This subject is to be discussed in greater depth by Mike Sharwood. It has also been the subject of a mini-symposium by the Melbourne Branch of the AusIMM in October, 1993. The papers from this symposium were distributed to the membership late last year "to raise their consciousness and to promote greater awareness and understanding of the wide range of liabilities that may arise". Projects to be undertaken in remote locations require special attention with regard to constructability from the very first stages of design. This is to ensure not only that the project is compatible with the environment in which it' is proposed to be built, but that it does not require facilities or special construction equipment and expertise that is not available in the proposed location. This paper draws on experiences gained on projects in Alaska, Northern Canada, South East Asia, outback Australia, and more recently Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, where over the past 5 years Minenco has undertaken in excess of A$120 million of work on a number of different projects for Bougainville Copper Limited Although many of these projects have been close to large populous cities, which have been served by regular shipping and airline services, the locations have not had the availability of construction facilities which exist in major cities of Australia and thus can only be considered as remote locations by current day standards. As a result, every nut bolt and washer has had to be brought to the job site by the construction company. For many years explosive sensitized explosives were assessed using the ballistic mortar. The standard test used lOg of explo- sive initiated with a detonator. Over the past 30 years many non- explosive sensitized explosives and blasting agents have been developed. Most of these new explosives and blasting agents cannot be tested in the ballistic mortar as they are not initiated by a detonator. It is also known that all explosives have a criti- cal diameter. When the cartridge diameter is less than the criti- cal diameter a stable detonation cannot be produced and the explosive fails to propagate. For many blasting agents the criti- cal diameters are greater than 50mm and such large diameters cannot be tested in the ballistic mortar. The underwater test allows explosives to be tested in diameters greater than the critical diameter and to be adequately initiated with suitable boosters. The effects of the explosive on the water are easy to measure and the test provides a safe, convenient and reproducible means of assessing explosive performance. The reaction products are allowed to expand to a low final pressure. The underwater test can therefore be used to give a measure of the total expansion work of explosives. The detonation of an explosive induces a shock wave in the surrounding water. The profile of the shock wave can be meas- ured 3-6m from the charge and the energy in the shock wave cal- culated. Measurements over a range of distances show that the shock wave is attenuated as it travels through the water and the attenuation is different for each explosive. This makes it difficult to estimate the energy dissipated in the water between the charge and a single gauge. The reaction products continue to expand and displace water. The bubble continues to expand until the kinetic energy of the water is zero. The gas pressure in the bubble is now lower than the hydrostatic pressure and the bubble radius is a maximum. The higher external hyrdostatic pressure causes the bubble to implode. The bubble energy is the work done displacing the maxi- mum bubble volume against the hydrostatic pressure and can befound from the bubble period. It is not always easy to find a large enough pond for the bubble to expand undisturbed by the water surface and the containing boundaries. This makes it difficult to determine the bubble energy accurately in shallow Ponds.

This paper describes how water is being planned, managed and used in Queensland as both a precious natural resource, vital for healthy ecosystems, and as a valuable tradeable commodity, necessary to secure economic prosperity. Queensland has been progressively implementing a planned package of water industry improvements agreed by the Council of Australia Governments in 1994. The Water Act 2000 provides the legislative basis for implementing the COAG water reform framework in Queensland and sets out statutory water planning processes. A Water Resource Plan (WRP) is a strategic document that specifies water sharing and environmental flow outcomes across a whole catchment over a period of up to ten years. A Resource Operations Plan (ROP) sets out the details of implementing a WRP, including environmental flow rules, establishment of tradeable water allocations that are separate from land, rules for water trading, rules for operating water infrastructure, arrangements for the release of any unallocated water identified in the WRP, and requirements for monitoring and reporting. Water Resource Planning and Resource Operations Planning are progressing in priority catchments and aquifers across the State. Ways to obtain a water entitlement now depend on whether a WRP and/or a ROP exist in a particular catchment. Water trading provides for the buying and selling of water entitlements on a permanent basis where permitted under a ROP. Details of tradeable water allocations are securely registered on the Water Allocations Register, which is similar to a land titles register. Leasing and temporary transfers of water entitlements are also possible. Water brokers are emerging to facilitate water trading which aims to improve water use efficiency and move water to higher value uses. Queensland is leading the way in the implementation of the COAG water reform framework and the pursuit of sustainable water resource management. The StateÆs progress in this regard is increasing certainty for water users, while ensuring that considerations of equity amongst existing and future users and amongst various uses, as well as considerations of ecological sustainability and the wider community, are all taken into account. The mining sector stands to benefit substantially from these new approaches to planning, managing and using this precious resource.

