The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has contributed significantly to chemometrics by allowing data analysts to become more aware of total measurement uncertainty as total sampling error + total analytical error. This has allowed a new view on, for example, validation of multivariate data models and their performance. This keynote focuses mostly on the reverse perspective: how can chemometric multivariate data modelling be of help in an augmented sampling context? The basic principles of multivariate data analysis are presented and application examples are outlined from several areas in the geosciences to facilitate answers to the question posed, including a geochemical multivariate anomaly concept defined by a multivariate background model. Applications from geochemical prospecting, geochemical mapping, environmental chemistry and anthropogenic outlier recognition are outlined, as are the interdependent relationships between geostatistical modelling (variographics) of singular variables versus linear combinations of a multitude of variables, in chemometrics called scores. The potential synergy between chemometrics and TOS is far from exhausted at this time; much work remains.CITATION:Esbensen, K H, 2014. Hibbing Taconite is a Lake Superior-type granular magnetite taconite deposit occurring within the Biwabik Iron Formation along Minnesota’s central Mesabi Iron Range. The deposit is situated on the northern margin of the Proterozoic Animikie Basin. The deposit strikes northeast, dips gently southeast, and occupies 10 km of strike length. Mining focuses on 50 m of granular cherty and laminated slaty taconite within the Lower Cherty member.Ores generally consist of a quartz, magnetite, siderite, ankerite, minnesotaite, stilpnomelane, and haematite mineral assemblage. Processing is optimised by exploiting the physical and chemical variations that exist between three major ore types. Taconite ore averages 20 per cent magnetic iron (MagFe), 27 per cent weight recovery (WtRec) and produces a final concentrate with 4.5 per cent silica (SiO2). Since 1976, production has totalled approximately 237 million long tons (Mlt) of pellets (8 Mlt per year rated capacity).Ore processing uses a simple fl ow sheet of autogenous grinding (<0.044 mm) followed by two phases of wet magnetic separation, fi ltering, limestone/bentonite addition, balling, and firing to create pellets averaging 66 per cent total iron. A Liberation Index (LIS) is used as a primary guide for ore grading and metallurgical control. Grind requirements, magnetite liberation and silica grade are closely monitored to ensure plant optimisation and product quality.A recent program of benefi ciation of low-grade ores by in-pit crushing and dry magnetic cobbing has demonstrated that low-grade ores (<17 per cent MagFe, <25 per cent WtRec) can achieve a signifi cant metallurgical upgrade (up to 25 per cent MagFe and 40 per cent WtRec). This operation recovers 60 per cent of the total crushed volume, and has a calculated effi ciency factor (magnetic iron recovery) of 79 per cent. This paper discusses the benefi ts of this upgrading and its effects on ore blending and processing.

Mineral processing plants have become large and complex, generally through progressive expansions. Addition of a pre-crushing stage to conventional Semi-Autogenous-Grinding (SAG) and ball mill - crushing (SABC) circuits has introduced a complex materials handling system coping with +200 mm particles. Application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) and implementing hybrid comminution circuits (ie, HPGR-SAG mill) requires proactive control of the feed size distribution to each unit. Application of Vertical Tower Mills (VTMs) and other fine grinding equipment to achieve a finer grind size, while maintaining the throughput, requires splitting the feed evenly between parallel units. Many of the conventional comminution circuits (ie, staged crushing and screening followed by staged ball milling) must deal with the transition from open pit ore, which is generally altered and soft, to underground ore, which is intact and hard, requiring existing crushers to produce a finer product to unload the ball mills.This paper presents common process improvement opportunities which have been identified during a number plant process reviews conducted by the authors in Australian and international operations. The operation of comminution circuits to known and accepted standards, which is explained in this paper, could improve the performance of circuits by between 5 and 10 per cent, generally at no capital cost and often at a lower operating cost. The performance improvement can be realised as throughput increase, a finer product size, or reduced operating costs (ie, energy saving, low maintenance, less consumables).Process optimisation opportunities presented in this paper include: enhancing materials handling and storage to avoid segregation; standard operation of screens to reduce misplaced materials; proper feeding arrangement and control of crushers to increase their utilisation; preparing proper feed for SAG mills to reduce grind size; splitting the feed evenly between parallel equipment to improve utilisation, and controlling operation of classification units to improve energy utilisation.CITATION:Yahyaei, M and Powell, M S, 2018. There is no doubt that the mining sector is considered to be the backbone of many countries. Furthermore, it has played an important role in the prosperity of nations, whether developed or developing. Saudi Arabia is one of these countries that has a large variety of metallic and non-metallic mineral resources that range in size and value occurrences of limited potential to deposits large enough to sustain profitable exploitation. Therefore, the Saudi government needs to reinforce the capacity of the sectoral institutions to better regulate and promote the sustainable development of the sector. The ability to overcome the administrative and legal complications that constrain private sector participation in the minerals sector, through new mining code which will streamline the procedures for obtaining licenses and will add more predictability and transparency to the application process, are proposed for increasing the sustainable development. This paper will outline how the Saudi government is tackling the major challenges that face the minerals industry. This paper provides the background to the Saudi Arabian mineral sector and its industrial base. Finally, the paper identifies the problems and constraints that face the minerals sector in Saudi Arabia and provides an assessment of the effects of government policies and planning efforts in the minerals sector, particularly during the period of the development plans which started in 1970.

