The application of high technology to monitor and control fire life safety, critical functionality in tunnels and underground spaces generally has progressed at an ever accelerating rate over the past decade. Today these systems comprise some of the most complex and little understood aspects of the tunnel/underground facility construction industry, with this area being perceived as high risk comprising impenetrably complex ‘black box’ technology covered in blinking LEDs. This paper will seek to explode some urban myths and common misconceptions associated with such systems, providing its intended audience with a review of what all this technology comprises and where the real risks lie in its delivery lie.The author contends (and looks to support such contention via this paper) that by applying baseline project and risk management processes to the procurement of this widely misunderstood black box technology, the quality of the final outcome can be much improved, driving innovation, reducing both cost and significantly mitigating delivery risk.CITATION:Taylor, G M, 2014. OxianaÆs Sepon Copper Operation (part of the combined Sepon Gold and Copper Operation) is located in Savannaket Province, in southern central Lao PDR. The site is relatively remote, being some five hours inland from the Laos/Thailand border crossing on the Mekong River. The copper processing plant was designed to treat 1.3 Mtpa ROM ore to produce 60 000 tpa of copper cathode. Commissioning of the processing plant was completed in mid March 2005 with ramp up completed in January 2006 with 5260 tonnes of cathode harvested in this month. The focus of this paper is on SeponÆs unique grinding circuit. The entire grinding circuit is operated at highly acidic conditions, adding a number of different operational issues over and above those normally associated with grinding circuits. It became evident early in the ramp up, that reaching design mill throughput of 170 dry tonnes per hour with the original design would be challenging, coupled with the realisation that ceramic grinding media consumption had been underestimated. In order to lift the overall throughput of the processing plant, a significant continuous improvement process has been implemented within the grinding circuit to lift this key unitÆs production capacity. This presentation will focus on the key areas that have been addressed in the 12 month ramp up period and highlight areas for future work. Results to date have shown this improvement process to be very successful, with throughput rates in excess of 200 tph regularly achieved.

In mineral processing industries grinding is the most energy-consuming process. A tumbling mill is an essential grinding equipment widely used for particle size reduction. Power consumption, impact forces and trajectory paths are critical parameters for characterising a tumbling mill to determine grinding efficiency. The effect of lifters and mill speed plays a vital role in such parameters. However, most of the studies ignore the impact of the lifter and do not investigate the effect of slurry dynamics on charge motion. The focus of the present work is to prepare a computational model that can accurately predict the complex multi-phase dynamics of charge particles, air and slurry inside the mill using a model that couples computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the discrete element method (DEM). The details of impact forces with lifter profiles and mill speed variations will be refined even further using the CFD-DEM coupling approach. The slurry-air free surface is modelled using the volume of fluid (VOF) method, and the charge motion is modelled using the DEM. The phases are coupled using the interface momentum exchange between the charge and the fluid slurry. The coupled model is validated against experimental results from the positron-emitting particle tracking (PEPT) data. The validated model compares the effect of slurry content on charge dynamics with the dry DEM model. The presence of slurry is observed to dampen the tangential and shear contact forces.

Based on a principle developed at a South African Mine, the CSIR developed a device with which the alignment of guide rails in mine shafts could be measured. Originally the technique could only be used to obtain guide misalignment values at the bunton sets. At the time this was considered adequate since it was assumed that guide realignment could only be done at the support points anyway. The technology was developed further and now it is possible to obtain æcontinuousÆ guide profiles from the measurements. Software was developed with which a guide realignment schedule can be drafted and the shape of the realigned guides can be predicted. A measuring system based on this technology is being used to conduct guide alignment measurements in shafts. The data is then analysed and a realignment schedule is recommended in consultation with the mine. Such a schedule may be prioritised so that the worst sections in the shaft are dealt with first. The measurement hardware and analysis software are described. Examples are presented that illustrate the principles and highlight measurement errors. A case study illustrates measurements recorded in a newly equipped shaft. A repeat measurement, 18 months later, shows the effect of recommended realignment as well as the change in guide alignment over this period.

