In the September issue of the Bulletin, 1923, there is a paper by J. A. H. Church on "The Spontaneous Combustion of Coal in Mines", which is more or less a general discussion of the subject. Mr. Church gives a list of mine fires which have occurred in Alberta. Of the total of thirteen fires, six are attributed to spontaneous combustion. Of these six fires, it will be noted that five are in thick pitching seams. These fires occurred in the following mines during the years shown, at Frank in 1909; at Lovett in 1916; at Cadomin in 1920; at Yellowhead in 1922, and at Cadomin in 1923. Every one of these fires has occurred, as Mr. Church points out, in a seam of over 12 feet in thickness, and furthermore not one of these fires has been extinguished, although in every case large sums of money were expended and considerable risks . taken in fire fighting. Now it is quite evident from these facts that mines working seams of this nature are faced with a very grave danger and it behooves us to study the matter and endeavor to arrive at some practical method of preventing the loss of our coal mines from this cause.

ABSTRACT Fierce market competition and demand have made it imperative for mining companies to achieve higher productivity and operational efficiency. The selection of the best mining method and equipment combinations will enable companies to meet production and efficiency targets. Continuous mining is increasingly preferred by companies for its high efficiency and low unit costs. We developed simulation models for two continuous mining systems: the continuous surface miner (CSM) system and the at-face slurrying (AFS) system. Considering two different case studies, the paper discusses application of developed models to determine the optimal number of trucks and equipment capacities for the two systems.

DISCODAT is a system of computer programs written for CANMET, Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and resources, to be used in analyzing geological data for rock slope design. The programs were written in Fortran IV for an IBM 360/67 computer. A program conditions field data from field forms for storage in a line file. Data may be selectively retrieved from the line file by a general retrieval program which uses a variety of relational operators. The retrieved data may be displayed as structural diagrams or histograms produced on a line printer or in a number of maps produced on a drum plotter. There is a logical sequence which leads to the characterization of those elements of the subfabrics of a rock mass which may be kinematically active. Structural domains within the rock mass can also be outlined by a procedure described as areal analysis. Costs for a complete analysis are usually substantially less than $l/discontinuity.

ABSTRACT In a nickel smelting process, large amounts of off-gas emissions are generated, which can cause serious environmental and plant hygiene problems if not properly treated. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations, an enhanced understanding of well-controlled, off-gas cleaning systems is vital. In this paper, dynamic models for an industrial smelter, off-gas system tackling hazardous sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide are developed using mass continuity, momentum, and energy conservation laws. The effect of air in-leakage is explored under different operating conditions. The developed models provide an enhanced process understanding and a necessary basis for highperformance control analysis of smelter off-gas systems.

ABSTRACT The subject of gold flotation has been reviewed extensively. Most of these reviews focus on the theories of gold flotation and the physical and chemical effects that may impact the efficacy of the gold flotation process. The current status of gold flotation chemistry as it is being applied in industry has not been widely addressed. This paper reviews current gold flotation practice and research advancements and discusses how these applications tie in with the current understanding of gold flotation chemistry. Survey results from worldwide gold flotation operations are analyzed. Potential future areas of gold flotation research are highlighted.

"The Cobalt camp is by far the most productive camp of the Temiskaming silver-cobalt area. The date of discovery, 1903, is an important one in the history of Canadian mining; from then on prospecting and mining grew rapidly to take the prominent places they now hold in Canadian life.At Cobalt, prospectors and operators, who were to play prominent parts in other Canadian camps, received their initial training. The exploration campaigns leading to the discovery of several new camps were organized at Cobalt, and a considerable part, indeed, of the funds for these campaigns were profits from mining at Cobalt.The discovery of the Cobalt camp was purely accidental, not the result of any purposeful search. Fred LaRose, a blacksmith employed in the construction of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway, discovered mineral, afterwards determined to be valuable, within a few feet of the right-of-way. This discovery became part of the very productive LaRose mine. The publicity given this discovery, particularly by Willet G. Miller, later Provincial Geologist of Ontario, led to the rapid development of the camp.ProductionCobalt is a great camp by virtue of its silver production; cobalt is also important, although clearly subordinate. Copper, nickel, arsenic, and bismuth are by-products of mining for silver and cobalt and have not been of great importance to date.The following table gives the metal content of ores, concentrates, etc. from the Cobalt camp for the years 1904 to 1954 inclusive, as reported by the mines (l):"

