Dr Andrew Cosgarea, Jr, Associate Director of Opera¬tions of the U.S. Mint, and Chairman of the Awards Committee of the International Precious Metals Institute, announced the IPMI award recipients for 1985. The awards were presented at the Institute's Annual Banquet in New York City on 11th June, 1985. The Distinguished Achievement Award was presented posthumously to Dr E.M. Savitsky, of the A.A. Baikow Institute of Metallurgy of the U.S.S.R., for a life-time career devoted to investigations on the properties of the platinum-group metals. Dr Savitsky investigated over 300 phase diagrams, which became the basis for the selection of alloys and the prediction of properties. He published over 300 technical papers during his career. Dr Savitsky died during the summer of 1984 while being considered for the IPMI Award. The Engelhard Henry J. Albert Award was presented to Dr Stephen J. Lippard, Professor of Chemistry, MIT, in recognition of his research contributions in platinum chemistry and its application to nucleic acids. This prize

The influence of two weeks of microclimate cooling on the state of heat acclimatization by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), A. J. S. BENADE, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), and W. H. VAN DER WALT, B.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor) Five volunteer Black subjects were acclimatized according to the climatic-room acclimatization procedure, and their states of heat acclimatization were determined by the usual heat-stress test. The subjects thereafter wore pre-frozen jackets in a somewhat higher environmental temperature (33,9/35,6 °C). stepping at the same rate as before for four hours a day for fourteen days. The heat-stress test was repeated and followed by a similar test at the higher environmental temperature. It was found that fourteen days of microclimate cooling in a very hot environment had no adverse effect on the degree of heat acclimatization. The sweat rates during microclimate cooling remained high, even though no sweating is possible beneath the pre-frozen ice-jacket. which indicates that there is an increase in sweat rate from the areas of exposed skin.

For a number of years the steel tube and pipe industry has worked on resolving problems of product quality. These have largely been resolved and new products have been developed to take advantage of new developments. To fully coordinate market acceptance guidance on use of galvanized piping was also required. This was largely achieved locally in 2004 with the publication by the SABS of ARP 060 - Guidance on the use and application of hot dip galvanized steel piping for the transportation of potable water in South Africa. Use of this document is not easy however and a need to have a simple computer model to assist the specifier was identified. Working with a major tube and pipe manufacturer this is now being developed and this paper will provide the background to the model?s development and its intended use. There is still a need for a partner Code of Practice on the performance of galvanized piping in buried conditions and the need for this will be highlighted together with current available information.

During the past two to three years, there have been some significant Improvements to the quality of the support systems being used on South African gold mines, and the Implementation of these new developments, together with more worker awareness has been instrumental in reducing rock-related accidents, particularly in deep mines. This paper provides guidelines to mine and group personnel on how to monitor the ongoing Implementation of new technologies and so ensure the benefits that will accrue in terms of mine safety and profitability. Particular attention is given to the establishment of auditing procedures that will enable management to assess the benefits obtained from new technologies, as well as providing Improved maintenance procedures and procedures for the optimum utilization of seismic data. The areas that receive most attention include support systems for stopes and tunnels, such as hydraulic props, backfill, and rockburst-resistant tunnel support; stope and regional support layouts; mine standards; and staffing of the rock-engineering department. Crankshaft driven piston and piston diaphragm pumps inherently generate a varying flow each crankshaft revolution. Depending on the system connected, this flow variation results in a pressure pulsation. This pressure pulsation may, depending on the structural design, result in structural vibrations. In order to limit the level of pressure pulsations, volume absorbing devices, mostly gas filled vessels, are used. The standard selection of these so-called dampeners is based on the flow variation of the pump but does not incorporate the interaction with the connected system. The paper discusses the application of a pulsation analysis tool developed by WEIR Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO positive displacement slurry pumps. The paper first discusses the basics of pressure pulsation analysis, such as flow variation generated by crankshaft driven pumps, and hydraulic effects such as capacitance, inductance and resistance and their influence on the hydraulic response of a system. Furthermore, the relation between pressure pulsations and structural vibrations, known as fluid structure interaction, will be discussed. Additionally, the capabilities of the pump pulsation analysis tool are presented, illustrated by examples of simulation results and experimental verification.

The role of the Institute is to represent the mining and metallurgical profession. In this role the Institute has aligned itself with Associated Scientific and Technical Societies, the Council of Scientific Societies and the Engineering Association. The Institute is also active on the Engineering Council of South Africa.

From 19 November 1996, South African companies will be able to manage the impact their activities have on the environment in terms of international standards. The establishment of a registration scheme for environmental management systems was formally announced by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) (19 November 1996). At a function held at the SABS head office in Pretoria, Dr Jean du Plessis, President of the SABS, announced the launch of the SABS ISO 14001 registration scheme which is based upon ISO 14001, 'the internationally recognized yardstick for environmental management'.

