An applicable Eluex process was developed for acid in-situ leaching (ISL) uranium mine in Bayanwula. In this process, uranium was adsorbed with strong base anion resin from the pregnant solution, then the loaded resin was eluted by sulfuric acid. After D2EHPA extraction, the concentrated eluate was enriched, and the loaded organic phase was stripped by sodium carbonate. The yellow cake was obtained by sodium hydroxide precipitation at last. The uranium concentration in the loaded strip solution was 52.8 g/L. Parameters of the process were determined, and the impact of the Eluex process in underground leaching was also investigated. In industrial design, 95% of raffinate went back to elution and 5% back to in-situ leaching. No significant effect on uranium leaching or resin adsorption was found.

In a COREM-McGill collaborative research and development project, gas dispersion parameters and froth properties were manipulated in a copper flotation plant to study interactions between the collection and the cleaning zones. In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in several different types of flotation cells is reported. Froth stability, measured by image analysis, was related to the following process conditions for specific flotation machines in an industrial case study: Gas flow rate, collector dosage, pH, frother type and dosage. Across the range examined, froth stability was improved through an increase in gas flow rate and/or frother dosage. Metallurgical results (grade and recovery) showed that both gold and copper were dependent on froth stability. Results indicated that flotation conditions could be optimized by monitoring froth stability.

THE estimation of the average value of gold ore involves many considerations, among them the correct sampling of the deposit, the dilution by waste, and the loss of high-grade fines. It is a common experience that, after all these factors have been evaluated, adjustment of the assays is necessary before satisfactory agreement between the calculated mine grade and the mill heads is obtained. In fact, at many mines the latter correction overshadows all others in the preparation of routine estimates. For this reason it is proposed to deal only with the mathematical treatment of mine assays and the problem of bringing estimates into conformity with the corrected mill heads. Mine assays differ from physical measurements because the range of values is very great and these are not symmetrically distributed above and below the average, there being fewer high than low results. There is no widely accepted mathematical procedure for determining the average of series of measurements which exhibit these characteristics. Customary practice consists in empirically reducing high assays until a satisfactory agreement with mill heads is reached. It was thought that more confidence could be placed in grade estimates if a logical basis for calculations could be devised .. In an attempt to find a fundamentally sound procedure, amenable to practical application, many series of assays comprising over 235,000 channel samples (1) were studied at Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited. Such an investigation could only be made where records covering many years of operation are available and where tabulating and calculating machines are in use. The results are recorded in the hope that the relationships noted for the large groups of assays used are of fundamental character and that the data will be useful to others dealing with the problem of grade estimation.

"Arsenic contained in minerals sulphides such as enargite and tennantite can represent not only a significant penalty element in base metals production, but also a disadvantage to the environment through producing the toxic emissions to the atmosphere. The achieving separation of arsenic bearing minerals either at an early stage in floatation or from the floatation concentration is significantly beneficial to the economic. However, there was no feasible commercial method of separation at the flotation stage because of its similar flotation properties with many other copper sulphides. In this work, the selective floatation of enargite from copper sulphide concentrate containing maily covllite, chalcoctie, bornite and enargite was investigated. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.2%, Cu 22% and a high arsenic bulk concentrate with As 7.65%,Cu 33.65% were obtained. It was indicated that Ca(ClO)2 is the effective depressor and the optimum floatation condition was obtained. Most enargite could be floated at pH 11 and controlling the pulp potential at 290 mV SHE. Furthermore, the arsenic removal from the high arsenic bulk concentrate by hydrometallurgy methods was study. The results showed that the reaction temperature and the concentrations of NaOH were the most important variables affecting the rate of arsenic removal. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.24%, Cu 37.80% was obtained in the optimum leaching condition.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is mainly produced as a by-product of base metals smelting, in particular copper concentrate. China has imposed an upper limit of 0.50% arsenic for concentrates entering (Long et al., 2012). Arsenic amount of copper concentrate within 0.40% has also been imposed in China, and above which will be introduced about 50 RMB penalties per ton for each 0.10% increasing by smelters now. Therefore, it is necessary to remove arsenic from the copper concentrate.In copper concentrate, arsenic is mainly in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4) or tennantite (Cu12As4S13). There are two types of arsenic in the separation of copper and arsenic: arsenopyrite and arsenic bearing copper mineral. It is easier to separate arsenopyrite from the copper sulphide by flotation in comparsion with the separation of enargite or tennantite from non-arsenic copper minerals (Pineda et al., 2015). The main difficulty in the separation of arsenic copper mineral from non-arsenic copper sulphides is their extremely similar floatability, which depends on the fact that tennantite and enargite contain high copper content (Pineda et al., 2015)."