Inertia cone crushers have found applications mostly in steel slag crushing operations in China. Compared with conventional eccentric cone crushers, the crusher has an obvious advantage in reducing product size. In addition, they are mostly used in two-stage open circuit crushing flow sheet, which simplifies the crushing process. However, inertia cone crushers are not widely used in the mineral processing industry due to their low crushing capacity. In this paper, the throughput performance of the inertia cone crusher was investigated in a laboratory-scale inertia cone crusher and relationships between operational parameters were identified. Iron ore was crushed using orthogonal experimental method under different machine parameters and operational conditions. The crusher throughput and product size distributions were determined. The effects of parameters such as eccentric speed, discharge gap, eccentric mass and eccentric distance on product mass flow and product size were investigated. The results of this study can help reduce the feed size of the mill in order to reduce total energy consumption of comminution.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world’s premier suppliers of iron ore. It currently has operations in Western Australia and Brazil and also has some iron ore interests in West Africa.BHP Billiton’s Optimisation R&D team has developed a proprietary mine planning optimisation tool that uses a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This tool is called Blasor and it is used to rapidly evaluate the resource development potential (RDP) scenarios for the company’s business development strategy. In addition it generates life of asset (LOA) mine plans for the company’s operations and growth projects. The Blasor optimiser maximises the discounted operating cash fl ow (DCF) as the objective function, subject to mining, processing and transportation capacity constraints and blended product quality constraints. The paper will outline how Blasor has been applied to the resource development potential (RDP) strategy scenario studies, growth project evaluations and LOA mine planning within BHP Billiton Iron Ore.The practical application of Blasor to resource planning optimisation within BHP Billiton Iron Ore has demonstrated the value of such a tool for optimising strategic directions through the evaluation of a number of carefully proposed scenarios and maximisation of operational decisions, such as cut-off grade, open pit development sequence, etc. Particularly for the company’s business development direction studies, Blasor plays the role of a fair valuation tool in that it discovers the most valuable resource development scenario, thus establishing a sound basis for comparing the economic merits of each scenario.

"This paper presents a case study demonstrating active geotechnical pit slope management at the now completed Carina Iron Ore Project operated by Mineral Resources Ltd (MRL). The site is located 105 km north-east of Southern Cross, Western Australia. The paper is primarily focused on the slope stability failure modes and the remedial measures employed to maintain mining.Between a quarter and a third of the excavated slopes were impacted by some form of instability that was beyond expectations of the intended slope design criteria and common practice. Ongoing mining was supported by intensive geotechnical pit slope management including close cooperation between geotechnical, mine planning and operations staff to achieve timely and practical mining solutions.Mining encountered varied slope failure mechanisms which required a combination of remedial solutions comprising: horizontal depressurisation holes, deferral of excavation, unloading, buttressing and catch berms.The root cause of the challenging slope performance was a mismatch between the predicted and encountered geotechnical model, resulting from a failure to recognise the critical mechanisms that control slope stability.Despite the extensive zones of instabilities at completion of mining, full ore recovery was achieved without major delays and in a controlled and safe manner.Citation:Fowler, M, Strang, D and Jaine, R, 2016. Various Australian and international regulatory bodies (Environmental Protection Authority, 2015) require an early assessment of the geochemistry of waste rock. This usually includes estimates of the locations and volumes of potentially acid forming (PAF) materials and requires sampling of the waste rock zones as well as submitting the samples for a series of tests. We know that the required number of samples will vary depending on rock type, mean sulfur levels and spatial variability of sulfur as well as total volume. The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia, approximately 500 km long by 200 km wide, is recognised globally for its rich endowment of iron ore resources. Two types of bedded iron ore mineralisation are recognised: the Proterozoic hypogene martite-microplaty hematite ores; and the more recent Cenozoic supergene martite-goethite ores. Exploration strategies depend on the style of mineralisation being targeted; however, stratigraphy and structure are fundamental controls on both ore types. Therefore, the ability to visualise the 3D geology of the entire basin is critical for the understanding of iron ore occurrences and their relationship to ore genesis of bedded iron ore mineralisation. However, due to the large size of the basin, generating a 3D geological model of the regional stratigraphy and structure has not been possible, or prioritised, primarily due to software limitations. Recent advances in implicit automated geological modelling presents an ideal opportunity to develop a 3D model of the entire Hamersley Basin. The innovative Loop software was used to model open source geological data (ie geological mapping, outcrop orientation data, and fault data) sourced from the Geological Survey of Western Australia. In addition to generating a 3D geological model, information such as stratigraphic thickness and fault offset information was extracted using the map2loop module and demonstrated its application to exploration targeting. This study demonstrates how a basin-wide 3D geological model was used to conduct a regional structural analysis of the Hamersley Basin. The results of this study provide opportunities for other prospective regions to be rapidly modelled in order to enhance the understanding of the geology and improve exploration targeting.

