This paper gives an overview of some criteria for the selection of processes for the recovery of lead and zinc from various raw materials and/or intermediate products. A glossary of possible processes and process variants, is presented and discussed, as well as the way in which these are interlinked. Recent developments in metallurgical process synthesis are also discussed, and the results produced by an eco-techno-.economic synthesis procedure for process routes in zinc metallurgy are given briefly. The way in which such a synthesis can complement a life-cycle assessment (LCA) of zinc-producing technologies is also described.

The comments by Mr Chaston were constructive and much appreciated. Considering firstly the recovery of cassiterite from fine deslimed material. A size distribution analysis shows that 58 per cent of cassiterite in Union Tin flotation concentrate reports in the minus 15 micron (quartz) size range. This is achieved at a recovery of 67 per cent and concentrate grade of 42,6 per cent. It is of interest to note that at Altenberg in East Germany 85 per cent of the tin in deslimed minus 43 micron material is recovered into a 14 to 16 per cent Sn concentrate using para-tolyl arsonic acid as collector. Reconcentration of this material is then carried out using two shaking table stages which recover 53 per cent of the tin in a 50 per cent Sn concentrate. Flotation was resorted to after recovery rates of 35 per cent and concentrate grade of 30 per cent had been achieved in a 275 ton per day plant comprising 130 tables. Tests on tabling of deslimed minus 43 micron material have not been carried out at Union Tin. The cost of equipment actually associated with cassiterite flotation amounts to about R60 000. The

Owing to the helical construction of the wires and strands in a triangular-strand rope, a torque is generated when the rope is restrained and tensioned. When a rope is suspended vertically, there is a load differential along its length due to the self weight of the rope. This load differential gives rise to an initial torque differential m the rope. Since the rope is constrained only at the conveyance and sheave wheel, the torque along its length must be constant ID order to maintain equilibrium, a variation in lay length occurs so that the lay length at the conveyance end decreases, and the lay length at the sheave end increases, from the manufactured state. The tension-torsion testing of steel-wire ropes is discussed, and it is shown how the results of the tests can be used to predict static in-shaft torsional behaviour. The expected changes in strand lay length in very deep shafts (deeper than 2500 m) are calculated, and the associated problems and of severe changes m lay length on rope endurance and safety are discussed. Examples of current in-service rope distortions such as kinks and corkscrews are shown.

Metal inventories are usually reported in financial statements of mining companies. However, the value of these inventories can be reliable only if the metals in stock are measured within acceptable tolerances. Reliable metal balancing requires accurate mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis. Many mining companies are usually unable to validate the accuracy of metals in inventories at the end of their financial year. This is mainly due to poor mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis practices. This has an adverse impact on metallurgical accounting and metal valuation. In addition, it puts a lot of stress on external auditors, who have the duty to recommend the approval of the financial statements to the board of directors. Although a full value chain of metal reconciliation includes the accuracy of Mineral Reserve definition and grade control at the mine, this paper discusses the implementation of best practices for mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis at processing plants. This is an important aspect of sampling and reconciliation that is required in order to improve the reporting of inventories in the financial statements of public mining companies. However, since the inception of these colleges, it has become clear that members of the public find the name difficult to use and to remember. Strategic minerals The National symposium on the availability of strategic minerals, which is being organized by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in collaboration with the Fellowship of Engineering, will be held at the London Press Centre, New Street Square, London EC4, on 20th and 21st November, 1979. The symposium has as its main objective consideration of those minerals that may pose problems of availability in the United Kingdom. Underwater mining The 10th Annual Underwater Mining Institute is scheduled for 1st to 3rd October, 1979, at Galveston, Texas. The Institute will be cosponsored by the Sea Grant College Programs of the University of Wisconsin and Texas A & M University and by the Marine Science Institute of the University of Texas it is being held in co-operation with the Association for Marine Mining. In 1978 the South African Coal Processing Society (SACPS), together with the Institute for Energy Studies of the Rand Afrikaans University, ran a school on coal processing. This was judged by both the organizers and the participants to have been extremely successful. As a result, it was decided to hold a second coal school in 1980. The proceedings of the Centenary Banquet that was held on Friday, 25 March 1994 at The Bal Room of The Carlton at 19:30 follow. Dr H. Scot-Russell The Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa-a forerunner of this Institute-was founded at a meeting held in Johannesburg on the 24th of March, 1894. One of the traditions established early in the life of the Society was the Annual Dinner, which became a major event in Johannesburg's social calendar. It was always attended by people of stature in the industry and in the community, and was usually addressed by a high-ranking Government figure. We are delighted that, on this one hundredth birthday of the Institute, we have been able to continue the tradition. I welcome you, Mr State President, and your charming wife, and we look forward to hearing your address later this evening.

