"Nickelhütte Aue GmbH is specialized in the recycling of waste materials containing non-ferrous metals. We treat nickel, copper, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum and precious metal containing materials like spent catalysts, ashes, dusts, grindings, liquids, slurries and sludge's as long as they contain one or a combination of the above mentioned metals. In our pyrometallurgical works we produce non-ferrous metal concentrates suitable for further treatment in our hydrometallurgical plant where we refine Ni-, Cu-, Co- and V-chemicals. Our production is based on synergy effects due to the combination of pyro- and hydro-metallurgy. As an example we can mention our heat recovery system and internal recycling of by-products. Furthermore, the use of alternative fuels instead of fossil fuels contributes to the economic and environ-mentally friendly treatment system.INTRODUCTION Nickelhütte Aue GmbH (NHA) can look back on nearly 400 years of tradition as a pyrometallurgical works and recycling company. The existence since its foundation in 1635 as a blue dye works shows responsible and successful action in the past. Therefore, we see highest customer service, minimization of interferences with nature by closing material cycles and maximized health and occupational safety protection by avoiding injuries and diseases, still as our future duties. Sustainability of the hydrometallurgical industry requires the development of processes for effective water recovery; if process water is recovered and recycled, fresh water intakes will be reduced. Forward osmosis (FO) is an innovative membrane process that promises to recover water from industrial process aqueous streams or seawater with less energy input compared to reverse osmosis (RO) and evaporation; the energy efficiency relies on the spontaneity of the process (no energy input required). The driving force of the process is the osmotic pressure gradient between a dilute feed solution (process water) and a concentrated draw solution. The draw solution is an engineered aqueous solution that contains a highly soluble chemical reagent that is able to osmotically "draw" only water from the dilute stream, through a semi-permeable membrane, leaving behind a small volume of concentrated brine. The draw solute is separated and recovered for reuse, leaving behind water. The main energy requirements of the FO process arise from the separation and the regeneration of the solute chemicals from the diluted draw solution. This work focuses on the evaluation of aqueous carbonated trimethylamine (TMAH:HCO3) as the draw solution and reports recent findings on the separation efficiency of TMA and CO2 from the solution.

"Sherritt Gordon's experience with rubber mill liners began in 1964 at the Lynn Lake Farley Mine and continued at the Fox Mine in 1960, and the Ruttan Mine in 1973. This paper describes the history of the performance of rubber mill liners at the three mine operations.LYNN LAKE - FARLEY MINEThe Lynn Lake Farley Mine, which ceased production in 1976 due to exhausted ore reserves, was a 3500 T.P.D. copper-nickel operation; consisting of two parallel rod mills followed by three stages of ball mill grinding. A circuit modification in 1964 necessitated one of the tertiary ball mills to be used as a pyrrhotite regrind mill. This 8' x 5' Hardinge conical mill drawing 225 HP was initially installed with steel liners and lifters. After several months of operation a routine inspection revealed severe channeling and washing behind the liners which was threatening to erode the ball mill shell. It was thought that the highly acidic condition in the mill, due to grinding 100 º6 pyrrhotite, was accelerating the wear of the steel liners. At this time it was decided to reline the mill with rubber liners to see if the wear problem could be relieved, and in December 1964 a set of Skega rubber liners were installed."

