The use of finite element programs for evaluating large grinding mill shells is becoming increasingly popular. However, large scale, detailed analysis can become a burdensome task when one is required to manually prepare the necessary data to be entered into the program, while evaluating the voluminous results is even more devastating. Although available computerized finite element analyses can reduce computation time from years to months or even weeks, additional pre and post processors can reduce the time for data preparation and result evaluation to hours, while simultaneously reducing the probability of human error. Examples of the uses of these processors are presented as well as typical modeling techniques.

Application of shallow seismic reflection to problems associated with mineral exploration, mine planning, abandoned-mine detection, and environmental evaluation has been successful in a variety of geologic settings. Increased dynamic range of recording equipment and decreased cost of processing hardware and software have made shallow seismic reflection a cost-effective means of imaging geologic targets significant to mining operations. Seismic data possess sufficient resolution in many areas to detect faulting with displacement of less than 3 m in coal seams as thin as 2 m at depths of 200 m. Subsurface voids associated with abandoned mines at depths of less than 20 m can be detected and mapped. Seismic reflection has been successful mapping disturbed subsurface associated with dissolution mining of salt Complex geologic features associated with deposition of various hydrothermal minerals have been effectively mapped with high resolution seismic reflection at depths from 80 to over 300 m. Faults in sulfur-bearing cap rock over salt domes have been accurately located, allowing improved efficiency of the dissolution mining process. Shallow high-resolution seismic reflection has the potential to significantly enhance the economics and safety of mine operations.

Bentonite represents one of the main players in the stability of the drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution affect the physical properties of the drilling mud especially the rheological properties. Therefore, a specific particle size distribution was recommended by American Petroleum Institute (API) for use in drilling mud. To clarify the effect of individual size and size distribution, in this study, the bentonite sample was classified into different size fractions. Each size fraction was tested separately in terms of controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness, and packing density. The effect of each size fraction on the rheological properties of the suspension was correlated to the behavior of the whole particle size distribution in the bentonite sample. The results indicate that the coarser the particles, the higher the rheological properties; in this case, the API mixture is the highest. The filtration loss and cake thickness for the API mixture are lower than that of the individual size fractions due to its wider size distribution due to the filling of voids between larger particles with smaller ones, which lead to bed compaction and consequently lower fluid loss and cake thickness.

Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train, the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71 percent — as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay Mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.The gearless principleThe principal idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts, especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material.In order to apply this principle of simplification, the components of a conventional drive system are examined. They consist of:• Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump).• Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear/pinion).• The electric motor.• Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage.• Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation.• The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment)."

Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. The main purpose of mine ventilation design is to provide sufficient quantity and quality of air to the workers and to dilute methane and other contaminants. It is generally perceived that the additional air along the longwall face will improve methane dilution on the face and in the tailgate. However, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling efforts at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) under a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) funded research project have found that higher flow velocities along the longwall face are shown to increase the pressure differential between the gob and longwall face allowing more methane to be entrained in the active face and tailgate (TG) area, thereby negating the dilution effect. The increased face ventilation causes an increase in pressure along the headgate side which allows more oxygen to ingress into the gob area, thereby increasing the amount of oxygen available to form explosive methane air mixtures in the gob and to support spontaneous combustion of the coal. Two things are happening at two different locations along the longwall face, increase in pressure as the flow enters the active area cause an increase in pressure which forces more oxygen into the gob, but as the flow is developed along the longwall face, the higher velocities causes greater pressure drop allowing methane to enter the active face further downstream from the headgate (HG) towards the tailgate side. In this paper, a parametric study will be presented to discuss the effect that varying the face air quantity has on methane concentrations in the tailgate and formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in the gob. Counter to conventional wisdom, it appears that increased longwall face air quantities may increase the explosion hazard as they result in increased EGZ volumes in the gob, along with increased methane quantities in the tailgate return.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies. REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). Many studies have been made of the microflotation of quartz (1,2,3,4,5,6) and alumina (3,5,6, 7,8) using various anionic and cationic hetero- polar hydrocarbon surfactants as collectors. A few studies have been made on these minerals using amphoteric hydrocarbon collectors ( 9,10, 11,12) and only a few studies have been made on the use of fluorocarbon surfactants as flotation collectors (13,14). The present investigation compares microflotation response of the two minerals in hydocarbon and fluorocarbon collector systems of the anionic, cationic and amphoteric types. An attempt is made to relate flotation response of the minerals to their electrokinetic behavior and the pKa values of the collectors.

