"Respirable dust in underground coal mines has long been associated with lung diseases, and regular dust sampling is required for assessing occupational exposures. At present, respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined, but considering recent and yet unexplained increases in the incidence of lung disease amongst miners in specific geographic regions, more information about specific dust characteristics is urgently needed. While particle-level dust analysis is ideal, it is impractical for large numbers of dust samples because it is both time and cost intensive. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), however, is an alternative option, which offers the ability to determine the total coal to mineral mass ratio in a dust sample – analogous to proximate analysis of bulk coal samples for determining ash content. Here, preliminary development of a TGA method for this purpose is presented. The method is being developed to evaluate dust collected on mixed cellulose ester (MCE) filters using approved permissible sampling equipment. INTRODUCTION Based on the particle size, airborne mine dust can be classified in three categories: inhalable dust (< 100 µm in size), thoracic dust (< 25 µm in size), and respirable dust (< 5 µm in size) (Ramani et al., 2003). The World Health Organization (WHO, 1999) defines inhalable dust particles as those which can be breathed into the nose and mouth, and thoracic dust particles as those which can penetrate airways of the head and enter the airways of the lung. On the other hand, respirable dust particles can penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles into the gas-exchange regions (alveoli) of the lungs (WHO, 1999). Hlavay (1992) reported that the seriousness of the damage in the lungs and respiratory tract is based on amount of dust remaining in these organs, and the amount of dust depends on the extent of dust exposure, the size distribution of the dust particles, and the capability of the body for dust elimination. Inhalation of respirable coal dust by miners can cause a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease which is called coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). Silicosis is another fatal lung disease caused by inhalation of respirable silica dust. In CWP and silicosis, dust particles deposit in the lungs, damage the lung tissue, and ultimately cause scarring which cannot be reversed (Colinet, 2010). While overall incidence occupation-related lung disease amongst coal miners in the US has been declining for over 40 years, it appears that there has been a recent increase in specific locations in Central Appalachia (CDC, 2006; Pollock et al. 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011). Although this trend is yet unexplained, one theory is that particular dust characteristics in these locations may be a factor (Hassan and Lau; Page & Oraniscak 2002). For example, several studies have indicated that different coals may generate different amounts of respirable dust (e.g., see Page, 1993 and Litton and Page, 1994), and the surrounding geology may also play a role in terms of the types of dust particles generated. Although respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined as part of regulatory compliance sampling, more information about specific dust characteristics (e.g., size, shape and composition) is urgently needed."

As the program says -we&apos;ll he talking about the expectations of the Management of an Industrial Mineral enterprise relative to the activities of geologists engaged in that enterprise. Industrial Minerals is such a large industry both in tons produced and in value of product -and of such diversity and complexity of participating enterprises, minerals and products that I doubt if anyone person can speak for the entire industry as to the expectations of management with respect to the geologist. I&apos;m sure there are major differences in emphasis between segments of management as to the relative importance of the different aspects of the geologists&apos; role in the scheme of things. However, we will try to generalize concerning what we consider to be important factors and to be more specific perhaps of some of the factors with which we have had direct assessable experience.

During the past five years, Rexnord has developed, tested and introduced the Nordberg Omnicone Crusher to the industry. When the Symons brothers invented the cone crusher over 60 years ago, they employed the principle wherein the length of the crushing stroke was related to the free fall of material by gravity. This permitted the material being crushed to fall vertically in the crushing chamber; and in effect, caused the particles to be crushed in a series of steps or stages as the particles got smaller due to the crushing action. This also helps to reduce the rate of wear of the liners since the sliding motion of the particles is minimized.

DTX is a 1.3-mile-long rail extension being constructed by Transbay Joint Powers Authority to extend Caltrain rail service and future California High Speed Rail service to downtown San Francisco. It includes a 3,352-foot-long mined tunnel with a cross section varying from 50 to 60 feet wide and 43 feet high to accommodate two- and three-rail tracks. DTX will be excavated in mixed-face and Franciscan Formation with ground cover ranging from 40 to 85 feet. This paper discusses how mined tunnel design has evolved since the initial preliminary design phase over 10 years ago. The current design concept for tunnel construction is also discussed.

Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Small Mines Development in Precious Metals will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 1987 at Bally&apos;s Hotel, Reno, NV. Topics at this meeting will include Problems Facing Small Miners; Understanding Geology and Ore Reserves; Mining-Production Options to Maintain Competitiveness; Processing for Precious Metals; Financing and Economics that Work for Small Miners; and Understanding the Environmental and Permit Maze. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.&apos; Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents&apos; budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. He will explain which recovery process proved to be the most economic. Other papers in the introductory session include How to Best Use Consulting Firms to Accelerate the Development Process, by H. In beneficiation of phosphate ores it is common to use screening to produce the coarse "pebble" concentrate, and flotation to process the -1+0.1 mm size fraction. The -0.1 mm desliming product is treated as tailings. A new partially hydrophobic flocculant, P(MAAA) latex was developed to enhance flotation recovery of fine apatite particles through selective flocculation.

Bio-epigenetic sulphur deposits occur in Pecos, Reeves and Culberson Counties of far West Texas. Sulfate reducrng bacteria, utilizing hydrocarbons as energy, transformed gypsum into replacement limestone and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, retained in the porosities of the replacement limestone, was subsequently oxidized by highly oxygenated groundwaters, and native sulphur precipitated. West Texas sulphur was first recognized at surface exposures by William P. Blake, a geologist attached to the Captain Pope Military/ Scientific Expedition of 1854. Attempts were made in the early 1900&apos;s to mine these sulphur vent exposures by a retort method, but the ventures met with little success. In 1967, Duval discovered a large sulphur deposit near some of the old sulphur works in Culberson County. Duval also extended a small sulphur deposit in Pecos County. The Frasch process, developed for producing sulphur from Gulf Coast salt domes, proved successful in West Texas type sulphur deposits also. However, modifications of the process were necessary to provide economical and efficient sulphur recovery from the varied ore modes. West Texas conditions and logistics require the ultimate in productivity to be competitive in the domestic and foreign sulphur markets. Several companies, in addition to Duval, are producing or have produced sulphur in West Texas. As of the first of June 1984, a total of 29.4 million long tons of sulphur had been produced west of the Pecos -aver. Duval produced more than 88 percent of that total.

Natural ores, sinters, and pellets were subjected to a carbon monoxide reduction-disintegration test under laboratory conditions including a simulated blast furnace gas and a 1000°F temperature. The most significant findings were that: 1. Self-fluxed pellets broke down to a greater extent than either the acid pellets or the acid or self -fluxed sinter. 2. When pre-reduced, both the acid and self-fluxed pellets had very good resistance to breakdown.

As a factory-like method, sublevel caving consists of development activities, stockpiling and production activities that are carried out on different levels independently. Therefore, considering the operation from the development phase to the plant will lead to more reliable production scheduling. This paper presents a mixed integer linear programming framework for the long-term production scheduling of sublevel caving that maximizes the net present value while satisfying development activities, mining, and processing capacities, continuous mining, the allowable number of active mining units, grade blending, and vertical and horizontal sequencing. The model is coded in Jupyter Notebook and is solved using the CPLEX solver.

