"The application of control theory in mineral processing is more difficult than in other industries because of the complex nature of the unit processes involved and because of problems with accurate on stream measurement of process variables. Conventional control is based on proportional, integral and derivative functions of a continuously measured error term. Computer control can enhance these actions by incorporating logical routines to switch from one relationship to another. The success of this logical approach depends on our understanding of the process dynamics and the stability of the process and model under all conditions. Typically the model does not apply at all times in mineral processing because of frequent and unmeasurable changes in the ore parameters.Recent advances in the theory of fuzzy sets have led to the application of this science to process control. Fuzzy Logic can be used to develop heuristic or rule-of-thumb controllers with the strategy based on the actual operating practice of experienced plant operators. Control action has increased flexibility through the adaptation of human reasoning. Acceptance of the control system by operating personnel is significantly higher because of their participation in its formulation. The requirement of an exact model is not essential.A heuristic controller has been designed and tested with a computer simulation model of a secondary crushing plant. The results of this study are discussed and future applications of this control technique to other mineral processes are suggested. Mineral processes typically are characterized by non-linear relationships between input and output variables. Many of these variables cannot be monitored accurately on-stream and so long time lags on the measurement loop are features of the system. The processes, themselves, often have long time-varying responses while the process loads fluctuate significantly on a short-term basis.Attempts to control these processes have led to the formulation of mathematical models to describe each unit activity. Adaptive techniques have also been tried to compensate and account for process changes and vageries. These approaches are mathematically rigorous so that their complexity and precision limit their usefulness when applied to ""vague"" processes."

"In order to determine the feasibility of a hydraulic ore hoisting installation, the optimal operating conditions were calculated for applying such a system at the Detour Lake Mine of Placer Dome Ltd. Next, a financial analysis was conducted in order to estimate the cost per tonne for hydraulic hoisting of the ore. Subsequently, the cost per tonne was compared with the hoisting costs associated with a new borehole hoist. Installing a hydraulic ore hoist at Detour Lake Mine was found to be feasible with considerably lower costs per tonne of ore. The applied research method appears to be very functional and can be used to do similar research for other mining operations. IntroductionThe principle of hydraulic ore hoisting is well known, yet hardly accepted in hard rock mining. Application of the system would result in a smaller diameter shaft requirement and a flexible, easily expandable system. However, underground ore size reduction might be necessary and practical experience with the system is limited. Following recent innovations in the field of pumping hardware, e.g. new GeHo and Siemag Transplan equipment, hydraulic ore hoisting should be seriously considered for certain mining operations. As a case study, a design was made for the development of the newly found QK-Zone at Placer Dome Ltd.’s Detour Lake Mine. Hydraulic ore hoisting has been compared with conventional skip hoisting by establishing the optimal operating conditions and pumping equipment requirements for similar capacities at a selected mining operation. Generally accepted equations for slurry transport were used to predict the variation of pressure and power requirements as a function of hourly production and pipeline diameter. These data are used to select suitable equipment and estimate cost figures in order to make a financial assessment."