The Graham Farmer Freeway Project in Perth, Western Australia, is the largest urban infrastructure project ever carried out in the State. At a project cost of over $360 million, it also ranks as one of the largest in Australia and is even large by world class standards. The project provides a much needed east-west freeway bypass around the CBD of Perth, linking the Great Eastern Highway in the east with the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeway system in the west. The Bypass will have 6.5 kilometres of freeway, a major bridge over the Swan River, several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses, dual use paths, interchanges and flyover bridges and a rail tunnel. The whole project is being carried out over a four-year time frame, due to be complete and open to traffic in June 2000. The project has been divided into two stages, with Stage 1 including the 1.63 kilometre long Northbridge Tunnel, the subject of this paper.

Government established and financed the NZ Steel Investigating Co in 1960. Its investigations showed that a steel industry was feasible and desirable based uponNorth Island titanomagnetite ironsands, and charted a route for its establishment. The initial processing used post-1945 preheating and prereduction developments, but later innovative improvements created what was essentially a new New Zealand technology. Of the North Island titanomagnetite deposits: the small ones at Waipipi were best made available for export; those at Kawhia and Taharoa were too remote for the economic siting of a mill; that at Raglan proved too small; while at Waikato North Head three times the requirement of 50 million tons of concentrate were located in two sand areas averaging 18 per cent titanomagnetite. Economic studies showed that a South Auckland site would be ideal, close to New Zealand's biggest market. The mill site, on a basalt flow at Glenbrook, was located by a half-day's fieldwork - near both the Waikato North Head deposit, and a railhead for bringing in Waikato coal, etc, and taking out steel products.   This development was one of several since World War II which altered significantly the lives and homes of New Zealanders (others were natural gas, oil, geothermal power, epithermal gold, aluminium, opencastable lignite, etc). All had the essential ingredients of the highest government backing, direct or indirect government finance, and first-class New Zealand scientific and engineering skills (eg to create new technologies). Not one such project failed.

Christmas Island "C"-grade phosphate consists essentially of the minerals crandallite and millisite. Although containing over 25% P205, this material is not suitable for the manufacture of water-soluble phosphate fertilizers by conventional processes, because of its high iron and aluminium content Cover 25% total R203). In order to produce a water-soluble fertilizer from such material it is necessary to separate the iron and aluminium from the phosphate, which must report in a product acceptable as a fertilizer. Several processes were studied in detail. The first used ion exchange for dissolution and separation and yielded diammonium phosphate; processing costs were high compared with conven- tional processes based on apatite. The latter processes have basically simple flowsheets and cost of processing is low when compared with the costs of the raw materials. The need to separate iron and aluminium from the phosphate introduces additional complexity into the treatment of the C-grade material. The higher processing costs might be justified, however, if alumina could be produced as a byproduct. Two proposed processes have been developed in which: 1. hydrochloric acid is used for dissolution, and solvent extrac- tion for the separation of ferric chloride from phosphoric acid. Aluminium chloride is precipitated and hydrolysed to recover alumina and hydrochloric acid. 2. sulphuric acid is used for dissolution and aluminium is crystallized as ammonium alum. The phosphate is produced as an ammonium phosphate-sulphate fertilizer. High purity alumina can be obtained by treatment of the recrystallized alum. The technology of these processes is described, and their broad economics discussed briefly.\

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11 km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River in the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (eg Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the æTechnical FeasibilityÆ phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralisation/ precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru SA, and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the AMD could be sufficiently treated to be potentially used to supplement the drinking water supply of Lima, and for agricultural (eg irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for implementation of the full-scale treatment facility at the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

Tracking plant and personnel in underground environments provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including increasing safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control, and in the future monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques for wireless tracking are to use radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques, and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques have poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, but most current equipment does not realise the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the wireless ad-hoc system for positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines. WASP has been licensed for sporting applications and has delivered encouraging results in early trials for a surface and an underground mining application. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at surveyed fixed locations within the mine, and tags attached to plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging from 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of initial testing in an underground mine that shows that the system achieves high ranging accuracy, hence localisation accuracy.

