"The collection efficiency of dust particles was determined in a laboratory dust chamber equipped with a water spray. Measurements were made in the presence of selected nonionic, cationic and anionic surfactants. For the nonionic and the anionic reagents, efficiency was maximum in a narrow range of concentration. The surfactant concentration corresponding to high collection efficiency was usually much below the commonly used concentration of l "", however. In comparison, much higher collection efficiency was observed for a cationic surfactant at extremely low concentrations. For delineating the mechanism of capture of dust particles, surface tension and contact angle results were used to obtain a correlation between the work of adhesion and the efficiency of collection. Such a correlation was reasonable for the nonionic surfactants but not for charged surfactants. In the latter case, electrostatic interactions between charged droplets and particles were more important, especially for the cationic reagent. INTRODUCTIONSeveral methods are used to control dust in mines. These include: ventilation, foam, scrubbers and sprays. This article is concerned with improving the effectiveness of water sprays, which are widely used to remove dust particles during continuous mining, by adding small quantities of surfactants. Water sprays produce small droplets which act as collectors of dust particles suspended in air. Sprays directed at the actual source of dust have the additional property of wetting the coal before the ·particles become airborne (Hamilton, 1974). Wetting agents, also called surfactants, arc known to play an important role in many applications where dust is a problem. However, conflicting reports exist in the literature with regard to the effectiveness of surfactants in water sprays (for a review, see Chander et al., 1988). In spite of the conflicting reports, the use of surfactants for dust control has increased over the years. In a recent study by the Bureau of Mines, a 27'6 reduction in respirable dust levels was observed in a mine test when surfactants were added to sprays (Foley, 1991)."

"INTRODUCTION Limestone (which consists essentially of calcium carbonate) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) occur widely in the United States. Their presence is of vast economic importance, because they are used much more extensively than any other form of rock. In 1945, limestone (which, broadly, includes dolomite) was quarried in every State except Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Rhode Island, and also in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Total production (including that used in cement and lime manufacture) exceeded 151,700,000 tons, or 79 percent of the quantity of all kinds of stone sold or used during that year.Important well-known uses of limestone are as concrete aggregate, road material, railroad ballast, for liming the land, for cement manufacture, as riprap for shore protection, harbor work, and spillways at dams, and as building stone.. None of these uses, however, are considered herein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the industrial and chemical uses that are less widely known and yet are of tremendous importance in a great variety of processing industries. Important examples are dolomite as a refractory furnace lining and limestone as a fluxing agent in blast furnaces, and as a raw material employed in sugar, paper, glass, and alkali manufacture.PRIOR REPORTIn May 1941, the Bureau issued a report 4/ that described these uses in some detail. As new and important developments have taken place during the ensuing years, a revision and representation of the salient features of these uses seem desirable. Asphalt filler and mineral wool uses included in the earlier report are omitted from this paper because they are identified more closely with the highway and building industries, respectively, than with the industrial applications."

For more than 20 years, Belgium, leading all the coal-mining countries, has made increasing use of sheathed explosives, which wore first suggested by the late E. Lemaire, predecessor of the author gas Director of the Institut National des Mines. It appears to the author that it will be valuable to show how the use of sheathed explosives has developed in Belgium, how the various difficulties encountered in their manufacture have been overcome gradually, and the tyros of sheathing that have survived and the reasons for their survival.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions5/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The Bureau of Mines examined a low-, a medium-, and a high-volatile Pennsylvania anthracite by densimetric methods using four mesh si.s of each anthracite. Using high-pressure mercury the macropore volumes and distributions of these pore volumes determined, densities in mercury were calculated, and specific pore vo1.r. ware obtained from these mercury densities in conjunction with helium densities. The helium densities were also used with the ultimate analyses of these anthracites in calculating structural parameters by statistical densimetric methods. The effect of 106 or 108 rads of gamma irradiation in the presence of air and in vacuum upon the properties studied with two mesh sizes of each anthracite. Results of the statistical densimetric method seem to show some breakdown of condensed ring structural units at the lower irradiation level, with subsequent polymerization at the longer period of gamma irradiation. The structural parameters obtained also indicated that in going from high- to low-volatile anthracite, either the number of condensed rings per structural unit increased, or the degree of polymerization increased.

