Pressure cyanidation of the minus 10 micron slimes fraction of the Fimiston flotation concentrates for the recovery of gold values has been evaluated as an alternative processing route to the roasting and atmospheric cyanide leaching of the calcine. Laboratory and pilot trials have demonstrated that gold extractions of greater than 94 per cent can be achieved at cyanide consumptions of 12-24 kg/t and oxygen consumptions of 0.1-0.3 Nm3/t with total pressures of 1000-2000 kPa. Economic and operational assessment of several reactor configurations suggests autoclaves may be preferred over pipe reactors at treatment rates of 10 t concentrate/h.

A reliable procedure originating from graphic methods for the design of distillation columns is presented. the results of an experimental study aimed at beneficiating a complex ore containing bastnaesite and other rare-earth minerals, with associated barite and fluospar are illustrated. Owing to its minero-petrographic, physico-mechanical and structural characteristics, the crude ore is not amenable to classic concentration methods, such as flotation, magnetic and gravity separation. Therefore the technical feasibility of selective disintegration followed by size classification has been studied, whereby bastnaesite and the other rare-earth minerals can be concentrated into the finest size fractions. Leaching and subsequent extraction of rare-earth metals by liquid-liquid separation represents the final stage of beneficiation.

Accurate computer prediction of the muck pile produced by a conventional blast requires modeling of the physics that occurs during the rock motion phase of a blast. The ability to predict the motion and the subsequent muck pile can have a significant economic impact on the mining industry. Some of the computer programs previously used to predict rock motion employed polygonal elements with comers and sides to model the rock (Cundall, 1971; Walton, 1982; Taylor, 1983). This approach allows the elements to bulk because of the corners and the aspect ratio. However, tracking the many interactions of the comers and sides of the elements is a computationally intensive process. Several other rock motion computer programs were developed that employed spherical elements, (Schamaun, 1984; Gorham-Bergeron et al, 1987) but they lacked correct bulking mechanisms or could not be vectorized for efficient execution on vector processing machines. A new spherical element code called DMC (Distinct Motion Code) (Taylor and Preece, 1989a, 1989b) has been developed this past year. DMC was designed and written to take advantage of super-computer vector processing capabilities. The efficiency has also been increased through the use of spherical elements, explicit time integration and a new contact search algorithm. When spherical elements were chosen for efficiency, some physically correct mechanisms for capturing the bulking behavior of the rock mass also had to he developed. This paper will treat several mechanisms that were developed to allow spherical elements to exhibit correct hulking behavior.

The direct smelting of zinc sulfide con- centrates has been investigated by an extensive series of computer-based thermodynamic equili- brium calculations. The study covers both pure 7.n-S-O-C-N systems and practical concentrate- coal-air-flux systems. It is shown that for a zinc concentrate containing iron and lead sul- tide impurities, a 97% yield of zinc vapour with autogenous operation can be obtained under carefully optimized conditions. The mathematical modelling of rock fragmentation by blasting is one of the most difficult and challenging problems of applied mathematics. Not only is complex mathematics required but there is incomplete understanding of the basic physics and chemistry involved. The possibility of getting the physical basis of a model correct by simple mathematical and experimental procedures is demonstrated for the novel process of fragmenting rock by high-pressure arc discharges. While the importance of obtaining the correct physical basis for a model is emphasised, high-pressure arc induced fragmentation of rock is shown to be a powerful laboratory tool for the study of blasting.

Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.

Within the Mt Whaleback open cut mine the integrity of the final pit wall is achieved through careful rock slope design, use of rock reinforecement technology where marginal stability exists and use of controlled blasting techniques and excavation practices. By reducing the effective density of ANFO explosive within blastholes to around 0.2 glcm', and developing standard blast pattern designs for various rock types, blast damage to pit walls has been minimised. Accurate geological prediction is necessary for optimum blast design. Controlled blasting is undertaken where blasting occurs within 90 m of the designed final batter crest and hole by hole assessment of final limit blast patterns is undertaken before pattern charging. Shovels and trucks remove the bulk of blasted and dozed rock material, but due to the mine's variable pit wall slope configuration, bulldozer excavation of some critical design batters has been successfully Implemented.

Design patterns must consider the mining method, reinforcement economics, acceptable stability standards and mine production priorities.
