"IntroductionThis paper lists typical liner performance data for various grinding mills at the Noranda, Waite-Amulet, Pamour, and Hallnor mines, and concludes with a comparison of these data, based on wear per square foot of lined mill shell area. Flow-sheets for each of these plants will be found in the reference cited.General InformationTwenty-eight ball-mills and one rod-mill are used by the Noranda organization for grinding ore. These mills, which are shown in general outline in Plate IV, are all of the overflow type and have a cylindrical shell attached to dished heads.Most of them are serviced by hand-operated cranes and none by power cranes. During re-lining, portable tugger hoists are employed to lift the liners and, frequently, to install them in place.The mills vary in length and diameter and the ratio of end liner area to breast liner -area consequently ranges from 1. 6.75 in a 5 ft. by 14 ft. mill, to 1:2.28 in an 8 ft. by 8 ft. mill."

Bauxite resources in China are mainly diaspore ore with the characteristics of low ratio silicon to aluminum. In order to obtain high quality of alumina product, flotation process is generally used to extract the aluminum from diaspore ore. Small aeration rate is needed for bauxite flotation, which requires air to be controlled accuracy. In addition, productive froth from bauxite flotation is too sticky to effects froth transportation. Air-forced XCF/KYF flotation machines are helpful for aeration control, while self-suction GF flotation machines benefits froth transportation. Zhongzhou aluminum plant of China Aluminum Group (Chinalco) uses 7 series of XCF/KYF /GF combined flotation machines to process bauxite. Air distribution, suspension characteristics, froth flow velocity and Al2O3 recovery were investigated, to evaluate the performance of flotation machines in one series and determine recovery contribution of each cell to the entire flotation circuit.The air distribution degree varies from 3 to 4, which is enough for bauxite floatation process. Froth in the tank could flow smoothly with a flow velocity of 2.4m/min. The recovery of the first KYF-40 flotation cell is the largest. Flotation concentrate of Al2O3 is up to 64.29%, the total recovery is about 75%, and the ratio of Al/Si has reached 10.4.

Fieldwork in the Meguma of Nova Scotia and Archean equivalents shows that bedding-parallel quartz lode gold veins (LVs) commonly occur at the top of graded elastic sequences. We define a "gold cycle" (GC) by analogy with Bouma turbidites and show that most "shear zones" and "lamprophyres" correspond to the upper pelagic-pelitic (E) division. We describe GCs from Archean Chester Twp, ON; Elmhirst, ON; Bourlamaque, QC; "intrusions" and interpret them as crystal tuffs and tuff-breccias. Extensive early Archean pyroclastic volcanism is implied: the genesis of trondjhemite-tonalite-granodiorite (TTG) rocks must be re-examined. The geopetal nature and asymmetric alteration of LVs indicates genesis from sea-floor hydrothermal vents. Textures suggest that often quartz was deposited as a gel. Vent geometry (fracture, point source or diffuse seep), bottom topography and vent spacing is reflected in wade-thickness plots. GC facing directions survive metamorphism. The Bourlamaque batholith was a flat-lying sheet of quartz-feldspar-hornblende crystal tuff, and isoclinal folding has repeated one or more gold-bearing horizons. Syngenesis clarifies and simplifies LV formation with major implications for models. Exploration becomes more cost-effective. Basin analysis, whole rock geochemistry, ore lens geometry and vent spacing can be used.

INTRODUCTION A DISTILLATION process offers one of the most effective methods of refining metals. Its use is particularly attractive in the case of reactive metals which are not readily treated by pyrometallurgical or electrolytic methods. The 1ow vapour pressure of most metals severely restricts the applicability of the disti1lation process and only one or two metals may be effectively treated under atmospheric pressure at a reasonable temperature. If operations are carried out under reduced pressure several additional metals may be effectively distilled. Table I shows the vapour pressure of a number of metals together with a value of the free energy of formation of their ?oxides. Zinc and cadmium head the list and for many years? they have .been effectively refined by distillation. Sodium, magnesium, and calcium follow in descending order, and they may be distilled readily in vacuo and with difficulty at atmospheric pressure. Sodium, which is not of great metallurgical interest, is not considered. Magnesium has recently been produced in considerable tonnages by distillation methods ( 3). This paper describes the vacuum distillation of magnesium and calcium, their separation from each other, and their separation from less volatile impurities.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1924. I endeavoured to present the position held by the mineral industries in the commercial life of this country. The facts and figures were presented at that time in a detached way. Since then, however, I have made some attempt to analyze them in order to determine the causes for that position and to draw some conclusions as to the future of the mining industry. As everyone knows, our trade figures are very often used in political discussion, especially in discussion of tariff policy. It would be entirely out of order for me to say anything touching the tariff issue and I want to have it clearly understood that, in my opinion, the material I am about to present contains not a single statement or conclusion which anyone would be warranted in using as an argument for either a lower or a higher tariff or for tariff changes of any kind. As a starting point, let me re-state, very sketchily, Canada's general situation in external trade. In the last calendar year, 1924, we sold Canadian merchandise of all kinds to other countries to the value of $1,045,000,000 in round figures. Our purchases abroad reached about $893,000,000. Thus our sales exceeded our purchases by roughly $152,000,000. In other words, we had what is known as a 'favourable balance of trade' - one of the biggest favourable balances we have ever had in our history. The proceeds of our sales of Canadian products enabled us to meet the bills for all our purchases of foreign commodities and, in addition, placed a large surplus to our credit with which to offset our interest charges and other obligations abroad.

