"Comparative surface analysis of floated and rejected free gold grains from a number of full scale benefication plants and from pilot plant testwork, has shown silver (the most common impurity in gold) and sulphur invariably in greater concentration on floated gold grains, implying that they assisted gold flotation (gold activators). Collector loading measurements on individual gold grains from concentrates of staged rougher flotation tests on a cyclone U/F product of a pyritic gold ore, revealed first progressively lower concentrations of the collector monomer on gold from each follow-up concentrate and secondly a direct proportionality between the surface concentration of silver and the collector monomer. These two observations leave no doubt that silver activates gold and that collector monomers play a significant, previously not fully recognized role in gold flotation.INTRODUCTIONGold to some degree is naturally floatable in industrial systems, which means that it can be recovered without collector addition (Marsden and House, 1992). This is due to the adsorption of hydrocarbons and deposition of sulphur, which are dependent on the metallic properties of gold, particularly its high electrical conductivity, which allows surface electrochemical reactions to occur catalytically and selectively. Cyclic voltammetry has shown that gold can be rendered hydrophobic by deposition of a surface layer of sulphur (Sº) from S2- and HS- solutions (Walker et al., 1984). Twenty monolayers of sulphur were required to produce a hydrophobic gold surface.However, no sulphide flotation plant relies solely on the natural floatability of gold for its recovery. Gold hydrophobicity is enhanced by the addition of flotation collectors such as xanthates (X), dithiophosphates (DTP), dithiophosphinates (DTPI), mercaptobenzothiolates (MBC) etc., as used in sulphide mineral flotation (Dekok, 1973: Adams et al., 1986). The mechanism invoked in enhancing the hydrophobicity of pure gold with the aforementioned four groups of collectors is similar to that of pyrite, whereby collector anions are oxidized at the gold surface to form dimers (Groot, 1987; Marsden and House, 1992; Basilio et al., 1992) As an example, xanthate ions are oxidized at the gold surface to form the neutral dimer dixanthogen (X2):"

Excessive residual stress in Al engine blocks may result in cylinder distortion which reduces engine operating efficiency. As such, neutron diffraction was used to measure residual strain along the Fe liners and Al, in the hoop, radial and axial orientations with respect to the cylinder axis, at the cylinder interbore region. Residual stresses were subsequently calculated using generalized Hooke's law and related to the microstructure along the cylinder bridge. The results suggest that the residual stresses in the Al interbore region are tensile and increased with depth in the axial direction of the cylinder. The increase in residual stress at the bottom of the cylinder coincides with a finer and more uniform microstructure in this region of the cylinder. The refinement in microstructure at the bottom of the cylinder likely increased alloy strength, thereby decreasing this section's susceptibility to distortion. This study successfully quantified the residual stress profiles in a heat treated engine block and related the stress profiles to an as-cast engine block.

"The milling of sulphide ores inherently generates “thiosalts”, a series of partially oxidized sulphur oxyanions (S2O3 2-, S3O6 2-, S4O6 2- etc.), which make control of effluent treatment systems difficult because their natural oxidation produces acid with the potential to lower the pH within the treatment system and/or receiving environment.At the Xstrata Copper Kidd Metallurgical Site, thiosalt oxidation in the Tailings Management Area continues after buffer storage Ponds A and C where lime is added to precipitate metals and elevate the pH to within the required range for discharge. If the additional acidity generated during the continued process of thiosalt oxidation is not neutralized there is a risk that the final effluent will be non-compliant with regulated standards.To mitigate this risk, in 2007 a full scale pilot trial was conducted with hydrogen peroxide in order to force the complete oxidation of thiosalts prior to the lime treatment stations. This method of chemical oxidation had been shown to be effective at Xstrata Zinc’s Brunswick Mine. The pilot results indicated that a maximum of 50% of the stoichiometric quantity of hydrogen peroxide is required to reduce the thiosalt concentration in the No. 2 thickener overflow stream (feed to buffer storage Ponds A and C) to less than detection (10 mg/L); however, treatment was only effective in the presence of a 20 mg/L iron (Fe) catalyst. Since the hydrogen peroxide addition point at the No. 2 tailings thickener overflow typically contains <1 mg/L total Fe, a second reagent, ferric sulphate, was used to increase the total Fe concentration to the required level. So far, most social performance monitoring systems have not gone beyond listing the impacts on various stakeholders. Executives have had to rely on intuition to devise interventions that would improve the impacts. This paper describes a survey process, known as the Stakeholder 360 (S360), which eliminates much of the guesswork. The paper reviews key studies showing that raising the levels of communication, trust, and common vision among stakeholders leads to the acquisition of the resources needed to improve the socio-economic situation. Therefore, the Stakeholder 360 measures the levels of these three factors in the relationships between a company and its stakeholders, and among the stakeholders themselves. In a validation study at a gold mine in rural Papua New Guinea, the S360 produced a socio-political ?roadmap? that showed management and stakeholders alike which relationships need more communication, trust, or common goals/vision. Management used the findings to create alliances that helped the government move forward on a regulatory regime for the mine closure. The community used the findings to focus its planning for life after the closure. An S360 survey conducted six months later revealed a decline in dependence on the mine and an overall increase in levels of mutual understanding.

