Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. "THE TOWN OF Salmo, rail centre for the Salmo lead-zinc mining district, is in southeastern British Columbia 26 miles by road east of Trail an about the same distance south of Nelson. The belt in which the mines occur is a few miles east of Salmo and extends about 6 miles north of the town and 17 miles south and southwest to the International Boundary. The belt includes the H. B. mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, the Jersey mine of Canadian Exploration Limited, the Reeves MacDonald mine, and the Jack Pot property of New Jersey Zinc Explorations Limited.Since 1949, the Jersey and Reeves MacDonald mines have produced most of the lead and zinc in the district. From 1949 through 1954 these two mines together produced a total of 233,134 ounces of silver, 87,659,399 pounds of lead, 215,708,856 pounds of zinc and 475,397 pounds of cadmium. This amounts to more than 80 per cent of the total production of lead and 95 per cent of the total production of zinc from the district since the first recorded production in 1906. Reserves at the largest properties amount to several million tons of ore containing 4 to 7 per cent combined lead and zinc. Several prospects are potential producers.Regional StructureThe main structural units in the Salmo area are outlined in Figure I, and the major rock units of the stratigraphic column are listed in the following table. The lead and zinc deposits are replacements in a highly deformed limestone formation near the base of the Laib group, and all mineralized zones are on the south and east side of structural unit 2 (see Figure I)."

Iron ore, when subjected to reducing gases at a temperature suitable for reduction of the oxide but not high enough to melt the ore or metal formed, is converted into metallic iron. The product, being the original piece of iron oxide minus its oxygen, is sponge-like in appearance when viewed under a magnifying glass, and hence is called 'sponge iron. Sponge iron was probably the form in which some of the first iron was recovered from the ores. As early as the eighth century the Catlan forge developed into a low shaft furnace known as the high bloomary, in which iron was produced in the form of a pasty mass. These furnaces were increased in height, and with increased temperatures came the production of liquid cast-iron, at first undesirable because of lack of knowledge of methods for working it. In 1340 the first true blast-furnace was built iri Belgium. Some castings were made, but the greater part of the iron was converted into wroughtiron blooms by a crude puddling process. Charcoal was the universal fuel until the latter part of the seventeenth century, when coke was first used in England. Larger scale developments of methods of refining pig-iron followed. In I 885 Bessemer built his first converter in England, and within a few years the Siemen' s regenerative open-hearth furnace was developed, also in England, to produce steel. Then followed the enormous expansion in the metallurgy of iron. The idea of a direct process for the production of iron and steel has persisted during all of this time.

In these days of arrested prosperity, when patience is tried and the future but dimly outlined, Canada's gold mining industry stands out as a beacon light shedding its rays of hope and confidence and demonstrating that there is still one product unaffected by Customs barriers and eagerly sought by all the people of the world. Some other forms of industry have hesitated and side-stepped. Some have cried for help, and in spite of public assistance, generously extended, they are still unable to demonstrate definitely their ability to resume the onward march. But gold mining has never hesitated. As an industry, it has bad an unique experience. When prices are high and conditions are generally referred to as prosperous, this industry is adversely affected. The cost of production goes up; profits are diminished; public sympathy is lacking; and, thrown upon its own resources, the industry tightens up its belt and throws its whole energy into an effort to improve operating conditions, and offset high prices by increased efficiency. When, in due course, depression follows inflation and prices ebb, the gold miner, through necessity, finds himself physically and mentally prepared to meet the situation.

The probability of making an exploration discovery in Canada can be calculated from Derry's (1970) data on exploration expenditures and number of discoveries over the last nineteen years. Considering an average exploration "try" to be $30,000, the probability of a discovery with one try has decreased tenfold from about 0.01 in 1951 to 0.001 in 1969. A plot of these probabilities can be extrapolated to the future, giving a 1969-71 three-year average probability of 0.00096 with 90 per cent confidence limits of 0.00042 and 0.00153. Using this probability, various calculations can be made, such as (1) the probability of making at least one discovery for any given exploration expenditure, (2) the probability of ultimate ruin or survival of the exploration investment process and (3) the expected value of an exploration investment. There is a critical minimum amount per discovery that must be re-invested in exploration, no matter how large the original investment is, for exploration to survive at all in the long run. Currently, this critical minimum is $31,200,000 with 90 per cent confidence limits of $19,600,000 and $71,400,000.

