Located about an hour drive south from Washington, D.C., the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) contracted with Skanska-Corman-McLean (SCM) to deliver a new Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas "Mac" Middleton Bridge, which takes U.S. 301 over the Potomac River, spanning 1.9 mi (3 km) from Maryland to Virginia. The new bridge aimed to improve capacity, safety and access of the roadway and was planned as a four-lane span with deep foundations that would be constructed fewer than 150 ft (45 m) north of the existing alignment of the more than 80-year-old bridge. The new Harry Nice Bridge opened in the fall of 2022 with a design life of more than 100 years, servicing 12 ft (4 m) wide lanes with 2 ft (0.6m) shoulders, doubling capacity, enhancing emergency response, upgrading maintenance and inspection activity access, and featuring lane sharing for cyclists.

This paper evaluates the effects of pile diameter on the initial modulus of subgrade reaction and proposes modifications to the subgrade reaction moduli that are commonly used in the current state of practice based on American Petroleum Institute (API) guidelines. Three-dimensional continuum finite element model of a soil-pile system is simulated under monotonic lateral loadings to develop benchmark data. The benchmark data, which includes small (0.5 ft) to large (10 ft) diameter pile responses, is used to estimate the initial modulus of subgrade reaction for each of the considered pile sizes. The study shows that the subgrade reaction moduli provided by API may underestimate the actual soil stiffness at the soil-pile interface for large diameter piles and may overestimate it for piles smaller than a certain diameter. A simple equation is proposed herein to adequately estimate the initial modulus of subgrade reaction for all pile diameter ranges. The proposed equation is validated by the measurements of full-scale field tests.

Static pile load tests were performed in order to evaluate bearing capacities and mechanical behaviors of three different pile types: (1) steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with rebar reinforcements inside the concrete, (2) steel-concrete composite drilled shaft without rebar, and (3) conventional drilled shaft (reinforcement concrete pile). The material elastic moduli obtained from pile load tests of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts with and without rebar reinforcement were found out to be similar. On the other hand, the elastic modulus of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts is almost twice as high as that of the conventional drilled shaft. The ultimate strengths of the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with rebar, the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft without rebar, and the conventional drilled shaft were 9,810, 7,848, and 4,414kN, respectively. The results of these load tests reveal that the ultimate strengths of the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with reinforcement and that without reinforcement are 2.22 times and 1.78 times greater that that of the drilled shaft. The structural failures of the steel-concrete composite drilled shafts occurred either at the boundary between tip of steel casing and rock-socketed concrete.

"INTRODUCTIONNo. 1 Queens Rd was an existing 10-storey office building founded on large pad footings. This project involved the construction of a 6-level, 15m (50-ft.) deep basement excavated immediately adjacent to the existing building and also beneath the existing footprint of the Southern end of the building. The total perimeter of the new basement was to be approximately 200m (656 ft.) all with a retained height of 15m (50 ft.). It was also proposed to add a further 5 storeys to the building. Approximately 18 of the existing columns supporting the 10-storey building were to have the applied column load diverted from the existing foundations at ground level onto the new piles or basement raft 15m (50 ft.) below.The geotechnical profile consisted of fill for the top 1.5m predominately comprising of clayey sand with a high gravel content from 1.5m to 9m (5 to 30 ft.), a medium dense to dense clayey sand and then below was a sandy clay extending to 15m (50 ft.) ranging from stiff to very stiff. From 15m on completely to extremely weathered siltstone was encountered. The groundwater was measured at 9.5m (31 ft.) below the natural ground surface.DESIGN BRIEFThe existing building columns were founded on large pad foundations up to 4.4m (14.5 ft.) square, founded on the dense clayey sand. These pads would require temporary support to enable the excavation to proceed beneath them. Upon completion of the excavation under the pads new columns were to be constructed joining into the existing columns to transfer the load onto the new raft slab, 15m (50 ft.) below. The existing 10 floors were to be refurbished. It was planned to undertake all the temporary support and transferring of loads while the structure above was only able to provide a dead load. It was decided that any movement of the building would have minimum impact on a skeleton structure. During the temporary support of the columns, movements due to construction activities had to be monitored to understand any potential stresses in the structure above.The original design required beams to be installed under the pads and supported at either end by temporary piles that were to be founded below the level of the proposed excavation. (Refer to sketch 1). Wagstaff Piling considered that this methodology had difficulties in construction at all stages and did not provide facility for transfer of the load without significant movement of the structure above. Wagstaff Piling revised the design to attach beams to the columns above the pads using shear collars. (Refer to sketch 2). These beams supported on the temporary piles could then be jacked upwards to remove loads off the pads. This would enable removal of the pads with minimal movement of the 10-storey building above. This paper addresses a new experimental procedure to measure the shaft friction and the base resistance of bored piles during static load tests. It is proposed that a set of polystyrene foam discs, placed between the shaft and the base of the pile, be used instead of the usual instrumentation. Throughout the initial stages of the loading test, the foam discs will allow only the mobilization of the shaft friction. The load x settlement curve clearly shows that the shaft friction vanishes at low settlement values. As the load test proceeds, the base resistance is also mobilized. This procedure was used in two belled piles bored at the Experimental Foundation Field of the University of São Paulo, at São Carlos, Brazil. Both piles were 8 m long and had a shaft diameter of 0.6 m. The enlarged base had a diameter of 1.5 m and a height of 0.9 m. Twenty foam discs with a thickness of 20 mm each were placed between the enlarged base and the shaft of the pile. The load tests indicated ultimate shaft frictions of 28 and 30 kPa for measured settlements of 8.98 and 7.39 mm. Base resistance values at failure were 617 and 499 kPa, for a chosen settlement of 10% of the pile base diameter. The proposed approach seems to be straightforward, efficient and inexpensive.

Of the three projects, particularly the extensive Nimitz II (downtown) project, a single system, which was part of the operation, was used to control the spoil. Spoil control was continuous with the work since a vacuum truck and crew was used to suck up the spoils as they came out of the borehole. So, the whole job was kept clean both during operations and at the end of the shifts. On the Sand Island project, a double system was used. Larger spoil quantities were contained within the shaft limits during the work and the cleanup or disposal of the spoils was performed during excavation.

Over seven years ago, on October 29, 2012, Superstorm Sandy pummeled the Northeast of the United States inflicting heavy damage on New York City Transit’s (NYCT) system. Since then, NYCT has been methodically rehabilitating and hardening its assets to upgrade service and prevent future impacts caused by similar devasting storm surges. Part of these resiliency efforts, NYCT’s 207th St Yard Project is one of many projects that make up the Sandy Repair and Flood Mitigation Program. The work to be performed on the 207th Street Project includes building a perimeter Floodwall along the Harlem River, extending up 215th Street and 9th Avenue with the intent of having the ability to withstand a 500 Year Storm flooding event. The original 1,535 lineal feet of the marine side floodwall design consisted of 937 each W40x235 H-Piles continuously welded to PS 27.5 flat sheet to form an interlocked and composite steel seawall that would protect the NYCT 207th Yard from a storm surge of the Harlem River. However, after the Contract was awarded and a Notice to Proceed was issued, Walsh Construction Company II (WCCII) partnered with Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MRCE) to propose a redesign of the marine wall section as a Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP). This VEP redesign is comprised of 279 each 54in Diameter Steel Pipe Piles that are interconnected with continuously welded PZ 35 sheet piles interlocks. The intent of the VEP was to provide a cost savings that could be shared by both parties as well as alleviate some constructability and alignment control concerns that WCCII had expressed to NYCT. The VEP allowed WCCII to substantially lower the total cost which was shared between NYCT and WCCII.