Cleaned coal is becoming an increasingly popular fuel with the utilities for a variety of reasons. Generally, the greatest impetus to burn a cleaned or prepared coal fuel comes from the need to control airborne pollutants.Long-range planning is a standard practice for electric utilities, forecasts of demand must be made well into the future. Since the lead time required to provide new facilities is often as long as 10 years and the cost very high , planning becomes an important task.For a utility that owns and directs the operation of its coal mines, the mine planning or fuel acquisition planning takes on the magnitude of other corporate planning functions. It is from this perspective that a utility would view coal preparation. Except for the interaction of a coal-fi red plant on the actual mine design the planning considerations o f a beneficiating facility for a captive mine or a contract raw coal supply are about the same. Because TransAlta Utilities is currently supplied from captive mines, this discussion will tend to focus in that direction.It is the role of a planner to plan. This is easy to say but it is not always easy to do. Often we are working within a context that resembles the geological time scale. Frequently the objectives are not clearly defined when we begin and ultimately our plans are tested in the waters of government regulations and cost benefit analyses .Planning for beneficiation of Plains coal, or any coal, provides just such a test. The planner's role in this endeavour requires a wide vision. While parts of the process may be amenable to classical methods of project scheduling, the broad range of subjects and interaction of seemingly unrelated tasks is sure to obscure some of the considerations that must be made. Therefore, the planner's chief role is coordinating the work of many experts and specialists toward the final objective.Among the specialists are combustion , geo technical, mining, civil , and mineral processing engineers , geologists, hydrogeologists, soil, and reclamation experts to list a few.When one considers coal beneficiation, the planning part o f that consideration is probably more complex than any other single engineering function. Due to the company's location in the Alberta Plains and the proximity o f the mine to the thermal generating station, this paper will tend to emphasize that situation.Beneficiation may offer some advantages over run-of-mine coal to the power plant opeator. Some of these advantages are: removal of a contaminant, power plant efficiency gains , lower plant capital costs (for new plants), possible lower mining costs."

"In 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited were retained by Dickenson Mines Limited to increase hoisting capacity from 700 to 1000 tons per day. The hoisting capacity of the present skip-over-cage system could not be increased significantly through design modifications. The other constraint was a minimum of disruption to the current production. The Dickenson shaft was a three-compartment shaft from surface to the 8th level and four compartments before the 8th to the 23rd level. The solution to the problem was to remove the services from the shaft man-way compartment from the 8th level to surf ace by drilling a borehole close to the shaft and rerouting those services through the borehole to the 8th level. A service compartment would then be available from surf ace to the 23rd level.By providing a service hoist in this compartment, the skip hoist would then be free to produce the 1000-tons/day required production. This paper will describe the search for the required hoist and the friction hoist selected for the project, and trace the design modifications required to modify the hoist to suit the Dickenson application and satisfy the Department of Labour safety requirements.The paper has been co-authored by J.S. Redpath Limited and C.L. Tiley Associates, who participated in the design changes and eventual commissioning of the hoist.IntroductionIn the earl y part of 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited conducted an engineering study on the Dickenson Mines Limited No. 1 Shaft materials handling system. The object of the engineering study was to investigate the possibility of increasing the tonnage hoisted from the No. 1 Shaft complex by adding a service cage compartment and service hoist. This would permit utilization of the existing hoisting plant solely for production hoi sting. A further consideration of the engineering study was that any alterations had to be accomplished with little, or no, interruption to production."