"Chalcopyrite, a major source of copper, is commonly found associated with iron sulfides, particularly pyrite. The separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite by flotation is difficult due to the galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite during grinding and flotation. Galvanic interactions may cause oxidation and dissolution of chalcopyrite, copper activation of pyrite and the formation of hydrophilic iron hydroxide coating. The overall effect may change the floatability of the components and lead to the misplacement of pyrite into chalcopyrite concentrate. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lignosulfonate-based biopolymers on the depression of pyrite in the flotation of chalcopyrite with xanthate as collector and the mechanism responsible for the selective depression of pyrite. The flotation results showed that biopolymers depressed the flotation of both copper-activated pyrite and chalcopyrite in single mineral flotation although to different extents. In the flotation of mixed mineral systems, biopolymers significantly depressed pyrite flotation but had a less influence on chalcopyrite flotation. The selective depression of pyrite by biopolymers was due to the preferential adsorption of biopolymers on copper-activated pyrite surface. Galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite surfaces promoted copper activation on pyrite. Presence of cuprous ions on pyrite surface favored biopolymer adsorption by the formation of a complex between the cuprous ions and biopolymer molecules. The same galvanic interactions also facilitated chalcopyrite oxidation leading to the formation of hydrophobic polysulfide that enhanced the hydrophobicity on chalcopyrite surface. The biopolymer structure controlled the depression effect. The results showed that the biodegradable biopolymers are promising depressants for pyrite.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulfide minerals, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), are the major mineral source for copper. They are often found finely interlocked with iron sulfides, especially pyrite (FeS2) (Owusu, Brito e Abreu, Skinner, Addai-Mensah, & Zanin, 2014). Pyrite, as the most abundant sulfide mineral, is perceived as gangue in most cases and should be removed from the associated sulfides to minimize its contamination of the copper concentrate (Owusu, Addai-Mensah, Fornasiero, & Zanin, 2013; Wang & Forssberg, 1991). The commonly used strategy to remove pyrite is flotation (Wang & Forssberg, 1991)."

Data are presented on the global warming issue to reinforce the decision by the U.S to reject the Kyoto protocol. The evidence that CO2 is a problem rather than a benefit is inconclusive and will be discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, for economic reasons alone, the US steel industry will continue to minimize CO2 emissions (and the release of real pollutants) per ton of steel through energy reduction programs. However, relative to inevitable increases in absolute CO2 emissions from the utility industry and the transportation sector, future reductions by the steel industry will be inconsequential in the "big picture."

Craigmont Mines Limited mine 50,000 tons of ore and waste per day from the open pit at Merritt, British Columbia. An electric-powered "down-the-hole" drill, a diesel-powered rotary drill and two electric-powered rotary drills have been used. All primary drilling, as a result of cost and operating experience, is now performed with two electric-powered rotary drills. Trials with various loading techniques have increased the amount of AN-FO and decreased the amount of commercially prepared slurries used for primary blasting. Approximately 95 per cent of the primary blasting is accomplished with AN -FO, mixed at the hole. Introduction THE Craigmont mine is located near the village of Merritt, B.C., 240 miles northeast of Vancouver. The concentrator has been in production since September of 1961. Craigmont is a combined open-pit and underground operation. To date, slightly more than 95 per cent of the mill feed has been mined from the open pit. As underground development proceeds, the ore requirements from the open pit will decrease. The average milling rate from September, 1961, to April, 1964, was approximately 4,900 tons per day.

