Precision surface mining is increasingly occupying a significant role in open pit mining. Improvements in technology now allow continuous surface mining of material well above 140 MPa (20 300 psi) efficiently and cost effectively when compared to drilling and blasting/primary crushing methods. These include the elimination of the use explosives and primary crushing, the ability to precisely extract the ore from the waste, or separate ores of varying chemistry and mine thin seams and non-homogenous orebodies cost effectively. In addition, precision surface mining extends the useful life of a mine by extending the mine boundaries. It can expand production capacity in existing mines and is particularly cost effective in greenfield start-up mines. Precision mining techniques result in higher percentage recoveries. This paper reviews several of these techniques for the Terrain Leveler« surface excavation machine (SEM), and shows their impact. Vermeer's current approach to precision surface mining is utilisation of the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. Several units have been proven in round-the-clock, seven day operations throughout the world. Among other innovations are design simplicity, stability, maneuverability, rear-mounted tilting drum and top-down cutting. The impact of these items are discussed in more detail in the paper. After a detailed analysis of the importance of machine availability on overall mine performance, Vermeer has extended its equipment line to include a direct-drive option for its T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. In addition, improvements in dust suppression are presented. While the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM is of optimum size and cost in small and medium sized mines, Vermeer has recognised that larger mines require larger machines with increased capacities. Vermeer will prototype the T1655 Terrain Leveler SEM later this year. Specifications of this machine and up-to-date preliminary results are presented. A discussion of the role of each machine size and driving mechanisms are included. Finally, the next stage in Vermeer's providing solutions to the surface mining community will be described - a continuous loader. The impact on current mine planning is presented using a detailed computer program developed for studying the impact of loading techniques and higher production rates on mine plan optimisation.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

Coal cleat and faulting influence failure, gas release, and choice of preferred mining directions, locations, and sequences. Unfortunately soil and younger rock cover restrict direct mapping of these structures ahead of mining operations. Aerial photographs of cover contain indirect indications of concealed structures in arrays of linear photostructures. These arrays are commonly too complex for interpretation by simple visual inspection.Analytical techniques applicable to complex arrays are illustrated for a covered part of the Galilee Coal Basin, Queensland. These techniques are: optical determination of sets in arrays of photostructures; correlation of these sets with sub-surface structures; filtering of m-rays for particular sets; detection of anomalies associated with concealed structures in the density distributions of particular sets; fitting filtered arrays to trajectories; correlation of trajectories with the regional directional variations of concealed structures; contouring of ratios of sets to discriminate anomalies associated with concealed fractures and variations in the total and bed thicknesses of cover; kinematic and dynamic inference on the basis of fracture-trace angular and spatial relationships.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Reclamation field trials commenced in 1985, two years before the granting of the Mining Licence. The level of pasture production on varying soil depths (0 cm, 5 cm, 15 cm and 25 cm) overlying both tailings and oxidised waste overburden was assessed.   After seven years, the rate of increase of N, C, P and S, losses of Sand P and pH changes were investigated on the plots where grass seed was sown into bare tailings. It was determined that on these plots it would take approximately 24 years to reach the original carbon and nitrogen levels at the mine site. Further tailings trials have been initiated to investigate alternative land use options for the tailings dam. Growth increases of 73% occurred in native species growing directly in tailings, and growth increases of 78% occurred in tailings amended with compost over the first six months. Pasture trials on tailings with and without a compost amendment have also been initiated. Research has commenced to investigate the restoration options for acid producing pit slopes. The early field trials have been put into practice with the restoration of oxidised waste on the tailings embankment. This is progressive with approximately 16 ha restored to productive pasture at present. Yields compare well with those of the most versatile and productive soils types investigated in baseline studies of the area before the tailings dam was constructed.

Two types of Mt Tom Price hematite iron ore from Hamersley Iron P/L were tested using a Humboldt Wedag Jones P40 wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS). The parameters tested were magnetic intensity (7000, 9000 and 11 000 Gauss), groove plate type (8R and 12R) and gap width (2.5 and 1.8 mm). It was found that at 9000 gauss magnetic intensity, reasonably high-grade and recovery in the concentrate were obtained. At 2.5 mm plate gap width, the 12R groove plate performed slightly better than the 8R groove plate. Further testwork is recommended to optimise the magnetic intensity, feed flowrate and pulp density, wash water pressure and flowrate with 12R and 8R groove plates at 2.5 mm gap width.

