1. Book review . Fundamentals of fracture mechanics, by J.F. Knot. London, Buterworths, 1981 (reprint). Reviewer: G. Leadbeater The present reviewer approached the above book as a relative novice on the intricate details of fracture mechanics. Thus, the review is based to a great extent on how easily the information presented can be assimilated and understood, and how the book's format and content facilitate this. The structural design of a pavement relates to the ability of the road to carry the imposed loads without the need for excessive maintenance or rehabilitation. Current techniques for the structural design of haulage roads are empirical and based primarily on the previous experience of personnel assigned to pavement design, both in terms of the strength of the structure and the quality of the wearing course material. This has the potential for unwarranted expenditure on too thick a structure or, conversely, premature deformation leading to the need for excessive expenditure on maintenance. Furthermore, the effect of larger haulage vehicles on the structural performance of a pavement cannot be predicted. Thus, there is a need to develop a portable and practical method of structural design. This paper presents an overview of structural design methods for mine haulage roads and, through an analysis and quantification of the structural performance of existing pavements, recommends the mechanistic design procedure, together with a revised structural design and associated limiting design criteria. It is concluded that the application of the mechanistic method to a design project can reduce the costs of haulage roads construction and accrue additional benefit in terms of reduced operating and maintenance costs.

Groups of up to twelve new recruits to the industry were subjected to climatic room acclimatization for either five, seven, eight or nine days prior to being tested for the degree to which they had been acclimatized. These tests were done at 32,2 0C (wet bulb) at a wind velocity of about 0,4 m/sec and the men worked for four hours at a rate of 215,6 kg m/min on one day and at a rate of 431,2 kg m/min on the second day. The results indicated that there is no significant difference between the degrees of acclimatization obtained by the eight- and nineday procedures which confirms the conculsions drawn in a previous report1. The eight-day procedure can thus be claimed to be perfectly adequate and safe. Decreasing the period of exposure to five or seven days would however, not be justified because of the significant differences in physiological responses that were observed on both test days between men acclimatized for these periods and those acclimatized for nine days. It is concluded that it would be unsafe to employ these shorter periods of acclimatization when underground environmental temperatures at which the men are to work, exceed 31 0C (wet bulb).

In order to systematically study the size effect on the shear strength of rock joints, this study used the computer-aided-manufacturing system to reproduce the artificial rock joints for saw-toothed joints, Barton's standard joint profiles of JRC = 4~6 and 18~20, and natural rock joint profiles. We divided, enlarged, reduced, and assembled these joint profiles to obtain joint specimens of various sizes ranging from 75 mm to 300 mm in length. The shear strengths of these joint specimens were tested under different normal stresses using a direct shear test apparatus. The surface conditions of the joints at failure were also examined. The size and geometry effects on the shear strengths of these joints of various sizes and configurations were evaluated based on the test results. Um die künstlichen Trennflächen für reguläre dreieckige Trennflächen, Bartonsche standardmäßige Querschnitte der Trennflächen von JRC = 4~6 und 18~20 und natürliche Querschnitte von Trennflächen wiederherzustellen, benutzt diese Forschungsarbeit das Computergestützte-Erstellungssystem, damit die Maßstabswirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit von Trennflächen systematisch untersucht werden kann. Die Querschnitte werden geteilt, vergrößert, verkleinert und zusammengesetzt, um Trennflächenproben in Längen variierend von 75 mm bis 300 mm zu erhalten. Die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächenproben wird unter unterschiedlichen Normalspannungen mit einem Direktscherversuchsgerät getestet. Die Querschnittszustände der Trennflächen bei Versagen werden ebenfalls untersucht. Nach den Untersuchungsergebnissen werden die Maßstabs- und Geometriewirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächen verschiedener Größen und Konfigurationen ausgewertet. Pour étudier systématiquement l’effet de la dimension des fractures des roches sur leur résistance au cisaillement un système de creation de fractures artificielles à l’ordinateur a été employé. Des fractures artificielles triangulaires, profils de fractures de Barton avec JRC = 4~6 et 18~20, et profils de fractures naturelles ont été reproduits. Les profils des fractures ont été arrangés de manière à obtenir des échantillons de longueur entre 75 et 300 mm. Une boîte de cisaillement a été utilisée pour étudier la résistance des fractures au cisaillement, sous plusieurs conditions de contraintes normales. Les conditions superficielles des fractures après rupture ont été étudiées. Les résultats de ces essais, effectués sur plusieurs échantillons de dimensions et configurations variées, ont contribué à établir l’influence des dimensions et de la géométrie des fractures sur leur résistance au cisaillement.

