The longwall system with caving is the most common mining system in Polish Collieries and the extraction is carried out simultaneously on several levels and in different seams. The extent and diversity of the methane hazard occurring is strictly connected to the specific geological and gas conditions as well as to the applied mining methods. Taking these factors into consideration the following methane drainage methods are applied as additional means of combatting the methane hazard in Polish gassy coal mines: 1. predrainage by means of boreholes drilled from the surface, 2. predrainage from stone drivages and devel- opment workings, 3. degasification of coal extraction workings, and 4. degasification of sealed-off areas/old goaves. Predrainage gave satisfactory results when holes were drilled from the surface or from underground workings, but only to depths to 300 m. It was necessary to adapt methane drain- age methods to the geological and mining con- ditions as gassiness increased with depth. The results of methane capture, both pre- drainage and post drainage were obtained by investigating several gassy mines.

When the mining and milling of 1100 Copper Orebody commenced, difficulties were experienced in producing a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 Orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in an inherently flotable fine pyrite and silica fraction. The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to'the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

The Mutooroo copper mine is one of a number of deposits that have been evaluated by Adelaide and Wallaroo Fertilizers Ltd as a source of feed for the production of high- purity copper oxide at their Burra plant. For this deposit, the technique of solution mining or in-situ leaching appeared ideal. The Mutooroo production circuit and the results of the process optimization and environmental monitoring programmes are outlined. At the end of the experimental period described here, the production liquor typically contained I g/litre copper, yield- ing in excess of 5 t/month of cement product containing about 80 per cent copper. The environmental monitoring programme provided clear evidence that there had been no un- acceptable alteration to the properties of the groundwater in the country rock surround- ing the mineralized zone. It is anticipated that the experience gained at Mutooroo will be of considerable help in the development of other solution mining operations.

The laws of detonation wave velocity variation in propagation process along the charge under channel influence are investigated widely in this paper. The result is obtained by blasting experiments. Bore hole is simulated by plastic tube or steel pipe (with outer diameter 45 nun, inner diameter 40 or 41 mm). Blasting experiment is carried out with a cylindrical charge of 32 mm diameter. The author analyses the characteristics of energy distribution along the charge under above-mentioned conditions. Reasonable initiating position and initiating direction are also analysed. A double-direction initiating method which consists of several initiating charges is put forward. The blasting effect of this initiating method when used in underground mining is stated out.

High interest to basic-ultrabasic rocks is ex-plained by their specific, sutural, geotectonic po-sition and by deep level of generation of ultraba-sic magmas. These two factors allow us to treat this group of rocks as valuable source of informa-tion about the lower crust and upper mantle of the Earth. Basic-ultrabasic xenolith series is another source of information about the interior of the Earth. Detailed studies of the xenolith series give valuable material to geologists as to how endogenic deposits are fed and what is their source.Besides, the interest is explained by attempts to understand the relationship between basic-ultra-basic complexes and deposits of metalliferous and non-metalliferous mineral material.Absence of genetic boundaries in manifestation of metalliferous and non-metalliferous minerals, their temporal and spatial relationship allow us to treat the minerogenesis of ultrabasic complexes as a result of one ore-forming process manifested in Koryak-Kamchatsky, Sakhalin-Japanese, Ryukyu-Korean and Taiwan-Philippines island arc systems which re-present, in the opinion of the authors, one eastern Asian chain of the Pacific ore belt (Radkevich, 11)87).