Coal mining is recognised globally as a hazardous activity, and as a result operates under high levels of regulatory and public scrutiny while managing a workforce operating in a high-risk environment. Mining companies have developed sophisticated risk assessment procedures, management systems and personnel competency requirements that facilitate the safety and health of employees, and Australia is a world leader in coal mining safety and health.RISKGATE is an Australian Coal Association Research Program funded online platform that delivers broad cross-industry knowledge about current practice in the identification, assessment and management of coal mining risk. Centennial Coal has engaged with the RISKGATE program, managed by the University of Queensland’s Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, since its inception in 2010, and contributed topic experts to many modules, including underground topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, and inrush).In 2013, Centennial Coal experienced significant unexpected strata failure at the Mandalong mine without any personal injury or fatality. This paper presents a case study in the application of RISKGATE to management of this unwanted event, the steps that were implemented, the information that was sourced and the contribution that RISKGATE made to the final outcomes. The Australian coal industry is encouraged to embrace our knowledge platform, and to also openly share processes and practical outcomes that result from integration of RISKGATE in mining operations.CITATION:Harris, J, Turner, J and Kirsch, P, 2014. Metallurgical accounting is key to the control and production planning process of any mining operation. This is even more crucial for complex operations involving mining, concentration, smelting, refining and marketing. The tracking of multiple metal product and contaminant components through the operation can improve process predictability and inventory management. Appropriate use can be made of æhigh quality dataÆ for strategic reserve utilisation, mining operations, milling operations, etc. This information enables the optimisation of all aspects of the mining and processing operations. This case study discusses a metal balance implementation for WMCÆs Olympic Dam operations; a large integrated mining, concentration and refining operation, which used an existing off the shelf statistical data reconciliation package developed for the oil industry. It was extended to track and balance the metal co-products across the entire integrated mining, mineral processing and refining plant. The key benefits discussed are tight integration with existing data collection systems, formalisation of previously informal processes, and leveraging the development and support available for a widely used package. The project provided a solution for the site metallurgical balance spanning the mine and processing plant. The solution facilitates a bridge between the planning and production worlds, using a common data model across the site.

Recycling and decarbonisation current metallurgical processes is key for our planet’s future and in both cases, digital twinning will play an important role. However, the various modelling techniques being used for digital twinning require a lot of input values on variables such as viscosities, diffusion coefficients and surface energies that need to be known as a function of temperature, atmosphere and composition, but which are not widely available, such as in databases, for molten slag phases. The need for more accurate data on physical slag properties is clear and will be extremely relevant for making more realistic and quantitative simulations. Some of these properties are difficult to determine, which is inherent to the very high pyrometallurgical temperatures. Therefore, this work focuses on some aspects related to determining electrical conductivities, viscosities and surface tensions of slags via a combined experimental-modelling method. Besides experimental work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can be used to investigate oxidic slag physical properties. With MD simulations, one can follow the time evolution of a system (consisting of atoms or molecules) by integrating Newton’s equation of motion. The input for an MD simulation mainly consists of a force field as well as initial positions, velocities and mass of each atom. The determination of the transport properties in existing literature of MD simulations in oxidic systems, is typically based on incorrect assumptions. For example, to determine the ionic conductivity, the frequently-used Einstein-Stokes equation fails to take into account all ionic types and neglects correlated motion. Furthermore, the viscosity determination via the Einstein-Stokes formula also assumes independent motion of the different ions. This paper gives a brief overview of the opportunities and challenges related to the use of MD simulations for oxidic slag systems.

