Zincor uses O2 enrichment (up to 26% O2 in the fluidizing air) to increase the processing rate of zinc concentrates in the fluidized bed roasters. The aim of this study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining current roaster feed rates and calcine quality. It was found that, with a load of 20% micro-pellets introduced into the feed blend, that O2 enrichment could be reduced by 60%. It was determined that entrained particles spend on average between 0.46 hour and 2.44 hour in the roaster, compared to particles remaining between 3.93 hour and 4.00 hour in the bed overflow. This compares well with a radioactive tracer test performed by Spira. The required reaction time for micro-pellets was found to be less than the residence time inside a Zincor roaster. The result achieved indicated that the average particle residence time inside the roaster was increased successfully in order to compensate for the longer reaction time required to roast micro-pellets at lower levels of O2 in the fluidizing air.

The potential benefits of implementing the Last Planner System (LPS) on mining infrastructure projects were explored through two case studies in the South African mining industry. The first part of the study involved measurement of the impact of LPS through earned value techniques on secondary project data. The second part sought to establish the lean construction success factors leading to improvements in construction performance. This was done by means of a research questionnaire distributed to the project owner’s teams, contracted parties, and the LPS facilitators. The results revealed a positive correlation between LPS application and planned percentage complete. However, the performance achieved during the LPS pilot was not sustained. The success factors and benefits considered most evident in the case study pilot differed among the three stakeholder groups. The findings are expected to guide construction stakeholders to better define performance measures and focus on factors required to make LPS implementation more effective in the South African mining sector.

"SynopsisCapital cost estimates are important in decisions on whether a project will be approved, mothballed, or abandoned. In South Africa, junior coal miners do not have extensive databases of historical projects from which to estimate capital costs. The purpose of this paper is to establish formulae that can be used for estimating capital costs of developing coal mines in a coal-producing country, using South Africa as a case study. The costs are estimated to an error of magnitude level of -30% to +50%, which is suitable for a concept study level, using a parametric estimation technique. The study uses data from completed coal mining projects from selected coal-producing countries. Three formulae are developed and presented for estimating capital costs of underground bord and pillar, surface shovel and truck, and dragline operations.IntroductionCapital cost estimates play a critical role in deciding whether projects will proceed, be delayed, or abandoned. It is therefore important that capital cost estimates are carried out accurately as determined by the estimation guidelines based on the level of estimation conducted (Shafiee and Topal, 2012). The lack of literature on estimation of capital costs in many coal mining countries is adversely affecting junior coal miners, since they do not have an extensive database of historical projects on which to base estimations. In South Africa, the difficulty in estimating capital costs is attributable to lack of publicly available data on completed South African mining projects (Hall, 2013)."

This paper describes research done to remove apatite (phosphorus) from hematite ultrafine (70% finer than 25 micron) concentrate, recovered by electromagnetic separators at the FST Tailing Recovery Plant located in Chadormalu Iron Ore Complex through reverse froth flotation. As a result, iron and phosphorus content in magnetic concentrate (flotation feed) were 53.52% and 0.58%, respectively. Therefore, to increase the Fe content and decrease the P content of the sample, reverse flotation tests were applied. Chemical reagents used in this research consisted of sodium silicate as a depressant, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate as pH regulators, Alke & Dirol as fatty acid collectors and MIBC as frother. Process parameters including dosages of collectors, depressant and frother, preparation times of depressant and collectors, steps and time of frothing and pH range were selected. After doing flotation tests, in optimum condition, dosages of collectors were 1200 g/t, depressant 1200 g/t, pH in the range of 9.5 to 10, preparation time of collectors in the first step was eight minutes and at the other steps, four minutes; the number of frothing steps 4 and frothing time in each stage was three minutes. In this case, it was observed that the amount of phosphorus in the final concentrate was reduced to 0.05%, the Fe content increased from 53.52% to 61.66% and the Fe recovery achieved was 82.21%. Attachment of collectors containing thioamide groups to sulfide minerals is interpreted as interaction between NH-acids and sulfides acting as solid