With the world’s ever-growing push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source of rare earths found in the United States is bastnaesite, a rare-earth-bearing fluorocarbonate, mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it has been essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to capture current reserves. This paper presents the results of a research program conducted to expand the understanding of the bastnaesite leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge and thermodynamic calculations, a novel single-stage hydrochloric acid leach system was created to optimize the extraction of rare earths from bastnaesite. Historically, this extraction has entailed the use of a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach followed by a caustic crack. We ran a series of single-stage leach experiments by reacting locked-cycle flotation concentrate with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these single-stage tests showed significantly higher rare-earth recoveries than the reported recoveries of the historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the number and amount of reagents needed.

A pilot scale study was performed to evaluate the potential for gravity concentration of gold from -13 mm (-1/2"), crushed ore from Ester Dome, Alaska. 9.04 tonnes (9.94 tons) of crushed ore were sampled and processed through a Pan-American jig -Wifley table pilot plant. Plant products were sampled for assay and material balance calculations. Gold recovery through one stage of jigging and two stages of tabling was 17.4% at a concentration ratio of 615:1. Concentrate grade was 766.3 g/tonne (22.4 oz/ton). The feed grade to the plant was calculated at 1.71 g/tonne (0.050z/ton). Jig tailings, primary table tailings and secondary table tailings grades were 1.44 g/tonne (0.042), 1.30 g/tonne (0.038), and 5.47 g/tonne (0.16 oz/ton) respectively. Significant, coarse, free milling gold values were shown to remain in the jig tailings. Concentrate mineralogy is discussed.

An understanding of the spatial and temporal variations of surface moisture content over a heap leach pad is essential for leaching production and to achieve a high ore recovery. The current leach-pad monitoring and data-collection practice remains highly labor intensive and exposes technical staff to cyanide solution, a hazardous material. To address these challenges, we propose using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal imaging sensors to remotely obtain image data with high temporal and spatial resolution for monitoring the surface moisture distribution over heap leach pads. A field study was conducted over a sprinkler-irrigated heap leach pad at El Gallo gold mine in Sinaloa, Mexico, and the acquired data were used to generate moisture distribution maps of the heap leach pad’s surface. The created moisture maps provide direct visualizations of surface moisture variation over the surveyed area. Such graphical results are effective tools for inspecting heap-leaching operations.

The disaster at the Upper Big Branch (UBB) mine 2010 has demonstrated the destructive violence of a coal dust explosion by killing 29 miners in the worst mining accident the United States has experienced in almost 40 years. This explosion brought to light that the United States mining industry must strengthen explosion prevention and explosion hazard detection practices. Recent legislation such as the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) pushed the strengthening of explosion and disaster response and miner protection in addition to stricter regulations on the sealing of abandoned areas and on conveyor belt flame resistance. The focus of this new act was on how to respond to a disaster or explosion, yet not much improvement was made with respect to prevention explosion disasters. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have recently concluded extensive research into methane and coal dust explosion prevention practices and regulations as it may be applicable to underground mines in the United States. This research aims to forward more studies into the use and adoption of standards and procedures that have been utilized in countries with strong explosion prevention histories.