The magnetometer which was developed during the war for detecting submarines has proven exceedingly valuable in outlining deep-seated structures in oil exploration, and will be useful also to geologists in outlining regional structural features in the Precambrian. Our magnetometer has been developed to outline local and detail structures. 1 am quite sure that all geophysicists and geologists would agree with me that, in ore prospecting, it is important to obtain as much detailed information as possible. We know that, as we ascend from the ground and get away from the magnetic ore-bearing structures and orebodies, the magnetic intensity decreases rapidly, but, worse than that, we lose the details even faster. Figure l shows two strong, very sharp, magnetic 'highs' over two orebodies which, as our distance increases, rapidly merge into one fairly broad, moderately strong anomaly. If we drilled on this maximum, we would not encounter any of the orebodies. Therefore, we should fly the airborne magnetometer as close to the ground as possible in order to duplicate the results of the magnetic ground surveys. The first chance to accomplish this came with the helicopter, which is an exceedingly maneuverable aircraft. It can be landed in a cleared space not much more than fifty feet square. With floats, it can be landed anywhere, even in a swamp, on thin ice, or on soft snow. It can stand still in the air, hovering over a given point. It can ascend and descend vertically, fly sideways and even backwards, at the will of the pilot. It flies forward at any speed up to l00 miles an hour. The helicopter can be taken to any desired position at a given time. It can fly at any useful altitude from a few feet to several thousand feet above the ground. It can fly very close to the ground with safety. In bare areas, the survey flight may be performed a few feet above the ground. In forested areas, however, the flights, to clear the trees, must be made at l00 to 150 feet. To mark out a certain point, a small parachute-like marker may be draped over a tree or laid on the ground. This can be done from the helicopter without touching the ground.

"Electrical disintegration (ED) has been well known as a good comminution method to improve liberation of compositional phases because it was reported that electron avalanche could occur preferentially at phase boundary. But the detailed mechanism of the ED has been still not known. This paper describes the results of ED experiments using synthetic binary sample, copper/resin, under the conditions of various distance between electrodes, and discusses the energy distribution in the three kinds of phenomena in the ED process, which are(1) streamer progression in water, (2) electron avalanche in water, and (3) electron avalanche in solid sample, by measuring current and voltage with elapsed time. Then, it has been found that the energy distribution in the phenomenon (1) is quite low and that the distribution in the phenomenon(2) had a considerably large compared with that in the(3), which indicates that the shockwave generated in water could contribute much to the sample breakage.INTRODUCTIONElectrical disintegration (ED) has been well known as a specific comminution technology which enhanced selective breakage at phase boundary and lead to a good liberation among compositional phases1-6),but the detailed mechanism has not been clarified yet. "Abstract -The common style of gold mineralization in the Basal Reef and other auriferous conglomerates of the Witwatersrand Supergroup comprises clusters of gold grains occurring interstitially to quartz and pyrite pebbles as well as gold accumulations attached to the surface of and infilling hairline cracks and fractures in round, compact, detrital pyrite. The latter textural association is generally interpreted as a result of remobilization of originally detrital gold during regional metamorphism and related hydrothermal fluid circulation. There is general agreement that, although gold solubility was Iow, ore modification occurred during the metahydrothermal event, but uncertainty exists about the magnitude and scale of gold remobilization .Micro-textural and chemical investigation of compact round pyrite and associated gold accumulation has established that gold is preferentially deposited on chemically heterogeneous pyrite surfaces. Combinations of alternating high- and low-As zones in pyrite result in mixed np-type conductivity accompanied by electron exchange and the reduction-driven deposition of gold at the cathode. This mode] does not explain gold accumulations which are not immediately linked to chemical heterogeneities and it is inferred that an additional control on the deposition of gold was exerted by physical defects which lead to zones of increased charge density and/or areas of focussed conductivity. The inferred precipitation mechanisms suggest that submicrocopic physical and chemical controls are the important factors that determined the sites of gold nucleation and that precipitation mechanisms based on physicochemical changes of the hydrothermal system were not involved. The Basal Reef contains on average close to 5% of round, detrital, chemically zoned pyrite which provides a large number of electrochemically active pyrite surfaces. The extremely effective electrochemical precipitation mechanism together with the low solubility of gold in Witwatersrand fluids is the main reason for the spatially restricted remobilization of gold in the conglomerate reefs."