Ranger Uranium Mines Pty. Ltd. operates an open pit mine and ore treatment plant in the Northern Territory designed to produce 3 000 tonne/yr of U308 in yellowcake from 3 500 tonne/day of mill feed. The construction of this project was completed in 1981, 12 years after the discovery of the orebody. Wright-Davy, a Joint Venture of Wright Engineers and Davy McKee Pacific, were the Project Managers and Designers of the $270 million ore treatment plant and associated infrastructure. The project was designed in Sydney in -an office integrated with the Client, staffed by 35 key personnel drawn from Wright Engineers and Davy McKee, supplemented by personnel hired for the project. The peak Wright-Davy workforce in Sydney of 200 contained 113 design staff. The design principle of using the best practicable proven technology resulted in a plant which easily produces its design output using ore types outside the design criteria. The structuring of the project systems and industrial relations policies contributed to construction being completed within time and under budget. The plant was built without any major industrial dispute occurring and no dispute arose due to the uranium issue.

Methods of measuring the frictional properties of rock surfaces, both by direct sliding and in triaxial apparatus, are described. It was found that for some rocks the coefficient of friction remains reasonably constant as sliding is continued but for others it increases considerably.The effect of fluid pressure in the surface of sliding was found in all cases to be adequately represented by the effective stress criterion. Some observations on sliding on two conjugate planes showed that the motion on the two planes may be very different, depending on small differences in the constraints.The coefficients of friction of natural open joints in bore core were found to lie in the comparatively narrow range 0.32 to O.68 although surface coatings were very diverse.A set of diagrams on the equal area projection is given which enables a rapid determination to be made of those planes on which sliding is possible in a given three-dimensional stress field. The influence of the intermediate principal stress on this is of considerable importance.

An experienced and reliable knowledge of fire fighting procedures is necessary for mine emergency situations. Since experts in this area are scarce the technology of expert systems lends itself as a suitable component in the decision making process. This paper describes an expert system that is being developed for this purpose. The expert system. RESCUE. is a knowledge-based computer programme which incorporates the judgement, experience, rules of thumb. mine environmental conditions as well as human intuitions in the mine rescue operation. RESCUE makes decisions such as whether or not the affected area should be sealed.' whether or not rescuemen should be withdrawn, and which fire fighting agent is most appropriate for the situation. The IF..... THEN rules written in the VP-EXPERT shell contains antecedents and conclusions based on environmental as well as other conditions prevailing in the mine. For example, the CO/Oz deficiency ratio indicates the progress of heating; explosibility trends are given by varying flammable gases C CH4,H2,CO) in relation to oxygen concentration, and barometric pressure falls may affect explosibility by increasing CH4 content in workings. The interaction of such numeric-based rules with others rules reflecting the experience and judgement of the experts assist the system to arrive at its conclusions and subsequent course of action.

The Ranger Uranium Mine is located in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics approximately 250 km east of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia (Figure 1). Mining of open-cut ore bodies commenced in 1980 (Pit 1) and ceased in 2012 (Pit 3) and milling and production are scheduled to cease by 2021. At the conclusion of mining and milling operations, mine tailings will be returned to the mined out pits 1 and 3, which must then be physically isolated from the environment for at least 10,000 years (Australian Government 1999). The final landform also needs to have sufficient mitigation measures in place to ensure that areas downstream are not impacted by erosion products from the mine site. The proposed post-mining rehabilitated landform will cover approximately 847 hectares (8.5 km2) which represents an area that has the potential to supply sediment to catchments and streams downstream. One method of reducing runoff and associated sediment is the construction of rip lines along the contour to slow down the runoff velocity and to also trap fine sediment and nutrients in the depressions to assist vegetation growth.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Lowry, J B C, 2018. A considerable debate has arisen regarding the best route for the beneficiation of iron ore. Supporters of jigging technology claim that although the technology is old, due to recent advances in jig control and a better understanding of the separation processes within jigs, it offers significant advantages over dense medium separation, especially in terms of reduced capital and operating costs and simplicity of design. Supporters of dense medium separation claim that this technology is proven to provide the best possible separation and that the gain in efficiency over the life of the plant, compared to that of a jig, will more than offset any differences in capital or operating costs. The truth is that both viewpoints are valid and that the choice is ultimately determined by specific characteristics of the ore being treated. Factors that need to be taken into account in deciding upon the correct option include the size/density distribution of the ore to be treated, the different size fractions which must be treated (lumpy or fines), differences in yield at grade, plant layout and capital and operating costs. Each of these factors will be discussed in detail and a case study for both lumpy and fines will be presented.

