The choice of equipment to be applied to a given installation by the Application Engineer begins with the data as presented to him by the user. This point in the relationship establishes a communication link, which will decide whether or not the correct piece of Overhead Equipment is applied at the most economic advantage to the user. The role played by the user cannot be minimized. No one knows better than he, just what work he expects to accomplish with this piece of machinery. However, all too often, he oversimplifies the requirements, and along with minimal crane and building parameters, merely refers to one of the following crane classifications as defined by The Crane Manufacturing Association of America, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. This approach places the ultimate user in an unfair position, since he has then assumed the status of the machinery designer and must, therefore, assume the responsibility of the success or failure of the operation of that piece of machinery. If the user selects a Class "C" crane for his job requirement, when actually a Class "B" crane can adequately handle the work load, he is not offering the most economic solution to his company and added little to the cranes service capabilities.

"In order to sustain the operations in chromite processing plants, due to concentrate selling cost, plants are in need of optimization in terms of capacity and recovery increase. In this study, DAMA Engineering carried out a methodological study for the purpose after a detailed sampling campaign in a plant which is situated in one the main chromite zones in Turkey; 1 The current status of the plant was investigated quantitatively with the bottlenecks, Plant overall efficiency in terms of recovery, Efficiencies of the particular equipment (mill, screen, gravity circuit), 2 A new circuit was proposed with the available equipment, 3 The new circuit that is product of modeling and experimental effort, was evaluated quantitatively as if it is a running plant, After 4-5 months continuous effort, the capacity of the plant was almost doubled (37 tph to 70 tph) and the plant overall recovery was increased from 48% to 63% by grinding adjustments and additional shaking tables theoretically. It was shown that the plant may move into profit with the minimum amount investment using readily available system. INTRODUCTION TO THE CURRENT PLANT The objective of the study is to increase the capacity and recovery of the chromite plant owned by Kurmel Group, Akmetal Inc. The complete study is given elsewhere (DAMA, 2016). The plant is situated in one of the main chromite zones in Turkey; Aladag. The current capacity of the plant is around 35 tph and the overall recovery declared by plant engineer is around 47 %. The chromite plant mainly has 3 units; crushing, grinding and gravitational circuits. The crushing circuit has 3 stages; a jaw crusher, a secondary cone crusher and a tertiary cone crusher operating in closed circuit with a vibrating screen with the aperture size of 15mm. In grinding circuit, a rod mill (2.44 6m x 3.6) and a ball mill (2.13 x 2.3m) are used for primary and secondary grinding, respectively. Derrick screens are used for the size separation. Additionally, for the size classification of the system, hydrosizers are used and each size fraction is sent to the shaking table sets. The middling product of the tables is subjected to re-grinding with a ball mill with the dimensions of 2.1 x 2.9 m. The capacity and the recovery are affected by several bottle necks; hydrosizers’ pure classification, primary/secondary mill power vs capacity problems, re-grinding product’s high slime content and so on. These combined factors made the plant to run in low recovery and capacity. Hence, DAMA was asked to make a study to investigate current status of the plant and propose a new solution to increase capacity and recovery of the plant. The conceptual flowsheet of the circuit is given in Figure 1 below."

Eight Mine Weather Stations (MWS) installed at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) to monitor the underground ventilation system me helping to simulate real-time ventilation scenarios. Seasonal weather extremes can result in variations of Natural Ventilation Pressure (NVP) which can significantly affect the ventilation system. The eight MWS(s) (which previously collected and stored temperature, barometric pressure and relative humidity data for subsequent NVP calculations) were upgraded to provide continuous real-time data to the site wide Central Monitoring System. This data can now be utilized by the ventilation engineer to create real-time ventilation simulations and trends which assist in the prediction and mitigation of NVP and psychrometric related events.

