Iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits account for the majority of current world iron ore production and consist of three classes: unenriched primary iron formation with typically 25 to 45 wt per cent Fe; martite-goethite ore formed by supergene processes, with abundant hydrous iron oxides containing 60 to 63 wt per cent Fe; and high-grade hematite ores thought to be of hypogene or metamorphic origin overprinted by subsequent supergene enrichment with 60 to 68 wt per cent Fe.Individual iron ore deposits range from a few millions of tonnes to over two billion tonnes at >64 wt per cent Fe, although most are within the range of 200 to 500 Mt. In the Hamersley Province of Western Australia, martite-goethite ores are largely developed in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, although high (>0.08 per cent P) phosphorous mineralisation is also well developed in the stratigraphically higher Brockman Iron Formation. Whilst the vast majority of high-grade microplaty hematite ore is best developed in the Brockman Iron Formation, this paper provides the first textural evidence of locally significant microplaty hematite mineralisation in the Nammuldi Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, in the Chichester Ranges at the Christmas Creek, Cloud Break and Mount Nicholas prospects. Petrographic studies have identified a high-grade Fe texture composed of nanometre scale plates of hematite in mineralised sections of primary microplaty hematite deposits in the Pilbara and elsewhere, well below the normal depth of weathering or dehydration. The population of nanometre to micrometre scale hematite plates is interpreted to represent various stages of nucleation, crystallisation and progressive growth of hematite from the primary ore-forming fluid in areas that were once iron-rich carbonates or silicates in the BIF.

This paper reviews methods for grade estimation in short-term mine planning for block caving. Two particular tools are used: Ordinary Kriging and Simple Kriging with moving averages. It is also considered the influence of draw characteristics on the grade estimation process. Reference is made to mine case study data and analysis. These demonstrate that operational grade estimation is not a trivial process. It must take into consideration: the grade variability (in terms of ore and dilution), sampling interval, geological and geotechnical characteristics, geometrical layout and draw characteristics. Significant improvements appear possible in short-term planning if variogram analysis, as well as kriging methodologies, are introduced into the operational grade estimation process.

A sampling and measurement program was undertaken on the reaction shaft of the Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. The object of the work was to provide information to validate a mathematical model of the burner and reaction shaft. Samples and measurements were undertaken through the burner inspection ports and the South East (SE) shaft sampling port about half way down the reaction shaft. Samples were collected to enable the calculation of particle loading of shaft gases, or sizing and chemical analysis of the partly-combusted feed, and the preparation of polished sections. Measurements were made of the temperature and sulfur dioxide content of the atmosphere, as well as plume velocity.To implement the program it was necessary to design and construct the following specialised items of equipment. For use at the burner inspection ports: a cup sampler for obtaining samples below the burners (temperature, solids loading and samples for characterisation).For use at the SE shaft sampling port and also at the settler level: trough sampler (plume definition and samples), isokinetic sampler (used as a velocity probe in this work), temperature probe (temperature traverses across the shaft), and sulfur dioxide probe (SO2 measurements across the shaft).The design of the sampling and measuring equipment is described, and examples are cited of the types of information obtained. The problems arising from working in a hot environment with molten or sticky particles are discussed.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

Ranger Uranium Mine is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia and surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park (Figure 1). The mining operation is currently producing about 1500 tonnes of uranium oxide annually, as well as considerable volumes of waste rock, low grade ore and tailings. The rehabilitation of the project should ensure that the radioactive mill tailings and other contaminants remain contained for at least 200 years, as required by the existing guidelines (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987). The present uranium mining operation is regulated by the Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy who must refer to the Environmental Requirements when considering regulatory options. The strength and deformation properties of a rock mass are important parameters influencing the design of civil and mining excavations or structures. The mechanical behaviour of jointed rock masses are controlled by the characteristics of discontinuities and the strength of intact rock bridges between discontinuities. To date, analytical, empirical and experimental methods have not captured the key mechanisms controlling the mechanical properties of actual rock masses with non-persistent joints. The emergence of the synthetic rock mass (SRM) in 2007 provides a promising approach for this purpose. In this paper a rock mass with non-persistent joints is analysed with the SRM model based on PFC3D. The influence of joint geometrical parameters on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), rock mass deformation modulus (Em) and failure mode is studied. Joint parameters include joint orientation, persistency, spacing and step angle. Prismatic numerical samples with dimensions 300 mm × 150 mm × 50 mm were generated and a sensitivity analysis of each joint parameter on UCS and Em was undertaken. The results show that of the parameters tested, joint orientation has the greatest influence on UCS. Minimum UCS occurs when the angle between the major principal stress and joint surface is approximately 60°. The joint step angle was found to have a significant effect on failure mode and a joint step angle of 90° is the most favourable joint orientation for step-path failure. The importance of joint step angle is highlighted in the discovery of a failure mode bifurcation point at joint step angles of 60° and 90° for joint orientations of 75° and 90°, respectively. For these parameters the failure mode transitions from block rotation to a new failure mode where the coalescence of cracks results in the formation of new small regularised blocks.

