Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, or explosive. Others serve as early reporters of impending problems. Mines monitor these gases in order to ensure the safe, efficient operation of the facility and avoid losses or disasters. Two different approaches to monitor these gases have historically been taken. One kind of device measures the amount of each gas present by using selective detectors (e.g. handhelds and spectrometers). Another kind separates the mixture of gases into the individual constituents, then measures the amount of each gas present (e.g. gas chromatographs). Handheld units are the most widely used, but gas chromatographs are the most powerful yet underutilized units available to enhance mining operations. There are many misconceptions about the nature, applicability and proper use of each type of device, and little data is available. Up to this point, many people had only the manufacturers? claims to guide them. This study was undertaken to clarify the range of applicability, important characteristics, and value in use of these units in real-world situations. An additional goal of the study was to provide ways to evaluate comparative data, and thus aid mining operations in choosing the most beneficial and reasonable ways to use such devices in various situations and contexts.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd') rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco's total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World's copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata's known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. When you think of the state of Maine, you probably think of lobsters or lighthouses. The last thing you would think of is metallic mineral mining, and that is for good reason. According to the Maine Geological Survey?s website, ?no metals have been mined in Maine since 1977.? Moreover, Maine?s metallic mineral mining laws and rules, which were last rewritten in 1991, have effectively made mining in the Pine Tree State impossible. Statutory changes enacted in 2012, however, put Maine on a path to make metallic mineral mining part of the local economy in the near future. History of metallic mineral mining in Maine Currently, Maine is not a metallic mineral mining state, though that has not always been the case. The 1800s saw various mining operations in Maine, including what the Maine Geological Survey calls a ?mining boom? from 1879 to 1882, where mining of iron, silver, copper, lead and zinc expanded rapidly. Mining and mining activity in the more recent past, however, drove the debate before the state legislature when this issue was debated in 2012.

Operational excellence is generally known as a management system integrated across critical functions that is geared towards continually improving operational performance. Functional areas such as health, environment and safety, quality and human resources are the focus of many corporate-wide operational excellence programs. Operational excellence also focuses on improving areas such as customer orientation, employee empowerment as well as process, and systems optimization. It is widely viewed as critical to sustaining business performance improvement. Although it is difficult to find a universally accepted definition, or even common foundation in many respects, operational excellence remains a popular term in the business world. Many organizations have developed their own version of organization excellence, influenced by such individual factors, other similar institutions or even third-party service providers. A mining organization is no different from other organizations in that adopting and implementing effective operational excellence programs can dramatically improve business execution and performance across regional or global interests. This paper brings together various perspectives of operational excellence and reconciles them for a useful composite for the mining industry. While most agree that operational excellence should include normal functions in a manufacturing operation such as production, maintenance and engineering and processes such as quality, environmental and continuous improvement, many other factors for operational excellence seem to vary from perspective to perspective. Thus, programs that manufacturers engage in may seem the same, but may, in fact, be different in key areas. This may affect organizational performance in tangible ways. Management must buy into the company?s definition of operational excellence and be dedicated to achieving it. A review of many of the existing definitions of operational excellence, explicit or embedded as part of a program, seems to yield the following common factors: ? It should help organizations better execute their processes and services. ? It should be geared towards improving quality ? It requires that the various operations should be aligned with the overall enterprise strategy. ? It should be geared towards continuous improvement. A composite of operational excellence definitions suggest that it is: ? Geared towards helping the organization achieve sustained profitability; ? tied to strategic alignment and business objectives; ? tied to solid investment strategies; ? integrated as part of the culture, process, time plan and performance; ? a relevant performance measurement system; ? extended to include all aspects of the supply chain (including external suppliers); ? integrated with health, safety and environmental (HSE) aspects. And, while the pursuit of operational excellence intuitively suggests that businesses should improve, it is very difficult to achieve given the difficult challenges facing companies today. Mining businesses face numerous pressures to perform in a global marketplace such as demand, energy cost, variable cost and pricing fluctuations as well as infrastructure challenges to further confound the environment. The Northeast Corridor Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) entails construction of a high-speed train system between Washington, DC and New York City, with the first leg between Washington and Baltimore, MD. This innovative project will shorten travel times between Washington DC and Baltimore to approximately 15 minutes, and connect Washington, DC to New York City in under an hour. In 2021 the draft EIS is expected to be issued for comment with a Final EIS/ROD anticipated by early 2022. This paper provides an update on the project as presented in Gall et al. (2020) and discusses the economic and environmental benefits, preferred alignment alternative, preliminary staging and launching of the TBMs for construction, and preliminary station design.

The adsorption of silver on activated carbon from cyanide solutions was studied as a function of concentration, ionic strength and pH. In cyanide solutions, silver exists mainly as the linear Ag(CN)2 complex and adsorbs on activated carbon following the Freundlich isotherm. The uptake and rate of adsorption increase with the addition of KC1 and KNO3 but changes only slightly with pH. In contrast, the adsorption of Cu(I), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) shows marked changes with pH, closely following the predominance profiles of their neutral and singly-charged cyano complexes. Clearly, multicharged negative complexes are repelled by the negatively-charged carbon surface. This sensitivity of activated carbon to the charge of the adsorbing species indicates that silver adsorbs as an anion, not chemically bound to the co-adsorbing counterions. For the same reason, activated carbon is selective to metals that form neutral and Singly-charged cyano complexes, namely gold and silver.

