Application of the usual chemical methods to the determination of beryllium in the mineral-dressing products of a spodumene pegmatite was found to be unsatisfactory as to speed, accuracy, sensitivity, and range of analysis. A spectrographic method is described for the determination of beryllium. Samples are ground, mixed with borax, high-purity, flake graphite, and an internal standard; then they are fused, reground, pelletized, and excited with a high-voltage-spark discharge. Investigation of several spectrographic techniques to overcome matrix effects are described. The method developed gives results for beryllium in the concentration range from 0.002 to 5.0 percent; the average probable error of duplicate determinations was below 3.0 percent of the quantity present. INTRODUCTION The main source of beryllium in pegmatite is the mineral, beryl. Many of the conventional methods for the determination of beryllium in beryl are not suitable for control purposes because of lack of speed and accuracy, especially in the range below a few tenths percent. Beryl resists the usual chemical attack and can be lost in a hurried chemical analysis.

"Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. Analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal parameters such as interplanar spacing, d002, crystallite size along the c-axis, Lc, crystal size in the plane of the layers, L., mean number of crystallites, Nc, etc.Complicated electron microscopy methods such as defocusing, tilted illumination, axial illumination, etc., often have to be used in order to characterize complex materials such as randomly oriented crystals in soots and carbons. Sulfur is a plentiful, low cost, unique material whose physical properties can be altered and employed in structural applications. This program was undertaken to develop an optimum sulfur based formulation for use as a coating to both seal and support mine walls. The initial effort in the program was devoted to a laboratory study of the physical and mechanical properties of a variety of sulfur base coatings that were specifically formulated for this application. Concurrent with formulation development, laboratory equipment and techniques were developed for spray applying the sulfur based coatings to the ceiling and walls of a structure that simulated the interior of a mine. Much of the formulation work was guided by the experiences encountered when attempting to spray the formulations overhead. One hundred parts of sulfur modified with 10 parts of talc, 3 parts of milled glass fiber, and 2 parts of dicyclopentadiene was found to be a fire retarded, low odor, low eye irritation, sprayable formulation for sealing and strengthening mini, walls. An invention disclosure on this formulation was submitted to the Bureau of Mines and a patent application was filed. Various mineral samples were obtained and adhesive strengths of the formulation to these samples in both the wet and dry state were measured. With the development of an attractive sulfur based coating material, attention was directed to the design, fabrication, and testing of a portable spray application unit so that coatings might be applied in the field to various rock surfaces and earth formations for further evaluation. The unit was fabricated in the Southwest Research Institute shop. Once operational, the unit's capabilities were field tested and demonstrated at three separate locations. Upon completion of the field testing, the unit was shipped to the Spokane Mining Research Center where Bureau personnel were instructed in the use of the unit.

Computer-aided control of a mining machine requires a guidance system to aid remote positioning of the machine by determining its position and heading. The mechanical position and heading system (MPHS) developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines provides such navigation information during face maneuvers. This report describes the required theory, which yielded a reliable algorithm for calculating machine position and heading, and implementation of this theory in hardware and software design, which made surface testing of the MPHS possible. Analysis of the errors and test results showed that the MPHS provides reliable results and can, therefore, provide useful guidance information for face navigation.

"Several writers have called attention, in the technical press, to the possible failure of flame safety lamps in coal-dust laden atmospheres. Such writers question the safety or a flame lamp that has been proved only in atmospheres containing methane, believing that the resistance of the lamp to explosion would be lessened it coal dust constituted a part of the explosive mixture.If this be true, it follows that any series of tests devised to prove the safety of flame lamps for use in gaseous and dusty coal mines should not only embrace tests in mixtures containing various proportions of methane, but also in some of the tests the effect of adding coal dust to the explosive gaseous mixtures should be investigated.Some attention has been given this question by investigators, but the more common practice has been to make all tests in gas and air mixtures only, using methane when it was readily available. Apparently the English Accident Committee (1879-1886) who conducted tests upon 250 different lamps did not use coal dust in their tests. The first British requirements for the testing of safety lamps, issued as a result of the Coal Mine Act of 1911, made no mention of tests with coal duet.The Austrian Fire-damp Committee (1890) conducted a series of tests in which coal dust was used in some of the tests. In certain tests, the addition of coal dust apparently lowered the resistance of the lamp 1 meter per second. The Belgium investigators, Messrs. Watteyne and Stassart, conducted a series of tests in 1904 in which coal dust was used in a few tests without any marked difference in safety."

