Hematite ore has been mined in the Southern Middleback Ranges as blast furnace feed for the steelworks at Whyalla, by what was then BHP, since 1991. With the floating of BHP Integrated Steel as OneSteel in 2001 and the subsequent loss of key mining personnel, breakdowns in grade control methods and procedures occurred. These were compounded by changes in orebody characteristics and grade distribution leading to poor reserve recovery and poor grade control, both which resulted in loss of control of ore specification and severe deviation from the mining schedule. As a result, a total review of grade control, mining method and scheduling procedures was undertaken as well as a review of contractor quality assurance. It was found that sampling methods were poor and unrepresentative, grade control blocking processes were outdated and did not reflect the geology of the deposit, the ore mining method was outdated and did not respect the geometry of the orebody, reconciliation methods were being completed globally and were not reflective of individual areas of the deposit, and that deviations from the mine plan were occurring due to access to high-grade areas outside the schedule in order to bring stockpiles back on grade. Based on these findings, updated sample splitter systems were fitted to drill hole rigs, double bench sampling was implemented (2 + 4 m samples as opposed to 1 + 8 m sample) and a three-dimensional cellular grade control system introduced to better reflect the geology and orientation of the deposit. At the same time ore mining was changed from front end loaders mining on 8 m benches to excavator mining on three lifts on 8 m benches; this aided selectivity and respected the geometry of the orebodies aiding cleaner recovery. Reconciliation is now completed on a blast-by-blast basis, which allows for quick and easy identification of poorly performing areas of the resource model that can then be incorporated back into resource model updates. Regular daily and weekly meetings are also held with emphasis on the mining schedule to ensure no deviation from the schedule in the long term. These improvements have resulted in a lift in reserve recovery both globally and locally associated at the same time with improvement in grade.

The biggest hard rock double-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world, with a diameter of 12.4 m, is currently excavating the North-South Bypass, which includes a crossing under the Brisbane River, Brisbane, Australia, to relieve the often congested road traffic in the city centre. Ten years ago a 10.7 m Mixshield giant helped to handle the Olympic Games in Sydney linking the airport with the city centre for an improved transportation of fascinated visitors. In Shanghai, currently the biggest TBM in the world with 15.43 m diameter presents excellent performance rates; and in Paris a convertible Mixshield could be quickly changed from earth pressure balanced (EPB) to slurry type in order to handle the very heterogeneous ground conditions. In Madrid a 15.2 m EPB giant finished its tunnel job four months ahead of schedule. Large-scale TBMs have proved their economic and innovative potential to create the current and future underground architecture of mega-cities. TBM technology has made further large innovative steps in the last decade. State-of-the-art is a TBM for very heterogeneous ground conditions comprising hard and soft rock with additional high groundwater pressure. The machine concept is adapted to the various ground conditions and allows for a quick and flexible application. Ground treatment by means of additives developed to a helpful tool in this connection. To meet the special challenges of urban tunnel projects of nowadays it is of very high importance, beside applying highest developed technology of TBM, to have a comprehensive technical support during the project phase and to develop positive relationships between all participants of the project which last longer than only for one project.

The samples studied in this paper were derived from the iron oxide facies of iron formations (IFs) of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, south-eastern Brazil. The rich-iron oxide varieties of the IFs can be regarded as Fe-O systems because they consist predominantly of aggregates of haematite and magnetite crystals. The study was based on carefully selected samples in which magnetite crystals occur as isolated large crystals set in a matrix of haematite grains. Optical microscopy and an electron microscope equipped with an electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) system were used to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic relationships involved in the phase transformation between magnetite and haematite. The magnetite crystals in the IF samples are partially transformed to haematite and this process is also known as martitisation. This transformation occurs along the crystallographic planes {111} of the magnetite producing a characteristic triangular pattern of interlocking lamellae of transformed haematite crystals that are oriented parallel to octahedral plane {111}. This new generation of haematite is referred to martite because of the martitisation process. EBSD analyses show that the magnetite and the new haematite crystals, martite, share crystallographic planes of highest atomic density, eg {111} and (0001), respectively, possibly due to the ccp and hcp atomic arrangement of the two crystals. Stereographic projections of these two planes therefore coincide when the maxima of their poles are plotted. However, the crystallographic orientation of the haematite crystals in the matrix shows maxima of (0001) poles that do not coincide with those of {111} planes of magnetite. Consequently, it is concluded that the direct transformation to haematite crystals retains the crystallographic orientation memory of the former magnetite crystals, possibly due to the similar manner whereby their atoms are packed together in the crystal structures. On the other hand, no such relationships are observed between magnetite and haematite crystal in matrix. This suggests that haematite grains in the matrix may have been formed by other processes rather than those involved in the iron oxide transformation observed within the magnetite grains.

