Noise generated by continuous mining machines in underground coal production is an important health hazard. Bureau of Mines Contract J0387229 covers investigation of this noise through laboratory tests of simulated cutting operations and through in-mine noise measurements. The results of these investigations indicate that coal cutting noise and conveyor noise are dominant sources of mining machine operational noise. Typical noise levels for both cutting and conveying operations are approximately 97 dBA (decibels A-weighted). For full operation of all machine systems, the overall sound pressure level is approximately 101 dBA. In-mine and laboratory test results show excellent agreement in both A-weighted overall levels as well as in A-weighted one-third-octave band spectra.

In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. "INTRODUCTION Coals vary so widely in their burning characteristics that all coals prepared for domestic stoker use cannot be burned efficiently on every type of stoker. The overfeed stoker, a large number of which are in use in the Pacific Northwest, operates satisfactorily when burning low- to high-ash, noncaking bituminous or subbituminous coals, whereas on the clinkering-type, underfeed, bituminous stoker both caking and noncaking bituminous and subbituminous coals are burned, generally with ash contents below 12 percent and ash-softening temperatures between 1,800º and about 2,600º F. Because fly ash continues to be one of the most troublesome factors in domestic underfeed stokers, noncaking coals especially must be chosen carefully with respect to size composition, particularly as regards the exclusion of excessive fines. Their formation as a result of degradation in storage handling or because of crushing in .the stoker worm will increase the fly-ash nuisence.Bituminous and subbituminous coals with higher ash-softening temperatures and, often, higher ash contents have not been able to enter the domestic stoker-coal market in the Pacific northwest because clinkers are not formed readily during clinker-type underfeed-stoker burning, especially in mild weather, and because of the labor and attendant inconvenience required in handling larger volumes of ash. The work described in this report was undertaken to enable mines producing coals of the kind described to enter the stoker-coal markets. The anthracite stoker selected was one that conveys the refuse from the ash pit of the furnace and deposits it into one of two covered, dust-tight disposal cans."

"INTRODUCTION Alunite occurs within a radius of 10 miles of Marysvale, Piute County, Utah, in veins and as replacements of igneous rocks. A number of each type of deposit was explored by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, under the Strategic Minerals program during 1942. The exploratory work comprised geologic and topographic mapping, diamond drilling,,bulldozer and hand trenching, sinking test pits, rehabilitation of old workings, sampling alunite exposures, and constructing and repairing roads.ACKNOWLEDGNENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits; the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The Batesville district in north central Arkansas is one of the important sources of manganese ore and ferruginous manganese ore in the United States, with a history of production dating back to 1849. From studies by the Federal Geological Survey, it was recognized that the district probably still contains substantial reserves of low-grade ore. It was natural, therefore, that the deposits in this area should be among the first investigated by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic Materials Act of June 1939, by which the Bureau was authorized to explore domestic deposits of strategic minerals, at that time designated as those of antimony, chromium, manganese, mercury, nickel, tin, and tungsten. The field work of the Bureau of Mines in the Batesville district was done in two distinct phases. Under project 308, active from August 1940 to June 1941, carbonate-oxide ores were investigated at five separate areas in which 100 trenches, test pits, shafts, and edits aggregating 4,364 linear feet were excavated and 839 samples were taken and assayed. Under project 323, in progress from February 1941 to January 1942, wad deposits were explored at 10 separate areas by 408 prospect shafts, churn-drill holes, and bucket-drill holes aggregating 23,680 linear feet from which 285 samples were taken and assayed. Processes for beneficiating the wad ores were investigated at ore-testing laboratories of the Bureau of Mines.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 349 natural gas samples from 26 States and 2 foreign countries. The 3 samples from foreign countries and 339 of the U.S. samples were collected during calendar year 1983. The remaining seven samples were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1983. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and chromatograph. The results of these investigations are published annually to make the information available to the petroleum industry and the general public. Twenty-seven publications have presented the results of 13,332 gas analyses made prior to 1983. The first three bulletins (1-3)3 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24, 26-27) containing 8,104 analyses of sam¬ples collected since 1960.

The use of techniques and equipment designed to pneumatically place backfill into an underground mine opening through boreholes for subsidence abatement has historically met with limited success, largely due to the inability to directly monitor the placement of the backfill in the opening. The success of a backfilling project cannot be guaranteed if it is not known whether the underground opening has been completely filled with backfill material. To overcome the inability to directly monitor backfill placement, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a pneumatic backfilling system that allows for direct viewing of the backfill as it is placed in an underground mine opening. This system utilizes a recently developed pneumatic nozzle coupled with an instrumentation package that allows for real-time observations and measurements of backfill placed in an underground opening through a borehole. The nozzle utilizes a high-velocity airstream to redirect backfill falling through a pipe in the borehole and directly in front of the nozzle; the airstream redirects and propels the backfill horizontally into the .mine opening at over 100 ft/s. The instrumentation package, mounted directly to the nozzle, contains a video camera, high-intensity lamps, laser-rangefinder, electronic compass, and water sensor.

