The objective of the present studies was to develop thick adherent and coherent coatings of platinum and palladium on refractory metals and other substrates of industrial and engineering importance. Existing platinum and palladium electrolytes were modified to make them suitable for the electrodeposition of thick deposits. The optimum operating conditions for these electrolytes were established. Pretreatment procedures for columbium, copper, graphite, molybdenum, nickel, stainless steel, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, and zirconium substrates were studied. New pretreatment procedures for columbium, molybdenum, stainless steel, tantalum, tungsten, and nickel were developed. The internal stress and hardness of selected electrodeposits were measured. The effects of heat treatment upon the properties of electrodeposits were studied.

Coal-mine explosions in the United States during the past 10 years ranked third among the causes of coal-mine fatalities and constituted 16.1 percent of the total fatalities. In Indiana, however, during this same period the percentage of fatalities from this cause was much higher than the average percentage for the entire country. It is only through knowledge of the factors that have led to these past explosions that intelligent steps may be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Although information concerning many of the earlier explosions is lacking, an attempt has been made to tabulate the information available in the hope that it may be of assistance in calling attention to some of the principal causes of explosions in Indiana.

In connection with experimental work by the Bureau of Mines to determine effects of back pressure . on oil wells * , data were compiled on the engineering conditions in the oil field selected , in order to afford a more complete understanding of the wells tested , and to illustrate the extent to which underground conditions should be studied when making oil -field experiments of this nature . This report , containing the data mentioned, may be of interest to the oil industry , as it describes briefly the methods of operation employed in developing and exploiting shallow well territory .

The Bureau of Mines investigated the caustic extraction of alumina and soda from retorted dawsonite-bearing oil shale, as part of a program to devise technology for treating alternative domestic sources of alumina for the production of aluminum metal. Colorado oil shale yielding 13 pct oil (35 gal/ton) and containing 12 wt-pct dawsonite (representing about 4 pct extractable alumina) was retorted to obtain oil-free (spent) shale Spent shale was leached with dilute NaOH to determine the effect of particle size, retorting temperature, leaching variables, and storage conditions on extraction of alumina and soda and dissolution of impurities. Maximum alumina and soda extractions were obtained by promptly leaching minus 28-mesh spent shale, obtained by retorting raw shale at about 5000 C, with 0.5N NaOH. Under these conditions, dissolution of impurities such as Ca, Fe, Ti, and P was low. Leaching tests were made on spent shale stored for periods of up to 30 days at 0° to 42° C and at 0 to 100 pct relative humidity (RH). These tests indicated that significant reductions in alumina extraction would occur if spent shale were stored in ambient Colorado air under naturally fluctuating temperature and humidity.

This report describes a method for treating pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data obtained with a Burnett compressibility apparatus. The method makes use of a general nonlinear least-squares technique developed at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center. It is assumed that an adequate functional form is available for the expression of the compressibility factor as a function of either the molal density or the pressure. The functional form of the compressibility factor can be either linear or nonlinear in the parameters to be evaluated. Formulas are given for calculating variances and covariances of all parameters evaluated and for calculating the variance of calculated quantities of interest.

Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. Model Description The magnetic field intensity components generated by a magnetic dipole immersed in an infinite homogeneous medium can be expressed in spherical coordinates as: [ ] where N, I, and (p a ) are the transmitting antenna turns, current, and effective area, respectively, and r is the range from the loops circumference to the measurement point. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews published information on synthetic berlinite (AlP04) and suggests experimental conditions requisite for its production. Berlinite is a piezoelectric material with potential use as a substitute for quartz in the crystal oscillators, which are components of electronic and electroacoustic equipment. Information gathered here (mostly from published sources) includes historical background, physical properties, end-use applications, criteria of quality, and physio-chemical factors involved in berlinite crystal growth. It is concluded that growing large high-quality berlinite crystal would require high-purity starting materials in an autoclave equipped with a noncorrodible liner and operated with temperature control of ±O.OO5 ac over a range of 250 to 350 ac.