Four kinds of coal-rock combination were subjected to three kinds of stress waves in the SHPB numerical simulation. The wave propagation and the changes of the strain energy in the coal-rock combination during the dynamic impact process were recorded as well as the contact force. The dynamic response law of coal-rock combination was obtained. It was found that the coal had better reflectivity than the rock because of coal with larger impedance. In contrast the rock had better transmissivity. As the crest value of the incident wave increased, the increment in the crest value of the transmitted wave weakened in the coal-coal group, coal-rock group and rock-coal group, in contrast, the increment in the rock-rock group increased.

In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

"Recycling polymer based end-of-life materials as carbon resources for a partial replacement of coke/coal can make important contributions towards enhancing the environmental sustainability of steelmaking processes. An in-depth high temperature (1550°C) investigation has been carried on waste CDs/DVDs focussed specifically on char generation, characterization and dissolution into molten iron. The simultaneous presence of carbon and oxygen in polymeric chains on polycarbonate substrates resulted in the generation of a significant pore structure and exposed surfaces. Carbon dissolution studies into molten iron were carried out on the raw polymer as well on chars; high levels of carbon pick-up were observed in both cases after 15 minutes of contact at high temperatures. INTRODUCTIONOver the past sixty years, plastics have played an important part of our daily lives and are being increasingly used in all aspects of the global economy. More than 260 million tons of plastics are produced annually worldwide. Their rapid growth and extensive utilization with a short life span (such as packaging) has created a massive waste problem. Although the waste plastic component in municipal solid waste (MSW) amounts to only about 10 %, plastics have a high volume-to-weight ratio and these are generally not biodegradable. In Australia, ~19.20 % of plastics were recycled in 2009-2010 (PACIA, 2010); with the total consumption being estimated at 1,501,258 tonnes, 288,194 tonnes of plastics were recycled. There are serious environmental concerns with the two key waste management options, i.e. land filling and incineration, and there exists an urgent need for developing alternative recycling approaches. In this paper, we focus our attention on recycling waste CDs/DVDs polycarbonate substrates as a carbon resource in steelmaking.CDs/DVDs used for music/data/image are made from aromatic polycarbonate resin (hereafter abbreviated PC). This resin is also widely used as an engineering plastic in applications such as automobiles, mobile phones, notebook type personal computers, cameras & video cameras, electric & electronic appliances, fire equipment, life & living goods, roofing sheets, etc. High consumption and growth (~10% annually) of PC utilization is attributed to its excellent properties such as outstanding impact resistance, transparency, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. "Corrosion rates of silicon brasses, highzinc yellow brass, low-zinc yellow brass, leadedtin bronze and silicon bronzes in both permanent-mold and sand-cast conditions were determined in soft water of pH 3, 5 and 8, and hard water of pH 8 at 70°C by electrochemical polarization technique. The alloys in permanent- mold condition showed greater corrosion resistance than sand-cast condition. Corrosion rates obtained from weight loss measurements showed no observable trend of a difference between permanent-mold and sand-cast alloys.The corrosion rates decreased with increasing pH of the medium. Silicon bronze and silicon brass showed high corrosion resistance while leaded-tin bronze showed the least resistance. Addition of small amounts of aluminum improved the corrosion resistance of silicon bronzes and silicon brasses. Alloys in permanent- mold condition showed greater resistance to dezincification than sand-cast alloys when average pit depth parameter is considered."

"What are the basic physical parameters and main geometric parameters that are capable of representing the microscopic characteristics of rock? How can these parameters be used to accurately describe the macroscopic mechanical behavior of rock? With such questions in view, and based on the microcosmic structure analysis of rock slices, this paper presents a rock skeleton-pore structure model, holding that rock's mechanical behavior depends on the properties of rock skeleton materials and the form, size and distribution pattern of pores. According to rock stress and deformation behaviors, and in line with the skeleton-pore structure model, an essential mechanics theory for rock is advanced. The assumption that the skeleton materials are incompressible in volume and an introduction of logarithmic strain, generate the relation between porosity and apparent strain. Then, the notion that positive damage and negative damage are represented in terms of porosity is put forward; threshold value of porosity is derived by the damage threshold value of apparent volume strain; a general damage variable of rock is obtained; eventually, with the skeleton-pore model as the groundwork, a global damage constitutive equation is developed, which, with definite physical significance and material parameters to be easily determined, is convenient to apply. It has been proved that the results calculated with this new equation are well in agreement with experimental results.INTRODUCTIONRock is a form of material that contains pores, cracks and skeletons. Skeletons are composed of particles and cements. Pores or cracks within rock actually undermine the assumption of material continuum in solid mechanics. Hence, grave errors — or even false results — are inevitable if some solid mechanics theory is quoted in the discussion of rock mechanics. Many researchers in the field of rock mechanics have attempted various remedies, but the outcome is far from satisfactory — a mechanics theory for rock, in its true sense, has not been established."

