"Experiments were performed with plant feeds with a continuous 1,8 m3 cell at Pyhasalmi mine with Cu flotation feed in order to test the applicability of the bubble surface area flux as an indicator of the flotation rate constant. It was found that bubble surface area flux could not predict the rate constants of coarse Cu containing fractions. In the middle size fraction, the correlation coefficient in the rate coefficient estimation was higher but not statistically significant. Only the fine fraction showed a linear relationship with a moderate correlation coefficient.The bubble surface area flux was shown not to be a function of the impeller velocity above a threshold value. The flux was an almost linear function of the superficial gas rate enabling to use the superficial gas rate instead of flux if the operation of an existing cell is to be estimated.INTRODUCTIONBubble area flux seems to offer a simple way of modeling flotation. It relates the flotation rate constant with the bubble surface area flux by a simple linear equation. Due to this, there has been a considerable interest in using the bubble area flux for flotation computations. "Location and Transportation FacilitiesTHE BEAVERLODGE area of North Saskatchewan is on the north side of lake Athabasca, 500 air miles northeast of Edmonton.The main Eldorado operation and townsite are on the north •side of Beaverlodge lake, which is immediately north of lake Athabasca and is separated from it by only a mile long portage at Lodge bay. The once famous town of Goldfields. Saskatchewan, and the Box property of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, are located on lake Athabasca nine mines from Beaverlodge townsite.Previously, all Eldorado freight was delivered by barge at the Lodge Bay portage, hauled across the portage, and across Beaverlodge lake by small Northern Transportation Company barges, which involved many handlings.In 1952 the port of 'Bushell' was established at Black bay. This is a particularly snug harbour, well protected from the main body of the lake and with good foundations for docking facilities. A Butler building, 300 ft. by 60 ft., and tank farms provide storage at the port. A •road from Bushell to the main Beaverlodge operation, a distance of twelve miles through rugged terrain, was built by the Saskatchewan Government. The cost was shared by the Saskatchewan Government, the Federal Government, and Eldorado and other mining companies.Along this road are located the properties of several enterprising mining companies and near the midpoint lies the ambitious budding town of Uranium. This road has made portaging unnecessary and palletized freight loaded at Waterways, Alta., is now loaded directly on trucks at Bushell and delivered to the point of consumption."