A hydrometallurgical process was developed for recovery of copper from copper-lead matte formed as an intermediate product at the BHAS lead smelter at Port Pirie. A plant utilizing this process was commissioned in 1984. The leach step involves oxidation of the copper-lead matte in an oxygenated acidic chloride-sulphate leachant. The results of laboratory scale testwork from which the chemistry of leaching was deduced, are presented in this paper. The rate of recovery of copper to solution from copper-lead matte depends largely_on the availability of oxygen to the sulphide surface. The optimum leach temperature is approximately 85¦C. Free acid must be supplied according to the stoichiometry of the leach reaction: Cu1.91 S + PbS + 2.91 H2SO4 + 1.455 02 = 1.91 Cu2+ + 1.91 SOj- + PbSO4(s) + 2.91 H2O + S¦ The grind size of the matte is of minor significance. Chloride concentration in leachant should be at or above a minimum of 10.0 g/l. Chloride acts to complex cuprous ions formed during leaching.

The presence of impurities which are electropositive to zinc in acid zinc electrolyte causes changes to deposit morphology and reduced current efficiency. Glue may be added to control some impurity effects, but assaying for animal glue concentration is difficult and seldom done. Measurement of the activation overpotential for zinc deposition by cyclic voltammetry is used in some plants to monitor electrolyte quality and control glue additions.The deposit morphology and current efficiency of zinc deposition from commercial electrolyte were investigated for various glue additions in the presence of increased levels of antimony. Cyclic voltammetry was investigated as a method of optimising glue additions in the presence of antimony.Scanning electron rnicroscopy showed deposits characteristic of the impurity element present and the glue addition rate. Cyclic voltarnmetry measurements showed some correlation between current efficiency and activation polarisation potential. The importance of using tankhouse electrolytes where results are to be related to tankhouse operation was noted.

The average installed refrigeration capacity on South African gold mines has increased by about eighteen per cent annually for the past 15 years; both the number of installations and their duties have increased. One consequence of these large refrigeration installations is that careful attention must be paid to the system for distributing cold water. In these distribution systems, devices which minimize the temperature rise of the water delivered to the underground workings and which also reduce the pumping requirements for returning the water back to surface are used. In this paper the suitability of these various devices are examined and with the aid of a specially developed computer program their optimum operating conditions are determined. In addition the optimum combination of surface and underground refrigeration plants is examined for a hypothetical mine at various depths and the importance of pump efficiency on total distribution costs is discussed.

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. Shallow interception of groundwater is a special dewa- tering form in the specific geological and hydrogeological conditions. It has an economic and technical effect. The roof of the Fankou Lead-zinc deposit is the Hutianqun aquifer made up of the limestone of the upper Carboniferous system. - A "water-bearing basin" is surrounded by the aquifuge and the aquitard below ¦0 m level at the Shiling Hill section in the Hutianqun aquifer. Based on the natural conditions, an interception gallery is excavated at -40 m level out of "the water- bearing basin", the other gallery excavated at ¦0 m level in the poor water-bearing zone of the Jinxing Hill. During 20 years of experience, the better interception effects have been gained.

Where vertical or near vertical faces are required in open excavations in soils and rocks, some form of stabilization of the 'cut is often necessary. Stressed anchors either alone or in combination with steel, timber or concrete-lagging are often an economical and versatile means of providing support. Stressed anchors are also-a very economical means of anchoring a wide range of structures such as dams, cranes, transmission towers, retaining walls, spillway aprons, bridge piers; and - stacks. The anchors need not be stressed always on installation.other than to proof load them. A number of examples illustrate some of-the more practical aspects of.the design and construction techniques used. No new methods of design or construction are involved, but merely some consolidation of the engineering design, soil and rock mechanics,thinking applied to the stressed anchor tech- nique.

Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A.G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue- gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 2.2000 F for the calcining step and 'a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat- efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. t. alumina per day heat consumption figures of less than 1.400 BTU/lb A12O3 were achieved.

This paper compares and evaluates the impact of income tax and value-added tax on the decision to explore for minerals or to develop a mine in four countries: Australia, Papua New Guinea, Argentina and Indonesia. Three aspects are considered in depth:- domestic tax rules applicable to mining projects;- taxation of foreign mining investment and foreign providers of expertise;- taxation of project finance (other than equity) from foreign sources.Specific tax issues discussed include tax deductibility of various costs, treatment of tax losses, special tax incentives, comparative treatment of various corporate structures, non-resident withholding taxes, and tax costs of various forms of project finance. The paper also illustrates the comparative impact of income tax on rates of return by means of a simulation of a mining project in each of the four countries. The simulation demonstrates why the highest rate of return may be obtained in Argentina and the lowest in Australia.Relevant features of the income tax systems in each country (at 15 February 1990) are summarized and compared in several tables annexed to the naner.

Nevertheless since the commencement of production in 1956, ilmenite has become the sixth most important mineral produced. The increasing world recognition of W.A. as a major' Iiroducer of ilmenite is due primarily ' to its low chromic oxide. ; (Cr203 content,, 0,03% to 0.04%, combined with a medium to high grade TiO2 content, 54% - 6 , supported by large reserves, a'. stable government with close access to good shipping facilities.. Ilmenite is produced from-these deposits at low-costs, enabling the industry to compete on world markets despite high rates for sea freights because of the distance from.major markets.

