Dust emissions by blasting are of concern to both mine operators and surrounding communities. The quantity of dust produced, and the effects of its dispersal depend substantially on geological, blasting and meteorological conditions. This paper provides details of methods used to quantify the amount of dust produced after collecting samples using high volume dust samplers, and the difficulties encountered in satisfactory dust sampling and quantification. Also described are practical dust reduction methods by using water filled ampoules and water filled balls.

Evaluation of reserves on a production scale within a shear-hosted gold deposit is complicated by the nature of the mineralisation itself. The 'payable' ground seems to be confined to areas with intense shearing, while the remainder of the deposit is characterised by 'background' mineralisation at a very low level.

Late Cenozoic ore deposits "Precious and base metal-rich" and " Sn-Ag-polymetallic"of Northern Puna are associated either with Middle Miocene dacitic volcanic-dome complexes or with Upper Miocene dacitic-andesitic volcanic centers. Ore mineralogies and their related volcanism are discussed. A strong link is observed between the Cenozoic Metallogenetic Province of Northern Puna and the Southern Bolivia Tin and Polymetallic provinces.

The influences on flotabilities of dolomite and magnesite with modifiers and influences on the function of collectors and modifiers with Mg+z Ca+2 were studied. The flotation results of artificial mixed mineral showed that using combined salified water glass and (NaPO3)6 as a modifier for magnesite-dolomite separation can obtain an excellent Selectivity.

This paper aims to build on the strong emphasis that was placed on safety in the Sydney AITES-ITA Congress in March 2002. It will do this by comparing safety records from some major tunnelling projects in Europe and Australia over a period commencing in the second half of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century and examining reasons for the apparent marked improvement that appeared in the 1980s. Further by looking at the relationship between this improvement and current trends in the australian industry by means of a detailed review of the safety record for the Northside Storage Tunnel project in Sydney which was completed in mid-2000. The paper will conclude by providing a summary of the progressive approach adopted by the minerals industry in australia and summarising the current state of tunnelling and underground construction in australia with respect to recently completed projects and potential major initiatives.

Rocks of all geological ages are present on the Australian continent. As a result of its geological heritage, Australia is richly endowed with mineral and energy resources. Due in part to its enormous mineral wealth, the nation is in the position of being a wealthy country surrounded by less developed countries of the Asian and Pacific region. Over many years Australia has developed and gained valuable experience in the exploration, mining and processing of a wide range of mineral and energy resources. In an interdependent world community, it is obviously in Australia's interest to cooperate and provide assistance in geoscience education and training to developing countries of the region.

The successful operation of a longwall face depends significantly on the efficient actions by support systems and on the ability to form a supported beam for a limited time span.The mechanical action of the supports can set up complex stresses in the immediate roofstrata.The cyclic application of supporting loads to the immediate roofstrata of a longwall face creates a special type of fabric disintegration in the rocks -affected. The mode of application and the distribution of the supporting forces is thus severely modified in a number of cases.The occurrence of true fatigue damage in brittle sandstones has been identified by studying the subcritical crack growth and microcrack development in the fracture-tip region. Several mechanical effects peculiar to the cyclic fatigue process have been identified. These effects had not previously been widely recognized. Damage in brittle rocks subjected to cyclic loads is shown to be distinctly different from any other damage processes under either monotonic or sustained (creep) loading conditions. The face support systems will frequently support rockmasses with mechanical properties not identified in conventional monotonic or sustained load tests.

