Maximum fan efficiency can only be obtained when the fan has the correct combination of size, speed, and blade setting to provide the required flow of air against the mine resistance. As the mine grows older, resistance decreases unless old workings flow is restricted, and new combinations of speed and blade setting or different fan sizes may provide greater economy.

According to the Markowitz portfolio theory the value of a diversified portfolio is higher than the sum of the parts of a portfolio, which is an important consideration for the correct valuation. This is valid for real estate portfolios as well as for mining assets (or enterprises). This paper analyses the application of the portfolio theory to a diversified portfolio of assets in the real estate industry and draws conclusions on further research work to be done in the minerals industry. The volume of real estate transactions is increasing over recent years. As such, the nature of those transactions is constantly changing and in some cases portfolios become more heterogeneous as they are composed of different property categories, e.g. locations and types of use. This makes their economic evaluation more difficult. This paper focuses on the acquisition of a fairly heterogeneous real estate property portfolio purchased by “Commerz Real” in Germany in Q4 2019. For economic evaluation the widely used Markowitz portfolio theory (Markowitz, 1952) was applied. It was investigated whether diversification effects could achieve added value in the form of a reduction in risk compared to the sum of their individual components. As a result the findings of this research could be applied to other heterogeneous real estate transactions and even to mine property portfolio or PPP1 project portfolio transactions.

It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. "The presence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) is problematic in gold processing not only because it is environmentally hazardous due to its arsenic content but also because it is refractory, causing both cyanide and oxygen consumption to increase. Selective leaching and treatment of the arsenic would prove advantageous prior to applying conventional gold leaching methods. The reactivity of enargite samples from Butte in Montana and Quiruvilca in Peru were spectroelectrochemically studied under alkaline conditions – pH range of 8-13 – using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Raman spectra of the surface were collected during and after potentially cycled voltammograms in order to determine and compare surface species against theoretical EH-pH diagrams constructed from mass-balanced thermodynamic calculations using STABCAL software. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, covellite (CuS) peaks were found in a short matter of time, above ~100mV vs. SHE for pH 9-13, suggesting arsenic leaching specifically occurred. At longer conditioning times, elemental sulfur was observed and tended to passivate the surface. The presence of elemental sulfur suggests that copper was eventually leached from the surface. By operating above pH 12, under slightly reducing conditions near -300mV vs. SHE, arsenic can be selectively leached as thioarsenate (AsS4 3-) or thiosulfate (AsO4 3-) without sulfur formation.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of ores and concentrates bearing arsenic and other hazardous elements often outweigh those in hydrometallurgical processing, particularly when minerals like enargite (Cu3AsS4) are present. The hydrometallurgical processing of enargite-bearing materials can be broken down into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under alkaline conditions. The selective leaching of arsenic would preferably leave behind copperrich sulfide phases, typically chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), which then become more amenable to conventional copper (and gold) processing. Furthermore, selective leaching often employs sulfide (S2-), bisulfide (HS-) or polysulfides (Sx 2-) to first extract the arsenic as AsS4 3- and AsS3 3- (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp et al., 2010a,b). However, hypochlorite leaching (Viñals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihajlovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and finegrinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface (Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006) have been investigated to increase the normally slow reaction kinetics. Because gold ores are becoming more refractory due to increasing arsenic contents as a result of enargite, these methods are being examined more closely by the gold-mining industry."

A near-record crowd of mining history enthusiasts made the trip to Leadville, CO in September to attend the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum’s 19th induction banquet. Dressed in Victorian garb, black tie tuxedos and formal gowns, the 268 people honored four distinguished men who made a lasting impact on the U.S. mining industry. They joined 188 other inductees. The first induction banquet took place in 1988, with about 500 people attending.