"Research has shown that broken rock on conveyor transport systems can contribute upwards of 50% towards the overall heat load in underground mines. However, few studies have made significant efforts to predict the temperature distribution of the ore and air simultaneously, which can help implement heat management strategies. The present investigation explores a transient, analytical heat transfer model to track ore-pile temperature distributions, along conveyor systems in an example underground mine. Production rate, ambient conditions, ore pile thickness and belt velocity are adjusted to evaluate the effect on dry and wet bulb temperatures.INTRODUCTIONWith an ever increasing demand on Earth’s resources due to a multitude of factors like population growth and step changes in technology, pressure on the mining industry to bring out more ore with improved margins is a persistent challenge. Typically, high-volume producing mining methods (i.e., exceeding 5000 tons per day (tpd)) such as sublevel and block caving, room and pillar, and longwall shall utilize belt conveyors instead of trucks as the primary haulage method to surface to save on operational costs (de la Vergne, 2014). However, studies have shown that when such material transport systems are installed at mine depths with virgin rock temperatures (VRT) above 40oC, the heat dissipated by the conveyed ore can account for over 50% of the underground heat-load (Pareja, 2000; Bluhm, Jones, Moreby, & von Glehn, 2012; van den Berg, Moreby, & Kok, 2015).Unlike other types of heat sources encountered in underground mines, such as diesel machines, strata, electrical devices, and autocompression, heat transfer by conveyed broken rock is much more difficult to estimate. The seminal work of McPherson (1993) states that broken rock heat transfer is a function of its surface area, and the air’s psychrometric condition. It is additionally a function of the VRT, its specific heat, production rate, heat transfer coefficient and the residence time (Bossard, 1997; Ross, Tuck, Stokes, & Lowndes, 1997). Consequently, few studies have attempted to analytically quantify the significance of ore heat flow."

One of the most prospective undeveloped greenstone belts in Canada, the Hope Bay greenstone belt extends over 80km in a north-south direction and is between 7 and 20km wide. The belt lies on the arctic coast and comprises mafic meta-volcanic and meta-sedimentary rocks that are bounded by Archean granite intrusives and gneisses. The greenstone package has been deformed during multiple events and is transected by major northsouth trending shear zones that appear to exert a significant control on the localization of mineralization. The Hope Bay belt contains a number of significant gold deposits hosted in a typical Archean greenstone belt and which occur in several geologic settings, including shear-hosted, lode-style and breccia-associated. Combined, the deposits host a measured and indicated resource of 1.6 million oz of gold averaging 15.7 g/t plus an inferred resource of 2.7 million oz of gold averaging 12.3 g/t. All deposits remain open to expansion. Exploration in the period 2000-2002 by Miramar includes more than 110,000m of drilling to more fully define the nature of the known deposits, while regional exploration has focused on identifying and evaluating new targets. In carrying out its programs, Miramar uses a number of techniques to improve its chances of exploration success. Activity in 2003 includes 43,000m of drilling focused on expanding resources in the Madrid area, testing the Boston deposit at depth and continuing the hunt for more discoveries. Meanwhile Miramar is advancing one of the deposits towards a production decision, based on a low capital, high return development scenario.