The key concepts relating to the calculation of recoverable reserves for selective mining in open pit gold operations are discussed. For up to 75 years large scale coal mining has been carried out within the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria. Withdrawal of groundwater from Tertiary aged sediments within the Latrobe Valley is essential to allow coal mining to proceed to depth. Water within the overburden layers, coal seams and interseams must be drained to avoid flooding during the mining process. The pressure in deeper aquifers must also be lowered to avoid floor heave, batter instability, and to maintain safe operating conditions as the mines develop in size and depth. The cost-effective management of the groundwater systems at and adjacent to the mining operations in the Latrobe Valley is essential to enable the efficient utilisation of the coal resource whilst minimising the environmental impact of this major industry in rural Victoria. Large-scale depressurisation and dewatering programs within the Latrobe Valley mines are managed through the use of detailed groundwater management plans. These incorporate:an extensive monitoring network which extends up to 60 kilometres from the mines; detailed mine scale and regional groundwater and hydrogeological models; and established operational procedures aimed at minimising capital and operational costs associated with the mine groundwater systems. Groundwater extraction system optimisation programs have been introduced into two of the mines with the aim of reducing extraction rates, improved risk management, and reducing operational costs by approximately whilst not compromising mine safety. This paper reviews the aquifer depressurisation and mine dewatering operations of the Latrobe Valley mines and illustrates the techniques utilised to ensure that high artesian pressures do not adversely impact on the mining operations.

The design of most underground mining machines shows little evidence of regard for ergonomic principles and operator comfort. Likewise, efficiency and ease of operation often appear to have been given little consideration in machines where ruggedness and simplicity have tended to dictate the configuration. Improvements in productivity are amongst the benefits to be gained by a different approach to machine design. The paper describes the philosophy and features of a test bed Load-Haul-Dump Vehicle undergoing trials at Mount Isa Mines. This machine is the outcome of a Research and Development Programme conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Queensland and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The diesel powered test bed features an enclosed, air conditioned cabin, with a suspended operator's control station and electrically operated controls. An electronically controlled hydrostatic transmission incorporating wheel slip control, is another innovation. The performance and operator acceptance of the machine has led to adoption of most of the concepts in a new machine now being put into production.

A novel solvent extraction process, called the SOHNEX process, has been developed at the University of Utah. In this process, the organic and the aqueous phases flow countercurrently in a horizontal vessel, and the emulsion between the two liquid phases is generated by high-velocity gas jets injected at the bottom. The gas jets are located at certain intervals along the bottom of the vessel with phase disengagement zones on either side of the plume zone created by the gas jet. The system is simple, having no mechanical moving parts or complex internal structures, and yet provides good contact between the phases with minimal backmixing. Tests have shown that emulsions with a wide range of specific interfacial area, including that typically encountered in mixer-settlers, can be generated in this process. It has significant built-in flexibility of operation including the control of the flowrate and hold-up of each liquid phase. The SOHNEX process overcomes the difficulties in the operation of conventional solvent extraction equipment such as mixer-settlers and column extractors. A major advantage of the SOHNEX process is that the energy of mixing can be closely controlled by adjusting the strength of the gas jet. This allows an optimal control of the drop-size distribution of the dispersed phase and thus the specific interfacial area. The process is continuous, and any number of extraction and separation stages may be built into a single vessel. The gas can be recirculated in a closed loop, thus eliminating solvent loss and mist problems, especially for high-temperature operations. The SOHNEX problem can handle solutions that contain suspended solids and that form third phases. The simplicity of the equipment and operation with low maintenance will mean much reduced capital and operating costs as well as low environmental risks and improved safety. The SOHNEX process has been tested for continuous copper extraction from a dilute solution. Calculations also showed that uranium and other radioactive elements can readily be extracted in a small unit of the SOHNEX extractor while satisfying the nuclear criticality condition.

Proper technical appraisal of a coal deposit and the determination of optimum open- pit mine design can only be made after detailed examination of a number of interrelated geographical and geological factors. Initial evaluation of the geography and the overall attitude of the coal measures can often determine the most likely coal mining technique. Conclusions reached in the early stage of the investigations frequently dictate the quality and quantity of particular types of data required from further drilling of the deposit. In many cases, insufficient information relating to the overall engineering aspects of a coal deposit is derived from drilling. Little or no attention is paid in the exploratory phase to such things as the specific gravity of selected overburden samples, floor conditions, clay content of the overburden and selected strength tests on cores. This is a direct result of geologists treating coal deposits purely in geological terms without sufficient consideration being given to the engineering parameters required for a proper evaluation of the deposit.