Epithermal gold-silver (lead-zinc-copper-manganese) mineralization on Misima Island is confined to steep and reactivated flat-lying normal faults in the upper plate of a major, shallowly dipping detachment fault. The hangingwall comprises an Eocene metavolcano-sedimentary sequence that has been extensively intruded byMiocene calc-alkaline granodiorite. It is unconformably overlain by Pliocene sedimentary and volcanic rocks. High-pressure amphibolite facies rocks dominate the footwall and have many characteristics of a metamorphic core complex. Mafic-alkalic lamprophyre dike swarms intrude the hangingwall and footwall sequences. Previous workers attributed the gold-silver mineralization on Misima to the intrusion of the porphyritic granodiorite (Williamson, 1984). This has been proposed for many tertiary gold deposits of the southwest Pacific(Sillitoe, 1989; Leach and Corbett, 1994).

The El Soldado copper deposit occurs in volcanic rocks of alkaline affinity of Lower Cretaceous age. The orebodies are discordant and show strong structural and lithological control. The mineralizing event was accompanied by hydro- thermal alteration expressed as carbonatization, silicification, and chloritization. Individual orebodies contain bornite-chalcopyrite cores which are surrounded by haloes dominated by chalcopyrite and pyrite respectively. The sulfur isotope composition of copper sulfides strongly suggests the sulfur is of magmatic origin. Fluid inclusion studies show the mineralizing fluid to be a highly saline NaC1-CaC12, brine. No evidence of boiling was found. The deposit is most likely of epigenetic origin. Hydrothermal fluids were produced during crystallization of a sodium rich trachytic magma during the waning stages of an episode of alkaline magmatic activity. Similar copper deposits along the Chilean Coastal Range may also be associated with alkaline host rocks.

This paper proposes a framework for applying surrogate-based approaches to evaluate SEM construction, which can both benefit the uncertainty analysis in the design stage and real-time calibration during the construction process. The performances of four surrogate modeling approaches, namely back-propagation neural network (BPNN), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF), and polynomial chaos expansions combined with Kriging (PCK), were evaluated and compared. A variance-based global sensitivity analysis (GSA) was performed on the surrogate predictor to quantify the impacts of geotechnical parameters on the deformation responses induced by SEM tunneling. The Regional Connector Crossover Cavern project constructed in Downtown Los Angeles was set as the benchmark problem to demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of the proposed procedure.

The 16-to-1 milling operation is Sunshine Mining Company's first new silver and gold producing facility. The 16-to-1 underground mine and mill are located approximately 64 km (40 miles) southwest of Tonopah, Nevada. Ore re- serves in the epithermal vein deposit are estimated at 0.91 Mt (one million st) of ore, at an average silver grade of 206 to 240 g/t (6 to 7 oz/st) and an average gold grade of 1.2 g/t (0.035 oz/st). The underground mine uses a large diameter blasthole stoping system of mining using highly mechanized rubber-tired equipment. The mill uses conventional cyanide leaching with countercurrent decantation and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. The mill start-up was in February 1982 resulting in the first pour of dore' in March 1982. The mill's present annual production is approximately 31.1 t (1.0 million oz) of silver and 264 kg (8500 oz) of gold.

The Grand Isle Sulphur Mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The depth of water at this location is about 50 feet. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases which were originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Company by the State of Louisiana, and which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the Department of the Interior of the United States, pursuant to Section 6(b) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Company acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Company the sulphur rights underlying the tracts. This assignment was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on July 12, 1957. The Director, United States Geological Survey, approved Freeport Sulphur Company as Operator on July 31, 1957. Actual design began in September 1956; the first structural contract was let December 15, 1957, and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction will be completed and production started in early 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30,- 000,000, of which $8,000,000 is the extra cost for being in the Gulf of Mexico.

