"From1927 to1989, the Hornemineproduced53.7 Mt of ore grading 6.1 g/t Au and 2.2% Cu from two large volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits composed primarily of pyrrhotite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The ore bodies were hosted by a package of chlorite-sericitealtered epiclastic rhyolite tuffs which were deposited in a narrow palaeo-graben located on the flank of a major felsic volcanic centre. M ineralizingfluids percolated upward through the permeable footwall rocks and were further focussed along syn-volcanic, graben-bounding faults. Sulphides were deposited by a process of sub-seafloor replacement of the rhyolite tuffs.Gold-copper-(zinc) mineralization, including ore zones mined between 1985 and 1989 as the REMNOR ore zones, is present throughout the 900 m of felsic volcanic stratigraphy at the Horne. All the deposits were formed by syn-volcanic hydrothermal processes active during felsic volcanism. Based on the analysis of issues associated to conflicts between communities and mining companies in Mexico, this paper suggests actions to make mining more sustainable in Mexico. Interviews with key informants and a revision of documental information available on the internet provided information on 15 cases of conflicts in various parts of the country. The issues varied from incompliance with environmental law to assassination of community members opposing mining. The analysis concludes that mining is not sustainable in Mexico. Both mining companies and the Government of Mexico can make changes to improve sustainability. Mining companies could take a proactive approach and engage in consultation with communities before starting operations. Sharing information with communities on environmental management programs and monitoring results can be a way to start building trust and demonstrate environmental commitments. Companies can implement and evaluate CSR policies to ensure that all staff and contractors are trained on them to reduce and/or prevent corruption and violations of human and indigenous rights. Only 3 of the 15 companies had clear social responsibility policies or sustainability targets, but no reports evaluating them. Complying with the law does not make a project sustainable because of corruption, deficient enforcement, and gaps in legislation. The Government of Mexico should address the following points to make mining more consistent with sustainable development. Update the mining legislation to introduce sustainable development principles and consultation. Incorporate the notion of Free, Prior, Informed Consent (FPIC) for Indigenous People (IP) on all applicable Mexican laws or regulations. The government should not grant concessions on protected areas or indigenous lands without extensive meaningful consultation with the public, IP and land owners. Finally, it is vital to increase SEMARNAT?s capacity to review impact assessment reports and inspect and monitor environmental compliance along the life cycle of projects.

"The Cenex orebody occurs at the intersection of northwest and northeast-trending fault zones that formed during post-Hudsonian uplift. The ore is localized in breccia zones, along faults, and in veins and adjacent wallrocks. The host rocks are Tazin quartzo-fe/dspathic mylonites and ultramylonites and chloritesericite- quartz-graphite-feldspar mylonite schist. The uraniumbearing minerals are finely disseminated pitchblende and uraniferous titanate.The earliest mineralization may have been associated with /ate-stage retrograde metamorphism in the mylonite schist. The main stages of mineralization were associated with brecciation, hematization, carbonatization, and chloritization of the mylonites and ultramylonites. Uranium mineralization was clearly much later than any igneous or metamorphic activity associated with the Hudsonian orogeny.Late post-orogenic uplift, erosion, and deposition of the Martin continental clastics in fault basins were coeval with uranium mineralization. The deposit is consistent with a meteoric-hydrologic system constituting a source for orebearing fluids, hence the close spatial relationship of the uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge area with the basal unconformity of the Martin Group."

Site inspection is an important component of safety management system. In current practices, the inspectors evaluate the safety condition on a construction site with the assistance of a standardised checklist. However, the checklist emphasizes on evaluating the implementation of safety management system, but provides limited task-specific check items for assessing whether the individual construction tasks are conducted under safe condition and in a safe manner. To address this issue, the research presented in this paper aims to provide safety practitioners with comprehensive and taskspecific safety information to promote effective risk identification and facilitate strategic risk control during site inspection. Specifically, this research first builds a project-specific safety information database, which stores potential risks and control measures for each construction task. The research team then develops a mobile decision support tool to retrieve information from the database and support safer decision-making on site. The tool supports users in two ways: one is to provide daily risk checklists and risk control strategies to guide step-by-step inspection alongside the project schedule; the other is to let users input any safety-related keywords during the safety inspection process and the tool returns relevant safety information by applying text mining algorithms. It is ongoing research. This paper presents an overall research framework and discusses the progress in developing safety database and data retrieval concepts. The outcome of the project will help enhance safety management practices and reduce possible risky working conditions on a construction site.