The pre-fabricated outdoor rooms are often utilised near the mines and construction sites for office purposes. The paper has presented modelling and simulation results of the integration of commercially available glass coated photovoltaic (PV) energy technology and solar ventilation technology into a pre-fabricated outdoor room. The pre-fabricated outdoor room has been setup at Concordia University, Montréal for full scale testing of the glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation. The computer simulation model has been developed for PV modules installed on a double wall wooden frame in an outdoor room based on its preliminary field testing. The testing apparatus was a wooden frame assembly of double wall with solar air ventilation: two adjacent glass coated PV modules, air column and plywood board filled with polystyrene. The measurement data collected from various sensors were: solar intensity, ambient air temperature, room air temperature, electric power, surface temperatures of PV modules and plywood board, air velocities and air temperatures in the air column. The enhancement in the air velocity of the air column was achieved with an exhaust fan fixed in an outdoor room. The simulation model is used to perform the two dimensional energy analyses with applied one dimensional solution of steady state heat conduction equations. The simulation model is based on conjugate heat exchange paths with network boundary conditions of convection, radiation heat exchange and solar air ventilation heat transport. The model parameters are based on measured values of ambient air temperature, room air temperature, air velocity at outlet of air column in double wall, electric power and available solar intensity. The model has predicted fairly well energy performance of glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation installed on a wooden frame. The model is also useful for predicting heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) requirements for the pre-fabricated outdoor rooms.

"This presentation reviews three continuous centrifuge separators, the Falcon-C, Kelsey Jig and Multi-Gravity Separator, two units with possible synergies with centrifuges, the In-Line Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor, and two centrifuge prototypes, the continuous Knelson and the Altair Jig. Typical applications, potential problems, promising synergies and general concentration mechanisms are discussed. A general discussion on the sources of information, the nature of the fluidization water flow, test work for potential centrifuge separations and the early life cycle of new technology, using centrifuge separators as an example, follows. The semi-batch Knelson Concentrator has probably received the most exposure, but it is rather because of the shear number of units sold than the width and breath of its applicability. It excels at recovery very dense minerals in very small concentrations, and has become a workhorse of the gold industry. Falcon’s Super-Bowl comes a distant second, with very similar applications. A number of copycats are available, and are generically identified as “Knelsons.” This presentation will not address these units explicitly, but as possible synergies."

The iron ores of the Kiruna mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality except for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998, LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF (laser-induced fluorescence) analyzers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground, the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.

"INTRODUCTIONThe removal of water or liquid from slurries and solutions is a procedure generally present in many process industries. This has prompted the development of many mechanical and thermal devices with which, I have no doubt you are al1 familiar.In the mining industry, beneficiation of ores necessitates ' the removal of water or other 1iquid from the concentrate material. The most common method of accomplishing this is by means of thickeners, vacuum filters and rotary dryers, generally all three and in that order;The use of spray drying techniques to obtain the same end has many advantages and these will be outlined here.THE PRINCIPLE OF SPRAY DRYINGA Spray Dryer consists of a cyclone shaped chamber where hot air and atomized concentrate are introduced in the upper section. (Sec figure No. 1). Efficient mixing of these two streams produce dry concentrate and moist spent air, both of which are removed from the base of the chamber.Thermal dewatering involves the product ion of heat and spray drying has no special requirements in this area. Generally a direct fired air heater is used and the products of combustion whether they stem from the use of gas, oil or coal fuel go into the spray dryer along with quench or dilution air which is used to reduce the combustion gases to the desired temperature. This generally lies in the range of 1,000 to 1,600° F. In spite of these relatively high inlet temperatures, the spray drying process eliminates the need for refractory lining or indeed any special heat resistant metals except on the air inlet ducting. Waste heat may also be used even if a significant amount of contamination is present."