P.J. Ehret By and large, I agree with many of the precepts discussed in the Saperstein paper. I believe there is much more that can be done on the local level to involve both government and planning in the mine permit review process. Admittedly, much can be done to improve discussion between the state regulatory authority, local authorities, and mine operators. However, I strongly disagree, as suggested in the paper's conclusion, that such a system, as outlined in Saperstein's paper, could result in a reduction of review time or a lowering in the cost of permitting. The implementation of such a system by its very nature would only add a new level of bureaucracy to an already cumbersome process. This system, in my opinion, would only add to the cost of permitting and the time necessary to obtain a permit. Admittedly, it would achieve the result of adding local influence into the permitting process, but at what off-setting cost? It has been my professional first-hand experience and observation in the permitting and lands unsuitable processes to note that under the present system, local governments that do feel they have a stake in local mines and actively ad¬vocate their position (not simply comment), have had significant input into the conduct of mining and reclamation plans in their areas. Mining companies that mine in these areas are aware of local interests and attitudes, and do consider them in their plans. Simply put, local governments that want to get involved and want to play significant roles can and do. Those that do not advocate a position or have no input to offer do not. Although the present system is not as direct in effect in regard to local control as Saperstein's, it does work. It does so without the red tape that would result from developing miniature regulatory authorities in every county in which mining occurs. Although local input is important, there are many more sections of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) than Sections 508(a)(8) and 522(a)(3)(A) that also are important. It appears Saperstein's paper may overindulge these sections. An additional specific comment is made in regard to the statement that while local areas benefit from mining (wages, salaries, and purchases), they also endure environmental deterioration caused by mining affects. It is believed that the whole purpose for which SMCRA and its resulting regulations were enacted and developed was so mining would not be permitted if significant environmental deterioration could occur. Therefore, it could be argued that this point under current law is moot. Reply by L.W. Saperstein P.J. Ehret writes in a reasoned and rational way and makes some good points. The arguments in favor of central control of the designation process reflect all of the benefits associated with central environmental control: consistency of enforcement, efficiency of operation, ease of communication among enforcing agency, etc. Nonetheless, the decision to mine or not to mine is a landuse decision which, in substance, is similar to the decision to build a shopping mall, a new highway, or a housing subdivision. Although, state and federal governments' interests in the protection of public welfare are real and are expressed properly in mining laws and mining enforcement agencies (OSM, Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals, etc). I continue to maintain that the permitting and designation processes should originate with local government, which is in keeping with the American tradition of delegation of the land-use decision to local or regional government.

"A large-scale wildfire had broken out at Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada during May 2016. Many oil sands mining activities were affected due to the wildfire and the associated ash emissions. In particular, ash emission generated from the fire outbreak is a huge problem during the post-fire cleanup. These emissions pose a severe health hazard to workers, environment, and global climate. The ashes emitted into the atmosphere are caused by either human activities or climate conditions. The objective of this research is to assess the effect of three different ash dust suppressants, namely water, #1 surfactants, and #2 polymers at various volumetric concentrations on ashes samples to prevent propagation of fine solid emissions into the atmosphere. It is found that both #1 surfactants solution and #2 polymers solution are effective in retaining fugitive ash dust generated from the ashes. Volumetric concentration efficiency of 0.05% of #1 surfactant and 5% of #2 polymers in 500 ml of water have been proven to provide ash dust retention efficiency greater than 99% after the spraying of these suppressants. It is also found that both #1 surfactants solution and #2 polymers solution maintain an ash dust retention efficiency higher than that of the use of only water. This confirms the merit of using chemical dust suppressants on fugitive ash dust for a longer period, which is proven by the 72-hour data from this experiment. This study gives a general view of how effective chemical suppressants on fugitive ash emissions work. INTRODUCTION On May 1st, 2016, a large-scale wildfire gutted Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Many oil sands mining activities were affected due to the wildfire and the associated ash emission. Due to the wildfire, some of the biggest oil sands companies in Fort McMurray such as Royal Dutch Shell and Suncor Energy shut down their oil production, at 255,000 and 350,000 barrels per day respectively [1]. Syncrude Canada Ltd scaled down its normal production capacity level of 350,000 barrels per day [1]. This generated an estimated loss of about 1.1 million barrels of oil production per day, constituting a 30% reduction in the Canadian daily oil production, crippling the economy [2]. This loss in production by the companies translated into 0.33 % of the Alberta GDP in 2016 constituting a loss of $985 million and 0.06 % of the entire Canadian economy [3]. In 2017, it is estimated that the rebuilding and reclamation of the affected areas in Fort McMurray will add $ 1.3 billion in GDP to Alberta’s economy [3]. A population of over 90,000 people was evacuated from the location and its surroundings for health and safety reasons [4]. The fire destroyed about 2,400 structures and over 500,000 hectares of forest vegetation in Fort McMurray, leaving an estimated 232,000 tonne of post-fire ashes [5,6]."