This work concerns comparison of corrosion resistance of the aircraft aluminum alloy composed of Al - 2.3%Li - 0.1% Zr. The alloy was hot rolled (HR) from 13 mm to a thickness of 4 mm (e = 2.4) and 1 mm (e = 5.2). Corrosion resistance was investigated by Potentiodynamic Polarization Test. The investigation relied on exposure samples in two different corroding medium: 0.5 M NaCl solution and 0.01 M Na2SO4 solution with added 0.01% of Cl- at room temperature. Furthermore, the microstructure was analyzed using the optical microscope with polarized beam. The hardness was measured on lengthwise profile. It was stated that alloy after the largest deformation (equivalent total strain e = 5.2) is characterized by the best mechanical properties and the best corrosion resistance. The alloys in initial state and after deformation to 4 mm (e = 2.4) are characterized by worse corrosion resistance. It is associated with microstructure and density of dislocation in analyzing material.

"The stability of underground structures made (especially) in jointed rock mass is of the utmost important to designers, engineers and operators. Rock bolting is generally being practised to reinforce excavation walls and roofs by minimizing the movement of rock joints. This study proposes a new analytical model for the prediction of displacements, axial load and shear stress of a fully grouted rock bolt intersected by single or multiple rock joint(s). The governing equations for rock bolt are derived based on the assumption that shear force generated by slippage along the bolt-grout interface has a linear relationship with respect to the relative displacement at the interface. The proposed model is novel compared to the existing literature in the sense that it accounts for rock kinematics as an enriched sum of a continuous part (elastic) and a discontunous (jump) part due to the presence of joint planes. The complete solution of the bolt displacement, axial load and shear stress is derived as a function of the rock displacements, and, it comprises of Heaviside and/or Dirac delta functions in the solution space due to the jump at the intersection point(s) of bolt(s) and joint(s).Our novel solution is able to predict the elastic behavior of a grouted bolt, subjected to opening of the joint planes in pull-out test and also in excavated tunnel. These two cases also serve as benchmarks for grouted rock bolts with multiple joints and can be used for validation of numerical and experimental models. Further, the solution is applied to analyze the behaviour of grouted rock bolt as well as cable bolt installed in circular tunnel, with variations in rock joint(s) opening displacement, shear stiffness in the boltgrout interface and locations of the joint planes. Results indicate that for a specified grout stiffness, the maximum axial load developed in the bolt for discontinuous distribution of rock mass displacement is significantly higher than that of the continuous distribution of rock displacement. This paper provides an analytical interpretation of bolt beaviour considering multiple joint planes with variable joint opening displacements. The results obtained via the analytical method are in line with the corresponding investigation done by other authors. Thus, our analytical treatment can be used to understand bolt behaviour in realistic situations."

Industry today is now more than ever dependent on its assets and on the standard of maintenance. Changes in technology, environmental regulations, a continually improving focus on safety and global competitiveness has made maintenance a key activity in sustaining safe, financially viable and environmentally integral operations. Maintenance used to be looked upon as a cost centre with a sole focus of fixing equipment to attain high availability. Maintenance today affects all aspects of the business: safety, environmental integrity, energy efficiency, productivity, costs, and product quality. These new demands on the function of maintenance requires us to think vastly differently about what maintenance is all about, even to the point of contradicting old beliefs. In the following paragraphs we will examine some of the changed thinking that has evolved over the last 50 years. These new concepts will lay the foundation for the implementation of 21st century best practice maintenance.

The effect of interrupted quenching (IQ) treatments on natural aging and bake hardening response of Al-Mg-Si alloy was investigated by hardness measurements, tensile test, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that interrupted quenching at 100oC could effectively suppress natural aging and improve bake hardening response. The optimized interrupted quenching treatment is 100oC for 45min, which gives the alloy a relatively low T4 temper strength and higher bake hardening response. The formation of highly dense cluster(2) during the interrupted quenching could be the reason for suppressing the natural aging and accelerating the precipitation of ß? phase during the paint bake treatment. In addition, interrupted quenching at higher temperature (170oC) results in unfavorable properties in both T4 temper and paint bake treatment. The formation of large precipitates is responsible for these undesired effects.