"After cooling and thickening, slurry from the second stage of the Hudbay zinc pressure leach circuit is filtered and washed on a belt filter prior to disposal. At times, the belt filter can be a bottleneck to the process. Preliminary studies show that filterability of the second-stage (HAL) autoclave leach residue can be indicated by particle size distribution of the filter feed and filtered residue cake. In particular, the Volume Weighted Mean Diameter, D[4,3], generated by a laser diffraction particle size analyzer from samples of HAL Filter feed, shows residues that filter more poorly have a lower Volume Weighted Mean Diameter than those that filter better. INTRODUCTIONHudbay produces cast zinc metal from blends of zinc concentrates at its metallurgical complex in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, using Sherritt’s two-stage pressure leach process (Collins et al., 1994; Collins et al., 1995; Barth et al., 1998; Shairp et al., 2006). Pressure leaching replaced the original roastleach- electrowinning process in 1993.Filtration for the second-stage (HAL) leach residue originally consisted of two stages of vacuum drum filtration with intermediate cake repulping stirred tanks. As part of Hudbay’s 777 Project, with a designed increase in cast zinc production, a pre-feasibility study by SNC-Lavalin Inc. showed that losses of soluble zinc in the zinc pressure leach residue could be reduced by installing more efficient filtering and washing equipment. Based on laboratory performance, capital cost, installation ability, and potential operating cost savings, a 70 m2 Filtres Phillipe belt filter was chosen for the HAL residue, and commissioned in 2000/2001.When the HAL belt filter is performing well, there is no pooling of water on the surface, moisture content is relatively low, and subsequent analysis shows that water soluble zinc content is relatively low. There have been occasions where the filter has performed poorly with respect to the aforementioned parameters. "Each and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Several factors including ore heterogeneity and harsh production environment affect the reproducibility of the reported data. Best practices of metal accounting thus prescribe that production reports be accompanied by measurement quality reports quantifying the reproducibility (a data quality metric often expressed as a relative standard deviation) of each data reported. Ignoring the irreproducibility of measurements may lead to the perception that random errors have been totally eliminated through statistical data reconciliation, which is wrong. This paper aims at explaining the full lifecycle management of reproducibility estimation from the outset at the measurement process to its reporting after having been through the statistical data reconciliation process. Indeed, the reproducibility of reported data can be obtained by performing a sensitivity analysis. Necessary conditions for obtaining a truly representative assessment of measurement reproducibility are stated. Typical levels of measurement reproducibility found in operating flotation plants are also reported. These numbers can be used as benchmarks for reproducibility levels that can be realistically expected.IntroductionEach and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Such production reports are the most expected output from a metal accounting system (MAS). The duly recurrence of this task combined with an insufficient level of automation has somehow contributed to the misleading perception that it is mainly a clerical work. Several reviews of mineral project performance in the past 35 years indicate a pattern of occasional, but recurrent, mining project failures due to shortcomings in geological information and estimation, mineral processing and metallurgical testing, feasibility study objectives and requirements, and project start-up methods. A commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement methods and to obtaining “ENOUGH DATA, OF APPROPRIATE QUALITY” is essential. Recent international and Canadian proposals for mineral resource and ore reserve definitions have taken a nonprescriptive stance that will undermine the formulation of requirements, guidelines and industry standards for efficient deposit delineation and estimation, and for the determination of project feasibility. To help reduce problems, every feasibility study supporting a mine development and production decision should be based on objectives and methods adequate to reach completion targets similar to the bankers’, as a good business target for a profitable project. In a resource/reserve system, the use of reserve should be restricted to a project that meets required technical, economic and legal feasibility requirements for successful project implementation, and the definitions of these categories should provide explicit limits. Current shortcomings will limit the ability of the Qualified Person to provide “adequate professional practice,” fulfill his/her professional responsibilities to his employer or client and provide adequate information to the investing public. We must take advantage of present opportunities for Setting New Standards for the new Millennium.

PRIOR to June, 1937, the employees of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., at Timmins, Ontario, received medical care for themselves under a contract system developed through an agreement between the employer, employee, and a contract physician. This form of practice is common to the mining industry in Ontario. But with the improvement in mining methods and conditions of living, and through an increasing demand for provision of a complete medical care, it was not any surprise when the employees of the Hollinger mine approached organized medicine and indicated their desire for a plan to provide their families with a more or less complete medical service in addition to that supplied for themselves. In April, 1937, this approach was made, and on June 18th, 1937, the Hollinger Employees' Medical Services Association was formed and started to provide medical services. A review of five years' experience is now presented. The Association provides complete medical service for the employee, his wife and family, as well as those dependents who are the total responsibility of the employee. The employee membership is limited to employees at the Hollinger mine in Timmins who reside in the immediate vicinity. The employee is examined by a Company doctor on application for employment and is subject to further examination by a specialise in chest diseases under the direction of the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. The wife and family are not subject to examination but have to be registered when the employee is accepted for employment. The dependents, other than the immediate family, are subject to medical examination and approval after the employee has applied for such dependent or dependents to be admitted. Membership in the Association is obligatory when the employee is hired, but at the end of any Association year he may drop out if he so wishes.

"Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10,000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in threes individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream x-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8%, zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.INTRODUCTIONSEcstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, one of the world's major base metal producers, near the old gold mining centre of Timmins, Ontario. Discovered in 1964, the property was brought into production in November, 1966. Originally designed for 9,000 tons per day, the operation now treats 10,000 tons per day of two different ore types mined from a single open pit. In the near future, open pit ore will be supplemented by ore from an underground operation now being readied for productionAt the Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. The whole plant is highly automated and control is coordinated from a central control room. The treatment process follows conventional practices although fine grinding is required for optimum flotation recoveries. Normally, two circuits treat copper-zinc ore at a combined rate of 6,500 tons per day while the third circuit treats 3,500 tons per day of silver-lead-zinc ore. Special production averages 2,400 tons per day."