The CSIRO has pioneered the development and use of certain classes of magnetic resonance (MR) for mining applications. The MR technique is a radio frequency-based spectroscopy that provides highly quantitative measurement of selected ore minerals. MR has many inherent advantages for bulk sensing in mining applications, including deep sensing penetration into most bulk ores with the use of non-contact sensors that are robust and tolerant of demanding mine conditions. The highly discriminating nature of the technique also provides the very desirable attribute of robust and simple calibration, that can often be performed prior to sensor installation. Rapid sensing (within seconds) at very low grade (few hundred ppm Cu) has been demonstrated, as well as sensing at high tonnage rate. Besides sorting applications, MR may also be applied to preconcentration applications involving very large volume sensing including: (i) haul truck sensing using portal arrangements, where truck destination assignment may be dynamically determined based on the truck grade, (ii) in-pit gantries used for loading trucks that may similarly be equipped with sensors for truck assignment and (iii) deep mine bench sensing, recently progressed through a CRC ORE project, where local bench grade is determined at the few-metre lateral scale and at depth prior to blasting, to aid selective blasting and ore extraction. MR sensor prototypes have been developed for each of these applications and have been tested in laboratory or limited field conditions. To inform the value proposition for truck or bench sensing, initial analysis of truck assignment improvement based on an analysis of in-situ mine bench grade has been performed for a porphyry style deposit. The prototype sensors, preliminary results and future technology development and objectives will be described.

A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

Melbourne Water (MW) is responsible for a section of existing gravity trunk sewer servicing the Melbourne central business district, Docklands, Port Melbourne and other adjacent areas, known as the Melbourne Main Sewer (MMS). MW has determined that the 2.2 km long 110 year old sewer will not adequately service these areas into the future or provide the level of reliability needed. The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement project (MMSR) involves the replacement of the MMS with a new gravity sewer main and six key manhole shafts, known as the Melbourne Main Reliever (MMR).The majority of the MMR sewer tunnel is situated south of the Yarra River and will be constructed using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will be lined with precast concrete segments. The tunnel will be 2.4 m internal diameter and will have a 1.8 m diameter glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) sewer pipe positioned within it. This project represents the first large-scale, modern, mechanised tunnel project in MelbourneÆs Yarra Delta Quaternary sediments. There is little precedence known to the authors of similar scale tunnelling projects in these particular geological units. During the recent detailed investigation and design stages of the project, significant effort has been spent on characterising the geotechnical conditions along the alignment and predicting the effects of the new tunnel on the existing environment. Some of the key design issues that have been identified and managed through the design process include short-term surface settlement due to tunnel excavation and the predicted effects on surface infrastructure, potential spalling of the steel fibre reinforced concrete segments under full TBM ram loads and tunnel lining design in geological units with highly variable stiffness.Construction of the new MMR sewer tunnel is expected to commence in mid-2008 with a capital cost of approximately $160 million. Sewer system commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2012.

A special model of vertically loaded pillar behaviour is introduced to the general, multi-plate based, floor-pillar-roof system interaction analogue. This permitted analysing room-and-pillar mine systems in any geological conditions, including the effect of pillar elastic-plastic behaviour with strain softening. In the model, pillar instability is one of the important phenomenon, which may be expected to occur, and which the operator has to be prepared for. Thus the entire systemÆs safety is determined mainly by strong roof strata behaviour and therefore they have to be examined in actual stress-strain conditions utilising the appropriate strength theories. It was assumed that the so-called safety margin, representing the relation between load intensity and material strength, might serve as the basic indicator of possible roof instability development. Therefore, the safety margin may be estimated by comparing the actually computed components of stress-strain tensor with ultimate values characteristic for a given material determined in laboratory. In order to illustrate the effect of technological pillar size on roof strata stability, two different mining systems (methods of mining) in one of the æPolkowice-SieroszowiceÆ Mine districts was modelled using the finite element method formulated in three dimensions, assuming different materials within different rock mass strata, as well as a number of horizontal planes of discontinuity within the model.