"THE LEAD-ZINC and tungsten mines of Canadian Exploration Ltd are on Iron Mountain, 8 miles south of Salmo, B.C., in the Nelson mining division. Relative location of the mines is shown on the general plan.First recorded lead production was in 1908 from surface outcrops. Small amounts of high lead ore were mined intermittently until 1926. No major lead-zinc production occurred until 1949 when outcroppings on the south side of the mountain were mined and diamond drilling began to prove the existence of a large replacement orebody. Lead-zinc ore has been mined continuously from the Jersey orebodies since March 1949, with monthly tonnage as high as 50,000 tons per month, but currently averaging 30,000 tons per month.Schee1ite-bearing tungsten ore was found in 1942 by H. Lakes in an old adit and open cuts at the north end of the Emerald tungsten orebody. The Emerald tungsten mine was developed by the Federal Government as a Wartime Metals project and operated for eight weeks in the fall of 1943, when the poor demand for tungsten closed the mine. Canadian Exploration Ltd. purchased the mine in 1947 and mined in excess of 100,000 tons in 1947-48 until the demand for tungsten dropped again and interest was centred on lead-zinc. The Federal Government repurchased and reopened the Emerald Mine in 195 L and built a new concentrator. The mine and mill were sold back to Canadian Exploration Ltd. in 1952.Regional Geology and IntrusivesThe host rock for both the lead-zinc and tungsten mineralization is the Laib formation of Lower Cambrian age, which consists of 400 feet of crystalline limestone underlain by beds of argillite, and argillaceous limestone locally altered to ""skarn"" or ""tactite"". The Laib limestone is overlain by black argillite and underlain by the Reno quartzite of Pre- cambrian age. Repetition of folded beds has allowed the interpretation of the large isoclinal fold which repeats the limestone (see general cross-section). Dolomitization and the associated lead-zinc ore have been found only in the right-side-up limestone and are not known in the overturned limestone.Two elongated stocks of granite cut the sediments. The Emerald stock outcrops along the east side of the Emerald tungsten mine and again west of the Jersey workings, while the Dodger stock outcrops only at the north end of the Iron Mountain. The shape and attitude of these bodies are believed to have been governed partly by pre-granite faulting and partly by pre-granite folding of the sediments. Although some forceful intrusion may have occurred the detailed granite surface indicates a gentle stoping emplacement."

"Solvent extraction (SX) is one of the most effective techniques for the multi-metal separation. However, repetitive pre-treatment of feed-in solutions and/or multi-steps two phase equilibrating in conventional SX processes were always unavoidable due to the poor separation selectivity between those metals with similar physicochemical properties. In this paper, our recent efforts, aimed to develop a “Three Liquid Phase Extraction” (TLPE) strategy for one-step separation and selective enrichment of different metals respectively into three coexisted liquid phases, are reviewed. Various feasible “Three Liquid Phase Systems” (TLPS) are evaluated. The TLPE technique provides a potential possibility for multiphase extraction to separate multi-metals.INTRODUCTIONLiquid-liquid Solvent Extraction (SX) is one of the most effective techniques for metal separation and purification. Traditionally, extraction and separation of multiple valuable metals from the leaching solutions of complex ores, industrial wastes and byproducts have to face such difficulties that multiple target metals with similar physicochemical properties co-exist in the solutions, and therefore their mutual separation selectivities are very poor. In conventional organic-water two phase SX processes, repetitive pre-treatment of feed-in solutions including the adjustment of the solution acidity, removal of impurities and/or multi-step liquid-liquid two phase equilibration were always unavoidable (Wang and Chen, 2001). Only one of the target metals is obtained in each extraction step, therefore the whole separation processes for multi-metal separation are typically very long and costly.Liquid-liquid-liquid three phase extraction is a developing technique for separation of complex systems containing multiple target components (Tan, 2003; Shen, 2006; Yu, 2009). The technique is in fact a three-liquid-phase selectively partitioning of different target components through the control of phase-forming behaviors of extraction system to create a unique separation medium with three co-existed liquid phases. The separation selectivity of “Three-Liquid-Phase System” (TLPS) may derive from its three-layered liquid phases from up to down with different hydrophobic or hydrophilic environment, and therefore each phase has its own specific selectivity for dissolving of an individual component. In a well designed “Three-Liquid-Phase System” (TLPS), multiphase extraction and selective separation of different components respectively into three different liquid phases can be achieved by only one-step of extraction. Owing to its distinct advantages, “Three-Liquid-Phase Extraction” (TLPE) technique has found many potential applications in purification of various organic chemicals (Shen, 2007) and biological activities (Chen, 2002; Tan, 2006; Jiang, 2008), treatment of environmental wastewaters (Shen, 2006; Yu, 2009; Yu, 2010; He, 2012), extraction of valuable components in natural products (Liu, 2010) and separation of multi-metals in complex leaching solutions (Jin, 2009)."