Metallurgical coal is an essential component for the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking process, which accounts for roughly 70% of total global steel production. To meet the growing demand for metallurgical coal, Arch Resources identified the potential to recover low- ash coal from ultra-fines discarded prior to the deslime flotation circuit across their portfolio of operations. Historically, many flotation circuits were designed to discard this ultra-fine coal due to high clay content and technological barriers to cost-effectively upgrade and dewater the coal to a saleable product. Recent advancements in high-intensity flotation technology, including the Eriez StackCell, have enabled coal producers to recover ultra-fine coal while minimizing capital and operating costs. In July 2023, Arch Resources commissioned the first full-scale ultra-fines recovery circuit utilizing StackCell high-intensity flotation technology at the Leer Mining Complex. This paper reviews the approach utilized to develop the flotation process design, learnings from the commissioning and ramp-up period, and performance data through the first year of operation.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. According to accident statistics (l, 2), roof fall accidents occur quite frequently at the intersections of underground? openings and account for up to 30% of the roof fall fatalities. But this figure will certainly go up considerably if roof falls not associated with any fatal accident are included in the analysis. Unfortunately, nonfatal roof falls are seldom documented. In the underground coal mines, there are two types of entry intersections. One is the three-way (V type) and the other is the four-way (T type) intersections. A three-way intersection occurs whenever the mainline track haulageway turns at an angle into a section haulageway. The four-way intersections by far the most common type in the U.S. under-ground coal mines are formed by the intersections of two entries which are oriented perpendicular to each other or by the intersections of entries and crosscuts. However, crosscuts are frequently driven at an angle to the entry to facilitate machine movements. The four-way intersections formed by this method of crosscut development are angled. At the intersection of two underground openings, the diagonal roof span is wider than the width of each individual opening. This is one of the major reasons why roof falls occur more likely at the intersections than in the entry between pillars. Consequently, special intersection support plans are usually employed (Figs. 1 and 2) for intersections. The most popular practices are to decrease roof bolt spacing 1 ft. less than or to increase roof bolt length 1 to 2 ft. longer than those employed in the entry between pillars (3). The increase in bolt length or decrease in bolt spacing can be applied to all of the bolts in the intersection or employed only for the strategically located bolts depending on the individual mine practices. These rather generalized practices seems to be adequate for some areas but in many cases inadequate for others. Occasionally, the neighboring two lines of chain pillars are staggered such that the crosscuts in one row of chain pillars face the centers of the chain pillars in the neigh-boring rows. This layout forms T-type three-way intersections which are also inadequate for most weak roofs (3, 4). A study was therefore initiated to develop special techniques for intersection supports. The first phase of the study was the analysis of the stress fields for the underground entry intersections. A three-dimensional stress analysis was necessary for this purpose. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional problems of complicated boundary conditions are beyond the existing analytical methods. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was therefore employed in this study. In the analysis, square pillars of 40 feet wide and an entry height of 8 feet were assumed while entry widths varied at 14, 20 and 26 feet. This model was selected to simulate the mine where roof falls data were collected. The second phase of the study was the collection of field data. The sizes of the roof falls including heights, lengths and widths were collected and analyzed. In the third phase study, the results of the first and second phases were compared and discussed. The analysis of field data revealed an arching zone within which roof falls occurred. The arching zone above an entry obtained empirically was compared with the calculated stress contours. Assuming that the bolts must be anchored in the rock strata outside the arching zone, the preferable systems of bolting were proposed. Also the amount of pretension required to inhibit sliding between layers was discussed.

INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. Theoretical structural analysis and practical experience show that ground-support problems in the undercutting drifts and in underlying access openings as well (the same princi¬ple applies even if undercutting is done by belling out drawpoints from the slusher drifts) are minimized by retreat-mining across the undercut slot according to a sequence such that the growing undercut area retains a

A common casualty of modern open pit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can really be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period. And grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow, and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper all of these problems are addressed by encoding these three fundamental open pit mine optimization problems as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are non-linear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot. INTRODUCTION Open pit mines are large and complicated operations, which require significant initial and ongoing investment. A single mine may employ hundreds or thousands of people and creates substantial benefits for both the surrounding and global communities. Planning an operation of this magnitude requires a lot of effort and cannot be done optimally by hand. Mining engineers today rely on many techniques from operations research to guide decision making, and to maximize the value of the mine. Techniques including linear programming, metaheuristics, and network algorithms are all used to solve different problems throughout mine design and optimization. However, techniques based on Boolean satisfiability, including the optimization extension of maximum satisfiability, have not seen much use in mining despite being used in many other fields including electronics design, scheduling, and artificial intelligence. We claim that maximum satisfiability is a useful and meaningful way of expressing and solving optimization problems in mine planning. However, this technique does not come without challenges; the problem is NP-hard, and modern techniques for solving these problems can struggle with the number of variables and clauses that a typical mining problem requires. Also, some of the constraints that mining must contend with do not fit nicely into the satisfiability paradigm. Despite these challenges, we believe that maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for considering operational constraints and expressing some problems that other techniques can't easily express. Maximum satisfiability can be solved exactly, yielding the true optimal answer which metaheuristics cannot guarantee. In this paper we show the applicability of maximum satisfiability to mining by specifying three fundamental problems in open pit mine optimization. We show how these fundamental problems can be formulated and how they can be extended within the framework of maximum satisfiability. For the remainder of the paper we first give a brief background on common elements between the three problems and an introduction to satisfiability. Then we tackle the three problems; the Ultimate Pit Problem, the Block Scheduling Problem, and the Grade Control Polygon Problem. In the Ultimate Pit Problem we specifically show how to extend the problem to support a minimum mining width – a coveted result for many mining engineers. We then discuss some of the complexities and shortcomings of this framework and possible research directions.