Mineral properties and mineral firms often trade at a market value that is significantly greater than the value indicated by discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques. A possible explanation is that DCF analysis does not consider the value derived from managerial flexibility. Presumably, then, at least some of the difference between DCF value and market value is due to managerial flexibility. This paper surveys the recent attempts to empirically quantify the value of managerial flexibility using option pricing theory. The results indicate that managerial flexibility, at least as measured by the option pricing methodology, falls well short of explaining the gap between DCF value and market value.

The literature defines rockbursts in slightly different ways based on their generation mechanisms, field phenomena, and degree of damage, but in a way that is almost consistent. Generally, a rockburst refers to seismic events that mainly happen in underground excavations, for purposes such as underground mining, road and railway tunnels, nuclear power, etc., and that are followed by the collapse and outburst of rocks. Long-term rockburst prediction can be abstracted as a classification problem mathematically, in which we can introduce deep learning to solve it. Further, using deep learning in rockburst prediction can overcome drawbacks such as subjectivity and inconsistency brought from previous traditional approaches. A rockburst data-set, was employed to evaluate the current method for predicting rockburst grade, and the good results of overall success rate were obtained. The results indicated that the proposed algorithms can speed up parameter optimization search, the proposed method is robust model and might hold a high potential to become a useful tool in rockburst prediction research.

The basic goal of this investigation was to determine the degree of drying of high moisture lignite through the use of high temperature and pressure steam autoclaves. Specific items studied were: a) the effect of lignite particle size, b) steam temperature and pressure required, and c) the time of ahydration. Although removal of sodium, ash, sulfur and other ash-forming minerals was not the goal of this study, basic analysis of effluent water showed organic material and alkalai metal content. Removal of inherent moisture from run-of-mine lignite was tested by lock-feeding the lignite, which was previously sized by screening into 25 kg autoclaves. High pressure, up to 4.053 MPa (588 psi), saturated steam was then introduced into the pressure reactor. Reaction time, pressure, temperature, and depressurization rates were strictly controlled for each reactor test run. Results indicate that about 80% of lignite total moisture was removed, including some of the inherent moisture, yielding a non-oxidized, and thus stable, lignite product. As stated, a side benefit occurred as some reduction of non-combustible portions of the lignite also took place. The conclusion reached as a result of the tests is that the steam-drying process can be successfully applied to reducing moisture in lignite, and may be considered for additional studies on acceleration of the coalification process. On the basis of the data presented, the author believes that lignite can be economically upgraded in steam autoclaves by simultaneously reducing the moisture content by 80 percent and the sulfur content by at least 50 percent. Upgrading the lignite by this method will result in large energy and financial savings.

Chemical mining is the in situ extraction of metals from ores located within the confines of a mine (broken or fractured ore, stope fill, caved material, ores in permeable zones) or in dumps, prepared ore heaps, slag heaps, and tailing ponds on the surface. These materials represent an enormous, untapped, potential source of all types of metals. The field of chemical mining, now in its infancy, encompasses the preparation of ore for subsequent in-place leaching, the flow of solutions and ionic species through rock masses and within rock pores, the leaching of minerals with inexpensive and regenerable lixiviants under prevailing conditions of the in-place environment, the generation and regeneration of such solutions, and the recovery of metals or metal compounds from the metal-bearing liquors. It is not inconceivable that eventually our ore reserves will consist largely of low-grade, refractory, and inaccessible new deposits and low-grade zones near previously worked deposits, caved and gob-filled stopes, waste dumps, tailing ponds, and slag-heaps. Chemical mining promises economic recovery from these types of deposits. Before it can come of age, however, a much better understanding is needed concerning its chemical and physical aspects.

