The paper addresses some geotechnical issues related to the construction of the Deriner dam and HEPP. Design considerations and rock stabilization measures are presented for the excavations which took place in a highly fractured and weathered rock mass prevailing on site. Particularly, the shallow excavations for the overflow spillways tunnels are discussed. These present huge openings that are 12 m wide and 18 m high in portal areas, with an overburden of approximately 20 m, for which numerical finite element analysis and structural discontinuity analysis have been performed to ensure safe excavation process and future operation.

This naturally makes the water well a precious possession that needsto be protected.This paper describes the challenges that TransAlta Utilities Corporation faced and how it responded to the concern of residents that open pit coal mining would affect their water well supplies.BackgroundWells have a certain mystique. Tum on the silver tap and water flows at your command without you knowing how it got there and whether it will continue to flow.Each well is different and has a story to tell. Some wells have a lot of history and are described fondly and with pride (""Grandad built this place 50 years ago and she hasn't failed us yet""). Some are passed on from father to son, some are part of the pride of good farming, some wells are famous for tapping that huge underground stream or have been mysteriously witched or have been part of a rip-off by an unscrupulous well driller. Some have to be babied so that the cows can be watered, the children can have showers and the dishes can be done. All wells represent a significant $5,000 to $10,000 investment and is a key to making a living or sustaining a reasonable lifestyle.Most wells continue to provide water faithfully - until there is a problem. For those people living next to a mine, there is the additional concern that mining has or will affect their water well supplies. Water well problems reported to the mining company have to be dealt with promptly and responsibly. The mining company's groundwater specialist must gain the trust and confidence of well owners living in the area ."

"Abstract - The mainland Aysén region of Chilean Patagonia (44°15' - 47°30'S) is a representative segment of the South American active continental margin, distinct with respect to northern and central Chile. Mineralization consists mainly of polymetallic deposits, with important Zn-Pb mines and more recently discovered Au-Ag deposits, unlike the central Andes, which are dominated by Cu mineralization. On a regional scale, rocks may be grouped in four main map units: 1) the Paleozoic metamorphic basement; 2) upper Jurassic-Cretaceous calc-alkaline volcanic and marine sedimentary rocks; 3) the Patagonian batholith, and 4) upper Cretaceous to Miocene basalts and marine and continental sedimentary rocks. The upper Jurassic-Cretaceous rocks and the Patagonian batholith formed in a volcanic arc and back-arc setting superimposed on the Paleozoic metamorphic basement.Based on geographic location and geologic and tectonic setting, ore deposits in this region are assigned to three groups, from south to north: El Faldeo, Fachinal, and El Toqui. The El Faldeo group (south of 47°05'S) includes upper Jurassic Zn-Pb skarn and associated polymetallic massive sulfide vein deposits locally overprinted by Au-rich epithermal mineralization, hosted by volcanic and sedimentary rocks and/or by rocks of the metamorphic basement. The Fachinal group (46°05' - 47°05'S) consists of volcanic-hosted lower Cretaceous Au-Ag epithermal deposits, except for the Mina Silva and Manto Rosillo deposits, which are metamorphic basement-hosted Zn-Pb skarns. The El Toqui group (44°30' - 46°05'S) comprises lower Cretaceous Au-rich Zn-Pb skarns and associated polymetallic veins, as well as Au-Ag-rich epithermal deposits, hosted by volcanic, intrusive, and marine sedimentary rocks. Galena lead isotopic signatures for each deposit group indicate a decreasingly radiogenic trend from south to north, suggesting different lead sources or differences among underlying crust. Three metallogenic provinces and two metallogenic epochs are proposed for the Aysén region: the El Faldeo metallogenic province of Late Jurassic age; and the Fachinal and El Toqui provinces of Early Cretaceous age. Résumé - La partie continentale de la région d’Aysen (Patagonie chilienne, 44°15' - 47°30'S), est unsegment représentatif de la marge continentale active d’Amérique du sud, différent des segments du nordet du centre du Chili. La minéralisation, qui consiste essentiellement en des dépôts polymétalliques, avec d’importantes mines de Pb-Zn, et des dépôts d’Au-Ag récemment découverts, différe de celle des Andes centrales où domine la minéralisation cuprifère. A l’échelle régionale, les roches peuvent être regroupées en quatre unités cartographiques principales : 1) le socle métamorphique paléozoïque, 2) les roches volcaniques calco-alcalines et les sédiments marins du Jurassique supérieur-Crétacé, 3) le batholite patagonien, et 4) les sédiments marins et continentaux ainsi que les basaltes du Crétacé supérieur-Miocène. Les roches du Jurassique supérieur-Crétacé et le batholite patagonien, formés dans un contexte d’arc volcanique et d’arrière-arc se superposent au socle métamorphique paléozoïque.Fondé sur la localisation géographique ainsi que sur le cadre tectonique et géologique, les dépôts de minerais de cette région se répartissent en trois groupes, du sud au nord, El Faldeo, Fachinal et El Toqui. Electronic Product and Process Management [EPPM] systems provide the capability to establish and map information flow between different parties in a construction project as well as model project processes. Much of the information relating to processes and their structure, the actors that operate them, and the data associated with each instance of a process is encapsulated within workflows. The wealth of information contained in an EPPM system can be exploited to extract knowledge that can provide significant cost benefits to construction companies. Workflows provide an ideal medium for the capture of knowledge over the course of a project lifecycle. We demonstrate how this knowledge may then be used to analyze workflows and determine metrics that establish the suitability of workflows to construction processes. We present a conceptual approach to measure the performance of a workflow, its constituent components and evolution, which may be used to lay the foundation for establishing paragon workflows suited to classes of construction activities.

