Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies' "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

In April. 1990 Addwest Minerals acquired the Phillips Ranch sulfur property. The sulfur deposit, hosted by the Permian Castile anhydrite, occurs as two distinct elongate. parallel orebodies within a series of northeast-trending grabens. After completing a positive feasibility study, based, in part. on successful drilling programs by Addwest Minerals and previous operators, the decision was made to place the property into production. Utilizing an existing on-site kasch plant, plus significant portions of the recently purchased Texasgulf Comanche Creek Frasch plant. Addwest is currently constructing an 800 long ton per day Frasch mining facility.

The examination of relatively well behaved distributions subject to truncation by a cutoff grade in the mine clearly demonstrates that a bias is inevitably introduced when the selection is based on the results of samples which are subject to even the most idealised error distribution. The idealised error used in this paper is assumed to be normally distributed with a mean of zero and is thus unbiased. The bias introduced can be minimised but it cannot be eradicated. A better understanding of the bias can lead to improved procedures for mine sampling, sample preparation, assaying and estimation of selection units which will not only reduce the discrepancy but more significantly will increase the efficiency of mining selection and hence profitability.

A new method for measuring the mill filling was developed by Outokumpu’s Pyhäsalmi concentrator during 1989-90. The method utilizes the power draw oscillation which is caused by the mill lifters. Each lifter bar causes a peak in the power draw and thus a continuous oscillation results. In a fixed time scale, the oscillation peaks will shift as the lifter bare hit the mill charge sooner or later depending on the volumetric filling of the mill. Thus the measuring method is based on the phase shift of the power oscillation. So far the measurement is utilized for maximizing throughput of the primary mills at Pyhäsalmi and Enonkoski concentrators and at Harjavalta slag concentrator. The paper describes the new method and the results achieved.

