risk in the bad times. What is often called risk analysis typically looks at superficial issues, and does not evaluate the major factors leading to the potential for financial disaster. This paper illustrates some of these major risks, and demonstrates how they may be fully evaluated so that corporate decision makers can make fully informed decisions that take account of the real risks.

A new class of collectors, Mercapto-Benzo-Oxazoles (MBO), exerting selective action on copper sulphides in the presence of Pb, Zn and Fe sulphides (galena, sphalerite and pyrite), has been synthesised in co-operation with Enichem's Donegani Insitute. The collectors have a mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure and contain functional groups which form chelates with copper. Some reagents of this class having hydrocarbon chains of various lengths have been laboratory tested on a complex sulphide ore containing chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite in pyritic gangue. Comparative flotation tests have permitted selection of the best collector for chalcopyrite, namely Methyl-Mercapto- Benzoxazole (MMBO). Systematic flotation tests have been performed with this reagent, varying collector concentration, grain size of the feed, pH and flotation time. The results obtained show that the synthesised collector is much better than potassium-amylxanthate (KAX) as regards selectivity towards Pb and Zn. Moreover, it is possible to work at natural pH (6-7) and the flotation rate is higher. In fact in the rougher stage with 80 g/t of collector at natural pH, a copper grade of 7.14 per cent was obtained with a recovery of 73.87 per cent, while the grade with KAX did not exceed 2.11 per cent for a recovery of 73.54 per cent. The amount of Pb and Zn reporting in the copper concentrate was eight per cent and ten per cent respectively, while with KAX it was no lower than 24.34 per cent and 22.71 per cent in that order. After two minutes flotation a copper grade of 5.2 per cent with 52 per cent recovery could be attained, against a grade of 2.5 per cent and a recovery of 44 per cent in the case of KAX. The efficiency of this new collector has been ascertained on two samples of complex sulphide ores of diverse mineralogical composition.

The Research Centres Program initiated by the Federal Government and supported by the mining industry has had a major impact on geoscience research and education during the past five years. Eight major university based-Geoscience Research Centres are currently supported by the Government, including four Key Centres of Teaching and Research and a further four Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). The Research Centres Program has led to a concentration of high quality research and teaching in areas of demand and strategic importance creating strong university - industry linkages and a source of well trained and motivated graduates. Over the last decade Australia's reputation as a leader in mineral exploration and ore deposit research has grown substantially, in part because of the development of the Research Centres Program, and to increased collaboration and interaction between research groups and exploration geoscientists across the industry. During a period when ore deposit research activity has been decreasing in other countries (eg USA, Canada, Japan and most European countries), equivalent research activities in Australia have been increasing, within a well co-ordinated national framework. The future challenge for universities and the mining industry will be to maintain the momentum of the successful research centres in order for the centres to become self-funding over a six- to nine-year period.

THE Company's smelting equipment consists of three blast furnaces, supplied with blast from two sets of vertical piston blowers, each capable of delivering 8000 cub. ft. of air per minute at a pressure of 60 oz. per sq. in. Each blower is belt-driven by a 1:30 h.p. motor. The maximum speed of the blowing engine is 35 r.p.m.No. 1, the largest of the three blast furnaces, has a crucible area of 49.5 sq. ft., and measures 11 ft. 6 in. x 5 ft. at the tuyeres.From tapping floor to feed floor measures 35 ft. 9 in., and holds, when full, 100 tons of charge. Blast enters through thirteen 3-m. tuyeres at 60-oz. pressure. Working normally, this furnace is capable of treating :300 tons of charge, exclusive of returned slag and coke, per 24: hours, with an output of 100 tons of lead. Tapped slag flows into a C.l. forehearth mounted on wheels, where any lead and matte is caught, and the slag overflows into a 3-ton cast-iron pot, in which it is drawn away by an electric locomotive and poured over the dump.

Good mining is central to any approach to value tracking. Good mining occurs where the ore is correctly delineated, measured and fed to the mill. This process is usually referred to as grade control, ore control or quality control. There are now ways to measure the efficiency of this process, such as by using conditional simulation, and a brief synopsis is presented. Resource estimation is the foundation of ore reserve estimation, which should enable useful prediction of the expected metal to be recovered from mining and milling. Significant improvements have resulted from applying new techniques such as the Chain of Mining (CoM) method, which models the mining process. Again, a brief synopsis is presented. Tracking value from the mine through the mill implies a linear sequence of processes that can be modelled. Reality is more complex and there are error components, feedback loops and breaks in the Chain of Value. Modelling the total production process in a number of operations is considered, including the various impacts on producing reconciliations. Procedures are also discussed for handling a number of difficult issues such as: different data supports, stockpiling strategies, blending from multiple ore sources, blast movement and underground ore extraction.