"The Britannia ore deposits are approximately 20 miles north of Vancouver; and occur in a prominent ridge facing Howe sound. A large ironstained bluff first attracted the serious attention of early prospectors. This; upon investigation; proved to be the outcrop of a large copper orebody. The highest outcrops were 4; 300 feet above sea-level.The original discovery was made in 1888, but no real development took place until 1902. The first mining was done in what came to be known as the Jane orebody, and some production was obtained from this in 1905. Underground exploration led to the discovery of several other orebodies. The first main adit, the 1,050-foot level, was driven to tap the ore at an elevation of 3,300 feet above sea-level. During succeeding years, however, long adits were driven from points lower down on the mountain side. These, with connecting shafts, followed the ore to horizons well below sea-level. The lowest working has now reached to 880 feet below sea-level. The property has been in almost continuous operation since its original exploitation in 1905. Until the end of 1944, 732,414,420 pounds of copper and 261,125 ounces of gold had been produced from the mine."

The rising energy costs and environmental considerations in mining necessitate the development of energy-efficient copper and gold processing plants. This paper presents an analysis of technical strategies aimed at reducing energy consumption in these plants. Key approaches include the integration of advanced ore sorting technologies, High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), Coarse Particle Flotation (CPF), and high-intensity flotation. Ore sorting enables early-stage waste removal, reducing the downstream processing load and associated energy use. HPGR technology, recognized for its energy efficiency, contributes to significant energy savings in comminution circuits by reducing reliance on traditional grinding methods. CPF technology further optimizes flotation performance by enabling the recovery of larger particles, thereby decreasing the need for fine grinding and reducing overall power demand. High-intensity flotation units enhance separation efficiency and mineral recovery in a compact footprint, offering further reductions in energy consumption. Together, these technologies provide energy saving opportunities to achieve a more sustainable and economically viable processing operation. THE time has come when, as your President, 1 turn the helm over to my worthy successor. When 1 was reminded by our Secretary that 1 had to prepare an address for this meeting, 1 was at a loss for a subject. In the hope of inspiration 1 perused the records of our Society for some years past. 1 found in these records that many problems in need of solution relative to industry in Nova Scotia were discursively dealt with and that sound thought was given to the solution of these problems, with a natural leaning, of course, to problems pertaining to the mining industry. 1 found also that some of the reasoning was remarkably prophetie. Some of these subjects and problems were: The use of pulverized coal to generate power instead of hydro-electric power; rural electrification; the importance of youth training for an efficient place in industry; the proper marketing of coal; the fuels competing with coal; the need for better in-dustrial relations between employer and employee; better education for success in the social field as applied to industry; and Canadian unity. The issue of some of these copies has been forced upon us by war. For instance, there appears to be no marketing problem for coal, nor does there ? seem to be a marketing problem for anything just at present. The problem of the coal producer just now is supply and transportation. Also, at present, coal fe.ars no competitors, such as oil-and not even hardwood. Many large companies now have an industrial Relations or Personnel Manager and department. Furthermore, we have been compelled of necessity to train our young men, and women also, for both industry and war. However, war does not solve these problems and, with the return to normal times, we may be faced with the same troubles in even greater measure. My reason for mentioning these copies is to point out that, as mining men, we are aU desirous of progress in every industry, not only the mining industry; and that mining men are able to see clearly ahead. In normal times, especially in matters not directly affecting the mining industry, we are inclined to let matters take their own good rime, or let the government do it. We do not seem to realize that these necessary and desirable changes can be made in times of peace-instead of being forced upon us by war or other social upheavals-by the method of sound thought and action to the desired end.

