Successful chemical control of flotation requires practical solutions to many problems. A brief discussion is first given of those para- meters which can be controlled and those which it would be desirable to control. Suitable analytical methods for application to flowing pulp and to clear solution from pulp are out- lined in relation to on-line and off-line control. Practical problems of deciding where a measurement is to be made or a sample is to be taken and how the sample is to be prepared and presented to the measuring device are then considered. Equipment calibration and maintenance are considered in relation to the above factors.

Uranium occurrences and the probable Australian reserves are discussed and the recovery and processing methods used in treatment plants at Radium Hill and Port Pirie, S.A., Rum Jungle and Moline, N.T., and Mary Kathleen, Qid. are reviewed. The broad aspects of the application of nuclear power in Australia are then considered, and those factors of greatest significance are highlighted. It is these factors that are most likely to dictate the future role of nuclear generation in Australia. In commenting on private industry applications, the paper emphasises that each case must be considered on its own merits, and a warning is given that general statements can be misleading. In the long-term situation nuclear power is considered to be capable of playing a leading role and the discussion covers desalination and high load industries although short term applications appear difficult to justify. In non-power applications for nuclear energy reference is made to isotopes and the uses of nuclear devices in mining and civil engineering with a pertinent comment on safety.

Modern petroleum refining offers a complexity of environments, each requiring different metals for the satisfactory performance of-the various sections of the refinery, and this paper first outlines the varied enva.x¦on-ments thus met.It follows that the metal types in use will also vary to suit each particular environment, and the paper' consequently covers the use of ferrous-metals, ranging from plan carbon steels to the high alloy types and the non-ferrous metals, particularly copper and its alloys.The failures of some,of these metals and alloys are then illustrated by experiences it Kwinana. These failures are duo to (a) corrosion, (b) erosion, (c) faulty welding, and (d) mechanical defects,' of which the first is by far the most prevalent. The protective measures taken to prevent subsequent failures are then given under one or other of the following headings :(1) alterations in process conditions, (2) the use of alternative ,alloys,(3) suitable heat treatment, (4) redesign of the failed section, (5) cathodic protection, and (6) use of corrosion inhibitors.Reference is then made to the use of specialised metals and alloys.Metals, generally in the form of oxides or salts, are also used as catalysts in refining processes. Activated alumina is used, combined with silica .forScracking' of heavy oils, and as a support -for platinum, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and similar metals, which catalyse hydro-genation and dehydrogenation-processes. .In the final formulation of petroleum products metallic compounds may be added. Reference is made to the large quantities of lead used by the petroleum industry and to the use of metallic soaps and detergents in the formulation of lubricating oils and greases.

Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. A process was developed based on the thermal hydrolysis and precipitation of iron from solutions resulting from the leaching of zinc plant residue. A study was made of the hydrolysis of iron, at temperatures in the range 140-220°C, in both pure solutions of ferrie sulphate and in leach solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte.At 200°C hydrolysis of pure ferric sulphate solutions results in the precipitation of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, at low acid. concentrations, and a basic salt, Fe2O3.2S03.H20, at hIgher acid concentrations. At 180°C ferric oxide is precipitated at low acid concentrations, but at higher acidities. carphosiderite, 3Fe203.4SO.3.9H20, is the stable phase. Frequently a mIxture of ferric oxide and carphosldente IS produced at 180°C, the ratio of phases being dependent on the non-equilibrium experimental conditions.With solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte hydrolysIS at elevated temperatures results in the precipitation of jarosite compounds of the type NaFe3(S04)2(OH)6 The precipitation of natrojarosite jarosite, and ammonio-jarosite was studied in detail. Temperature, free acidity, and the concentration of sodium potassium, and ammonium ions are critical factors which affect the extent of precipitation.A process based on ammonio-jarosite precipitation was tested in a pilot plant.An alternative method of iron removal based on the addition of zinc oxide calcine, to neutralize excess acidity, and the precipitation of ferric oxide was also tested in the pilot plant. The earliest caveman, very much a minority group, in the face of great adversity and person- al peril, had to take his livelihood by stealth or force of arms - aided by some degree of reas- on and ingenuity. He was pretty much a law unto himself. As time went on, his type became more numerous; and, after bumping heads with the- tough bloke who lived in the cave across the valley, he decided that perhaps he ought to try to get along with him. Perhaps he could trade some over-ripe emu meat for that `roo skin that he had tried to take. Then too, next time he wants a woman, he had better use a lighter club and just stun her a little - that last one was pretty badly bashed. Perhaps he should keep her around the cave and train her to keep the fire going, gather some roots, and skin the game. Those joeys of hers are kind of cute too. Of course they eat, and it would necessitate bringing in more food. So man gained increasing responsib- ilities to his family and neighbours. He domesticated animals, learned that he could cultivate certain plants that were palat- able and would supplement the meat diet, and found that he could modify earth materials to make tools - he became a grazier, a farmer, a miner and a manufacturer. He ceased to be nom- adic and community life came into being. This complicated life and made more rules essential.