This presentation addresses the sources and weighting of project risk in coarse gold deposits with relevance to experiences at the Ballarat mine and Castlemaine goldfield. With sample representation and reliability often a source of great error in the resource estimation of coarse gold deposits, it follows that this matter should be of greatest risk to a mining project - but is it? What are the costs and efforts required to best quantify the sampling error due to nuggetty effect? After all, the main problem in Victorian gold mining ventures in the current decade is not the amount of gold available, but defi ning which portion of it can be converted to Ore Reserves or more so profitable gold bars. The author postulates that greater risk to the project lies in the geological interpretation and matching resource spatial parameters to mining methods, than the degree of uncertainty related to grade due to nuggetty gold. Recent experience in the Victorian goldfi elds is that the investor market has already severely discounted Mineral Resources reported in accordance with The JORC Code - so if they don't believe in the capacity to upgrade the resource why should we? To this end, Castlemaine Goldfi elds Ltd at its Ballarat gold project does not intend to estimate its gold mineralisation for public release, instead choosing to focus on the geological interpretation and mine planning elements. So with coarse gold deposits, is your Mineral Resource reported with The JORC Code a glass half full or half empty? Our mining forefathers in Victoria had no predictive tools which could define resources to any degree and yet were successful. By over emphasis on the definition of mineral resources and particularly the sampling error, are we ignoring the basics of cost control, solid geological interpretations and maximum mining flexibility. In a technologically oriented industry, it is important to understand and apply technology very consciously to create competitive advantage. Technology is not an activity which is simply restricted to CSIRO or the research and technology department. Technology improvement is a part of everyone's role. It is a way of life - the technology facet of continuous improvement. For this reason, The AusIMM has organised this Travelling Technology Forum - a series of presentations about automation in mining. To make the message more accessible, The AusIMM had originally planned to take the Forum to four regional mining centres: Mackay/Townsville, Singleton, Burnie and Kalgoorlie, but only one seminar was held, ie at Singleton in March 1997. Seminars at other locations were cancelled because of insufficient registrants. The presentation by Andrew Logan of BHP Cannington was not available for the Singleton forum. The aims of the forum were: ò to heighten awareness of the key technologies and their impact in the minerals industry in the medium term; ò to foster creative thinking; ò to encourage people to broaden their technical and commercial skills and develop individual networks and linkages based on an interest in these key technologies; ò to share information on the application of these technologies in the industry; ò to promote an enhanced appreciation of the need for an innovative culture; and ò to encourage staff to consider post graduate courses in technology management. The AusIMM wanted to not only raise awareness about `automation in mining' issues, but also to get technology in a more general sense back onto `centre stage'. The Forum was generously supported by CSIRO, Western Mining Corporation Ltd, BHP Coal Ltd, Aberfoyle Limited, Goldfields Ltd, Novacoal Australia Pty Ltd, Pasminco Ltd, and RGC Limited. The program was endorsed by the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). Copies of the full papers are available from the authors, see `References'.

Water is a key resource input to copper heap leach operations in both quality and quantity. A number of recent developments in analysis of the technology have shown that water consumption can be optimised. The leach consumption has been generally considered in terms of minimisation of the evaporative loss by changing the application method (drippers or wobblers). Modelling of the irrigation effects on leach rate has shown that the poorer surface coverage from drippers has an adverse effect on the leach extraction rate. This is particularly evident in the early part of the leach. The use of different irrigation systems during alternate parts of the leach cycle can have benefits in minimising the water consumption without an unacceptable outcome from extended extraction times. By combining the leach rate effect with the evaporative loss estimates, an economic decision matrix can be generated to allow the operator to select an appropriate leach irrigation strategy, combining both irrigation delivery and irrigation rate. In the SX-EW plant, the total quantity of EW bleed and SX scrub stage bleed (both for iron control) can be reduced to an absolute minimum. The economic minimum may be different depending on the cost of producing the high-quality water used to replace the bleed streams. Adjustment of the SX process, in particular use of multiple entrainment control steps, can provide significant reductions in the total bleed and make up requirements.

In the course of reviewing grade control practices at the Marvel Loch gold mine in Western Australia in 1992, FSSI Consultants developed and implemented a novel approach to ore selection using a method to maximise financial return (the MP method*). The approach was based on improved grade control sampling and an ore selection method which directly incorporates both a measure of the uncertainty in knowing the true grade of selection units in the definition of ore, as well as the operating cost and revenue parameters of the mining operation. During the past four years, FSSI Consultants have evaluated and refined the use of this approach and have implemented customised variations of the MP method at seven gold mines and a gold-copper mine in Australia. The previous methods of ore selection at most of these operations were based mainly on polygonal - sectional methods of grade estimation. At all of the sites where grade control optimisation has been given a fair trial over several months of production, the use of the MP method has been consistently rewarding to the mining operations. The benefits include increased run of mine ore stockpiles and low-grade stockpiles and decreased fluctuation in the production grade. Most operations have also benefited from a consistent ability to improve production grade through high-grading of the increased ore production. The increase in ore production has the logical benefit of reducing stripping ratios, increasing mine profitability and mine life.

Gold mining in Waihi spans three centuries and five generations. Following the discovery of gold in 1878 the Martha Mine was developed and the town of Waihi grew up around it. Now, five generations later, descendents of many of the original settler families continue to live and work in Waihi. Many have returned to mining, in jobs far removed from those of their parents or grandparents.   Members of three local families were interviewed on video. This paper is a summary of some of the major themes and gives some insight into the role gold mining played in the development of the region and its continued its importance today.