I have been asked to discuss the "Development of the Twin Buttes Mine for Production." This property, which is a large low-grade open pit copper mine about 25 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, was recently brought into production by The Anaconda Company under a long-term lease agreement with the Banner Mining Company. Since the scope of this paper is limited to the subject broadly indicated by its title I will confine discussion of historical, environmental and other general matters to a brief summary sufficient, I hope, to establish a background of those conditions which influenced our approach to the technical and economic problems that faced us at Twin Buttes. The paper deals primarily with our studies and activities related to the solution of these problems and with the resulting engineering and business decisions that were taken - decisions which culminated last September in the initial commercial operation of another major open pit copper producer unique and interesting in several respects.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. Apparatus The solvent extraction tests were carried in a 2000 ml plastic cylindrical reactor equipped with four 0.5” baffles. In the hypothesis test, the reactor was a 4000 ml cylindrical reactor with four 1” thick baffles arranged evening in the reactor. This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of pillar failure in a southern West Virginia coal mine. The conclusions are based on in-mine observations and analysis of mining methods, eyewitness account of the sequence of events, topographic and geologic conditions, and mechanical properties of mine roof, coal, and floor. The study indicated that massive pillar failure was caused by the collapse of the mine roof. The collapse of the mine roof was due to the combined effects of high lateral compressive stress and high extraction ratio causing excessive bending of the roof beyond its limit. It was assumed that the higher lateral compressive stress under such a shallow cover was probably due to the drastic change in the structural geology of the area and possible residual stresses. Eased on the analytical study it was concluded that the sudden release of elastic energy (shock) due to the rupture of the roof caused the squeezing of approximately eighty mine pillars.

Agrico Chemical Company, as we presently know it, is the result of the coming together of several different fertilizer operations. The Williams Companies, our parent organization, first entered the fertilizer business in 1971, when it acquired the fertilizer operations of the Gulf Oil Company. This gave us, among other things, the manufacturing facility at Donaldsonville, Louisiana. In 1972, The Williams Companies acquired Agrico Chemical Company from Continental Oil Company, bringing in a manufacturing facility and phosphate mines at Pierce Florida. Our Florida Mines are in the region commonly known as the Bone Valley Region of Florida. The majority of the phosphate fertilizer produced in the United States utilizes rock mined in this region. The Donaldsonville Plant was originally built in 1967-68 on the site of the old Faustina Plantation at an approximate cost of $80,000,000. (This plant is commonly referred to as our Faustina Plant.) Until such time as Agrico was acquired from Continental Oil, the Donaldsonville Facility was solely used to upgrade phosphoric acid into finished granular products.

Dewatering aids are chemicals which enhance the efficiency of mechanical dewatering equipment such as vacuum disc filters and centrifugal dryers. A new dewatering aid has been developed which significantly lowers the moisture content of the mineral concentrate and causes none of the undesirable side effects normally associated with dewatering aids. Highlights of product development from laboratory screening through field testing will be discussed.

"Constructed between 1939 and 1945, the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct is 45 miles (72 km) long. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) first identified suspected areas of leakage from the RWBT in the 1990s. A $1 billion project is underway to mitigate the leakage through the construction of a bypass tunnel around the area of most severe deterioration, a 2.5-mile (4 km) section located beneath the Hudson River. Two shafts, 800 and 900 feet (244 and 274 m) below the ground surface, are being sunk to support the tunnel construction. The deep shafts will be subjected to high groundwater pressures and have been designed to accommodate multiple tunnel portals. This paper discusses the engineering decisions and analyses leading up to the final design. INTRODUCTION Project Background The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) provides over 1 billion gallons (3.7 billion liters) of water to over 9 million residents of the City of New York and surrounding communities each day. This water is stored in upstate reservoirs and conveyed to the City via a system of aqueducts and tunnels. Water is delivered to the City almost completely by gravity and consists of three systems: the Croton, the Catskill, and the Delaware. The Delaware System is the largest of the three and supplies between 50% and 70% of the City’s daily water supply. In the 1990s, the NYCDEP discovered leaks in the central 45-mile-long (72 km) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct known as the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT). The leaks release between 15 and 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million liters per day) and are concentrated in two areas near Wawarsing and Roseton, New York. As part of the Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel and Wawarsing Repairs Project (Bypass Tunnel Project), the leaks in the Wawarsing area will be repaired by grouting from inside the existing RWBT, and the leaks in the Roseton area will be mitigated by constructing a bypass tunnel parallel to and 1,750 feet (533 m) north of the leaking portion of the existing RWBT. Two deep shafts will be excavated on either side of the Hudson River: Shaft 5B in Newburgh and Shaft 6B in the Town of Wappinger."