This report describes instrumentation which is part of a system for extinguishing mine fires by pumping material through surface boreholes in order to seal off all underground passageways leading to the fire area. Major instrumentation systems include a closed circuit television probing system and an acoustic seal checking system. The latter consists of a speaker probe, a receiver probe and related signal processing equipment. All probes can be winch-deployed down a 6-inch diameter borehole. The CCTV unit can be rotated 360 degrees in the horizontal plane, and contains sufficient lighting to reliably assay conditions for sealing or rescue within a 200 foot radius. The acoustic seal checker monitors the completion of a seal as it progresses by use of probes lowered through boreholes on either side of the seal.

The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the SrF2-Y2O3 system for which liquidus and solidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. The phase diagram was constructed from information obtained by ceramogra¬phy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and electron probe microanalysis of small specimens encapsulated in platinum-20 percent rhodium or molybdenum ampoules. The data indicate a simple eutectic system with limited terminal solid solubilities. The eutectic temperature is 1,457°±5° C, and the eutectic composition is 4±1 mole-pct Y203. Strontium fluoride containing up to 2 wt-pct 0 2 was studied to determine the effects of oxygen contamination. Oxygen levels in excess of 0.2 wt-pct resulted in eutectic formation between SrF2 and SrO. The eutectic composition is between 0.2 and 0.7 wt-pct 02, and the eutectic temperature is 1,447°±5° C. No intermediate oxyfluoride phases were detected.

The mining industry of the United States has long been severely criti- cized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, not only as compared with other industries of the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries, particularly Europe. Statistics, often not strictly com- parable, indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These fig- ures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. The picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar mines in Europe, particularly England, Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. The sting is alleviated to some extent by the knowledge that our coal mines produce about 4 to 5 times as much coal per man day as is produced in at least some European mines. However, all of these foreign acci- dent statistics should be analyzed carefully before we become very much con- cerned about them, because they are not strictly comparable, for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions are definitely dissimilar to ours in many phases, and numerous other factors affect the comparability of foreign mine- accident statistics with those of the United States. Unquestionably, it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 140,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, three, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favor- able mine-accident rates than those of the United States (table 1). Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little more favorable than the comparable figures in the United States; namely, that mining has an accident severity rate about seven times the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

"The University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines collaborated to develop and field test a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS). The PDEAS was field tested in five underground coal mines that use continuous miners and a variety of diesel vehicles, including diesel haulage and utility vehicles. One mine was surveyed a second time, with the haulage vehicles fitted with a low-temperature disposable diesel exhaust filter (DDEF). Aerosol samples were collected with a variety of instruments, including the PDEAS and the microorifice, uniform-deposit impactor (MOUDI). This paper presents the diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA) concentration data collected in these mines and assesses the impact of diesel face-haulage equipment, with and without exhaust filters, on underground mine air quality.The average DEA concentration at the haulageway location for five mines, determined by the PDEAS, was 0.89 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.44 mg/m3 • DEA contributed 52 pct, of the respirable aerosol at the haulageway location. Use of the DDEF at one mine reduced DEA by 95 pct, with a standard deviation of 6 pct, and filter life averaged 10 h. DEA contributed a large proportion of the respirable aerosol concentrations in mines with diesel equipment, and a substantial reduction was achieved with use of a DDEF. INTRODUCTIONDiesel equipment is gaining popularity in underground coal mines. There are an estimated 1,951 units of diesel equipment in 152 underground coal mines compared with 1,100 units in 110 mines 5 years ago (J).5 This increased use is due to the recognition that diesel-powered vehicles are more versatile, which can contribute to increased productivity compared with their electrically powered counterparts. Approximately 33 pct of the diesel vehicles haul coal, 45 pct haul personnel and materials, and- 22 pct perform other duties, such as roof bolting, rock dusting, and road maintenance. Most mines using diesel equipment are located in Kentucky, Utah, Virginia, and Colorado."