The Australian mining industry has changed dramatically over the past 20 years in terms of mining methods, mining equipment and human resource policies. The industryÆs approach to safety and health in terms of attitudes, style of legislation, and risk management techniques has also changed significantly. These changes have had and continue to have major impacts on the design of underground mine ventilation systems. In some areas, trends are clearly emerging. In other areas, mine ventilation planning remains very æreactiveÆ and is performing poorly in terms of providing a safe and healthy work environment at a reasonable cost. New concepts involving the role of ramps and shafts, the provision of refrigerated air, æventilation on demandÆ and newe gress and entrapment approaches are likely to be incorporated into mine planning and operating practices over the next ten years. This paper discusses these and other trends and identifies some likely future developments in the area of hardrock mine ventilation.

This paper examines the practical and economic benefits of using bulk emulsion explosives in underground development mining; compared to ANFO, ANFO derivatives and packaged explosives. The key economic benefit of bulk emulsion is the replacement of relatively high cost packaged explosives with a bulk product. Key practical benefits include water resistance, improved coupling of explosive, reduced toxic gas production, increased shock energy and improved manual handling through the use of bulk products. Each of the benefits is proven using a variety of measurements and field results in order to quantify them. Where possible, dollar values are determined so that the benefits can be shown to translate into savings for the mine operator. The results show that, despite the difference in price between ANFO and bulk emulsions, bulk emulsions are most capable of delivering the lowest total cost of blasting. The savings potential of the introduction of bulk emulsion systems can result in an improvement in drill and blast costs for a mine operator, or a significant increase in profit margin for a contract mining company.

In 1939 Dr Neil George gave us the statement: Safety is a state of mind by which men are constantly made aware of the possibility of injury at all times. Is this statement still relevant? Have we been able to capture the essence of Dr GeorgeÆs statement in our current safety management systems and have we been able to capture the lessons from the past? Drawing upon 25 years of experience in the mining industry we explore what was done in the past, how this related to Dr GeorgeÆs statement and how the industry has progressed to the current safety management systems. We review the safety management system used by Roche Mining and demonstrate how it has improved safety outcomes for Roche. We then look to the future û are there new challenges? Are the current management systems equipped to cater for these new challenges and deliver continued improvement in safety outcomes? There will always be a desire to improve the industryÆs safety outcomes and so how are future generations going to achieve the improvement in safety outcomes?

The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. In the oxidized ores cllprite, tenorite, and trace brochantite have been found.

Mineral sands make up only 3% of the value of mineral production in WA. However, the distribution of mining operations, close to the more highly populated south-west coastal areas, and the wide range of land-tenures and land-uses involved has resulted in the most complex range of regulatory procedures found anywhere in the State's mining industry.Mineral sands are mined on private agricultural and "minerals-to-owner" land, State forests, nature reserves, coastal reserves and vacant Crown land. Local Government authorities, State Government departments and private landholders can, depending on the land tenure, be involved in setting the environmental conditions for mining operations and supervising subsequent rehabilitation. In the past, rehabilitation was predominantly aimed at establishing an agricultural land-use after mining; however, it is now necessary for mining companies to rehabilitate mined areas to a much wider range of end land-uses.

Gravity concentration of gold is an important facet of gold processing technology in Western Australia. While great interest has been directed at gold leaching technology and considerable developments achieved, gravity concentration has received much less attention and this paper provides an update on the current practice and developments that have been achieved in recent years.A survey of 72 gold processing plants in Western Australia was conducted in 1991 and some 31 questionnaires were returned for analysis. Of these, 19 plants were using gravity concentration and this paper highlights some of the features of these operations.

The occurrence is recorded of an indurated kaolinite claystone associated with red-beds in the Burralow Formation of the Narrabeen Group near Putty toward the north-west of the Sydney Basin. The claystone is similar in composition and structure to the Garie Member which immediately overlies the kaolinite-rich "chocolate shales" of the Bald Hill Claystone in the sofrthern part of the basin. Unlike the Garie Member however, the Putty claystone is lenticular and the associated red-beds contain abundant quartz and illite in addition to kaolinite.The source of the Putty claystone is not known. Possibly it is an extension of the Garie Member to the northwest or alternatively, it may represent fine outwash of detritus that produced the coarse-grained kaolinite claystones in the Triassic succession of the Merrygoen-Binnaway area. Although the material is suitable for the manufacture of aluminous refractories the limited size of the deposit precludes its commercial exploitation.