Turbidite-hosted, mesothermal lode gold deposits in Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Buller Terrane, western South Island have a similar geological history and genesis to the Paleozoic lode gold deposits ofVictoria, Australia and Nova Scotia, Canada. In all three regions the gold deposits are hosted by interbedded meta-sandstone and meta-argillite that have been folded and regionally metamorphosed to greenschist facies, and locally in Nova Scotia to amphibolite facies. The gold deposits are typically narrow, structurally controlled quartz veins associated with dilatant zones in reverse faults or fold-related fractures. The principal vein types include: bedding parallel or concordant veins, discordant veins, saddle reefs, and stockwork veins. En-echelon and "ac" type veins are sometimes also gold-bearing in Nova Scotia. The contrasting competency of the host meta-argillite and meta-sandstone beds is an important factor in vein formation, particularly for the bedding parallel veins, which are typically developed within meta-argillite beds or along the contacts between meta-argillite and meta-sandstone. Veins found within meta-sandstone units are generally discordant. The deposits in Victoria are well known for their bedding-parallel veins, saddle reefs ( Bendigo ) and leather jacket reefs (Ballarat). Bedding-parallel veins are also common in Nova Scotia , along with a few examples of saddle reefs. In contrast, vein formation probably occurred later in the deformation history of the Reefton and Lyell goldfields, with most veins being bedding discordant and more typically aligned with the axial plane cleavage of the folds rather than bedding planes. The quartz lodes in one deposit, Globe-Progress, strike approximately perpendicular to the bedding and fold axes. No saddle reefs have been recorded from the Buller Terrane. Mesothermal vein morphology reflects the amount of fmite strain, the strain rate, competency contrasts, lithotypes, and the confirming pressures to which the system was exposed. On the basis of comparable depositional depths and rheologies of the host rocks, a controlling factor influencing the development of different vein styles (and timing) might be finite strain, as exemplified by the tightness of folding in the host rocks. Folding appears to be tighter in the Victorian rocks than in either the Buller Terrane or Nova Scotian rocks.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. A significant amount of metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from iron ore pellets. To control the quality of pellets and to optimise pellet production, characterisation of both green and fired pellets is required. Optical image analysis (OIA) allows identification of different minerals, binder, remaining fluxes and porosity within pellets.For proper identification of the mineralogy, porosity and texture in pellets a high magnification is required, therefore each individual image covers only a very small portion of the pellet. At the same time the characterisation of pellets requires that the whole pellet is represented as a single object, so the size of the resulting overall image at high magnification can make it difficult to handle. A solution to this problem has been implemented within the CSIRO OIA package Mineral4 by combining images at different levels. Namely, to average out local irregularities, individual frames can be stitched during imaging into larger MosaiX images. Mineral4 further combines these MosaiX images into a single panorama image of the whole pellet.The proposed procedures allow the calculation of mineral and porosity spatial distributions, local gradients and abundance graphs based on the distance from the centre of the pellet. Detailed landform designs were completed for six (integrated) iron ore waste rock dumps at a Western Australian iron ore mine site to meet closure objectives and to optimise material movements for closure. The designs were based on specific physical and geochemical properties of waste material and the design was undertaken to enhance long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements, and therefore minimise closure cost. Construction of the re-shaped waste rock dumps have been completed. Following construction, surface material characteristics were found to deviate from those used in the design assessment. Materials present at surface following re-shaping were generally finer textured than those sampled for modelling. It is anticipated that the embankment slopes may experience increased rates of surface erosion compared to the rates predicted from modelling and used in design. The finer textured material is thought to be generated from exposing finer material that has migrated into the coarser matrix over time or that was not present in the sampled top surface of the landforms. This is due to armouring processes over time and this phenomenon is likely to recur following further wet seasons. The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps were subgrade banded iron formations (BIF) and chert, which are generally competent and geochemically inert. Some waste material was known to have an elevated risk of erosion but present in relatively small quantities. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert). Two magnetic parameters are proposed as a basis for the assessment of ironsands beneficiation. The parameters are determined for raw sand prior to dredging and for magnetic separator head feed over a production period of five months. The relationships between these parameters and the performance of the magnetic separators are examined to establish the value of magnetic assessment compared with the traditional soluble iron assay method. The results illustrate that the first parameter, true magnetic fraction (TMF). Has a value superior to that of soluble iron when relating raw sand grade calculated by triangulation to magnet performance. In terms of the relationship between magnet head feed grade and magnet performance, TMF and soluble iron perform equally as assessment parameters. For the ironsands mined during the five month period, the second magnetic assessment parameter, composite fraction (CF), is shown to merely reflect TMF and offers no additional information for assessment. Conclusions are that true magnetic fraction has many advantages over soluble iron in terms of time and cost of determination and that it is a meaningful and reliable parameter upon which to base all calculations relating to the mining and beneficiation of ironsands.

The E26 Lift 1 North Project took 37 months from the approval on 1st January 2019 to the commencement of production on 1st March 2022. This was five months ahead of the feasibility plan. When compared to the previous E48 Block Cave construction 12 years prior, which was of a similar size and design with ten extraction drives, crusher and conveyors, the E26 Lift 1 North project has been delivered at 29 per cent less capital cost. Key metrics achieved by the project include 12.7 km of development, 240 km of production drilling for drawbells and undercut blasting, 107 drawbells fired ready for production as well as only three Lost Time Injuries compared to 16 during E48 construction. The Lift 1 North Project Team has established a significant point of difference with the delivery being completed by the ‘Owners Team Model’ not Lump Sum or Turn-key. E26 Lift 1 North is now supplying the Northparkes processing plant for the next eight years. This paper discusses major milestones achieved throughout the process, modifications to processes from previous block cave construction at Northparkes as well as novel approaches to work to achieve the successful delivery of the project.

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated. TheSan Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t Au, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70 - 100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the 'subvolcanic complex'. At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine.   Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry- related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

The Porgera gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver-sphalerite-galena-pyrite mineralisation is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbonaceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralised zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralisation occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralisation occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralisation have been recognised.

This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer's perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

The main factors which influence disposal of mine waste under New Zealand conditions are identified and discussed: namely, geological conditions which produce soft weather-sensitive waste, wet and cold winters which affect productivity in such waste, elevated seismicity which affects stability and the need for water rights which involve public participation. The waste disposal scheme for the Martha Hill Project is described, thereby illustrating how these factors influence the planning of a current mine strippings and tailings disposal scheme.