"Abstract -The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec . Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by ? 0.10% Y203, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% Zr02. The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and cale-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and rninor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in cale-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

THE Michipicoten area, one of numerous iron-bearing "Archean" segments in the Shield, contains two main types of iron formation, a normal Keewatin-type, consisting of interbanded chert, siliceous magnetite and jasper, and, gradational to this, a carbonate-sulphide type which contains large de-posits of siderite and pyrite. The carbonate-sulphide type of iron formation bears a direct and intimate relationship to the volcanic development of the area; it there-by affords some insight into genetic problems of Archeanron formation in general. The purpose of this pa-per is to summarize the geological setting of Michipicoten iron formations and to briefly review genetic aspects of recent work in the area. GENERAL GEOLOGY in largely by assorted volcanics and sediments of the Michipicoten series and younger, regional granite masses. (Fig. 1). The Michipicoten series comprises a thick assemblage of mixed flows and pyroclastics together with elastic sediments and banded iron formations. The four basic types of electric motors -squirrel-cage, wound rotor, synchronous and D.C. -are de-scribed, with particular reference to speed-torque characteristics. The three classifications of squirrel-cage motors, C.E.M.A. B, C and D, are compared, and methods of selection for specific drives are outlined. Wound rotor and synchronous motors are covered from the viewpoint of construction details, methods of operation and control required. The application of these motors to crushers, conveyors and ball mills is described and reasons for their selection are given. The application of D.C. motors to haulage equipment and mine hoist drives is included, and the basic principles of a variable voltage drive are illustrated. Efforts have been made through-out to provide specific examples of motor selection, with particular reference to the mining industry. THIS paper will attempt to answer the question -"which motor should be used for a specific drive?" Although it is impossible to cover the complete subject of electric motor application here, we hope to give some idea of the types of motors available and why certain types are used on specific applications.

Radiation plays a critical role in the thermal behaviour of hydrometallurgical process equipment. This effect is particularly important when designing refractory lined equipment used in pressure leach/oxidation processes. In order to simplify this non-linear mode of heat transfer, the effects of radiation had previously been incorporated in an equivalent convective film coefficient in finite element methods (FEM). This prior method omits the effects of radiosity, a critical aspect of radiation heat transfer, which affects the design of refractory lining systems in autoclave vessels. Given that 60% of the heat loss in actual plant practice of an autoclave is due to radiation, reliability in the FEM is therefore impacted. This study validates the use of radiosity in FEM through thermal loading using a combination of simple geometries to be applied to complex environments such as vessel nozzle clusters. The added benefits of using a radiosity load includes an increase in confidence in thermal distribution results, greater accuracy in determining appropriate refractory lining systems, weld overlay sizing, and increased accuracy in structural analysis.