"Reductive leaching of cobalt (III) from a heterogenite bearing ore has been performed. Pyrite was added to the system and simultaneously bioleached in order to provide ferrous iron as reducing agent. Within such arrangement the iron ions are continuously re-circulated inside a Fe 3+ / Fe 2+ loop. As a result Co(III) is solubilized in the presence of Fe 2+ ions in concentrations well below the stoichiometric requirement. The ore has been initially subjected to acid pre-leaching in order to guarantee that the available Co (II) has been entirely removed. Two technological parameters have been studied to show influence on the degree of cobalt leaching: concentration of ferric iron in the inoculum and the presence of bacteria. The bacterial role could be mainly viewed in supplying ferric ions in the system which chemically react with the pyrite to generate ferrous ions used as Co(III) reducing agent. Co(III) dissolution has been less efficient when the concentration of total iron in the system was low, but also when microorganisms were absent. SEM observations on leached heterogenite have evidenced bacterial attack on the mineral; however the precise role of bacterial presence on cobalt (III) leaching is still to be elucidated.INTRODUCTIONCobalt accompanies quite often copper in secondary oxidized ore deposits (Rumbu, 2013). In such associations cobalt is found both as CoII+ as well as CoIII+ (Deliens, 1974). In contrast to cobalt (III), cobalt (II) is leached relatively easy in sulphuric acid solutions. Cobalt (III) when present in mineral form belongs to the heterogenite mineral group with a simplified chemical formulae Co2O3.H2O or CoOOH. "This paper refers to a new process for the full recovery (above 98%) of zinc and other valuable metals (Pb, Ag, Au) accompanying zinc in its concentrates while iron is separated as a marketable product free of any harmful impurities and suitable for sale to the cement industry. The process has been especially designed to achieve the following goals: maximizing the recovery of zinc and those valuable metals that are present in most zinc concentrates (lead, silver, gold); allowing the recovery of other valuable metals such as indium or germanium that could be present in some zinc concentrates; avoiding or minimizing the need for residue disposal in safe areas as it is the common practice nowadays in the zinc industry. Finally, the process achieves the previously related goals at a competitive cost, in line with the existing more efficient operations while using conventional equipment working under atmospheric conditions. The new process can be easily implemented in those smelters using the jarosite or goethite processes as well as in those smelters using direct leaching as a part of the processing facilities. A study has already been conducted on the use of jarosite in the cement manufacturing process, in the raw mix preparation as well as for a set controller. It shows that use of clean jarosite in the manufacture of ordinary Portland cement can result in improved quality of the clinker. Jarosite showed compatibility to influence the burning characteristics of the cement raw mixes. The presence of SO3 bearing mineral phases such as natrojarosite showed the suitability of clean jarosite for use as a set controller in cement production.INTRODUCTION Iron is by far the most abundant impurity accompanying zinc in its concentrates, and consequently, iron residue disposal is a major environmental concern for many zinc smelters in the world. This is especially true during the last 30 years when environmental restrictions became more and more strict. Much research work has been carried out during the last 30 years to try to find a solution for this important issue, but with little success. Only the jarofix process represents a partial solution to this problem as jarofix is stored nearby the smelters with certain limitations as a non-contaminant residue. However, it does not avoid the need to dispose of an important amount of residues every year, representing an environmental liability. Meanwhile, the number of countries limiting or banning the disposal of iron residues generated by the zinc smelters is growing, so that the solution to this problem is becoming an urgent matter right now. At the same time, the lack of appropriate available land for iron disposal is also a major concern in many cases."

"Parameters f or design and development of an emergency hoist system (Fig. I) were submitted to Timberland Equipment Limited of Woodstock, Ontario by the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited.The unit is the first of its kind in Canada. Not only does it comply with the province of Saskatchewan's mining regulations, but has the added advantage of being completely mobile and self-contained.As well as being useful in the mining industry, the mobile hoist unit could be used in other emergency situations such as rescuing people trapped in wells.JustificationRevisions to the Mines Regulations under Section 13 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1977, of the Province of Saskatchewan stipulate as follows:"" Section 410 .04(4) The Mine Employer shall make adequate provision at every mine where any worker is hoisted in a shaft not equipped with a manway to enable an y such worker trapped in a conveyance in the shaft to be rescued . "" It was not possible to equip the shafts at PCS Mining' s Divisions with "" manways"" and therefore an alternative was required.BackgroundThe Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited, a subsidiary of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, operates four potash mines. Of these, three, Cory, Rocanville and Lanigan Divisions are wholly owned while the fourth, Allan Division, is 40% owned by Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., but managed by PCS Mining. The four underground operations all have a service and production shaft.From 1979 to 1981 the PCS Mining Division, along with Central Canada Potash, were developing an idea to use the existing ground-mounted timberland hoist at Lanigan as an emergency hoist. This hoist was used in the past for rope-up work at both Rocanville and Lanigan and other potash mine s. The Department of Labour at this time had concerns about the time it would take to load, t ran sport and re-install the hoist on a foundation when needed for an emergency. Weight and size made this particular unit very cumbersome for transporting.In addition, the speed at which this hoist operates is too slow for rescue work. When the Department of Labour expressed concern that this unit would be unsuitable for these rea sons, a search for a suitable unit was initiated.The project responsibility for procuring an emergency hoist for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited was assigned to the author, a shaft/ hoist specialist a t PCS Mining."