The Central Coal Mining Research Institute has developed the MAE acoustic emission monitoring system, the BD4-1 portable acoustic emission monitor and the MRB rock burst monitoring system. In the MAE system there is an IBM-PLAT, a receiver and 16 channels and the investigating range is 100 m. The main functions are detecting acoustic events from the working faces, periodically making statistics, prints, displays and storing of the results, and performing the off-line process such as drawing the curves of acoustic activity. The BD4-1 instrument has four channels, it works for more than 24 hours continuously, and keeps the data for more than 30 days after power tum-off. The BD4-1 is suited to the monitoring for a long or a short time as a fixed point where the system is invalid, especially to the monitoring of the acoustic activity promoted by the blasting. There is an IBM-PC/AT, a receiver and 16 channels spread 10 km in the system MRB. The system could on-line collect microseismic events throughout the whole mine, calculate the source location and the energy, and off-line draw the seismic activity draft of time-based or distribution in space. In practice, the forecasting is successful by using the acoustic emission and microseismic monitoring system and the portable instrument.

The Selwyn gold-copper operation is wholly owned and operated by the Arimco mining group. The mine is located 150 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. The primary extraction method for the gold-copper 251 orebody is by sub level open stoping. Secondary extraction is from the mass blasting of the remaining crown and rib pillars. The final mass blast of the 251 orebody occurred in December 1993. This paper details the design and execution of that firing.

Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. he Melbourne City Link project will complete a missing link between two existing major freeways in the Melbourne road network, providing a much needed bypass of the Central Business District for through traffic. The project, which is being financed under a BOOT arrangement with the Victorian State Government, involves the upgrading of significant stretches of existing freeway and the construction of new sections involving viaducts and tunnels. The tunnel sections, which are the focus of this paper, are beneath residential and business areas, the Yarra River, the Royal Botanic Gardens and significant sporting facilities where surface construction would be either impossible or unacceptable (reference Figure 1). The shorter, 1.62 km west bound Domain tunnel comprises two cut and cover sections through Olympic Park then the Yarra River, the driven section of 0.68 km length and exits through a common cut and cover section with the east bound tunnel under St Kilda Road and Sturt Street. The longer 3.76 km east bound tunnel commences at the common portal, through cut and cover under St Kilda Road then 2.86 km of driven section before exiting at a cut and cover section at Burnley. The longer Burnley tunnel has an access and ventilation shaft at approximately its mid point.

Early efforts to control the dust necessarily produced during dry crushing operations, took the form of venturis at loading chutes and other places where dust was most evident. These venturis discharged to the atmosphere and for obvious reasons were not very satisfactory.Attempts to collect the dust drawn off by the venturis, using dry cyclones, were not successful, the cyclones catching only the coarser particles. Further, no satisfactory method of continuously discharging the dust catchment was evolved. Water sprays were also used, and will be referred to later.In 1940, a single discharge fan of 3,000-4,000 cu. ft. per minute capacity, was installed to draw the dust-laden air from the Symons crushers and ·screening sections with their attendant conveyors. Suction was through two 15 in. ducts which branched off into 10 off-takes situated over the conveyers at points of discharge from crushers and screens.A dry cyclone was installed in front of the fan, which exhausted into a bag-house.The cyclone suffered from the defects of the smaller units mentioned earlier. When the collected dust reached a certain level in the cone, no more collection would take place until the cone was emptied. This objectionable feature was overcome by introducing a jet of water ahead of the cyclone. The water and dust collected overflowed a weir and were pumped to the mill.