Creation of needed new resources will be accomplished mainly by imaginative and diligent geologic exploration because geologic availability is the key determinant of future mineral supply. Adequate resources of most commodities can be made available for the rest of this century and beyond if they are discovered. Thus conversion of hypothetical and speculative resources into available reserves will provide the principal challenge to earth scientists. Additional problems now compete for our attention. First is a challenge to discover more resources than have been found to date for domestic needs as world-wide demands increase exponentially and as easily found high-grade deposits are rapidly being depleted. New ways to find new types of deposits are required. Second, the United States, a resource importer, increasingly is challenged for access to foreign supplies through stiffening competition and economic or expropriation sanctions. Balancing needs for mineral supply and environmental protection is a third challenge. Geologic explorers must consider statutory as well as economic and technologic requirements, controlled access to public and private lands, competition with urban sprawl or wilderness, limitations on discovery, appraisal and mining methods, and restoration of mined areas. Finally, is the challenge to temper public and private attitudes and assure that decisions bearing on resource problems are based on comprehensive credible facts. While striving to maintain and improve the standard of living, many Americans appear to disdain and mistrust those organizations that provide their material where-withal. Meeting these challenges effectively, and in time, will require careful appraisal of the resource system and the joint efforts of industry, university, and government earth science research.

The air flow problems in openpit mines are complex. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models can provide detailed information regarding air flow pattern, velocity distribution, temperature, and pollutant concentration in an enclosed domain of an openpit mine. A range of turbulent models can be selected with varying complexity and accuracy. Pollutant transport models, however, differ in their assumptions and structure as well as in the algorithms they use. As a result, predictions vary from model to model. This paper presents a study of pollutant transport in an actual openpit mine under a stable boundary layer. The objective was to test two turbulence models using similar geometry and the same input conditions and model constants. Measured data were used to compare the results of the two CFD models, namely, the kappa-epsilon (к-є) model and the Large Eddy Simulation model. Despite the complex synoptic situations, different meteorological input data and fast-changing conditions, the simulation results from both the models were in good agreement regarding the dispersion of pollutants.

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. In June 1998, the world's largest grinding mill, the 40 ft (12.2 m) diameter 20 MW Cadia gearless SAG mill, was commissioned. This was a leap of over40% above the largest operating SAG mill. A significant saving in capital cost gave the incentive necessary for a single mill line at Cadia, resulting in the selection of the 40 ft (12.2 m) diameter mill. Now, after 18 months of operation, this paper will review the significant items involved in the development, design, manufacture, installation, and operation of this mill.

Adaptive management can be described as a structured, iterative process of robust decision making in the face of uncertainty, with a goal of reducing uncertainty over time through system monitoring. Adaptive management is a tool which can be applied to not only change a system, but learn about the system (Holling, 1978). Adaptive management has been used in ecosystem management for years and guidance is provided in a variety of handbooks and publications. Adaptive management can be applied to industrial facilities and mines through the use of an adaptive environmental management plan (AEMP) and associated practices. The goal of this paper is to provide an explanation of how the plans and practices support regulatory agency approvals and permitting, span the life-cycle of mines, manage uncertainty, and assist in addressing mining impact and legacy issues. AEMPs and associated practices are useful tools to address the uncertainties in identifying, evaluating, and managing impacts of proposed new and modified mining facilities undergoing environmental review. Once a proposed project is approved, the AEMP continues as a living document, being informed, revised, and adapted by the operations. The AEMP can serve as an ongoing management tool for describing and evaluating environmental impacts, continuing in operations into post reclamation. If initiated during planning and environmental review of a project (and in some locations such as the United States [U.S.], the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)), the AEMP becomes a basis to identify, monitor, and manage potential project environmental impacts. Development of an AEMP for an operating mine is also beneficial since there are generally developing and ongoing environmental issues at those facilities as well. Over time, the AEMP is adapted to changing requirements and conditions including those anticipated and unanticipated. Ever increasing scrutiny of mining projects and the complexities of the EIS process highlight the uncertainties inherent in impact predictions. In making the momentous decision of initial project approval, these uncertainties can discourage the regulatory agencies? actions and create stakeholder anxiety and controversy about a project. A well-designed AEMP can support the decision to approve an EIS and enable a project to move forward. Additionally, an AEMP can inform financial assurance estimates and revisions over the life of a mine providing all parties including the citizens of the surrounding communities with greater confidence that potential environmental impacts and risks will be well managed.