Nickel demand is increasing along with the rising need for stainless steel and other alloy steel/iron. The small addition of nickel in such materials can improve impact strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. Nickel is generally obtained from nickel sulfide ores (nickel associated with sulfur) and nickel laterite ores (nickel associated with iron and magnesium silicate). Almost 60 percent of nickel is now produced from sulfide ores, despite its existence in sulfide ores being less than in laterite ores. However, the depletion of sulfide ore reserves makes the mastery of nickel laterite ore processing of important and immediate concern. Selective reduction followed by magnetic separation has been in development in lateritic nickel ore processing to overcome the issues of high energy consumption and pollution associated with conventional pyrometallurgy methods such as blast furnace and rotary kiln electric arc furnace (RKEF).

The natural lives of machines and components vary tremendously! Maintenance managers struggle constantly to maximize their equipment lives while minimizing their maintenance costs, but they normally lack the tools and techniques they need to do this properly. This paper proposes a methodology based on probabilities of failure and expected values for repairs that recognizes the variation among individual machines and components as well as the high costs associated with catastrophic failures. It enables a user to determine the optimum change-out intervals for many types of equipment. The approach proposed here is sophisticated enough to be reliable but simple enough to be applied by the maintenance staff on the shop floor. It will complement existing preventive and predictive maintenance programs.

"The Sierra Gorda SCM sulfide ore processing plant began commissioning in the third quarter of 2014. Located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, the project is an open pit mine and Copper-Molybdenum processing plant is one of the most highly-instrumented operations in the world. It is the first hard rock operation in Chile and the second in South America to utilize HPGR technology. It is a significant Molybdenum resource especially in the first five years and the Molybdenum separation plant is complex. Designed to process up to 60 million lbs. of fine Molybdenum per year, it uses the latest technology and equipment to ensure superior recovery and product quality. It also has gas handling and alarm systems to fulfil the Company’s vision of “Zero Harm”. This paper discusses the overall operation and issues relating to the concentrator start-up. These include a review of the mineral processing design, the unified process control center and management information systems, and the correlation of geological and metallurgical performance data (mine-to-mill) for use in anticipating and preparing for treatment of diverse ore deliveries. INTRODUCTION Sierra Gorda SCM is a joint venture partnership with KGHM International (owned by KGHM SA, Poland), Sumitomo Metal Mining, and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan) operating in northern Chile. The Sierra Gorda open pit mine and Copper-Molybdenum processing plant will become one of the largest mines in the world. The need for optimum production efficiency and sustainability has driven the creation of the most modern, well-instrumented mine in Chile. This paper contains a general review of the project including geology and history. This was a very fast-track project going from greenfield site acquisition to mill start-up in 10 years. Highly-experienced and motivated engineers and technical staff have overcome many significant challenges resulting in a rapid ramp-up of production capacity. A potential expansion to double the production rate in the fourth year of operation has also been intensely studied. The Sierra Gorda property is located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, in the District of Sierra Gorda, Region II of Antofagasta, Chile (see Figure 1). There is almost no precipitation in this area. The mine site is generally flat with some rolling hills. The project is located about 5 km from the village of Sierra Gorda at an elevation of approximately 1,700 m above mean sea level. The village is near a highway and railway line. The city of Calama, home of the famous Chuquicamata Mine, is located about 60 km northeast of Sierra Gorda. In addition, the SG mine is in the midst of numerous other mines including Spence, Esperanza, Mantos Blancos, El Tesoro, Lomas Bayas, Gabriela Mistral, El Abra, Radomiro Tomic, and Escondida, to name a few."

The proposed Flambeau Mining Project is based on a high grade copper deposit located approximately one mile southwest of Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The project involves only the mining, crushing, and shipping of ore to facilities outside of Wisconsin for processing. The Wisconsin environmental regulations include provisions for identifying wetlands, the requirements for minimizing the disturbance of wetlands, and the need to establish new wet-lands to replace any wetlands which have to be disturbed.

