Many volcanoes in western Melanesia have tectonic settings and rock compositions that do not conform to conventional models of arc- trench systems. From August 1962 to June 1976 Peko Mines Ltd. produced Gold Bullion at the Peko Control Mill using 18x24 Denver Mineral Jigs and strake tables. Gold ores treated during this period were obtained from Orlando, Juno and Ivanhoe Mines and from the Warrego Mine after 1974, all in the Tennant Creek Area of the Northern Territory. With the downturn in copper prices Warrego Copper ore mining ceased and the copper Smelter closed down in February 1974, Warrego gold ore continued to be treated in the Peko Concentrator.

The Late Permian intermediate to silicic talc-alkaline Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W., consist largely of shallow marine, redeposited volcaniclastic rocks which host epithermal Ag-Au deposits. Pervasive hydro- thermal alteration is widespread. The 200-300 m Cataract River Member includes several sedimen- tation cycles composed of massive pumice brec- cias, overlain by laminated sandstones and siltstones, interbedded with marine, fossil- iferous mudstones. Two distinct groups of cla- sts exist within the volcaniclastic beds: 1. Lithics of predominantly intermediate compos- ition lavas that have undergone subaerial epi- clastic erosion and transportation; 2.Pumice, quartz and plagioclase crystals which have not been reworked by epiclastic processes. The lithic clasts were derived locally in a sub- aerial environment within the Drake Volcanics, and pumice and crystal fragments from contem- poraneous centres of silicic volcanism else- where in New England, N.S.W. The latter group of clasts was transported to Drake by Plinian airfall or rafting, and fell and was washed on- to emergent portions of the Drake Volcanics, where reworked locally derived fragments occ- urred. Cold state subaqueous mass-flows, prod- uced by slumping, resedimented the mixed vol- caniclastic detritus into the marine basin in a series of cyclic units with massive lower parts, and laminated upper zones. Modern ana- logs of the palaeogeographic setting in New England, N.S.W., in the Late Permian are pro- vided by the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and sou- thern Kyushu, Japan.

A major advantage of the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process is the conversion of sulphide sulphur in zinc concentrate to elemental sulphur during pressure leaching. Elemental sulphur can be recovered as a marketable byproduct by flotation of the leach residue, and melting and filtration of the sulphur flotation concentrate. The behaviour and deportment of sulphur during pressure leaching, flotation, and melting and filtration are discussed in this paper using data obtained from the treatment of a wide variety of zinc concentrates in the laboratory miniplant at the Sherritt Research Centre. The quality of the elemental sulphur byproduct and a process for purifying the sulphur are also Presented.

Bow-tie analysis is a commonly used tool in the Major Hazard Facility sector to identify, display and control risks that have the potential to pose serious harm to personnel. It is a simple but powerful risk management tool that displays traditional risk assessment outputs as easily interpreted ‘bow-tie diagrams’. These are an effective and versatile communication format that can be applied to any type of risk (eg safety, environmental, assets etc) and as such show great benefit in managing operational hazards in mining.

The surface waters in regions with acid sulfate soils (ASS) can contain high concentrations of acidity and dissolved metals. These soils cause problems for agriculture, construction and development. The water can be neutralised through many techniques, however a technique that is low in maintenance and low in cost is most desirable. Due to the vast spread of ASS along AustraliaÆs coastline an expensive and high maintenance solution would not be cost-effective. In this study, a passive treatment system that has been used to neutralise acid rock drainage has been applied to treat ASS water. This system is commonly referred to as an oxic limestone drain (OLD) or an anoxic limestone drain (ALD) depending on the waters dissolved oxygen concentration. The system that has been developed for ASS has a similar closed system to the OLD or ALD, that traps the carbon dioxide which forms when limestone reacts with acidic water. It has been called a closed tank reactor (CTR) and is constructed by placing limestone into an airtight tank. A common problem that will occur when acidic water with a high concentration of dissolved metals reacts with limestone is the formation of metal oxy-hydroxide precipitates. These precipitates can coat or armour the limestone and reduce its reactivity. To minimise the accumulation of precipitates in the CTR, perforated subdrains have been installed. It is anticipated that high water pressure and flow through the subdrains will remove some precipitates. A sump has also been installed at the base of the tank to collect precipitates that settle under gravity. The CTR has been tested for 70 days at a sugar cane farm located at McLeods Creek, NSW. Within this time the sump and subdrains have been used to flush the system. An orange solution was produced during flushing and it is believed to contain iron and aluminium precipitates. The initial performance of the CTR raised pH by at least one unit. Almost all dissolved aluminium was removed and more than half the dissolved iron. The total titratable acidity ranged from 17 - 92 mg/L CaCO3 in the initial month of monitoring. After passing through the CTR the acidity was reduced to zero. The performance of the CTR during the last few days of monitoring decreased. This is believed to be due to a pulse of water with higher acidity and dissolved metal content that lasted a week. In this pulse, the acidity reached 307 mg/L CaCO3 and the total dissolved aluminium reached a maximum of 24 mg/L. Higher concentrations of dissolved metals may have been the cause for lower performance due to increased precipitation and coating on the limestone.

The indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in the past has created a serious fire hazard in the bush of the northern New South Wales coalfields. Spontaneous or bushfire-induced combustion in large neglected dumps of this material has increased in recent years causing a rise in air pollution. Surface methods of coal waste disposal are still being practised, and in many cases new material is being added to old dumps, many of which are burning. CSI RO has conducted research on methods of preventing and controlling fires in coal waste and recommends practical methods of overcoming these problems. Some laboratory and on-site investigations are described and the hazards of improperly constructed dumps are considered. The available techniques of fire prevention and control are discussed in relation to Australian conditions. Proposals for the safe and economical disposal of coal waste are outlined.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Halasu porphyry copper belt, located in the East Junggar basin bounded by Chinese Altay to the north and the Tianshan mountains to the south in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is one of the major porphyry copper belts in Xinjiang province, north-west China. Combined with previous studies in this area, the magmatism can be divided into three periods: pre-mineralisation activity of 390 Ma syn-mineralisation activity of 380–370 Ma post-mineralisation activity of 360–330 Ma.Through the comparison of zircon chemistry from ore-bearing and barren syn-mineralisation intrusions, negative correlation was identified between Ti-in-zircon temperatures and oxygen fugacity, corresponding to the fact that late-stage syn-mineralisation granitoids contain high water content, high oxygen fugacity and low temperatures with higher mineralisation potential. In addition, the relative low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios, high eHf(t) and eNd(t) values and mantle Pb isotope characteristics in this study support that the magma forming these intrusions was probably derived from juvenile crust generated during subduction-accretionary processes.CITATION:Wu, C and Chen, H, 2015. In this paper, a comparative performance evaluation of geostatistical, spectral, and fractal methods is made for short-scale variability prediction. The algorithms compared are: sequential Gaussian simulation method; a random fractal algorithm based on the generalised stochastic subdivision method; and a spectral simulation approach adopted for direct multi-dimensional simulation. The data for this study have been obtained from a mined out coal property. As this property was being mined, a 7315 m by 7315 m (24000 ft by 24000 ft) coal block was extensively sampled at an approximate spacing of 107 m (350 ft) and the 60-ton samples were analysed for sulphur in the 1.50 float gravity fraction. This data set is used here with the three methods to generate the simulated realisations, which are analysed for semivariogram reproduction and for simulation errors. Although all three methods converge to the true semivariogram in an average sense, the coefficient of variation of the average semivariogram for the Fourier integral method is minimum. The realisations generated by the sequential Gaussian method have minimum mean simulation error. The choice of a simulation method based on variability reproduction and simulation errors remains difficult.

The Hauraki Goldfield consists of a large number of volcanic-associated epithermal gold deposits within the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), North Island , New Zealand; it is the most accessible and most studied of the Southwest Pacific gold regions. The deposits occur generally as steeply dipping quartz veins and breccia sheets in faults and fractures.From a tectonic perspective, the CVZ is generally considered a Neogene convergent volcanic arc constructed under an extensional tectonic regime; the common tectonic setting for epithermal mineralisation. The gold deposits are mostly hosted in subaerial andesitic arc-type volcanic rocks. Temporally, however, mineralisation is associated with rhyolitic rocks of a bimodal volcanic suite that may represent a back-arc environment. Rifting and calderas may be important components of the latter regime, but this is not yet clear; the general structural framework controlling the location of CVZ gold deposits remains poorly understood. Current research at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomechanics, into the mode of response of fill as a structural component has been based on model tests for prediction of behaviour and field observation of critical parameters. The procedure is summarised in four stages: (a) define the specific fill function (b) postulate the mode of failure (c) use models to quantify the conditions (d) monitor critical parameters to check or update the analysis in (c). The above procedure is used to postulate the failure modes of each of the possible func- tions performed by fill materials. Analytical techniques, or lines of investigation, are described for each of these modes and specific reference is made, where, possible, to an exis- ting mine environment.