Many underground metal/nonmetal mines are using enclosed cabs on mining equipment to reduce the exposure of miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, some enclosed cab systems may not be meeting their expected efficiency in capturing DPM, which could be a result of inappropriate filter use, cab leaks or insufficient pressurization. NIOSH investigated several types of filters for reducing DPM to determine which type had the best capture efficiency. The laboratory results indicated that a MERV 8 (minimum efficiency reporting value, as defined by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air- Conditioning Engineers) filter captured about 50% of the DPM, a MERV 16 filter collected 96-98% of the DPM and two HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) grade filters captured over 99% of the DPM. NIOSH also performed a field study to measure the efficiency of two cabs at a limestone mine. The cab filtration systems of a loader and haul truck were found to be over 90% effective in removing DPM, except under certain operating conditions when the efficiency was as low as 41%. A possible reason for the low efficiencies is an open window in the cab, but more studies need performed to obtain a better understanding of the cause and solution of the problem.

High-intensity wet magnetic separators have been successfully introduced into the mineral processing field over the past ten to fifteen years, due largely to rapid advancements in magnet design. Wet magnetic separation, until recent years, was applied solely to the concentration of minerals of high magnetic susceptibility, such as magnetite, at relatively coarse sizes. Now, however, high-intensity separators are capable of treating weakly paramagnetic minerals and have extended the range of treatable particle size down to about one micrometre(1,2). . One of the more recent-high-intensity separators developed is the Kolm¬Marston Marston type high-gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) (3,4) It consists basically of an iron-clad solenoid surrounding a matrix material - a fine, ferromagnetic steel wool or expanded metal lath. A schematic diagram of the device is shown in Figure 1. Large, highly localized, pertebations of the magnetic field are created by the ferromagnetic matrix. It is these field gradients that are instrumental in developing large magnetic forces which act on the mineral particles. Operation of the separator is simple. Slurried sample is fed through the matrix and, depending upon the mineral parameters of particle size and magnetic susceptibility and. the operating parameters of flow rate, field strength and feed weight, some particles will be attracted to and adhere to the magnetized matrix, while the others will flow through the matrix. The separation is completed by later removing the background magnetic field and flushing the captured mineral particles into a separate container. The process can also be applied on a continuous basis (S).

"Gold, silver and copper form various complexes with cyanide, of which only the singly charged dicyano form adsorbs appreciably on activated carbon. The adsorption of the dicyano complexes appears to be controlled predominantly by chemical reaction at the surface of a shrinking unreacted core. Metal uptake over time is non-linear, which eliminates control by boundary layer diffusion. The rate of adsorption is not enhanced by a reaction interruption, which suggests the absence of concentration gradients in the pores. Finally, the rate of adsorption increases with decreasing activated carbon size in a manner consistent with the shrinking core model. The results of this investigation accentuate the importance of efficient acid washing of carbon and removing carbon fines from the barren carbon stream. INTRODUCTION With the dwindling reserves of high-grade ores, most of the world’s gold is produced from low-grade ores by cyanide leaching. In the past, leaching was followed by the Merrill-Crowe process, in which gold is precipitated from clarified pregnant solutions by zinc cementation. This process is still being used for high-silver ores, where the cost of carbon stripping becomes prohibitive. For deposits with silver-to-gold ratios of about 4 or less, adsorption on activated carbon would be the usual solution purification step taken. The process simplifies solid-liquid separation and offers a viable solution to preg-robbing organic carbon in some ores. The modern industrial application of carbon adsorption started with the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process, where carbon adsorption was used mainly as a solution purification step. In 1973, Homestake Mining Company commissioned the first large-scale CIP plant in the U.S.A.1 Later, carbon was added earlier in the circuit to control preg-robbing by adsorbing gold cyanide onto activated carbon as soon as it is dissolved. The scheme is successful because activated carbon is a stronger adsorber than the organic carbon found in preg-robbing ores. This process came to be known as the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Numerous research investigations have been performed on the chemistry involved in the CIP process, which at the time of its introduction was not clearly understood. Of these, research on the kinetics of adsorption probably bears the most immediate impact on industrial practice,2,3 where adsorption systems rarely reach equilibrium, if at all, and slight slowdowns in the adsorption rate can translate into significant decreases in revenue. To illustrate this, organic compounds, like flotation reagents, have been known to impair CIP circuits. However, laboratory tests showed that the organic compounds do not significantly affect the adsorption capacity of activated carbon. Rather, the harmful effect may be attributed to a lowered adsorption rate.4,5 Also well known is the faster rate at which fine activated carbon powders reach equilibrium compared to coarse activated carbon, even though the final (equilibrium) amount of material adsorbed per unit weight is the same."