In the Yellowknife geologic province, 2,600-million-year-old granites are cut by three sets of diabase or gabbro dyke : (1) large dykes striking 70°E to E-W, (2) rare dykes striking N-S to 30°E and (3) an abundant swarm striking N 10°-300W. Preliminary potassium-argon dating has been carried out on whole-rock samples of the chilled margins and coarse centers of the dykes, and on mineral separates from the dykes and contact aureoles. Data from seventeen dated samples suggest that the dyke sets were intruded during three periods of basaltic magmatism -2,200, 1,500 and 1000 million years ago. The two earlier periods closely follow the time of emplacement of granites in the Yellowknife and Churchill geologic provinces. The latest diabase dykes occurring in the Yellowknife province are temporally related to a widespread basaltic magmatism, for which the term Keweenawan is not appropriate. "A novel hydrothermal method was applied to prepare the precursor of LiMn2O4 using pre-treated electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) and lithium hydroxide as the main raw materials. The precursor was subjected to heat treatment between 400 and 900ºC to obtain spinel Li1.05Mn1.95O4 and Li1.035Co0.035Mn1.930O4 positive materials for lithium ion batteries. The structure and morphology of the obtained powder materials were studied in detail by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is found that the precursor has an amorphous structure and a high reactivity, which is easily transferred to spinel structure during heat treatment, obtaining a positive material with an uniform structure and good performances. The XRD patterns reveal that single phase spinel Li1.05Mn1.95O4 can be obtained from the precursor after heat treatment at 600°C in air. The final Li-rich Li1.05Mn1.95O4 product obtained showed a well-defined stable spinel structure and distinctive crystal faces with particle size between 200 and 300 nm. The as-prepared Co-doped spinel sample exhibited a excellent electrochemical performance with an initial discharge capacity of 113.0 mAh/g and 93.8% of its original value was retained after 100 charge-discharge cycling at 0.5 C.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing demand for portable electronic devices and hybrid or full electric vehicles is driving the development of cheap, efficient, compact lightweight and environmental friendly rechargeable batteries systems (Chung et al., 2002; Scrosati, 1995). Lithium ion secondary batteries have satisfied this demand to a greater degree than other battery systems. The cathode material plays a critical role in the performance of Li-ion batteries. The high cost and toxicity of cobalt compounds for the cathode material of LiCoO2 has prompted a search for alternative materials. LiMn2O4-based spinels offer a potentially attractive alternative to LiCoO2, due to its abundance, low price, ease of preparation, environmentally friendly characteristics, better thermal stability, and its effortless recycling (Tarascon et al., 1991; Yabuuchi and Ohzuku, 2003; Amatucci et al., 1999; Tsai et al., 2003). Some achievements have been created to meet the requirements (Guo et al., 2010; Kang et al., 2005; Park et al., 2008; Takahashi et al., 2006; Lee et al., 2001; Yoshio et al., 2001; Arumugam et al., 2008). However, the largest obstacle encountered in the practical applications of LiMn2O4 is its fast capacity fading during long term cycling, which is due to Jahn-Teller distortion of the [MnO6] framework, the electrolyte decomposition at high potentials and manganese dissolution into the electrolyte (Fey et al., 2003). The electrochemical performance of LiMn2O4 is also strongly dependent on its morphological properties, such as crystallinity, phase purity, surface area, grain shape and particle size distribution, etc. All these morphological properties are closely related to the material synthetic routines and heat treatment processes (Huang et al., 2000; Myung et al., 2000; Takada et al., 1998)."

Environmental regulations require means for controlling emissions of SO2 NOx and particulate when burning coal. The combustion of coal in limestone fluidized beds is one of the most promising techniques for the necessary reduction in emissions. Fluidized-bed firing, furthermore, offers potential economies in capital equipment. The world's largest steam generator applying fluidized-bed techniques was built under the sponsorship of ERDA and installed in Rivesville, West Virginia. This paper describes the design and discusses the start-up and development difficulties which were experienced during the period from initial operation to current readiness for commercial operation. Other developments leading to utility and industrial fluidized-bed steam generating equipment are reviewed. The future potential of this promising technique is discussed.

The construction and startup of a new mine is a daunting task. To successfully locate, design, build and startup an immense human endeavour like a new mine, takes perseverance, planning, dedication and significant capital. The application of capital requires a thorough evaluation of risk and where that risk is most properly limited to create the risk/return profile. One area of significant capital and thus, significant risk is the selection and maintenance of the very machinery needed to deliver the creation of investor wealth. Albian Sands Energy is the operator of the new Muskeg River Mine located north of Fort McMurray in Alberta?s oilsands. The Muskeg River Mine is owned by a joint venture of three companies: Shell Canada, Chevron Canada Ltd.and Western Oil Sands. The mine is designed to run 400,000 tons per day, 365 days per year. The mine conditions vary from material as hard and of similar consistency to pavement to underfoot conditions as soft as saturated sands. Water cannot be drained below surface conditions, shovel teeth can disappear in less than 24 hours and the primary business is often constructing large civil structures that have little to do with the delivery of ore. The mine starts with the deposit (if it doesn?t exist, nothing else matters), moves into the design, the feasibility study and the approval. The evaluation of risk and the strategies surrounding the control of that risk truly lie after these stages are complete. The strategy and execution stage is where risk is eliminated or accommodated. The point at which the investors money is being spent is the point at which the decisions made cannot be reversed. It is of absolute importance that the execution of the decisions are consistent with the strategy agreed to, lest the investors need to be asked for more money. The key sources of risk identified for the Muskeg River Mine were recruitment of trained and experienced personnel and the delivery of ore to maximize early (<2yr) cash flow. The Muskeg River Mine personnel determined that to minimize risk, personnel would be recruited to operate the mine equipment yet, the requirements for maintaining the equipment would best be held by the manufacturer. The strategy was to obtain the correct equipment for the operation of the mine and leverage the supplier?s expertise to ensure the mine wasn?t training a maintenance organization at the same time as a mining organization. In essence the key strategy for the mine start up and early operation was to leverage the equipment suppliers to maintain and repair the equipment. Albian Sands would maximize the utilization of Maintain And Repair Contract?s.