Static attachment of bubbles to solids is contrasted with dynamic attachment in flotation cells. The times of contact during particle-bubble collisions in dynamic attachment are compared with the induction time determinations and the kinetics of thinning of the liquid films separating solids and bubbles. The thinning is examined mainly in terms of electrostatic and dispersion (van der Waals) contributions to the disjoining pressure existing in the films. The local heterogeneity (on a molecular scale) of charge distribution invariably present at all interfaces (even at conditions of zero zeta potential) calls for some means to minimize possible electrostatic repulsions which arise when the electrical double layer at the air-bubble interface begins to overlap that present at the solid surface, on encounter between particles and bubbles. It is postulated that dipoles of frother molecules, owing to their ability to "flip over" (polarise), replace localized electrostatic repulsion by attraction within fractions of a milli- second, as long as the structure of the frother molecules is sufficiently "bulky" to maintain diffuse films (of mixed collector-frother) at the air/liquid interface of bubbles. The relaxation times of dipoles (signifying their "flipping over" ability) have to be shorter than the collision times between particles and bubbles for particle-bubble attachment to be facilitated under dynamic Conditions.

Financial markets are subject to constant change and project finance, as a product within these markets, adapts and will continue to adapt with those changes. A meaningful discussion of these adaptations requires an understanding of differences between non-, limited and full recourse project finance. The reasons sponsors seek and lenders provide project finance are also pertinent in this context. Arranging a project, financing package can be a canplex and time consuming task. An important first step is choosing the right advisor for the assignment and then structuring and tailoring the financing before approaching prospective lenders. The last thirty years has seen changes in the needs of sponsors and the ability of lenders to meet them. These shifts in preference may well be a guide to the future. Several major project financings successfully canpleted in Australia in the last few years and more recent examples are broadly discussed. Project finance will be keenly sought in the future and the form and nature it takes will continue to vary.

Sequencing of large underground firings is a critical aspect of blast performance. Using theory developed in open cut operations, where blast results are easier to quantify, a new technique for sequencing underground mass blasts has been developed. The basis for the technique is to identify timing regimes to control fragmentation and relief then apply non-electrics to fit these criteria. The use of computer software to graphically interpret delay statistics enables the evaluation of designs in a realistic manner.

Water recovery from tailings for reuse in mineral processing is essential to operation of mines in the Atacama Desert of Chile. With annual rainfall of 5 mm, the prudent and efficient use of available water resources is a major issue for the Escondida Mine and other mines in the area. The Escondida Mine is located at an altitude of 3100 m, in a very arid, seismically active part of the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. The site is located about 170 km from the coastal city of Antofagasta. From 1994 to 2002, tailings were discharged into the Hamburgo Tailings Facility, which comprises a series of æpaddiesÆ located near the open pit and mill. Because water in the region is only obtainable from groundwater sources, the paddy system incorporated a number of design features with the aim to maximise water recovery from the tailings. As part of the recent mill expansion to 237 500 metric tonnes per day, a new tailings facility, the Laguna Seca Tailings Facility, projected to be one of the largest tailings facilities in the world, was commissioned in 2002. Extensive studies were conducted for the design of the new facility to predict water recovery from the conventional wet disposal of tailings. The predictions were calibrated against the performance of the Hamburgo Tailings Facility and subsequently re-calibrated against actual performance during the first year of operation at the Laguna Seca Tailings Facility. Initial operation of the Laguna Seca Facility was marked by a coincidental change in tailings characteristics from design, which highlighted the need for thoroughly understanding tailings behaviour during deposition, and the parameters and deposition techniques that could enhance water recovery. Systems have been put in place to manage the tailings deposition and respond to changes in key parameters such that water recovery targets can be reliably achieved. This paper describes the background studies that were conducted to evaluate evaporation and tailings behaviour, summarises the water balance and then presents some observations from the commissioning and start-up of the facility.