Hydrologic and economic criteria figure in many obvious ways in water resources development, but they are rarely linked quantitatively, and most of the applications are pertinent only to the case-in-point. In the preparation of the Regional Plan for the massive program of ground water development in the Punjab, situations have arisen where the choice among two or more alternatives was made by analyzing the economic implications of critical hydrologic parameters. Two of these situations which are of more-or-less general interest are described herein. The first involves basic development policy -- whether ground water development should be based on the demand of the economy, or the conservation concept of safe-yield. The analysis demonstrated that mining of ground water is clearly indicated for areas where alternative supplies are unavailable. The second problem involves integrating hydrologic data into an economic model to determine optimum well design, From an analysis of all pertinent factors, a simple nomograph was derived which can be used to determine well specifications on-site during construction. The nomograph can be modified for use in any alluvial terrain.

Conducting full-scale fire experiments in underground mines is difficult and expensive. Sometimes, it is impossible to carry out fire tests in mines due to the danger they pose to mine workers and the underground facilities. However, understanding the potential occurrence of fires in a mine and their dynamics is critical to developing an appropriate emergency evacuation plan, fire suppression, and firefighting techniques. In this study, a numerical fire model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with fire dynamics simulator (FDS) 6.7.6 was developed to examine the influence of tunnel bifurcation on maximum temperature beneath a tunnel ceiling. The model was validated using full-scale experimental data. The maximum ceiling gas temperature predicted using FDS and measured maximum smoke temperature during the experiment shows good agreement. The study shows that bifurcation could lower the maximum ceiling temperature of fire-induced smoke in a subsurface environment. The findings from this study apply to the broader field of ventilation and fire life safety in tunnels and other underground environments.

Long-term stability, appropriate taxation and incentive policies are essential to attract and stimulate investment in the mineral sector. An outline of Ontario's $4.6 billion industry and associated tax incentives is presented. Producers are offered incentives under The Mining Tax Act, federal and provincial income tax acts for exploration and development by reducing Me after tax cost to 13-25¢ for each dollar spent. The Mining Tax Act provides generous processing incentives which have positive effects in enhancing investment and economic advantages of building processing facilities. Non-mining companies and entrepreneurial individuals can receive 25% of eligible exploration expenditures in grants/tax credits under the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program.

