Patterns of species colonization, biochemical interaction among species, and competitive phenomena were studied in four reclaimed areas in western North Dakota ranging in age from one to four years after mining, along with a site from a native mixed grass prairie for comparison. Early successional changes in floristic composition and soil chemistry were quantified. The mined sites had been contoured, topsoiled, fertilized and seeded. Despite seeding of agronomic species, initial colonization was by fugitive species; analysis of the seed bank in topsoil showed that the most dominant colonizers immigrate after topsoiling. Of the 95 species encountered, Kuchia scoparia was the most dominant in the first two years following mining. Kochlo had relatively low densities in the first year (50-80 plants m-2), but was robust and attained heights of 88 cm with a biomass of about 400 g m-2 In the second year, the plant densities increased to over 10,000 plants m"2 but the height and biomass were reduced to 15 cm and 90 g m-2. However, during the third and fourth years Kochia density declined and was practically non-existent by the fourth year, while the planted Agropyron grasses had concomitantly increased. Other pioneers like Amaran thus retroflexus, Chenopodlum album, Helianthus annuus, Salsola spp. And Setaria spp. showed a less abrupt but similar decline. Chemical analysis of the soils over the same time period showed decreases in electrical conductivity (E.C.), and in the concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Na, Li, Sr, and SO4 (due to leaching), while N increased. Field studies were conducted on the competitive relations between the dominant species - Kochia scoparia and Agropyron spp. - during early succession. It was found the Kochia acted as a "nurse" crop for several months during the first year of Agropyron spp. establishment, but then began to shade heavily by late July, thus reducing grass tillering. Field and growth chamber experiments on the intraspecific competition relations of Kochia demonstrated that its density and dry matter production, per plant and per unit area, conformed to several laws of plant population biology. Autotoxicity or the depression in growth of a species by its own degradation compounds, in Kochia, appears to be the main factor causing the decline in its growth. Results from a field experiment indicated that thinning dense second year Kochia stands to the density of first year stands did not alter the growth of Kochia, providing strong evidence for autotoxicity. Similarly, several growth chamber experiments demonstrated that small amounts of decaying Kochia leaves and especially roots were toxic to Kochia growth, but not Melilotus officinalis or Agropyron canlnum, Chemical analysis of the soils and plant tissues indicated nutritional im¬balances as shown by P/Mn and P/Zn ratios may be responsible for autotoxicity. In addition to Kochia, a bioassay experiment showed allelochemics to be important in several other colonizing species. Although our results indicate that later stage species generally have greater toxicities than first year colonizers, autotoxicity in the very initial stages seems to be accentuated by harsh habitat conditions. Several practices (mowing. fire, etc.) are used to manage grasslands. Mowing of the first year erect, annual, colonizing vegetation was shown to be beneficial in the growth and establishment of wheatgrasses after mining in western North Dakota. Plots containing Kochio predominantly were mowed in mid-and late-July, and in mid-August, during the first year of growth after recontouring, replacing topsoil. seeding and fertilizing. It was found the Kochia densities were reduced to two percent of the control and its biomass reduced to less than one-third when the area was mowed in mid-August. On the other hand, wheatgrasses showed increases of 23% in stem density and 860% in biomass production over the controls when mowed in mid-August. The mowing of Kochia just before seed-set apparently reduces interspecific competition between Kochia and Agropyron spp. during the following growing season. The method is highly recommended for use in hastening the establishment of planted grasses.