The so-called COMAT process provides a method for leaching low grade sulphide mattes in an acidic ferric sulphate medium in such a way that non ferrous base metals such as Ni,Cu and Co are substantially all dissolved; the concentration of residual acid and dissolved iron remaining in the leaching solution is low, and a large portion of the sulphide sulphur is converted to elemental sulphur. Thus the quantity of neutralising agents required to remove residual acid and dissolved iron from the leach solution prior to subsequent recovery of the dissolved base metals is greatly reduced. The leach residue and iron precip- itate report in a readily filterable form. In this paper results obtained on a pilot plant scale are presented for the leaching of a typical low grade matte in the manner describ- ed above; for the solvent extraction and elec- trowinning of copper, and for the removal of residual acid, copper and iron from the copper solvent extraction raffinate. Processes tested on a laboratory scale for the further recovery of cobalt and nickel by solvent extraction and electrowinning, and for the recovery of sulphuric acid and ammonium hydr- oxide from the dissolved ammonium sulphate salt contained in the final plant effluent, are also briefly described.

Over the last 15 years Indonesia has experienced a surge in coalexploration, which has led to the development of a major export industry. This coal exploration has improved the understanding of the geology of the Indonesian coal deposits. The main economic coal deposits are of Eocene and Miocene to Pliocene age, which mainly occur in Kalimantan and Sumatra and were formed from peat deposits in an equatorial paleoclimate similar to that prevailing today. Some of these peats were domed peats, which grew above the normal water tables, under a climate of year-round rainfall; these peats grew above the level at which waterborne mineral matter can enter the system, resulting in low ash and sulphur, and locally very thick coal. It is believed that such peats have formed the unusually thick, low ash, and low sulphur Miocene coals of Indonesia. Coal deposits of Eocene age are typically characterised by thinner seams, with relatively higher contents of ash and sulphur. The Miocene coals and Eocene coals both appear to have formed in lacustrine, coastal plain or deltaic depositional environments, similar to the modern peat-forming environments of eastern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan. The Eocene coals formed mainly in extensional tectonic settings. Miocene - Pliocene coal deposits formed in a range of tectonic settings.

The Kanowna Belle gold mine in Western Australia has reached a depth of 1000 m on the way to 1300 m. A feasibility study undertaken in 2006 identified the mining of E-Block as both technically and commercially feasible. One of the major risks identified in the study was the ventilation capacity, as the existing primary ventilation system would not support the production schedule for mining and a major system upgrade would be required. Failure to provide the necessary airflow would put the project at risk. A review of the airflow requirements and infrastructure options detailed in the feasibility study was undertaken to ensure that the assumptions and design were optimised. This review recommended a minimum airflow of 206 m3/s, but by acknowledging the necessary constraints imposed by mining at depth and re-engineering the mine layout to optimise the primary ventilation circuit, this requirement was reduced to 160 m3/s. This represents a 22 per cent reduction in airflow and a reduction in capital cost that will see mining at depth become economically feasible at Kanowna Belle. This paper discusses the processes that led to a redesign of the mining layout and highlights the importance of including the ventilation network in the optimisation process.