Current classification of resources is entirely a subjective task. The various international reporting codes (such as the JORC Code) provide Competent Persons and practitioners with little specific guidance on the standard of work and levels of uncertainty required to classify resources into Measured, Indicated and Inferred. Furthermore, little guidance is given in the conversion of Resources to Reserves and the potential impacts on classification of uncertainties in the modifying factors. Working back from the intended use of the resource estimates, and in understanding the tolerance for uncertainty by the end user of such estimates, insights into the objective and requirements of classification can be determined. Following this approach a comprehensive set of (quantitative where possible) guidelines have been determined that will ensure resources meet the desired objective of each classification, and are consistent and comparable. The guidelines look at what is required for each step in the resource estimation process in order to ensure the final resource estimate meets the desired level of confidence. This approach provides a transparent, comprehensive, justifiable and largely objective method of classification. The implication of introducing such a guideline or approach is to highlight areas of a resource estimation that do not meet the requirements (ie drive the uncertainty beyond the objective) and then focus in on the risks that may flow on from that particular uncertainty, to mitigate or attempt to control those risks.

Australasian mining companies expect a high standard of professionalism from their metals exploration teams. They also have, increasingly, a global perspective, employing explorationists of diverse cultural backgrounds and operating in diverse environments. Human resource development (HRD) of these professional explorationists needs to address all personal facets of functioning independently and interdependently in a modem working culture, as well as the needed technical competency. Creation of a learning organisation to promote this development is critical. Organisational consultants can support managers and supervisors as mentors facing the wide spectrum of development required by the explorationists; mentorship and guidance counselling can then complement training in the maturing of professionals from technical competence to professional independence and interdependence. Empowerment and clearly stated expectations are keys by which professionals can learn efficiently and effectively.

Most mining projects will involve some level of financial markets price risk. This is because commodities are generally traded in $US. The project will also incur costs in $A and if based in Australia will seek to generate a return in Australian dollars. Therefore the project faces commodity, foreign exchange and interest rates risk. As a business you may wish to maintain these risks within your business. However if the project requires financing to be provided then the financiers will want to ensure that there is a level of certainty attached to the cash flows to support the debt repayments. This is achieved by hedging the financial market risks. Traditionally the hedging process has been based on underlying assumptions within project models, which incorporate views on the direction of the underlying price risk. These views can be formed in an ad hoc manner. Gathering information from a variety of sources including economic forecasting and modelling, technical analysis, seeking market expert views. However, given the historical accuracy of such forecasts locking into long-term fixed hedging arrangements can create an inflexible environment that can restrict the opportunity to benefit from the underlying volatility of financial markets.

The basic purpose of blast design is to produce rock in a size range which is within the requirements of the materials handling system. Once this is achieved, one would like to find the fragmentation which minimises total production costs. The former objective requires that fragmentation be assessed by some means, possibly as simple as counting the number of oversize rocks. To determine the 'optimum' fragmentation, however, accurate knowledge of the complete fragmentation distribution is required. The use of muckpile surface images to determine blast fragmentation is the only feasible technique when one does not want to disturb the production cycle; however, a number of problems exist with the use of images amongst which are determining size from a two-dimensional particle shape, estimating the fines which are missing due to image resolution, the size of a 'representative' sample, errors due to the distortion of particle images, etc This paper briefly describes methods of determining rock size from images and expands on the various errors which exist in assessing fragmentation by photographs. Methods to minimise and account for the errors are given, when possible.

