The history of the reduction of iron from its ores is lost in antiquity. Archreologists state that man has practised it for over four thousand years. Until comparatively recent times charcoal was the principal reducing agent for making metallic iron from its various oxidised ores. Coke was first used by iron founders in England in 1619, and its use spread gradually throughout the civilised world from then onwards. Indeed, the destruction of forests to obtain the requisite charcoal made the iron founders, both in England and America, extremely unpopular, and this hampered the iron industry to a considerable extent, until coal provided the metallurgist with a new and better fuel--coke which is used by most pyro-metallurgists today. The transition from wood to coal products for iron smelting had a profound effect on the location of iron works. Particularly was this the case in America where, in the infancy of the industry, practically each of the early States had its own iron producers, but as coal and coke replaced charcoal, there came about a concentration of the iron and steel industry around the coking coal deposits, and so today there are huge steel plants clustered around the soft coal basins in Pennsylvania and Illinois.The development of the iron and steel industry in Australia, which is comparatively recent by world standards, has been cradled in the coal basins of New South Wales. The first steel works of any consequence in this country were built near Lithgow, close by the mines which produced the coal for coking.Incidentally, these works were rather unique in that the three essential materials for iron and steel manufacture-ore, coal, and limestone-were found virtually at the works' back door.When, in 1912, the location of the proposed steel works for The Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. for smelting ore from Iron Knob in South Australia was considered, the site ultimately chosen was at Newcastle, almost on top of seams of satisfactory coking coal. One of the major factors which had determined the site of the steel works was the fact that, about 1912, three tons of coal were required to produce one ton of finished steel product, and the relative economics of ore and coal haulage were much in favour of bringing ore to the coal.

In epithennal deposits changes in the character of mineralization in depth and time are conspicuous and abrupt at the interface between supergene and hypogene zones. As the reaction zone migrates downward as a consequence of surface erosion, previously deposited minerals are placed in unstable chemical enviromments and dissolved. This reaction takes place at the base of the epithermal precious metal zone. Examples at Cerro de Pasco, and Casapalca, Peru; Carlin, Nevada; and porphyry copper-gold deposits are cited.

The paper contains the publication of timber shapes recovered from the Burra Mines during open cut operations in the 1970s. The timber was in the process of being disposed of for fire wood. All timber shapes still in existence in September 1990 were drawn.The collection revealed a number of different types of caps and legs. There were also end plates and wall plates from what appeared to be a hanging sets of shaft timber.

Geomorphology is one of the most basic elements in geographic enviroments. Geomorphological mapping is significant in the spatial distribution of representing land form and understanding various features of geomorphology. Geomorphological mapping began very early in China, as the map, showing conekarst(karst pinnacles) of Juiyishan, Hunan province, it was drawn in 168B.C., which was excavated from Han tomb. Mawangdui, Changsha. Its original idea of map-making is rather similar to that of modern map and could undoutedly be the oldest map of tropical karst discovered in the world.Before liberation, landform mapping was done piecemeally and only a small number of maps were prepared by a few editor as insets.

In the early stages of the planning of a new exploitation, the error in ore reserve estimation is an important factor that must not be disregarded. As this error can be computed by geostatistical methods, the risk of the venture can be calculated for different recognition patterns in a certain assumption of economical conditions. A case story is described for an open pit phosphate deposit in which grade/tonnage curves and their confidence intervals are related to an economic function for three drilling patterns and decisions are taken on the basis of cost and value of supplementary information.

This paper provides a brief historical review of the invention of the spiral separator and its adoption into Australian metallurgical practice. The purpose of the review is to demonstrate that spiral development to date appears to have been a largely empirical process, and that the cur- rent resurgence of interest in the spiral, especially in the coal industry, warrants an increased fundamental research effort. Current research work concentrating on empirical modelling is outlined, while some preliminary experimental results of a more fundamental nature are presented and some research of other disciplines interested in particle transport introduced in order to stimulate further work and discussion.

The paper presents a general background to the subsidence research programme being undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Development in New South Wales. The results of the studies undertaken over the last ten years are summarised. The differences between these results and those obtained by the National Coal Board are discussed. The results of a study carried out on the effect of total extraction beneath a freeway in the southern coalfields are discussed in some detail. The procedures developed for the const- ruction of a 500 mm diameter natural gas pipe- line crossing a number of collieries in the northern coalfields are also outlined. The future direction of the Department's subsidence research programme is discussed.

Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

The calculation of the liberation spectrum in the product from continuous milling operations is a problem of considerable importance, and it is difficult to solve because the population balance equation must be integrated in two-dimensional space. Complete solutions require a very detailed knowledge of the complex interactions between the fracture patterns and the mineralogical ore texture when brittle particles are subject to impact fracture. Most of the liberation models that have been developed to date apply only to batch comminution processes and under these conditions the liberation problem can be studied in isolation. When the comminution is continuous and forms a unit operation in a flowsheet that includes classification and separation operations, the situation is very different, and then the liberation of the minerals must be described when single particles of known mineralogical composition are fractured. Important industrial examples are conventional milling circuits closed by hydrocyclone and regrind mills in flotation plants. This paper presents an efficient computational algorithm for the calculation of the liberation spectrum produced by continuous milling operations. The algorithm relies heavily on the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram. The modifications that are required to make this diagram apply to practical ore minerals, and the internal structure of this diagram can be established using single-particle fracture on mono-size, mono-grade material but suitable liberation models are essential to interpret the data in terms of the cross transfer coefficients required for the population balance procedure. Models proposed by Leroux (1992) and King (1990) are compared to experimental data.