"Multi-stage crushing plants, including high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) circuits, require more materials handling equipment than SAG and ball mill circuits. A temptation exists to neglect the energy consumption of materials handling when doing desktop comparisons of HPGR versus SAG milling circuits because estimation of materials handling power requirements can demand significant general arrangement drafting that is not available when performing preliminary scoping or ""desktop"" studies.The largest component of materials handling power is consumed by conveyors when lifting material between stages of crushing, meaning that a simple potential energy model can be used to evaluate conveying specific power consumption. This potential energy consumption for conveying can then be factored to provide overall materials handling specific energy consumption suitable for desktop studies of HPGR and other multi-stage crushing circuits. The technique also permits different crushing circuit flowsheets to be evaluated, at a preliminary level, by simply counting the number of times a conveyor must ""lift"" ore from ground level up to a bin or other equipment mounted up high.INTRODUCTIONTrade-off studies of multi-stage crushing plants involving high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) versus semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuits typically focus on the operating cost savings of crushing plants versus the capital cost savings of SAG mill plants. Very high-level (or desktop) studies of this type do not include a great deal of engineering work, meaning that the details (and costs) of ancillary systems are often not captured when doing the comparisons. The more complicated nature of the multistage crushing plants means there are more ancillary systems than a SAG mill plant, risking a skewed analysis of the operating costs, benefiting the HPGR option.One of the ancillary systems that may be overlooked is the more complicated conveying systems inherent in multi-stage crushing plants. Due to the mass of material being handled in large mining operations, these conveyors become a significant portion of the operating costs. A simple way to estimate the specific energy consumption of conveying systems without requiring engineering drawings and a site layout would allow high-level studies to capture this operating cost."

"In 1991, local prospector C. “Mickey” Clement recovered at least three alluvial diamonds from the Michipicoten River. Two of these stones were sent to the Department of Mineralogy, Royal Ontario Museum, where they were identified as industrial-grade diamonds with weights of 1.05 and 1.13 carats. Both stones were described as frosted and graphiteinclusion riddled.In 1995, prospector Sandor Surmacz and geologist Marcelle Hauseux discovered diamonds in bedrock approximately 20 km north of the Michipicoten River. An 18.1 kg bulk sample of a xenolith-rich lamprophyre, taken from an outcrop at the side of the Trans Canada Highway north of Wawa, yielded 1 macro diamond and 5 micro diamonds. All but one was gem quality (Sage, 2000).Since then, more than 36 occurrences of diamonds in bedrock have been reported in an area approximately 30 km2 in size, centred 20 km north of the town of Wawa. The occurrences are hosted within a sequence of unusual, Archean-aged, heterolithic breccias previously considered to have no economic significance. Ten kimberlite occurrences also have been confirmed in the Michipicoten greenstone belt in the last five years. Two of these kimberlites are diamondiferous.To date, expenditures on property acquisition and diamond exploration in the Wawa are estimated at CDN$120 M.This paper summarizes the geological observations made on these occurrences and describes the relationship between the occurrences and the regional geology."

This paper presents ground control best practices in weak rock environments including the "Unsupported" Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve and awareness pertaining to the potentially detrimental effects of using resin grouted rebar in weak rock masses and the false sense of security that the use of resin grouted rebar may instill. Ground support is almost always used in weak rock environments, though the type of support used can vary widely. The development of the Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve by the addition of 463 case histories of RMR76 values ranging from 25 to 60, has also been calibrated to four different support categories; Category A: Pattern Friction Sets, Category B: Pattern Friction Sets with Spot Bolting of Rebar, Category C: Pattern Friction Sets with Pattern Rebar Bolts and Category D: Cablebolting, Shotcrete, Spiling, Timber Sets or Underhand Cut and Fill. Design of underground man-entry type excavations in North America relies heavily upon empirical analysis. This design requires a higher Factor of Safety than other non-man entry type excavations. A comparison of the calculated ½ span failure Factor of Safety between all the categories is also presented.

