The Engineering Chemistry Division of the Government Chemical Laboratories of WA initiated an ongoing investigation into the possible utilisation of diatomites of this State. The work has shown that local diatomites can be beneficiated by hydro or pneumatic cyc- lone separator circuitry and that the better quality head materials can be upgraded by straight and flux calcination and associated processing to the equivalent of premium grade imported products. Western Australian diatomites vary con- siderably in quality, and the degree to which they can be upgraded and the yield of useful product are influenced by the proportion of impurities and the size, type, and degree of fragmentation of contained diatoms. Conseq- uently careful assessment of ore deposits will be necessary in order to relate ore reserves to planned production. The viability of commercial production from Western Australian resources would hinge on the establishment of markets - largely ex- port - capable of supporting a production level of the order of 30,000 tonnes per annum.

Recent exploration has established depos its of nickel sulphide in several areas of Western Australia. To assist in their develop- ment Amdel has investigated the beneficiation of many samples from these deposits and has estab- lished flowsheets for the recovery of nickel values by flotation. Metallurgical data are presented for the samples according to four factors which were encountered in their respective treatments.

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This paper presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rock-breaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days, during which there have been no reported collisions and 100 per cent adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the site’s overall throughput.CITATION:Boeing, A and Douglas, E, 2014. Currently there is considerable interest in the production of DRI in Western Australia to take advantage of intense interest from the Asian market. Most DRI is produced using gas-based processes and is used as a feedstock in electric arc steel furnaces, otherwise known as mini-mills. This paper critically examines the technical and economic issues of various gas-based DR processes available today and recommends the most effective and attractive processes suitable for Western Australian iron ores.

The strength and deformation of more than two hundred coal samples have been tested in the condition of triaxial compression. The regression equation showing the relationship between coal strength and pressure in the pores, as well as confining pressure, was obtained. The appropriate calculation for stress-strain curve was carried out. Further, an analysis shows the variation of coal strength and its modulus of elasticity in methane medium.

In November 1996 the NSW Minister for Mineral Resources, Hon Bob Martin MP, commissioned ACiL Economics and Policy Pty Ltd to conduct a wide ranging review of safety within the New South Wales mining industry.The review was a response to a disturbing number of fatalities which had occurred in the industry during the Minister's term of office together with a number of alarming near misses where serious failures in mining systems had occurred. Shortly after the review was commissioned, four mine workers died at Gretley Colliery near Newcastle. An inquiry is currently being conducted into the incident.

Gretley Colliery is situated at Wallsend, a suburb of Newcastle in New South Wales and is owned and operated by the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Ccnpany, a wholly owned subsidiary of Peko Wallsend Limited. The mine has been an efficient bord and pillar producer by industry standards. However, its continued economic viability was threatened because the bulk of remaining reserves lie in more difficult mining conditions and are of poorer quality. Alternatives were examined to improve productivity and allow Gretley to become more competitive in the current difficult market Environment.

Brown coal and its char were investigated as substitutes for petroleum coke in the manufacture of anodes for Hall-Heroult cells. The char, which had been densified by several techniques, was made into compacts with various binders and the anodic consumption determined during electrolysis. The results were an improvement on previous work, but the anodes still fell short of acceptability for use in aluminium smelters because of intractable microporosity. Some options for future development have been discounted.

The microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of cryptomelane-rich and pyrolusite-rich samples of manganese oxides was studied in repeated five-day static batch cultures over II weeks. Manganous ion was leached/reduced faster from the cryptomelane-rich samples (average 510 mg Mn2+/1/d) than from the pyrolusite samples (average 442 mg Mn2+/1/d).Cultures contained 20 per cent (w/vl) manganese mude, five per cent (w/v) molasses nutrient and the end-of-batch bacterial cell numbers were approximately 1010 cells/ml. The cryplomelane-rich sample incubates became more acid with time than the pyrolusite-rich incubates. The breakdown of pyrolusite proceeds in a relatively uniform way, while cryplomelane indicates a stepwise destabilisation.

In order to meet export sales requirements from 1983 onwards, Amcoal developed a new underground mine in the Witbank area of the Transvaal. The mine was required to produce 5 million tons of run of mine coal per annum giving rise to 4 million tons of saleable products. A description of the coal processing plant is given with comments on design philosophy and design parameters. Main features of the coal processing plant are the raw coal handling facilities, centralised control and data capture and the loadout station. The management systems applied during the commissioning period are described. The difficulties experienced and their solutions are discussed. Commissioning was concluded with an independent plant performance test.

