The operation described herein differs from the usual practice in the Tri-State district in two important respects: (1) the ore is loaded into cars which are tramped to the shaft and hoisted on self-dumping cages, and (2) about 30 per cent of the ore is loaded by power shovels. The four-month period covered by the cost data appended at the end of the paper immediately followed a period of about one year during which the mine was shut down, and the expense incident to the resumption of operations is reflected in the costs. The author acknowledges the assistance of C. F. Jackson, mining engineer, U. S. Bureau of Mines, in the preparation of this paper and the compilation of the data.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed available data on the effect of crushing high-sulfur coals for the liberation of impurities in the light of increasingly stringent air pollution regulations. The survey, which provided information on Appalachian region coals only, indicated that such important coal-beds as the Upper and Lower Freeport and the Upper Kittanning show significant sulfur reductions when crushed to 14-mesh top size. For many other coalbeds amenability to sulfur liberation by crushing was indicated, although too few samples were available to draw firm conclusions,

"A convective dispersion model has been utilized to calculate the real-time airborne dust concentration in mine airways using re-entrainment as the only source term for airborne dust. It incorporates two important sources of re-entrainment in mines -- air velocity and movement of objects. The model has a sink term accounting for the deposition of particles along the airway. The model is solved using a finite difference scheme which is coded for computer. The computer model outputs airborne respirable and total dust concentrations along the airway as a function of time. The real-time and average gravimetric concentrations from several in-mine experiments were compared with the results from the simulation of the experimental conditions. This model can be used for estimating airborne dust entrainment due to air velocity, equipment movement, and persons walking. INTRODUCTIONEdwards and Ford (1988) developed a model for coal dust explosion suppression and utilized a predetermined value of threshold velocity for flowing air to pick up dust from floor. Depending on the strength of the removal forces, re-entrainment can increase the airborne dust concentration in mine airways. The most prevalent forces causing re-entrainment in mine airways are the drag and lift forces due to flowing air, and removal forces due to the movement of persons and vehicles. Shankar and Ramani (1991) have investigated the unique characteristics of the re-entrainment phenomenon in mine airways. Experiments on re-entrainment of coal dust particles were conducted in mine airways, and in a wind tunnel (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a, and 1994b). The results from the two experimental studies were found to compare well (Shankar and Ramani, 1995). There is no reported model to determine the airborne dust concentrations due to airflow or persons walking under conditions existing in mines. The present study is a part of a continuing research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust on the spatial and temporal behavior of airborne dust in mine airways (Ramani, 1983)."

IN a Nation-wide appraisal of coking-coal reserves and of the feasibility of expanding them by upgrading marginal coals, it is natural that the Pittsburgh region of Pennsylvania should be considered first. Here, where the American iron and steel industry started, the Pittsburgh coal bed is of paramount importance. The use of coke in iron blast furnaces is said to have begun with the discovery that good blast-furnace fuel could readily be made by a simple method of coking Pittsburgh coal. To the present time, the prosperity of the steel industry has depended largely on utilization of this great coal reserve and the cheap transportation afforded by the Monongahela River system. OBJECT AND SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION The initial project in the study of upgrading marginal coking coals was laid out in this area, which contains large reserves of Pittsburgh coal contiguous to the Monongahela and its navigable tributaries. Much of the Pittsburgh coal remaining here is known to have a high sulfur content. The problem of reducing the sulfur to meet metallurgical requirements already has received much attention, and it is considered to be one of the most difficult technologic problems in the field of coal washing.

Graphite is chemically identical with diamond, both being crystallized allotropic forms of carbon. Graphite obviously differs greatly from diamond in physical properties and is easily recognized by its blackness, its softness (1 to 2 on Mohs' scale), and its slick feel when rubbed between the fingers. Strictly speaking, all graphite is crystalline, but grades in which the individual grains cannot be distinguished with the naked eye are commercially classed as amorphous. Natural mixtures of the two varieties occur in all proportions, and the classification of a given sample as "amorphous" or "crystalline" graphite is based largely upon trade practice. Until recently different varieties of vegetable or animal charcoal, lamp black, soot, gas carbon, and coal ware considered strictly amorphous, but modern examination by X-ray methods indicates that even these materials possess the same internal crystalline structure as graphite, differences in physical properties being perhaps explained by porosity or presence of combined hydrogen or other impurities.