A prize awarded by the SAIMM for outstanding academic achievement by 4th-year and 5th-year diplomates at technikons was instituted several years ago. The Senior Vice-President, Mr J.D. Austin, accompanied by the Institute's Secretary, Mrs D. Gardner, attended a prize-awarding function in the form of a luncheon at the Hotel School of the Technikon Witwatersrand on the 25th May.

Three types of high-strength cold-rolled steels are discussed. Two are currently being developed at Iscor: rephos phorized steel and niobium microalloyed steel. Heat treatment after cold rolling is carried out in batch annealing furnaces. A third type, dual-phase steel, which requires a continuous annealing treatment for economic production, is also described. The properties, strengthening mechanisms, and applications of these three steels are examined.

The paper introduces a computer simulation technique to estimate the target detection probabilities associated with search surveys. The technique takes into account the inherent randomness associated with the distributional properties of geologic targets. Use of the technique is illustrated through examples. The paper provides information as to how this technique can be used in obtaining the optimum sampling pattern and optimum spacing associated with target detection surveys.

This was evident right from the start of the organization of the SAIMM Colloquium on Leaching, which was held at Mintek on the 8th and 9th November, 1988. The evolution of backfill-distribution systems for deep gold mines is examined. The status of current technology for the design of backfill-distribution systems is considered with reference to pipeline pressure gradients, pipeline wear rates, and slurry flow regimes. The effect of an increase in the relative density of the slurry on the performance of backfill-distribution systems is illustrated. Future trends regarding the design of backfill-distribution systems are discussed.

A brief account is given of the influence of sulphuric acid and chloride ions during the recovery of uranium by solvent extraction, followed by a discussion of the settling behaviour of dispersions and models to represent that behaviour. The paper ends with a description of various methods for the recovery of solvent, which is lost in the solvent-extraction process by entrainment and adsorption on solids and by dissolution.

Various theories proposed to account for microbial corrosion are reviewed as a background to a better understanding of this type of corrosion in iron-based alloys. Experimental evidence is presented to show that even stainless-steel alloys are prone to microbial attack by sulphate-reducing bacteria. The corrosive attack by the bacteria is due primarily to the hydrogen sulphide that is produced as part of their metabolic processes.

Mining plants operating in dunes north of Richards Bay have uncovered Iron Age archaeological material that spans the greater part of the past 2000 years. This was announced by archaeologists Gavin Whitelaw of the Natal Museum's Institute of Cultural Resource Management (ICRM), and Len van Schalkwyk and Mlungisi Ngubane of the KwaZulu Monuments Council (KMC), who are currently contracted by Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) to assess the cultural resources exposed during mining activities.

In the hope of finding out what the readers of the SAIMM Journal want of our Journal, we sent out a questionnaire with the October 1979 issue. The 2500 copies of the questionnaire sent out elicited 228 responses, which represents a return of 8,8 per cent. The number of responses received from overseas was 24, i.e., approximately 10 per cent of the total. The following is an analysis of the responses received.

World-wide hikes in the oil price and the prospect of future scar cities of liquid and gaseous fuels have given enhanced status to the South African coal industry. It is thus understandable that the colloquium held at Wit bank on 3rd and 4th October, 1979, and organized jointly by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the South African Coal Processing Society should have attracted more than 400 delegates.
