The Drake-Rivertree area lies in the far north east of the New England district of New South Wales. Drake is some 500 miles north of Sydney by road and 36 miles west of Lismore. Rivertree is situated 24 miles north of Drake.The Drake deposits were first worked in 1878 for gold which occurred in a very fine state in ferruginous gossan but at depth copper ore became more significant. The lodes at Rivertree, discovered in 1887, were worked for silver but mixed sulphides became more prominent in deeper levels.Several mines operated at each centre and each locality smelted its own ore.The mines at both centres were operated sporadically for many years though production was not particularly substantial.A number of the larger mining companies have shown a recent interest in this mining field with special emphasis on the Drake locality.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe two mining centres are situated to the north and south respectively of a belt of Permian marine sediments and volcanics similar to, and probably representing an easterly extension of, the rocks of the Emmaville district further west.E. C. Andrews (1907) recognized two stratigraphic units within what he called the Drake Series. The Lower Division consists of rhyolite flows, tuft's, breccias and agglomerates, followed by trachytic and andesitic tuft's containing cladochonns, thanmopora willcinsoni and other Permian forms.

During the past five years there has been a transformation in the operating costs which apply to narrow vein mining. Mechanised methods including sublevel uphole retreat and narrow vein cut and fill are now proven. Other methods, such as vein mining by horizontal drilling from a raise platform are currently being tried in Australia.The important factors which affect the cost and appropriateness of each method include: ore continuity, the planarity of the wall contacts, relative hardness of ore and wall rocks and the dip bf the deposit.Drawing on current operating costs from a number of mines and on recent feasibility studies, a methodology for estimating the costs of narrow vein mining is presented. These costs are then placed in their economic context with regard to ore grade and mining rate.

This paper describes a more generalised or generic approach for the mine ventilation network problem. More specifically, it defines the network variables in a manner that establishes the network problem in a nonlinear programming format. Assigned to each branch are three variables: air quantity, regulator pressure loss and fan pressure. Each variable is imposed with lower and upper bounds. Based on these, the generalised network problem for a mine ventilation network with B branches is presented as a system of B independent network equations in 3B unknowns (variables) with variable bound restrictions, and it is classified as a nonlinear optimisation. A nonlinear programming model has been developed for this generalised network optimisation problem. The model is formulated and transformed into a standard equality-constrained nonlinear programming form with given variable bounds. Then, MINaS (Modular In-core for Nonlinear Optimisation System) is used to obtain solutions. Examples are given to illustrate this nonlinear programming approach to the mine ventilation optimisation problem.

The Pic de Fon iron oxide deposit is a potential major new source of iron ore, located at the southern end of the Simandou range in eastern Guinea on the West African Craton. The deposit is hosted by banded iron formations (BIFs) within a supracrustal sequence, which lies unconformably upon a crystalline basement. The host BIFs and shales have been metamorphosed up to staurolite-grade itabirite and phyllite respectively. Stratigraphic relationships are obscured by polyphase deformation, although the sequence appears to comprise a lower phyllite(-minor quartzite) unit and transitional phyllite-iron formation overlain by three itabirite units. It is the itabirite units, selectively enriched to iron grades in excess of 65 per cent Fe (with low deleterious elements), that constitute the Pic de Fon deposit. Samples acquired from exploration diamond drill holes and outcrop across the deposit have been collected to investigate the Pic de Fon lithologies and iron-rich material types. Initial research techniques have included geological mapping, reflected light microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and ICP-AES geochemistry. The aim is to develop a model for deposit genesis that may assist future exploration and deposit exploitation planning. Results to date have identified a variety of hematite textures, which include recrystallised trellis, interlobate and granoblastic hematite after magnetite. In addition, fine-grained bladed to acicular microplaty hematite appears to both replace itabirite banding and infill porosity. Field relationships indicate a structural control of microplaty hematite development. Geochemistry and XRD results suggest a loss of silica with negligible iron addition during the conversion of itabirite to ore grade mineralisation. The enrichment process(es) is also accompanied by a gradual increase in K, Mg, Na, (Ca and Al).