Gold mineralisation at Wapolu lies within an exposed arcuate zone at the decollement contact between a basement dome of high grade metamorphics and an overlying ophiolite sequence. This contact was originally a thrust fault which has since become a decollement zone for gravity sliding in association with basement doming. Hydrothermal models for the gold mineralisation postulate an epithermal system in which fluids were channelled up the decollement with boiling of those fluids causing hydrothermal brecciation and subsequent gold deposition. The alteration assemblages, fluid inclusion data and geochemistry indicate that the upper levels of the system are exposed.

Ore selection is generally a highly subjective task, with emphasis on producing product with a consistent target grade matching a perceived market requirement. A composite selection criterion ‘Comp’ (a linear function of the grade vector) can be used to maximise ore tonnage at a specified target grade (in Fe and contaminants) extractable from a block model. The blocks correspond to the selective mining units, with grades interpolated from diamond drill hole data. An iterative procedure has been developed to identify the coefficients and cut-off value for the composite function ‘Comp’, maximising potential ore tonnage at target grade.Commonly, target grade is predetermined by marketing; however, there is no guarantee that maximising ore tonnage at a specified target grade maximises the potential value of the mine. If the value of ore could be expressed as a linear function of the grade components, then these coefficients would be appropriate for the selection criterion ‘Comp’. The cut-off value for ‘Comp’ would correspond to the marginal cost of production; all blocks with a ‘Comp’ score above the cut-off would be classified as ore; and the cumulative grade of these ore blocks would be the average product grade over the life of the mine.Unfortunately, no such value function for iron ore is generally available. Methods for estimating the value function are discussed, using the spot price and sensitivities based either upon operational tolerances for Fe and the contaminants or upon published price differentials. This approach has been applied to an anonymous Pilbara deposit with about one million blocks averaging 1.1 kt. It is shown how the optimal target grade, cut-off grade and maximum tonnage can all be explored as a function of marginal cost and iron ore price. Alternatively, given marginal cost and an iron ore price, the effects of changing the tolerances (and therefore the relative costs of the contaminants) can also be explored.It is suggested this procedure can enable informed decision-making for an iron ore mine. Rather than setting final policy for the entire life-of-mine, the method enables target grades and tonnage estimates to be revised by re-computation as the mine life proceeds to recognise changes in market conditions and knowledge about the resource.It should be emphasised that this paper is concerned with ore selection rather than ore sequencing. Appropriate ore selection is a necessary but not sufficient condition for maximising value. Having identified the set of blocks that potentially maximise value, the sequence in which they are mined will present a trade-off between producing at constant grade and extracting high value ore early. The sequencing issue is not considered here. It is shown that optimum ore selection for an open pit mine is independent of any consideration of discount rates, although ore sequencing will depend upon the time value of money if the product grade is to vary across time.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. "Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study. Geophysical borehole logging, which measures various in situ petrophysical parameters, can be used not only for qualitative interpretation such as strata correlation, but also for geotechnical assessment through quantitative data analysis. It can play an important role for safe and productive mining operations. Here we provide various applications of geophysical logs such as the estimation of the strength of intact rock or unconfined (or uniaxial) compressive strength (UCS), automated lithological/geotechnical interpretation, geophysical strata rating and orebody delineation and grade estimation. These derived parameters could provide input to control of geological and geotechnical models. This could assist site geologists and planning and production geotechnical engineers to predict and manage mining conditions on an ongoing basis. Both conventional logs such as density, natural gamma and sonic, and less common logging data such as full waveform sonic and televiewer data are examined for different applications. Although the examples used here are mainly for coal mining applications, but they can be equally applied to hard rock metalliferous mining such as iron ore mining.

The Jameson Cell is a high intensity flotation device, which utilises induced air from the atmosphere. It was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines and Professor Graeme Jameson of the University of Newcastle in the 1980s. It is proven to generate fine bubbles, in the order of 300 to 500 ¦m, in a high intensity, high shear and compact zone contained in the downcomer. This aerated mixture exits the downcomer into the pulp zone, which is the quiescent mineral and gangue separation zone. A number of Australian base metal flotation circuits feature a reverse flotation stage at the head of the circuit. Testwork and plant operating data has shown that the use of a Jameson Cell in the prefloat cleaner application has further improved prefloat gangue recovery and selectivity. Operation of a Jameson Cell in a carbonaceous/pyrite prefloat cleaner duty at the Mt Isa copper concentrator increased copper recovery and reduced pyrite in the copper concentrate. Testwork at Zinifex Century Zinc Mine showed a decrease in zinc losses by the utilisation of Jameson Cell prefloat cleaner. Appraisal of a Jameson Cell in a scalping role within the Mt Isa Copper Concentrator indicated significant benefits could be achieved.