"Due to the randomness of all factors influencing the sintering operation, a two-stepped procedure is proposed to find the best way of using stocked fines at a plant producing Fe-Mn alloys for the steelmaking industry. The approach is based on the following: (1) predict the result of the sintering operation by establishing the best multilinear regression model using some of the characteristics of the loaded material; and (2) find the best solution under a minimizing cost criteria by solving a linear optimization problem using the regression equation plus constraints on the feed and product. IntroductionSome tests carried out using 20% to 30% of sinter in the material loaded into a 60 000 KVA Tysland-Hole electric furnace producing Fe-Mn alloys for the steelmaking industry indicated: (1) a meaningful decrease in the off-gas temperature and, consequently, a better energy use due to the material higher porosity; (2) more uniform heat distribution as a consequence of the electrode reaction zone enlargement; (3) an improved furnace control resulting in a smoother operation; and (4) a decrease in gas production facilitating the off-gas treatment. For some years, this plant used only the coarse fraction of the Mn ores, thus stocking all the received and own-generated fine particles. In view of the mentioned results, a strategy for increasing the use of stocked fines was formulated, including a step where it was necessary to decide which components and respective quantities should be used in the blends to be sintered (Almeida, 1984).It is well known that several factors affect productivity and energy consumption in sinter production, also influencing the product quality. Raw materials characteristics, namely chemical and size composition, affect permeability to gases and may or may not allow a deeper bed. In general, finer ores decrease permeability, increasing electricity consumption by fans, but due to their higher specific surface area, react more completely with other components in the mixture. For coke granulometry, a compromise must be obtained in order not to burn it too quickly nor to widen the flame front, therefore decreasing productivity. Decreasing coke in the blend also acts in sinter bonding, decreasing its consistency and increasing crushing and return fines. Moisture addition also influences components mixing, pre-agglomeration, bed permeability and, consequently, sintering productivity. Therefore, optimum conditions must be established for both a given sintering plant and the components in the feed (Dawson, 1993)."

In this section of the province only the most meagre of surveys have been made and because these are not sufficient to determine with any degree of accuracy even the total forest area, the information presented in this paper is not complete. Area: -The area south of the Canadian National, and served by the Pacific Great Eastern, is roughly 38,000. square miles, 30,000 of which is classed as productive. This is approximately equal to the productive area of Norway, or half of Finland-or of 30 per cent of Sweden. It is larger than that of either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Eliminating from the productive area 3600 square miles of grass-land and areas capable of agricultural development, 26,000 square miles (16,600,000 acres) remains as absolute forest-land, as compared with the 55,000,000 acres of Sweden, the 37,500,000 acres of Finland, the 17,000,000 acres of Norway, and the 7,600,000 acres of Austria.

Abstract A discussion of the difficulties involved in the production of a clean molybdenite concentrate introduces the paper. There is a brief description of the various methods for producing molybdenite that will fit marketing specifications, and it is shown how these methods are nor suited to the milling of ores containing small quantities of bismuth and copper. A process that was developed in the ore testing laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Ottawa for the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada is described in derail and some results from pilot plant operation of this milling scheme are tabulated. A description of the La Corne mill, where the writer supervised the introduction of the process on a commercial scale, adds to the interest of the paper. In conclusion, there is a review of the conditions necessary for proper operation of the flowsheet. An attempt is made to show how the process might be satisfactory in other problems similar to that at the La Corne mill. Introduction The production of a molybdenite concentrate, free from impurities and high in grade, has been a difficult task when milling some types of ore. Whereas ordinary flotation techniques will produce acceptable concentrates of the baser sulphides, in many cases they will not serve in the treatment of molybdenite, for this mineral must be of optimum grade and purity to bring the best prices, or to find a market at all . Faced with the necessity of meeting stringent specifications, the mill operator has been forced to employ expensive processing methods, and to be satisfied with low recoveries, in order to make grade with his product. The most objectionable and common impurities found with molybdenite are: (a) gangue minerals and iron sulphides, which lower the grade; and (b) copper, bismuth, or antimony, which are deleterious in the final uses of the molybdenite products. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to market a concentrate with over 0.5 per cent of any of the latter impurities, or with a grade much below 90 per cent MoS2. Various methods, which have been highly successful in specific applications, have been developed to meet the problem of producing a suitable concentrate. All of them, however, have certain defects precluding their use when treating ores of a nature different from the one for which they ? were designed. The writer has developed a process for molybdenite ores having an objectionable impurity content. A description of the procedure involved, and of the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada, where the process has been adopted, should be of interest to flotation operators.