bases with the formation of a donor–acceptor reagent–mineral bond. As the acid function of the reagents increases, their sorption optimum is observed to shift to a less alkaline region. The developed concept has enabled us to propose a method for calculating optimal pH values for the sorption of reagents on mineral surfaces depending on the acidity of the reagents and the pH value of the medium. Our estimates correlate well with the experimental data. We studied the spectra of the reagents containing thioamide groups and the spectra of copper salts and their surface compounds on an oxidised copper film, chalcopyrite, and pyrite using the infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Some effective applications are described of reagents containing thioamide groups in the flotation of copper, copper-molybdenum, and gold ores, both separately and in combination with other collectors. It is shown that the flotation performance is maximised by adding two- and three-component collector combinations, including collectors containing thioamide groups. In this case, the increase in the recovery of copper, molybdenum, and gold is up to 2-5% compared to conventional process conditions. A new, high-performing reagent containing a thioamide group is proposed. A commercial pilot batch of the reagent was produced and sent for flotation tests in gold ore applications. In block cave mining, rock fragmentation is a key parameter that influences the production level design and mine planning. Fragmentation occurs mainly by natural breakage during the caving process and in the draw column. The breakage that occurs within the column is known as secondary fragmentation. Secondary fragmentation has been successfully described using the block caving comminution model, which replicates the fragmentation mechanics between particles under drawn and vertical loads in a draw column. This model is based on a kinetic and population balance approach, in which non-normalized and normalized assumptions can be used depending on material and comminution system behaviour. In this paper, the non-normalized and normalized approaches are applied and compared to laboratory data to determine which assumption should be used for secondary breakage in block caving. Approaches are compared graphically, with the mean square error and the Fisher test with a false-rejection probability of 0.05. Based on a statistical analysis, the results show that the normalized model can be applied to all the rock types tested.

"Coal pillars are prone to scaling over time, and are progressively reduced in size and consequently subjected to increased load and reduced strength. The effective factor of safety therefore reduces. Databases of failed and stable pillars cannot, therefore, be regarded as definitive.More than a decade has passed since the first attempt to predict the lifespan of pillars. This paper presents a review based on the new database and pillar strength equations. The methodology for the analysis is based on the fact that pillars scale. The ultimate safety factor (defined as the ratio between strength and load at the time of failure) is derived, followed by an estimate of the rate of pillar scaling, which results in an estimate of the expected time of failure.It is suggested that the predicted lifespan should not be used as an absolute indicator of expected pillar life, but rather as an index – the pillar life index (PLI) – to complement the safety factor and related probability of failure when evaluating pillar stability. A pillar with a predicted lifespan of less than 500 years would be regarded as being in danger of imminent collapse, while a lifespan of at least 1 000 years should be required for long-term purposes.The differences between this analysis and that published in 2003 constitute a strong case for regular reviews of all the empirically based stability indicators, namely the safety factor, probability of failure, and the PLI. Reviews at 10 year intervals appear to be required.The constants in the proposed method are valid only for the Witbank No. 1, 2 and 4 seams and the Highveld No. 2 and 4 seams.IntroductionIt is well known that over time, coal pillars are prone to scaling, and thus are progressively reduced in size and consequently subjected to increased load and reduced strength. The effective factor of safety therefore reduces and it is quite possible for failure to occur after a long time interval. In fact, scrutiny of the database of failed pillars indicates that failure occurred after periods ranging from 2 to 49 years, and not immediately after mining.The factor of safety for pillars at the time of failure is not the same as that immediately after mining. The concept of the safety factor is based on the pillar strength obtained by statistical analysis of pillar dimensions immediately, or within a month after mining, when the surveys are conducted. Strictly speaking, the safety factor as commonly used is valid only immediately after mining, and it continues to reduce thereafter. The ideal situation would be to base analyses of pillar strength on pillar dimensions at the time of failure, but that is simply not possible because the real dimensions cannot be measured at that time."