The control of phosphorus in steelmaking is one of the famous challenges of pyrometallurgy. It is well established that highly basic slags, the presence of FeO in the slag and lower temperatures (less than 1650°C) are favourable for phosphorous removal. The thermodynamics of this reaction have been extensively studied under laboratory conditions and the general trends confirmed through industrial trials. However, in general, phosphorus slag/metal distributions measured in industry are far from equilibrium and quite specific to the oxygen steelmaking technology being used. This variability was quantified by Urban, Weinberg and Cappel (2015), who found that the phosphorus partition ratio measured in plants varied with blowing practice, stirring intensity and even converter life. Some recent kinetic studies by Gu, Dogan and Coley (2017) have shown how the kinetics of these reactions vary with FeO content and dissolved sulfur at the droplet scale. A global kinetic model by Rout et al (2018) provides meaningful predictions of where dephosphorisation occurs in an industrial basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and some recent heat transfer modelling by Madhavan et al (2021, 2022) implies that temperature difference between droplets and slag has a role to play in explaining why equilibrium is not achieved. This paper will review the current state of knowledge and provide suggestions on predicting phosphorous removal for industrial operations and how greater removal could be achieved.

A brick veneer house located on a open-pit coal mine lease has been subject to ground vibration levels of up to 222 mm/s, and air vibration levels of up to 145 dBL. The dynamic response of the structure was measured with accelerometers, geophones, and strain gauges as part of a project investigating the response of brick veneer houses to blasting. This paper outlines the project, and provides information on brickwork strength, foundation investigations, and observations on damage due to blasting. Correlations have been made between crack behaviour and factors such as blast vibration levels and rainfall.

A low grade copper flotation tailing from Telfer containing 1.2% Cu as chalcocite and cuprite and 5 gt-t Au was leached with ammonia, cyanide and ammonia-cyanide mixtures to extract copper and/or gold. Direct cyanidation extracted both copper and gold but consumed about 30 kgt 1 NaCN. Pre-leaching the tailing with an aerated ammonia solution containing 28 kgt 1NH3 and 17 kgtl(NHa)2S0a at pH 10 readily extracted up to 95% Cu in about 6 hours under optimum conditions. However pH and total ammonia concentration were critical factors. Subsequent cyanidation ex- tracted 80% Au using 6 kgt NNaCN. Ammonia-cyanide mixtures werefound to selectively leach gold over copper depending on the concentration and relative proportion of NH3 and CN. The best composition for leaching up to 80% Au from Teller tailing was 1.6 kgt t NaCN and 1.1 kgf 1 NH3 in the presence of 0.3 kgt t Cue+. Such a mixture left only 50 mgL-1Cu in the final solution after precipitation of some of the initially dissolved copper.

"It is vitally important in projects where the cut-off grade is low that there is no contamination during the sampling and sample preparation process, both in the ore and the waste zones. Failure to identify contamination could have devastating financial consequences for a project. The use of a variety of blank types is essential for ensuring that contamination is identified and eliminated at every stage of the sampling and sample preparation process. This paper examines an instance where an effective assay quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) program was able to identify and eliminate a source of significant multi-element contamination in the prefeasibility stages of an open pit project. This examination includes the: evidence for contamination findings of the investigation process of resolving the problem and correcting the data evidence for both addition of metal and dilution through contamination potential impact on the project had this issue not been dealt with. It was through the use of a combination of blank types that the QA/QC process at Mount Isa Mines (MIM) identified a contamination issue at the first crushing phase of sample preparation. Identification of the contamination allowed MIM to stop assaying activities and work with the laboratory to correct the problem. The sampling program could then be continued with no further doubts about the sample preparation process. Contaminated samples were resampled from retained core. With the continuous monitoring provided by the blanks program, it was possible to ensure that only clean results went into the resource modelling data set. CITATION:Webb, J, 2014. In 1991 the uranium spot market price dropped to approximately US$7/Ib U308, a historical low in real terms and the short-term outlook for the industry in the next five years was grim. At this time the Ranger operation was producing uranium concentrate at its design capacity of approximately 3 000 tonnes/year. The loss of two major long-term contracts owing to price and reduced power utility demand due to excess inventories meant that the company could not match production to sales. Continuance at this production level would have resulted in a rapid buildup of product inventory and the tie-up of significant cash reserves. After analysing various options, an innovative operating strategy was devised such that production and sales were approximately balanced without a significant impact on the unit production cost or a long term effect on the plant or operation. A campaign mining/milling operation commenced and approximately 40 per cent of the workforce were retrenched. Multi-skilling of all employees was a critical aspect of ensuring a successful outcome. This paper examines the strategy and reports on the success of the operation two years after the restructuring exercise was effected in November 1991.