"This paper presents a quarry optimization plan using a block model and an in-house development quarry scheduling and optimization software (QSO Expert) to help improve quarry operations at Crystal River. The Crystal River Quarry is an underwater quarrying operation that barges limestone via the Gulf of Mexico, as the main source of raw material to a cement plant in Theodore, Alabama. To improve the quarry operation, an evaluation was completed to optimize the quarry planning and extraction procedures of the quarry. In order to achieve this, additional exploration drilling campaign was implemented, a new block model was re-calculated and the latest version of QSO Expert software was used. The primary economic impact is a higher recovery of limestone reserves; sustainability of resources, corresponding longer quarry life. Secondarily as the limestone is mined underwater and stockpiled above water, drainage reduces moisture content achieving direct cost reduction on limestone shipping. In addition, a considerable reduction in operational cost was achieved due to a significant decrease in consumption of electrical energy, reduced dragline maintenance costs and reduced dragline movements within the operation. INTRODUCTION Holcim is a Swiss-based global building materials and aggregates company. Founded in 1912, the company expanded into France and then throughout Europe and Middle East during the 1920s. In 1922, Holderbank, as the company was then known, expanded beyond the Swiss borders into France. By the end of the decade Holderbank held stakes in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Egypt (Holcim History 1912-2012) Positions in Lebanon and South Africa soon followed.. Holder bank later expanded in North America in the 1950’s. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Holderbank continued its expansion in Latin America, Asia and Spain for the first time. The company expanded into Eastern Europe and experienced a boom in Spanish construction preceding the 1992 Summer Olympics. By 1986, Holderbank was the world's largest cement manufacturer. In the 1990s, the company consolidated its European holdings as the American market drove growth. Expansion into Eastern Europe and Russia continued (Holcim History 1912-2012). In 2001, the company changed its name from ""Holderbank Financière Glaris"" to Holcim (short for Holderbank ciment) (Holcim History 1912-2012). Holcim expanded by purchasing Aggregate Industries entering into the United Kingdom for the first time. That year, the company also expanded into India by acquiring a stakes in The Associated Cement Companies (ACC) and Ambuja Cement Eastern. In 2008, Holcim became the largest shareholder of China's Huaxin Cement with a 40% stake. In 2009, they acquired Cemex Australia. In 2014, Holcim and Lafarge announced they had agreed to terms on a ""merger of equals"" valued at nearly $50 billion in 2015. The new company LafargeHolcim based in Switzerland has a manufacturing capacity of 427 metric million tons a year."

Poland lies at the junction of three geologic provinces: the East European Precambrian platform, the Middle European Paleozoic platform, and the Alpine orogenic belt comprising the Carpathian Mountains. However most of the rocks that contain mineral deposits and many of the recently explored and mined deposits are commonly hidden under thick overburden, sometimes up to over 500 m thick. The discovery of these mineral deposits was due to the combination of geologists talents for inference and the keen interpretation of geophysical data ultimately tested by drilling. Examples of such use of the state-of-the-art geology include the following: 1. Sedimentologic and paleogeographic reconstructions led to the discovery of 8.8 Gt of bituminous coal under 500 m of Jurassic and Cretaceous cover in the Lublin basin, 2. Tectonic and paleogeografic data suggested a potential for discovery of burried Upper Permian copper de-posits on the Foresudetic monocline; subsequent exploration discovered 75 Mt of copper and 0,17 Mt of silver, 3. Geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic da-ta combined with sedimentologic data and regional subsur-face geology resulted in the location of 1.3 Gt of Fe-Ti-V ore in the Precambrian basement of northeastern Poland under -500 m of cover 4. A combination of metallogenic theory and geological interpretation of regional geophysical mapping led to the discovery of Caledonian-Hercynian granites and grano-diorites with accompanying porphyry-type Mo-W-Cu ores below 300 m cover on the northeastern border of the Upper Silesian coal basin 5. Tectonic reconstructions based on gravity and seismic data combined with theory on the origin of native sulfur led to the discovery of 1.0 Gt of native sulfur under cover up to 300 m thick. Five deposits were found at the northern margin of the Carpathian Foredeep. The other deposits found include lignite, polyhalite, lead-zinc ores.