A clarification technology used by municipalities to produce high-quality drinking water, polish sewage treatment plant effluent and handle combined sewer overflows has recently found new applications in the mines and iron and steel industry. This patented process, known as ACTIFLO®, utilizes microsand in a ballasted flocculation process to enhance the settling characteristics of suspended solids, increasing the efficiency sufficiently to achieve a clarifier footprint that is smaller than the one of a conventional clarifier. ACTIFLO® rise rates vary from 40 to 170 m/h with a total system hydraulic retention time of about 10 minutes. The result is a clarification system so compact that a full-scale system can operate as a trailer-mounted unit for temporary applications or as a permanent installation in facilities with space limitations. This paper explains the process and presents case studies in which this innovative technology was used at mines and steelmaking facilities to meet compliance requirements.

"Centrifuge modelling of earth structures is a well-proven technique for evaluating the performance of prototype structures using physical models. The applications of this technique have increased dramatically during the last decade such that even the modelling of dynamic responses in structures has been accomplished.This paper presents the first model test results used to design a mine backfill. The models were tested using a 3 m radius 30 g-tonne geotechnical centrifuge which was constructed at Queen's University specifically for model studies on mine backfill stability and subsidence. The models represent the first production blast-hole stope to be mined at Westmin Resources Ltd. 's H. ~ Mine on Vancouver Island. This paper includes photographs of:model failures in the centrifuge and correlations of model test results with analyses based on unconfined and triaxial test data.IntroductionDuring the feasibility study and development stages for the H.W. Mine, Westmin Resources Ltd. conducted a comprehensive rock mechanics and backfill engineering program. The results of these studies indicated the need for assurance of backfill stability during pillar recovery on the initial blast-hole mining block. The cemented tailings backfill had to be free standing for heights up to 25 m and the potential for surcharge loading from a weak hanging wall zone, the potential for fill block sliding down-dip and the potential for seismic loading had to be considered in the design of the fill strength. The basic questions to be answered were: what cement content is required and will the resulting backfill costs be economic relative to the proposed mining method and sequence? Figure I shows a typical cross-section through the first mining block . The up-dip stope is to be mined first and backfilled with cemented tailings . The down-dip stope would then be mined and filled. Depending on ground conditions encountered, the complete intervening pillar could be recovered and the void backfilled with uncemented tailings or it could be recovered in small sections by exposing limited back and wall areas, backfilling with waste rock and I or cemented tailings . This latter method is commonly referred to as the Avoca method"

"Bricks made from local Paleozoic shales, and floor and wall tiles made from imported clays, both established record production volumes in 1985 and are the strongest segments of Ontario's clay products industries. However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario's clay products industries, completed in 1986. IntroductionFor some years now, Ontario's clay products industries have been unspectacular in their attempt to cope with the recent recession and the impact of alternative materials. But a strong demand for bricks in recent years has done much to dispel the gloom. Bricks, drainage tiles, sewer pipes, flue liners, structural and partition tiles, and flower pots have been commonly referred to as ""heavy"" clay products, and they have been based largely on local clays and shales. To this list might be added expanded aggregate and mineral wool. Clay refractories, sanitary ware, electrical porcelain, art pottery, and floor and wall tiles are not considered heavy clay products, and are commonly made from a variety of ceramic materials, many of which are imported.Production facilities for heavy clay products often began in Ontario as small family enterprises, using whatever clay was available locally to supply the local market with building bricks and other clay products needed for construction. Improved road systems increased the market range for these plant s, and new technology and industry standards resulted in gradual upgrading and consolidation of them as traced in Table I"