The recovery of gold, uranium, and pyrite from accumulated residues at mines in the Orange Free State is adversely affected by the presence of pyrophyllite, which is naturally floatable and must be prevented from floating with the desired constituents by the use of a mica depressant, and of thucholite (uraniferous kerogen), which contains significant quantities of uranium and gold but does not float readily in the presence of a mica depressant. In laboratory tests on these residues, the use of a mixture of MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) and paraffin in addition to the suite of reagents normally used was found to increase the gold recovery substantially, but the sulphur grade was lower. The recovery of thucholite also increased considerably, but the proportion of uranium associated with this mineral was small. Plant trials, which are continuing, have been encouraging, indicating an increase in the gold recovery of 4,6 per cent.

BCL Limited operates a nickel-copper flash smelting operation at Selebi-Phikwe, situated in north-eastern Botswana. The original furnace was commissioned in 1973 and produces a high grade sulphide matte, from its own concentrates plus additional custom feeds, which is shipped to refineries in Zimbabwe and Norway for further processing. In 2004 the company embarked on a study to modernize the flash smelting complex, with an emphasis on extending campaign life, improving the furnace integrity and enhancing throughput and process efficiency. First phase initiatives from this exercise, including the fundamental switch to a single concentrate burner operation of the flash smelting furnace, were implemented in July 2007. This paper summarizes experiences prior to implementation, details the specific improvements made to the flash smelting furnace and associated operations, highlights the improved plant performance after modernization, and outlines second phase expansion plans that are currently under consideration.

Interpretation of Leached Outcrops, by Roland Blanchard. Published by Nevada Bureau of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada, 89507, 1968, 188 pages. Price $7.50 (R5.40). This book contains a summary of the author's knowledge of leached outcrops, derived from some 30 years' experience as a geologist operating mainly in the United States of America and Australia. Part 1 of the book provides a comprehensive coverage of the various processes and substances involved in the oxidation of many minerals, under different climatic conditions, to form the final leached products. In Part 2, details are given of the appearance and composition of the oxidation products of the following minerals: pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, cha1copyrite, cha1cocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, oxidized copper minerals, galena, cerussite, sphalerite, molybdenite, chromite, hematite, magnetite, manganite, pyrolusite, calcite, siderite, fluorite, salite and supergene silica. The illustrations, the black and white photographs and the colour plates of oxidation products are of a high standard. The material is presented in a logical order and in terms which are not over-technical; hence it is useful to persons other than trained geologists. Despite the advances in geophysical and geochemical prospecting, the location and interpretation of gossans remains an important method of discovering ore bodies, particularly so since the correct interpretation of a leached material can prevent the fruitless and expensive prospecting of an underlying body of uneconomic concentration. Therefore it is considered that this volume will be a valuable addition to the libraries of universities, exploration companies and geologists. It is of interest to note that the author, who died in 1966, presented a paper, under the same title as this book, to the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa in 1939. For this work he was awarded the Society's Gold Medal. W.T.S.