In the 1990?s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead?s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Separation of refractory rock phosphate (P2O5 = 11.5%) from the Dalir area, Iran, containing quartz, calcite and other impurities, by calcination and flotation processes has been successfully used to upgrade the phosphate values. Petrographic studies of this ore showed that collophanite was the major phosphate mineral and the main gangue minerals were calcite, dolomite and quartz. The results of characterization studies showed that the liberation degree of apatite occurred below the average grain size of 140 µm. Preliminary flotation tests were used to process the phosphate samples. Results of preliminary flotation tests showed that they don?t contain any desirable efficiency (grade or recovery) of P2O5. Calcination was the best process for preconcentration of this ore. In the desliming stage, about 14.4% of total P2O5 was removed. Encouraging concentrate grades were obtained after flotation with anionic and cationic flotation, successively. The reagent schemes that have been used in this study consisted of COCO-amine acetate and fatty acid as silicate and apatite collectors, respectively, as well as fuel oil and anionic poly acryl amid as promoter collectors. The optimum pH values for direct and reverse flotations of phosphate were 11 and 6, respectively. Experiments conducted using d80=140 µm deslimed fractions has yielded an acceptable grade of more than 30% P2O5 with a recovery of more than 62%. "So many talks, so little time.One of the toughest challenges associated with attending the SME Annual Conference and Expo is deciding how to allocate one’s resources. After accounting for keynote and plenary sessions, committee meetings, networking events, luncheons and exhibits, attending even one of the 109 technical sessions and more than 600 technical paper presentations can be a labor of love. Many, however, managed to make it to many of the sessions, including the mineral and metallurgical processing technical session on solvent extraction, ion exchange and electrowinning.At one point, that room was seated to near capacity, with a considerable number of the audience members standing by the walls at the back. Brittany Valera of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. was one who came early and enjoyed the session in its entirety. "Everything was pretty exciting," she said. "I really liked the modular plants. I think the future of mining, just like what we talked about in there, lies in thinking about things like remote locations, lifetimes of plants, anything that would be reusable and sustainable; and lower-cost and user-friendly would be really beneficial."Michael Moats, associate professor of metallurgical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, started off the session by presenting on behalf of post-doctoral student Alex Luyima, who, like many before him, had been snapped up by industry and is now working for a secondary-metals refining company in Texas. Their team studied the nucleation and growth mechanism of copper on stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate in the absence and presence of chloride ions and three commercial organic additives: Hydrostar 4208, DXG-F7 and Cyquest N-900. Currenttime data were analyzed using known models, with reference to scanning electron microscope images. Good agreement was achieved between the models and SEM micrographs of deposits at a commercially relevant current density of 30 mA/ cm2. The addition of 20 mg/L chloride was found to increase the size and reduce the number of nuclei. The addition of 2.5 mg/L of each additive did not change the mechanism, but all three reduced the size and increased the number of nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the substrate with smoother deposits produced in twohour electrowinning experiments. N-900 had the best deposition coverage while DXG-7 was the easiest to dissolve."

We present an algorithm to integrate the uncertainties of mean activity rate and magnitude cumulative distribution function in the interval estimation of the primary seismic hazard parameters: the exceedance probability and the mean return period. The algorithm is applicable for both the parametric and nonparametric modeling of magnitude distribution. When the Gutenberg-Richter relation-based parametric model of magnitude distribution is used, the interval estimation of its parameters is based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators. When the nonparametric kernel estimation of magnitude distribution is used, we apply the iterated bias-corrected and accelerated method for the interval estimation, based on the smoothed bootstrap and second-order bootstrap samples. Previous studies indicated that the uncertainty of mean activity rate significantly affects the interval estimates of hazard functions only when the activity rate is low and the inference period is not long (Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki 2017). With increasing mean activity rate, the uncertainty of magnitude distribution dominates over the uncertainty of mean activity rate in the aggregated uncertainty of the hazard functions. The provided algorithm is generic and can be applied to capture the uncertainty of any multiparameter function from the uncertainties of its parameters. Here we present a further development of the algorithm developed by Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki (2017) by presenting its implementation in the Traffic Light System approach. As an example of use, we present the confidence intervals estimation of hazard parameters for the datasets related to induced seismicity accompanying underground exploitation of copper ore in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD) in Poland. The algorithm is under implementation to the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/) - an IT platform that provides access to integrated research infrastructures of the Thematic Core Service of Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS AH) of EPOS (European Plate Observing System). The algorithm is also a component of the pilot developed within the EPOS SP project (No 871121), which aims to strengthen the interaction with the private sector and the added value for society. The pilot demonstrates the potential of the IS-EPOS platform software applications for the technology-related probabilistic assessment of time-dependent seismic hazard. The pilot supports a Traffic Light System approach. The current seismic hazard is compared to threshold values based on the exceedance probability for a given magnitude.