In spite of advances in measurement techniques and an explosive increase in the volume of research, our understanding of human strength remains in its introductory stages. It is clear that muscle strength is a highly complex and variable function that depends on a large number of factors. It is not surprising, therefore, that large differences in strength exist not only between individuals, but even within the same individual tested repeatedly on a given piece of equipment. The issue is compounded by the fact that correlations of strength among different muscle groups in the same individual are generally low, and tests of isometric strength do not necessarily reflect the strength an individual might exhibit in a dynamic test. As a result of these and other influences, great care needs to be exercised in designing, evaluating, reporting, and interpreting muscular strength assessments. Traditionally, tests of muscular strength were in the domain of the orthopaedist, physical therapist, and exercise physiologist. Such tests are also an important tool for the ergonomist, however, because of the high strength demands on workers in manual materials-handling tasks. In some cases, task demands may approach or even exceed the strength that an individual is voluntarily willing to exert in a test of strength. In such cases, evidence suggests that the likelihood of injury is significantly greater than when the task demands lie well within an individual's strength capacity. Because the relationship among strength capabilities, job demands, and musculoskeletal injury has been established, it is apparent that tests of muscular strength may benefit the ergonomist both in designing jobs and in ensuring that individuals have sufficient strength to safely perform physically demanding jobs. Several strength assessment techniques have been employed for these purposes, each possessing unique characteristics and applicability to job design and worker selection procedures. Our main purpose has been to elucidate these strengths and weaknesses, so that tests of strength may be properly applied in designing jobs and selecting workers. One of the crucial points we have emphasized is that any test of strength used in job design or worker selection must be directly related to the demands of the job.(1) For example, if an occupational lifting task has a high dynamic component, a test of isometric strength is not likely to provide the data necessary for proper design of the job. Of course, dynamic strength tests would also be misapplied in assessing a job requiring isometric exertions. Another potential pitfall is using tests of strength on isolated muscle groups and assuming that they are indicative of whole-body strength. For example, one might mistakenly assume that dynamic trunk extension strength represents a person's capability to perform a lifting task. However, an individual's lifting capacity may be entirely unrelated to trunk extension strength. It may, instead, be limited by an individual's arm or leg strength, depending on the task being performed. A final point on strength assessment should be made. The Bureau of Mines used a high-temperature rotational viscometer to test basic oxygen furnace slags to determine fluorspar requirements and to evaluate colemanite and fused boric acid as substitute fluidizers. A continuous technique of viscosity measurement was adapted to better determine the viscosity-temperature profiles of volatile fluorspar slags. Criteria used for estimating slag fluidizer effectiveness were (1) the apparent solidification temperature, and (2) the temperature range of slag crystallization. Colemanite and fused boric acid in high-basicity slag were superior fluidizers to fluorspar when compared on the basis of boron versus fluorine concentration. Fused boric acid was nearly equivalent to ceramic-grade fluorspar when compared on a simple weight basis, while colemanite was inferior to fluorspar. Fluorspar slags volatilized fluorine during viscosity testing. Colemanite and fused boric acid slags were stable, no boron losses being detected. A fluidizing limit was found for fluorspar at 2.9 percent fluorine concentration; higher concentrations impaired viscosity and caused foaming and crusting of slag. Concentrations of boron up to 4.4 percent resulted in very fluid slags with no fluidizing limit.