A method for the electrochemical reduction of the benzene ring was developed and applied to the electrochemical reduction of coal. Successive electrochemical reductions of a vitrain from low-volatile bituminous coal in ethylenediamine saturated with lithium chloride resulted in the addition of 53 hydrogens per 100 carbon atoms. Ultimate analyses and pyridine solubility of the vitrain recovered after each reduction showed that hydrogen added at the beginning has a much greater effect on solubility than hydrogen added at a later stage. Surprisingly, the removal of sulfur from the vitrain takes place only after the more reactive aromatic rings are reduced. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis and average molecular weight determination of the extracts of the reduced vitrain samples, representing about 18 percent of the vitrain, showed that these fractions had 95 percent of their hydrogen content on saturated carbon atoms and an average molecular weight of 800 to 900. A study of the effect of operating variables on current efficiency showed that current efficiency is highest with aluminum as cathode material and with lithium chloride as electrolyte. A substantial increase in current efficiency of difficulty reducible olefinic double bonds was achieved by adding a proton donor. This result is significant in connection with the electrochemical reduction of coal which proceeds from readily reducible aromatic double bonds to difficultly reducible isolated double bonds. It is proposed that reduction is achieved by electrolytically generated and subsequently solvated electrons and hence does not require prior adsorption of the substrate at the electrode surface. This offers a distinct advantage for electrolytic reduction of sparingly or insoluble substrates such as coal.

Phosphate deposits in Montana , Idaho , Wyoming , and Utah are important factors in the mineral , agricultural , and industrial economy in the western part of the Nation . This report presents background information , including geology , mining , beneficiation , processing , resources , and economics , assembled to provide a comprehensive introduction to a series of four area reports . About 20 percent of the Nation's phosphate is produced from the Western field where there were 6 surface and 9 underground mines in operation in 1963 . This region also has an estimated 58 percent of the Nation's phosphate reserves , and continuing development is assured by these abundant resources and an increasing demand for phosphate products . Long range forecasts indicate that the United States will continue to use increasing amounts of both agricultural and industrial phosphate products . Beneficiation has become an important part of the phosphate processing industry , and two flotation plants and several washing plants were in operation in 1963. Recent studies by the Bureau of Mines Metallurgy Research Center , Albany , Oreg . , have been directed toward developing flotation processes applicable to treatment of marginal phosphate rock . Other Bureau of Mines research is being directed toward improved methods of ore recovery , ground control , and mining .

Concentrated hydrogen peroxide (H202) is a highly reactive oxidizing agent that liberates heat when it decomposes. The heat liberated may be sufficient to ignite combustibles with which the peroxide comes in contact. For this reason, concentrated hydrogen peroxide should be handled only by personnel familiar with its many unique properties.6 Hydrogen peroxide is used as a bleaching agent in the manufacture of textiles; this is its major single use in the United States. It is also employed as a reagent in chemical synthesis, as a source of free radicals to start polymerization, as a foaming agent in the manufacture of porous substances, and for its effect on biological processes. Moreover, highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide is a compact source of energy that can be utilized both as a monopropellant and as the oxidizer in a bipropellant system, During World War II, large quantities of highly concentrated hydro- gen peroxide were used as propellants, particularly in Germany. Since then, production of the peroxide has increased rapidly; in the United States alone it has more than doubled since 1950.7 Because of its widespread use, increasing interest has been shown in the hazards of handling the high- strength peroxide.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the investigations of strategic mineral deposits in the United States under the Strategic Minerals Act. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and sampled numerous deposits pf fluoride ores in the Western States. Sample from those deposits that warranted further investigation were submitted to the Ore Dressing Section of the Salt Lake Station for metallurgical testing. This paper gives data summarizing the results obtained from laboratory studios of fluorite ores submitted from 12 deposits in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Wyomong. Only four of the Ores were found to be amenable to beneficiation for the production of acid-grade fluorspar concentrates with good recoveries. However, all of the samples were amenable to the production of concentrates meeting chemical specifications for metallurgical-grade spar.For the sake of clarity and convenience in presenting data, this report has been divided into six parts, each pertaining to metallurgical studies of fluorspar ores of a single State."