The Wild Dog gold-silver-copper deposit represents a new ore-deposit type in Papua New Guinea. The telluride vein mineralisation is associated with a Tertiary caldera and has similarities with that from the Baguio district, Philippines, Vatakoula, Fiji, and the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado. The deposit, discovered in July 1983, has negligible stream silt and concentrate anomaly, and a float-train limited to within 300m of the prospect. The comparatively recent exposure of the vein system may explain the limited stream expression of the deposit. At least three major veins occur in the deposit; the vein system strikes north- northeasterly, dips 78¦W, and has a maximum strike length of 1350m. Veins are enveloped by a wallrock dominated by an assemblage of quartz-illite-pyrite. Four types of silicification related to multiple vein filling events have been defined on the basis of field relationships, drill-core intersections, petrology and fluid inclusion study. To December 1986 a total of 22 diamond drill holes (2304m) and 40 reverse circulation drill holes (1833m) have been completed on the deposit, defining a 750m zone of interest. The upper 30m of the deposit is oxidised. Much of the high-grade mineralisation in both the sulphide and oxide portions of the deposit is restricted to ore- shoots which strike parallel to the overall vein structure and are vertical to steeply westward dipping. They are defined geochemically by the lg/t Au cutoff and geologically by the relative increase in the vein density of auriferous grey-black sulphidic silica, the final vein filling event. Metallurgical studies and the results of close-spaced drilling have demonstrated the very good repeatibility on duplicate assays, and the extremes of grade variability of mineralisation over very short distances. The good assay agreement on duplicate samples .s indicative of fine, dispersed gold.

An investigation into the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces has been completed by the Subsidence Engineering Section of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Minerals and Energy. Changes in strata bulk permeability were also measured by standard packer tests undertaken before and after mining. The strata movement was measured by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were collected to suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors did not move significantly until the face went past the borehole. For subcritical extraction geometry with the extraction width to mining depth ratio of 124, the caving zone extended to roughly 9 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam roof. Tensile strains within the overburden tended to be much more closely related to stratigraphy than to the proximity to the extracted seam roof. Larger tensile strains were associated with layers of sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate, whereas layers of mudstones, claystones and coal underwent much smaller strains indicating subsidence in blocks. A beller correlation was observed between pre-mining Rock Quality Designation and permeability than between rock type and permeability. This correlation was less evident in the post-mining core logs. There was an overall increase in bulk permeability after mining.

The most recent development in gold processing is the increasing use of heap leaching for the extraction of gold from low grade ore, and old tailings dumps. The reason for this trend is mainly to do with economics. The advantage of heap leaching is the considerable saving in both capital and operating costs. However, not all ores are amenable to heap leaching. It is only applicable to well oxidized ores that have suitable permeability char- acteristics, and the gold recovery is poorer than by conventional process. In this study, an attempt has ben made to ascertain the heap leaching characteristics of Western Australian gold ores on the bench scale using multiple, appropriately sized leach columns. The influence of particle size, flow rate, column depth and leaching time on the rate of gold extraction was determined. The percolation rate of cyanide leaching solution was deter- mined with and without gypsum additions. Efforts were also made to minimise particle segregation, fines migration and solution channelling during leaching, so as to improve solution percolation, gold extraction rate and recovery.

Measurements of coulombic efficiency (QE) for zinc electrodeposition were carried out under mass-transfer-controlled conditions using a rotating disc electrode in synthetic acidic zinc sulphate solutions. Various methods of solution preparation and purifi- cation were investigated using reagents vary- ing from analytical grade to high purity; the purest solution was obtained-by dissolving 99.9999% zinc (Koch-Light) in sulphuric acid solution (BDH Aristar). Improvements in sol- ution purity did not necessarily increase QE, especially where apparently beneficial impur- ities (e.g., Pb) were initially present. The maximum QE obtainable through variation of temperature (T), current density-(i) and elec- trode rotation rate was established using a statistical optimization technique. The QE was determined principally by T and i, with significant interaction between these factors in the highest purity solution. QE contours, which gave an overall view of solution per- formance, were constructed and predictions about the response under conditions similar to plant practice were made. Wark's Rule (the dependence of QE on zinc/acid ratio) was obeyed in the purest solution over the range of composition commonly encountered in zinc plants. High concentrations of Na2SO4 and K2SO4, which occur in some plant solutions, were found to increase QE marginally ("1.2%). The intrinsic effects of individual impurities such as Cu and Ni were evaluated by additions (up to 5 ppm) to the purest solution. Decreases in QE were found to be minimal at the impurity levels normally encountered in zinc plants.