Canada and the United states are both developed countries with economies which are extremely dependant on oil. Canada exports 37% of its production (to the United states) and imports 35% of its consumption (mainly into Eastern Canada), making the country self-sufficient in oil. Canada is attempting to increase its oil production so as to simultaneously reduce its dependence on foreign oil while producing more oil for export. The United states -imports no less than 50% of its total consumption of 17 million barrels/day. Canada&apos;s exports to the United states form only 7% of the United States total imports. The United States would clearly prefer to achieve self-sufficiency in oil. Consequently both countries are dependent on foreign oil. The united States is however in the sensitive situation of depending, for its imports, on countries which are susceptible to destabilizing political events. It is the author&apos;s hypothesis that recent developments in underground oil recovery from the Athabasca oil Sands of Alberta may well, for both countries, form part of the solution to these problems.

While Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) occurs naturally, its management poses challenges especially at the decommissioned sites. Two passive systems were designed and implemented at two different decommissioned mining sites in Canada in order to treat the seepage with ARD characteristics. One seep originating from a reclaimed tailings pond was neutral mine drainage (NMD) containing circumneutral pH and dissolved metals (e.g., nickel, zinc) in elevated concentrations. The other ARD from a tailings stack showed net acid drainage characteristics with low pH and higher metal concentrations than regulated limits. Due to the different ARD characteristics occurring at each site, different types of treatment systems were designed and implemented. Both sites experience extreme winter conditions. The NMD has been treated mainly by limestone drain and aerobic systems since 1997. The acid ARD has been treated by a system consisting of an anaerobic sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) cell, an aerobic cell and a limestone filter since 2004. As this site has no access roads, space, or power, a significant capital cost as well as sludge disposal/storage requirements would have been required to institute a chemical (active) treatment system. Both systems have been successfully treating seepage and producing a water quality year round that could comply with regulated objectives.

"The Earth’s properties, composition and structure ahead of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be mapped for hazard assessment during excavation. We study the use of seismic-exploration techniques for this purpose. We focus on a seismic system for soft soils, where shear waves are better and easier to interpret than compressional waves, as has been shown over the last decade. The system is intended to be deployed on the machine’s cutter head, with a few seismic sources and sufficiently many seismic sensors to tackle spatial variability and noise characteristics. An important property of the newly developed system is its ability to process data with very little human interaction. Images need to be available in near real time, without human interactions slowing down the imaging process. This can be achieved by employing Full Waveform Inversion, which minimizes the difference between modeled and observed data. Because this method may suffer from local minima in the cost function if the data lack low-frequency information, we employ a dedicated seismic source that can generate sufficiently low frequencies for the relevant length scales. With data acquired in a number of field settings that mimic realistic TBM configurations, we show that the designed seismic system can successfully look ahead of the TBM and offers a valuable capability to support decision-making during tunnel excavation. INTRODUCTION While excavating a tunnel with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the geology and the ground conditions along the planned tunnel trajectory need to be investigated in order to safely and efficiently carry out the underground operations. This entails detecting the occurrence of boulders, foundations, pipes and faults, necessary to prevent hazards and time-consuming delays in the tunnel boring operations. In order to facilitate ground prediction ahead of a TBM, techniques as used in seismic exploration can be deployed. Two components common to seismic-exploration techniques are data acquisition and processing, the latter including inversion. We will discuss each of these for the application to tunnel excavation with TBM, in particular for soft soils."