The recrystallization and texture evolution of AZ31 sheets obtained through two stages was investigated at different stages of post-rolling annealing. The specimens were rolled at the temperature of 100? and at a fast speed of 1000m/min and low speed of 15m/min with a reduction of 30% in one pass. The results show thatAZ31B sheets rolled at 15 m/min and 100 °C has fractured for reductions of more than 30% per pass. However, by increasing the rolling speed to 1000 m/min the rollability was improved significantly and the material can be rolled to reductions of more than 70% per pass. The high speed and heavily deformed materials are fully recrystallized even at 100 °C.

"Carbon-in-leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processes utilize activated carbon to adsorb solubilized gold for recovery. Due to carbon attrition and non-ideal carbon management, however, some of the gold is lost in carbon fines and to the solution. The carbon attrition mechanism inside CIL/CIP reactors is mainly abrasion-related. This is critical to gold loss since gold loading takes place predominantly in the outer shell of the carbon particles. Thus fine carbon dust has a relatively high gold content and such a small particle size that it cannot be captured with safety screens. The attrition rate depends on ore and carbon characteristics, but it is always proportional to the mixing power intensity. This rate can be minimized by continuous suspension level measurement and control of agitation speed. In addition, a novel tank bottom structure can significantly reduce the required mixing power input compared to a flat bottom tank. A major challenge in carbon management is infrequent and inaccurate measurement of carbon concentration in the reactors. In order to reduce soluble gold losses by means of improved carbon management, Outotec has been developing a continuous in-situ measurement for carbon concentration that is tolerant to changes in slurry density.INTRODUCTION Cyanide leaching has been utilized since the late 19th century as a standard technology for hydrometallurgical gold production. Since then, gold and silver recovery rates have increased due to technological development, but very similar recovery methods are still being used. The original recovery method was to use zinc precipitation – similar to the Merrill-Crowe process, which is still common for feed materials with low throughput and high silver content. However, in most cases, activated carbon recovery is preferred due to its improved efficiency. The carbon-in-pulp process (CIP) and its modification, carbon-in-leach (CIL), have a lower residual soluble gold level and are not similarly affected by soluble base metals. The main alternative for the use of carbon is ion exchange resins. The principle of resin processes is similar to the CIL/CIP processes, with a different type of adsorbent material. Carbon processes are usually preferred over resin processes due to the significantly higher cost of resin material and the possibility to use simpler, well-established technology with carbon processes."

Common water-miscible organic solvents including DMSO, DMF, methanol, ethanol, acetone and THF in combination with HCl and low concentrations of H2O2 were investigated for dissolution of gold. THF showed the best result demonstrating that gold powder could be completely dissolved in 1.5 hours in 1.0 mol/L HCl and 0.2 mol/L H2O2. No complete gold dissolution was observed for the rest of solvents even after 24 hours. The rate of gold dissolution was measured by dissolving gold wire in THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture. The rate of gold dissolution in optimised condition was 75 g m-2 h-1 at room temperature and significantly increased to 590 g m-2 h-1 by raising the temperature up to 60 oC. Although a THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture showed a slower dissolution rate in comparison with aqua regia, however the applied conditions are considerably milder which is highly promising for gold leaching in an industrial scale.