"The Geological Survey of Canada is devoting consider-able effort to finding ways to make airborne radiometric measurements both quantitative and reproducible. Equipment has been designed by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. to provide high count rates in order to minimize statistical uncertainty, this being essential to justify applying terrain clearance and Compton scattering corrections to the data. Correction factors have been determined experimentally and can be applied automatically. Considerable ground work has been undertaken in parallel with equip-ment development in order to determine field parameters.Two airborne gamma-ray spectrometers are described. One is based on three 5-by 5-inch Nal(Tl) detector crystals and is used in a helicopter; the other employs twelve 9-by 9-inch detectors and is used from a Skyvan aircraft. The former is being used to investigate the range of radiometric response from specific rock types, and for the correlation of ground and air measurements; the latter has completed initial trials and will be commencing experimental surveys during 1969.Results are given to show the comparative sensitivities of the various detector sizes, and operational requirements for a gamma-ray spectrometer survey are discussed briefly."

"Newmont’s Mike prospect, currently undeveloped, is a blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit on the Carlin Trend, containing >8.5 M oz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn as Carlin-type gold and polymetallic Cu-Zn minerals in Paleozoic lower-plate carbonates and shales. This project was undertaken 1) to examine the effectiveness of different lixiviants for leaching the Mike supergene Cu-Au ores via bottle roll tests, and 2) to determine what ore minerals resist dissolution in each leaching agent by comparing the mineralogy and chemistry of head and tail samples. Sulfuric and sulfurous acids were used to leach copper and cyanide was used to leach gold. Thiourea, glycine, and other lixiviants were used to leach both base metals and precious metal. QEMSCAN and SEM study of six samples of different ore types and grades indicate that the Au occurs as varieties of native gold, including auricupride and electrum. Major Cu minerals are native Cu, cuprite, malachite, chrysocolla, and conichalcite (Ca-Cu arsenate), with locally significant Cu in jarosite and goethite. Gangue mineralogy is dominated by quartz, sericite, chlorite, alunite, smectite and kaolinite, K-feldspar, and iron oxides (sensu lato). Results of bottle roll tests and leach residue mineralogy will be presented and discussed at the conference.INTRODUCTION Resource and Geologic Setting The Mike deposit is a large, blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit in the Maggie Creek district of the Carlin Trend of Nevada, USA, near the Gold Quarry mine (Figure 1). The mineral inventory, based on drilling, is 8.568 Moz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn at average grades of 0.72 g/t Au, 0.34 wt% Cu, and 2.13 wt% Zn (inventory for a cone at $400/oz Au and $0.80/lb Cu by Norby and Orobona, 2002)."