The major technological advances of the last 30 years have profoundly reshaped mining practices. Machines keep getting bigger while productivity continues to increase and manning levels drop. These trends will continue and the introduction of breakthrough technologies will continue to accelerate, driven by a continued focus on lowering the cost of production, improving the productivity of workers and machines, and ensuring safer working environments. At the same time, global consolidation of mining companies has impacted on technology development in a range of ways. There are many potential technologies being proposed, some already operating in Australian mines. The automation of underground load-haul-dump (LHD) trucks for example, continues the process of removing workers from the most dangerous operating environments. Global positioning systems fitted to draglines, fibre optic communication channels, and 400 tonne trucks are only some examples of what lies ahead. However, where we need to return focus is to the technology of management û which is also one of the two key interrelated themes of this keynote address. Have we, as an industry, adequately been able to keep up with technological advances? Are our management systems as competent as the machinery we employ? The other key theme is the processes of globalisation and consolidation. What are the impacts on our industry? What are the implications of these processes, particularly for the ways in which we manage our people? My paper is divided into several components:some comments on the coal industry and the dramatic restructuring we have seen in recent years; in the context of this restructuring, an overview of my company and its evolution; my views on the role of contractors; some comments on the consolidation also occurring in the mining machinery and equipment, technology and services sectors; some observations on two major areas of technology û drill and blast; and trucks, shovels and excavators; the implications of consolidation and new technology for our employees and management; and finally some comments on research programs.

Soil improvement technologies have been widely employed over the recent decades to overcome tunnelling problems in difficult grounds, their range of application growing proportionally to the technological development. The constant advancement in the different mechanical (flexible and more powerful equipment) and electronic (enhanced reliability and direct quality control) aspects of these technologies, fostered the confidence of engineers and tunnellers and, ultimately, allowed the entire tunnel industry to approach difficult excavations in a safer and cost effective manner.This paper outlines the main features of commercially available soil improvement techniques, with particular emphasis on permeation grouting and jet grouting. These two technologies, developed concurrently in Europe and Japan, and there customarily adopted in the design of underground structures, have known extensive and extreme applications worldwide in recent years. Case histories and current practice of soil improvement techniques, as they apply to tunnelling, are also rendered.

Stratiform lead-zinc mineralization in the Soldiers Cap Group and Kuridala Formation of the Mount Isa Inlier is closely associated with iron-rich sedimentary units or "iron formation", and has many similarities to the Broken Hill deposit in New South Wales. Both the Soldiers Cap Group and the Kuridala Formation have been intensively explored for deposits of this type since the early nineteen- seventies. A mineralized belt of at least eight significant prospects has been identified, of which the Pegmont deposit is the largest and best known example. In most cases the mineralized horizons contain banded galena and sphalerite within a gangue of predominantly quartz-garnet- pyroxene-amphibole rock, sometimes containing a variety of other metamorphic silicates, and apatite. Chemically, the mineralized horizons are distinguished by higher than usual levels of one or more of total Fe, MnO, CaO and P205. Interpretation of patterns of mineral- ization within the belt is based on the Pegmont deposit, where a model of base metal sulphide deposition within restricted basins of iron-rich chemical sediment has been developed (Stanton and Vaughan, 1979). Broadly, the model envisages the deposition of higher grade lead-rich mineralization in the basin centre position, lower grade zinc- rich mineralization in a basin intermediate position, and much weaker copper-rich mineralization in a basin edge position. These three positions reflect a laterally continuous arrangement of silicate microfacies within the original iron-rich sediment.