"There are a number of challenges involved with the surface analyses of different mineral phases from process streams in a flotation facility. The first of course is to collect samples that are representative of the process and to ensure that they remain in a pristine condition prior to introduction into the instrument. In mineral processing, sample collection from the different streams is done on site and preservation involves simply removing oxygen from the sample by bubbling nitrogen or argon gas through the sample and snap freezing with dry ice.The second challenge in studying the surface chemistry of specific minerals is to find reliable methods of mineral phase recognition. In surface analysis of mineral particles confident mineral selection can be difficult with many multi-metal minerals (e.g. chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite) and with precipitated, adsorbed, reacted and contaminant species in the outermost molecular layers.In this paper we show that principal components analysis (PCA) of ToF-SIMS data provides improvement in phase recognition, particle selection and associated variations in surface species. We will demonstrate, with specific examples, that this technique can be utilized to differentiate surface chemical factors promoting (hydrophobic species) or inhibiting (hydrophilic species) flotation.Species recognition based on the PCA method in a study of Cu transfer between chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite mineral mixture clearly identified a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. A similar ToF-SIMS/PCA based study applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrated extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between the chalcocite and heazlewoodite minerals. The statistical analysis has been able to confirm some mechanisms and deny others proposed to control recovery and selectivity giving more focus on the control factors.The ToF-SIMS PCA statistical analysis has elucidated differences in surface chemistries which illustrate the discriminating depressant action of adherent aluminosilicate (gangue) fine particles and adsorbed ions on the surface of sphalerite grains. In the flotation test concentrates, HIC conditioning resulted in the removal of these gangue fines thereby improving surface collector attachment efficiency, promoting a greater recovery of sphalerite."

London Mining Plc. is developing an iron ore project in Sierra Leone. The Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by others since the 1930?s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the prior operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960?s. Following civil war In Sierra Leone, London Mining obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. There are two ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings from previous operations. Phase 1 will be the mining of the tailings resource with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mtpa. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Phase 2 will include development of the two ore deposits. These deposits are weathered secondary ore and the main primary ore resource. Phase 2 is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production in 2016. Outotec partnered with London Mining on testing efforts to develop the magnetic separation flowsheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa material. This paper explains the flowsheet development process for the weathered and primary ores commencing with sample characterization and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flowsheet configuration is explained, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, clearly demonstrating the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit in iron ore tailings treatment applications.

"Since the idea of processing rock to unlock the valuable minerals inside was put into practice, efforts to improve production began. Methods have been learned that allow for operation in environments and under circumstances where it would not have been possible until now. All existing operations have experienced at least some form of productivity improvement measures. The objective is simple: generate more product of better quality in less time and at lower unit cost. Since the year 2000, various modifications have been made at the Kemess Concentrator in efforts to improve productivity. The following is a discussion of these modifications and their contributions to the success of the operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Kemess South Mine, a major producer of gold and copper, is located in north-central British Columbia. Kemess was brought into production in May 1998 by Royal Oak Mines with a modern mill controlled by a fully integrated Foxboro IA DCS system and employing 134 people. On February 11, 2000 Northgate Exploration Limited (now Northgate Minerals Corporation) acquired Kemess Mine from receivership. Since acquisition in 2000, Kemess has seen many accomplishments, including the reduction of costs by 40% site wide.The mill has a nameplate capacity of approximately 56,000 tonnes per day which is processed through a Metso (Svedala) 60” x 89” Primary Gyratory Crusher and then conveyed by a 60” conveyor to a stockpile with 48 hours of total storage capacity. The nominal minus 6” rock from the stockpile is fed to two parallel grinding circuits (A & B). Each section consists of a 10.4 m F x 4.7 m SAG mill with dual drive motors (4,480 kW apiece) discharging onto a 2.4 m x 7.3 m Metso (Svedala) single deck vibrating screen to remove the coarse material for recycle to the SAG mill by a Continental 45º high angle sandwich conveyor. Screen undersize is pumped along with ball mill discharge to a cyclopac consisting of twelve Krebs 66 cm F cyclones to classify flotation feed to a size of approximately 65% minus 200 mesh. Cyclone underflow feeds a Metso (Svedala) 6.8 m F x 11.0 m ball mill, also with dual drive motors (4,480 kW apiece). The primary grinding circuit has 35,840 kW available for grinding."