"This paper describes a guidance system for autonomous underground mining vehicles, which does not require any infrastructure or inertial positioning systems to aid the guidance process.BackgroundINCO Limited mines approximately ten million tons per annum through 12 operating mines in the Sudbury, Ontario, area (Fig. 1). With challenges from operating in a cyclical marketplace as well as new technologies making alternative nickel ores more competitive to refine, the Mines Research department embarked on a strategy that pointed toward automation as a tool to help the company become even more economical in mining.The mining industry has been looking for ways and means to mine orebodies more and more inexpensively. Automation and the lessons learned from manufacturing had a great influence in the direction of research at INCO Limited over the past ten years. Guidance systems have evolved over the years but the majority of commercially available systems rely on some form of infrastructure. This, in part, has caused some resistance from operators to install and maintain automated or semi-automated systems for guidance of underground machinery.Internal industrial studies cited travel time to and from the workplace as one of the major time sinks in the shift of underground miners. Depending on the mine, it may be as much as two hours moving in and out of an area. Some work areas have accommodated this by having “hot changes” at the work place. However, at some point in time, there are two people tasked with the same job and on site at the same time to make this overlap occur.Tele-operation of underground hard rock equipment eliminated this overlap and also provided a comfortable environment in which to work. By taking advantage of the communications network installed, the miners proved that they could operate three machines with relative ease. This was accomplished by a vision-based, “painted line,” autonomous guidance system termed the light rope system.With a few years’ experience with the system, some issues have arisen, including the cost of the rope itself (Fig. 2).The vehicle’s route is limited to the paths defined by the light rope, and a system of switching power to the light rope to select different routes is required. The rope itself is subject to damage from nearby blasts. Also, the system offers no obstacle detection; the vehicle may be switched off as a means of shutting the machine down thus protecting personnel in the area."

The Internet is creating new distribution channels and offers new technology platforms with significant advantages over more traditional methods. Mines will have to re-evaluate both the strategies and the tactics employed in these areas. Mines will use e-commerce to integrate their maintenance, repair, and operating supply chains. The integration will extend beyond traditional trading partners to a worldwide network of communities with similar interests and goals. The changes will transform the way mines operate, lower mining costs, and thereby increase their chances of success in an increasingly competitive environment.

"Given the high demand of copper and the lack of new high-grade deposits, low grade copper ores containing copper oxides and refractory sulfides need to be processed as well. However, in order to recover copper from refractory copper ores, the leaching performances should be improved. In this study, we investigated the effect of the mechanical activation in the leaching of copper from covellite. The influence of a mechanical treatment by planetary ball milling on leaching rate in sulfuric leaching media was evaluated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), mineral liberation analysis (MLA) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Results showed a significant increase in copper leaching from around 50%up to 100% along with an improvement of the leaching kinetics when using planetary ball milling. XRD spectra showed the disappearance of the covellite peak from (101) face, thus suggesting the amorphization of covellite associated with the use of planetary ball milling. XAFS results showed that the coordination number of Cu changed from 6 to 3, thereby confirming the effectiveness of the mechanochemical effect.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last decades, while the copper grade in copper ores has been decreasing, the concentration of impurities such as arsenic tends to increase, thus requiring for the processing of low grade copper ores. For a suitable processing of copper minerals, hydrometallurgical processes are preferable due to the lower costs, the lower environmental impact and the easier implementation (Watling, 2006). However, for an economical recovery of copper, the leaching performances must be improved.Among the recent advancements in leaching technologies, the mechanochemical activation allows for an improvement of the leaching performances by means of high-intensity grinding(Mohammadabad et al., 2016). In the first place, the improvement is the result of the dramatic decrease of particle size, which results in an increase of the mineral surface area and the consequent enhancement of leaching kinetics. Furthermore, the intense mechanical stress due to the high-intensity grinding could induce the rupture of the crystal structure producing a decrease of crystallinity. Such changes of the mineralogical structure, also known as mechanochemical effect, can lead to more leachable mineral, thereby resulting in a greater dissolution of copper. Last but not least, whereas the mineral surface might undergo passivation during leaching, the high-intensity grinding can continuously refresh the surface of the mineral, thus exposing portions of unleached bulk mineral."