"All underground coal mines in Australia are required to develop a Spontaneous CombustionManagement Plan (SCMP). The New South Wales Government has developed a guideline (MDG1006) to assist operations to comply with this requirement. A reference document is alsosupplied with the guideline that describes the type of information that is needed for input to theplan, including identifying possible tests that can be used for propensity assessment. However,there is no clear indication of what program of sampling and testing is suffi cient to provide adefi nitive assessment of spontaneous combustion propensity prior to and during mining. This paper reviews the existing methods available for quantifying spontaneous combustion propensity and discusses the sampling requirements that are needed from exploration to mining. A new, more defi nitive method of spontaneous combustion testing is also presented that benchmarks coal self-heating performance from mine ambient temperature to thermal runaway. Examples of the eff ectiveness of this new test method for identifying and quantifying reactive pyrite in coal as well as quantifying the diff erence between dry and wet season conditions are provided in the paper."

The earliest suggestions that some metallic ore deposits might have resulted from seafloor volcanic exhalation seem to have been those of Elie de Beaumont in 1847 and Henry de la Beche in 1851. In 1885 Tinoco, and Bouglise and Cumenge, independently investigating-.the manto copper deposits of the Boleo district of Baja California, proposed that these had formed on the seafloor by precipitation from "hydrothermal submarine emanations". Some twenty years later the Japanese geologists Kukuchi and Tsujimoto (1904) put forward the idea that the Kuroko ore- bodies were seafloor volcanic sinter deposits and in 1919 this was re-affirmed by Ohashi. In 1909 the English geologists Thomas and MacAllister postulated a similar origin for some of the gold deposits of Mount Morgan in Queensland. Between the wars the great European economic geologists Niggli and Schneiderhohn both clearly recognized a class of seafloor hydrothermal deposits. The idea rose again immediately after the Second World War in a very clear statement by Hegeman in 1948, which was followed by contributions by Ehrenberg and Kraume and their co-workers on the submarine volcanic origin of the Meggen and Rammelsberg orebodies in 1954 and 1955 respectively. In 1955 the present writer, quite unaware of early or contemporary work on volcanic exhalative ore deposits, proposed a volcanic sedimentary/diagenetic origin for the stratiform base metal ores of SE Australia. In doing so the writer emphasized the probable importance of island arc volcanism, suggested that some "metallogenetic regions" of ancient terrains were in fact old island arc systems, that the composition of the ores might be related to the composition of the associated volcanic rocks and that such ores would be tied to volcanic stratigraphy. Ideas on relations between volcanism and stratiform ore genesis have thus been evolving over.a period of some 140 years and, beginning with the observations on Baja California in 1882, work round the rim of the Pacific has made an important contribution over a period of more than 100 years.

Although we have access to a wide range of sophisticated process design and improvement tools in combination with a significant range of case studies, the mineral resource industry still manages to be plagued by the negative publicity surrounding operating plant failures because they were neither smart nor safe, together with proposed projects that fail at the first or second hurdle. The general public and the finance industry are generally totally uniformed about projects that ramp-up to name plate capacity on time and on budget and even more so when ahead of schedule and under budget. As the saying goes, good news does not cut the mustard.The following is a summary of the author’s sometimes jaundiced view about why metallurgical plants do not live up to their technical and commercial expectations. In no way should the summary be construed as a negative reflection on the skills of the metallurgical profession. Rather, it is to be taken as a positive acknowledgement of those skills and is intended to highlight some of the major considerations that need to be assessed as a potential project transforms into a sustainable technical and commercial reality.While a considerable portion of the summary is directed at developing hydrometallurgical flowsheets, the general principles are equally important to all aspects of extractive metallurgy.For convenience, the summary covers the following five basic discussion points – project, people, process, patents and politicians.