Shear strength parameters of compacted clay liners are needed to analyse the stability of mine waste dumps containing compacted clay liners as sealing layers for potentially acid forming waste rock. A representative clay sample was supplied by McArthur River Mine from the mine site in the Northern Territory, Australia, with an average as-supplied gravimetric moisture content of about 13.6%. The clay was compacted in a 100 mm by 100 mm direct shear box at the as-supplied moisture content to a dry density of 1.85 t/m3, representing the field compaction specification adopted by the mine. To determine the peak and ultimate shear strengths of the compacted clay, single-stage direct shear testing was carried out at nominal initial normal stresses of 50 kPa, 100 kPa and 200 kPa, representing shallow depths of burial in the North Overburden Emplacement Facility of about 2.8 m, 5.6 m and 11.1 m, respectively (assuming a waste rock wet unit weight of 18 kN/m3). Three shearing rates of 1 mm/min (rapid), 0.1 mm/min (intermediate) and 0.01 mm/min (slow) were applied to study the influence of shearing rate on shear strength. In addition, the development of a residual shear plane was tested by reversal and re-shearing in the direct shear box. In the first shearing, the peak and ultimate shear strengths are determined. The normal load was then removed and the box rewound to its starting position. The normal load was then re-applied and the specimen re-sheared. Two reversals were applied to each specimen, and it was found that there was no significant reduction in shear strength. Finally, based on a range of shear strengths obtained in the laboratory for McArthur River Mine clay and other materials by various laboratories over time, shear strength parameters for the compacted clay were recommended for use by the mine.CITATION:Xu, Y, Williams, D J and Hacker, J, 2018. Bauxite Resources Limited is grade drilling in its Western Australian Darling Range tenements to firm up resource definition and to develop mine plans. The Darling Range bauxite is generally in shallow deposits with minimum overburden. In the northern tenements, the ore is characterised by a higher silica layer which may extend from 0.5 to 1.5 m below, which high grade bauxite is found to a depth of four to 7 m. When grade drilling samples are taken, every 0.5 m and the recovered sample is weighed, logged and bagged. To eliminate splitting errors, the whole sample over the short interval is pulverised. Twinning holes variations are observed when using various drill rigs. Diamond core has been shown to give close to 100 per cent recovery and grades have been verified by digging bulk samples. As such, diamond core is used as the reference. It is intended to include sonic drilling as an alternative to diamond cores. This presentation details and attempts to explain the reasons for the observed variations in the various drilling methods used by Bauxite Resources Limited. In the course of the development of the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) in the 1980s an expression was introduced in the public discussion on environment and development that influenced the international and national policies of the last 20 years in all areas: sustainable development. The UN decided in 1992 to implement a program with the Agenda 21 which contains the demand for developing indicators for sustainable development. In this context an indicator is understood as a quantitative or qualitative measure that can be measured or described throughout time and which moreover is able to depict the current status and changes. In order to enable for a simple holistic assessment of sustainable development, highly aggregated indicators are required, which integrate the criteria identified as relevant within a framework to be defined. In the presented paper, sustainability indicators for the mining industry are developed that account for the allowances of the sustainable development concept and the Agenda 21. The indicators are quantifiable and traceable through time so that developments can be traced and assessed. Furthermore, the indicators account for the multidimensional aspect of sustainable development. They are designed to allow for the integration of several dimensions in one indicator. The premises that are underlying the development of the indicators are the minimisation of negative impacts on the environment and society while simultaneously considering the maximisation of social and economic factors. Moreover, the participative momentum that is part of the sustainability idea is safeguarded in explicitly integrating the social acceptance of certain measures into the assessment. The indicators presented are based on the logical combination of statements through the use of Boolean algebra. Starting with basic statements for which the logical value is oriented on the sustainability paradigm, complex multidimensional statements can be constructed and assessed.