"Respirable high-silica particles from four coal mines. a clay mine and a tunnelling site were analysed for silicon vs aluminum composition by performing scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS) at electron accelerating voltages of 20 kiloelectron volts (keV). The same particles were analysed at 5 keV to determine possible differences in surface vs bulk composition. In some cases high-silica particles exhibited a decrease in the ratio of silicon to aluminium K-alpha line intensities with decreasing electron beam accelerating voltage. This behaviour is consistent with aluminosilicate surface contamination or occlusion of a silica particle. Some 20 high-silica particles were analysed from each of 10 samples. Powdered aluminosilicate glass was used as a control for the behaviour of silica with a homogeneous distribution of aluminium in the particle. Significant differences were found between the control and sample means for an Illinois bituminous coal mine dust, two western and one central Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine dust low-temperature ashes. and a clay mine and mill dust sample, but not for an anthracite coal mine dust and two central Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine dust low-temperature ashes. INTRODUCTIONRESPIRABLE dust quartz content commonly is measured on bulk samples by using i.r. spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction. For research purposes, individual particle-by particle SEM-EDS analysis at 20-30 keV electron beam accelerating potential may be used also. Such measurements have not provided an unambiguous association of quartz content with occupational pulmonary disease prevalence in exposed workers (WALTON et al., 1977). Rather, there is evidence that coal rank modifies the relationship between dust exposure and pneumoconiosis development (WAL TON et al., 1977; ROBOCK and BAUER, 1990; ATTFIELD and MORRING, in press). SEM-EDS analysis was performed to measure the silicon fraction, Si/(Si +Ai), at 20 and at 5 keV on high-silica particles to determine if some respirable quartz particles generated by mining exhibit heterogenous composition with depth (WALLACE et al., 1990), which might affect the bioavailability of the quartz surface."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the absorption of radium and thorium from waste uranium leach liquor by clays and other materials. This work was conducted in support of the Bureau's goal of minimizing the environmental conflicts, impacts, and occupational hazards associated with mining and milling operations. Tailing and soil samples from New Mexico were evaluated for their potential to absorb radium and thorium from tailing liquors. Absorption ranged from 0 to 97 pct for radium and 0 to 60 pct for thorium. Some samples that readily absorbed radium were contacted with various salt solutions that could be present in tailing solutions to determine whether desorption would be a potential problem. The desorption of radium ranged from 0 to 75 pct. An alpha spectrometric method was used to determine the radium and thorium concentrations in the solutions and solids.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines began a broad program of exploration of various proportion in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in the fall of 1943. As a part of this project, exploring was done at theLittle Pittsburg property in 1945. The work included driving a 500-foot crosscut from the No, 6 level and drilling four diamond core drill holes to test the behavior of the Little Pittsburg vein at depth. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "The evolution during oxidation of the internal structure of soot and carbon black particles was studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and an image analysis system. Increasing ordering to the carbon structure with increasing oxidation is observed. Measures of the increased order are increases in the fractional coverage of a cross section of the particles with a layered structure, a decrease in the mean interlayer spacing, and a decrease in the spread of the interlayer spacing. The changing structure of the carbon black impacts its properties, such as the rate of oxidation.There is considerable interest in the study of the structural changes of carbonaceous materials as a function of oxidation. Davis et al.1 measured the variation of carbon dioxide surface area of various coals as a function of residence time in a flow reactor. HRTEM measurements revealed that crystallite dimensions and interlayer spacings are altered by combustion. Ishiguro et al.2 showed that oxidation alters the structure of diesel soot. The aim of our current research is to develop a better understanding of the microstructural reordering of carbon blacks with implications to their properties. The carbon blacks used in this research have already been studied and their reactivities as a function of oxidation measured.3The methodology used in this work has already been described in detail elsewhere.4 This paper presents an application to quantify the structural changes of carbon black particles as a function of oxidation and graphitization. The technique used is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, chars, etc., possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure. The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic5 or as crumpled sheets6 to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of electron micros¬copy in studying the morphology of such materials has been well established,2,7,8 although only a few attempts toward quantification have been made.The sample observed was carbon black CB330 from De¬gussa. One set of carbon black samples were oxidized in a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) in air at 575 0C, so that the conversion varied from 0 to 96%. Another set of carbon black samples were graphitized (Graphpac-GB by ALLTECH) and then oxidized in the TGA at 680 °C until 92% burnout was reached. The latter samples are called GB 0% and GB 92%, respectively.For the HRTEM observation a small portion of each sample was ultrasonically dispersed in ethanol. The suspension was deposited dropwise on a copper TEM grid coated with a lacey carbon film. The examination of the samples was carried out on areas that extend over the holes in the supporting film in order to avoid interference from the amorphous carbon background film An oriented gold crystal was used as a calibration standard and subjected to the same techniques as the carbon black samples."