Regional characteristics in the coal resource base have resulted in application of different mining methods across Canada. Longwall methods predominate in eastern Canada, whereas open pit, hydraulic and room-and-pillar methods are utilized in the west. Both provincial and federal agencies have regulatory responsibilities and both also share in the development of R&D programs. This paper outlines the scale and scope of the various agencies involved with health and safety R&D in our expanding coal mining industry. Specific R&D activities in ventilation, dust control, explosion hazards, tunnel boring, strata control and truck braking, which form part of the national program, are outlined.

Several years ago I wrote a comprehensive paper 'entitled, "Future Trend of Bulk Carriers" dealing with the principle dimensions of vessels and how they can be predicted; then with loading and unloading of large carriers, especially considering various designs of "Self Unloaders". Since writing the paper, many large bulk carriers were basically built along the, predictions made. Maximum size today is in the 150,000 DWT class, with few exceptions, which are combination carriers (ore-oil) or OBO's (oil-bulk-ore) in the 200-250,000 DWT class in the same paper, many references were made cautioning engineers not to design ports which could be "obsolete tomorrow", however, these were not always followed. Nevertheless, during the past few years many modern ports were built signaling the beginning of a new area of "Super Ports". Super Ports can be built for various reasons, most important to provide transfer stations where bulk material is received from large carriers then transferred to smaller vessels or barges for distribution. Obviously, opposite movement of bulk commodities can justify the building of "Super Ports", however, these are not as difficult to build for many reasons. The Material Handling Industry has developed efficient means of unloading smaller vessels or barges with continuous-type unloaders and has mastered the art of storing, reclaiming, and moving large quantities of bulk material to high-capacity shiploaders. Nevertheless, the industry has failed to design and market efficient ship unloaders which in any way could match the presently attainable shiploading rates. For these reasons, it is considerably more difficult to build "Super Ports" for incoming rather than outgoing bulk materials with large bulk carriers. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on problems affecting high-capacity, continuous ship unloaders, especially involving large bulk carriers. For better understanding, some references will be made to the smaller, continuous barge or ship unloaders, but only as the principles affect the larger units. Iron solubility's in spent pickling (HFHNO3 -H2O) solutions were determined as a function of HF and HNO3 acid concentrations. A chemical analysis of the industrial pickling solutions and sludges was performed. The stable phases observed in the sludges are FeF3.3H2O and (FeCr)F3.3H20. Pure Fe metal, AISI 316 stainless steel and AISI 416 stainless steel were used in this study. The results show, that the solubility of Fe increased as the concentrations of HF increased in the pickling solution at a fixed concentration of HNO3. A reasonable agreement between the experimental solubility data and the theoretical calculated data was obtained. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the solid solubility product formed in the ternary solution containing pure Fe is mainly, at a high pH value, FeO(OH) compounds and, at a low pH value, Fe F3.3H2O compounds.