"INTRODUCTION Manufacturers and consumers of steel have come to realize during the past few years that cleanliness is of great importance in steels which must meet rigid specifications for various physical properties. Of equal importance is the consistent production of steel which is uniform in these properties. For maximum utility steels should be uniform not only from heat to heat, but also from ingot to ingot and within each ingot. In the manufacture of killed steels such as the higher carbon forging grades, uniformity as indicated by the usual chemical analysis in easy to obtain, provided that a normal top discard is taken, as is always the case in steels poured with hot—top practice. No such uniformity, however, holds true for the nonmetallic matter, which consists for the most part of the products of deoxidation of the steel.For a large tonnage of steels which go into articles manufactured by deep—drawing processes, killed steel has never been successfully applied because with the present deoxidation practice, low—carbon killed steel is almost invariably extremely dirty. To obtain the desired qualities for deep drawing, the steel is rimmed, — that is to say, deoxidized with manganese and perhaps a small amount of aluminum, — the resultant product being of high purity in the skin of the ingot, but very badly segregated at the center of the ingot, particularly in the upper—central section. This segregation necessitates a very heavy top discard, and one of the major segregates is carbon which renders the steel too hard to draw properly. If clean, low—carbon killed steel could be made successfully, much better ingot yields would be obtained than by the present rimming steel practice. Furthermore, banded structures and outside and inside seams, which are undoubtedly due in a large measure to blowholes in the ingot, are defects which are very difficult to control in rimmed steel. These defects would be minimized by clean killed steel."

The mining methods and practices used at the Young zinc mine, American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, have resulted in a low-cost, high-yield operation. Zinc ore (sphalerite) occurs in limes tone- dolomi te beds of the Kingsport Formation and is mined by modified room and pillar method. Utilizing trackless mining equipment which incorporates a high degree of flexibility, this operation has had a steady increase in productivity.

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). In the case of flavoenzymes, Cr(V) formation is accompanied by the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The Cr(V) species then reduces H20 2 to generate •OH radicals and Cr(VI) (16).To understarid the mechanism by which Cr(V}-generated ·OH radicals cause cytotoxicity, Aiyar et al. Before and during World War II, the Bureau of Mines investigated a large number of ore deposits in the United States and Alaska in a search for domestic sources of strategic minerals. Deposits chosen for development included those expected to contain metals of importance in the successful prosecution of the war. This report describes the work performed and results obtained in developing the Daggett Chief manganese deposit near Manila, Daggett County, Utah (fig. 1), during 1941. The work comprised mapping and a study of the geology by the Federal Geological Survey, and bulldozer and hand trenching, sinking of two shafts, and sampling by the Bureau of Mines. Work was started April 17, 1941, and was completed June 28, 1941. Two bulk samples for metallurgical testing were taken.

Dissociation and vaporization of gold chlorides and bromides were investigated by a static pressure method and by Knudsen cell mass spectrometer. Two distinct chlorine and three distinct bromine pressure-temperature relation-ships were observed for the respective salts. The chlorine pressures are attributed to the dissociation of Au2Cl6 and Au2C12, and the bromine pressures to the dissociation of Au2Br6, Au2Br4, and AU2Br2, These pressure-temperature relationships were used to calculate dissociation pressure equations, enthalpies, and entropies of dissociation for each salt. Mass analysis of the vapors over AU2Cls between 83° and 152° C confirmed the existence of gaseous AU2C16. Ionization potential of this molecule is 11.0±0.1 ev and enthalpy of vaporization is 28.l±2.0 kcal/mole. Mass analysis of the vapors over the gold bromides detected only Bra in the temperature range 15°-150° C.

The explosion hazard of methane-air mixtures has become an increasingly serious mine planning problem, and an advance assessment of methane gas potential can therefore be essential for a safe and economic mine development pro- gram. As part of its coal mine health and safety program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, inexpensive test to measure the methane content of coal samples obtained from exploration cores. The gas content of coal per unit weight as determined by the direct method test can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if degasification of the coalbed in advance of mining should be considered. Since the Bureau began measuring the gas content of coal samples in 1972, experience has led to equipment and procedural changes, the most significant of which has been the development of a ball mill for crushing the coal sample to release the residual gas at the end of the desorption test period. This revised procedure replaces the crushing box and graphical methods described in earlier Bureau publications. The results of 583 direct method tests are summarized in tabular form. These results include data on the gas content of 125 coalbeds in 15 States.