Detailed stratigraphic studies in the Birch-Uchi Lakes area have shown that the volcanic components are arranged in superimposed sequences, or cycles. Each cycle displays a progression from predominantly mafic effusives below to predominantly felsic extrusives above. Sedimentary rocks are preferentially associated with the felsic extrusives. Two volcanic cycles are represented. The average stratigraphic thickness of the volcanic rocks present is 31,000 feet. The original volcanic pile was probably in the order of 40,000 feet thick. The present lithologic composition is estimated to be: mafic volcanic rocks, 60 per cent; felsic volcanic rocks, 27 per cent; sedimentary rocks, 10 per cent; and others, 3 per cent. Gold occurrences are preferentially distributed with respect to the volcanic succession. Of fifty recorded occurrences, thirty-nine are located in the upper felsic division of the lower volcanic cycle; forty are associated with closely interbanded daciterhyolite pyroclastic rocks, andesitic lavas and siliceous sediments. The gold-bearing quartz veins either lie at the contacts of enclosing lithologic units or occupy cross-cutting fractures in one or more adjacent units.

The São Bento concentrator was built by Gencor in 1985 to treat refractory gold-bearing flotation concentrate. The plant was the first commercial application of pressure oxidation for refractory gold ore following about a year after the first use of pressure oxidation on a whole ore at Homestake's McLaughlin operation in California. Ore from the Sao Bento mine is remarkably consistent in gold grade and arsenic and sulphide concentration as is typical in banded iron formations (BIF) (l). Gold content is approximately 9 g/t with approximately 30 - 40% free milling. The balance is associated with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. An expansion of both process facility and mine was undertaken between 1996 and 1998, raising the treatment capacity from 32,000 t/mo to 45,000 t/mo.

"This paper outlines the upgrading of a double-drum 2000 hp cage hoist to provide fully-automatic operation from shaft station control panels. The application utilizes programmable controller technology to provide all necessary functions for movement of personnel and material to 22 locations in a 4000 ft shaft.Various functions involving special design considerations such as ""chairing"", ""jogging"", and three modes of ""multi-level calling service"", are outlined. The use of higher level PLC functions to optimize memory utilization and simulate ""elevator service"" required the addition of a comprehensive fault finding software section to aid in troubleshooting.This paper will deal primarily with the automation portion of the project with references made to other pertinent aspects which were prerequisite to automatic operation. It is not intended to deal with every design detail, but rather to provide an overview of what can be done in the area of automation for those considering such an application. INTRODUCTIONEarly hoisting control systems provided only the essential elements of control, leaving many responsibilities with the operator. With advancements in various areas of technology, electromechanical devices were incorporated to enforce slow-down in end zones, control acceleration rates, monitor safety devices, etc. Brake control systems were supplied to allow for ""single-stick"" operator control, regulated deceleration during emergency brake applications, etc.These additions enhanced the over-all performance but were generally confined to speed and current regulation. Some mechanical devices, such as travelling nut limits, etc.; were used to provide ""position"" control to multiple locations within the shaft. These devices, in conjunction with rather extensive relay control panels, did allow for the establislunent of some automatic cage hoists . Only limited systematic work sequences were possible . .Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) were introduced into industry in the mid-70s and have since gained acceptance in mining applications such as pumping, ventilation, ore handling, etc. This technology, being ""software"" based, allows complexities to reside in the program rather than increasing the number of physical control elements. This has opened the door into hoisting systems for automatic loading and hoisting of ore as well as a means to achieve a comprehensive package of automated cage hoisting functions."

Production efficiency from low permeability gas shales require techniques to optimize hydraulic fracture completions. One completion strategy involves the simultaneous or near simultaneous hydraulic fracturing of multiple horizontal wells to maximize the fracture network area and stimulated reservoir volume. However, changes to the in-situ stress field caused by an earlier hydrofrac on subsequent hydraulic fractures are not accounted for in traditional hydrofrac design calculations. Presented here are the results from a set of transient, coupled hydro-mechanical simulations of a rock mass containing two wellbores using the discontinuum-based distinct-element method. The results demonstrate the influence of stress-shadows generated by a hydraulic fracture on the development of subsequent hydrofracs from an adjacent well. It is shown here that these interactions have the potential to change the size and effectiveness of the hydraulic fracture stimulation by changing the extent of the hydraulic fracture around the secondary well.