"LocationThe Ekati Diamond mine is located at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories.Brief Description of OperationBHP Diamonds Inc. has developed Canada's first diamond mine in the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada. BHP Diamonds Inc. is part of the BHP World Minerals Division ofBHP Minerals. The project is a joint venture between manager and operator BHP (51%) and the Blackwater Group (49%). The Blackwater Group comprises Dia Met Minerals Limited, Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson.Production at the NWT diamonds project began in October with the mine officially opened October 14, 1998. The project is situated on an 853 000 acre claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT. It is about 300 km northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to the Echo Bay Lupin mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.HistoryIn 1980, Charles Fipke traced indicator minerals east from the Mackenzie River area. He discovered indicator minerals in the Lac de Gras area and staked mineral claims in 1989. A joint venture was formed between BHP and Dia Met in 1990, and in 1991, the first diamonds in the NWT were discovered at Point Lake by BHP and Dia Met. This initiated the largest staking rush in Canadian history. The joint venture launched an aggressive exploration program.Koala, Fox, and Leslie were identified in 1992 as potentially economic pipes.As soon as the project's potential was established, it was recognized that an enormous amount of work had to be completed in several areas before a mine could be developed, namely: technical evaluation of the resources; environmental and socio-economic evaluation to procure the necessary permits for the development; and engineering design to optimize mining and processing of the resource and to comply with specific environmental requirements."

Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. COAL of sub-bituminous rank underlies much of the plains area of Alberta. This coal is geo-logically young, and occurs in Belly River and Edmonton strata of Up-per Cretaceous age. Generally, the seams are flat-lying, but in some areas they may dip as much as 5 degrees. The overburden, composed mainly of glacial clays and sand-stones, may vary in depth from a few feet to several thousand feet. Recovery of the coal has 'been by drift, slope, and shaft underground mines, and by open-pit stripping operations. Production has been obtained from a large number of mines, most of which have been relatively small and with preparation equipment limited to a loading tipple with screening facilities, and a picking belt where high-ash materials can be removed from the larger sizes. The coal has been sold for domestic and industrial space-heating, for production of process steam, and for power generation. In re-cent years competition from natural gas, propane, and oil has seriously interfered with the production and marketing of sub-bituminous coal, especially with the disposal of the smaller sizes at a realistic price.

Introductory During the past few years, salt (sodium chloride) strata have been encountered in western Canada in a number of wells, while prospecting for oil and gas. The ever increasing number of such wells points to the presence of a vast salt basin, the boundaries of which are at present unknown. This basin extends in a northwesterly direction from a point near the United States boundary south of Regina, crosses the Saskatchewan- Alberta boundary northwest of Unity, Sask., and continues with more northerly trend to Waterways and beyond. The beds, as encountered, appear to have a general dip to the southwest of between 10 to 20 feet to the mile and a pitch along the strike to the southeast. Thus one finds the salt strata at Waterways, Alta., at 600 feet below the surface (121 feet above sea level) whereas at Radville, Sask. south of Regina, the top of the salt is at a depth of 6,643 feet below the surface (4,430 feet below sea level). Whether this is a continuous salt basin or a series of separate basins is not yet known. We do know however, that in some of the well~ more than one salt horizon occurs while in others which normally should have encountered corresponding beds, the salt strata are absent. This latter condition, however, may occur only in the southern part of Saskatchewan, where a barren area seems to come in from the southwest. In the northwestern part of the basin, on the other hand, the occurrence of the salt strata seems to be more regular and continuous, and depths at which salt should be encountered in a drill hole in this part of the basin may be predicted with a fair degree of accuracy.