Major improvements have taken place in mineral and coal processing in the last decade. The development of nuclear on-line sensors that continuously analyse the material being processed has led to better control of metalliferous mineral processing and increased recovery of valuable minerals. The recent development of on-line techniques for analysis of coal is expected to be of similar Importance. Australian developments in on-line nuclear gauges are reviewed. These include systems for in-stream analysis of mineral slurries with comments on plant operating experience; on-line determination of ash in coal using low energy Y-ray transmission and pair production techniques; in-stream determination of solids weight fraction and ash content of coal in slurries with variable voidage; and on-line determination of moisture in coal, iron in high grade iron ores and sulphur in lead sinter.

Recent developments in engine, transmission and control technology, likely to give rise to improved performance and efficiency of underground mobile equipment, are reviewed. Turbocharging and the electronic control of fuel pumps and injectors can improve diesel engine performance whilst minimizing exhaust emissions. Ceramic materials promise further improvements in engine efficiency. Nevertheless, electrically powered machines, equipped with trailing cables or 'travelling plugs' are expected to find increasing application where there is less need for flexibility and where the cost of ventilation and heating or cooling makes diesel engines unattractive. Voltage to frequency converters and induction motors appear to have a future in mains powered machines. Vehicles employing energy storage in the form of batteries or flywheels will find increasing application, but it is expected that they will remain a minority until there is a significant break-through in battery technology. Hydrostatic transmissions having high power density and efficiency are likely to be used more widely. Electronic control systems are likely to be used to simplify jobs and to improve performance and productivity. Enhancement of remote control systems is to be expected for work in unsafe areas, but true robot operation is considered unlikely for the moment. Attention to ergonomic factors should produce significant productivity gains.

The reliable estimation of ore reserves in mineral sand deposits depends on drilling methods and assay techniques that have been specially developed within the industry. Improvement of these techniques is a continuing process, as variations within and between deposits are highlighted during the actual mining operation. Constant monitoring of metallurgical losses along with mineral production allows comparison of mineral tonnages accounted for by mining, with original calculated reserves. A review of ore reserves in the Jerusalem Creek field from scout drilling in the sixties, through mining in the seventies, shows the progression from understatement prior to mining, to the present when more than two thirds of the reserves have been depleted.

The optimisation of capital in the total planning context has broadly two components: ò maximising the efficient utilisation of capital against competing capital demands; and ò maximising the efficiency with which the industry's capital requirements are sourced. This paper focuses on the latter of these two concepts, as I wish to highlight that within the coal industry the inefficient sourcing of capital has resulted in the inefficient utilisation of capital. In discussing the optimisation of capital within the coal industry I would like to outline three fundamental issues which currently impact the industry and its application of capital: Initially, from the perspective of an independent investor, the perceived risk associated with investing in a volatile industry cycle has not permitted appropriate funding structures to be created thus leading to an inefficient utilisation of capital. Secondly, investors seeking out a windfall gain have established a practice of trading in the assets rather than encouraging recapitalisation. And lastly the mismatch of supply and demand leading to the establishment of new projects which include a percentage of offshore investment has fostered an environment of lower returns and subsequently a dilution of capital.

Today there are many different techniques of soil remediation used in Australia and throughout the world. This paper considers the thermal desorption remediation technique and, in particular, the application of high temperature filtration to the process. The thermal desorption technique involves the treatment of hydrocarbon (oil, petrol, etc) contaminated soil. The process involves heating the soil in a retort or kiln to drive off the volatile organic contaminants. The exit gas stream from the retort is subsequently passed through an after burner to thermally oxidise the hydrocarbons. This technique produces soil and combustion gas streams which are free of hydrocarbons. Due to the heating and agitation of the soil within the retort, soil particles become entrained in the hot gas stream. To avoid the blockage and fouling of the system's interim ductwork and the afterburner, high temperature filtration technology has been applied to remove these soil particulates without cooling the gas Stream.

Cominco Ltd's Polaris Mine in Canada's High Arctic has been successfully mining zinc ore in permafrost since 1981. Mining methods using frozen backfill have been the key to success. The mine is now producing about 60 per cent of the ore from pillars while maintaining high productivities. Annual ore production is just over one million tonnes providing more than 200 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate each year. Cominco Ltd has adapted management and operating practices to suit the harsh environment and the isolated site, and has shown that a profitable development can be carried out in the tough Arctic conditions, with minimum impact on the environment.

Pulverised coal firing was pioneered in the cement industry prior to the turn of the century. Ash from the coal is absorbed into the mix in the kiln and replaces secondary materials. With high purity limestone coal with high ash content can be used. Fuel cost is a major part of the total manufacturing cost. Cement plants are thus quick to respond to fuel price changes and will use low grade fuels if there is a price advantage. Combustion conditions in a cement kiln differ markedly from a boiler. Flame length is determined by air/fuel mixing but because of fixed secondary air conditions this depends on primary air momentum. Volatile content has some effect on flame length but this can be offset by coal fineness. Much of the heat for cement production is for limestone calcination which is a low grade energy requirement. By allowing long residence time in separate direct fired vessels which then feed the high temperature kiln the energy of materials such as oil shale, tyres and lump lignite can be utilised.

A review of the literature indicated that several studies have been reported on the dissolution of gold using iodide/iodine, bromide/bromine leaching systems. Although the reagent costs are much cheaper for chloride/chlorine (or hypochlorite) this system has not been fully evaluated. This study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental chemistry of the chloride/hypochlorite leaching system. The CHEMIX program was used to model the stability of various gold species existing in the solution. The gold dissolution rate at different conditions was determined using gold strips immersed in various mixtures of chloride/hypochlorite. Leaching experiments were conducted to test the extraction of gold from various ores (oxidised and copper-gold ores), showing a promising prospect for this technique in various applications.