Improving the understanding of the processes governing ground movements in and around brown coal open cuts is of significant interest for both operating stability and rehabilitation. Brown coal, lignite, is a low-rank coal that is best described as a soft rock, with geotechnical characteristics that derive from its organic origin. It is well-known that low-rank coals exhibit creep behaviour; however, little has been reported on the impacts of chemical processes on brown coal creep behaviour even though organic substances are susceptible to chemical alterations and mining processes will contribute to changes to the geochemical environment; around most mines, groundwater flow patterns are altered leading to enhanced surface water infiltration. Here we study the deformation behaviour of brown coal in response to ion exchange reaction. Our experimental results show that for different ion exchange conditions different characteristics of secondary compression are observed. With the addition of Ca2+, the ratio between coefficients of secondary and primary compression (Ca /Cc) initially decreased, presenting a minimum value at the concentration of 0.005?M, then increased significantly. This implies the importance of ion exchange process for the long-term deformation of brown coal. On the other hand, increasing Na+ concentration did not affect Ca /Cc values significantly over all tested concentrations. The suppression of diffuse double layer was still observed for Na+-treated samples as increasing Na+ concentration decreases Ca values. Grinding to sizes less than 80 per cent passing 20 ¦m in both primary and regrind circuits is becoming increasingly important in processing metalliferous ores, as many of the remaining orebodies are very fine-grained and refractory. The process of very fine grinding, however, is expensive, and neither the performance nor the design criteria are well understood. This paper presents some findings from a collaborative research program, one of the objectives of which has been to better understand and improve the performance of very fine grinding circuits. Data from surveys of an industrial tower mill grinding circuit are reviewed and analysed using the population balance models of the CS]RO and 7KMRC. The performance of both models with regard to changes in feed size distribution, ball load and feedrate is assessed using these data. From comparisons between pilot and full scale tower mill operation a prototype scaling methodology is also presented which shows promise in allowing the models to be used to predict the effect of changes in mill Design.

The current financial climate has given rise to fears that falling mineral prices and tight credit will force mining companies to cut back on production and new project development in a bid to cut costs and conserve cash. However, a prolonged squeeze on global supply can have only one result: a massive and potentially explosive demand for metals in the not-too-distant future. A resurgent global economy will also generate dramatic new demand for oil and energy, with a return to higher oil prices likely. How then should the mining industry plan for the future? In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) could lead the way as a partial or complete substitute for trucks. In 13 of 15 studies undertaken by Sandvik and Snowden, comparing IPCC with truck-optimised pit designs, IPCC generated operating savings ranging from US$0.18 to US$0.82 per tonne moved, compared to trucks. Trucks have higher operating, maintenance and energy costs than conveyors. New emission standards on diesel engines may make them more emission friendly but less efficient in terms of energy usage. With far more efficient energy use and cheaper operating costs per tonne moved than trucks, conveying offers an attractive alternative for the bad times ahead and into the apparent energy depleted future. When evaluating alternatives, a reasonable first step would be to conduct a scoping level study which analyses the differences in capital and operating costs between a truck and shovel operation and an IPCC solution. The study can also determine what type of IPCC is best suited to the particular mining application. The results can then be used to decide whether a more detailed study is justifiable. IPCC is a proven process that, with a fresh mindset, can make a significant improvement to mining operations. Sandvik (as an OEM with a full suite of IPCC equipment) can undertake these studies in ten working days in conjunction with Snowden or any other independent mine planner who knows how to schedule for IPCC. Because most mining industry personnel have been æborn and bredÆ on trucks and shovels û this paper focuses on some of the practical considerations necessary to make IPCC systems work that the Sandvik Technical Services Group has encountered during these studies.