The Barrick Gold Granny Smith underground operation located at the Wallaby deposit is currently in a transition period from a near surface operation in ramp up mode to a fully operational deep mining operation with annual production exceeding 1 Mt/a. A key element in this process has been the project execution of the Wallaby Deeps project from initial scoping study in 2007 to the major production component of the Wallaby operation by 2013.The Wallaby Deeps project serves as an example of how an ongoing detailed study program can be integrated into a day to day mining operation assessing risk and mining application in a perceived challenging narrow vein geotechnical environment prior to mining. A detailed study phase to feasibility level is carried out prior to the mining each zone of Wallaby with mining approval only granted on study completion with full justification.A central element in this process is an optimisation study that utilising the Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) and Schedule Optimisation Tool (SOT) software tools developed by AMIRA Ltd PRIMO research project is used to carry out an NPV value based option study. This optimisation process being then tempered to reality by a predefined practicality assessment process utilising extensive peer review by operational and study team members as well as industry experts.Other challenges facing the Wallaby Deeps project include the requirement to maintain the ramp up production profile to full production by 2012 without disruption but with pressures of an ongoing geological resource to reserve conversion program essential for the study process and mining approvals and also development rate achievement.To date these challenges are being met with integrated planning and the value of the study program itself. Production in 2012 year to date is well on the way to annual production rate exceeding 1 Mt/a.CITATION:Rauert, N S, 2012. In New Zealand, platinum group metals (PGM) occur in three main geological environments of economic interest: layered mafic igneous complexes, the Dun Mountain Ophiolite Belt, and in association with placer gold deposits. Most of the layered mafic complexes with PGM potential occur in the Median Batholith. These include the Longwood (Permian), Bluff (Permian), Riwaka (Devonian) and Rotoroa (Jurassic) igneous complexes. Exploration of the Longwood Complex discovered PGM associated with gabbroic rocks. Best assays to date include a 1 m drill intersection of 1 g/t Pt + Pd and float rock with 3.0 ppm Pt and 3.3 ppm Pd. The Greenhills complex at Bluff consists of basal dunite overlain by wehrlite and gabbro. PGM occur with chrome spinel in the basal dunite and Pt geochemical anomalies have been identified associated with the wehrlite-gabbro contact zone. The Greenhills complex has some similarities to Alaskan-Ural type complexes.Reconnaissance exploration in the Dun Mountain Ophiolite Belt has identified PGM geochemical anomalies, but no follow-up work has been carried out. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, PGM were recovered as a byproduct of placer gold mining in Southland. Placer gold prospects with PGM potential include the Waiau River, deposits flanking the Longwood Complex and some Southland beaches.

The Ausmelt Catalytic Waste Converter (CWC) has been developed for use in the treatment of industrial wastes and for the recycling of secondary materials. Ausmelt Technology uses a top submerged lance system within a versatile and efficient slag bath reactor. High temperature pyrometallurgical reactions are carefully controlled within an oxidised molten siliceous slag such that metals can be extracted from waste feedstock for recycling, with non-volatile elements reporting to the slag, usually as oxides. Modification of the slag chemistry results in a final slag product that is stable, vitrified and is able to pass standard leach tests such that it is safe to discard or be used in civil engineering applications. Toxic components in the wastes such as organohalides can be completely destroyed and are prevented from reforming. Waste to energy conversion is practiced by the addition of a heat exchanger/steam generator in the converter offgas system. The Ausmelt CWC has been used for recovering zinc from residues and slags, treating spent potliner (SPL) from the aluminium industry and a wide range of electronic and other potentially valuable waste materials. Methods of monitoring the exhaust gases at different stages in the CWC gas handling system are discussed. The assay of these gases prior to emission is used to assist in the control of the converter chemistry to ensure the complete oxidative breakdown of the feedstock.

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the Illawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out. The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45% and 60% (mineral matter free). Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. I Coke strength indices increased with rank and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes will require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal. . T Use of- petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved. Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilised to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of-the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

This paper examines the importance of examining the relationship between biology and geochemistry when designing a biopile to treat alkaline soils impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. At a site in Nevada a large, unlined pit was constructed in a loamy sand soil and filled at regular intervals with a mixture of jet fuel, lubricating oils and waste solvents which were set on fire by the local fire department for training purposes. During its period of operation numerous chemicals were also dumped into the pit for disposal purposes, including dichlorobenzene and various chloroethylenes. As a result of these activities a large groundwater contaminant plume was formed. As a part of the site remediation process a decision was made to perform a limited source removal and excavate the top three to four metres of contaminated soil from the burn pit and place it in an engineered biopile. The location of the training pit is in a heavily mineralised basin where the background sulphate level in groundwater exceeds 5000 ppm. Due to naturally occurring biodegradation of the petroleum hydrocarbons a large portion of the sulphate was converted to sulphide which deposited in the soils as marcasite in the anaerobic soils. The initial attempt at soil remediation was to use a forced air treatment scheme that had worked well in small scale laboratory testing. Unfortunately, when attempted in the field on a large scale, marcasite reacted with atmospheric oxygen resulting in internal biopile temperatures exceeding 90¦C resulting in the virtual sterilisation of the soils without remediation occurring. In order to solve this vexing problem Pintail Systems, Inc developed an anaerobic culture that allowed the pile to be operated under anaerobic conditions. Within three months the biopile successfully demonstrated on a large scale significant biodegradation of the refractory petroleum hydrocarbons.