HydraboltTM is a Swellex-type dowel support element developed and manufactured by New Concept Mining in South Africa. Like Swellex, the HydraboltTM is a folded tube which can be inserted into a larger diameter hole without pushing. It is then activated by injection of high pressure water which inflates the folded tube to intimate contact with the walls of the borehole at a set pressure, normally 25 MPa. Unlike Swellex however, the set water pressure at the end of the inflation is maintained throughout the life of the dowel. An integral non-return valve makes this possible. The HydraboltTM is being investigated as a possible stress change measuring cell. This paper presents the results of closed form solutions, numerical modeling and laboratory test to date. Preliminary results indicate that the HydraboltTM can be used as a stress change monitoring cell in addition to its conventional role as a rock mass reinforcing element. If successful, the HydraboltTM will supplement microseismic monitoring systems in rockburst-prone ground conditions where they will give quantitative stress change data for both mine design model calibrations and means for proactive safety measures.

Iron ores concentration at Russia’s operations is carried out using conventional flow sheets. They comprise the two-four stage grinding followed by one-two stage magnetic separation. This results in the maximum recovery of magnetite to concentrate and the tailings generation. The final concentrate is generated only during the last stage of magnetic separation. Technologically, this flow sheet layout is not effective at recovering the liberated magnetite grains during grinding to the resulting concentrate. Advanced models of magnetic separators do not allow for the selective separation of the tailings and the portion of the resulting iron ore concentrate. Magnetic product which is the ore mixture of the liberated magnetite grains, high grade and low grade intergrowths is directed to the next grinding stage. In this case, regrinding of the liberated magnetite occurs. In addition, the performance of hydrocyclones during classification in closed grinding circuits is poor. Their classification efficiency does not provide the material separation in accordance with the size. In this case, simultaneous separation in accordance with the density occurs. The quartz particles with the size of 300 mm have similar velocity and trajectory like the particles of magnetite with the size of 60 mm. As a result, light and coarser intergrowths report to the overflow and free heavy magnetite grains report to underflow and return to regrinding (“the density effect”). This resulted in a significant increase of a mill circulating load, the decrease in the feed throughput and higher power consumption. In this connection, the development of iron ore concentrate stage recovery with the focus on gradual liberation of the intergrowths is getting much attention. Gravity concentration technique, particularly, spiral separation is effective at solving the problem of stage recovery not only the dump waste product but also high grade magnetite concentrates at the early concentration stages. This can be attributed to a significant difference in magnetite (4.9-5.2 g/cm3) and host minerals (quartz 2.7 g/cm3) densities, which is the principal during gravity concentration. The test work on concentration of various products samples from current operations (the mills discharges, concentrates from various stages of wet magnetic separation and cyclones underflows) was carried out. Spiral separators SV-500 and ShV-500 manufactured by Spirit LLC were used for the test work. High grade iron ore concentrate (69.05% Fe) was generated during primary wet magnetic separation concentrate concentration using a spiral separator. During the concentration of mills discharges the content of iron in the resulting concentrates and middlings of wet magnetic separation II stage was 64.5% and 64.6%, respectively. The recovery of iron to the concentrates of spiral separation was 33.6-42.0%. The studies presented demonstrate that by using spiral separation for iron-bearing ores concentration, you can separate magnetite liberated grains at the early concentration stages, decrease their regrinding and circulating loads in grinding circuits. This process is able to improve the overall recovery and economics of iron ores concentration process.

Mining companies around the globe have long struggled with the need to ensure that earth moving equipment is designed to be operated and maintained under all site conditions without causing harm to people. Incident and accident data from a range of sources clearly identify mining equipment related issues as major causal factors. One Australian source, the NSW Department of Primary Industries? International Mining Fatality Database Project Report (2008) noted that ?Approximately 77% of mining accidents resulting in a fatality have? involved equipment?. The largest number of fatalities were associated with trucks; the next with LHDs. Many of the technical advances in equipment design over the past few decades have not been matched by advances in the human factors design of mining equipment, resulting in a ?design vacuum? that must be filled prior to commissioning new equipment. This ?design vacuum? is generally filled by local dealers. They retrofit equipment according to customer requirements to mitigate risks that have not been designed out by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Mining companies have been frustrated by lost time and additional costs associated with this need to retrofit ex-factory designs. Some companies have attempted to address the problem by negotiating company or site-wide ?solutions? to equipment designs, but this has not simplified or clarified the issue from the point of view of the equipment manufacturers. A number of mining companies operating in Australia first discussed the concept of a joint customer approach to improve the Human Factors design of earth moving equipment at the factory level in 2004. They agreed that a new approach to engaging with OEMs was needed; one that would define the ?Problem?, in other words, the basis of the risks, rather than dictate the ?Solution?. The Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) was formally established in 2006 by six global mining companies to establish a process of engagement between Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and mining customers.