My subject is gold price forecasting and monitoring as an important aspect of gold marketing. While I 'm specifically addressing gold, it is understandable that many other commodities could be readily substituted. Gold marketing must be studied as three distinct processes, and it is my intention to cover each of these processes in turn. First I?ll cover the process of gold price monitoring and forecasting in some detail. In order to select a method, or combination of methods, to be used to sell gold a determination of the future price profile is essential. The profitability of the sales effort will be determined, to a large extent, by how accurately the future price behavior of the gold market has been forecast.

Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on their mine plans. Incorporating changes such as commodity prices, customer sales, fluctuating cost assumptions and newly acquired geologic data requires quick turnaround for model building and planning to keep mine plans on pace with changes as they occur. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. To meet these challenges, one leading North American mining company successfully increased the frequency rate and accuracy of its mine plans to stay current with incoming data, ensuring its mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

The application of digitization to operations and logistics is commonplace. From advanced data analytics to intelligent networks, digitization offers tremendous opportunities to create value, raise the efficiency of production processes, and reduce emissions. Several manufacturing industries have already implemented solutions to good effect by using digitization. Mining companies, for example, are using historical data about equipment health to predict potential failures, while aeronautics and automotive companies are using robotics and end-to-end digital twins to improve their design and production processes. Not surprisingly, first adopters of digitization in many industries have gained an edge over their competition. The cement and aggregate industry can better manage the enormous energy consumption, rising cost challenges, inefficient uses of raw material, logistic problems, emissions, and overall process complexity that are inherent in their operations by doing the same. This paper presents the results of a literature review and analysis and conveys the challenges for adaptation and implementation of digitization and artificial intelligence (AI) in the cement and aggregate production industry.

The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer's machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

It is widely recognized that Semiautogenous Grinding (SAG) circuits require the use of effective process control techniques to achieve their full processing potential and to protect them from the harmful effects of overloads and grind-outs. This requirement is even more essential as the variability of the ore being processed increases. The new Chino Mines Company concentrator located near Santa Rita, New Mexico started operation in June of 1982. At least eight major rock types are mined and milled. Ore hardness, feed size, and specific gravity are quite variable. Typical feed rates per grinding line are 850-900 tph but extremes of 260-1200 tph have been encountered. Normal feed rate variations of between 400 and 1100 tph are encountered on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. Feed size varies with rock type from a maximum of eight inches for the harder ores to two inches for the softer ores. One somewhat unique characteristic of the Santa Rita ore body among major copper mines is the wide variation in ore specific gravity. Specific gravities of the major rock types range between 2.7 and 3.6. The specific gravity variations are due to large changes in magnetite concentration throughout the pit. The result of this is large variations in SAG mill throughput which can have a harmful effect on downstream ball milling and flotation performance. Due to these wide fluctuations in ore characteristics, it was recognized soon after startup that successful operation of the grinding circuit and the plant at large was dependent upon the development of an effective automatic grinding control strategy. Research at the University of Utah has suggested that control based upon critical but difficult or costly to measure variables would improve automatic control performance. A project team made up of the Chino process control staff, Kennecott's Process Control department and the University of Utah Metallurgy Department was established to assess these concepts at Chino. This paper describes the development and on-line plant implementation of an Extended Kalman Filter that uses simple models of the SAG milling process, to predict the volumetric loading, the rock mass, the water mass, and the ball mass within the SAG mills at Chino. The on-line estimation of these parameters is the first step in the development of an integrated SAG mill/ball mill control strategy which is hoped to L eventually maintain the grinding circuit at its maximum capacity, while balancing the grinding load between the SAG and ball mills. Examples of long term estimation with the models and filter are shown for typical operating conditions as well as a SAG mill overload and grind-out.

A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

Grinding and classification circuits at Climax Molybdenum Co. are described. Since the installation of a direct digital control computer in 1974, a number of control strategies were developed and evaluated. This paper deals in particular with the practical experience and results obtained in direct digital control of a wet grinding circuit consisting of a ball mill, constant speed sump pump, and hydrocyclones. For this circuit throughput is maximized, while maintaining a desired product size. Product size is inferred from measurement of operating variables.

The Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control Authority (DELCORA) will be adding tunnel infrastructure to its wastewater conveyance system. This program involves the construction of a conveyance/storage tunnel and related facilities. The proposed 12- foot to 14-foot (±) finished diameter, TBM mined deep rock tunnel spans over 8.5 miles and lies approximately 80 ft-120 ft below the surface. The system is connected to the surface by at least five vertical online shafts and one offline shaft with associated 800ft long adit. This paper provides project details including data on the geologic conditions in which the tunnel will be constructed.