The organic act passed by Congress in 1910 instituting the Bureau of Mines provided that the director of the bureau should promulgate such investigations as might be necessary to determine the causes of mine accidents and the best methods of preventing them. With the object of accident prevention in view, Director Joseph A. Holmes, and others who were pioneers in the bureau, conceived the Plan of having first-aid and mine-rescue training as one of the major activities of the Bureau. Out of this plan grew the first-aid and mine-rescue contests, which have been featured as an incentive for men to take courses in this type of mine safety training. The first appropriation for mine-accident investigations became available on July 1, 1908, under the jurisdiction of the U. S. Geological Survey, with Dr. J. A. Holmes in active charge. During 1908 there had been some first-aid training in the Pennsylvania anthracite field and a start made in Illinois, although there appears to be no exact information as to when or where first-aid training in the mining industry first became a reality, it is generally conceded that the St. John's ambulance corps of Scotland was one of the first - if not the first - to make the work effective. In 1911, to celebrate the establishment of the Bureau of Mines and the formal opening of the Pittsburgh, Pa., station, a first-aid and mine-rescue demonstration was conducted on Forbes Field, Pittsburgh. President William Howard Taft and many other men notable in public life were 2 resent. This was the first general national contest of the kind held it the United States; and since then there have been a number of nation-wide first-aid and mine rescue contests, as well as some which have been international in scope. There are over one hundred first-aid and mine-rescue contests of various kinds held annually in connection with mining and the allied industries.

Petroleum technologists and progressive operators constantly are striving to increase the percentage of oil that may to recovered from reservoir rocks through wells. The exhaustive studies that have been made of the function of natural as in the production of oil, for example, have aided operators greatly in increasing the quantity of oil recovered from reservoirs. Natural gas dissolved in and otherwise associated under pressure with oil in reservoir rocks, however, is not the only source of energy available for moving oil through sands to wells. In becoming "reservoir—energy conscious" engineers have learned that in many petroleum reservoirs the edgewater flanking the oil accumulation constitutes a potential source of energy capable, through proper control, of increasing oil—recovery efficiencies materially. No longer is the encroachment of water into the oil— and gas—filled tart of the reservoir considered as an evil to be combatted by devious methods but rather a natural consequence, incident to the withdrawal of nil and as from the wells, that may be used advantageously in lengthening the flowing life of wells and increasing the economic recovery of oil and gas.