Copper feed materials processing is becoming more challenging, due to an incremental increase in the mineralogical and compositional complexity of these feeds. These complex and polymetallic feeds are now becoming more common and many sites have been forced to re-evaluate their operating strategies to process these materials at cost competitive rates, whilst meeting ever more stringent environmental regulations. Most operations must first evaluate the merits of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical treatment routes. Although there are multiple copper smelting technologies available, only top-submerged lance (TSL) technology, supplied by Glencore Technology as ISASMELT™, has been applied in the real world to consistently and successfully smelt complex materials in integrated metallurgical facilities such as Glencore’s Kazzinc Ltd. operation in Kazakhstan, Umicore Precious Metals Refining in Belgium and Aurubis AG in Germany. Glencore Technology also offers hydrometallurgical processing, through the Albion Process™ technology, opening up viable flowsheet options previously not possible for these complex feeds. This paper describes a number of real world process flowsheets at global operations and Glencore’s own operations at Mount Isa and Kazzinc Ltd., which process complex feeds. These flowsheets integrate the ISASMELT™, Albion Process™, ISACONVERT™, ISAKIDD™ Tank house, and bottom blown oxygen cupel (BBOC™) technologies to provide an effective process solution for the treatment of complex polymetallic feeds to produce metallic copper and associated by-products. INTRODUCTION Traditional smelters and those built in recent times within the bulk smelting hubs of the world have been designed to treat standard/clean concentrates. In recent years the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide concentrates and the recycling of secondary copper and derivatives of waste electrical and electronic equipment, such as e-scrap, have become a focus for numerous companies (Alvear & Nikolic, 2013). Processing of these complex feeds, characterized by relatively high levels of minor elements (over 5% of elements such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, lead and zinc) is more challenging. Facilities not designed for these types of materials may require significant modifications or a change in smelting technology to treat them. "Abstract-Exploration in most areas of Canada has to contend with problems posed by glacial overburden. In many areas exploration for gold has been based on the sampling of tills, frequently by deep overburden drilling, and analyses of heavy mineral concentrates. Notwithstanding the significant role that till geochemistry has played in the discovery of some important gold deposits over the last few years, increased appreciation of the nature of the glacial history and stratigraphy and the character of gold within till has led to the recognition of a number of ways whereby the effectiveness of exploration can be improved upon.In order for till geochemistry to be useful in exploration, a number of conditions must be fulfilled, including:1. mineralization, or alteration halo related to mineralization, subcropping at the bedrock /over­ burden interface; 2.glacial erosion and dispersal of a recognizable signature of mineralization into the glacialsediments; 3, preservation of glacial sediments containing this geochemical component (trace metal or mineral) at positions subsequently selected for sampling (normally drill sites); 4. correct identification of specific till units and associated ice movement history; 5. collection of adequately large and representative samples; 6. appropriate sample preparation and processing; 7, appropriate geochemical analyses; and 8. correct data processing and interpretation.While we have no control over the first two geological conditions, and only limited controlover till availability, we can control the quality and thoroughness of sampling, sample identification, sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. In particular attention needs to be focussed on obtaining a large enough sample to be adequately representative, an unbiased sample must be collected, together with appropriate sample processing, analysis, data processing and interpretation. It is considered that by modifying or extending existing approaches to gold exploration the chances of exploration success can be increased. In particular, analyses of both the heavy mineral and minus 63 ?m fractions of till is recommended because gold in till may occur in different size fractions."

"Along the process of defining the fundamentals of a ferronickel project, several questions require proper answers from the very beginning such as the size and characteristics of the laterite deposit (oxide or silicate), the mineralogical variability, and the selection of the most valuable process route. In general, these elements will be defined along the progress of the exploration and feasibility studies, and definitive engineering. Also, from the very preliminary estimates, three questions are very common: what should be the plant capacity (annual tonnes of contained nickel), what will be the probable capital required (CAPEX), and what will be the estimated timeline (schedule) between the initial stage, say the feasibility study and the plant start-up and ramp-up to designed capacity. The accuracy of the capital cost estimates also progresses along the different stages of development from ±50% at the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) stage down to ±5% for the Detailed Engineering and Construction stage. These accuracies of estimates have been, in some ways, accepted by the mining community and investors. The industry accepted benchmark for ferronickel projects in terms of CAPEX are then in the order of US$50,000 per tonne of nickel contained in the FeNi product. In this paper, the authors analyze in some details three ferronickel projects for lateritic ores that have selected the Rotary Kiln - Electric Furnace (RKEF) as the suitable technological route and have started production in the period 2006–2016. Some key aspects of the ferronickel projects are examined: 1) size and type of deposit; 2) flowsheet selection; 3) evolution of capital cost as a function of capacity from the feasibility stage to construction; 4) comparison between planned production scale and actual ramp up; 5) estimated capital expenditure (CAPEX) compared with actual figures; 6) nickel price evolution and timing of the approval for the project to proceed to construction and production start-up. The objective of this paper is to identify key elements that should be addressed in future projects and that are proposed as benchmark figures for similar projects."
