Mine operators use grade control to determine the destination of each block of material in the mine. In polymetallic mines, grades are best expressed in dollars: the Net Smelter Return, NSR, per tonne. To estimate NSRs, geologists working on grade control develop models for each geometallurgical domain in the mine. These models may incorporate observations on the mineralogy and grain sizes of the material being examined. The site’s mill operators contribute to the models by providing geologists with statistical analyses that relate assay results and mineralogical compositions to metallurgical parameters, such as the rates of recovery of each economic metal to each of the concentrates produced, and the compositions of those concentrates. The team responsible for sales and marketing of the site’s products contributes to the NSR models by providing details of the costs of shipping concentrates to smelters and refineries; and by providing figures that are specified in the smelter contracts, such as the payability of the metals in each concentrate and the fees charged by the smelter. The mill operators also provide, for the NSR models, equations to estimate the rates of recovery of deleterious materials to each concentrate. Deleterious materials comprise mostly halogens and amphoteric elements, both of which reduce the efficiency of smelters. Furthermore, deleterious materials such as antimony and arsenic may be poisonous to people and to the environment. The sales and marketing team provide specifics of the penalties that smelters impose upon deleterious materials. These penalties may reduce NSRs by tens of percent, possibly to levels below the cut-off grade. Thus, in the blocks that are subject to grade control, mine geologists monitor not only the concentrations of economic metals, but also the presence and abundance of deleterious materials. The preparation and maintenance of models, to estimate NSRs and to assess changes in the levels of potentially toxic materials to be mined, requires close and continuing consultation between corporate departments. There must be strong communication of mine geologists with the mill operators; with the people who market the mine’s concentrates; and, should there be a risk of encountering toxic levels of deleterious materials, with the mine’s health, safety and environmental officers. This co-operation could require radical changes in the structure of many organisations. However, experience suggests that such changes can significantly improve the profitability of a mine.

The Operation of the LAROX PF-50 Pressure Filter at 'Ellatzite-Med' Flotation Plant, Bulgaria The implementation of Larox pressure belt filter, type Larox PF-50 provided within 6˜8% moisture content of the produced copper concentrate, which allowed good market realisation. The start-up of the pressure filter in 2009 reduced the electricity costs several times and had a positive impact on the technological regime of flotation. This article reveals the investigation results from the operation of the pressure filter according to different situations (density of the pulp, time for filtration, pressure of the material, pressure of the drying air, time for drying with air and other factors). The investment made in the pressure filter application is a guarantee for the successful operation of 'Ellatzite' flotation plant, Bulgaria in the coming years.

Gwalia Consolidated Ltd has been in the mining industry for about 15 years, yet its key wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has a history dating back to the last century. Similarly Gwalia Consolidated's associate, Sons of Gwalia Ltd owns the historic Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch Mines with Sons of Gwalia celebrating its centenary this year. This durability is a testament to the quality of the orebodies concerned and the massive technological achievements over this time which have enabled each of these mines to maintain their competitiveness. While Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch were and continue to be gold mines, the wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has survived and in fact prospered through the development of alternative products from its rich and unique pegmatite. Similarly, for Gwalia Consolidated to grow and prosper it will be necessary to expand the current portfolio of products and operations. The Greenbushes Mine has already given Gwalia world `No 1' status in both the supply of primary tantalite concentrates and lithium minerals (spodumene). The asset base contributed by Gwalia's gold investments assisted in the recapitalisation of the Greenbushes assets to fully develop their potential. Industrial minerals and strategic metals were of interest to Gwalia as these markets are relatively small and it is possible to develop an influential if not dominant position in the market with a quality asset. Capital expenditure to develop such projects are also usually in the order of $10 m to $20 m, a manageable range relative to Gwalia's size.

A large amount of wastes from the preparation plant is produced. The properties of these wastes vary depending on the mineralogical contents of the mother rock in which the coal is embedded. The waste quality depends on the method of mining and cleaning. The waste mainly consists of clays, quartz, carbonaceous materials, mica, pyrites and so on. About 55 per cent of coal-ash is now utilised and the remains are disposed of at the disposal sites, however, the life of the disposal site is limited. Moreover, it is difficult to find new disposal sites. Therefore, it is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the coal-ash be increased in every field in Japan. So, it is very much available if the injection material for natural/artificial openings can be applied on the cement that is added to flyash. Among the man-made pozzolans, a flyash is probably the most successful component used in grout injection. When flyash is added to Portland cement concrete, the same kinds of oxides as those of the cement are being added. As an injection component, flyash acts, in part, as a fine aggregate and, in part, as a binding component. However, there is not a substantial alteration of the properties of the original component. From these points of view, in order to clarify to what degree the flyash content affects the properties of the injected grout mixture; different combinations of flyash, Portland cement and water were considered by means of several experiments.