Over 200 delegates attended the SAIMM Colloquium on Flotation, which was held at Mintek on 22nd September, 1983. In introducing the programme, the Chairman of the Technical Programme Committee, Mr Eugene Fivaz, said that an attempt had been made to strike a balance between theoretical and practical papers, which he hoped would provide something for everyone. He wished to record in advance the thanks of the Institute to S.A. Cyanamid for sponsoring the lunch, and to Bateman Equipment Limited for the cocktail party to be held at the end of the day's proceedings.

Professor D. G. Krige, of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of the Witwatersrand, received the degree of Doctor of Engineering (honoris causa) from the University of Pretoria at the Autumn Graduation Ceremony in April 1981. He was honoured an outstanding engineer for his world-renowned pioneering work in the field of statistical methods of ore valuation, or geostatistics as it has become known. Metalliferous Ore Deposits A short course on the 'Evolution of Metalliferous Ore Deposits' will be held at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, from 8th to 13th February, 1982.

A comminution model and a quick laboratory milling test procedure are presented. These allow the determination of milling parameters for the - optimization of ball size and pulp density in operating mills estimation of the performance of new feed stocks in an existing mill - estimation of the expected milling performance for a new project. Information on the estimation of the size of mills to deliver specified amounts of comminution energy, and amount of expected ball, rod, and liner wear to allow cost estimates for new projects, is also included.

The theme of the Congress was 'Resources and Technology', the intention being to highlight those basic technical aspects in the disciplines of geology, mining, extractive metallurgy, and metals technology that are required for successful mineral-based operations. The technical programme covered a fairly broad field, as is appropriate for the CMMI Congress, and was generally considered to be of a high professional standard; informative and, with the exception of some minor hitches, well-run. Parallel sessions were held in the four disciplines. All were well attended, and despite tight presentation schedules, certain valuable discussions developed.

The 10th Annual UCT -US Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel at Gordon's Bay from 31 July to 2 August 1991. The conference was attended by 133 delegates representing a broad cross-section of the mining and metallurgical industry in South Africa. For the first time the Symposium, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary, was extended to two days. A cal for papers was announced and the organizers were inundated with responses resulting in a very full technical programme which consisted of 29 oral and 15 poster presentations.

RMR, Rock Mass Rating, is one of the famous rock classifications. However, RMR was proposed empirically and absolutely depends on the experience of engineer. Therefore, engineering verification is needed for RMR system itself. In this study, the factor analysis and the multiple regressions were performed in order to evaluate the validity of rating factor of RMR. Also numerical analysis was carried out using the FLAC based on Taguchi method, a kind of robust designs, in order to examine the support of tunnel corresponding to the revaluated RMR. As the result of the analysis new RMR was proposed with five minimized factors of intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence and roughness of discontinuities. RMR est un des procédés de la classification du roc qui sont généralement utilisés. Mais RMR s'appuie sur l'expérience et se absolument soumet à l'expérience d'ingénieur. Il est donc nécessaire de vér- ifier techniquement sur le système de RMR. Dans cet étude, on met à exécution l'analyse du facteur et la régression multiple pour évaluer la convenance de la cause de classification de RMR. De même, pour évaluer le support du tunnel selon RMR réestimé, on a exécuté l'analyse de la valeur numérique par FLAC qui se base sur la lois de Taguchi, laquelle est une sorte de système du plan robuste. Selon le résultat de la régression multiple, il est proposé de nouvel RMR à partir de l’intensité de roc intact, RQD, l'espacement, la persistance et la rugosité RMR ist eine der weit benutzten klassifikationen fuer die felsenstuecke. Da aber RMR erfahrungs- maessig ist und ueberwiegend von der persoenlichen Erfahrung eines Ingenieurs entschieden ist, ist es mit Sicherheit notwendig, das RMR-system selbst technisch zu ueberpruefen. In diesem studium waren die faktorenanalyse und mehrfachregressionanalyse durchgefuehrt, um die gerechtigkeit der klassifikationenfaktoren von RMR zu bewerten. Ferner war noch eine numerische analyse mit ben- utzung von FLAC aufgrund der Taguchi-methode, eine art technik der robust design, eingefuehrt, um die tunnelstuetze infolge der neubewertung von RMR unterzusuchen. Introduction There is a continual economic push to increase the productivity of mobile material handling equipment used in open pit mines. This includes the largest electrical machines: excavators (draglines and shovels) and haul trucks (Figure 1). Existing DC drive systems used on this type of equipment are a mature technology. They have no further economic potential to accommodate larger equipment be-cause of the high maintenance costs and the trade-off between power, speed and space limitations of their DC traction mo-tors. In recent years the large-scale introduction of AC drives in the rail transportation sector1,and the availability of poworful GTO and IGBT modules have led to the devolopment of compact, powerful, an drugged AC inverter drives specifically adapted to the mining market2,3. The major advantage of AC drives stems from the squirrel cage induction motor which eliminates the DC commutator. This leads directly to higher speed, increased power density, higher reliability, greater efficiency and lower maintenance of the traction motors. In the context of excavators and haul trucks, additional benofits driving the move to AC are (i) increased production rate due to higher machine speed, and power density, (ii) increased reliability and lower cost inverters using 3.3 kV IGBT's, (iii) active front-end (AFE) technology that improves compatibility with the mine power grid and an proved dynamic response,(iv) intelligent converter design that provides increased fault tolerance, (v) contextual maintenance software that facilitates trouble-shooting, and (vi) remote diagnostic capabilities. This paper describes how these and other features of AC drives lead to higher productivity in mining shovels, draglines, and haul trucks. Minimize the cost per ton of material moved The overall goal that drives design and sales of excavators and haul trucks is the constant requirement to reduce the cost per ton of material moved. Whether this involves blasting, loading trucks, or hauling material to the crusher or waste dump, equipment that reduces the cost per ton of material moved contributes to a more profitable operation. An accurate determination of the true cost per ton to move material must consider every aspect of the equipment and the circumstances under which it is used. Procurement and capital costs, fuel, operating, and maintenance costs over the useful life, and eventually the cost of scrapping should all be taken into account to determine the real cost per ton of moving material. We will focus on two broad areas that relate to the equipment itself; factors influencing the amount of material moved (Table I) and factors influencing the cost of material moved (Table II). Emphasis will be given to those elements in the tables that most influence the productivity of excavators and haul trucks due to the application of AC drive technology. Maximize the amount of material moved Maximize production rate he production rate refers to the quantity of material that can be loaded or moved per hour. This generally involves larger, faster, and more powerful equipment that operates more reliably to minimize down-time. AC motors Figure 2 compares the hoist motor speed-torque response of two 77 t (85 short ton) shovels, one AC the other DC. The absence of commutation limits on the AC motors enables the AC shovel to operate with a greater area under the speed-torque curve, resulting in faster lowering speeds and reduced times for the swing to return to the pit. This is especially important for short swing angles where the operator may have to wait for the dipper to lower. Reducing the cycle time by 6 to 8 seconds at the shovel translates into an increase in shovel production of about 20%. Larger equipment The bucket capacity of excavators has increased approximately 100-fold over the last century. Figure 3