"The energy required to plate pure zinc can be the most significant operating cost for an operator in the production of electrolytic zinc. This paper reports on developments on low energy Outotec coated titanium anode process technology with fully amorphous coatings, MSA®, and its application to brownfield zinc electrowinning operations around the world. This technology aims to reduce the operating cost and increase productivity for zinc producers.INTRODUCTIONZinc electrowinning is an energy-intensive process using more than 3,000 kWh/t of electric energy [1-4], and the reduction of the energy consumption is one of the key issues. The high energy consumption is due to a high cell voltage during electrolysis, which is mainly caused by a high overpotential of oxygen evolution reaction on lead alloy anodes which have been widely used in commercial zinc electrowinning processes. The overpotential of oxygen evolution is 0.6 V or more and which is approximately 4 times higher on average than that of the cathodic reaction (zinc deposition) [3,4]. Therefore, the reduction of oxygen overpotential is significant to reduce the electric energy consumption, and this will become more significant with increasing demand in metal production and rising energy costs.Oxide coated titanium anodes have been widely investigated for the oxygen evolution anodes in order to replace the lead alloy anodes [5-9], because it is known that the oxygen overpotential strongly depends on the material and structure of the anode. The most typical example of such anodes is an IrO2-Ta2O5 coated titanium anode, which is usually prepared at thermal decomposition of a precursor solution containing metal salts at 450 oC or more and obtained mixed oxide coating consists of crystalline IrO2 and amorphous Ta2O5. On the other hand, one of the authors of this paper, Professor Morimitsu, Doshisha University in Japan, has developed a novel oxide coated titanium anode, MSA® [10-25]. The most specialized point of MSA® is that the catalytic coatings are prepared at low thermal decomposition temperature and amorphous IrO2 or RuO2 is contained as the components in the coatings. Such amorphous coatings have high catalytic activity for oxygen evolution compared to lead alloy or crystalline coatings. Outotec acquired the international specialized MSA® patent licensing rights from Doshisha University and has produced and commercialized the amorphous oxide coated titanium anodes. These anodes have already been utilized mainly in copper electrowinning plants worldwide and have demonstrated a significant voltage reduction, a cost-efficiency, and a long lifetime. This novel technology is also effective to zinc electrowinning process, thus this paper presents the characterization and performance of amorphous IrO2-Ta2O5 coated titanium anodes and amorphous RuO2-Ta2O5 coated titanium anodes for oxygen evolution in zinc electrowinning."

ABSTRACT Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Because the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The “lime boil” process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95–98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

In this research, we devised a measurement method using total stations (TSs) which have ?the Baum? which is a concentric circle reticle, as substitute for crosshairs. The Baum owes its name to the similarity between the concentric circles and trees (Baum in German). By setting one circle on both of edges of cylinders, operators can set their sights on points on the center line of the cylinders, and also can measure positional coordinates of the points. Also, by measuring two different points on the center line, operators can measure the position and tilt of the axes of the cylinders. Furthermore, we developed a pile driving navigation system. Foundation piles are used for various structures, and their forms are generally cylindrical. Especially, although it is difficult to drive tilted pile foundations, their usage are expected to expand due to their high earthquake resistance. Yet, a method to accurately measure the tilts of piles has not been established. However, we proved that operators can obtain adequate accuracy to control foundation piles through the measurement experiment using this system. Using this system, the information of the pile is measured using a TS, transferred to a PDA, and displayed from the operator?s view of the piling machine.