"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

"It is almost a given that post-disaster mine conditions will have compromised the mine ventilation system, resulting in a hazardous atmosphere in portions of the mine, and often complicated travel through debris fields and roof falls. Robotic technologies provide the opportunity to gather valuable information to assist decision making or lessen exposure to dangerous conditions. MSHA's Mine Emergency Operations Division (MEO) has utilized a fully permissible mine robot, the V2, for a number of years, constantly updating the unit as new technologies became available. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, as part of the MINER Act Extramural Contract Program, examined the need for additional robotic units and ultimately funded three different types of prototype technologies: two robots, the Snake Robot and the Gemini-Scout, and a mine rescue robotic assist vehicle known as the ""Mule"". The Snake Robot is designed to be lowered through a borehole and to conduct surveillance (gas monitoring, video and audio) in the immediate vicinity, while the Gemini-Scout, designed to be deployed in the mine opening, serves as a more mobile and agile exploratory tool as compared to the MSHA V2 robot. The Mule was developed in response to needs expressed by mine rescue teams for a versatile remotely operated support vehicle and it will move from prototype to MEO utilization in the near future. This paper describes the development of the robot prototypes and discusses their limitations in the prototype stage, possible enhancements and potential applications, as well as the utilization of the Mule. INTRODUCTION The conditions in a coal mine may be dramatically altered after a mine fire or explosion. For example, the ventilation system may not be functioning correctly as control devices may be compromised or damaged beyond repair. The visibility in the mine opening may be limited due to accumulated smoke and dust. Roof support systems may be damaged or no longer functional. Equipment and materials may be strewn about the mine opening. Debris fields, blocked openings, roof falls, flooded areas, gas accumulations and active burning make it very difficult or impossible for those managing the post-event emergency to permit mine rescue teams to enter the mine to conduct search and rescue operations. With the evolution of robots and robotic assist technology there has been a proliferation of purpose-built units for the military, police and law enforcement agencies, urban search and rescue and those contending with hazardous environmental conditions. In each case, the technology used is designed to limit human exposure to the unsafe conditions or to provide access to areas under difficult conditions. For example, a specially-designed marine robot has been deployed into the damaged core of the Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant to assess the conditions of the containment vessels, where melted fuel is believed to have accumulated. Human access to the area is prohibited due to dangerously elevated levels of radioactivity [1]. Multiple robots were deployed in Amatrice, Italy, to assist in the response after the 6.2-magnitude earthquake devastated the town. The robots were used to explore two medieval churches that were severely damaged and deemed too dangerous for human entry [2]. Tactical robots are regularly used by police and law enforcement agencies when the conditions of the emergency place intervening officers directly in harm's way [3]."

During the 1920's, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past twenty-five (25) years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated by the Glen-Gery Corporation which is located in eastern Pennsylvania; the National Lime and Stone Company which is located at Carey Ohio; and Holston Defense Corporation which is located at Kingsport, Tennessee. There are, however, numerous operating gasifiers in other parts of the world. Recent events indicate that this situation is changing. The quantity of domestic natural gas available to the interstate market has been declining at the same time that demand for all forms of energy has been increasing. The current potential market for gas with a heating value ranging from 100 to 500 Btu per cubic feet has been estimated at sixteen (16) quads (16 x 1015 Btu) per year. This is expected to grow to twenty (20) quads by the year 2000.

"This paper reports on the development of a simulation-based framework for obtaining optimal blast design parameters for a hard-rock mine. To do this, a conventional medium-sized hard-rock mine was taken as a case study. The mine has two pits containing hard and soft rock types. The proposed framework contains a combination of regression analysis using Excel software by Microsoft and discrete-event simulation using Arena software by Rockwell Automation, applied to construct a model of the material-handling network of the mine. Specifically, blasting parameters are estimated by Excel-based regression analysis, processes including blasting and haulage from pits to crushers are modeled by a Forward Blasting simulation submodel, and material-handling operations including crushing, storage in stockpile, and haulage via conveyors and into SAG and ball mills are modeled by a Crusher to Ball Mill simulation submodel. A Reverse Blasting submodel is then used to obtain the optimum blast design corresponding to a target P80 particle size. Using the proposed framework, an economic analysis was performed to demonstrate the cost savings that could be realized for each rock type as a function of specific explosive energy. IntroductionIn a modern hard-rock mine, various processes such as drilling, blasting, crushing, grinding and mineral liberation are optimized to increase productivity, a practice known as mine-to-mill (MTM) optimization. Blasting is important in MTM optimization as it is the first comminution process and has an impact on all downstream processes (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, 1996; Nielsen and Lownds, 1997; Nielsen and Malvik, 1999; Chung and Katsabanis, 2000; Kim and Kemeny, 2011a; Kim and Kemeny, 2011b).Two main research topics have emerged in the area of blasting design: (1) identifying the optimal target blast fragmentation at each shot and (2) controlling the blast fragmentation for that target. Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. Continuous interpretation of data transmitted from remote movement-sensitive devices and immediate communication of signficant changes to emergency personnel were made possible by a readily available "home" computer. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organization is not trivial.