Metal contamination of sediments can be an issue for minesites discharging water. Water sampling of receiving waters is frequently undertaken. Sampling and analysis of sediment is less common. The variability of receiving environments makes the formulation of a generic sediment sampling strategy virtually impossible. Each situation needs to be carefully assessed before sampling is undertaken. This paper outlines the approach taken for one such survey.The main factors that need to be considered in a survey of surficial sediments are sample representativeness and sample variability. A simple data set from one site within a regional survey is used to illustrate the importance of these factors. The metal content of sediment is shown to vary significantly over small spatial scales.The variability associated with the spatial distribution of samples within a site is shown to be the most significant source of variability in the study. This variability could bias the results of a study if not planned for in the sampling methodology. Taking multiple samples from within each site (sub-site samples) and combining the data gives a more representative indicator of overall conditions than a single sample. The optimum number of sub-site samples to be taken from each sampling site was found to be 15.It is shown that a composite of sub-site samples can give a good indication of the average site metal content, while considerably reducing the sample preparation and analysis effort.

The Queensland Magnesia Project is based on a unique cryptocrystalline nodular magnesite orebody which required an innovative approach to process design in order to economically exploit the characteristics of the ore and produce a marketable range of high quality refractory magnesias for a declining world market. High quality natural refractory magnesia must have an MgO content in excess of 95 per cent with a very strictly controlled content and ratio of residual impurities such as calcium, silica and iron. The natural products compete with magnesias derived by chemical extraction from sea water or brines which exhibit very high purity but often lack other characteristics which are of value to refractory brick makers. Since start up in late-1991 QMAG has achieved a remarkable market penetration for both its deadburned and electrofused products with sales for the 1993/94 financial year representing 92 per cent of deadburned capacity and 138 per cent of original electrofused capacity respectively, all at a time when the world steel industry has been in recession.

The 1989 feasibility study of the chessy, france, copper, zinc, pyrite and barite orebody was based upon a classical flowsheet. The flowsheet included, three stages of crushing, conventional rod and ball mill grinding in series, and sequential flotation of four products utilising conventional mechanical flotation cells. To improve the profitability of the project the partners commenced a search for ways to reduce the projected capital and operating costs of the proposed development. This paper presents the improvements in the projected capital and operating costs as a result of design and concept changes. The major changes included: ò the simplification of the crushing section with the adoption of semi autogenous grinding (SAG) milling of primary crushed ore. ò the deferral of pyrite and barite flotation circuits until market conditions were positive. ò the simplification of the flotation circuit by the use of column flotation cells for combined rougher/cleaner duty. ò the purchase of second hand equipment. The result of these changes was to reduce the capital cost estimate of the plant from US$ 21 million to US$ 11 million and operating cost estimates from US$ 18.90 to US$ 13.60 per tonne of ore for a decrease of approximately ten per cent in potential revenues.

Cataclysmic or flood-like release of gas-charged brines, hydrocarbons and slurries accompanied widespread mineralisation of Upper Devonian environments. These are well represented in the Canning and Burdekin Basins of Western Australia and Queensland respectively.The Burdekin Basin provides particularly instructive vein structural sequences. These fall into organic residue to carbonate paragenetic sequences which are known elsewhere to record progressive decarboxylation. Fibrous veins indicate overpressure in fractures with organic residues, acids and gas derivatives driven to overlying groundwater flows. This combination of large flow rates and potent organic mineralisers led to extensive arsenical rare-metal mineralisation which is similar to that concentrated in Upper Devonian extinction horizons of the Canning Basin. Organic-residue mineralisation appears concentrated by certain hvdrostructures and targeted upon particular species. These controls need to be understood to guide modern management stragegies for mineralised organic and nitrogenous wastes.

The recovery of copper from a flotation concentrate using ferric chloride leaching has been investigated. The concentrate from the Horseshoe Lights Mine near Meekatharra, Western Australia, contained mainly digenite, pyrite and talc minerals. Over 95 per cent of the copper was dissolved in an acidified ferric chloride solution in one hour at 70¦C and ambient pressure. The pyrite and gangue minerals did not react. The leaching process was found to consist of four separate reactions and the shrinking core model was used to describe the process. The effects of particle size, temperature, concentration of FeCls, stirring speed and leaching time on metal dissolution were investigated. The apparent activation energies in the second, third and fourth reactions of leaching of copper concentrate were 28.8, 11.9 and 53.9 kJ/mol, respectively. The optimum conditions for the leaching of copper from the concentrate, within the range of conditions studied were: particle size 63 per cent minus 38 ¦m, a ferric chloride concentration of 1.48 M, a temperature of 70¦C, and a stirring speed of 800 rpm.