In order to assess whether polysaccharide depressants are strongly or weakly and reversibly bound to the surface of talc, a series of experiments was conducted on New York talc in which the floatability of the talc in a microflotation cell was determined. The talc was conditioned in solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or guar gum in 10-2 ionic strength Ca(NO3)2 or Mg(NO3)2. The talc was then washed with four successive aliquots of water, or cation solution, to try to remove the polymer and the flotation response of the talc was assessed. CMCs of different charge (DS) were used to assess the effect of charge on the strength of bonding. The results show that CMC and guar gum could be removed to a large extent from the talc surface by washing with water (the floatability was restored), however very little could be removed from the surface by washing with cation solution. The higher charge CMC was easier to remove from the talc planes in the absence of cations than the lower charge CMC. Thus CMC bonding to talc has been shown to be irreversible or very slowly reversible only if cations are present, implying that cations are necessary to keep the polymer bound to the surface of the planes to effect depression. The presence of ions in solution also had the effect of maintaining surface coverage of the talc by guar gum.

The mining industry is relatively niche and complex compared to other global industries in its safety and operating environment. Whilst some of the technology required to decarbonise the mining industry will emerge from the mass market (eg batteries, energy storage solutions and renewable power generation) where exogeneous external investment and innovation will drive supply, bespoke applications such as material movement will be constrained by industry limitations. Underground load and haul equipment burns the majority portion of underground mine diesel, and typically 25 per cent of scope one and two emissions. Transitioning away from incumbent diesel engines offers a considerable health benefit to all mine workers, as well as decarbonisation achievements, and through trials there is emerging evidence of more productive equipment and realistic expectations of lower operating costs of fleet. However, new equipment and material movement systems that support these industry goals are currently approached with caution due to the pivotal role they play in delivering productivity goals, and the lack of experiential data and certainty to mitigate the supplier development risk during this technology transition period, where all resources are required to meet a booming industry. A group of mining companies and suppliers have the aligned aim to accelerate the understanding and availability of heavy haulage mobile equipment through collaboratively piloting equipment and working with suppliers and each other to aggregate market demand, encourage investment and resolve the mine design and technology choices through their involvement in the Electric Mine Consortium (EMC). This paper will outline the major challenges the industry must overcome in sourcing and adopting a zero-diesel particulate and zero-emission mine, drawn from cases and insights across ten EMC mining company members.

DeBeers Canada Mining Inc (DeBeers) recently submitted an Environmental Assessment (EA) for its proposed Snap Lake Diamond Mine located in Northwest Territories, Canada. As part of the EA process, a site water quality management plan must be developed. Plan development requires an integrated approach such that the key factors influencing water quality can be identified and managed to minimise potential impact. A system model was therefore developed to simulate the site-wide water quality conditions and mass loadings to the principal environmental receptor of concern, Snap Lake, during operations and post-closure. Requirements of the simulation included integrating hydrology, geochemistry, hydrogeology and site management practices in a dynamic way. A unique feature of the site was the need to accommodate a complex flow system that included a feedback loop between lake water and mine water. A system model was constructed using the GoldSim software package that integrated on-site water quality and flow measurements, as well as results from independent groundwater flow and geochemical modelling efforts. The GoldSim model simulated concurrently the movement of 39 solutes through the subsurface mine and surface facilities. Solute sources considered included four different waste rock and tailings types, explosives use in the mine, treatment plant discharge, and recycled process water for dust suppression. Separate solubility constraints were identified for different regions of the flow system (eg underground mine; treatment facility; surface water bodies). Kinetic test data were used to derive temperature-dependent rate constants for use in calculating mass inputs from surface sources such as waste rock piles. The model generated water quality estimates over time for a variety of management scenarios at several potential discharge locations. The integrated approach used by the model was effective in identifying the significance of key factors influencing overall water quality such as explosives use, mine water inflow rates, waste rock reaction rates, site/mine management options, and effectiveness of treatment. The model provides an example of an effective tool for comprehensive, integrated system evaluation and management.