Mixtures of MnO and graphite were reacted under argon at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1425°C, and the loss in mass of the mixture was recorded continuously. The results showed that the rate of reduction of MnO increased as the temperature increased and the ratio of MnO to C decreased. The effect of the particle size of MnO and of graphite on the rate of reduction at I350°C was very small in the range 63 to 250 µm for MnO and 45 to 355 µm for graphite. The rate of reduction at I350°C was increased markedly by the addition of Na2CO2 and K2CO3, was slightly increased by the addition of Fe2O3, was unaffected by the addition of CaO, MgO, and AI2O., and was decreased by the addition of SiO2. Some CO2 was always present in the effluent gas, and this was taken as evidence that the reduction of MnO occurred by way of CO2 as an intermediate product. The activation energy of the ratecontrolling step was 57,5 kcal, and this was similar to the measured activation energy for the gasification of graphite by CO., namely, 61,S kcal per mole of graphite. A simple kinetic model was derived on the assumption that the gasification of graphite was the ratecontrolling step, and the results over the temperature range 1200 to I425°C, when plotted in the appropriate form, yielded straight lines as predicted by the model.

A new type of bit, that has been developed and is being evaluated, shows great potential in expanding the range of rock strength that can be cut by continuous miners and roadheaders. This new style of bit is called the frustum. The tools tested in this program were developed, manufactured and patented by Briese Industrial Technologies, Inc. The frustum derives its name from the unique geometric shape of the cutter, or cutting insert. The frustum shape cutting tool has previously been proven as an effective cutting tool for machining metals, metal matrix composites and polymers. The frustum rock bit has a very dense carbide frustum shape tip mounted on the end of a steel body similar to the conical bits typically used on continuous miners and roadheaders. In between the carbide frustum cutting tip and the steel body there can be a bearing that allows the frustum to rotate around the bit axis. When the bit is forced into the rock at a skewed angle, the frustum tip rotates as it travels. This rotation greatly reduces the cutting forces acting on the bit when compared to the current state of the art conical drag bits. This cutting force reduction, derived from the frustum’s cutting action, allows for much harder and more abrasive rock to be cut without quickly wearing out the bit. Full scale laboratory cutting tests have been performed with the frustum bit in direct comparison to the current state of the art conical bits. Field trials of the frustum bit are currently being planned. Test procedures, results and findings are presented.

A school on the principles and practices of ladle metallurgy, organized by the Technical Committee: Metals Technology of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held at the University of Pretoria from 13th to 16th November, 1989. The course leader, Professor R.J. Fruehan from the Carnegie Melon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, presented the main part of the course. Three papers were read by local steelmakers on the experience gained in the field of ladle metallurgy in South Africa. The School also included a special half day seminar on new and innovative steelmaking and casting processes presented by Professor Fruehan.