"The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively pros¬pected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941.The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program.The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.During July 1943, the coal area in the immediate vicinity of Costello Creek was geologically and topographically mapped. by Clyde Wahrhaftig and Jacob Freedman, geologists, U. S. Geological Survey. F. A. Rutledge, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines examined the property July 18 to 22, 1943, and a project of trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling was initiated on August 4, 1943. During the project Clyde Wahrhaftig remained at the Dunkle mine to interprets drill cores and assist the author in planning the explora¬tory program. The project was completed October 7, 1943.Field investigations were under the general direction of R. S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Branch, Mining Division. Coal analyses were made by Maurice L. Sharp, coal analyst for the Alaska Railroad.Special mention is made of the cooperation and assistance received from Clyde Wahrhaftig, geologist, U. S. Dunkle coal mine is in the Broad Pass region on the south slope of the Alaska Range at an altitude of 2,800 feet (fig. 1). It is situated within the Third Judicial Division, headquarters of which is Valdez, Alaska. The area is situated approximately at latitude 63° 15' N. and longitude 149° 30' W. and is connected with the Alaska Railroad at Colorado Station by an 11-mile gravel road that is passable throughout the year. This road is maintained by the Alaska Road Commission. A private telephone line to Colorado Station connects with the telephone and telegraph service of the Alaskan Railroad.The passenger rate from Anchorage, Alaska, to Colorado station is $12.10. Freight rates are $1.60 a hundred pounds for heavy machinery and $2.66 a hundred pounds for first-class freight.The Costello Creek coal basin is in an area of low relief and has been dissected by numerous creeks flowing down the south flank of the Alaska Range. The Dunkle coal mine is on Coal Creek, a small tributary of Camp Creek, 1,000 feet from their junction. About 700 feet below this junction, Camp Creek joins Costello Creek, which in turn empties into Bull River 1/2 mile above the latter's confluence with the West Fork of the Chulitna River. The only economically significant mineral exploited in Banglades - during 1981 was natural gas. Nitrogenous fertilizer production was important to the agricultural sector and was totally dependent on the natural gas for fuel and raw material. Domestic cement plants were also fu pled by natural gas. The flat river-delta terrain for most of Bangladesh makes the potential for discovering major mineral deposits poor. No large deposits of metal ores have been found and only in the small hilly southeastern section of the country is there even much chance of finding any. Heavy mineral sand deposits may eventually be exploited along the Chittagong coastline. There is a good potential for crude oil discoveries. The Bangladesh economy has been heavi¬ly subsidized by billions of dollars of foreign aid since the country's inception. A World Bank report recommended total aid needs of over $2.6 billion in fiscal year (FY) 1980-81. It received commitments for barely over one-half that amount.

Screening efficiency models developed to date rely almost exclusively on empirical formulas based upon large amounts of acquired operating data. A screening model was developed using a combination of empirical coefficients and explicit mathematical expressions which quantify screening phenomena. A series of screening tests was run to supply data for purposes of correlation and empirical coefficient evaluation. The model has been implemented as a digital computer program. The validity of the modeling procedure has been established by laboratory testing. Results generated by the model have been used to compile an applications handbook, which can be used to predict screening performance in lieu of using the computer program.

The State of Washington has a federal program that gives the Office of Surface Mining responsibility for assuring the reclamation of lands affected by coal mining. Most of Washington's coal-bearing regions lie west of the Cascade Mountains. The state's coal reserves are estimated at 1.4 billion tons, about 0.3 percent of the nation's total coal reserve. Steeply dipping. minable seams range from 2.5 to 25 feet in thickness. The occurrence of coal in Washington has been documented since the early days of its settlement; at one time, coal production played a significant role in the state's economy. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, coal was second only to lumber in Washington's industrial production. Coal production declined as other sources of energy were developed. By 1959, production was at 200,000 tons. Regulation of the coal mine operations in Washington is conducted by the Office of Surface Mining's Casper, Wyoming, Field Office and its local office in Olympia, Washington. All permit applications and abandoned mine land reclamation are completed by the OSM Western Support Center in Denver, Colorado. Inspections of mine and reclamation sites are conducted by OSM reclamation specialists located in Olympia.

The use of continuous mining machines has greatly minimized the necessity for blasting in coal mines, even during pillar recovery; however, explosives are still used to blast stumps. The use of improper blasting materials, improper procedures, or both has caused mine explosions and fires, with loss of life and property damage. Researchers and manufacturers are continuously improving explosives and blasting accessories; use of the more recently developed materials will make the blasting operation safer. Extreme caution is mandatory when blasting stumps, as the ignition of methane or coal dust may trigger an explosion or cause a fire. Since the blasting of stumps will no doubt continue, although often unnecessarily, this paper summarizes recent findings published by the Bureau of Mines and recommends safer methods.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract H0292025. The purpose of this project was to prove the feasibility of detecting hazards in a coal seam using a synthetic pulse radar. This work was conducted in three phases. The first was an analysis of the types of errors which might cause problems. The second was to build a breadboard radar and the third phase was to conduct a field test with the system. The work from each phase is discussed and the results of the field tests are presented. These results show propagation of the radar signal through 200 feet of coal along with reflections from 50 feet away. The final section contains recommendations for future development.