A copper-gold project has required a number of trade-off studies underpinned by test work to settle on pragmatic flowsheets and throughputs to support a pre-feasibility study that provides a compelling financial case. The primary trade-off studies were based on the mine schedule, ore type feed-grade recovery relationships, likely concentrate grades and typical marketing terms as well as the estimated capital and operating costs for a range of throughputs and mining strategies. Secondary trade-off studies were conducted for specific circuits and additional processing options. Although the details of these studies are not presented, the technical options and subsequent flowsheets are discussed. While the flowsheets will be optimised during the feasibility study stage, the basis is now fixed for the four ore types that would be mined from the copper-gold orebody. The ore types, resulting from a strong weathering profile, exhibit a wide range of copper mineralisation and gold associations, as well as gangue types. They display a range of characteristics that necessitated a nuanced approach to flowsheet development. The primary separation techniques that have been employed include gravity, classification, flotation and leaching while a range of comminution methods have been selected to suit the properties of the ore types. While technical issues are important factors in terms of maximising the quality of separations, recoveries and revenues, attention to material handling, equipment characteristics, the mine schedule, and capital and operating costs are equally important considerations for settling upon a suitable and robust flowsheet. Definition of mineral resources and reserves forms the basis for effective mine planning and reliable public reporting of mineral assets. Historically the mineral resource and reserves declaration process has been the domain of the geology and surveying disciplines, with the declaration of the reserves by the surveyor being based on the application of modifying factors to the declared resources available for mining. As part of an ongoing process to improve efficiency, reliability, and reproducibility of results, this approach has been revised and enhanced through the introduction of a revised process and reconciliation tools. The revised approach to reserve definition is based on the definition of scheduled resources, at an appropriate confidence estimate in the context of an approved business plan, over the anticipated life of the mineral asset being applied to define reserves. This planning and scheduling is developed, during the annual business planning process, by the mine planning department using tools such as CADSMine?. The scheduled area together with the application of revised modifying factors is tabulated in the BME (basic mine equation) and reflects the mine production plan over time. Simplification of the modifying factors to dilution and losses underpins the simple yet robust approach to improved definition of reserves in this process and in the basic resource to reserve equation (BR2RE). Dilution intrinsically affects grade but not metal content, whereas the losses reflect both the efficiency of mining and planning and are reflected in metal losses, area losses, or both. Reconciliation of the derived ?resource converted to reserve? area, (which is based on the business plan from CADSMine?), versus the ?resource available for mining?, (which is derived from Datamine?), underpins the robustness and auditability of the reserves declaration. This R&R accounting and reconciliation approach is transparent and facilitates interrogation of the logic and rationale of long-term business planning and project strategy. These numbers are processed and reported in the logic of the basic resource equation (BRE), which also addresses aspects such as white areas (future and historic), tail management, and partial extraction (non-scheduled pillars, etc.) in compliance with SAMREC definitions. Areas that do not have the necessary confidence and data support to be declared as resources find their space as pre-resource (outside the domain of public reporting), outlining existing potential for future extraction and reporting. Use of the BRE leads ultimately to a complete, refined accounting and reconciliation-oriented approach for all production entities. The revised resource and reserve process includes the discipline of mine planning as intrinsic to the definition and declaration of resources and reserves. Subsequent to the change in process, the resources and reserves have truly become the domain of the mineral resource management discipline. This paper defines the logic of the basic resource equations and outlines their application in the definition and reconciliation of mineral resources and reserves at Anglo American Platinum Limited.

The study proposes the Ambidextrous Leadership-Technology Adoption (ALTA) model, which integrates leadership styles such as transformational, transactional, adaptive, and ambidextrous leadership into the technology adoption process. The model emphasizes the balance between exploration (fostering innovation) and exploitation (ensuring operational efficiency). The findings suggest that transformational leadership fosters innovation by encouraging risk-taking and creativity, while transactional leadership ensures efficient technology integration. The article also identifies key barriers to technology adoption, such as organizational resistance to change, which can be mitigated through adaptive leadership that addresses employee concerns. The research emphasizes the importance of a supportive organizational culture and cross-functional collaboration, which are essential for successful technology adoption. The study concludes by offering practical recommendations for leaders to foster a culture of innovation, manage resistance, and balance short-term efficiency with long-term technological advancement.