The susceptibility of experimental low-nickel Cr-Mn-N stainless steels to hot cracking, sensitization, and pitting corrosion in the as-welded condition was investigated. These steels were developed for deep-drawing applications and are similar in composition to type 201 stainless steel. In order to obtain good formability, the rapid rate of work-hardening (characteristic of the 200-series steels) was decreased by the addition of copper. The behaviour of two sets of alloys during fusion welding was investigated: 17Cr-7Mn-4Ni-o.5Cu steels containing 0.001 to 0.27 per cent nitrogen, and 17Cr-7Mn-2Ni-o.1N steels with copper contents varying between 0.01 and 3.11 per cent. Al the steels in these two sets initially solidify as d-ferrite, which transforms partially to austenite during cooling. As the nitrogen level increases, the microstructure of an autogenous-weld metal ranges from large amounts of d -ferrite, martensite, and Widmanstätten austenite, to austenitic structures with small amounts of vermicular d -ferrite. The formation of d -ferrite during solidification and the presence of ferrite retained in the weld metal indicate that the experimental alloys will not be susceptible to hot cracking during welding. Except for the alloy with 0.27 per cent nitrogen, the resistance to pitting corrosion of the experimental steels in the as-welded condition is inferior to that of type 304 stainless steel. None of the experimental steels is susceptible to intergranular attack in the as welded condition. The alloys with 0.19 and 0.27 per cent nitrogen have properties (corrosion and microstructure) similar to those of type 304 stainless steel in the as-welded condition.

Each year the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy offers a prize (or prizes should the entries warrant it) of up to RlOO for the best paper or dissertation on a topic appropriate to the interests of the Institute. The competition is open to all Student Members of the Institute. A Student Member who is in fulltime study at a university may submit the dissertation or thesis he has to write in part fulfilment of his university degree, provided that it is presented in a manner and on a topic suitable for publication in the journal. Entries for 1976 should reach the Institute by 31st December, 1976.

Mintek now offers a service for the accurate measurement and analysis of air pollution in South Africa. 'The deteriorating air quality and general degradation of the environments in industrialized and urban regions of South Africa have been of concern for more than a decade', says Mintek's Dr Johann Engelbrecht. 'The accompanying effect on health, visibility, and damage to property and the environment have prompted the public, authorities, and industry to take appropriate action. A recent study conducted by the Medical Research Council on schoolchildren in the Vaal Triangle, clearly demonstrated the relationship between the deficient quality of the air in that area, and the resultant respiratory diseases.

It is generally accepted that alkalis attack and degrade the carbon fraction of coke in a blast furnace. Because South African cokes contain relatively high amounts of ash, the influence of alkalis on the ash fraction was investigated, the carbon and ash fractions being separated and studied separately. Potassium engenders the formation of liquid, with a resultant expansion of volume and a decrease in the strength of the coke ash. However, the ash did not play a significant part in the degradation of the coke, and it was found that the catalytic effect of potassium on the Boudouard reaction was the overriding factor in the coke-degradation process.

The South African narrow reef hard rock mining industry has been stuck in a time warp with relatively little change in the mining process in the last century. This paper presents a methodology on how to implement change in narrow reef hard rock mining. It then explores a number of technologies that have been introduced into this mining industry and the impact that they have had on the mining process. The author then presents his view on whether the defined change process has been followed and sets out to identify the most critical aspect of ensuring that change is successfully implemented. Future demand will also be speculated on.

(Illinois) (Genoot) Although the industrial physiologist can still be regarded as a rarity in South African industry, it is obvious that he could make a positive contribution to the control of air pollution. For the past twenty-two years, the gold-mining industry has invoked the aid of industrial physiologists in solving various problems that continually crop up in the more effective and safer utilization of man-power. Air pollution is only one facet that has received attention. It can be stated emphatically that other industries could gain many advantages from the employment of this type of specialist. Because of inadequate opportunities for academic training, however, the industrial physiologists available might not be enough to fill all the possible posts in industry at present, but confidence is expressed that interested persons will soon be able to follow a full university course in this field of study.