Industrial shale-oil operations in North America and Europe predated the Drake discovery, but, since then, most have succumbed to competition from petroleum. However, the existence of enormous oil-shale resources in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming [estimated at over a trillion bbl of shale oil in place] and the advancement of United States oil- shale technology by research and development programs of government and industry during the past 15 years point to a natural partnership of petroleum and oil shale to meet the accelerating energy demands of the future. The utilization of oil shale is not a question of limited petroleum supplies, but one of economics. Two factors are expected to improve the economic outlook for industrial shale oil production -- a rise in petroleum replacement cost and further advances in oil-shale technology.

In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such sub-processes as: (i) The transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed, (ii) The stressing of the particles to a level high enough for breakage, (iii) The removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone, and (iv) The prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. The breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult sub-process to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. It is not only of academic interest to know how a particle breaks, but also it is important for practical applications because it provides a basis for evaluating both the direction and limitation for any potential comminution improvement.

New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills and geochemistry, as well as photographs and bibliographic resources. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential and other data. The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during the 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses of water samples. ArcMap includes the location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e., hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

The use of high-efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) for large scale, open pit mine dewatering operations provides a good example of how technology, products and services from the oil and gas industry can be adapted to the mining industry. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito in the Zacatecas state of Mexico, at the Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit deposits. The technology, products and services are from Schlumberger artificial lift (AL) and Schlumberger industrial water services (IWS). Overview of high-efficiency ESPs This section provides a brief description of the basic components, specifications and operating capacity ranges for the ESPs compared with traditional or conventional dewatering well pumps. This information helps to establish how ESPs provide certain functional and economic advantages over conventional pumps in a mine dewatering application. A schematic of a high-efficiency ESP in an oil and gas (O&G) application is shown in Fig. 1.

"Specialized numerical modeling codes have been developed over the years to estimate ground stresses during the excavation of coal in underground mines. One of these tools, MULSIM, a displacement discontinuity boundary element code, was last developed by Zipf into a version called MULSIM/NL [USBM 1992a, 1992b]. The code was used frequently in years past, but closure of the Bureau of Mines in 1996 marked the beginning of a pause in its development. A similar tool with distinctly different treatment of overburden idealization, LaModel, was subsequently developed [Heasley 1997] and largely displaced MULSIM/NL in the literature. However, recent work modeling deep western longwall coal mines [Larson and Whyatt 2013] has demonstrated that MULSIM has distinct advantages for regions with relatively stiff and strong overburden. This work required that MULSIM be revived and updated into a version called MulsimNL/Large. Updates include larger array sizes, greater precision, greater number of materials, and the addition of a five-point, six-segment pillar load/displacement model that provides the user a more flexible coal-strength model allowing hardening and softening before a final residual strength. MulsimNL/Large has the ability to calibrate to large load transfer distances observed in some western U.S. coal mines that appear to be caused by strong, massive units in the overburden and/or floor of a coal mine. Also, it provides the ability to calibrate gob stiffness to simulate measurements or estimates of overpanel weight distribution between gob and abutment, while still maintaining load transfer distance with minor adjustments. MulsimNL/Large can easily implement material strengths calculated from various pillar strength models. The five-point model gives MulsimNL/Large the ability to easily simulate pillar behavior that is extracted from detailed pillar models, such as FLAC3D. MulsimNL/Large or similar approaches should be considered for evaluating mining layouts where stratigraphic conditions are known to cause overpanel weight to transfer to an extent significantly longer than the empirical method widely used to calculate load transfer distances in the U.S. [Peng and Chiang 1984; Mark 1987; USBM 1990]."