It is well-known that the use of nanobubbles can significantly improve the flotation efficiency of ultra-fine particles. However, this is mainly focused on coal and phosphate rock flotation. In the field of nonferrous metal processing, the related research is few. In this paper, a small laboratory mechanical cell associated with a specially-designed nanobubbles generator was used to investigate the effects of nanobubbles on enhancing ultra-fine scheelite flotation. Nanobubbles were created and based on the hydrodynamic cavitation principle through Venturi tubes. Comparative flotation tests were performed using different tubes to evaluate the nanobubbles impact on the ultra-fine scheelite particle flotation recovery. In order to better understand the nanobubbles enhanced ultra-fine scheelite flotation, nanobubbles potential and size distribution were measured. The effect of nanobubbles on the particle aggregation and scheelite particles potential were also studied through the turbidity tests, microscope tests and zeta potential measurements. According to the results, the mean size of nanobubbles was about several hundred nanometers, and the surface of nanobubbles was of highly negative charge in alkaline conditions. The flotation recovery of ultra-fine scheelite particles was increased in the presence of nanobubbles. The zeta potential measurements indicated that the repulsive forces between scheelite particles decreased when nanobubbles existed. Through the turbidity tests and microscope tests, the promotion effect of nanobubbles on particle coagulation could be verified more directly. The existence of nanobubbles in flotation system promotes the particle aggregation, thus increasing particles apparent size and particles capture by bubbles, which may be the fundamental reason why nanobubbles enhance ultra-fine scheelite flotation.

Caland Ore Company Limited, a subsidiary of Inland Steel Company of Chicago, Illinois, leased an iron ore deposit from Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited on January 1, 1953.. This deposit lay underneath a lake and was covered with 161,000,000 cubic yards of Jake bottom material, mainly silt. Removal of this material was done on a contract dredging basis. This contract was divided into a plant phase and an operating phase. The plant phase consisted of supplying two cutter-type suction dredges, each with two booster pumps in the discharge lines. All six pumps were centrifugal, had 36" discharges and were powered by 10,000 horsepower electric motors. Peak demand was 59,157 kilowatts. One hundred and forty miles of steel tower line were built to bring power to the site. The balance of the plant consisted of tugs, 12 miles of discharge line, varying from 36" diameter to 42" diameter and attendant land-based equipment. A number of interesting dams were constructed

"In the present study, the reduction behavior of composite pellets comprising of iron oxide, synthetic graphite and slags were investigated in a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace. Two different types of slags indicating silicate base and aluminate base slags were chosen to examine the effect of slag chemistry on the reduction behavior of pellets. Slag composition of binding materials has influences on the reactions occurring in composite pellets during direct reduction. In-situ high temperature visualization approach was used to observe the slag / iron / carbon interactions at 1773K (1500°C). The off-gases were measured by means of infrared analyzer to determine the reaction rates of the pellets. Different physical appearances during the in situ reaction inferred a strong correlation between the slag composition and internal reactions. In addition, compression tests were conducted to examine physical strength of the pellets. This investigation was carried out to establish feasibility of physical property control of pellets by selecting optimum slag compositions of binding materials INTRODUCTIONCurrently, most of the iron ore mines have facilities that make an ore more usable for the blast furnace operation by improving its physical properties (e.g. pelletizing and sintering). However, during the process, a large amount of fuel is supplied to indurate materials which consequently deteriorate energy efficiency and produce more CO2 emission. Along with increased interests, direct reduced iron (DRI) making process; simply without coke oven or sintering process, has opened the era of clean and environmental friendly iron making process. While some of the established DRI technologies such as Midrex and HYL were restricted to certain locations where natural gas is abundant, coal based technologies using Rotary Hearth Furnace (RHF) such as FASMET and ITmk3 have been developed with regardless of expensive fuel deposit. In addition to the direct use of pulverized non coking coal and fine iron ore, RHF process also has advantages of utilizing waste materials such as EAF dust, biomass and recycled plastics. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges in the coal utilizing technologies as the unprocessed coal and the waste materials contain huge volatiles and ashes. Although recent investigations on volatiles in a RHF process (Sohn and Fruehan, 2005, 2006) have indicated the benefits of coal in terms of iron oxide reduction and have shown feasibility of multi-layer process, carbon composite pellets still have disadvantages because of its weak mechanical bonding strength. As the mixed system with carbon and oxides generates intermediate gases (e.g. CO and CO2) between solid particles, it is difficult to keep its physical state without the help of binding materials. In this reason, industries have been tried to use various binding materials such as bentonite, kaolinite and Portland cement. However, they are still struggling to find out new materials that provide not only sufficient mechanical strength but also metallurgical properties, such as porosity, reducibility and swelling throughout the reduction reaction. Recently, Canadian researchers (Aota et al, 2006) observed enhanced mechanical strength of pellets by using high alumina cement as a binder and concluded that the method could be used to recycle EAF dust as well, but in depth mechanism of reinforced strength has not been concerned. Most of the ashes coming from binders formulate certain type of slag during the reduction process due to its incombustibility. Thus, observation and regulation of slag property is an essential for the control of carbon composite pellet. Yet, only a little thermodynamic consideration from the perspective of slag chemistry has been adapted in the iron and steel making industries as ash has been easily ignored for its tiny proportion. Cost management in the conditions of increasing competition and unforeseen market turbulence constitutes one of the key areas of the enterprise?s activity. In the last two years the demand for hard coal on the domestic and global market of non-renewable resources has increased significantly. Polish hard coal mining industry, as an industry in the stage of decline, received a chance for rejuvenation. However, one of the most significant conditions of seizing this opportunity is the rationalization of mining costs and improvement of production effectiveness. Due to the significance of this issue, the main objective of the paper is to identify the possibilities of improving the production effectiveness in the hard coal mining industry. In order to meet such an objective, in the first part of the paper we measured effectiveness in the Polish hard coal mines in years 2006- 2011. The research encompassed three out of five mining enterprises operating in the country. Then based on the received results, guidelines concerning the improvement of effectiveness of production were created, taking into consideration infrastructural, technical, economic and organizational determinants. Furthermore, opportunities and threats for improving the production effectiveness, stemming from the external conditions have also been indicated.