Commonly held ideas about effective training have long emphasised the importance of realism. Realistic training builds better experience among the trainees and a better perspective on the training material, making training more effective. While great strides have been made in this realm for mine safety and mine rescue training there are still areas that can be improved. One possible area is the expanded use of a mine fire simulation program where the migration of gases and smoke can be realistically displayed in an emergency, and outcomes varied as different conditions are being simulated. The use of mine fire simulation software potentially allows for the creation of more realistic scenarios in that smoke advance rates can be measured and recreated in evacuation scenarios, or that gas readings in mine rescue training can be dynamically and realistically changed to show the effect that time has on the fire scenario.CITATION:Slaughter, C and Tien, J C, 2015. Recent events have raised the issue of whether, and if so when and how, an explorer may gather data from a mining tenement or permit which is held under the relevant mining Act by another party. Two situations arise: that of the small operator who wishes to prospect, and if successful mark off, ground held by others by virtue of the local form of exploration permit; and that of a regional explorer who may wish to enter on to some one else's existing mining tenement within the region of interest. The legal situation varies from state to state. At present the broad consensus seems to be that, provided consent is given, small-scale prospecting on another's exploration permit is at least tolerated if not actually provided for by the relevant Act. Entry onto a granted tenement to carry out any form of exploration is, however, prohibited in all jurisdictions unless consent is given. Furthermore it would appear that the proposal and conclusion of a joint venture agreement places certain obligations upon the party proposing to carry out exploration. These conclusions apply where ground surveys are proposed. Where data acquisition is by aerial survey the situation is much less clear, principally it would appear, because up to now little thought has been given to it. If trespass applies at ground level, at what height does it cease to apply? Can aerial magnetometry or photography be classified as prospecting? Is there an obligation upon public authorities who carry out remote sensing to make data available to the holders of mining tenements within the surveyed areas? Moves are now afoot to address these and other considerations, and it would be in the interests of everyone if a national approach to the problem could be adopted from the beginning. Certain suggestions in this respect are put forward.