Recycling steel plant by-products is a critical issue for achieving both environmental and economic sustainability of integrated steel plants. A key steel plant by-product stream is dust from basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS), which can be recycled back to the BOS vessel as iron units and to aid slag formation. The major limitations for its recycling are zinc and the uncertainty in zinc speciation of the dust. This uncertainty affects the amount of dust recycled and how it interacts with the slag during processing. BOS dust in stockpiles can undergo self-sintering reactions that oxidise the iron-bearing components. As this occurs, zinc (or oxide) may combine with iron oxides to form a zinc-iron spinel solid solution phase. Knowing which zinc-bearing species are present in the BOS dust is a key aspect in understanding and developing an efficient recycling process for the dust. To overcome difficulties associated with phase identification in the BOS dust (both fresh and selfsintered), particularly the magnetite-zinc ferrite spinel solid solution using X-ray diffraction (XRD) / scanning electron microscopy (SEM) / energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high end characterisation tools, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Mössbauer spectroscopy, were also used. Such an approach allowed improved phase identification of key zinc- and iron-bearing phases that were not previously resolvable. The zinc in fresh BOS dust was mostly present as extremely fine separate particles of zinc oxide, attached to the iron particles. These extremely fine particles were <10 nm in size. Additionally, a small amount of zinc ferrite was also identified within the sample (most likely contained within a magnetite-zinc ferrite spinel solid solution). However, the zinc in the self-sintered BOS dust, was found to be present entirely in a magnetite-zinc ferrite spinel solid solution. While this spinel phase had been previously identified by XRD, it was not clear that it contained zinc. The Mössbauer results provided definitive evidence of zinc within the spinel phase.

The Latrobe Valley is located approximately 150 kms east of Melbourne. Within a very small area there are 3 large brown coalmines and associated power stations, 3 large towns, and numerous smaller towns in the vicinity. The mines have been generating power for Melbourne and surrounds for the last 100 years, with two of the mines being owned and operated by the Victorian Government (State Electricity Commission of Victoria) prior to privatisation in the 1990s. All three mines were privatised with the expectation that the mine voids would be filled with water to become pit lakes, as the final landform/rehabilitation solution (Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry, Teague and Catford, 2016). It could be argued that until relatively recently, this was largely expected, by government and industry, to be the rehabilitation solution for managing the two key risks associated with the sites:  The geotechnical stability of the mine pits.  The prevention of fire – through covering coal batters with water. Transitioning away from mining economies requires collaborative, regional, innovative thinking with a multitude of stakeholders, from a wide range of government departments, industry, First Nations people and broader community. Closure planning and rehabilitation activities require a range of skills and experience, such as, closure planning, various scientific and engineering disciplines (pit water quality modelling, geochemical modelling, cover design, landform design, contaminated site etc), civil engineering, demolition etc. Some of these skills are similar, such as financial modelling, stakeholder engagement, contract and project management. But the majority are different to those required during the operational phase of a mine. These closure skills can also be lacking within government, with Departments more familiar with monitoring and compliance activities associated with operational facilities. Some key aspects that appear to be critical to planned successful closure are:  Collaborative regional and localised planning, with industry, government, community, First Nations and other industry, business leaders and entrepreneurs all involved in providing a smooth transition away from mining.  Well-defined and known regulatory pathways to achieve mine licence relinquishment assists in encouraging investment.  Appropriately skilled and experienced government and industry personnel.  Mining companies, who are committed to closure planning and provisioning from the earliest point in project planning.  Mine employees who are appropriately skilled and experienced in mine closure planning and implementation with access to all the relevant technical expertise required for the project. Areas like the Ruhr Valley in Germany provide good some examples of smooth processes that facilitate mine economies transition into new economies (World Resources Institute (WRI), 2021).

This paper presents a research project referring to the stability of submerged walls of open pit mines and the actual state of development. Obviously the slope stability analysis is always a rather complex problem, because it is difficult to reduce the problem to a design scheme and to define the available in situ soil strength. Especially the design of submerged slopes represents a problem. The state-of-the-art slope stability analysis is based on a simplified modelling of slope failure and soil behaviour and with this predicted stable slope inclinations of sand slopes below water-table are less then half the angle of internal friction. Slope angles calculated like that canÆt satisfy the mining companies. One of the problems that have to be solved is the reliable determination of the long-term stability of non-cohesive, submerged slopes, which is not only dependant on geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters of the subsoil, but is also significantly influenced by how the slopes are made. The research project points at the relations between mining and geotechnical engineering with the main aim to find a more suitable stability analysis which takes both soil behaviour and mining influences into account.

"A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company. The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin &amp; Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal.