Western Australia (WA) is currently the world’s largest iron ore producer, and mining of its huge reserves and resources of iron ore has become a critical part of the state’s economy and regional development. Iron ore exports from WA have reached 760 Mt/a, corresponding to shipping more than one Mt per turn-of-the-tide from the state’s ports. The iron ore sector dominates all commodities produced in WA, and in 2016 accounted for 77 per cent of the state’s royalty receipts, 56 per cent of mineral and petroleum exports (by value) and 50 per cent of mining industry employment. Expenditure on exploration for iron ore (including that for resource estimation and conversion to ore reserves) has declined markedly, from its record peak of $1100 M in 2012 to $280 M in 2016, placing it second after gold. The Ernest Henry Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit is hosted in a large dilation between two moderately dipping shear zones found in the footwall and hanging wall of the deposit. These shears are controlled by a large diorite intrusion to the north-east and south-west of the deposit, formed ~1660 Ma. A shear zone dubbed the ‘Interlens’ uncovered through underground workings truncates the main orebody into two lenses, and is hypothesized to have formed in conjunction with the Hanging Wall Shear Zone and Footwall Shear Zone. All three shears dip moderately to the SSE (50–140) from open cut exposures through to the current mining horizon approximately 800 m below the surface. Routine geological work and a capital drilling campaign has identified a significant flexure in these sub parallel ore bounding shears with increasing depth. A shift in shear orientation in the Interlens over approximately 100 m vertically from ~50° to the SSE to a steep, easterly trend (~85° to the east) is observed in both drill core and exposures in the underground workings. It is hypothesized the diorite intrusive to the south-west of the deposit controls the shear zone geometries at depth. The geometry of the Interlens mirrors the surface expression of the Proterozoic package of the orebounding shears to the south-west of the deposit, suggesting the surface geometries of the shear zones are consistent with depth. Additional drilling to explore the validity of this hypothesis is planned for the near future to better understand the structural controls on the Ernest Henry mineralisation with increasing depth.

In this paper, the technology of producing fluxed pellets by using hydrated lime as binder instead of bentonite was carried out. The properties of the two types green balls (0.8 per cent bentonite and 2.0 per cent hydrated lime) were as follows: drop numbers of 4.8 - 5.0 times/0.5 m, compressive strength of 19.7 - 24.2 N/pellet and thermal shock temperature of 280° - 385°, respectively, under the same conditions of 1.5 per cent coke, 1.45 basicity and balling at 8.5 per cent moisture for 13 min in disc pelletiser. Comparing with bentonite as binder, the compressive strength of fired pellets with hydrated lime is elevated by 13.8 per cent and climbs up to 3113 N/pellet under the following conditions: preheating at 1050°C for ten minutes and fi ring at 1300°C for 15 min. In the mean time, the hydrated lime also improves the metallurgical performance of fired pellets. The reduction index was enhanced from 68.6 - 70.6 per cent, RDI+3.15+ increased from 90.1 to 98.8 per cent and reduction swelling index dropped from 22.4 - 7.4 per cent, respectively. The mineral compositions and microstructure of fi red pellets shows that the fired pellets containing 2.0 per cent possess more calcium ferrite and magnesium ferrite and compact microstructure, leading to the higher compressive strength.

Kaolin used as an industrial mineral, especially that in the paper-manufacturing industry, must be of fine size, with high brightness, a low impurity content, and good crystal shape. However, in most kaolin deposits there are various impurities which have a very bad effect on the quality of the kaolin. Therefore, it is necessary to remove these impurities from kaolin ore. Owing to their similar surface properties, the separation of kaolin and iron oxide minerals, especially microkaolin and iron oxide minerals, has been regarded as difficult. The iron oxide minerals often intergrow with kaolin in fine and complicated forms, such as thin films, which make separation difficult. In order to overcome this difficulty, many workers have suggested various treatment methods and obtained great success. Based on research work by Fuerstenau (1980), Huang, Li and Hu (1984), Hui and Wei (1991), Shergold (1978), and Zambrana et al (1974), we have investigated a two-liquid flotation technique for iron removal from kaolin and obtained some success.

Record iron ore prices and a renaissance of infrastructure in the Pilbara have Flinders Mines poised to move from explorer/developer to an iron ore producer. The potential of the company’s Pilbara Iron Ore Project was first highlighted by the announcement of Rio Tinto’s Caliwingina North deposit to the north and the Fortescue Metals group’s Serenity deposit in the southeast. The success of Flinders Mines’ exploration has been based on incorporating landscape studies into an existing geological framework, and using this to understand the iron-rich materials that were emplaced during the Tertiary. The development of the Delta and Eagle deposit resource models highlights this process. There are three main mineralisation styles at the project; detrital iron, channel iron and bedded iron deposits. They have textural and mineralogical similarities with comparative deposits in the region. Gaining an insight into the geological processes unique to detrital iron deposits and more distal channel iron deposits has been important to understanding the geometallurgy of the mineralisation. The model sits comfortably with other regional oregenesis models and allows a contextual framework to be developed around the timing of deposition of the Fe-rich detritus and pisolitic nodules that dominate the deposits. The exploration model also allows Flinders to explore more effectively for bedded iron mineralisation developed prior to, and since the development of the Tertiary weathering landscape.