"The nature and distribution of the inorganic components and the concentration of certain environmentally sensitive elements, such as, As, Sb, B, Hr, Cd, CI, F, Mo, Pb, S, and Se, or elements detrimental to the utilization by industry such as B, Na, P and S are very important in determining coal quality. The concentration of elements in coal is controlled by the following factors: (1) frequency of occurrence of partings; (2) nature and habit of occurrence of minerals in coal; (3) environment of coal deposition; (4)rank; (5) geological setting; and (6) weathering.Selective mining of coal can reduce the input of undesirable elements such as As and S by eliminating the part of the seam which is enriched in these elements. IntroductionCoal is a sedimentary rock of plant origin and consists of two components: an inorganic component (minerals) which is formed by influx of clastic sediments into the coal-forming environment and also by activities of groundwater, and an organic component (macerals) which is formed from plant debris deposited in the original coal-forming environment. However, coal is a generic term with a broad range of utilization characteristics. A coal that is attractive for use in one market - such as generation of electricity (combustion) - may not necessarily be acceptable for use in another, such as for production of coke (Davis, 1978).The elements in coal are associated with both macerals and minerals. The elements associated with coal macerals, such as C, H and N are termed elements with organic affInities. The concentration of elements with organic affmities (including B, Br, CI, F, I, S, and Mg) often decrease with increasing ash content of coal (Nicholls, 1968; and Finkehnan,1982). FIgure 1 shows such a trend for chlorine. Some of these elements may also be incorporated in coal maceral as very fine mineral grains (Finkelman, 1982). The elements with organic affmities are often volatilized during combustion and carbonization of coal and emitted in the vapour phase. Emission of some of these elements (C, 0, Br, N and S) is of major environmental concern (Lim, 1979)."

This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distribution on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an ex-planation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage toping. Introduction T HE stress pattern around shrinkage stopes is identical with that around other stopes under the same physical conditions. However, a shrinkage stope ends as an unsupported open stope, and the method i limited to the stress range within which the rock is generally self-supporting. If it is acceptable to generalize the outline of a shrinkage stope into an elliptical cross section, then the graphs of Geldart & Udd (1) (see also Panek (2) and Denkhaus (3)) provide a good base for approximating the stress distribution as mining progresses. The goal of this presentation is to firstly, review mine effluent permits in a number of regulatory jurisdictions; and secondly, to develop a strategy for incorporating the regulatory requirements into the environmental assessment (EA) process for new mine proposals. The focus was on the province of British Columbia (BC) and their recent initiative on the One Project, One Process initiative. This task was approached by reviewing mine effluent permits for various regulatory jurisdictions and comparing them to BC mine effluent permits. This comparison revealed a variety of approaches for designing mine effluent permits, but there is a common scientific approach, which supports the conclusion that the permitting of mine site discharges can be designed based on a scientific approach. This approach is expected to: (a) achieve sound environmental protection, (b) demonstrate the application of Best Achievable Technology, (c) incorporate sound sustainability approaches, (d) incorporate regulatory objectives, and (e) create efficiencies for the regulator and mining industry. There is an essential precursor to developing a sciencebased effluent permit for which the proponent must provide: (1) the necessary technical assessment information to demonstrate the mine effluent permit application will result in an environmentally protective effluent discharge, to the satisfaction of the permitting agency; (2) the necessary level of detail for essential mitigation pollution control works to demonstrate how they will be operated to achieve the necessary treatment goals; (3) the necessary level of detail for non-treatment mitigation (passive treatment, or passive pollution control); and (4) the necessary level of detail to demonstrate how pollutants will be prevented from being mobilized (or being generated) from ore and waste materials, or, if the pollutant originates from an added milling reagent, how the reagent will be reduced. While (active) mitigation pollution control equipment is more definable in an effluent permit, non-treatment mitigation is more nebulous in terms of defining in a mine effluent permit; it is therefore recommended that appropriate management plans be developed for essential mitigation pollution control and non-treatment mitigation (passive treatment) and submitted with the proponent?s EA/effluent permit application packages. Major deficits in adequate active and passive pollution control will inevitably lead to regulatory impediments to developing a permit and allowing a mine to be developed, although EA processes strive to preclude major permit information gaps; the onus is on the proponent to provide complete information in this area. Hence the importance of EA processes ensuring that the major technical information requirements for effluent permit development are included in the EA phase. Recently, this aspect of the mine EA process has taken on a new role under the political efforts of One Project, One Review Process (Canadian) and One Project, One Process (in BC). These initiatives translate, in part, to ?synchronous permitting? (in BC): effluent permitting, for example, may be initiated shortly after the proponent submits the EA application to Ministry of Environment.