In the 1990s round flotation tanks were introduced as a result of the lower fabrication costs for larger cells. It was soon observed that round tanks held a number of further advantages over the traditional rectangular cells, such as better hydrodynamics, lower costs and reduced footprint per unit volume.In the last twenty years flotation cell sizes have increased almost exponentially and designs of 250 to 300m3 are a well established standard with plans for full scale pilot installations of 500m3. The option to install these large cells gives flexibility in circuit arrangements and allows efficient and economic matching of flotation lines with modern mill designs. The benefits of scale up are well known with reduced numbers of cells required, lower power costs per unit volume, etc. These benefits will be briefly reviewed with specific reference to the installation of 300m3 to 350m3 flotation cells at the Copperton Concentrator of Kennecott Copper in Utah, USA.The sophisticated techniques required to model these ‘supercells’ have led to a critical review of the fundamentals of flotation science and engineering. In addition to outlining the advantages of large flotation cells, this paper will review the science which supports, and occasionally challenges, the ongoing trend to larger flotation cells.

The aim of this research is to develop a model through which the appropriate paste recipe parameters, for example solid content and cement content, can be derived given the stope specific requirements such as stope dimensions, required strength and curing time. A large number of samples and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted at the Angas Zinc Mine (AZM) paste plant and testing facility. Samples were varied in tailings solids content, cement content and sand content. The results of this testing were modelled to determine the UCS relationship to each of the parameters. The output of this modelling was an easy-to-use program that outputs the design mixture given the stope dimensions and required stope backfill-curing time. This allowed flexibility within the mining schedule for curing times of cemented paste backfill stopes. The optimised schedule using the stope specific mix design, when compared to the standard 14-day curing time used previously, resulted in a smoother weekly mine production schedule. For the modelled 12-week period (one quarter) the 14-day curing time would result in an eight-day shutdown of the mill. The cost for each shutdown is in the order of $125 000/d. Due to the unique nature of each mine’s tailings, this exact outcome would not be directly applicable to another paste fill site. However, the process in this report could be followed for another site to achieve a system similar to the output of this project. "This paper outlines a simple methodology for iron ore characterisation. Iron ores commonly contain a range of iron oxides with varying iron content along with generally minor quantities of lighter silicate gangue phases, giving rise to density variations. Companies tend to rely on heavy liquid separation (HLS) in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Heavy suspension separation (HSS), a simple laboratory technique of density fractionation, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide (WC) particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, can be used in the evaluation of iron ore.As part of Arrium Mining’s program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed and geometallurgical evaluation for the OBPs has become a major focus.Metallurgical evaluation of the hematite ore ultra-fine size fraction, formally treated as waste but now upgraded by HSS, is a part of Arrium’s program to improve recovery.The HLS method for iron ore characterisation is not generally used as part of routine iron ore feed metallurgical evaluation due to the expense, toxicity and time-consuming nature of the technique. Results show that the HSS method for iron ore characterisation can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and can be used on-site to improve turnaround time of results (Begelhole, Jasper and Koroznikova, 2013).Arrium have applied this technique successfully for the past three years to progress process improvement for the two OBP as well as to assist Arrium’s on-site laboratory services, Bureau Veritas in Whyalla.The main objective of this program has been to further develop the HSS procedures using a low-toxicity, high specific gravity (SG) suspension; LST and WC as the dense medium for metallurgical evaluation of ultra-fines.A suspension of a particular density will separate iron ore into two products: a sink fraction (denser iron oxide – hydroxide particles) and float fraction (silicate – iron ore composite particles). A theoretical grade and mass recovery can be calculated, and a grade – mass recovery curve can be constructed for iron.Metallurgical evaluation of the plant feed ultra-fine size fractions are used to improve efficiency of an upgrading plant process.