The algorithms employed by the commercial tools are either heuristic algorithm or iterative optimisation of a subsystem. This often results in a suboptimal schedule. In this paper, the author presents a new scheduling algorithm that incorporates with a novel stockpile configuration system, an improved algorithm on multiple processes and a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) global optimisation model. It can simultaneously optimise stockpiles, blending, multiple processes as well as multiple mines. The Macraes gold mine in Otago, New Zealand, is developed along the central portion of the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ), which dips gently to the NE, and is traceable over 30 km of strike, before disappearing under tertiary cover. Mineralisation is most intensely developed along the hanging wall shear, which defines the upper limit of the shear zone, although significant packages of quartz vein arrays and mineralised shears occur sporadically beneath the hanging wall shear.The Macraes gold mine is now in its 25th year of operation, well beyond the projected mine life at the time of commissioning in 1990, and currently contains over triple the measured and indicated resource inventory that was defined at start up. The extended mine life and resource growth has been driven by exploration and resource development success, efficient low-cost mining and processing, improving gold price, as well as an ethos of continuous improvement.The emphasis of Oceanagold’s exploration and resource development has shifted over time; from hanging-wall-focused mapping, soil sampling and step-out drilling, through exploitation of previously drilled stockwork mineralisation, to the pursuit of blind, higher-grade underground targets.Mineralisation within the HMSZ remains open at depth, and the regional potential has not been fully tested. "Predictive maintenance (also known as PHM or equipment ‘health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future equipment failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:reduction of equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetimeautomatic determination of the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis avoidance of costs of unnecessary maintenance and unexpected failures improved safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data preprocessing is performed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques. In the case that data isn’t available for the full range of operating modes, operating scenarios can be simulated. Machine learning techniques are then used to estimate equipment health. Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be operationalised in an IT environment such as a server or cloud. Alternatively, algorithms may be implemented in an embedded system directly on the equipment, allowing for faster response times and significantly reducing the amount of data sent over the network.In this paper, we use both historical and simulated data of the plant under various modes of operation including run to failure, and we then leverage machine learning techniques in MATLAB to estimate degradation and remaining useful life. This technique, of combining both simulation models and machine learning, in the areas of predictive maintenance and equipment health monitoring has been adopted by Safran, makers of aircraft jet engines, since 2007. Of the various copper sulfides in the EarthÆs crust, chalcopyrite is by far the most common. This mineral is also the most difficult to leach, with hydrometallurgical extraction processes characterised by prohibitively slow kinetics. While a number of processes, including leaching at atmospheric pressure and temperature, pressure leaching at higher temperature, and bioleaching of concentrates in stirred tanks and whole ores in heaps have been demonstrated to some extent, there is currently no full-scale unit process for the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from chalcopyrite ores. Titan Resources NL operated a test bacterial heap leach at Radio Hill, Western Australia in 2001, to extract nickel and copper from a mixed sulfide ore that contained significant amounts of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. A proprietary mixed bacterial culture was used to inoculate the heap, and the nickel and copper were precipitated from the resultant solution as mixed hydroxides. Although 65 per cent of the copper from the Radio Hill heap was eventually recovered, the rate of extraction followed an unexpected trend, as the initial rates of copper recovery were much slower than column tests had suggested. It was postulated that this was due to dissolved copper precipitating as covellite or chalcocite in the most poorly aerated zones within the heap, ie furthest from the aeration pipes at the base. It was further hypothesised that the lack of oxidants (oxygen, ferric iron) and the likely inactivity of bacteria in these areas limited the re-dissolution of such secondary copper precipitates. In this study the above hypothesis was tested in column experiments using the same mixed sulfide ore and a synthetic leach solution. One set of columns was aerated and another set was operated without aeration. Results showed that precipitation of copper occurred regardless of whether the column was aerated or not. The results suggested that pH of the leach solution played a significant part in the precipitation of the copper. Further column tests revealed this to be the case. These results are described here in detail.

The emerging discipline of ægeometallurgyÆ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing commercial and cultural trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. Geometallurgy involves a quantified and spatially constrained approach to ore characterisation in terms of relationships to critical processing performance. Industry recognition of the need for large-scale, integrated geometallurgical research is currently supporting a major new research initiative. The AMIRA International P843 æGeMIIIÆ project (geometallurgical mapping and mine modelling) is a cross discipline collaboration involving four major Australian research groups; CODES the ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits at the University of Tasmania, a world leader in economic geology-related research; the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) at the University of Queensland, a world leader in mining and mineral processing research; the WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre (BRC) at the University of Queensland, which aims to be a world leader in mining geostatistics, operations research and optimisation in mine design and planning; and CSIRO Exploration and Mining in the area of automated core logging. The project is currently supported by 19 global mineral companies. The project aims to deliver fundamental knowledge, tools and methods for more effective approaches to geometallurgical definition of mineralogy, element deportment and texture that can be linked to mineral processing performance and efficiency at a range of scales. Outcomes are improved predictive indices of processing performance that can be embedded in resource block models to define processing domains, which can be exploited in mine planning and optimisation. To achieve these aims the project is involved in a range of technology developments that include more automated core logging technologies, new applications of automated microscopy and development of software-based texture analysis and categorisation techniques. Attributes derived from these measurement technologies are used to develop predictive processing models linked to new small-scale physical testing regimes.