A general review of grinding mill steel liner evolutions/developments in recent times. The driving force behind these developments has been the mill operators desire to minimise the nett cost of their operation. These developments have resulted from a team approach between supplier, operators and reline crews. The move towards larger diameter high aspect mills, faster mill speeds, pebble ports and the use of large diameter grinding media has affected the traditional liner designs, which is placing higher demands on the supplier to meet these new working parameters and expectations. Operators are also taking closer ownership in the liners being supplied, as demonstrated by the development of their own mill liner specifications. This paper outlines some of liner developments and changes undergone at various milling operations around Australia and overseas (such as Cadia Hill, Kidston, Ok Tedi Mining, PT Freeport, etc) and where to in the future?

The dynamic behaviour of the load in a pilot-scale ball mill has been measured as a function of axial position within the mill, end plate lifter design, load volume J (percent of mill volume), percent solids in the slurry S and mill speed N (percent of critical speed). Conductivity probes were inserted through the shell of the mill to provide online measurements of the dynamic orientation of the load in the mill. It was found that 1. the height of the shoulder of the load is increased by increasing J, S or N. 2. Measurements of the effect of S on the location of the shoulder of the load should be very useful in mill control strategies. 3. The axial centre of gravity of the load in the mill is not affected by operating conditions. 4. The presence of lifters on the feed end plate does not affect the torque drawn by the mill. 5. Holdup of slurry in the mill is a strong function of slurry viscosity and a weak function of mill speed.

The Buttle Lake camp is in central Vancouver Island, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. The camp hosts world-class polymetallic volcanogenic deposits of Devonian, Frasnian age (370Ma). This paper describes an on-going sulphur and lead isotope study of the major orebodies.Sulphur isotopes were determined for sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite and galena) and sulphate (barite). Sulphide analyses are markedly different from sulfate. The differences are explained below in a unique model.Sulphide isotopic compositions cluster tightly (del34S -6.7 to 4.6), and demonstrate isotope reversals. Calculated temperatures of correctly ordered mineral pairs are unrealistically high. We conclude that the sulphides are in isotopic disequilibrium, presumably because of rapid precipitation from a quenched plume in an anoxic environment, and because of subsequent sulphide replacement.

Remote and at times harsh conditions have always made it difficult for exploration, but modern explorers also have to deal with cover, numerous technologies, an explosion of data and critical early community engagement. Mining deals with the reality of moving and breaking thousands of tonnes of rock each day to extract what can be a very minor component of economic value, and, furthermore, society expects that this will be done in a clean and sustainable manner. The exploration and mining challenges appear disparate, but they are intimately related.Although not widely appreciated, both exploration and mining have a long tradition of innovation. Over the last 50 years, major step changes in exploration have resulted from radical advances in our understanding of ore forming processes, new geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing technologies, and new ways to integrate and interrogate data. Over a more extended period, close to 100 years, mining has developed bulk surface and underground methods, selective extraction through flotation and leaching and global positioning system–geographic information system control systems that collectively facilitate mining at a massive scale. And yet, in spite of these successes and the boom that we have enjoyed in the last ten years, the industry is under pressure and the need for innovation and change is paramount.The major drivers for innovation are the need for increased quality in discoveries and mines and the need to interact effectively with communities and jurisdictions such that the benefits of quality mines are recognised and enjoyed widely.We are still making new discoveries around the Pacific Rim and elsewhere, but many argue that the quality – grade and accessibility – of these discoveries is decreasing. The net result is that explorers are delivering resources and reserves for development at lower grades and with higher capital and operating costs than current operations. For mining, the increasing age of many existing operations contributes to increasing costs, which, when combined with decreasing cut-offs and lower grades, also results in declining quality. The combined picture does not look good.Just as the pressure to improve performance and margins in the face of declining inputs increases, we are simultaneously faced with increasing societal demands for improved environmental performance and sustainable practices. This is most apparent at the local, community level, where opposition ultimately leads to delays or even cancellation of new projects.