It is well known that carbon management is essential for minimising soluble gold losses in carbonin- leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits. Even so, carbon measurements remain predominantly a manual operation with a low amount of control and automation around CIL and CIP reactors. Carbon inventory, i.e. knowing the carbon concentration in each reactor, is crucial for good carbon management. CarbonSense, a novel in-situ measurement system, was therefore developed for continuous monitoring of the carbon concentration in each reactor and paves the way for more advanced control in gold operations. The carbon management and optimisation system is based on Outotec® HSC Sim dynamic process simulations where each process component is modelled in detail. Generated models are validated with real data from a particular operation. The simulator will allow for the carbon control sequence to be realistically tested and the efficiency optimised by controlling the feed and discharge pumps in a hazard- and risk-free process environment. Furthermore, by combining CarbonSense and Outotec® gold courier (online soluble gold measurements) continuous feed-forward and feedback information can be obtained. The optimiser will then define the best running parameters based on the cost function of gold production versus intrinsic factors such as utility costs and adsorption time. Eventually, the application can be installed parallel with a real process island and it can be continuously calibrated with real-time process data. The dynamic model will then create future predictions for the entire process island. The example case presents a CIL circuit, which is simulated using Outotec® HSC Chemistry Sim and operated through Outotec® ACT (Advanced Control Tool) application. DEM simulations were used in this research to study the screening process of a novel variable amplitude equal thickness vibration screen (VAETVS). The response regularity of mass distribution and granular moving velocity at the different screen panels to feed rate was investigated and the predictive model for the unit area processing load was proposed. The influence of aperture size, the size variance, and the opening ratio on the mass passing-distribution and overall screening performance, respectively, were revealed. The results showed that the response model of the unit area load Ф to the feed rate Q can be concluded as Ф∝0.324×Q. The moving velocity of particles also showed a positive relevance to the feed rate, besides which the passing rate of fine-grained material at the feed end was negatively related to the aperture size, while the case was reversed in the feed end. The increase of aperture variance AV enhanced the passing ability of small particles at the feed end,and reduced the misplaced ratio of the large particles at the discharge end. A better screening efficiency can be obtained when the average aperture size of the entire sieve is 7.5 mm, with the aperture variance of 1 mm between the adjacent panels. The near depletion of high-grade ores, among other factors, has necessitated the consideration of alternative PGM sources. Various factors in the metallurgical processing of ores result in valuable minerals being lost to the tailings, and hence, PGM tailings are a possible alternative PGM source. However, as the value residing in PGM tailings remains unquantified and uncharacterised, there is a challenge in knowing the recoverable fraction of value contained in PGM wastes. This paper outlines the in-situ techniques of oxygen uptake and EDTA extraction for their possible use for determining the recoverable value in PGM tailings. Coal is a complex mixture of organic and mineral constituents and is the most abundant resource of fossil energy in the world. In recent years, significant research into dry coal beneficiation has gained much attention, primarily due to the need to improve grades and reduce the environmental contaminants in coal without the use of water, and to achieve this in as cost-effective manner as possible, relative to wet beneficiation processes. This paper seeks to review the application of various electrostatic separators with their process principles, to draw comparisons between different dry beneficiation techniques with specific emphasis on the tribo-electrostatic separation method, and finally to report the results of tribo electrostatic separation conducted on various South African coals. Previous research conducted on Indian, European and American coals has indicated that this technique is likely to lead to significant economic benefit through the reduction of ash content, NOx and more specifically Sox by separating out the liberated Fe-S-bearing minerals prior to utilization. The removal of the latter suite of minerals is also likely to significantly reduce or eliminate the emissions of associated trace elements, including mercury and arsenic. The research results reported in this paper indicate that the rotary tribo-electrostatic process has the potential for significant upgrading of high ash pulverized South African coal. The impact of various operational parameters was investigated and key factors established for the optimum recovery of low ash and low sulphur fine coal.