As mining undoubtedly influences the natural environment future challenges of copper ore mining are minimisation of land use in area and duration, proper land rehabilitation as well as tailings management. One possible solution to avoid these negative impacts could be the application of underground mining with backfilling tailings compounds. This approach would definitely increase the production cost. Against this background the project analyses the influence of an æecologically satisfyingÆ copper ore mining on world market prize and demand as well as on the environment. In the project 261 copper ore mines accounting for 98 per cent of world copper production have been examined. After modelling a backfill plant, analyses of applied backfill techniques were conducted. Afterwards a method of cost estimation was developed and then the backfill plant model was applied in three case studies. The results were transferred into scenarios. The work closes with a short discussion and gives an outlook to forthcoming research. The results presented in this work have been generated within the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 525 entitled æResource-orientated view of metallic raw material flowsÆ. This interdisciplinary project was established at Aachen University of Technology (Germany) in 1997 and is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The long-term goal of this research program is the identification of options for the resource-sensitive supply and processing of metallic raw materials. In order to address the sustainable development challenges facing the metals and minerals industry an integrated resource management system is to be developed and tested for important metallic raw materials. Case studies for aluminium and copper are being conducted by the CRC 525 in order to provide useful and efficient tools for decision makers over the entire life cycle of these materials.

Over the past five years, dedicated tertiary mining engineering programs have become financially unsustainable in Australia on the basis of undergraduate enrolments alone. The situation is worse in other minerals related disciplines and extends to the technical minerals education sector. This paper reviews the causes for the current situation. Indicators are presented which suggest that enrolment trends can no longer be attributed only to business cycles in the minerals industry but are also reflective of a fundamental shift in student interest in the sciences and resources based engineering disciplines. Reactive responses to changing trends are diluting and compromising the quality of mining engineering education. It is unlikely that the trends can be reversed or resisted. Tertiary minerals educators need to position themselves so that they can be responsive to on-going change. Two proposals are offered which aim to anchor mining engineering in a long-term sustainable manner. The proposals have a common educational component which is concerned with restructuring how mining engineering programs are presented and providing more flexible access to such programs. However, the two proposals have significantly different commercial components. The commercial component of first proposal is concerned with working within the traditional education framework of universities to endow a critical number of core staff positions. It effectively equates to fund raising. The second proposal is concerned with developing a stand-alone commercial operation around the education and research advantages of the global and multi-disciplinary university system. As a shareholder in this business, a university department would earn dividends that it could then use to support its education initiatives. This proposal provides a performance-based mechanism for supporting university minerals programs and has the potential to be cost-neutral. Both proposals are suited to resource sharing with a select number of international mining schools and to the incorporation of the other tertiary minerals disciplines under threat.

Distal air-fall ashes are widespread deposits that may record volcanism many hundreds of kilometres from their source. They are characteristically thin, fine-grained and have a low preservation potential usually being either eroded, or reworked and incorporated in overlying sediments following deposition. The most likely sites of accumulation are deep sea, lake and swamp environments where low energy conditions favour preservation. Post-depositional alteration of predominantly glassy volcanic ash is commonly extensive hampering identification of such layers in the geological record. As a result air-fall tuffs are poorly represented in the rock record and furthermore are commonly misinterpreted. Southeast Queensland during the late Triassic hosted active silicic volcanism and a number of fault-controlled basins in which coal-bearing sediments were accumulating. Silicic volcanics of late Triassic age are represented by the Brisbane Tuff in the Brisbane city area, the Chillingham Volcanics to the south of Brisbane and extending into New South Wales, the North Arm and Mount Byron Volcanics to the north of Brisbane, the Aranbanga Beds exposed around Gayndah and the Agnes Waters and Muncon Volcanics which occur northwest of Bundaberg. Stephens (1986) interprets these Volcanics as the remnants of a major silicic igneous 'province which he likens to modern continental orogenic margins. The Ipswich, Tarong and Callide Basins of southeast Queensland all contain coal measure sequences of late Triassic age that accumulated in alluvial plain environments. A Dicroidium flora is common to all and palynol.ogical evidence indicates a late Triassic (Carnian) age (de Jersey, 1975; Stevens, 1981). The coal seams of the three basins are characterised by their thickness (up to 25 m) and the presence of abundant thin, laterally persistent, kaolinite claystones (tonsteins) that show a marked similarity of morphology, texture and mineralogy. Detailed studies of the Ipswich Coal Measures (Falkner, 1986) suggest a volcanic air-fall origin for the tonsteins of the Ipswich Basin. Similar.tonsteins from the Tarong and Callide Basins provide evidence for widespread silicic volcanism during the late Triassic in southeast Queensland.