"Mechanical mixing equipment is common in a wide variety of mining, metals and process applications, such as hydrometallurgical reactors, solvent extraction, digestors, and tanks for storage of slurry or hydrocarbons. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been applied successfully to single-phase mechanical mixing problems for several decades and is established as a reliable design tool. As computational power and CFD codes have improved over the years, there have been significant advances in modelling capabilities including improved models of turbulence, interaction of rotating and stationary components, multiphase flows, and modelling of free surface interfaces, for example. This paper will provide an overview of the application of CFD to mechanical mixing problems. First, it will review the traditional single phase Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) approach and introduce a range of advanced modelling techniques. Three examples of the application of CFD to industrial mixing problems will be given. It will be demonstrated that CFD is an effective tool for reducing technical risk in design, for identifying the root-cause of mixing problems, and testing modifications to existing operations."

"With the plethora of cable bolts on the market, geotechnical engineers can be baffled by the differences in performance claims from the manufacturers but perhaps more importantly they are sometimes at a loss in making an optimal selection matching behaviour with a particular site condition. To this end a new testing methodology has been developed that can cater for the varying types of cable bolt behaviours. The methodology is based on the laboratory short encapsulation pull test (LSEPT) as recommended in the British Standard and overcomes several deficiencies such as cable rotation. Of most significance however, is its inability to measure the post-peak residual performance of high load transfer capacity cables and consequently, there is an inference that these cables may be susceptible to sudden anchorage failure with relatively little yield. This paper details the results of anchorage performance tests of a range of cable bolts and the differences in performance with rock strength and drill hole diameter.INTRODUCTIONA research project was undertaken to develop a new laboratory-scale test apparatus to study the axial performance of fully grouted cable bolts that are used in the Australian underground coal mining industry. Work by Thomas (2012) and others in recent years found there were a number of deficiencies in the testing methodologies making it difficult to determine and compare the performance of the dozen or more different types of cable bolts on the market. This has meant that geotechnical practioners have been hamstrung in optimizing the design of ground support systems in underground environments that are increasingly more arduous.A cable bolt is a flexible tendon consisting of a quantity of wound wires that are grouted in boreholes at defined distances between holes in order to provide ground reinforcement of excavations (Hutchinson & Diederichs, 1996). They were initially introduced into the underground hard rock mining industry in the 1960s (Thorne & Muller, 1964) and since the early 1970s have been brought to coal mining operations."

"IntroductionCIRCULAR structures on the Arctic islands were first noticed early after World War II. During the indexing of the 1950 Royal Canadian Air Force photographs their occurrence was brought to the attention of the Geological Survey of Canada by Mr. W. B. Waugh, Surveyor General. As a result, I. C. Brown ( 195l) of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the air photographs of these structures and discussed theories that might explain their origin. The author, as a member of the Geological Survey of Canada, spent several months in 1952 and 1953 in reconnaissance study of the geology of Ellef Ringnes island, using the Isachsen meteorological station as a base. Twelve days in the summer of 1953 were spent mapping the Isachsen dome and adjacent areas. The Isachsen dome, one of several similar structures occurring on Ellef Ringnes island, is situated 35 miles southeast of the meteorological station.PhysiographyEllef Ringnes island is a mature, stream dissected plain having an average elevation of about 400 feet. The surface of the plain is undulating with a relief of about 150 feet; only a few of the numerous streams that form a dendritic drainage pattern have eroded valleys this deep. Long, low, cuesta escarpments cross' the plain, which is underlain by sedimentary rocks of Lower Cretaceous and possibly younger age. The sedimentary strata have a low regional dip to the southeast; exceptions are found in the vicinity of the domes, where the strata are up-turned, and in the plateau region, northeast of Deer bay, where they are flat lying. The plateau, which is underlain in large part by basalt, is deeply dissected and has an average elevation of 1,000 feet."