Introduction The township of Swayze, from which the Swayze gold area derives its name, is in the Sudbury mining division, approximately 150 miles northwest of Sudbury. The gold area may be regarded as situated at the southwest corner of a triangular area whose northeast and southeast corners are at Porcupine and Shiningtree, respectively, and whose sides are between 70 miles and 90 miles in length. On a geological map, it would be found that belts of Keewatin greenstones and sediments form the sides of this triangle, and that they surround a large granite mass. Prior to the summer of 1931 the Swayze corner of this triangle had probably been less prospected than the other parts and comparatively little was known of it from the standpoint of gold mining possibilities. The extensive belts of iron formation to the south and west of Swayze received some attention about the year 1909, and during the years 1927 and 1928 some prospecting was done in the townships of Greenlaw and Cunningham, south of Swayze, but chiefly for base-metals- copper, zinc, and lead. In the summer of 1931 a very promising discovery of gold-bearing quartz was made by J. G. and J. L. Kenty, working for the Brett-Trethewey Mines, Ltd., in association with Northern Canada Mining Corporation, and Northland Prospectors, Ltd., and this property, now known as the Kenty Gold Mines, Ltd., has been actively developed with very encouraging results. Following this discovery a6d during the summer of 1932 much prospecting took place in the area, as a result of which a number of other discoveries of gold were made, chiefly to the west of the original find. They are distributed over a wide area, which includes the townships of Rollo, Raney, Swayze, Denyes, Halcrow, and Greenlaw.

"This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. A flotation circuit scheme is always a complex network of more than two dozens slurry streams. THE Northwest Territories covers a very large area-more than one-third of all Canada-and its most northern point, Cape Columbia in Ellesmere island, is distant only 500 miles from the Pole. Our first knowledge of the Arctic Archipelago, of which Ellesmere island forms a part, resulted from a gold-mining venture in Queen Elizabeth&apos;s reign. The English navigators of that time were eager to find a north-westerly and shorter and Jess hazardous route to the riches of China and Japan than that which Magellan had discovered, but they were unaware that the continent then known to bar a direct route extended in great width far to the north. Frobisher was one of these navigators. He reached in 1576 the bay in Baffin island now named after him, convinced that he had found a passage connecting the Atlantic with Asiatic seas. Forced to re-turn after ordeals in which ice, wind, and Eskimos flayed formidable parts, he brought back, among other novelties, a piece o black stone which had been picked up casually by one of his officers, and gave a little of it to the wife of one of the venturers, or financial backers of the enterprise. To quote now from Hakluyt: ? &apos;She by chance threw and burned it in the fire so long that , at length being taken forth and quenched in a little vinegar, it glistered with a bright marquesset of gold. Whereupon the matter being called in sorne question, it was brought to certain goldminers in London to make assay thereof, who indeed found it to hold gold and that very richly for the quantity." On the strength of this, the venturers, anticipating much profit, launched a second expedition to secure more of this stone, and 143 persons, including 14 miners and finers, set forth in 1577 and returned the same year, with, however, 200 tons of another mineral. Influenced by glowing accounts of veritable mountains of this mineral and by assays made after "additaments"-that is how "salting" in those days was described-the venturers, including Elizabeth, supplied funds for erecting a smelter and refinery at Dartford and outfitting a stilllarger expedition. And so, in 1578, fifteen ships departed with the Queen&apos;s blessing, for the same remote shores. After many mishaps, they returned with over 1,000 tons of the mineral, but when it yielded very little of value at the works in Dartford, the? Company of Venturers was forced into liquidation. Though our first prospector and miner was rather inconsiderate of the investors, he proved the existence of an archipelago, hitherto unknown, and secured much information about the new land and its dwellers.