Research cruises by HMNZS 'Tui' (1986) and RV 'Moana Wave' (1987) investigated the geology, geophysics and seafloor mineral resources of Manihiki Plateau in the central Pacific Ocean.Manihiki Plateau is a large (500,000 km2) mid-ocean platform that rises 3000 m above the abyssal plains of surrounding ocean basins (depth -5500 m). Its foundation evolved about 112 Ma ago by massive outpouring of basaltic lavas at a plate triple junction. The plateau is blanketed by a 900 m thick sedimentary section comprising (i) mid-Late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sandstones / siltstones grading upwards to limestones / chalks and (ii) -500 m of Tertiary nanno-foram chalks and oozes. Cores from DSDP 317 drill-site on the Manihiki High Plateau indicate that the volcaniclastic sediments contain native copper and some thin beds rich in organic carbon.

The Mineral Research Centre is located at Perth in the suburb of Waterford, adjacent to Curtin University of Technology and within a Technology Precinct which includes Technology Park. The Centre, constructed by the WA Government at a cost of $16 million and occupied in late-1994, comprises three separate buildings housing the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Curtin University's School of Chemical Engineering and the Mineral Processing Laboratory of the Department of Minerals and Energy. The emphasis on R&D at the Centre is primarily in hydrometallurgy as a result of staff expertise, extensive bench and pilot-scale facilities, track record with the industry and, very importantly, two of the occupiers being partners in the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy. Staff in the Centre have a long involvement with R&D agencies such as AMIRA and MERIWA. The hydrometallurgical focus of the Centre complements that of pyrometallurgy at the GK Williams CRC in Melbourne and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment in Brisbane, to ensure that the mineral processing industry in Australia has access to a complete range of expertise and facilities to serve its needs.

This brief introduction tries to introduce delegates to this conference to the almost unbelievable attributes possessed by many microbes which might be relevant to geomicrobiology, and how most of these remain unexploited by us. It introduces some of the terminology which will be used and tries to suggest that there are rewarding times for those who set out to discover the natural biodiversity of bacteria in nature. Although we have exploited microbes, usually unwittingly, and suffered at their hands for millennia, it is only recently that we have begun to become aware of how they dominate our planet (most of the earthÆs biomass is bacterial) and are responsible consequently for most of what happens here. A few can cause us harm and occasionally kill us, but most bacteria are beneficial, impacting positively for example on how we grow our food and in cleaning up the pollution we create. They are simply indispensable to how we live. They have been responsible for many of the geochemical changes which have taken place on this planet and play major roles in the transformation of elements so essential to our existence (Newman and Banfield, 2002). No one should dismiss them as minor players in our game of life.

The application of high pressure water jet technology to the drilling of longholes in coal has resulted in the development of a system currently capable of drilling to lengths greater than 200m. Field tests at the German Creek Mine have demonstrated directional control of the holes within a 0.5m section of the seam. Initial application of the technique at the German Creek operations is for drilling methane drainage holes. The principles, fields of application and equipment design concepts of several new approaches to continuous vacuum treatments of molten metals and alloys are discussed. Partic- ular attention is paid to the results of pilot plant tests evaluating a launder-in-tube method of 1. continuous production of refined zinc from a zinc-bearing lead produced in the lead splash condenser of the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF), and 2. continuous refining of crude cadmium. The former trials were not sufficiently encouraging to justify consideration of the process for commercial development. The applic- ation to cadmium upgrading gave very promising results; metal of 99.99 per cent purity was produced continuously at pilot scale (120 lb per hour) from crude metal containing 5.0 per cent Pb.

The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. In the oxidized ores cllprite, tenorite, and trace brochantite have been found.

Pinched Sluices, in a variety of guises, are used extensively for the separation of minerals according to density. In the authors' work a pilot-scale sluice has been constructed with provision for splitting the discharge stream into a number of layers. The composition and flowrate of the stream can thus be analysed as a function of depth and the results presented graphically. The effects of such parameters as total flowrate, pulp composition and particle size on overall performance can be clearly seen from such data.

The strength of coal mass saturated with gas is an essential parameter in studying the mechanism of gas and coal outburst,and its prediction method. Up to now, there has not been a method for determining the strength of coal mass saturated with gas.This paper describes a new method whereby the strength of in-situ coal mass can be determined and stored continuously and automatically. The simulation results obtained in the laboratory indicate that the new method allows a fast, reliable, inexpensive and convenient determination of the strength of coal mass.