The objective of this paper is to present, from a practical perspective, a review of the most relevant maintenance procedures that are accepted or prescribed to be the most effective in optimising service life potential and to ensure continued safe use of steel wire ropes for shaft mining applications. The paper will address the most common operational issues encountered in the care and operation of shaft ropes for both conventional drum hoists and multi-rope friction winders. For each distinct maintenance procedure presented, a limited amount of theory is discussed to identify the underlying mechanisms at play that must be addressed and to emphasize the logical basis for the recommended course of action. It is recognised that each installation is unique and that the recommended maintenance procedures may not always be practical or cost effective from an operations standpoint under select circumstances, however the intent remains to promote industry best practices for the knowledge and benefit of the mine hoisting community, from experienced maintenance personnel to new entrants to the industry alike.

The LCL&L process (Low Caustic Leaching & Liming) is a patented hydrometallurgical route developed by Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) to economically process spent pot lining (SPL) generated by aluminum cells. The three resulting end-products (carbonaceous, fluorinated and caustic liquor) are inert and have valorization possibilities. An industrial size pilot plant located in Saguenay (Quebec) was inaugurated in mid-2008 to demonstrate and optimize the technology. This paper describes characteristics of the LCL&L process and the experience acquired by RTA since the plant's start-up, including ramp-up capacity and technology challenges that were overcome. Possible end-products valorization methods are also presented. The carbonaceous end-product can be separated into carbon and brick rich fractions and used as either alternative fuel, reducing agents, or as raw material for third party processes. The development of a conversion process for the fluorinated end-product would allow its reuse as a substitute to fluorspar mineral for aluminum fluoride production. Finally concentrated caustic liquor is already valorized at the nearby RTA Vaudreuil alumina refinery.

SHERRITT GORDON Mines Limited annually produce 300,-000 pounds of pure cobalt by processing a nickel-cobalt-copper-iron sulphide ore which is mined at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The ore (containing 0.04 per cent Co) is •concentrated to give a concentrate containing l 1-12 per cent nickel, about 2.0 per cent .copper, and 0.25-0.35 per cent cobalt, which is treated at the Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The concentrate is leached in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulphate using compressed air as the oxidant. After filtration the leach solution contains, besides nickel and cobalt, copper ammines, sulpharnates and salts of various thionic acids. The copper is removed by precipitation as sulphide and the sulphur compounds converted to ammonium sulphate by a combined oxidation and hydrolysis treatment. The purified solution •Containing about 45 gpl of nickel and 1 gpl of cobalt is treated with gaseous hydrogen under pressure at 350°F to precipitate metallic nickel powder, the precipitation 'being terminated when the nickel content of the solution is about 0.8-1 gpl. "RÉSUMÉOn discute les principales sources de dilution au cours d’une exploitation souterraine. Les différentes définitions de la dilution en usage sont analysées. Une nouvelle méthodologie de calcul simplifiée et facile à utiliser dans la pratique minière est présentée. Cette méthodologie permet de remplacer les différentes expressions analytiques en usage par les deux facteurs de dilution seulement : un «facteur de dilution planifiée» lié à la sélectivité d’abattage au niveau de la planification minière et un «facteur de dilution additionnelle » permettant de juger de l’efficacité du contrôle de terrain et de la dilution pendant l’exploitation souterraine. L’application de cette méthodologie donnerait un outil nécessaire aux niveaux de la planification, du suivi des travaux d’exploitation et d’éventuelles études comparatives des coûts entre les différentes situations minières.ABSTRACTThe principal sources of dilution during underground evaluation and mining are discussed, then definitions of ore dilution currently in use are analyzed. These definitions vary depending on the authors. A new ore dilution evaluation methodology is proposed, replacing the ten different analytical expressions by only two: the planned dilution factor related to the stoping selectivity, done at the mine planning level, and the additional dilution factor related to the efficiency of the dilution control measures during stoping operations. The conclusion shows that the use of this methodology would be a definitive asset in planning, in stoping operations follow-up, and in future costs comparison studies between mining operations."