The behaviour and deportment of indium during the precipitation of sodium jarosite from Fe2(S04)3 - Na2SO4 solutions were investigated. Indium is readily precipitated with sodium jarosite, and the extent of In precipitation increases as the In concentration of the solution increases. It was shown that In 3+ substitutes for Fe 3+ in the jarosite structure to form a nearly ideal solid solution series. On a molar basis, the precipitation of Fe is slightly favoured over that of In, and the difference is reduced as the pH increases. Sodium jarosite precipitation becomes kinetically rapid at temperatures >70¦C, but increasing temperatures in the range 70 to 150¦C affect neither the relative precipitation of In and Fe nor the composition of the jarosite product. Low Na2SO4 concentrations result in reduced product yields and jarosite precipitates in which H3O' > Na+. The hydronium-rich precipitates have reduced In contents. Increasing the ZnSO4 concentration of the solution slightly increases the quantity of jarosite formed and results in the incorporation of -0.3 per cent Zn in the jarosite structure. Otherwise, the presence of ZnSO4 has no significant effect on the composition of the jarosite. Seeding accelerates the rate of jarosite precipitation but has a negligible influence on the deportment of In. The jarosite precipitation reaction at 98¦C is relatively rapid and near-steady state conditions are achieved in - 6 h even in the absence of seed. The initially precipitated jarosite is slightly enriched in In with respect to Fe. The ferric ion concentration of the solution has a significant influence on both the amount of jarosite formed and its composition. In particular, the jarosites precipitated from dilute Fe3+ media have significantly enhanced In contents. Hence, it may be possible to recover - 25 per cent of the dissolved In, at the 1000 mg/L level, in a jarosite precipitate assaying - ten per cent In by the controlled oxidation-precipitation of sodium jarosite from a ferrous sulphate processing solution.

The comprehensive processing of raw materials and the tendency to waste-free production require the combination of various methods of concentrating mineral resources. Magnetic separation, an ecologically clean method of concentration, is one step in the technological cycle of ore processing, and cleaning and classifying of raw materials. Separators with superconducting magnetic systems cooled by liquid helium are the novel equipment for practical concentration. Recently, high-gradient (HGMS) and open-gradient (OGMS) magnetic separators using the effect of superconductivity have appeared. The separators of the first type are expedient in the head-end of the technological cycle, as they are most efficient for processing of particles 100 ¦m and greater in size. In this case the main task is to obtain pure tailings with a minimum amount of the useful component. This method allows the essential reduction in the cost of the subsequent crushing and grinding, because only the magnetic concentrate is directed to further processing. The separators of the VGMS type are used more efficiently in the final stages of the concentration cycle to condition the end product. The present work is devoted to the theoretical and experimental investigation of the motion of weakly magnetic particles in the working chamber of superconducting separators of the open-gradient magnetic separator (OGMS) and HGMS types. The flat OGMS is equipped by a magnetic system with NbTi racetracks cooled by liquid helium. The chamber is divided into zones by partitions parallel to the plane of the magnetic system. It is shown how, depending on the number of the zones and their depths, the extraction function of the OGMS varies and the transition from the OGMS to the HGMS occurs. The particles 2 mm and less in size are considered. The extraction parameter distribution of the particles was measured for a multicomponent weakly magnetic ore. The Greens are asking the question: what do our mining towns look like in 2050 and how can we be better prepared? The resources boom brought enormous profits to the main players and was partly responsible for insulating Australia through the worst of last year's global economic turmoil. However, with indicators of a resurgent mining boom, it is essential we learn from the recent past. The last boom saw housing stress at levels unseen in the big cities, health services strained to breaking point, and Aboriginal poverty side by side with some of the most lucrative industrial precincts in the country. Much of the wealth still flies right over the heads of regional communities as fly-in, fly-out operations proliferate.   Behind these local stresses, resources booms rely on the stripping of non-renewable resources which will eventually run out, and the unique environment of the north-west is taking a battering.    Communities of the north-west have a perilously narrow economic base which must be broadened if townships of the Pilbara and Goldfields are to avoid the fate of places such as Goldsworthy and Wittenoom. Unless this is informed by local communities, decisions will be made in capital cities thousands of kilometres away by people largely ignorant of the unique conditions prevailing in regional Western Australia.   Global climate change negotiations and oil depletion will heavily penalise emissions-intensive economies like Australia which fail to keep up as the world moves to a low-carbon environment. The intent of this address is to look forward into the 21st Century and present certain thoughts as to how underground coal mining might be conducted. The views in this talk are based principally on the author's experience with mining practices in the United States. It may be difficult to accept, but the 21st Century is a mere 12 years away. What new techniques will be available? To develop an understanding of the way in which technology has been and could be changing, a two- stage analysis is made of mining technology for U.S. Coal. The first phase covers the period 1975 to the present, while the second includes 1960 to 1975. This historical perspective includes a view of underground production by mining methods, considerations of labour productivity, and a review of accident and fatality rates. Several topics are important features of this historical analysis. Among the most significant are: (1) the introduction of Ion-wall mining technology into U.S. underground coal mines, (2) the use of computers to assist in mine planning and design activities, (3) major efforts to improve health and safety performance, with emphasis on underground dust control, and (4) improvements in mining equipment with an eye towards increased reliability and up-time performance. Based on that historical perspective, projections are made in three increments. The first being immediately at the turn of the century, the second being a dozen or so years beyond that, and the third being at the quarter point of the 21st Century.