As a part of the program of the Rare and. Precious Metals Experiment Station, Reno, Nev., in connection with investigations of treatment methods for precious and precious-base metal ores, to further conservation and recovery of precious and base metals, tests Were made on samples from the Buzzard Mine, located in the vicinity of Placerville, Calif. These samples represented ore exposed during previous development work, in tunnels and a shaft on the property, including highly oxidized material from the surface zone and sulfide ores from depths of 150 to 300 feet. The surface samples contained little base metal and only enough gold 80 that economic exploitation of them would depend on development of a large tonnage of ore, low-cost mining methods, and satisfactory treatment methods. The sulfide samples were valuable enough to warrant further exploration and development and, if present in suitable tonnage, the installation of a treatment plant for recovery of both precious and base metals. The oxidized surface-zone samples carried 0.11 to 0.14 ounce gold per ton. Standard amalgamation and flotation tests of these samples gave low recoveries. Standard cyanidation tests indicated high consumption of lime and cyanide and gold extraction of 79.4 and 82.7 percent. Water-leaching the ore after crushing to minus 10-mesh improved cyanidation considerably. Ex-tractions of 82.7 to 85.8 percent were obtainec1 with lime consumption of 6 to 7 pounds per ton of ore and cyanide consumptions of 1 to 4 pounds. Grinding the samples to minus 200-mesh followed by water-leaching and cyanidation gave improved extractions of 91-92 percent of the gold, but with slightly increased consumptions of lime and cyanide.

Coal-mine officials and those who are preparing to become officials should be familiar with the instruments and devices that are employed rather commonly in and around mines and should know how to use them with safety and efficiency. Among these axe instruments and devices used in determining the pressure, velocity, volume, and certain other conditions of ventilation and in detecting the more common mine gases, such as methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide, or a deficiency of that very important agent, oxygen. Water gages, anemometers, barometers, psychrometers, flame safety lamps, lamp-testing boxes, and methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide detectors are described and their use and operation discussed in this paper.

From the most remote periods of civilization stone has been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns), or single markers, to great obelisks and pyramids or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1650 at an estimated cost of $50,000,000 or more and is today an object of unusual interest for travelers. Other magnificent memorials both ancient and modern are to be found in many lands. No sharp line can be drawn between buildings and monuments, because the larger types of memorials such as the Bok Singing Tower, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and mausoleums of various types have features in common with buildings. However, great care must be exercised in selecting a site for a quarry that will produce acceptable monumental stone because appearance as well as quality is of prime importance. The deposit must be of uniform texture and attractive color and must be notably free of knots, hairlines, impurities, incipient seams, or other defects. Many memorials are of polished stone, and spots or streaks that might be virtually Invisible on a natural rock face will appear distinctly on a polished surface. Hence, stone to be polished must be selected with unusual care. However, less flawless stone may be used for hammered surfaces.

A high-speed streak camera method for making equation of state measurements (shock and particle velocities) on samples of rock under dynamic load conditions is described. Experimental data are given for tests on 12 samples representing 5 rock types. Analysis of these data shows that the method is practical and that good reproducibility of results can be obtained. The pressure range covered in the tests was from 1 to 50 kilobars.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the integrity of the existing shutoff valves and actuators used under high-temperature conditions in the Bureau of Mines&apos; horizontal borehole methane drainage pipe- line system and to determine the potential for improvement in the system. In the field tests, both fire-safe ball valves and standard brass ball valves were initially subjected to a 30-min pan fire without thermal protection. Neither valve could maintain line pressure beyond 11 min in a fire that reached temperatures between 500° and 700° C. Based on the test results, it was concluded that the brass ball valve used in the Bureau&apos;s methane drainage pipeline system can be retrofitted with an inexpensive "fire bag" to substantially increase its integrity under mine fire conditions.