"Gas hazards may be divided into two principal classes- namely (1) inflammation and explosions; (2) asphyxiation and poisoning. Inflammation and explosion are prevented first by adequate ventilation so that gas sufficient to propagate flame or explosion can not accumulate, and second, by avoiding sources of ignition such as open lights, flames, sparks, electrical arcs, short circuits, or sparks. Ventilation is also the best preventive measure against asphyxiation and poisoning from toxic gases. When men must enter unventilated or poorly ventilated places containing poisonous or asphyxiating gases, suitable gas masks, hose masks, or oxygen breathing apparatus should be worn. As a rule, loss of life and property from gas hazards is due to ignorance of the properties and hazards of various gases commonly used, and consequently a failure to use proper measures for eliminating and meeting these dangers. It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the common gases and vapors with respect to the hazards involved in their use and to discuss the necessary precautions and methods for avoiding these dangersLight, heat, and power are prime essentials of our modern industrial civilization. The combustible gases and vapors used for the production of these necessary elements of our existence comprise the largest and most common group of domestic and industrial gas hazards. Almost every individual in his daily life subject to possible danger from asphyxiation, fire, or explosion due to one or more of these gases. For evidence one need only refer to the daily newspaper where headlines such as the following are frequently seen; ""Family asphyxiated by carbon monoxide from gas heater;"" ""Schoolhouse wrecked by gas explosion in basement;"" ""Man killed by automobile exhaust fumes in his garage;"" ""Fireman overcome by smoke fumes in basement ""Woman"".""Boman severely burned by accidental ignition of gasoline used in cleaning gloves;"" and 'in recent Years we often see ""Building wrecked by explosion of still in residential district.""It will be noted that these accidents are due to inflammation, explosion, or asphyxiation. Any combustible gas or vapor, when mixed, with air or oxygen within certain limiting proportions, will explode on ignition. The violence of the explosion varies with respective proportions of air and gas, and with the degree of confinement of the mixture. For example: Mixtures of natural gas and air containing between 4.5 and 12 per cent natural gas will explode, or propagate flame throughout the mixture without the continual presence of the source of ignition that started the inflammation. Roof support technology for longwall tailgates has changed dramatically during the past decade. Filling tailgates with conventional wood cribs is becoming the exception rather than the rule. Modern engineered timber support systems and a host of other alternative support products provide far greater capacity as well as stiffer response, thereby allowing the supports to resist roof movement with much less displacement than the soft wood cribbing used in the past. For these reasons, these products can provide superior roof control. In addition, the material handling requirements for support installation have now become a major consideration in the support design and selection process. Products such as conventional wood cribbing that require piece-meal construction of bulky, heavy components have diminished, while prop-type supports and products that can be installed with machinery and pumpable support technologies have grown in use resulting in fewer injuries to mine workers. Now, the opportunity exists to provide the safest, most cost effective support system, through engineering design rather than by trial and error and to optimize the use of the support system chosen. Yet this is rarely done. The key to accomplishing this task is to understand the interaction of the support system with the ground conditions at the installation site. A major focus of the paper is to conceptualize the support and interaction through the use of a ground reaction curve which relates the support resistance to the convergence of the longwall tailgate. The goal of any roof support design is to control the ground deformations and maintain the structural integrity of damaged or broken ground to the extent possible to provide a stable mine opening. In general, deformations will be a function of the stress environment and inherent strength of the surrounding rock mass. However, if the deformations are intimately linked to the stress changes such that the deformation can be controlled by the load resistance or reinforcement provided by a roof support system, then the loading behavior can be described as load-controlled. Conversely, if the deformation occurs irrespective of the installed support (assuming practical limitations), then the loading behavior is described as displacement-controlled. In this case, the deformation can be considered irresistible from a practical standpoint. In this context, the nature of the loading has significant consequences on the support design requirements. Finally, examples using the NIOSH Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) to develop design criteria using ground reaction data from underground studies and ways to include uncontrolled convergence as part of the design criteria for standing roof supports will also be discussed.

The Bureau of Mines surveyed waste disposal sites at 18 metal and non-metal mines and conducted laboratory and full-scale field tests to de-termine the effects of tailings deposition techniques on physical properties of tailings pond beaches. Survey data included measurements of beach slopes, descriptions of deposition techniques, and measurements of beach physical properties taken at various distances from the point of discharge. Laboratory tests involved depositing two types of tailings, each with different grain-size distributions, into a settling trough and determining the resultant physical properties of settled materials along the length of the beach. Side confinement and the closeness of the water pool to the point of deposition caused the laboratory results to be inconclusive. Full-scale field deposition tests conducted at the tailings pond of a cooperating mine showed that there were similarities in relationships between exit velocities of tailings slurry and physical properties of the settled tailings on the beach.