The occurrence of gold so finely divided as to be invisible under the microscope, even at magnificatioIl; of 1,200 to 2,000 diameters, is rare, but not unknow;n.. Burg (1930) has described an occurrence of such "invisible gold" from the 25/37 vein of the Bradisor mine at Brad in the Siebengeburgen district of Rumania (Transylvania), in which the pyrite contained up to 150 grams of gold per ton (approx. 5 oz. gold per ton). Hoffman (1931) has described an epithermal silver gold ore from the Titiribi district of Columbia (South America), in which "invisible gold" to the extent of 150 grams per ton occurred in the pyrite, arsenopyrite and zincblende; and Haycock (1937) has recorded it in pyrite from the Surf Point mine (Canada), which contained no visible gold, but yielded positive testsfor gold whenever samples drilled from polished surfaces of apparently homogeneous pyrite were tested spectrographically.The examination of a cyanided pyritic concentrate, together with a sample of the ore from which it' was prepared, from the Dolphin East lode at Vatukoula, Fiji, carried out as part of the programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia, has established a further occurrence of "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Dolphin pyrite contains about 25 oz. gold per ton, and the arsenopyrite contains more than 33 oz. per ton.The concentrate has been prepared for the Mill Superintendent of the Emperor Gold Mining Co. by L. The key technical theme of ‘orebody knowledge’ has been applied by Rio Tinto in the Pilbara iron ore precinct from 1966, when operations first started there. It forms the basis of present day application, as well as planning for the future.This paper will review how the early towns and mines commenced and how they formed the basis of Rio Tinto’s early operations, on which the Pilbara precinct has been based. A profile of the last decade of Pilbara growth will be highlighted, together with the current integrated network of mines, rail and ports and the next generation of expansions.The paper will specifically describe the Rio Tinto process of significant resource evaluation, including comprehensive drilling programs and the conversion from resource to reserves. It will also describe the overall mine planning process, both from the strategic view, as well as for short-term mine plans.The ability to innovate in resource development will be discussed. This will include not only the technical dimension of changing cut off grades, use of low-grade ores and managing low-grade stockpiling and beneficiation, but also the broader application of new technology and innovation in the iron ore business.

Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. Carrapateena is a copper-gold sub level caving operation located in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. One of Australia’s largest undeveloped copper deposits, the project will be a 4.25 Mtpa underground operation, with an estimated mine life of 20 years (OZ Minerals, 2017). First concentrate production was achieved in December 2019, within the Iron Ore Copper Gold (IOCG) hematite breccia complex. The Carrapateena orebody is overlain by 500 m of barren sediments of the Stuart Shelf, which hosts two aquifers. The cover sequence is dominated by shales, quartzites and sandstones in order of thickness. The cover sequence presented challenges to the mine ventilation system as a result of highly variable rock strengths. On this basis, the site developed the first vent rise, Vent Rise 5 (VR5), earlier than required as a means to test the empirical stability assessment. Assessment for VR5 was completed in 2017, with the mine yet to develop through much of the cover sequence. Due to the geotechnical data available at the time, it was anticipated that break out would occur within the vent rise walls as a function of the low strength Woomera shales. VR5 was developed to 4.5 mᴓ in late 2018. The timing of the VR5 development enabled the site technical team to calibrate empirical stability factors for the assessment of future vent rises. At the time of writing, four additional vent rises have been successfully developed to a diameter of 5.5 m. No significant overbreak has been observed within any of the vent rises. This paper is intended for geotechnical practitioners designing large-diameter vent rises in geological environments similar to the Stuart Shelf where a similar approach to vent rise design may be warranted.

The paper describes a system for providing mine management with a continuous indication of the effectivness of longwall coalface powered supports in controlling roof-to-floor convergence. The system comprises on-face instrumentation monitoring convergence and support leg circuit pressures, a means of transmitting the output of that instrumentation to the surface for collection, and software which presents both a condensed analysis for rapid review of the current state, and extended analyses from which remedial action can be recommended if a problem is identified. The results of a field trial are presented showing that meaningful results can be obtained.