Research to develop the use of L.D.slag as an aggregate in road construc-tion is described. The chemistry and mineralogy of L.D. slags are shown to be generally similar to S. Yorkshire arc furnace slags, which have been success-fully used for road construction for many years, although both free lime and iron contents were found to be higher. Physical and mechanical properties are good but the slags' high density will result in lower "covering capacity"."Weathering" in stock piles is shown to significantly reduce free lime levels fairly rapidly although around 50 per cent of the mean "fresh free lime" content is still present even after two years treatment.

In the Mesel sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit, the spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration is controlled by steeply dipping faults and shallowly dipping lithologies. Hydrothermal alteration of carbonate rock is characterised by decalcification, dolomitisation and silicification. Intense argillic alteration occurs in a laccolithic andesite intrusion adjacent to decalcified and silicified carbonate units. Sulphide minerals (pyrite, realgar, orpiment, stibnite and cinnabar) accompany hydrothermal alteration and precious metal mineralisation. The trace elements Ag, As, Sb and Hg are zoned spatially throughout the deposit. Mesel contains a mineable gold reserve of 7.8 million tonnes at 7.3 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is preferentially localised in carbonate rocks adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion. The ore body consists of a central, near-vertical, high grade "feeder" system flanked by tabular, inward dipping, moderate grade "ouflow" zones. Mineralisation is controlled predominantly by two steeply dipping faults with high grade (>10 g/t) gold zones centred about structural intersections and fault splays. At September 2001 the beneficiation plant at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback mine is set to treat 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore, 40 per cent better than original design. This paper describes the steps, decision-making processes and innovations used to increase capacity at minimum cost. The plant was designed in 1979 to operate at 1133 t/h for 6000 hours per annum, treating 6.8 Mtpa. Sufficient suitable contact ore was unavailable and feed was finer than planned. The plant was designed with minimum surge capacity between multiple process units. It had never reached design capacity. In 1993 a study by Fluor Daniel to treat increased tonnage resulted in modifications to improve plant operations. Efforts to expand production by increasing reliability did not achieve the desired capacity. NJ Morrow (Pty) Ltd (NJM) conducted a technical audit in 1996 with process evaluation by Mineral Processors. Replacement of operator interface and PLC logic in 1997 made plant operation and diagnosis easier. Involving operators in logic development enhanced their plant knowledge. Fluor Daniel Simulation developed a simulation model of the process. Mineral Processors and NJM reviewed the model findings, recommended metallurgical improvements and developed preliminary designs and costs. BHP Engineering produced a detailed design with a cost estimate of $A34 million. After analysis and revision of the design, a $A10.4 million upgrade to 8.5 Mtpa was carried out. Detailed modifications to the process units, particularly the HM drum plant, allowed significantly higher capacities and improved metallurgical performance. The target capacity was achieved in June 2001. Further modifications are progressing to treat lower-grade ores.

From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gippsland Mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695 kg of gold, which at 1980 prices represents a value significantly in excess of $200 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subsequent occupants of the lease produced an additional 160 kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. When the mines closed, Walhalla gradually reduced from a bustling developed town to the present attractive mountain village so favoured by tuurriSts. A methodology for the fatigue life estimation of load haul dumpers, employed in underground platinum mines, has been developed and applied. This method entails the quantification of operating conditions by means of stress measurements. The measurements are then translated into a fatigue loading factor for a finite element model. The results of this analysis are then used to compare all the critical connections in the structure to detail categories in relevant fatigue codes, and predict a life in operating hours for the vehicle structure. The method was applied on a specific model and the results of this analysis were compared to actual failure occurrences with reasonable accuracy. It is intended that the methodology be embedded into performance specifications and purchasing contracts and that technology transfer to OEMs be achieved. Based on the experience of this project and other similar exercises it is estimated that structural life expectancies may be increased across a typical fleet of trackless mining vehicles (LHDs, drill rigs, utility vehicles, dump trucks) by at least 20 per cent.

Teller Underground Mine was established to extract ore from the Middle Vale Reef located on the eastern flank of Telfer Main Dome.The mine is located below a 150 m deep open pit operation. The ore body is shallow dipping highly structured, and is a main aquifer in quite difficult ground conditions.In respect of these conditions it was determined to access the orebody using an adaptation of coal mining and hard rock mining methods, with support being achieved using a combination of island pillars, rock bolts and timber stalls.The paper will describe these methods in more detail, then discuss the successes and failures of these methods when put into practice. As well, it will detail several factors whose influences were found to be greater than previously expected and stress the importance of good geotechnical advice.