The Coal Pillar Rib Rating (CPRR) technique has been developed to assist in rib support design in underground coal mines. One major challenge of the data collection process is the measurement of coal strengths in the field. Schmidt hammer has been verified as a useful tool to determine coal strength. An alternative approach is to obtain the representative strength of coal mass by determining the coal lithotypes in the field based on the coal brightness profile by experienced geologists or mining engineers. In this paper, image processing techniques have been used to quantify the texture of coal images of different lithotypes with the purpose of classifying coal lithotypes. The coal images were collected from the pillar ribs with exposed surfaces in underground coal mines, and the coal lithotypes were identified when taking the images. The method of Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) was used to analyze the textures of coal images of different lithotypes, and the texture parameters, such as contrast, homogeneity, energy, and entropy, were compared. The results show that the images of coal with different lithotypes have different textures, which can be quantified through the image processing. The results from this study demonstrate the potential of classifying coal lithotypes using rib photos and easing the data collection process of CPRR.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

The general application of memory cutting technology to shearers is improving the intelligence of the working face, but it has its limitations. It is only suitable for conditions where the environment of coal seam is changing slowly. "Titanium and titanium alloys are commonly selected for pressure oxidation autoclave vent piping and pressure control valve components, as well as autoclave internals and other process piping. In the autoclave vent application, titanium ignition risk is controlled by limiting oxygen concentration, and preventing high gas velocity gas impingement on surfaces. Oxygen concentration is dependent on the autoclave pressure and temperature operating conditions and therefore oxygen concentration and the associated titanium ignition risk is dependent on standard operating procedures, process control interlocks and permissive conditions. It is not uncommon for these standard controls to be deficient during atypical operating conditions, or for operations to deviate from the operating procedures, increasing the potential for a titanium ignition incident. Titanium ignition risk caused by elevated oxygen concentration in autoclave vent systems can be reduced with the introduction of an online autoclave overpressure calculation and the configuration of associated interlocks and permissive conditions. INTRODUCTION High temperature pressure oxidation (>190°C) is a well recognized and versatile metallurgical oxidative pre-treatment process commonly used to liberate gold from refractory sulphide ores and concentrates before conventional leaching with cyanide. Titanium and titanium alloys are highly corrosion resistant in pressure oxidation process conditions and are therefore commonly selected as materials of construction for many components including: autoclave internals, agitators, process piping, and components in autoclave vent systems. Operations that anticipate or have experienced aggressive corrosion in the vent system often have little choice in material selection other than the use of titanium (Krag & Henson, 1992). Titanium is not suitable for use with elevated oxygen concentrations and is considered a restricted material because of its high pyrophoricity and combustion propagation properties (Beeson, Smith, Stewart, 2007). Several serious incidents have occurred in which titanium materials have ignited in autoclave applications (Zawierucha, McIllroy, Million, 1995). In autoclave vent applications, titanium ignition risk is reduced by preventing elevated oxygen concentrations, maintaining low gas velocities, and minimizing the potential for gas impingement on surfaces. Oxygen concentration in the autoclave vapour phase and vent system is dependent on the autoclave operating pressure and temperature conditions and therefore titanium ignition prevention controls typically include process interlocks and operating procedures based on the selected nominal design operating conditions. However, it is not uncommon for these controls to be deficient or for operations to deviate from the nominal operating conditions over time, increasing the risk of titanium ignition. The introduction of an online calculation of autoclave overpressure and a maximum target autoclave pressure as well as associated process control interlocks and permissive conditions can alert the autoclave control room operator and prevent an elevated oxygen concentration from developing, and therefore reduce titanium ignition risk in autoclave vent systems."

The known northern ore zones of the New Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri extend to the drainage divide between the Meramec River draining north and east and that of the Black River draining southward. Intensive geochemical studies related to the environmental impact of the new mining area have been carried out in the vicinity of some of the newly developed mines, mills and smelter complexes (Bolter,1970; Gale, et al, 1973; Wixson, et al, 1969, 1977). Other investigations have related to fringe studies of the Northern New Lead Belt and the possible additions of heavy metals to the surface waters, stream sediments and selected aquatic life (Proctor, et al, 1975, 1976). Similar studies have been completed in the Joplin area in the Tri-State district, and in the fringe area near Springfield, Missouri (Proctor, et al, 1974). A surface geochemical study is currently underway on the lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel province near Fredericktown, Missouri (Proctor and Sinha, 1977). This report summarizes some of the distribution patterns of heavy metals in the waters, stream sediments and selected aquatic life in the Upper Meramec River drainage basin just north and west of the known northern portions of the New Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. The region studied includes the site of the proposed and somewhat controversial Meramec Dam and the reservoir site behind it. Some 3905 km2 (1508 mi2) are included within the drainage basin of the Upper Meramec River. Six distinct drainage areas are included within the drainage basin; 1) a combined, lightly industrialized and farm area around Rolla and Salem, Missouri representing the Dry Fork drainage; 2) a primitive, mostly forested area with some farms and cattle rancheseast and north of Salem, Missouri comprising the Upper Meramec River