The demand for iron ore has increased dramatically in the last years and is forecast to remain on a stable high production level for years to come. ItÆs expected that the world economy is facing a stable continuous growth of iron ore to two billion tonnes and more over the next decades (Beddows, 2007). Furthermore it is expected that the existing and known high-grade ore resources will decline, and the iron ore industry will be forced to implement more and more advanced beneficiation plants. As a consequence of the more complex beneficiation requirements, there will be a need for modern solutions for iron ore dewatering that are reliable mechanically as well as cost effective and with high capacity per unit at the same time. Conventional vacuum filtration methods have been the most prevalent in fine iron ore dewatering. Product quality needs, lower ore grades, complex mineralogy and energy costs have resulted in iron ore producers seeking better solutions for dewatering, in particular pelletising feed. New advanced filtration methods have been introduced to the market. This paper describes how these modern methods are answering the needs of the industry. Performance of advanced dewatering technologies (pressure filtration and ceramic capillary action filtration) for iron ore applications has been studied, and the findings are based on both industrial and pilot scale experiences on different materials. For example, the results show that the cake moisture content of iron ore pelletising feed can be optimised more effectively by using modern filtration technologies. By selecting the most suitable and adjustable equipment, the effects of variations of feed material on downstream processes can be minimised and the possibilities of processing more difficult raw materials to high-quality pellets are better. Larox is a full service solution provider in filtration for separating solids from liquids. As such, this paper compares the new developments in this market area with the prevailing known vacuum filtration technology, but focuses on a comparison between capillary action filters and rotary vacuum disc filters (RVDF). The paper outlines the development in the control of dust in Australia over the last 20 years. Factors influencing dust make at the faces are discussed. The effect of high production systems is analysed. Changes in dust standards and results of dust sampling on longwalls and continuous miner panels are given. Research conducted on air curtains and water infusion on dust control on longwall faces is presented along with recommendations for future research. It is found that both dust curtains and water infusion can cut dust mak by 50" each when applied separately.

The conventional transportation system in open pit, a to u.* itc:,~> truck., to carry the ore along the ramps. Normally, the transportation distance increases greatly as mining progresses deeper. A new approach to overcome the above disadvantage is to adopt a buried roadway by which ores is transported by conveyors from the mining area to the outside dump in the shortest distance so that the production efficiency is greatly increased. Maintenance of the buried roadway in a good working condition is the key factor that determines the success or failure of the proposed approach. This includes the determination of support load, types and structures of support and other related supporting measures. The crucial problem here is to effectively control the load applied on the buried roadway in a certain range that the ordinary support can stand. Based on the theoretical analysis, numerical modelling and physical simulation testing using equivalent material, this paper studies effects on control of the support load by adopting certain measures, for instance reinforcing the surrounding rock and placing the extendable layer between the support and a rock mass. Furthermore, the influence of the dynamic load induced by the movement of heavy vehicles on the stability of the buried roadway is also investigated.

In contrast to the '50s and '60s, the period of the '80s and '90s seems likely to have low growth in demand but much greater levels of technological change. In such a climate there will be pressure on costs, productivity will continue to rise and competitiveness will be closely associated with maintenance of the most effective technology. The penalties for inappropriate investments, whether short sighted or mistakenly based on a particular view of the future, will be greatly enhanced. Accordingly, there will be a need for significantly improved anticipation of technical change and thus for better planning. Study of the funding and direction of the world's R&D effort can provide a useful input to the planning processes within industries and individual firms. Such a study also suggests some insights into the characteristics of those countries which have achieved substantial growth and high standards of living over the past two decades. These characteristics may offer significant reminders for our own development. The particular implications for the Australian minerals industry include the need for direction that is sensitive to changing market requirements and customer practice. This is not simply "more of the same." In particular it appears essential for both basic and applied R&D to provide a sound basis for the purchase and ongoing development of the new technology required to achieve international Competitiveness.

The integration of gravity, geomagnetic, LANDSAT data and geotectonic history is used to formulate an ore deposit model which can be used in the implementation of mineral exploration programmes. It may at first sight appear somewhat presumptuous for the writer to attempt to discuss a subject in which he cannot pretend to possess any special scientific training; but a sufficient apology can surely be found in the fact that a very large percentage of the accidents from explosives occurring in metalliferous mines is traceable to the ignorance of the characteristics of these compounds by the miners who have to handle them, and to their deliberate disobedience of the rules laid down for their guidance by the manufacturers, the government regulations, or the special rules of the mines.The only method which promises any possibility of improvement upon these conditions is to substitute reason and understanding for the rule-of-thumb principle which says "you should do this" or "you should not do that." In the one case his own knowledge and intelligence enables the miner to avoid any dangerous practice in the other his inclination prompts him to do anything which will save time, provided he is not found out or at best trusting to his memory to tell him what is dangerous, without the reasoning which makes that memory easy.Another evil of rule-of-thumb knowledge is that, from its very nature, it prevents adaptability, and so we find that old miners, who learnt blasting in the days of black powder, cannot understand why high explosives do not require heavy tamping, or because copper bars are permitted in tamping powder they should not be used with other explosives...