"Abstract - The Draa Sfar polymetallic deposit, at about 16 km NW of Marrakech in Morocco, is a massive sulfide zone at the contact between an underlying volcanic and an overlying clastics sequence. The mineralized body is a flat lens with schistosity and "boudinage," tilted to the west and with a strong dip to the east. The lens extends over a strike length of about 2 km and from surface to a depth of about 1 km, with thickness varying from 1 m to almost 30 m. It has been intersected by about one hundred surface drill holes and, in its south part, by about thirty underground fan holes from two exploration levels at depths of 300 m and 400 m. On these two levels, the massive sulfide zone has been channel sampled over a cumulative length of about 0.7 km. Results from drill and channel samples are used to estimate the resources of the orebody according to several methods: sections, polygons around intercepts on a longitudinal plan, grids on the same longitudinal plan with various distance weighting methods including kriging and, finally, a 3D grid with the same range of interpolators. A comparison of the various estimates delineates the important factors in deriving resources for this type of deposit. Those factors are mostly geological and related to the interpretation of the geometry of the two limiting surfaces of the zone. For the 3D gridding, the authors have devised a new and original method that constrains the interpolation of blocks from samples to a geometry of limiting surfaces. The resulting model shows internal grade variations that parallel fluctuations of zone thickness and orientation without having to re-orientate the search window in each block. Résumé - Le gisement polymétallique de Draa Sfar, situé à environ 16 km au NW de Marrakech est un horizon de sulfure massif au contact d’une formation volcano-sédimentaire de base et d’une formation détritique sur-jacente. Le corps minéralisé se présente sous forme d’une méga-lentille aplatie, schistosée, boudinée et déversée vers l’ouest avec un fort pendage vers l’est s’étendant sur une longueur de 2 km et une profondeur de près de 1 km avec une épaisseur variant de moins d’un mètre à près de 30 m. Il a été reconnu par plus d’une centaine de sondages de surface et, dans sa partie sud, par une trentaine de trous souterrains en éventail à partir de deux niveaux à des profondeurs respectives de 300 m et 400 m. Sur ces mêmes niveaux, des traçages ont permis de rainurer le minerai sur une longueur cumulée de 0.7 km. Les données de sondage et de rainurage ont servi à estimer les ressources du gisement selon plusieurs méthodes : sections, polygones sur longitudinale, grille sur longitudinale avec différentes pondérations en fonction des distances incluant le krigeage et enfin grille tridimensionnelle avec le même éventail de pondérateurs. La comparaison des estimés obtenus permet de mettre en évidence les facteurs importants dans l’estimation des ressources de ce type de gisement. Ces facteurs sont essentiellement géologiques et relatifs à l’interprétation de la géométrie des limites des corps minéralisés. Pour l’estimation sur grille tridimensionnelle, on a mis au point une technique originale qui calque l’interpolation des blocs à partir des échantillons sur cette géométrie des surfaces de contact. Le modèle résultant montre des variations internes de teneurs qui épousent les fluctuations d’épaisseur et d’orientation de la zone sans qu’il soit nécessaire de ré-orienter les fenêtres de recherche dans chaque bloc."

ABSTRACT: Joseph (2002) introduced passive seismic monitoring to measure mining equipment performance. This paper evaluates the potential of passive seismic monitoring to correlate mining equipment operation with oil sands surface response, with a mining hauler as the seismic source. When applied to moving haulers, this action–reaction approach is complex. Vibrations from on-board equipment, such as pumps and tires, dirty the signal with noise. To facilitate any correlation, the signal must be cleaned up. Existing geophysical analytical techniques were manipulated to evaluate the noise problem and to filter sufficiently to permit an evaluation of whether a mining equipment action–ground response relationshipis in fact discernable.

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. (Glöser, Soulier, & Tercero Espinoza, 2013; Soulier, Glöser-Chahoud, Goldmann & Tercero Espinoza, 2018)

Reading the newspapers, you will know that opposition to ratification on economic grounds always points to the view that action will result in major price increases for energy (to both industry and households) with consequent severe losses of energy production and a loss of competitiveness for energy-intensive producers (i.e., in your kinds of industries). You might think of this as the ?carbon tax? fear, and you should note that many of the initial policy development experiments included variations of this theme. Analysis reported in late 2000 and into early 2002 reported reductions in energy production in the long run of between 10% and 20%. At the upper end of that view, these were the kinds of numbers reported in the Industry Canada study ?leaked? to the Press last week. The consequences of this approach included significantly uneven negative effects for some provinces (e.g., Alberta, but also Saskatchewan and Newfoundland). It had been agreed by the First Ministers of Canada, however, that the policy should not yield those results so development in recent months has focused on eliminating sector and therefore provincial ?sore thumbs?. Although an emissions trading system, which represents this type of approach and directly impacts costs of production, continues to be featured in the new or current policy and is applied to the Minerals Industries among others, it is designed to be implemented in such fashion that the costs are more moderate than before. And because the industries covered by permits are almost all price takers, there is no device for moving an increased price signal forward to ?consumers?. What this does do is even out negative effects among sectors in the economy and for provinces, but at the expense of government financial results.