"Construction of the first stage of the tailings disposal facility for the Montana Tunnels Project was completed in October 1986. The project is located 37 km south of Helena, Montana, and involves mining of42 million tons of weathered diatreme are at a rate or 13 500 tpd to produce a gold/silver dore, as well as lead and zinc concentrates. The tailings disposal facility for the project includes a fully drained tailings impoundment for storage of the tailings solids, and a process waterpond for storage of all decanted water prior to recyling to the mill. The over-all facility is designed to achieve the basic objectives ofminimizing seepage to the environment in the short- and longterm, and achieving a fully drained stable tailings mass suitable for immediate reclamation on completion of mining. Specific features of the design include a soil bentonite seal and drainage system within the tailings basin, a free draining embankment with a design flow-through capacity of 4000 US gpm and an ultimate height of 230 ft (70 m), and a soil bentonite lined make-up water pond with a capacity of 420 acre-feet (530 000 m'). The tailings will be discharged in a rotational sequence through multiple spigot offtakes to achieve a thin-layer low energy laminar flow. This 'sub-aerial' deposition results in higher stored densities and maximizes liquid-solid separation on the tailings beaches. The over-all design played a major role in the successful permitting of the project, and was significantly cheaper than a conventional wet disposal system, with overall unit costs for tailings disposal of less than US$0.36 per ton.This paper outlines the site characteristics and the tailings material properties and their influence on the design. Extensive use was made of naturally occurring free draining materials as well as bentonite modified soil liners within the tailings basin, embankment and retention ponds. General construction procedures for the various components are described, as well as on-going construction requirements utilizing materials from the open pit. Finally, the over-all costs and unit costs for tailings disposal are presented."

The increase in the number of higher and larger buildings is expected to require the buildings' outer wall maintenance process, which includes cleaning, painting and monitoring, still depends on manpower. In this study, we proposed the robotic building maintenance system and aimed to reduce the jerk effect through the motion control of the system, improve the performance of the maintenance task, and ensure longer life and safety by improving the stability of the building structure and robot system. Through the results of the motion control and field-test with the proposed system, in specific, horizontal sliding module (HSM) showed that the jerk oriented by impact force was significantly reduced, feasibility of the proposed method was verified, and the robotic challenges were explored.

"T.L. Leaching ProcessCommercial PerformanceSociedad Minera Pudahuel Ltda. (SMP) has been innovating in the copper producing field with the commercial application of the Thin Layer (T .L.) leaching process in its two operating division s: Lo Aguirre and La Cascada. Since November 1980, SMP' s Lo Aguirre Division has been producing high-purity copper cathodes at a nominal rate of about 16,500 metric tonnes / year, by mean s of the new route of T.L. leaching, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (TLlSX/EW). This has been the first commercial application on T .L. technology in the world, and the only commercial application in Chile for solvent extraction and electrowinning.By mid -1980, SMP acquired Sagasca Mining Co., renaming it as La Cascad a Division. The existing vat leaching facilities were modified to apply T.L. in the same old vats. The existing scrap iron cementation recovery circuit was kept running for the continuing production of copper precipitates. The modifications in the leaching circuit allowed shorter treatment cycles with a lower acid consumption and consequently, copper product ion increased from a previous historical high of 12,000-13,000 metric tonnes /year to a new level of about 22,000 metric tonnes/ year . These changes have been in operation since March 1981.T.L. Leaching commercial performance, both at Lo Aguirre (TL / SX /EW) and at La Cascada (TL/cementation), has been presented in several recent publications. Real operating parameters and process requirement s were reviewed in detail. A breakdown for TL / SX/ EW economics was also published based on Lo Aguirre' s performance during 1982(41."

"The historical transformations in fire -resistant conveyor belt compositions in the past 20 years have been influenced by factors of material cost, changing flame and burn test requirements, material replacements, adhesion and oil resistance considerations, increased responsibility and legal liability. Specifically, this has resulted in a swing from neoprene-cotton belts to S.B.R. blends and synthetic fibre carcasses, and tighter quality control and documentation of test data.Flame dynamics are discussed and the function and performance of the multiple types of flame-resistant additives in the flame front are presented. Specific flame and burn test requirements are described. The belt manufacturers' requirements and criteria in selecting the types of flame-resistant additives are presented.The author will describe the composition of the types of flame-resistant compounds used in a practical production, the belts that are available on today's mark et and future developments in requirements that may further transform the composition of fire-resistant belts.IntroductionThe historical transformations of conveyor belt compositions in the past two decades have been based on factors common to those leading to changes in man y organic compositional products. These factors are material cost, new materials, the customer' s changing requirements, government regulation s and increased manufacturer' s liability.As a basis for understanding the product, I will provide a brief breakdown of the conveyor belt composite. Figure 1 represents a cross section of a typical belt. A skim rubber coats each fabric ply of the belt carcass and is of a different rubber composition than the outside layer of rubber which forms the cover. This outside cover layer is designed to protect the belt from environmental factors such as heat, oil and abrasion, and other factors involved in the service condition s under which the belt will operate. In the case of fire-retardant belt s, both the skim coat encapsulating the fabric plies and the outer cover must contain sufficient fire retardancy to overcome the contribution to burning of the decomosition products of the fabric."