INTRODUCTION The most serious occupational radiation episode in U.S. history was the exposure of uranium miners to radon daughters in the 1945-1968 time period. Although the maximum permissible dose at that time was 12 WLM (working level months) per year, average exposures were several times that figure, and ten times higher exposures were not uncommon. Starting in the early 1960s, mounting epidemiological evidence appeared for an excess incidence of lung cancer among these miners; up to 1974, there was an excess of 134 cases (159 observed vs 25 expected) among the 4000 in the group under study (NAS-1980). When this excess became apparent, the Federal Government took jurisdiction, greatly tightened enforcement, and in 1969 lowered the maximum permissible exposure to 4 WLM per year. These standards were met largely by a great improvement in ventilation. As a result of these measures, average miner exposures were reduced 5-fold from 1965 to 1968 and by another factor of 3 by 1970. In 1978, the 4 WLM/year maximum permissible exposure was exceeded by only 37 of 7500 underground miners, for only 16 wars it exceeded by more than 25%, and for only 8 was it exceeded by 502 (AIF-1980). The average exposures to the various groups are listed in Table 1. We see that the average exposure for all miners was 1.03 WLM, and for those who worked essentially full time underground it was 1.45 WLM. For purpose of later discussion, it will be convenient to choose a single value for average exposures. In view of the fact that employment situations and job categories are bound to vary over a lifetime of work, we take this to be 1.3 WLM/year. The purpose of this paper is not to dwell on history, but rather to address the question of whether or not this present situation is satisfactory. This question was considered recently by a study group under the auspices of National Institue of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH-1980) and it answered the question in the negative, concluding that the maximum permissible exposure should be substantially reduced. However, their arguments were incomplete and were lacking in perspective. The principal thrust of this paper is to provide some of the material overlooked. RISK TO URANIUM MINERS FROM RADON EXPOSURE In order to quantify the risk to uranium miners under present working conditions, it is first necessary to estimate the risk of lung cancer per WLM of exposure. The most straightforward way of doing this is to use the data on the group of uranium miners under study. These are listed in Table 2 for 8 exposure ranges and for the total group (NAS-1980). If all data are given equal weight, the risk is seen to be 3.5 x 10-6 per year per WLM. Much can be said in favor of using this value for the risk as dose independent; it is within one standard deviation (SD) of the observations in 5 of the 8 dose categories (as expected from the definition of SD), and within 2 SD for all 8, and for the three cases differing from the mean by more than one SD, two are above and one is below. However, the uranium miner exposures in the present situation will be far below those covered in Table 2, so it is worth considering the possibility that the risk differs from this at low doses. From the last column of Table 2 we see that the experience from all exposures below 600 WLM indicates a risk higher than the mean for the entire group by more than two standard deviations (the value 600 WLM in this comparison was deliberately chosen to maximize this deviation; for exposures below 360 WLM and 840 WLM, the excess is only 1.0 and 1.6 standard deviations respectively). In view of this tendency for the risk to be higher at lower dose, we will take the risk to be 5.0 x 10-6 per year per WLM in what we will refer to as model A. BP neural network is a multilayer feedforward network trained by error back-propagation algorithm, which is one of the most widely used neural network models. However, BP neural network has exposed more and more shortcomings and deficiencies with the expansion of the application scope. In the prediction of ore quantity, BP neural network has the characteristics of slow convergence and easy to fall into local minimum point. In order to obtain the global optimal solution, and to improve the defects of BP neural network, this paper proposes combination optimization algorithm of genetic algorithm (GA) and BP neural network to improve the speed and accuracy of forecasting the main design flow chart and the analysis of the sort distinguish algorithm are offered, and then some problem in the design and debugging of the algorithm are discussed. On this basis, the GA-BP neural network model is constructed and applied to optimize the initial weights and threshold value of BP neural network. This model choices the floating point coding method to encode the connection weights and thresholds, and divides subjects into several populations. Through the introduction of selection, mutation, crossover, initial weight and other operators, making operational synergies between the various groups. This study selects 30 geological units, 8 quantitative variables (Pb, Zn, Cu, Mo, Si, Ni, Co, V) and 12 qualitative variables to carry out empirical analysis. Then the simulation of the algorithm is carried out in MATLAB and the parameters are analysed. By normalizing the input samples, 22 groups of observation data are used as the training data for prediction, and the latter 8 groups of observation data are used as the test data to be verified. The results show that when the ore quantity characteristics are not very significant, the model will produce prediction bias. But the improvement of the algorithm increases the efficiency of the function approach capacity of BP neural network and conquer the BP neural network system’s instability. It provides an auxiliary guide for ore prediction, which have higher reference value.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. The lack of an integrated approach makes the profitability of metallurgical plants lag behind that of other industries despite technical advances that have occurred in recent years. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart” operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. Combining real-time infrastructure with portal technology is becoming an accepted methodology. This paper introduces real-time portals and team sites to support decision making by work- groups which require both real-time and documentary information from manufacturing assets, vendors, head office and the Internet. Workers get insight from the overall process effectiveness index based on key variables such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. Real-time portals and smart clients are part of any real-time performance management (RtPM) solution. Three case studies in large metallurgical complexes are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterization of Malaysian monazite, a phosphate mineral, bearing rare earth elements separated from the tin tailings originated from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was performed in this paper. The study aims to collect detailed information on the chemical composition, crystal phases, and microstructure of the mineral monazite concentrate that would aid to optimize the subsequent hydrometallurgical processes for high-efficient separation of thorium and other associated rare earth elements. A systematic characterization study of the concentrate was conducted using techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques analyzed the morphological details on the surface, elemental analysis, and mineral association assessment and identified the surface functionalization groups. The bulk composition and the mineral phases in which the elements are present were studied by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies respectively. The XRF analysis confirmed the presence of Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Y (rare earth oxides: REO’s ~ 60 wt.%) while thorium dioxide (ThO2) accounted for 7 wt.% of the total composition. Traces of Ca, K, Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn were also confirmed by SEM elemental mapping. The XRD results confirmed that the concentrate was primarily composed of monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th (PO4)) along with minor impurity phases of quartz. Automated mineralogical analysis was used as a confirmatory tool to corroborate the preliminary evidences. Based on the particle size distribution analysis supported by SEM, the majority of monazite grains were found to be present in the size range of 170–210 μm. Strong bands of PO4 and SiO4 were observed in the IR spectra corresponding to the phospho-silicate matrix of the REE mineral.