All maintenance is carried out in an underground garage, and the facilities for maintenance and field repairs are also described. FOR MORE THAN 200 years, the Kochiu district of Yunnan province has been, and it still is, the hub of China's tin industry. The district produces annually from 80 to 90 per cent of that country's out-put of tin, which averages about 9,300 tons a year and places China fifth among the tin producing nations of the world. The tin ore reserves of the country are estimated (1) at 1,873,370 metric tons, of which 1,500,000 tons are in the Kochiu district. The mill of the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, described in this paper, is the only one of its kind in China. MINING AND SMELTING There are only two tin mines in the Kochiu district operating with modern equipment -the Hsin-Chang and the Lao-Chang, both owned by the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, a government company. The Hsin-Chang mine has four working levels with cross-cuts 6 ft. by 6 ft. and is equipped with steel mine cars and trucks to haul the ore. The ore is hoisted to surface in a three-compartment shaft and transferred to the mill by a 4-kilometer aerial tram. The Lao-Chang mine has two circular shafts 656 feet apart, each equipped with two cages. Haulage-ways 1,600 meters and 1,000 meters long, respectively, have been driven to the southwest from these shafts and are connected by three cross-cuts.

"Energy consumption in stirred mills has been studied, in the last couple of decades, on a macro scale. Effective operation and meeting particle size required for downstream operations used to be the main objectives behind energy utilization of stirred mills. In this paper, three energy terms are defined to assist in understanding the breakage mechanism for various types of minerals versus mill operation. The types of minerals studied had diverse physical and mechanical properties that are summarized as specific gravity, hardness and crystal structure. The minerals utilized in this study were quartz and galena. The effect of quartz and galena mix has been addressed as well as Lead-Zinc ore sample from SAG mill discharge. The energy input to the mill is function of the agitator speed, therefore three agitator speeds were evaluated, 1000, 1500 and 2000 RPM, respectively. The energy terms studied are specific energy (kWhr/ton). Effective energy is the ratio between net energy and total energy consumed by the mill. Last type of energy is the specific breakage energy, which is the net energy consumed by the mill per one-micron breakage. Results showed that specific energy and specific breakage rate are functions of mineral type, while effective energy is only function of mill input power (agitator speed).INTRODUCTIONGrinding is the largest energy consuming component of a mineral processing operation and typically consumes about 50% of the total energy used at a mining operation (Botin, 2009). Over the last two decades, stirred mills have been extensively utilized in mineral processing operations due to increased mineralogical complexity of ore bodies. Stirred mills grind particles to less than 10 µm by applying a high power intensity. The technology has been the focus of several research studies to investigate mill energy and grinding mechanisms. Becker, et. al. (2001) studied the relationship between different types of energy including input energy, specific energy, volume/mass specific energies, to stress intensity and final product particle size. Other studies such as by Kwade (1999), Kwade and Schwedes (2002), Blecher et al (1996), Partyka and Yan (2007), Stender et al (2004), focused on mill design and/or stress intensity distribution. Peukert (2004) studied the effect of mechanical properties of the grinding media and ground material on the comminution process."