Ni-20Cr metallic coating was deposited on a Ni-based Superalloy (3Fe-19.5Cr¬0.3Ti-Balance Ni) by a shrouded plasma spray process; NiCrA1Y was used as a bond coat. Erosion studies were conducted on uncoated and plasma-spray coated superalloy specimens using an air-jet erosion test rig at a velocity of 40 m/s and impingement angles of 30° and 90°. The coating has been characterized for porosity, microhardness and microstructure and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). An electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA) was used to obtain X-ray elemental mappings of the coating along the cross-section. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDAX attachment was used to analyze the eroded surfaces.

"The flotation of fine minerals less than 10 µm in size is an age old challenge spanning both the precious metal and industrial mineral sectors across a range of commodities. This problem has been brought into sharper focus by the emergence of the practice of fine grinding of flotation feed to effect better liberation of the targeted minerals. However, the ability of conventional flotation cells to effectively float the liberated fines remains questionable. In order to overcome this problem, Gold Ore postulates the “Bringing the Mountain to Mohamed” hypothesis which comprises the steps of gas nucleation on particle surfaces, aggregation of particles and levitation of aggregates. Testing of this hypothesis at Mintek, South Africa, showed a ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor coupled with a projected recovery improvement of ~4 % for the Mach Reactor case coupled with a final concentrate grade of ~2 times that of conventional flotation. These fundamentals were then extrapolated to plant scale with Mach Reactors installed on the flotation feed at Platmin’s Tailings Scavenger Plant (TSP) with the objective of scavenging the fine minerals lost to tailings by the main plant. This paper details the theory, pilot plant results as well as key aspects of the full scale plant design supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning. This game changing application is regarded as being pivotal to future flotation plant design whilst providing the technology leverage required for the survival of mineral operations in an economically unfriendly environment.INTRODUCTION - THE CONUNDRUM OF FINE PARTICLE FLOTATION“If the mountain won't come to Mohamed then Mohamed must go to the mountain” is an age old saying written into the book of proverbs in 1670. "Hydrometallurgy of copper ores typically involve acid leaching followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). EW is the final purification stage in which a voltage is applied across two electrodes causing the copper ions to reduce and deposit on the cathode. Applied voltages are near 2 volts with current densities around 300 amps/m2. In this study, research was undertaken to decrease the energy consumed in the EW process. To do this, various cell designs were constructed and tested in which a membrane was used to separate the cathode and anode compartments with concentrated solution from SX serving as catholyte and raffinate from SX serving as anolyte. Therefore, copper in the concentrated solution would be deposited on the cathode while ferrous in the raffinate would be oxidized to ferric at the anode. Because it is assumed that ferric acid leaching is used, resulting ferric would be recycled to the leaching process. A positive side effect of the envisioned process would be the elimination of oxygen evolution at the anode and thus the prevention of acid-misting. After a cell design was selected, it was used to test a number of variables: flowrate, concentration, temperature, ion-exchange membrane, and applied voltage. Following experiments in which variable ranges were determined, statistical modeling was conducted using STATEASE software. Optimal results indicate the voltage can be decreased to 1.5-1.7 volts with current densities of 300-400 amps/m2. Significant reduction in the energy consumption was accomplished by reducing the applied voltage. Furthermore, current efficiencies and copper production rates was increased by application of the membrane.INTRODUCTIONLeaching of copper ores is achieved using mostly sulfuric acid. "The presence of excessive water in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit initiated studies into the ground-water conditions that might be expected in mining the Granite Lake and Pollyanna pits. Hydrologic information obtained from a pump test program in 1974 indicated that deep-well dewatering could be successfully achieved. In 1976, a deep-well dewatering system consisting of eight wells was installed on the periphery of the Pollyanna pit . it has been responsible for a significant decrease in mining costs.This paper presents a brief summary of the engineering principles involved in the design of the Gibraltar dewatering system and the problems encountered in the installation and operation of deep-well pumps. IntroductionGibraltar Mines is an open-pit copper-molybdenite mine located approximately 230 air miles north of Vancouver in the central interior of British Columbia (Fig. I). The property consists of three separate major orebodies; Gibraltar East, Granite Lake and Pollyanna (Fig. 2). Mining commenced during the summer of 1971, in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit. The Granite Lake Stage 1 pit was mined from mid 1974 to mid 1976. The Pollyanna Stage 1 pit is currently being mined and the Gibraltar East Stage 2 is being developed for production. This report is intended as an outline of the studies and tests leading up to and including the installation of the Pollyanna pit dewatering system, the problems encountered and the results obtained.GeneralIn the summer of 1973, mining in the Gibraltar East pit progressed below ""daylight"" on the down-hill side and ground water very quickly became a costly nuisance in the day-to-day mining operations. Mining, maintenance and blasting costs reflected these problems. Concern was also voiced about adverse effects of ground water on pit wall stability. This concern later became a reality in the Gibraltar East and Granite Lake pits. A study was initiated to investigate various methods and costs of dewatering the pit areas. The study included in-pit sumps, deep peripheral wells and a drainage gallery system located below the pits."