Mineral exploration conducted over a wide area of the State during the period 1960 to 1973 has resulted in the discovery of a number of significant deposits. Base metals, particularly copper, have been of prime interest while, more recently, the search for uranium and coal have assumed import- ance. Expenditure of $27.6 million by companies during the period under re- view has located 580,000 tonnes of cop- per, 370,000 tonnes of zinc, 350,000 tonnes of lead, 24 million Kg of uran- ium oxide and 2,500 million tonnes of coal. A variety of other metals and non metallic and industrial minerals have been investigated in a diversity of geological environments.

Government geoscience may be categorised by objective under three headings: Applied Research for Geoscientific Framework Studies, Resource Inventory, and Technical Advice. In Queensland, the Department of Resource Industries is active in all three categories. Under the program-based management system adopted in 1987, three Programs, namely, Geological Survey, Mineral Resources Development, and Energy Resources Development and Utilisation, have geoscience responsibilities.Prime responsibility for geoscience resides with the Geological Survey Program, which provides a geoscientific framework for mineral and energy exploration and the development of the State. Simply stated, the Program goal is to provide geological information when and where it is required. Geological Survey work also encompasses aspects of resource inventory and technical advice, complementing the work of the other two Programs. This role has a 122 year long tradition, for geoscientists of the Geological Survey have been engaged in investigations designed to facilitate the identification and utilisation of the mineral, water and energy resources of Queensland since 1868.

One major aim of the operation of Aberfoyle's matte fuming pilot plant was to assess refractories performance in the process working vessel, a SIROSMELT furnace. High wear rates were expected and whether these could be tolerated was an important question. During operations a range of refractory types was evaluated in both insulated and water cooled furnace designs. Furnace operations enabled lining wear measurements to be made. Results confirm that existing technology can solve any expected refractory problems. Design aspects that should be included in commercial furnaces are shown.

During the design of a new production facility for a greenfields or significant brownfields expansion many design decisions are made driven by an unquestioning objective to achieve 'lowest cash-cost' production costs. In many cases this translates to a design and operating philosophy based on largest-available, single-line equipment. Although acknowledged as an approach that is efficient from an operating cost perspective does this approach always maximise shareholder value? There is an increasing awareness in the mining industry of the value of project flexibility, robustness and value options. The design of a new production facility creates a window of opportunity which should be structured to ensure that project value options and robustness are understood and exploited. This requires the use of emerging valuation methodologies, such as Value-at-Risk and Real Options, as well as tried and trusted NPV/IRR approaches. The paper provides an overview of the basis and application of these less well known techniques in the context of metallurgical plant design. Design guidelines that demonstrate how value options and flexibility can be quantified from both a risk and value perspective are presented. Issues such as use of single versus multiple line equipment, optimum cut-off grade and improved exploitation of the inherent variability of the orebody are also examined. Finally the management issues and approaches to achieving this will be briefly discussed; for example it is common during project development to drive towards increasing certainty as rapidly as possible to facilitate 'accurate' estimation of costs. Understanding and exploiting value options requires a project culture that tolerates, and revels in, ambiguity and uncertainty û something that would make many project teams uncomfortable!

The Porgera mineral deposit in Papua-New Guinea contains gold as finely divided, probably submicroscopic (1 um) particles dispersed in a pyrite sulphide matrix. Only 25-30% of the gold in pyrite can be extracted by direct cyanide leaching and fine grinding the pyrite does not increase gold extraction significantly. This work is concerned with the application of alkaline leaching at atmospheric pressure to oxidise the pyrite prior to gold recovery by cyanidation. The paper presents and discusses results of a comprehensive set of testwork using sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide alkaline media. Best results, at 60-70% gold extraction, were obtained with sodium hydroxide systems.