"In 1928, there were 47 fatal accidents in the California petroleum industry, 14.6 per cent more than occurred in 1927 when 41 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. This increase in the number of fatal accidents for 1928 has caused the first upward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1923. In no other year during the 6-year period have the fatalities in any one year been greater than those for the preceding year. This fact should be given serious consideration and study by the petroleum industry, and an endeavor should be made to cause the number of fatalities again to decrease and conform to the previous gradual declining trend of the fatality curve.The following chart shows the trend of fatal accidents during the past six years:Of the 47 fatalities in 1928, 30 occurred in the drilling and producing division, 1 in the pipe line and transportation division, 14 in the refining division, and 2 in the sales and marketing division. A comparison of the number of fatalities in each division for 1927, and 1928, is given in the following table:3"

The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah, and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co. at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

This study advances the use of elemental sulfur in structural materials by demonstrating its value in bonding high-strength, well-graded basalt aggregates to form sulfur-basalt concretes. Sulfur is an excellent bonding agent, and the strength of a thermoplastic sulfur-aggregate mixture depends, to a large degree, on the strength and grain-size distribution of the aggregate used. A 3-cubic-foot, electrically powered mixer with heat applied to the barrel was used to mix the sulfur and aggregate. Sulfur content of several mixtures was varied to obtain the best workability with a minimum of sulfur in excess of that necessary to fill the voids. The average grain sizes and grain-size distributions were also varied to determine their effects on strength. Unconfined compression tests of forty-five 6-by l2-inch cylinders yielded average strendths of 3,348 psi to 10,398 psi. The highest strength single cylinder was 10,717 psi. The cylinders were tested from 24 hours to 6 days after pouring; after 24 hours the rise in strength was very slight. From the results obtained it appears that sulfur can be a useful construction material. An evaluation was made of a high-vacuum application for sulfur concrete. Sulfur has a high vapor pressure at elevated temperatures, 50° to 100° C; consequently, significant losses by sublimation can be expected. At lower temperatures the losses are not significant; however, this factor will limit its use at a higher temperature.

Models made by encasing strain-gage networks in epoxy are described and evaluated. With this technique relatively complex models can be constructed in which any number of gages can be located and alined precisely. Although the gages are an integral part of the model matrix, they create no important mechanical or thermal stresses. Model construction techniques and experimental data proved reproducible and reliable. In addition, the sGlution obtained with these models to the problem of the state of stress around a circular hole in a plate subject to a plane stress condition was in agreement with theoretical, photoelastic, and finite-element solutions.

As one of its projects for degasification of major panels of coal prior to mining within them, the Bureau of Mines conducted methane emission studies during development of a set of three headings 1,800 feet in a major coal panel (2,700 by 3,500 feet) which had been completely isolated by sets of main headings for 12 months in the Federal No. 2 mine (Pittsburgh coalbed) in northern West Virginia. Similar emission studies were conducted in the development of two sets of main headings in virgin coal areas nearby. Comparing the two sets of data indicated that the isolated coal panel had been degasified by approximately 70 percent.

Significant progress has been made in the reduction of serious injuries and fatalities resulting from mine blasting operations. Despite the progress, injuries and fatalities continue to occur. A leading cause of injuries and fatalities from blasting continues to be inadequate blast area security. Even though significant improvements in technology have been made, insuring adequate blast area security remains a challenge and requires constant vigilance. The advances in technology have created safer blasting products and have improved productivity and economics by enabling large, more efficient and effective blasts. However, as blasts grow larger in size, the complexity of adequately securing the blast area increases even more. Periodically the basic fundamentals involved in blasting safety should be reviewed, particularly for securing a blast site regardless of the size of the planned blast. Factors such as flyrock and toxic fumes must be taken into account to insure the safety of persons and property from the results of a blast. This paper examines the factors related to injuries due to inadequate blasting shelters and blast area security, and identifies mitigation techniques. The key concepts are: (a) accurate determination of the bounds of the blast area, (b) clearing employees from the blast area, (c) effective access control, (d) use of adequate blasting shelters, (e) efficient communications, and (f) training. Fundamentals are reviewed with an emphasis on analyzing task elements and identifying root causes for selected blasting accidents. Mitigating techniques are presented along with discussions and examples.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have developed adaptive process control systems in which genetic algorithms (GA's) are used to augment fuzzy logic controllers (FLC's). GA's are search algorithms that rapidly locate near-optimum solutions to a wide spectrum of problems by loosely modeling the search procedures of natural genetics. FLC's are rule-based systems that efficiently manipulate a problem environment by modeling the "rule-of-thumb" strategy used in human decision-making. Together, GA's and FLC's include all of the capabilities necessary to produce powerful, efficient, and robust adaptive control systems. To perform efficiently, such control systems require a control element to manipulate the problem environment, an analysis element to recognize changes in the problem environment, and an adaptive element to adjust to the changes in the problem environment. The control system also employs a computer simulation of the problem environment. Details of an overall adaptive control system are discussed. A specific laboratory acid-base pH system is used to demonstrate the ideas presented; all results are from the physical laboratory system and not from a computer simulation.