Study of the ignition of firedamp by explosives and the phenomena that underlie it is one of the long-term investigations of the Bureau of Mines. This report is the third in e series by the Explosives Branch summarizing the progress made at Bruceton in this study. The first paper described preliminary work on small, carefully controlled cannon shots the second discussed the results of suspended shots.5/ In this paper, experiments are described and interpreted that extend and support the concept of ignition presented previously. The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of removing heavy metals from mineral-process waste streams by precipitation with lignochemicals and humic acids. Lignochemicals are by products from the paper industry, while humic acids are obtained by caustic treatment of peat, subbituminous coal, and lignite. These high-molecular-weight organic materials have many functional groups, which can coordinate and form innercomplex salts with heavy metals that are crystalline precipitates. Filtering of a humic-acid-or lignochemical-treated solution or waste stream containing these precipitates removes the heavy metal sequstrates. Tests were conducted with two lignochemical samples, three humic acid samples, lime (CaO), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in which increasing amounts of these additives were reacted with 50 mL of solution containing Fe3+ , Al3+, Cr3+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, and Hg1+. At the appropriate pH, greater than 90-and 99-pct removal was achieved for these 11 heavy metal ions from the 10-and lOO-ppm solutions, respectively, using lignochemicals and humic acids. Removal efficienC)' with these organic materials is better than that with CaO, especially for the more toxic ions, Hg1+, Cd2+, and Pb2+. Unlike the precipitates formed with NaOH or CaO, those with lignochemicals and humic acids are compact and noncolloidal. The volume of their sludge is sharply lower than that of the finely dispersed lime or soda precipitates; thus, their removal in settling tanks or by simple filtration is enhanced.

A lightweight fiberglass feed leg for hand-held pneumatic percussion rock drills has been fabricated and tested by the Bureau of Mines. Its lighter weight facilitates easier handling of the rock drill apparatus, thereby reducing the potential for back injury to the driller and in- creasing drilling productivity. Current hand-held feed leg drills of the same class are 50 pct heavier than the Bureau-devised feed leg drill, which is comprised of a reduced-noise drill and the fiberglass feed leg. In-mine tests of the fiberglass leg showed that its performance and cost are comparable to those of standard aluminum feed legs.

Three electrorefining cells were designed to investigate various factors associated with the electrorefining of reject - grade titanium sponge . Operation of the cells provided information on cell design as well as on how design and operating variables affected the quality of the titanium product . A sodium chloride - titanium chloride electrolyte was used , and the electrolyte chambers had capacities ranging from 400 to 3,500 pounds of molten salt . Major factors investigated were electrolyte composition , temperature and useful life , effect of various cathode shapes and materials of construction , methods for removing cathode deposits , effect of current density and cell potential , and the mechanics of deposit growth and crystal morphology . One of the cells was in intermittent operation over a 4 - year period and produced 2 tons of refined titanium . A product with a hardness of 80 or less Bhn (Brinell hardness number ) was consistently and easily obtained . Some metal with a hardness of less than 60 Bhn was produced . In one of the cells in which the electrolyte was held at operating temperature with an internal heater an ac input of 25 kw maintained 3,500 pounds of electrolyte at 850 ° C , but with an external heater 35 kw was required to maintain 400 pounds at 850° C.

At a meeting of the Anthracite Investigations Advisory Committee in July 1944 at Washington, D. C., the initial work and objectives of the Anthracite Mechanical Mining Section of the Federal Bureau of Mines were discussed. It was learned that interest existed in an improved performance of mining thin, steeply pitching beds above the gangway by mechanical methods. One company offered the use of one of its mines for experimental work, and this offer was accepted. Following acceptance, an effort was made by Bureau engineers to devise a mechanical method with a performance better than that of a new hand method proposed by company engineers for an actual mining condition. The method proposed by the Bureau was to drive 30-degree slant chutes across a 10-foot bed pitching 85 degrees. These chutes were to be advanced by using a lightweight, compressed air-powered, shearing machine of German origin that had been tried in a flat Pennsylvania anthracite bed in 1934, and which did not then prove successful because of blasting difficulties. An attempt was made to obtain one of these machines from England, where it was known machines of this type had been used. Shortly thereafter John W. Buch was sent to Europe as a member of the Solid Fuels Mission to the European Theater of Operations organized by the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Through his efforts the Bureau of Mines obtained two such machines, known as the Eickhoff model DEK, one from England and one from Germany. This report covers the preliminary testing of these machines in order to obtain mechanical operating data for use in determining the power requirements for cutting anthracite with machines of this design.

The value of careful fractionation in the manufacture of petroleum products is recognized more and more by petroleum refiners. Recent studies have shown that the quality of the products depends largely on the type of fractionating equipment and on the care used in operating the equipment. For example Rue3 has shown that careful fractionation of pressure distillate will greatly reduce the amount of chemical treatment necessary to produce finished gasoline. The advantages of the combination of pipe still and bubble tower in obtaining good fractionation are well recognized in the petroleum industry. However, the equipment designed in the past has in general been much too large for convenient laboratory use. The present paper describes a continuous-distillation apparatus for the laboratory study of fractionation. This apparatus has given very satisfactory results in the study of different crude oils and petroleum products. A discussion of the theory and action of bubble towers has not been given, as this subject has been discussed previously by Cooke and Rue4. It is believed that the distillation curves of the products obtained from this apparatus show clearly its capabilities.