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. Commissioning of a 150 tpd continuous vat leaching pilot plant at Ariel Resource's San Martin Mine began in October, 1995. Functioning of the systems proved to be as designed. Initial tri­als, however, were besieged with problems associated with clay fractions that were much higher than in the ore originally tested. Nevertheless, leach rates were good in the initial and subsequent trials. Difficulties with the viscous solutions generated by the clay fraction continued, requiring modifications to the solution collection methods and investigation of flocculant types and mixing points. Trials with deslimed ore and sand feed demon­strated continuous flow. Current modifications will be tried in late May, 1996, along with selected flocculants, with the objec­tive of leaching continuously without the need to deslime.

Numerous techniques for treating, controlling, and preventing acid rock drainage have been applied at the Summitville Mine Superfund Site. Challenging aspects of the remote mine site include the wide-spread occurrence of acid-generating soils and rocks, extensive surface and underground mine workings, and a cold and wet climate. Water treatment was an immediate necessity when the Government took control of the abandoned site in December of 1992. Subsequent reclamation activities have emphasized prevention and control of ARD to minimize future water treatment requirements. A combination of conventional, innovative, and experimental methods are being applied to successfully mitigate ARD at Summitville.

Large volume sand plugs are placed in tunnels to stem underground explosions at the Atomic Energy Commision's Nevada Test Site. Placement through long, narrow accessways is like stemming coyote holes and blast chambers in mining and construction. Experience with several other methods showed that pipeline conveying could be preferable. Small scale tests justified predicting a placement rate of 20 y. p. h. at 1000 feet, with a modified gunite placer. The initial production trial placed over 2000 c. y. and was estimated to effect a small cost saving after paying for new equipment. Initial problems included duct replacement and supply delays, dust, and other personnel hazards. Operations analysis and SOP'S reduced delays during the second field trial, minimized hazards, doubled production. Re cent re search and operations analyses produced data on abrasion resistant ducts, identified minor equipment modifications which can improve production, developed techniques for impact compaction to 90% ?maximum? and for extension of the practical range to 2000 feet. Twenty-two illustrations include an air consumption-distance chart.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke, and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale Fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL) in Fairchance, PA, using Ponderosa Pine, Red Oak, Douglas-fir, high and low volatile coals, PVC and SBR conveyor belt, No. 2 diesel fuel, and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector, and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations, and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (1). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters? Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

There may be someone here who is not required to run his equipment at its maximum capacity. There may be some fortunate enough to have more crushers than needed, wider conveyor belts than required, and other mill equipment equally oversize. If so, then this paper will have no interest for him; but if most of you are in the situation we in the aggregate producing industry are in, then you probably wish to crowd your mill equipment to its limit. When you do this you must watch for block-up and overloads of all sorts. You need more eyes than you have to guard the critical points. The human eyes that now do nothing much, but watch should be freed for more productive work.