Sossego Mine was the first Vale SAG mill operation to process copper-gold ore. It is located in the state of Para, in the south-eastern Amazon region of Brazil. In the first six years of continuous operation, Vale investigated different alternatives for improving circuit performance by investigating operating conditions, mainly focusing on the SAG mill. Today, after a steady increase over five years the annual production rate seems to have stabilized. It is hoped this work will show how the SAG operating practice have been perfected with time and as new data are collected. Historical data of mill grind-outs and crash stops helped create operation curves depending on the ball charge volume and total charge volume. Also noted were impacts on throughput due to the effect of reducing liner weight and the ore type characteristics.

The extractive industry has the potential to impact the health and well-being of workers, families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of social performance, project planning considers that activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way across the development cycle (i.e. from exploration ? post-closure). In this context, health impacts of mining can be mapped and extend over the Life of the Community and can encompass worker injury and disease, exposure to communicable and non-communicable diseases, and health outcomes specific to family and community health and well-being outside the fence. To contribute to an emerging field focused on Health and the Extractive Industry, this paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining, oil and gas companies with operations in Australia and Canada. The objective of this review is to map corporate approaches to public health management across our previously developed Life-of-Mine within Life-of-Community (LOMLOC) framework in order to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments across the project cycle, as well as identify the level of prevention targeted by this investment activity (i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of detrimental health impact). With the extractive industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, this paper provides preliminary comparative information about corporate health spending by some companies in Australia and Canada. This information serves as a resource for minerals industry managers, civil society and regulators regarding current health management approaches in this sector.

Northern Australia has been home to uranium mining for over 70 years, more or less continuously. In the early days, post World War 2, there was little effort made to remediate workings at the end of operations. The three “campaigns” of uranium mining (1951-55; 1960-70; and 1979-present) are all now in various stages of remediation. This includes not only the large legacy site at Rum Jungle but also smaller fields like the South Alligator Valley, as well as contemporary works at Nabarlek and the ongoing closure at Ranger– Australia’s longest operating uranium mine. This paper briefly describes some of the past remediation activities before providing an update on the Ranger closure programme and future timetable.

"IntroductionTHE LOW-VOLATILE bituminous coals of the Brazeau field, Nordegg, Alberta, are soft and weak in structure. The seams contain .bands of inferior material, locally designated 'black jack', and thin bands of friable carbonaceous shale having no definite horizon but usually 'floating' in the seam. Because of the weakness• of the coal and the friable nature of the shale bands, run-of-mine coal usually contains a very high percentage of fines, as •Shown in the following table:SIZE WEIGHT. %Plus 1/2 in 25.61/2 – 1/4 in 13.31/4 - 1/8 in 14.6Minus 1/8 in 46.5The most convenient way of cleaning the fine coal would be by treating it in association with the coarse coal, so that no additional plant would be necessary. To a limited extent this is possible in certain types of equipment, notably the jig. A system of washing without pre-sizing is not •attractive, however, when dealing with the friable coal under consideration, which contains •a preponderant proportion of fines. At the new Brazeau washery, separation is made at 3/8-inch on •a Robins 'Vibrex' •screen, the coarse sizes being cleaned in •a standard pulsator-type jig. A feldspar jig is used to clean the minus 3/8-inch fraction."

The RAF or copper fire refining process at the Caletones smelter of CodelcoChile consists of several pyrorefining stages that successively lowers the levels of S, Fe, Pb, As, Sb, Te, Se and to some extent 0 in the copper melt, allowing the production of high quality fire-refined copper of 99.93 % purity (RAF copper). This chemical feature of the RAF copper is only achieved by quite long processing times, and a considerable consumption of fluxes and fuels in the RAF vessels. The main goal of this study was to improve the RAF process performance by thermodynamic considerations and industrial scale tests, i.e., an in situ approach for the process as featured by intensive sampling, characterization and subsequent modifications. Thus, both theoretical and industrial data were derived, and based on kinetic and thermodynamic evaluations, a higher operational standard was achieved for the RAF process. These new operational practices allowed enhancing the overall economic of the RAF process, by reducing the time and operational costs, and consequently increasing the availability of the vessels.