Prior to installation of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) a series of laboratory tests were carried out to determine the design parameters and also determine key performance indicators (KPIs) for the industrial unit. The design parameters derived from the lab test work were then scaled up to estimate the industrial capacity of the HPGRs to be installed. These parameters include specific power draw, specific throughput, and specific force, rolls speed, product size distribution and wear rate of the rolls. This paper compares the performance of the scale-up procedure against the installed industrial size HPGR. Overall, the specific throughput of the industrial size HPGR is higher by a minimum of 30% compared to the expected scale-up value. As a result of the high specific throughput, the specific power draw and grind sizes are below the scale-up expectations in the commercial application. The impact of these factors also contribute to a lower than expected wear rate on the industrial rolls. Installed rolls achieved a service life in excess of 18,500 hours relative to the target of 6,850 hours predicted from the laboratory testing.

Conveyor belts installed in an underground mine can be a potential source of a major fire, thus the need for fife-retardant belting. A Canadian Standard, CAN/CSA-M422-M87, incorporating a small-scale flame test, a drum-friction test, a flame propagation test and an electrical surface-resistance test, has been developed to meet the varied needs of the mining industry. It is recommended that mines use Types A and B belting described in that Standard, because they will have passed the large-scale flame propagation test, rather than Type C, which does not require that test. Belting that has been approved by the U.S.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) may be much less fire-retardant than any Canadian approved belting.

"This paper summarizes structural repairs carried out on a marine wharf consisting of six 13.7 m by 13.7 m reinforced concrete cribs linked together by five 14.6 m long beam spans. As a result of problems during original construction and twenty years exposure to severe weather conditions, the deck support system between the cribs required major restoration work. In particular, some of the beam seats under the crane rail supports had marginal bearing area to support the structural loads. Faced with closure order for the wharf which is required to bring in raw materials to the plant and a long outage to make repairs as stipulated by Ports Canada (owners of the structure) alternate means of making the required repair were examined.The method chosen allowed the work to be done much more quickly, at lower cost, without taking the wharf completely out of service. The badly deteriorated seats were rebuilt using epoxy grout, tapered sole plates and a positioning jig."

Over the past three years, Ring of Fire chromite ores have been tested extensively at both the bench scale and pilot scale at XPS Consulting and Testwork Services. Following bench scale testwork, two smelting campaigns were completed using a 300 kW DC arc furnace on different chromite deposits from the Ring of Fire. A ChemSheet model was developed to aid in the design and optimization of the recipes, and its predictions were confirmed with both the bench scale and pilot scale tests. A total of 7.5 tonnes of chromite ore was smelted at XPS. The results of the testwork demonstrate excellent reducibility for the ores tested with good reduction kinetics when compared with South African chromites.