As part of its efforts to devise new and improved methods for recovering lithium from unconventional resources , the Bureau of Mines investigated a lime -gypsum- roast , water- leach technique for processing lithiumenriched ( 0.01-0.68 pct Li ) clays . This report presents the results of a study of the technical feasibility of extracting lithium from raw material representative of clay beds associated with the McDermitt Caldera complex in Nevada and Oregon . prepared from water used Pellets suitable for bench-scale roasting studies were mixtures of minus 200 -mesh clay , limestone , and gypsum , with as the pelletizing agent . Roasting pelletized charges at 900 ° to 1,000° C temperatures for 1- to 4-h periods produced calcines that leached readily , yielding water - soluble lithium sulfate ( Li₂SO4 ) . A 5-3-3 ( weight ratio ) mix of clay , limestone , and gypsum produced calcines with the best leaching characteristics . More than 91 pct of the contained lithium was extracted from pelletized mix batches roasted in covered refractory boats . Lithium recovery decreased to about 87 pct when the mix was roasted under dynamic conditions in a gas - fired rotary furnace . A reaction mechanism was postulated which indicated that dilution and loss of SO2 and oxygen in the combustion exhaust adversely affected the leachability of the dynamically roasted calcine .

The experimental work described in this report is part of a continuing study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the fundamental physical processes involved in breaking rock with explosives. Six explosives were tested for their strain-producing abilities in a dolomitic marble. The explosives selected for testing had a tenfold variation in detonation pressure and a fivefold variation in characteristic impedance (product of loading density and rate of detonation). Strain pulses produced by the detonation of small charges of the explosives were recorded at distances of 5 to 130 feet. Peak strain, ?, was found to decrease with distance, R, in accordance with an exponential propagation law previously determined for other rock types, namely ? = (K/R)e ?aR The absorption constant, a, did not vary significantly with the explosive and was of the same order of magnitude as that for other rock types. The different explosives produced a fivefold variation in the value of the intercept constant, K.

[THE COMPOUNDS of strontium were confused with those of barium until 1790, when A. Crawford discovered that the mineral strontianite, long believed to be a barium mineral, was a compound of a new element. This discovery was confirmed 2 years later by I. C. Hope. The mineral was named strontianite because it was found near the town of Strontian in Argyllshire, Scotland. In 1808 Sir Humphrey Davy isolated strontium metal by the electrolysis of fused chlorides. Celestite (strontium sulfate) and strontianite (strontium carbonate) are the principal strontium minerals. Because of its more widespread occurrence, celestite is more important commercially.]

As part of an investigation aimed at improving the health and safety and competitiveness of the mining industry, the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the application of common offset radar profiling, using a 250-MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system, for the detection of fractures in igneous rock. A series of radar reflection surveys were conducted to detect and delineate the extent of fracturing at various granodiorite and gabbro quarries and outcrops located in Minnesota. The application of radar profiling for detecting joints, sheeting fractures, shear zones, and depth to water table was demonstrated to be feasible with minimal processing. Radar reflection interpretations were verified by visual inspection of the rock mass and field mapping of local structure. The radar reflection section provides a simple, rapid, and cost-effective means for mapping of shallow (less than 10 m) small-scale fractures (greater than 0.25 cm) in igneous rock masses (characteristic of velocities between 0.061 m/ns for gabbro and 0.125 m/ns for granodiorite). Depth or distance estimates to fractures are within 10 pct of the actual, and time-shift compensation is necessary only when topographic irregularities exceed 30 cm.