Abstract Laboratory methods are now in use whereby the temperature and pressure during the crystallization of hydrothermal minerals can be determined. The techniques include the use of the decrepitation method of studying liquid inclusions, and electrical measurements of pyrite. The determinations are sufficiently accurate that the data can be used in solving a variety of ore deposition problems. Within the last year, several new laboratory techniques have been developed in the Geochemical Laboratory of the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Toronto. The results of several tests of ore by these methods have proved to be useful in treating some problems which previously were considered unsolvable. It is now possible to determine the temperature of deposition of most of the minerals in a hydrothermal ore deposit, also the depth below the surface during deposition. Measurements can also be made of the reopening history of a complex ore. The temperature-pressure determinations depend upon the fact that minerals deposited from a hydrothermal solution always trap a small amount of the solution at the time of crystallization. The solution, being predominantly composed of water, has a density which depends upon the temperature and the pressure prevailing during crystallization. After ore deposition is complete, erosion and isostatic uplift finally exhumes the vein. During this slow fall in temperature and pressure, the solution contracts and a gas bubble appears. If the trapped solution in the mineral is examined, the gas-liquid ratio records the density of the solution at the time the mineral was deposited (except for a slight change in the volume of the mineral). The thermal expansion and compressibility of water and water solutions are known to a sufficient degree that, if the gas /liquid ratio can be determined, the temperature-pressure relations during deposition can be calculated.

"The Property of Opemiska Copper Mines (Quebec) Ltd. is in Levy Township, Chibougamau district, west of Chibougamau and south of Opemiska Lake. The original find was made in 1929 by the late Leo Springer and associates of Prospectors Airways Ltd., following observation from the air of an area of dark rocks in newly burned-over country. Work on the ground discovered three veins of high-grade chalcopyrite in gabbro (No. l, No. 2, and ""North"") and, after several seasons of trenching and diamond drilling, financed by Ventures Ltd., a shaft was sunk in 1936. This work indicated about 280,000 tons of six per cent copper ore to a depth of 500 feet. During this period, the senior author carried out a reconnaissance geological survey over the whole property and surrounding claims, which showed that the veins were in the gabbro portion of a large composite basic sill that had been folded with the enclosing lavas. Owing to the low price of copper and lack of transport work was suspended and the property remained dormant until 1951.In that year the company was re-financed, the property prepared for production, and further exploratory drilling undertaken. The drilling, based on structural indications, located a new vein of which the only previous evidence had been some irregular stringers. This vein, No. 3, was traced by drilling for a length of 2,000 feet and the indicated reserves were thereby increased to about one million tons. An additional vein, No. 4, was intersected in several holes.With this encouragement, plans for production were confirmed, and operations commenced' at the beginning of 1954 on a scale of about 400 tons a day, concentrates being shipped by truck to St. Felicien and thence by rail to Noranda. In the first year of operation concentrates were re-covered carrying 14,047,210 pounds of copper, 76,714 ounces of silver, and 6,259 ounces of gold. The operation is under the direction of J. P. Millenbach, General Manager, with J. M. Thompson as Assistant General Manager and F. G. Cooke as General Superintendent on the property."

Introduction Throughout the Great Plains region (the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), numerous clay deposits of widely varying composition and character are to be found. These may be classified into two general types: (1) surface clays, and (2) shales. The surface clays consist of a heterogeneous mantle of silts and clays interspersed with grave! and sand deposits, and may belong to any of the following groups: (1) lake clays: (2) river-terrace or flood-plain deposits; (3) delta deposits . In most cases, the water from which these deposits were ' laid down was derived from the melting ice of the continental glaciers. These surface clays, in general, possess certain characteristics in common, being all more or less calcareous, often silty, and showing a tendency to 'check' in air-drying. The shales found in this region are of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. These deposits have a wide extent, but there is frequently such a heavy covering of drift material that the clays are accessible chiefly along the walls of stream valleys, or along the escarpments of uplands.
