Complete identification requires a determination of the mineral phases present and their textural arrangement. The use of Ditch Witch trenching for exploration has not been widely used and it is anticipated that the technique described will help stimulate more extensive use and new sampling techniques.

The natural semiconducting mineral rutile and sphalerite exhibited highly photocatalytic activities on degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The isomorphous substitutions of host metal ions by foreign ions and other defect states in natural semiconductors altered the band structure, decreased the intrinsic band gap, and then made them very attractive for solar energy utilisation. Our study indicated that natural semiconductor minerals might be suggested as a new class of cost-effective and solar light-responsive photocatalyst.

One does not need to travel too far back in time to find that the manpower requirements for new projects were focused mainly on: ò plentifulness of supply; ò cheapness of use; and ò fitness for use. These were primarily quantitative considerations and corresponded with the dominant view of labour as a commodity. Gold room clean-up procedure has been varied, so that half the additional silver is obtained as pure silver chloride, which.is converted to silver bullion for marketing.

A system of decline mine entries and ore haulages has been designed for the Mt. Windarra mine. This choice was controlled by the nature of the ore- bodies, the mining method chosen and the capital cost of development re- quired for production. Mine entries are being driven 4 metres high and 5.5 metres wide and decline at 11%, to accommodate diesel haulage vehicles of 35 tonnes capacity. The.Mount Windarra haulage system and the design parameters used in its selection and design are discussed, and general design and selection parameters are proposed.

R F Johnston 1 ABSTRACT The possibilities for bacterial leaching of refractory gold ores found in the Central Victorian region of Australia are examined. The behaviour of bacteria, especially 77iobacillus ferroaridans is outlined and the effects of these when they are exposed to pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite are examined. The factors which are particular to Central Victoria are outlined and the possibility of adapting a bacterial culture to suit the conditions is discussed. It is concluded that a bacterial leaching system is a feasible proposition and that it could enhance leaching rates and yields.