"In the Blind River area Proterozoic clastic and sedimentary rocks and minor volcanic rocks (The Huronian Supergroup) uncomformably overlie and trangress northwards over dominantly granitic Archean terrane (2500 + Ma) and are intruded by Nipissing Diabase (2ll5 Ma). Later deformation and metamorphic events are recognized. The developing depositional basin was controlled by the incipient Great Lakes Tectonic Zone marginal to the Algoman Craton.The Matinenda Formation (basal Huronian) comprises northwards-derived fluvial arkose, quartzite, and pyritic, uraniferous oligomictic conglomerate which contained in 1981 some two-thirds of Canada's uranium resources. Production to December 1981 from Elliot Lake totalled 98.3 thousand tonnes U for an average recovered grade of 0.1% U with an additional 671 tonnes U recovered by leaching at Agnew Lake. The remaining resources are at lower grades. Some thorium and yttrium have been produced. Minor amounts of gold reflect the paucity in the source area. Gold is better-developed in the Huronian north of Sudbury reflecting the local source area.The conglomerate beds lie in southeasterly-striking zones controlled by basement topography down sedimentation from uraniferous Archean granite. Uraninite textures, the distribution of monazite, and local enrichment by reworking indicate a syngenetic, probably placer, origin of the mineralization. ""Brannerite"" has formed by solution of uranium from the margins of the uraninite grains and redeposition on the original titaniferous minerals. Penecontemporaneous volcanics may have been a source for sulphur in some of the pyrite and of trace amounts of Co, Ni and Au. Some pyrite may be detrital, some may be authigenic and some introduced.Drab coloured rocks, uranium and sulphide mineralization, the presence of hydrocarbon (thucholite) and a post-Archean regolith formed under reducing conditions have been cited as evidence of an early Precambrian reducing environment extended to the atmosphere. Sedimentary features indicating fast-flowing water and possibly a cold climate imply that the uraninite would be exposed to whatever oxygen was present in the atmosphere under conditions which would inhibit complete solution. In the upper Huronian, red beds and in the Lorrain Formation a monazite - iron oxide assemblage and copper mineralization indicate more oxidizing conditions. . Similar uranium deposits occur at Agnew Lake and in the basal Huronian north of Sudbury there are minor uranium and gold values.Provenance, lack of complete oxidation, transportation and depositional processes, redistribution during diagenesis and possibly low grade metamorphism, and the lack of post-depositional destructive processes are the dominant factors in the formation and preservation of the ores. The modified placer theory of genesis is well entrenched and an exploration model for such deposits throughout the world is well-documented.Research continues on mineralogy and textures of the ores, detailed sedimentology of the ores and their host rocks, with particular emphasis on: provenance area, the influence of early Precambrian mineralization patterns on the mineralization present in the Huronian both in space and in time, fluvial sedimentation and diagenesis. Expansion and reopening of the mines of the Elliot Lake camp should facilitate further studies."

For the past several months 1 have been considering the functions of this Society and its reasons for continuance. The fact that it is now sixty years old indicates that it must have been of value and we all know that it has contributed much that was worthwhile to Nova Scotia and the Maritime Provinces. The question arises: "What is the future of the Society, and how might its activities be altered to suit present-day activities and to be of even greater value?" Let us analyse the various activities in which we are interested and determine which, if any, are of more value than others. First of all, at least once a year we have a two-day convention which constitutes a holiday for the members and their wives. This has always been well planned and has been much enjoyed. Second, there are many social and business contacts made during the meetings and interim meetings. These certainly tend toward better relations and co-operation between the various people concerned. Mine operators meet other mine operators, engineers, people from the education fields, Department of Mines, and so forth. Various sales contacts are made at these meetings which can be of value and use to both the Company selling and the customer. Third, and of greatest importance in any conference, is the exchange of ideas by the members and by authorities from outside, and the presentation of slides and drawings, or actual visits to operations. It is upon this phase that 1 wish to elaborate. These papers are not only presented to our meetings but are generally published in the C.I.M. Bulletin so that members throughout the Dominion have access to them. Many important papers describing new phases of operations have originated through our Society.

"This is an account of the expansion of Texasgulf's Timmins concentrator by the building of a fourth circuit.The original capacity of the mine and concentrator was 3.6 million tons per year of ore. In 1974, Texasgulf decided to increase that capacity by about one third to 4.8 million tons per year. It was planned that the increased capacity would be available by mid-1978.The expansion involved work at the rninesite, increased railroad capacity, and a new circuit in the concentrator, and it is the concentrator expansion which is described here.In 1974, the minesite drew its ore from the open pit. The pit was being phased out and was to be replaced by No. 1 mine. To allow for the expansion, a second mine was required. The railroad was capable of handling 18 car trains. Its capacity had to be increased to 27 cars per train and this, in turn, required two new locomotives. Each of these alone cost half a million dollars.The concentrator building in 1974 contained the concentrating equipment and miscellaneous services (such as machine shop, warehouse, analytical lab). The grinding and flotation sections were divided into three circuits ('A', 'B', & 'C'). 'A' and 'B' circuits treated copper-zinc ore and 'C' circuit treated the much more difficult copperzinc- lead ore. This 'C' circuit had been modified over the years to implement improvements in the metallurgy."