This report abstracts project work performed under USBM Grant GO155003 during the period 4 November 1975 to 3 November 1976. The research was funded, as a continuance of previous support from USBM Grants GO133077 and G0155003, to gain further knowledge in mine electrical system safety. Five reports have been separately produced, all under the grant title, "Coal Mine Electrical System Evaluation," and are as follows: 1. Volume I - Continuous Monitoring, 2. Volume II - Transient Analysis, 3. Volume III - Shielded Cables, 4. Volume IV - Computer Modeling, and 5. Volume V - Battery and Battery-charging Safety. Abstracts of these comprise the balance of this document with one exception. The task ?d-c offsett currents," does not fall under the scope of the other report volumes and, further, the material to be presented does not justify a separate report. Hence, this subject concludes the Executive Summary.

Roasting research involving small , batch experiments was conducted to explore the use of solid reductants for converting nonmagnetic iron ore to a magnetic type . Three typical Minnesota ores were tested with one or more of the following reductants : Lignite , lignite chars , anthracite , bituminous coal , petroleum coke , peat , and pyrite . Reductive roasting was accomplished in a 3- by 4- inch externally heated rotating drum . Ore and reductant were placed in the drum and heated to a desired temperature , which was maintained for a predetermined period . Recoveries of over 90 percent of the iron in magnetic concentrates were achieved at 650 ° C , using lignite , some lignite chars , a high- volatile bituminous coal , peat , and pyrite . Pyrite is a novel reductant , which is superior to carbonaceous materials other than lignite and some chars .

Calcareous rocks, of which the principal varieties are marble and lime¬stone, are used extensively for building and ornamental purposes. Onyx and travertine, subdivisions of these groups, are sufficiently distinctive in origin and use to merit separate classification. The purpose of this paper is to define the terms "onyx" and "travertine" and to describe the occurrences and uses of the materials bearing these names. ORIGIN AND CHARACTER Confusion exists in the use of the word "onyx." True onyx is a banded chalcedony, a form of silicon dioxide related to jasper, agate, and flint. Calcium carbonate is commonly deposited from solution in successive layers of varying color closely resembling onyx, and for this reason such calcareous rock is also called "onyx." The possibility of chemical analysis by identification of characteristic X-ray spectral lines was first suggested by H. C. J. Moseley in 1913.3/ For a given spectral series it was found that the frequency of the characteristic radiation was proportional to the square of the atomic number of the excited atom. Siegbahn and his coworkers improved the instrumentation and accurately determined the wavelengths of the characteristic spectra for most of the elements .4/ In fluorescent X-ray spectroscopy, the characteristic X-rays of atoms are emitted or fluoresced upon absorption of primary or incident X-rays of shorter wave-lengths (higher energies). The K spectral lines are used for elements of atomic numbers 13 to about 63, and the L series for those above atomic number 50. Whether the K or L lines are used for elements 50-63 depends upon the type of instrumentation available. The laboratory at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., uses the K lines up to atomic number 57 and the L lines for thong elements of higher atomic number.

Research conducted over the past 20 years in France, Great Britain, and the United States on the use of the large-hole burn cut has established cer¬tain advantages for this system. Advantages include longer pull and more complete fragmentation from blast rounds. However, research is needed to establish a set of parameters for optimum performance. As part of the Bureau of Mines Advancing Mining Technology for Marginal Resources program, the Twin Cities Mining Research Center, Twin Cities, Minn., acquired a horizontal rotary drill capable of boring holes up to 24 in. in diameter. This was used for a series of underground experiments at White Pine mine, White Pine, Mich., during 1973. Exceptional results were obtained with a 12-1/4-in void hole that yielded up to 18 ft of pull in a 10- by 20-ft drift, Fragmentation was excellent, and the compactness of the muck pile facilitated loading.