Reconnaissance studies of beach sands along the eastern part of the Gulf of Alaska were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine if any of these coastal areas warranted investigations as possible sources of valuable minerals. Because of difficult access and limited transportation facilities only a minimum of sampling, surveying, and camping equipment is utilized to obtain spot samples from key areas as well as information indicating the location, size, and character of the deposits. Such data were obtained from beaches located along approximately 247 miles of the Gulf of Alaska coastline during parts of the 1957 and 1958 field seasons. A total of 201 3-inch-diameter auger holes, spaced roughly at 1 mile intervals, were bored by hand methods to depths ranging from 3 feet to 27 feet; also 33 shovel samples were collected from selected localities. Samples were reduced to a rough concentrate in the field by panning; the rough concentrates were shipped to the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Juneau for further concentration and for petrographic and chemical analyses. Particular attention was given to the heavy-mineral content of the concentrates, although the types and relative amounts of rock-forming minerals were also determined. The reconnaissance indicated that, generally, the valuable mineral content of the beach deposits was too low to be of further interest except in the vicinity of Yakutat and Lituya Bays where erratic but possibly significant concentrations of magnetite and/or ilmenite were found. At Yakutat, about 20 miles of beachline extending southeasterly from Ocean Cape, yielded samplas containing from 1 pound to over 300 pounds of iron and from a trace to over 100 pounds of titanium dioxide (TiO2) per cubic yard of beach material. However, the higher grade samples represented local concentrations of minor importance. The general tenor of the Yakutat beach, as indicated by the airthmetical average of 27 auger-hole samples, is about 35 pounds of iron and 20.5 pounds of titanium dioxide per cubic yard of beach material. Ilmenite is the predominant heavy mineral of the beach deposits in the vicinity of Lituya Bay, but it was found in concentrations only in limited areas near the

"The experimental flotation work described in this paper was undertaken to test the conclusions derived from a previous microscopic and chemical study of several samples of converter slag. That study3 resulted in the conclusion that approximately 90 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag wad in either the sulphide or metallic form, and that if the slag were cooled slowly the copper-bearing material would be in particles of such size that they would be freed from silicate and magnetite grains by grinding the slag to pass a 150-mesh sieve. If this were true, it should be possible to separate the copper-bearing grains from slowly cooled, converter slag by the flotation process.Many attempts, of which the author has seen no published account, have been made to treat slags, especially converter slags, by flotation. In every case these trials have been made with chilled slags, in which, as shown in the preceding report, the copper-bearing material is top finely disseminated, to be freed by any reasonable degree of grinding.The flotation tests described in this paper have shown that it is possible to recover by flotation about 30 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag containing 3 per cent copper and to obtain flotation concentrates which have a copper content of 35 per cent.Acknowledgment is made to G. The synthetic fluormicas may be divided on the basis of silicon content into tetrasilicic, trisilicic, and disilicic. Properties of lead and barium disilicic fluormicas were determined to characterize these two representative members of the disilicic group. Properties described include unit-cell parameters from X-ray diffraction, optical data, chemical composition, density, melting point, and mechanical and dielectric properties. Both the lead and the barium micas were typically monoclinic; neither was sufficiently cleavable to yield usable mica splittings. Both yielded polycrystalline, machinable ceramics with excellent mechanical and dielectric properties.

This report describes the exploration and recent utilization studies the Bureau of Mines conducted on the Iron King, Chambers, and Dry Camp chromite deposits in the John Day district, Grant County, Oreg. The field investigations were undertaken during parts of 1939 and 1942 to determine the tonnage and grade of chromite in the district that could be utilized as a war reserve for the steel industry. As a result of the Bureau's field work, which included construction of 9 miles of access road, 6,204 feet of diamond drilling, 195 channel samples, and 1,020 linear feet of trenching, an ore reserve of 208,000 tons of 22-percent chromic oxide was indicated in the 3 deposits. Less than 1,000 tons of this ore has been mined since the field work was completed because the 2 largest deposits are submarginal in grade and there is as yet no incentive to develop and mine the ore. Since the war, however, the Bureau has been seeking means of utilizing the ore. Two methods of utilization that show promise are direct smelting of the ore in an electric furnace and use of the chromite for making refractory brick.

INJURY experience and employment data at all metal mines in the United States and Alaska are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1958. This publication covers the metal mining industries, and contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines, ore-dressing plants, and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants. These operations report injury and employment information annually to the Bureau of Mines on a voluntary basis. The Bureau is authorized to make requests for such data, and the information submitted contributes immeasurably to the promotion of safety in the metal mining industry. Every effort has been made to make the annual canvass as complete as possible. This publication contains, along with production and development workers, the office employees at the mine location. The metal mines identified in this publication are classified according to the mineral ores mined; that is, copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, and miscellaneous metals.