"It is often reported that the concept of single-plane-fracture is not sufficient to account for the productivity from shale gas/oil wells. Many researchers introduce the concept of the stimulated reservoir volume to describe observed production behaviour. However, the characteristics of the stimulated reservoir volume are not well understood. In this study, to investigate the characteristics of fractures and surrounding region induced by the hydraulic fracturing, a devised hydraulic fracturing experiment was conducted using the cylindrical shale specimens in the laboratory.Two resins were prepared as the fracturing fluid for the experiments: cyanoacrylate, an instant glue, mixed with a fluorescent paint (resin A), and methyl metaacrylate, a thermosetting acrylic resin, mixed with a fluorescent paint (resin B). These resins were able to fix within the specimen after fracturing. This is because the present study aimed to only detect fractures induced by hydraulic fracturing. Cut sections of the specimens were observed under ultraviolet light irradiation. It is expected that the hydraulically induced fractures and the surrounding regions will be detected because the induced fractures filled with the resin should emit light, while the other parts will not.The specimens, which were collected from the Kushiro Coal Mine in Hokkaido, Japan at the depth around 275 m, were roughly 85 mm in diameter, 170 mm in length, and cored normal to the sedimentary planes. An injection hole with a 10-mm diameter was drilled onto the center of the specimen parallel to the sedimentary plane to simulate hydraulic fracturing in shale gas development. The experiment was conducted under a uniaxial loading condition of 3 MPa and the fracturing fluid was injected into the sealed injection hole at a constant flow rate using a syringe pump.After the fracturing experiment, the resins were fixed in the specimens and then the cut sections were observed under ultraviolet light irradiation. As a result, the hydraulically induced fractures, which were filled with the resin, are clearly observed. Detailed microscopic observations show that the main fractures are tortuous and are accompanied by many thinner ramified fractures. Additionally, fractured regions where the resin penetrates significantly are observed around the main fractures in the specimens fractured by the resin B. These induced fractures and fractured regions are considered to be the stimulated region in which permeability is improved. The necessity of estimation on the features of fracture tortuosity and ramified fractures is indicated for more accurate understanding of the well production and the stimulated reservoir volume."