Monterey Coal Company has begun a geologic monitoring program in order to better understand our in-mine geologic conditions and to apply the knowledge gained to our mining operations. Two methods are used to collect information. The first is a monthly examination of conditions throughout the mine using a rapid mapping technique. The second is the detailed mapping of specific events encountered during mining such as faults and roof falls. The data gathered from both methods is correlated with operational statistics to create a geologic/production database. From the database, a monthly evaluation of mining conditions is made. Also, the database has proved useful in such areas as forecasting roof conditions and examining how faulting has affected mining operations.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the influence of asphalt, bentonite and corn starch binders on the pelletization kinetics of coal fines and on the quality of the resulting pellets. Pellet quality was evaluated in terns of the compression strength, impact resistance (drop test), abrasion resistance and resistance to severe weather conditions. The amount of binder addition did not significantly influence the pellet growth kinetics. However, the pellet quality varied markedly depending upon the type and the amount of binder used. Experimental results are explained on the basis of the mechanism of interaction between the coal particles and the binders. Of the three binders tested, corn starch proved to be the best in all respects but for the resistance to water penetration. Finally, a combination of corn starch (imparting strength) and asphalt emulsion (imparting resistance to water penetration) was found to yield the best quality coal pellets.

Hanna Mining Company's Groveland Mine is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The low grade iron ore deposit consists of a mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, jasper, quartz and various iron silicates (1). The ore is beneficiated by magnetic separation and anionic flotation of the iron minerals with chemical depression of the silica. The magnetic concentrate makes up about 75% of the concentrate. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 2.0 million LTPY of pellet production. The concentrator facilities were started up in 1959 and the concentrate was marketed as sinter feed until 1963 when the concentrator was expanded and the pelletizing plant was added. The pellet plant now consists of regrinding, elutriation, filtering, balling and induration. The pellet machine is a straight grate which employs updraft drying and cooling and downdraft drying, preheat and firing. It is necessary to regrind the concentrate before pelletizing. The con-centrate is 60% passing 325 mesh, with a surface area of ±lOOO cm2/Gm, and must be ground to about 83% passing 325 mesh, 1600 cm2/Gm blaine surface area, for pelletizing. The energy for regrind has been reduced from 12.5 KW per LT to 8.80 KW ate of 2.0 million per LT. This was the result of changes made in the concentrator where originally a coarse spiral concentrate, instead of the magnetic concentrate which is screened on fine screens to reduce the coarse fraction and prevent overgrinding before flotation, was produced. Also in 1968 an additional concentrating line was added to the concentrator which employs more grinding power than the other three lines. The demand for a high iron grade and lower silica pellet resulted in the investigation of different schemes of upgrading the reground concentrate which had more iron values liberated during grinding for surface area. The reagentized material presented many problems, mainly in selectivity trying to flot the iron and with high reagent consumption having to dereagentize the concentrate for amine silica flotation, in the various flotation systems tried. The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of the various approaches that can be utilized in the study of mine subsidence phenomena. Attention is focused upon the rational selection and use of laboratory models. Broadly interpreted, mine subsidence is the deformation of the rock mass enclosing the mine. Depending upon a number of factors, the movement of the subsiding rock mass may be such as to disrupt gas and water lines or other buried utilities, to damage surface structures such as buildings and bridges, to dislocate streams, roads, and rail lines, to aggravate acid mine drainage and fire problems, and to generally mar the landscape. It is clearly a problem that no mine manager can safely ignore. It is also a problem that will grow with the general population increase. In the following, a summary review of past and present approaches to subsidence studies is given. The possibilities of duplicating subsidence phenomena in laboratory models are examined, and an analysis of a particular type of model is presented. Some preliminary results obtained from a model of the particular type analyzed are then discussed.

The Wyoming Province is an Archean craton which underlies portions of Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and much of Wyoming. The cratonic block consists of Archean age granite-gneiss with interspersed greenstone belts and related supracrustal terranes exposed in the cores of several Laramide uplifts. Resources found in the Province and in the adjacent accreted Proterozoic terrane include banded iron formation, Au, Pt, Pd, W, Sn, Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, and diamonds. The Province shows many similarities to the mineral-rich cratons of the Canadian shield, the Rhodesian and Transvaal cratons of southern Africa, and the Pilbara and Yilgarn blocks of Western Australia, where much of the world's precious and strategic metal and gemstone resources are located.