This paper presents an evaluation of underground-to-surface haulage options for a relatively large deposit. Specifically, it presents a recommended haulage option to provide the greatest value to the Project. Options considered included conventional truck, trolley-truck, conveying and shaft hoisting. The work was done at the level of a preliminary assessment as input to an internal pre-feasibility study. The Base Case for the analysis in this study was a Long Hole Open Stoping option (LHOS) using conventional truck haulage. Two scenarios were considered for the evaluation and included: 1. The current resource to ~700 m depth. 2. An expanded resource to ~825 m depth. The haulage options evaluated included three trucking options, three conveyor options and two shaft options. The paper presents the results from evaluating these options within the two mining scenarios using a Discounted Project Cost (DPC) comparison. Recommendations are made for the options that will provide the greatest overall value to the project.

In this paper, we present a computer-vision approach developed for wall-thickness measurements of corroded pipes inspected by double-wall radiography. The main objective of the work is to optimize data collection and film interpretation using computerized image analysis. To date, the system is able to identify the inner and outer contours of a pipe and perform wall thickness measurements at each pixel of a radiograph. This will be presented by analysing pipes having different dimensions. Another important feature of the system concerns the algorithms' adaptability to pipe wall texture. In other words, image analysis is automatically refined around rough or corroded areas. This allows more precise thickness measurements and shape identification in critical sections as will be demonstrated with examples. Finally a brief overview of results exploitation will be given and compared with human interpretation. It will show the reliability of automated image analysis and the many possibilities offered by complete output analysis.

SIDBEC commenced detailed planning of major capital expenditures to install integrated steelmaking facilities in 1969. Today, less than IO years later, SIDBEC and its subsidiaries have completed major mining, concentrating, pelletizing, direct reduction ? electric furnace steelmaking and continuous casting plants. The total cost of these projects was almost 1 billion dollars. The philosophy behind the project planning and the evolution of management control are explained. These extensive projects were undertaken during a period of exceptional inflation and a disturbed labour climate, but were nevertheless completed with only modest overruns, with good control of timetables and with exceptionally good start-up performance. Project planning, relations with consulting engineers, introduction of new technology, purchasing and field management and cost control are discussed.

Discrete event simulation provides a computational framework in which the use of smelting equipment can be analyzed and optimized, leading to the development of alternative modes of operation. Much of the complexity of copper and nickel smelters is centered on the converter aisle. These converters operate in parallel, produce batches, and set the tempo for the downstream operations. In practice, smelter staff schedule daily operations to coordinate the smelting furnaces and converters with downstream operations. Thus, a realistic simulation of smelter operations, over hundreds of days, should incorporate converter scheduling algorithms as presented in this paper.

Arsenic levels in metal concentrates are increasing as mining companies turn to developing low grade and complex ores. When arsenic bearing minerals are smelted, arsenic deports as gases which must be neutralized by a scrubber system. The resulting scrubber effluent is high in dissolved arsenic and requires treatment before the wastewater can be discharged or re-used. Conventional arsenic removal relies on lime addition followed by calcium arsenate formation and precipitation as hydroxides. As an alternative, arsenic removal with sulphide precipitation is receiving more attention due to potential advantages of the technology. Process streams high in arsenic often contain concentrations of dissolved metals that may be selectively recovered during sulphidization, producing a product that can be reprocessed and reducing waste generation. This paper will review laboratory testing completed for arsenic removal through sulphide addition and precipitation of arsenic (III) sulphide in combination with metals recovery to offset arsenic removal costs.

Despite this amendment, though, the important successor rules will continue to be relatively complex.IntroductionThe February 18, 1987, Federal Budget papers propose an income tax amendment whereby the so-called ""successor corporation"" rules would be revised by removing the present provision which limits the application of these rules to a maximum of two ""successions"". The successor corporation rules represent one of the most complicated sets of rules in the Income Tax Act. This month, Tax Notes seeks to explain these rules and the proposed amendment in simplified terms.Basically, the successor rules provide a mechanism for transferring unused exploration and development expenses from one taxpayer to another , in specified circumstances. The aforementioned limitation of two successions refers to the rule which allows a maximum of two such transfers with respect to any particular pool of deductions."