The Separation Rapids property, located approximately 60 km (37 miles) north of Kenora, Ontario, Canada, is host to one of the largest rare metal pegmatite deposits in the world. This pegmatite was named the Big Whopper by its discoverer, Dr. Fred Breaks of the Ontario Geological Survey, because of the exceptional length and width of the surface exposure. The property is readily accessible from a main, all-weather road via a network of secondary logging roads. The main line of the Canadian National Railway passes through the village of Redditt, just 40 km (24 miles) south of the property. The Big Whopper is one of the complex-type (petalite sub-type) class of rare metal pegmatites that are geochemically the most highly evolved in the spectrum of granitic pegmatites. Such deposits are economically important as resources for the rare metals lithium, tantalum, cesium, and rubidium. While complex-type pegmatites are found in many areas of the world, most are too small to be profitably mined, however, with an inferred resource in excess of 15 million metric tons (mt) (17 million short tons [st]), the Big Whopper is only the fourth deposit of its type in the world with the size required to be of major economic importance. The other three deposits, which are currently in production, are the Tanco mine in Manitoba, the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe, and the Greenbushes mine in Western Australia. The Big Whopper is situated in the eastern continuation of the Archean Bird River greenstone belt which also hosts the Tanco pegmatite, approximately 60 km (37 miles) to the west. The principal commodities identified in the portions of the Big Whopper pegmatite explored to date are petalite (LiAlSi4010) and rubidium-rich K-feldspar. These are industrial minerals with important applications in the glass and ceramics industries. The Big Whopper also contains substantial quantities of lepidolite, a lithium, rubidium-mica which is the principal ore mineral for rubidium metal. Tantalum and cesium occur in anomalous levels with the petalite mineralization, and the possibility of finding zones of high enrichment in these valuable high-tech metals elsewhere in the deposit is excellent. Such enriched zones are typical of pegmatites as highly evolved as the Big Whopper. To date, the geological mapping and diamond drilling work completed by Avalon have delineated the Big Whopper pegmatite system over a strike length exceeding 1.5 km (0.9 miles), over widths ranging from 10 m to 80 m (30 feet to 260 feet) in thickness, and to a vertical depth of close to 300 m (1,000 feet), where it remains open. The pegmatite system consists of a vertically oriented massive petalite pegmatite dyke striking 280 degrees that is flanked by amphibolites containing a swarm of narrower albite and petalite dykes which have all undergone intense deformation in a high strain zone resulting in folding and intense shearing. The Big Whopper exhibits a mineralogical zonation pattern which is complicated by the superimposed deformation that has both folded and stretched the deposit. Drilling has defined a dilute geological resource totaling 7.1 million mt (7.8 million st) grading 1.283 percent Li20, 0.346 percent Rb20, and .007 percent Ta205 over a strike length of 600 m (2,000 feet), and to a vertical depth of 250 m (820 feet), where it remains open. The petalite and rubidium-rich-K-feldspars contained in the Big Whopper all appear to be of superior quality. The grades are consistent with a petalite content averaging 25-30 percent and a rubidium-rich-K feldspar content averaging 15-20 percent. The remainder of the rock consists mainly of albite, several types of mica, and quartz. Accessory minerals include columbitetantalite, cassiterite, apatite, garnet, and gahnite. Market studies show that the deposit is located close enough to existing transportation infrastructure to access rapidly growing, major markets in the glass and ceramics industries, both in the northeastern U.S. and Europe. There are only three competing lithium minerals producers in the world with the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe being the only major producer of petalite. The other lithium deposits produce spodumene, a less desirable lithium mineral. Lakefield Research Limited has successfully designed a process to produce an ultra-pure petalite concentrate containing up to 4.65 percent lithium oxide, and as little as 0.014 percent iron oxide, low levels of soda and potash, and negligible amounts of other trace elements. With these specifications, Avalon will have an excellent quality product for glass-ceramics applications such as Corningware®, CERAN® stove tops, and other thermal shock-resistant products. Lakefield is presently designing the balance of the flowsheet to produce separate concentrates of rubidium-rich K-feldspar, albite, mica, tantalum, tin, and high-purity quartz. Initial test work indicates that the feldspar products will be of exceptional quality. The K-feldspar concentrates contain 11-12 percent K20 and 1 percent Rb20, while the sodaspar contains over 10 percent Na20, and both have very low iron (0.01 percent Fe203). A preliminary economic model shows that with an initial production rate of 90,000 mt (100,000 st) per year, expanding to 170,000 mt (190,000 st) per year over 5 years, the project is capable of generating over CDN $10 million per year in pre-tax cash flow by year 5 on a capital cost of approximately CDN $30 million.

The industrial grinding process has undergone changes to better address the market and economic needs. Fine grinding of dry materials has developed to the point where classifying linings and fine ball charges improve mill efficiencies. Roller mills as well have wide acceptance due to their power efficiencies. The mill, by its nature, cannot provide the specific particle size or range of sizes which are required for further processing or final use. Therefore, various separators are operated in conjunction with the mill to control particle size. The sizing device helps minimize over grinding and control top size. Rising energy costs combined with increasingly tighter quality specifications have led to increasing study of the grinding and separation process.

The aim of this study was to investigate desulfurization and de-ashing of a mixture of subbituminous coal and gangue minerals by the agglomeration method. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a mixture containing subbituminous coal, pyrite, quartz and calcite. The effects of some parameters that markedly influence the effectiveness of selective oil agglomeration, such as solid concentration, pH, bridging liquid type and concentration, and depressant type and amount, were investigated. Agglomeration results showed that the usage of various depressants (Na2SiO3, FeCI3, corn starch, wheat starch) in the agglomeration medium has a positive effect on the reduction of ash and total sulfur content of agglomerates. It was found that an agglomerate product containing 3.03% total sulfur and 25.01% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 56.71% was obtained from a feed that contained 7% total sulfur and 43.58% ash when FeCI3 was used in the agglomeration medium.