Fibrous silicon carbide was produced by thermal decomposition of certain silicates contained in graphite crucibles. Induction heating was used to produce the necessary temperature and thermal gradients. Both green and white fibers were mainly the beta modification even though each color grew within a different temperature zone. Alpha silicon carbide, present in insufficient amounts for X-ray detection, was identified by electron diffraction. The white fibers formed in a zone between 1,365° and 1,634° C (±50° C). The green fibers (less contaminated) formed in a much more narrow zone between 1,650° and 1,672° C (±50° C). The average lengths and widths of microscopic fibers grown by this method were 1.5 mm/0.002 mm (white) and 1.2 mm/0.0035 mm (green); however, same fibers observed by electron microscope had cross-sectional measurements of 150 to 300 A. Both differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis showed that silicon carbide fibers oxidized in air at temperatures above 500° C. Fibrous silicon carbide was indexed as a cubic cell with the dimensions a = 4.358 A. The density calculated from X-ray data was 3.217 g/cm3.

The rapid; depletion of' known high-grade ore deposits in the Tri -State lead-zinc district and the recognized need for the development of additional reserves led the Bureau of Mines to make preliminary examination of sites possibly adaptable to low-cost open-pit mining methods. Abandoned mines whose ore deposits were known to have occurred at shallow depths naturally presented favorable test points for the development of possible open-pit orebodies. The Lone Elm mine was in this category.

A large number of organizations interested in the search for mineral deposits have adopted the magnetic method of geophysical prospecting, as it has proved to be the most simple, convenient, and rapid, and at the same time the least expensive in comparison with other methods. According to the last statistical data, about two millions square kilo¬ meters were explored in the United States by different geophysical methods. Ninety-six per cent of this area was prospected for oil and 4 per cent for minerals. Detailed exploration by means of the magnetometer has been carried out over about 85 per cent of this surface. The great advantages offered by this method resulted in the fact that the magnetometer was tried out in most places in which geophysical methods were applied. The main purpose of such e:rploration is to obtain the maximum knowledge valuable to the geologist; therefore good geological interpretation of the results of measurements is important. The possibility of drawing practical conclusions from a map representing the results of the study of the terrane depends greatly on the accuracy with which the measurements are made. The purpose of this article is to show the different sources of error by which the work of an operator may be affected and to discuss the means by which the carrying out of a magnetic survey may be improved.

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) reviewed all available information regarding geologic and depositional processes contributing to potential coastal and offshore platinum group metal (PGM) placer deposits around the Goodnews Bay Mining District. The Bureau found that favorable environments for PGM along with gold and chromite enrichment include: (1) buried paleofluvial channels; (2) recent paleofluvial channels with little marine sediment overburden, (3) beach deposits, particularly in the upper swash zone and near back beach environments; (4) paleostrand lines; (5) shoal lag deposits inside the mouths of Goodnews and Chagvan bays; and (6) bases of far offshore tidal ridges which may represent reworked glacial deposits. Limited geologic and compositional (assay) data prevent determination of deposit size and grade of PGM mineralization for each deposit class. Future geologic sampling requirements for demonstration of identifiable offshore and beach PGM-bearing placers are discussed. Beach and offshore sampling programs conducted by the Bureau in 1986 will contribute additional information providing verification of specific deposit classes.

Significant improvements in surface conditions or mechanical properties of steels have been attributed by several investigators to ladle additions of small quantities of rare-earth metals or their oxides. To investigate systematically these effects in wrought and in cast plain carbon and alloy mechanical steels containing approximately 0.35 percent carbon, heats of four representative compositions were melted by the Bureau of Mines in a 4-ton open-hearth furnace. Each heat was cast into three sets of ingots to exemplify respectively, treatments with (1) rare-earth metals, (2) rare-earth metal oxides, and (3) an untreated set as a control. The development of melting, casting and rolling practices is described and discussed. Lance injection of oxygen shortly after melt raised the temperature of the metal immediately as much as 500° F., principally because mechanical agitation exposed the high-carbon metal to the flame and furnace root. An exceptional degree of superheat in the metal at the termination of the refining period was attributed to oxygen injection during the refining period. Bath temperatures higher than industrial practice were permitted by the all-basic furnace lining. Rates of carbon elimination as high as 0.036 percent carbon per minute were achieved by oxygen injections.

The 19th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Civic Center, Charleston, w. Va., on October 2, 3, and 4, 1961. The meet was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other groups interested in safety. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1961 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: George Trevorrow (chairman), Bituminous Coal Operators' Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; Harry Gandy, Jr., National Coal Association; and James Westfield, Bureau of Mines.