Fluid flow phenomena and therefore the flotation efficiency of air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation are strongly dependent on the operating and design variables such as air flow rate, slurry flow rate, underflow and overflow opening areas, percent solids in the feed, reagent levels, particle size, ASH length, etc. Time-averaged multiphase flow characteristics, as deter-mined by x-ray CT and described in a previous publication, are used to understand and explain the steady-state ASH flotation of quartz. A detailed parametric study of quartz flotation by a nominal 2-inch diameter air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH-2C) revealed the influence of these variables on the flotation response which is discussed in terms of the multiphase flow characteristics. Thus, a phenomenological description of quartz flotation has been established to assist in the further development and utilization of the ASH technology.

BRS, Inc. has utilized Carlson's Natural RegradeTM software to design the reclamation and stabilization of abandoned open pit uranium mine spoils, AML Project 16N, located in the Gas Hills Uranium District in central Wyoming. This work was completed for the State of Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land Program (AML) on preSMCRA (Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act) sites for which no reclamation obligation existed. The project successfully stabilized an eroding spoil dump, enhanced the local view shed, created habitat diversity and provided a significant source of fill material for open pit highwall hazard mitigation efforts. Additionally, the project served to evaluate innovative reclamation design methods, engineering software and grade control technology. This project was nominated for a National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs award by the State of Wyoming. The results of this project will be presented as a case history of the Natural RegradeTM approach to surface mine reclamation. Based on the successful application of this new mine reclamation technology on the AML 16N Project, reclamation designs for spoils associated with planned underground uranium mine operations at the Velvet Mine in the Lisbon Valley Uranium District of Utah for Uranium One USA, Inc have been prepared and will be presented. Critical elements will be the encapsulation of unsuitable materials, long term hydrologic stability, and sequencing and staging of ore and mine waste for final reclamation surface construction. The goal of the Uranium One Velvet Project will be to apply best available technology to reclamation planning and fully integrate the reclamation design with the mine planning. Benefits of the approach should include improved public and regulatory perception of the project, facilitate mine permit approvals and the eventual timely release of reclamation bonds, as it is anticipated the stable landform created through this process will result in more rapid stabilization of the site to pre-mine geomorphic conditions. NATURAL REGRADETM CASE STUDY AML Project 16N, D-9 and K Pit Reclamation Project, is located in an intensely disturbed area of the West Gas Hills Uranium Mining District in Fremont County, Wyoming. The overall design calls for the placement of approximately 7 million cubic yards of backfill materials in the D9 and K Pits, imported from adjacent mine spoils including the Central Spoils, and from local highwall excavation. Figure 1 shows the location of the Central Spoils excavation area, as well as the D9 and K Pits fill area. The entire project is located on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Lander, Wyoming District Office. No access controls are in place at the abandoned mine sites. The public lands are administered under a multiple use land policy including grazing of range land, public recreation, active mining and exploration, and oil and gas. The project site is located along Fremont County Road No. 5, which is a moderately well traveled road. Reclamation of the numerous and large abandoned open pits in the Gas Hills Uranium District has reduced the risk of death or injury to the public. Site History and Background The Gas Hills Uranium District was mined by multiple companies during the period from 1955 to 1981. The uranium was hosted in the Wind River formation, a sequence of soft sedimentary layers of interbedded sandstone, clayey shales, and conglomerates. Uranium was precipitated out of ground water in classic roll front deposits, which are found from very near surface to depths greater than 400 feet. Prior to the enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), very little reclamation work was performed when mines were abandoned or closed. The State of Wyoming Abandoned Mine Lands Program has worked to mitigate hazards associated with large open pits, control migration of unsuitable materials and restore watershed functionality of lands in the district. Additional reclamation is being performed by mining companies on bonded lands. Figure 2, Gas Hills Uranium District aerial photograph, shows the extent of the mining disturbance in the district. [ ] Project Hazards and Concerns The purpose of AML Project 16N is to mitigate hazardous conditions and risk to the public associated with open pit highwalls and toxic, acid forming, and /or radioactive mine waste materials. The D9 and K Pits are contiguous open pits characterized by an 8,800 foot long hazardous highwall that averages over 200 feet tall. Laramide porphyry copper deposits are large, low grade (<0.8% Cu) deposits that contain disseminated copper minerals, breccias, and stockwork veinlets of copper and molybdenum sulfides associated with porphyritic intrusions in Southwestern New Mexico. Critical minerals, such as PGEs, tellurium, indium, germanium, and gallium are recovered from the anode slimes remaining after copper is refined. Detailed age dating, mineralogy, geochemistry, along with geologic mapping could refine the location of critical minerals within specific systems and could identify porphyry systems with elevated critical minerals that could become economic, in addition to the already produced copper, gold and molybdenum.