FINANCE The annual accounts which are attached to this report show an excess of income over expenditure of R21 519. It is very gratifying to be able to report that Council's efforts to stop the depletion of our accumulated funds are meeting with success. The most important contributors to our surplus this year are symposia and colloquia, sales of publications, Company Affiliate subscriptions and the profit on the journal. While we do not expect continued profits from all these sources in the future we do feel that we are now in the process of accumulating a substantial financial foundation. This will give the Council the necessary confidence to initiate the new developments in the activities of the Institute which are now under consideration. The decision to create a new grade of membership, Company Affiliate, is dealt with elsewhere in this report. There has been a generous initial response from companies and this is the cornerstone of our improved financial expectations. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R91 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 502. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R9 160 to RH 331, which is R2 134 in excess of the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to RH 529 compared with R23 010 a year ago. MEMBERSHIP Sixteen Fellows, twenty Members, six Graduates, nine Associates, twelve Students and twenty-four Company Affiliates were elected during the year. There are two main types of densifying cyclones currently available in the market, namely polyeurethane (PU) and ceramic. The PU densifying cyclones are currently used throughout the Grootegeluk complex and coal beneficiation in general. It has been identified that PU densifiers wear relatively fast depending on the operating pressure and need to be replaced frequently as a result. The motivation for this paper is to achieve an increase in the densifying cyclone lifetime through less wear and an increase in efficiency resulting in the ability to build higher relative densities (RD) more quickly. This will allow for a reduction in downtimes due to replacing densifying cyclones as well as building RD and a reduction in the operating costs associated with replacing worn densifying cyclones. Some of the major findings of the study indicated that the ceramic cyclone theoretically undergoes less wear than the PU cyclone, but since wear is application-specific and was evaluated, the wear on the polyurethane cyclone was found to be minimal. The RD differential is higher on the PU cyclones than the ceramic cyclones, showing that the PU cyclones perform better in a densifying application. This is the first test conducted on this application and type of cyclones. It should therefore be noted that having the PU cyclone significantly outperform the ceramic cyclone was not expected, due to the only change being the material of construction. This is an indication to take the material of construction into account when selecting cyclones as it can have a significant impact on the cyclone performance in specific applications. "Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. "Platinum is a highly valuable resource, its safe and economic extraction is paramount. The success of platinum mining by the bord and pillar method depends heavily on a comprehensive and dependable pillar design method. Pillars need to be large enough to safely support the load and small enough to avoid loss of resources. A critical evaluation of current pillar design systems used in narrow-reef platinum mining was undertaken using practical experience from a large feasibility-stage platinum exploration project, supplemented by observations from several platinum mines in Zimbabwe. An extensive literature survey was undertaken in order to determine the current status of design systems. Through this approach, the shortcomings of current pillar design systems are highlighted. Areas are proposed for further research to obtain a better understanding on how additional factors influence pillar system stability. The exploration work highlighted how rock mass classification methods can be utilized in determining the overall strength of pillars. Current pillar design systems for narrow-reef platinum mining consider width-to-heightratio (usually with different exponents for width and height) and the strength of the pillar material. However, there are many more important factors that are not considered and which have a bearing on pillar system stability. An in-depth study of these parameters with a view to establish effective narrow- reef platinum mining pillar design systems needs to be undertaken. IntroductionPillars have been used as a means of support since the early days of mining. Pillarsupported mining methods such as bord and pillar require a reliable design system for them to be successful. This paper presents an evaluation of the current hard-rock mining pillar design systems as applied to a practical large-scale narrow-reef platinum mining feasibility study. It is vital to have a dependable pillar design system for economic and sustainable mining. Using an extensive database collected from the project, the pillar strength formulae were tested and several discrepancies noted. This necessitates the establishment of more reliable pillar design systems. In narrow-reef platinum mining, large compressive stresses accompanied by geological and geotechnical factors contribute to pillar instability. A well-formulated pillar design system is required that accounts for such factors so as to minimize pillar failures."