Adsorption/thermal desorption with sorbent cartridges and analytical method using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed for the determination of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6) emitted from primary aluminum smelters. A customized cartridge was built like a packed column with a stainless steel tube filled with a specific resin. The optimization of adsorption and desorption parameters was carried out to support the PFC sampling for all aluminum production technologies. The proposed method showed good linearity for concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ppbv for CF4 and from 5 to 500 ppbv for C2F6 with correlation coefficients above 0.999. In certain conditions, the detection limits of the analytical method reached 0.3 ppbv for CF4 and 0.15 ppbv for C2F6- Using this methodology, a field campaign was carried out using a sequential sampler allowing the simultaneous sampling of PFC with cartridges and sampling bags. The results showed no significant difference (t-test) between the two sampling technologies and no breakthrough was observed from the cartridges .

In 1971 the government of British Columbia issued a permit for the Island Copper Mine to commence disposal of 33,000 tons per day of mine tailings into Rupert Inlet, a marine fjord on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. There was considerable controversy surrounding the development, public hearings were held, and as a requirement of the permit the company was obliged to carry out a comprehensive environmental monitoring program. The results of this program provide a thorough assessment of the environmental impact of submarine tailings disposal over the 24-year life of the mine. Following closure in December, 1995, the monitoring program continued for three years to determine the extent of marine ecosystem recovery and re-colonization. It is apparent from the findings of the monitoring program that the mine tailings were dispersed more widely than was originally predicted. It is also clear that widespread heavy metal contamination has not materialized. In retrospect it appears that submarine tailings disposal has resulted in far less severe environmental impacts than if the alternative of land disposal had been adopted. This review highlights significant aspects of public policy decision-making, design of environmental monitoring programs, and questions of interpretation of monitoring program data.

"As part of a major reconstruction and expansion of the Majdanpek Copper Mine, an investigation and optimization of the flotation collector regime was undertaken. The flotation response of the major minerals to various reagents and the effect of pulp chemistry was studied from both a fundamental and practical point of view. These studies led to plant trials and the eventual adoption of a modified collector suite which improved both copper and gold recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe Majdanpek Copper Mine processes 40,000 tons per day of ore containing about 0.43% cu. In addition to copper, the ore also contains recoverable quantities of molybdenite and gold. The mine has been in operation since 1961 and is the largest in Yugoslavia. It is currently undergoing major reconstruction and expansion. The flowsheet of the Majdanpek concentrator is shown on Figure 1.The ore body is variable in composition and changes in mill feed require proper control of operating variables to achieve the optimum metallurgical results. A detailed study including grindability, flotation response, and solid-liquid separation was carried out on several samples of the ore. Flotation response and the choice of reagent chemistry were found to be very important in achieving the highest recoveries of metal values. An automatic reagent control scheme insured that optimum dosages were used in the plant.The flotation collectors used at the present time include sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX), AERO 3302 Promoter and AERO 5415 Promoter. The addition of AERO 5415 to the reagent suite is a recent development and was based on the favorable results obtained in the extensive laboratory testing program conducted to establish the optimum reagent combination and dosages. Subsequent plant tests confirmed that AERO 5415 provided significant improvements in copper and gold recoveries. A description of the mineralogy of the Majdanpek ore and details of laboratory and plant metallurgical data are given in this paper. The chemistry of AERO 5415 Promoter and its interaction with minerals relevant to Majdanpek ore are also discussed."

Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

"Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

"More efficient drilling and blasting techniques have shown measurable improvements in throughput at the Barrick Goldstrike wet grinding mill.A decrease in throughput at the autoclave, due to increasingly hard ore, was identified in early 2002. A team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas participated closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative to ensure that it would address the needs of both groups, with the target of improving throughput in future years, despite the projected harder ores. Plant studies were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting could positively influence throughput. At the Goldstrike mill the greatest opportunity from the D2M initiative is realized on the hardest ore. Grinding throughput for softer ore, <15 kWh/st, can meet or exceed the downstream pressure oxidation requirements. Grinding throughput for harder ore, >15 kWh/st, is limited by the SAG milling capacity. Better fragmentation in the D2M ore, as demonstrated by image analysis, increased throughput 5% to 10% (25 to 50 stph) compared to the standard mining methods.Better fragmentation and a subsequent increase in mill throughput were achieved through the use of:1) Electronic caps for more precision and flexibility, as well as for allowing extremely fast shots.2) Explosives with a higher velocity of detonation (VOD), to provide for improved shock energy.3) Improved distribution of the explosives by decreasing pattern spacing.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Goldstrike Open-Pit group, along with the Process division, began experimenting with novel blasting technology and techniques to improve mill throughput in the spring of 2001. "Economies of scale and the variable characteristics of many large ore deposits have resulted in grinding installations using very large SAG mills fitted with variable speed drives. Low-aspectratio single-stage SAG mills were introduced in South Africa to process the consistent gold bearing Witwatersrand quartzites. Elsewhere, circuits were patterned after the more conventional North American circuits with high-aspect-ratio SAG mills followed by ball mills. This paper provides information on two recent Gold Fields group installations covering both types of SAG mill in large, single-stage applications. While these operations process similar tonnages, the mills represent opposite ends of the aspect-ratio spectrum. The Tarkwa mine in Ghana employs a low-aspect 27’ x 42’ 14MW SAG mill. The St Ives mine in Australia operates a conventional 36’ x 18’ 13.4MW SAG mill.INTRODUCTIONGold Fields is one of the world’s largest gold producers with annual production of approximately 4.2 million ounces. The Gold Fields group has operations in South Africa, Ghana and Australia, along with numerous exploration sites and advanced projects in several other countries. This paper discusses new milling operations in Ghana and Australia.TarkwaThe Tarkwa Gold Mine is located in Ghana, West Africa, approximately 350 kilometers west of the capital city of Accra (Figures 1 and 2). "In this study, hydraulic conductivity (K) geostatistics were used to predict residence time distribution of well-to-well flow. Flow profiles, fracture density measurements, and pumping tests were available from the highly fractured Florence Copper in situ leaching site. The flow profiles were used to establish the statistical distribution and spatial autocorrelation of K. Two tests were used for validation. The first test confirmed that fracture density and K are autocorrelated over similar length scales. In the second test, Monte Carlo flow simulations successfully recreated the results of pumping tests. Flow sim¬ulations were used to stochastically model well-to-well residence time distribution. RÉSUMÉ Dans cette étude, nous utilisons la géostatistique de la conductivité hydraulique (K) pour prévoir la distribution des temps de séjour (DTS) de l’écoulement entre les puits. Des profils de l’écoulement, des mesures de la densité des fractures et des essais de pompage existaient pour le site fortement fracturé de lixiviation in situ de Florence Copper. Les profils de l’écoulement ont permis d’établir la distribution statistique et l’autocorrélation spatiale de K. Deux essais ont servi à la validation ; le premier a confirmé que la densité des fractures et K sont autocorrélés sur des échelles de longueur similaires ; quant au second, des simulations d’écoulements de type Monte Carlo sont parvenues à reproduire les résultats des essais de pompage. Les simulations d’écoulement ont servi à établir un modèle stochastique de la DTS de l’écoulement entre les puits.INTRODUCTION In situ leaching is the circulation of a dilute acid or base solution in the subsurface, via a series of injection and recovery wells, to dissolve a target metal. In situ leach modelling requires forecasting the residence time distribution (RTD) of flow between wells. In fractured formations such as copper porphyry deposits, order-of-magnitude variations in hydraulic conductivity (K) can result in highly channeled flow, resulting in a heavy tailed RTD (Becker & Shapiro, 2003; Kang, Le Borgne, Dentz, Bour, & Juanes, 2015). Channeling through preferential pathways has impacted copper recovery at several past in situ leaching field tests (Cathles, Glenn, Lenzi, Nigrini, Deans, & Huff, 1978; Ahlness & Pojar, 1983; Schmidt, Earley, & Friedel, 1994; Sinclair & Thompson, 2015). The aim of this work is to combine multiple types of hydrogeological measurements to stochastically forecast the well-to-well RTD in fractured rock for the purposes of copper in situ leach modelling."

"It is a widely held view that in the 21st century, the mining industry will be dominated by a relatively small number of large companies, truly global in scope and internationally staffed (Gooding, 1997). Interestingly enough, most of the exploration and exploitation activities are being carried out by junior and major mining companies from common law jurisdictions in civil law countries, in particular in Latin America, where in recent years, the region has ranked first as a destination for exploration dollars, thanks to the reforms undertaken by some countries to amend their legal framework to attract foreign investment. From a lawyer’s point of view, this is where the main challenge lies: how to bridge the gap between the two legal systems.In order to avoid pitfalls, common law lawyers should be more diligent and proactive when dealing with civil law jurisdictions, given the different systems of law, standards, traditions and customs. Common law lawyers cannot be expected to be well-versed in civil law but they should not be completely unfamiliar with it either. A balance should be struck to ensure clients’ needs are professionally taken care of and that common law requirements and standards are met."