The Bureau of Minas has been charged by the Congress with the responsibility for administrating the provisions of the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act. One of the important duties of bureau inspectors under this act is to determine whether proper measures are taken to prevent mine explosions, which in moat miner includes Judea adequate rock dusting The investigation made after the explosion in Orient No. 2 mine, December 21, 1951, showed that much information is lacking on the adequacy of current rock-dusting and duet-sampling practices in the United States. To obtain such information, an intensive sampling survey was conducted by the Bureau in an Indiana coal mine. This paper summarizes the more Important findings from this survey, describes special samplings at several Pennsylvania coal miners, and discusses related studies in the Bureau's Experimental coal mine.

A great many of the abandoned mines examined are in this bed, and nearly all of the present active ones are. The Upper Freeport bed is also mined to some extent, and a number of the abandoned mines formerly worked this bed. As only three active mines are now (1927) working the Upper Freeport, the comparison of acidities is necessarily limited. Of these three, one had been idle since 1922 until shortly before it was sampled.The location of most of the mines was already known from previous work, but some of them had to be located by following up streams known to contain acid waters. A sample of the- outflow was collected in self-sealing bottles known as ""citrate bottles"" for the determination of dissolved oxygen by the Winkler method.5 Another sample was taken for the determination of acidity according to standard methods of water analysis.6 Ferrous iron was determined at the mine or very soon after taking the sample by titrating with a standard solution of potassium permanganate in acid solution. The hydrogen-ion value was determined by a standard double-wedge comparator.7From the total acidity values in each sample, which are the most important values, the total iron was calculated on the assumption that acidity as sulphuric acid was due to dissolved ferrous sulphate. This assumption is commonly made for mine waters, but is inaccurate to the extent that free acid is already present, and some of the iron is present as ferric, rather than ferrous, sulphate. The amount of ferrous sulphate may be a rough measure of the extent to which oxygen is lacking within the mine. The permanganate titrations just mentioned showed what part of this total iron was in combination as ferrous sulphate, and the difference .was assumed to be that in combination as ferric sulphate, after correcting for the amount of free acid already formed as shown by the titration values."

"The amount of ash in anthracite coal interests every buyer, and occasionally produces caustic comment, but there is a lack of authentic figures that will take the subject out of the realm of opinion and agitated fancy and. give a true picture of the quality of coal actually delivered. What per cent ash is to be expected when the coal is good, and when have we a right to make serious complaint?During the past summer the Bureau of Mines took 127 samples of 1000 pounds each, representing nearly 30,000 tons of anthracite is dealers' yards in seventeen cities in the State of Massachusetts. There were three objects in view, to discover the average and the variation in amount of ash in anthracite in some easily described area; to demonstrate standard sampling methods, and to learn something about the feasibility of itinerant coal sampling. Massachusetts was selected because its principal cities could be visited in a single season. There also appeared need for demonstration of standard sampling of coal, since a coal quality law had been passed in the State, to be administered by those unfamiliar with coal sampling."

That fatalities from mine explosions can be very much reduced from the experience of past years if not wholly eliminated was fairly well demonstrated during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1934 , there being only 28 deaths in the United States from explosions during this period . This is by far the lowest number of fatalities from explosions in the history of coal mining in the United States insofar as records are available . Although the frequency of occurrence of explosions has not decreased greatly during the past 6 years , there has been a marked decrease in severity , indicating that our coal -mining people are taking more effective precautions to prevent the spread of explosions . Pennsylvania is a good example of what may be done in reducing both the frequency and the severity of explosions ; by the adoption of up- to - date safety measures , Pennsylvania bituminous mines now have the enviable record of only one major explosion disaster in more than 5 years , and the one major explosion which did occur cost but 7 lives although 277 persons were exposed ; their lives were saved because rock- dusting prevented the spread of the flame and violence . Many of our other mining States are making definite progress in working mines without disastrous explosions and fires ; some of these , like Alabama , West Virginia , Indiana , Wyoming, and others now operating with few , if any , explosions , have had anything but a favorable record in the past .

The Tri-State district, as its name indicates, is composed of portions of three States, the southeastern corner of Kansas, the northeastern corner of Oklahoma, and an adjacent strip of Missouri east of these portions of Kansas and Oklahoma. An area approximately 40 miles long in a northeasterly-southwesterly direction, and 30 miles wide at right angles thereto, containing minable occurrences of ore at widely scattered locations, comprises the district. However, what has been and is the main productive area, is a strip about 35 miles long and 10 miles wide, which begins at Miami, Okla., as its southern extremity and runs in a northeasterly direction through Commerce, Picher, and Hockerville, Okla., Baxter Springs and Galena, Kans., and Joplin, Webb City-Carterville and Carthage, Mo. Almost the entire present production comes from the area between Commerce and Baxter Springs.

Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

Gob holes are routinely used by the mining industry to vent methane from gobs and to prevent it from entering the mine ventilation system. In some cases, flows from gob holes are measured by centering an anemometer on the end of a discharge pipe. These measurements are erroneous and tend to be high by as much as 30 pct. The Bureau of Mines deter- mined method factors (correction factors) for anemometer measurements taken in this manner. Method factors for 4-, 6-, and 8-in (10.2-, 15.2-, and 20.3-cm) ID pipe are 0.68, 0.71, and 0.78, respectively. Comparisons between horizontal and vertical flows indicated no significant change in method factors. Consequently, the method factors for horizontal pipe flows can be applied to vertical upward flows.

This Bureau of Mines study estimates the number of major pieces of coal- mining equipment that will be required to produce 950 million tons of marketable coal in 1980 and 1.2 billion tons in 1985. The coal tonnages were projected in the intermediate coal supply scenario of Project Independence Blueprint (PIB). The equipment projections were determined by consideration of historical trends and by evaluation of information from equipment manufacturers and mining companies. The ability of the manufacturers to meet the projected equipment demands was also determined. It was concluded that equipment supply offers no presently discernible constraint to mining 1.2 billion tons of coal in 1985. A shortfall in projected production for the intervening years, however, is probable owing to anticipated shortages of draglines.

Changes in the 1978 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1977, were of a mixed nature. Output of tripoli-type materials and garnet increased in both tonnage and value. Emery production also increased. But special silica stone product sales decreased in both tonnage and value, and the reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material also decreased for 1978. In 1979 output of tripoli-type materials and special silica stone products decreased in both tonnage and value when compared with the previous year. The tonnage and value of sales of garnet and manufactured abrasives increased when compared to 1978 data.

A mineral pigment is a colored substance dug from the ground, which after treatment can be mixed with a drying oil to form a paint. Not all colored earths, however, can be made into satisfactory pigment. Much depends upon the attractiveness and uniformity of the color and the ease of purification. Mineral pigments are distinguished from chemical pigments by a difference in origin and treatment. Chemical pigments are not found ready-made in the earth but must be synthesized or otherwise obtained from other compounds or elements; for example, cadmium yellow, a chemical pigment, is precipitated from a solution of cadmium chloride, hydrochloric acid, and sodium sulfide.

Numerous investigators have studied the addition of inert4 substances to coking blends. Generally, the results have yielded trends applicable only to the particular coals and inerts studied. Recently, somewhat more general results were obtained for cokes produced from blends containing added inerts, using the sole-heated oven. The present investigation represents an extension of this work to include a wider range of inerts and to determine the applicability of the various conclusions to cokes produced with the Tuscaloosa oven. The results indicated that an increase in dry-coal charge density of 1 pound per cubic foot (p.c.f.) caused a corresponding change in the hardness (1/4-inch tumbler index) of Tuscaloosa oven cokes of 0.9 percentage points. This value compares favorably with the value of 0.7 determined previously for the sole-heated oven and Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) retort.

Rail cars are referred to as "yellow-balled" when they are sufficiently old or damaged to preclude their efficient operation on long-haul or main line routes. For most coal carrying railroads, their alternative value is salvage. This, however, does not necessarily preclude their effective use, on a limited basis, by small mines located near existing trackage. Because of age, the sizes of these hopper and gondola cars ace currently 50 and 70 tons rather than the 100 tons commonly built at the present time. As a gathering system, yellow-ball rail could provide an alternative, particularly in Kentucky, western Pennsylvania and west Virginia, to coal trucks, conveyor belts and pneumatic pipelines [4, p.17], belts and pneumatic pipelines. Rail service of this type provides a limited alternative to track abondonment, a possible financial return to a railbank [3], a direct contribution to service demand on main lines, and a means by which many small eastern coal mines could retain or regain competitive viability [4]. In terms of energy efficiency, compared to trucking coal, the total direct energy impact (fuel) of yellow-ball rail can be expected to range from 280-990 Btu/ton-mile while that for trucks ranges from 1850-3120 Btu/ton-mile [2].

Heavy liquids have been used to separate minerals of different specific gravities for many years.4 5 6 7 8 9/ The method permits substantially quantitative evaluation of a variety of minerals and requires much less time than the usual methods of chemical analysis. This Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the applicability of heavy liquid mineral separation to the evaluation of certain spodumene and kyanite ores, prepared mixtures, and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mineral and associated gangue, estimates of chemical analyses could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separations.
